As long as its a physical copy. I do not own, condone, or use, or trust credit cards. I’ll probably not be able to get the expansion at Best Buy after my birthday then if it comes out in 5-6 months from now, and my birthday is June 21.

I don’t like to use my debit/credit card online, due to account risk. What I do when I need to is get one of the Visa pre-paid gift cards and use that. You may have to register it online with the company that issues it before you can use it, but after that it’s good for pretty much anything online. And if something goes wrong, all that you stand to lose is what’s invested on that card.

Lots of grocery stores and even drug stores seem to carry them now.

New weapons for heart of thorns expansion

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Palador.2170

Palador.2170

There will be no new weapon types. If there were going to be new types, they would’ve been announced explicitly at PAX. The melee polearm you saw the Revenant use is actually a melee-attack Staff.

how can you be sure that was a staff?
to me it didn’t look like a staff because there was a blade on the top.

Actually, I’d say it makes sense for them to do that.

Think about it like this: Lots of classes can not use a staff, and if they did it would be to hit things instead of casting magic. So, to give staves to those classes, they gave them fighting moves and introduced some weapon skins that look like … well… weapons.

By doing this, they ALSO give those classes the option to use some of the older staff skins if they want to, and give the spell casting classes the option to use the new weapon-ish looking skins on their spell casting staves.

Does this mean that none of the spell casting classes can use a staff as a melee weapon, though? Well, yes and no. Right now, they can’t. Whatever new weapon they get, this isn’t going to be it. But if they add more specializations later, it’s possible that they’ll introduce ones that change the staff use from spell casting to spell melee type moves of some kind. ((If you played City of Heores, imagine a staff fighting Elementalist using the attunement changes like the CoH staff fighting stance changes for an example.)) If that happens, you’ll have a weapon that can serve double duty.

A druid was a member of the educated, professional class among the Celtic peoples of Gaul, Britain, Ireland, and possibly elsewhere during the Iron Age. The druid class included law-speakers, poets and doctors, among other learned professions, although the best known among the druids were the religious leaders.

They don’t sound anything like a ranger so no I’m going to have disagree with the people who say that a Druid fits the theme of a Ranger.

Tell that to my old norn Ranger. I’d say he fits the theme of Druid pretty well, what with the norn story telling, spiritual ties to the great spirits, passing down of lore and all.

And let’s look at “Ranger”, shall we? It’s safe to say that the Rangers of GW2 are not the same as the real world Rangers, any more than the GW2 Druids will be the same as the real world Druids. GW2 uses the typical fantasy, DnD meanings of those terms.

There will be other new stuff to try out, and to get a good feel for that new stuff I’ll have to take a shot at it with a “known value” character first. Otherwise, I’ll be left wondering if it’s supposed to feel/play that way, or if it’s something about the new class causing any issues.

That’s not a bad answer, actually.

Write your stories and what not, then post them in Community Creations. Let everyone see what you can do, and see what they think of it. If you’re good, you may start to get attention, even from the devs.

When CoH added the ability for players to make their own missions, one player really threw themselves into it and pushed the system to its limits. You do not get placed randomly in a map. The megaserver map you get placed in is influenced by your home server, your guild, your friends list, and your party. For example, if your home server is Tarnished Coast, you are quite likely to be put in a DR map with RPers in it.

That doesn’t always help.

I’m in a big RP guild, and my home server is TC. I’ve lost track of the times I’ve zoned in and out of DR trying to find the instance with the RPers in it, until I just gave up in disgust.

Honestly, repping my private guild seems to give me about the same odds.

And when champion meets champion… Duel Battle! Each champion has their own custom deck, which you can expand upon with collectible cards! This fast paced CCG-based game will quickly decide the winner of each clash, while being more in-depth than just a few button presses could ever be!

Extra champions and booster packs will be on sale as soon as the game is released! Players that have 50 points in the Hall of Monuments of Guild Wars and/or a legendary weapon in Guild Wars 2 have a chance to unlock bonus champions and cards!

Elites are one of the worst gameplay problems still to persist.

They’re supposed to augment that terribly limited skill system, and instead you find your elite is a cheap inflatable toy that lasts 5 seconds.

