And honestly? If DR goes mega. You’re going to see RPers take over WvW…for RP. And then the kittening will truly begin.

not going to quote the rest of your post, because i agree 100% with it, especially about how hard EU RPers got shafted.

This part, however, is something I’ve been dreaming about since day 1. I’ve always wanted to get more RP going on in WvW. I actually wanted to try to make our garrison on TCBL an RP hub. As very longtime RPer, as well as an extremely experienced WvW commander, I would love to see this happen. (in fact, I actually started off in WvW while being completely in character) There would be an initial adjustment period, but it would actually go pretty smoothly on TC. Our RPers are viewed as beloved by a lot of our WvW players, and a lot of our WvW players converted into RPers as well. Sure, there’s the occasional idiot who tries to troll RPers, but they tend to get squashed pretty quickly. The trolls didn’t stand a chance when we had our pirate crew around, because c’mon…. pirates. We’ve had pirate commanders, who gave commands while never breaking character and it was AWESOME. Nothing gets your blood pumping like knowing you had to keelhaul the 50 scurvy lubbers that were tryin’ ta plunder yer keep.

The main thing would be that the RP needs to happen in the towers and keeps, not in the citadel. We have guides for how to set up and defend each of our areas, and how to call in for backup. I’ve always said that RPers were TC’s secret weapon, and would be absolutely delighted if this were to occur.

Seeing as how they’re not even responding in the official Megaserver thread. My guess is that all we’re going to get is the “Go guild yourselves” response that came before the patch even came out. Maybe in 6 months, we’ll get really lucky and they’ll have a CDI about it, so they can ignore that too like they did with the WvW ones.

I think WvW needs more updates

Actually…. I agree with the OP. The borderland maps are set up horribly. There’s no strategic sense to the layout, just…. the keeps make a triangle, the towers make a square, and the camps make an oval. I haven’t been a toddler in decades, I don’t need them trying to teach me my shapes. The towers that should be protecting the keeps are actually behind them. The keeps are also right next to each other, so basically all the thirds are laid out backwards. Anyone who would set up defensive structures like that would find that their kingdom would be lost in less than 20 minutes, and they would forever be a joke.

The solution is actually pretty simple. If you look at EB, it’s pretty close to right. The towers support and help defend the keeps. Something similar to that would be the best way to go with the borderlands, and they wouldn’t even really have to make entirely new maps to do it. Just….. shift the current areas on the borderlands around a bit. Swap the location of the garrison and the north camp. Move the bay to where the SE camp is(yep, all the way on the other side of the map, since that’s where the water actually is) and put a tower where the bay was. Then do the same thing with the Hills and SW camp, and put a tower where the hills was. Now the towers are actually in the strategically intelligent positions to help defend the keeps, and the keeps aren’t practically bumping into each other.

The waypoints would still be pretty useful for defense but wouldn’t let zergs respond to any location on any of the borderlands within 30 seconds. People would have to spread out a bit, and possibly run multiple zergs.

The strategy would move beyond “facemash and waypoint rush”. Areas would have strategic importance. Open field fights would have strategic importance. Creativity, intelligence and planning would be mandatory. The maps would have new life breathed into them. Good players would be excited about it, and bad players would need to adapt and improve.

Question, is the roleplay issue officially here? Or do we double up our posts here:

Judging by the infractions I’ve gotten in this thread, I know the mods are reading this one, but it would probably be better to post in that thread as well.

I am fine with as many personal insults as you’d like to throw at the rest of the community that isn’t one of your precious RPers. If you all want to hold hands and pat each other on the back over how wronged you have been and how you are the true reason that MMORPGs exist, then go ahead. It isn’t true, but if that is what this thread is for, then I’ll leave you to your hand holding.

I have played plenty of MMORPGs and participated in RP events and I haven’t seen this level of ‘poor us’ in a long time. I support everyone who said that they are in favor of keeping COMMUNITIES together.. of all sorts.. but not those who feel that RPers are the special children deserving of extra attention and catering too.

Riiiight, let me reiterate once more:
1. You have here a thread of customers of a service provider telling that service provider how they want said service to be while pointing out that part of the service they initially paid for is no longer provided.
2. You come in and tell them they are whining.

One question and one example to you:
1. What are you actually trying to accomplish?
2. Imagine there was a cable provider. He restructures his network, suddenly some people are no longer getting the sports channel. They complain that they no longer get the sports channel though that is why they got the cable package in the first place.
You, in this thread, that is as if you went to those people and said: “Stop whining just because your sports’ community doesn’t get its channel anymore. Everyone else is getting their film and cartoon channels.”

Once again: What is your motivation to post in this thread?

i’m not saying i’m answering your question or anything, but i’mo just set this down right here and let people draw their own conclusions.

This pattern of people coming in, saying everyone’s wrong, insulting everyone, then trying to act like they’re the ones being mistreated when they get put in their place is getting tiresome. I miss the old shills, they at least made this tapdance interesting.

If anything you’re the one that is acting entitled to something that you really aren’t. If you can’t hold your community together without A-net modifying their game to fit your needs, then I don’t know what to tell you. Just because you can’t understand that everyone is adapting to things implemented with the advent of Megaservers and patch changes, doesn’t mean that they aren’t.

It’s a roleplaying game. It’s right there in the title. What you’re saying is akin to “hockey players shouldn’t be welcome in the NHL”. Whether you like it or not, this is the RPer’s genre. Where are many other genres for those who despise roleplayers, yet the MMORPG is the one where roleplayers are continuously treated as second best, by both developers and players who would be a far more natural fit in one of the other genres. if people came in and tried to treat the existing players in say, HALO this way, no one would put up with it. but because it’s roleplayers, it’s been accepted. Attitudes such as yours are part of the problem, and is the reason MMOs are a joke these days. They’re cheap cash grabs, that have betrayed their roots. Because those who built the genre keep getting pushed out in favor of idiots with their parents credit cards. If it wasn’t for roleplayers, you wouldn’t have ANY MMORPG to play. Show some respect to those of us who built a genre for people like you to destroy.

I honestly can’t come up with a reason as to why nobody from Anet has responded to this thread, after the patch went live.

But if I had to try and find some shred of a reason, I’d have to go with this: They hope, collectivly, that this thread dies soon. The faster the better.

That way, they don’t even have to come and answer us. They won’t have to explain themselves. They can just keep pretending that everything is amazing.

I’m baffled that Dev’s these days don’t seem to understand one really important factor: The short-term costumers won’t bring you kitten. They might bump your playerbase for a few weeks, hell, maybe even 2 months. But what’s after that? The most loyal playerbase any MMORPG can have will be so kittened off that they left the sinking ship a long time ago – just to be mistreated somewhere else, eventually.

But for that – and for the effects of it, it’s only you who is to blame, Anet. But what’s a loyal customer-base when you can have short, easy cash with buzzwords and less actual service. Got dat patchmoney, eh?

We will see how long this can keep going.

It’s actually common practice in community management to isolate and ignore complaints until posters get tired of themselves and give up. Every major fiasco in modern gaming has been handled this way (a certain city-builder, a sci-fi high fantasy game, and an ancient history battle simulator all come to mind). And since it works, I don’t see the practice changing.

If you don’t acknowledge a problem, it doesn’t exist.

yup. this has been standard practice for how they’ve behaved on the WvW forums as well. Bug reports, complaints, suggestions to improve the systems already in place, all get ignored. At best, they give some token lip service, or the sham CDI’s. All hype, zero action. Even for something as simple as the ability to have different colored commander tags….. nothing. They’ve been hand delivered solutions, and have ignored it all. When they do post something (once every few months), it usually shows a complete lack of knowledge on the subject. They say “soon”, and make excuse after excuse, and after a year and a half, the game is actually worse off than it originally began. The issues get beaten to death by the community, and they just act as though none of it, or even us, exist. Yet they go and tell other portions of the playerbase and potential new players how much they “value the community” and that portion of the players eat it up and defend them, because those players just haveen’t happend to have asked for anything yet. The instant they do ask, they get an eye opening dose of reality. It’s not something I see changing any time soon, and it’s not something ANY paying customers should EVER have to put up with.

Badges for Tomes of Knowledge?

remove normal xp from wvw, add tome and scroll of knowledge vendor for badge. problem solved

And how should we get the skill points needed to craft superior siege?

through the scrolls. they give a level, which adds a skill point.

I think that really is the optimal solution. In fact, I’d like to extend it to gold as well. 100 badges would equal 1 gold, as per the prices from the siege vendor. I don’t know how well it would go over, but I think it would be better than seeing people use WvW like an queensdale champ train.