There’s a joke to be made there, but it would likely get me banned…

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. What if they allowed the elite skill slot to be used for a utility OR healing skill instead? Not only would this open up a wide range of possibilities for people, but it would increase the amount of useful things you can do with the slot, making it more powerful in general. Thus, the racial elite skills could also be made more powerful without them becoming the “must have” for the slot.

Junk Items

Palador.2170

::laughs::

You want to know why they’re there? Two reasons.

First is for flavor. If everything just drops coins, that’s kind of dull. But instead they drop things like hooves, lockpicks, and needles. These say something about what you were fighting. Yes, you just sell them for coins, but they add some flavor to the world and the loot without increasing the value of it.

Second is because they take up space. You learn very quickly that if you want to keep all the money you’ve earned, you need more inventory space. So, you get bigger bags, or buy bag slots. This drives some of the crafting and gem sales. Or maybe you waypoint to a vendor, or summon a merchant to take it off your hands. Waypoint costs and gem costs for the summon consumable drive the economy too.

Would you play a Guild Wars 2 Tabletop RPG?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Palador.2170

If I remember systems correctly, I believe the Champions Online game pretty much was the test bed for the Champions system that got released shortly after the online game did. That could probably do a pretty decent job for it.

CO was actually based on the older Champions game that used the “Hero System” of gaming. It lost a lot when being converted to an MMO.

And that’s the big advantage of a tabletop game over an MMO. You can go into more detail about things, make rules that allow new things. Add twists and variations that just wouldn’t be worth the effort in an MMO.

Let’s ask this: Even if you’re not into gaming, how many of you would buy the books just to get background details on the things the game can’t or doesn’t cover? Would you buy the additional books that cover things like the asuran schools? Skritt? Largos? Hall of Monuments? I think some people would be tempted, at the very least.

Tengu are great, but what about...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Palador.2170

Palador.2170

Anyway, a new race is best saved for an expansion, as the Jungle dragon is next and the related race is already in game, we can skip that. As the Tengu are currently fighting Primordius minions, we would more likely see that race when an expansion for that dragon is released and as it is such an important one it will likely be the last. If they released an expansion focused on Bubbles, then the Largos/Quaggan would be a good playable race to include with it.

I would hope that they introduce any important races before the plot requires them, so we can get to know and care about them before they’re thrust into center stage. That’s why they need to introduce Tengu before Primordus becomes the next focus.

I’m not sure if they’ll do it now, but it should happen at some point.

Tengu class (possible)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Palador.2170

Palador.2170

And that’s still disregarding why the tengu would suddenly up and leave their Domain. Mordremoth? Pfft, they could care less about that than they did zhaitan.

That’s actually an easy one to address.

Maybe Primordus’s destroyers have been pressing into the DoW harder, lately, and they’ve realized that they can’t stand alone forever. Or maybe some of Mordermoth’s vines went under the wall and attacked? They kept the Fallen out with the walls, but there’s at least two dragons that have active minions in the area that can bypass that wall.

Aside from that, it can actually follow the same basic structure as the other races’ personal stories. First two arcs cover choices made during creation, third centers on stepping out into the larger world and aligning with an order. There are Tengu outside of the wall, and at least one was involved with the Pact already (Izu Steelshrike, one of the craftsman recruited by Trahearne in “Forging the Pact”). It’s not unreasonable to think that they can bring back word of events, and set in motion your leaving to enter the world at large.

Again, not saying that I expect HoT to have any new races, much less Tengu. I’m just saying that they could make the plot fit, if they wanted to.

Palador.2170

I know a lot of people hated her, and possibly didn’t like Season 1. I take that it had flaws, but in my opinion it was just on a more experimental basis, it was ANet’s first attempt at story-telling for a living world. Some (most?) episodes felt somewhat shallow or too linear, but now that we’ve been revealed Sylvari are from the Jungle Dragon, and after a small read on Short Story: What Scarlet Saw, I feel much worried about missing her lore for future content related to Mordremoth. From this short story:

Sadly, there’s already been in-game stuff that contradicts that short story. The devs have made it clear that if it’s not in the game, then it’s not official lore.

You can not count on anything that story told you being true from this point forwards.

Palador.2170

It’s a matter of timing, which is why I used the word “now” in there. He’s started this thing, and the correct timing for him to have stepped out of the Pact leadership was before starting to take it to Mordremoth.

. . . because right now there’s only one person who could step in and have it be believable to us as players – us. And we have WAY more important things to be doing.

True, but we don’t have Trahearne “now”, either. Someone’s going to have to take charge of what’s left of the Pact, and while we’re the obvious first pick, it can’t really be us. So, it will be someone else, and by the time Trahearne is found I’m sure that other person will be an obvious choice for Trahearne to turn his rank over to.

If you are suggesting making a story the size of the original personal story for the sake of a new race, I’m sorry but if that’s happening I think we might have bigger issues than the fact that the first ones wouldn’t even be solved. You cannot simply add tengu to the current story, it is not possible in this campaign. There is no way else than breaking 2 ½ years of built up story.

I’m curious as to why you say that. Care to explain why they couldn’t have a full personal story for a new race?

Tengu class (possible)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Palador.2170

Palador.2170

That was very naive, considering you did not solve any of the problems I described. To begin with: You did not solve how this new player to the game would get to know about everything from the original personal story (which is the foundation for the continuing living world), to name a few: (who is trahearne, the pale tree, zhaitan, why is there no tengu in destinys edge). New tengu players would find it odd that they are not even part of the living world so far, yet they emerge from their capital and takes command of the pact just like that.
And if the tengu were not introduced to the original personal story, what would they think of orr? A random wasteland being a wasteland for a random reason?
And what about that spine in the durmand priory, is that just for esthetical pleasure?
And every single character in the story so far, would be presented as someone familiar, yet unfamiliar to a new tengu player.

Mentioned above is a fraction of what you can see turned out to be quite a few obstacles to overcome before a new race can be added.

A Tengu personal story would logically cover all that. It would be easy to write the story with the assumption that your character doesn’t know all that, so the story covers them finding out all these bits of information as they go along and rise in the ranks of an order, then the Pact.

The Pact is in pretty bad shape right now. If a new soldier from any race showed up and started getting amazing results, they’d shoot up in rank quickly. They wouldn’t be THE (first) Commander, but they’d eventually make the rank of Commander by the end of their personal story.

in Living World

Palador.2170

Trahearne is not a character I particularly like, but I’d rather see him fade into the background of the story than be killed off. That just seems kind of unnecessary. He could just retire to Orr and focus on fulfilling the Pact goals there rather than personally leading the charge against every dragon.

He can’t do it now though or that’s just as much character as- . . . murder . . . as actually killing him off.

It depends on how it’s done. If he falls back and admits that it was a mistake to think his experience with the Orrian dragon makes him the best leader against all of them, then he can return to Orr and follow his Wild Hunt while still being called in to give advice when needed. And given recent events, I think a lot of sylvari might go with him, Orr’s about as removed from Mord as they can get right now, it might actually be the safest place they can go.

Having him fall back, but keeping him important to the storyline, would be a good way to go.

Thoughts?"

Well, they could make the personal story for a new race pick up from where the Living Story is right now, and have you follow a different path up to current events. Eventually that path will become outdated, but that’s already happened to the personal story for all current races, so that’s not really an issue.

If a new race decided to join the fight, I’m sure a member of it would be able to quickly earn the rank of Pact Commander (given current LS events). So, the rank there isn’t an issue. Getting to know the other characters in the LS, however, is. I’m sure they could be introduced in the race’s PS, or they might simply hand-wave a bit and run with it. Not the best solution, but hardly the biggest plot hole ANet has handed us.

And as for the confusion of those that start as a Tengu/whatever and are dumped into events without the build-up? It’s no worse than those that start playing now and go from the end of the Personal Story (if they even do that), and into the end of Season 2. (That would be one incredible jump in plot, very confusing.) With the game always moving forward, there’s going to be a need to catch up on what you’ve missed, new race or not, for new players.

Edit: Not saying that I expect Tengu in HoT, or any other race. Just saying that the plotline problems are not insurmountable.

Game does need to get ALOT harder actually, everything is too kitten easy.

I think it would be better to say that the game needs an OPTION to be much harder, so people can pick which way they want to go about it.

And it needs to be entirely optional, meaning it can’t be part of any other challenge so people feel forced into it. Let hard mode stand on its own, with a special title for doing it. (Beat all of Season 2 in Hard Mode, get a title like “Wicked Dagger” or “Bearer of Pain”.) That way, people after armor or other shiny things don’t get forced into doing it, and even more casual players can still play through and enjoy the story.