Still not seeing anything specific about megaservers NOT allowing people from combatant servers to be placed inside the same instance.

Dev post doesn’t address this.

Patch notes don’t address this.

As per my original question: can people from a current wvw matchup be zoned into any of the megaserver enabled zones together?

Yes. A couple people from TC reported that they were in the same overflow as some BG players earlier today. Given the current circumstances with that match, the results weren’t pretty.

And for the record, solo RPers from various non-RP servers: Whether by guesting or through this new megaserver system, you are benefiting from the pre-existence of RP communities. These communities were built up because there were centralized areas for RPers to gather. While anyone can just randomly one-off RP, in order to have a real constant flow of overarching stories and multi-guild events, a strong thriving community is required. These communities were built on those RP servers. You all can RP alone without that stuff, you’ve made that point very clear. These communities however, can’t. They can’t exist if they’re unable to even keep themselves together. You all would benefit greatly from the continuation of these communities, as they would create many more opportunities for even solo RPers to participate in grander events. The implementation of these megaservers is a severe block to any attempt to create such events, which means it’s a detriment to our way of life, so to speak. It’s odd that you keep telling us to think of your needs when you seem to be dismissively waving off our own.

Well, you are dismissing the needs of the game, and my own as a RPer as well. It does feel horribly selfish that you are only thing about how it’s affecting your community. And worse I am being singled out above by others for “not choosing to be” part of the community, as if that was an RP crime. I didn’t even know about RP servers, and my Guild had already chosen a server at headstart. How am I evil (or not “tr00 RPer”) for not being part of your servers, and for wanting more populated city maps? Is it really selfish of me or the other way around? I even guest there not just to “farm” events but hoping to see RPers around. All the RPing I see was most of the time on Divinity Reach, and found too many overflows for RP to matter at all. It just seems as you don’t want “lowly outsiders” who “don’t roleplay” unless they guest there and acknowledge your all superior RP position in the community (sorry, it does feel arrogant for an outsider, even if you may not see it as such.)

Improve filtering. The megaservers are wonderful and perfect for the game, like it or not. The inconveniences to some players don’t overshadow the way it improves the gaming experience for many. Taking it away from cities without trying some more worthy alternative would be a crime.

Ascended also inconvenienced me, and in my view wasn’t needed. The players that claim there’s nothing to do will always complain anyway. I still love and play the game nonetheless, regardless that addition, understanding the reason it has a place in the game, even if I not fully agree with it.

I feel bad because it seems as if I am attacking you, but what I do hate is not TC/PS at ALL, nor the RP communities (that would be stupid, seeing as I am on your side), nor you personally, but the attitude that ANet “hates” you and your RP communities because they have chosen to improve the game for the betterment of all, YOU included.

(And “deleting” Anvil Rock by merging it is not a very humble suggestion at all. “Low population servers shouldn’t exist!” I fail to see the logic of that vs the megaserver, which at least lets old, smaller communities to continue to exist , while not really destroying your own-no, me existing along with you on your cities won’t destroy your RP experience.)

What you don’t seem to be getting is that you CAN’T join us. the RP community has been scattered. There was no metric to track roleplayers, so roleplayers have been placed randomly on several different servers. Even guilds have been scattered in this manner. If you have a 20 man guild, and 4 are on serve A, 7 are on server B, 2 on server C, 3 on server D, and 4 more are on server E, you can’t do anything together. That is the problem the RP community is facing, but in a much larger scale.

They even jumbled up the different language based servers as well. So now you have French, German, and English players on the map who can’t even understand what each other are saying. Any sense of community is gone. This is NOT a change to improve the game. This is a practice in idiotic deception by Anet, to try to trick people into thinking their game is bustling while their customer base continues to shrink. It’s like the champ trains. Anet considers those to be “social situations” yet…… almost no one ever says a word to each other. Yet, the actual social settings, such as in Divinity’s Reach on TC and Piken (where it was primarily roleplayers roleplaying freely) they absolutely destroyed. The cities aren’t “more alive”, they’re just filled with more silent blobs of flesh. The cities that actually used to be alive are now dead. This is not an improvement This is yet another step closer to a lobby game like LoL.