Yeah, the only way to address this would be to synchronize the maps, for example putting Vinewrath on a timer and make it global. Add it to the world boss rotation. That should stop people from jumping to the further along map.

All I can say in Trahearne’s defence – circumstances are a bit different, we have a fresh awakened dragon that is right at our doorstep this time.

Also in Trahearne’s defense, he probably didn’t expect Mordremoth to be capable of retaliating in such a dramatic fashion. All previous experience has shown that the giant vines were not capable of attacking airships cruising at combat altitude (they needed to come down low in order to be below the cloud cover and coordinate fire properly). Even so, the battle would probably not have been a complete disaster had the Sylvari complement of the Pact not gone insane like they had and attacked from within.

I’m going to agree with these two.

With Zhaitan, the “fly above and blast everything to cinders” approach would have worked. I’m sure Trahearne was ready for flying opponents, which is how Zhaitan would have had to deal with such an attack.

We need to remember that Trahearne isn’t really a military commander in mindset. He was put as leader against Zhaitan because he was the one that had studied the dragon and its forces the most, and all could agree that they trusted him. We can’t really be surprised that he assumed that the same tactics would work this time, he was out of his depth. He’s just so used to being out of his depth that he didn’t realize that this time was different.

It’s easy to blame Trahearne for this one, but in hindsight a lot of people missed the obvious and lead to this happening, not just him.

As for what happens to him now? I’m sure he’s alive, but I suspect that he’ll have to hand over Caladbog (sp?), then retreat. Mordremoth has influence over minds. I’m guessing he can control sylvari at longer range, but as we draw closer, ANYONE will be at risk. Caladbog will give us something to use for protection (even if we don’t swing it around) for us and those close to us, allowing a small group to get in and try to take Mord out, Destiny’s Edge style.

Why don't you like SPvP

You know this is almost like asking people who don’t play FPS (or another genre) why they don’t play them.

You’re going to get a million of different reasons, that essentially boil down to that it’s not their kind of cup of tea.

What they said.

For me, it’s several things.

  • Too fast paced.
  • Too toxic.
  • Too many cookie cutter characters.
  • Reduced build choices. (Admittedly, goes with the previous.)
  • I generally don’t enjoy attacking other players.

Now, do I do SPvP? Yes, a little. There’s rewards I want, and this is the best way for me to get them. But I stay in practice, and I don’t talk to anyone. I don’t take it seriously, and I hate it when people do.

502 Error

For the last couple of days, I’ve been unable to log into the forums. Every time I’d try, I’d get a “502 Error” (at least, I think that’s what it was).

I know I’m not the only one having this problem, but it’s rather hard to post it here on the forums when you can’t log in.

I don’t know how I wound up logged in suddenly, I guess it finally sorted something out, but it’s likely still a problem for some others.

Both of them warned that Lion’s Arch would be the focus of an attack, and up until then my theory seemed sound. However Evon fleeing Lion’s Arch and locking the gate behind him doesn’t fit so well.

It looked like he did that, but later the Captain in charge of the gates claims she shut them down. She may not have been talking about THAT gate, but how would Evon shut down an asura gate, anyway?

I like your theory, it’s more likely than any of mine, but still interesting.

I’m not sure that it’s the “zerk meta” that they’re trying to fix here.

I think the problem they’re addressing is Might itself, and how important it can be in the game.

Vorpp did nothing wrong

a lot of people harbored some hatred for Asura, or mostly towards Vorpp himself after Seeds of Truth for experimenting on Sylvari.

But now that we know the truth, his research is justified, we’re not experimenting on people afterall, just dragon minions, constructs, with pre-programmed personalities. It’s not much different from disassembling a golem when you think about it.

I wonder if his researched turned up anything useful on how to best stop the Sylvari menace?

You know… the asura escaped Primordous when he arose, right? They were in the way because they were attracted to magical things, and tended to gather magic for their own use. But they got away… somehow.

And now? Well, now they’re on the surface, attracted to magical things and gathering magical power. What if Primordous LET them get away? What if he’s using them like a beekeeper uses bees to gather honey? Is it possible that asura are unknowingly working as dragon minions?

Experiments may be in order to find out.