Probably an annoyed post to say the least

Sadly…. no, I wasn’t really annoyed. If you check back through my posting history, I’ve been calling them out on this for at least a year now. I’m also a WvW player, and have been calling them out on their identical behavior on that front as well. I’ve seen enough of how Anet behaves to have seen this one coming a mile away, as it’s the same pattern they’ve displayed at every possible opportunity. They’ve taken the two most stable and long lasting playerbases in ALL MMOs, and treated them like they’re nothing. At best, they’ve given some lip service, or false promises (check out the threads with Dev posts in the WvW section, they’re very telling), but have failed to deliver. What’s worse, is that when they ask for community input, they always go about doing the exact opposite of what the community asks for (see the CDI on Population imbalances).

Anet is great at hype, but abysmal at delivering on that hype. They act like defiant children and do the opposite of what’s asked or requested. They push things out without even a second of forethought. They sacrifice the long term in favor of turning their game into a giant tourist trap. They refuse to fix severely broken aspects of their game that has been around since at least the betas, even when a Dev is caught in a screenshot being subjected to it, and then turn around and try to lay the blame on the community (Hugh glitching through a gate in WvW, then saying the countless reports and videos delivered to them were unclear on what the problem is, and at least 6 months later, that glitch STILL hasn’t been fixed). Their egos run very high, even though they don’t really have a whole lot to be proud of here.

This isn’t anything new for them. In fact, it really is par for the course. The deeper you look into it, the worse they turn out to be. There were telltale signs at launch that they had no idea what they were doing, but they could be given the benefit of the doubt. As time has gone on, their true colors became harder and harder to conceal. Now, everyone can see that the emperor is actually naked. While their art department is fantastic, their design decisions are horribly flawed at best. To put it crudely, Anet needs an enema, because there’s a lot of crap in that office.

As someone that’s been studying and creating RPGs for over 20 years, I can honestly say that this game is a unmitigated disaster. It’s not even something that can be fixed either. The majority of the game would need to be rebuilt from the ground up. Aside from the art team, the bulk of the staff would need replaced. The countless players they’ve already lost will never come back. It’s just a giant quagmire of failure at this point. Yet, mark my words, they’ll toss out some placebo to try to keep the unhappy players quiet, or just plain ignore reality and announce that this was a “rousing success”. It’ll be a mountain of BS, but…. that’s just how Anet and NCSoft roll.

So I’m not annoyed, I’ve just seen through their lies a long time ago and now just call it like it is. They don’t actually care about having even a somewhat decent game, just a quick cash grab. I give credit where it’s due, but I also have no problem calling them on it when they screw up. Unfortunately, the latter is commonplace, while them actually getting something right is seen less often than Bigfoot.

Why should he be forgiving to ANET if he doesn’t like the changes they’ve made in the game? They haven’t really tried that hard in fixing all the problems that people have had, since there are still issues that have been going on since launch that are yet to be addressed. They had topics on forums asking for input about sigils and runes and didn’t use a single idea expressed from fans.

Its almost been 2 years since launch, and my main char still has a glitched story event that I stopped trying to get past because it was irritating not being able to progress ( I reported the bug and haven’t heard anything back about it).

I didn’t take the OP’s post as slamming GW2 and calling it the worst game ever. I think hes entitled to be disappointed and he didn’t seem to be over the top with anything.

And people can still play a game despite them being disappointed in it.

It’s an MMO. There are always a huge number of issues… and you know what? MMO players have wildly different viewpoints and desires. No matter how many issues they ‘fix’, just as many will pop up for people who desire the opposite (and sure, this doesn’t really apply to a bugged story mission; I agree that that’s probably lame for everyone, but I’m not saying the game is perfect). They may not have gotten everything right, but they are clearly trying to make the game better for players. If you honestly think the game has barely improved at all since launch, you either haven’t been paying attention, or you’re foolishly assigning your own individual fantasy for a ‘perfect game’ to the entire community and assuming everyone else shares your views. Furthermore, if you do feel that it’s still terrible, why are you still here? After a year and a half of disappointment, why are such people still giving the game a chance? Are they so masochistic that they’ll endure the misery of a bad game just so they can whine to a screen?

Even beside that, the post reeks of contradictions. The poster lists “family friendly” art style as a negative, yet they seem to think highly enough of WoW to ‘threaten’ to return to it? A game with an even more ridiculous and cartoony art style? Story seems to be another complaint, and still, they mention WoW again? A game whose story is so utterly generic that it literally rehashes the same, tired “hero being corrupted into villain” trope over and over? There are numerous other examples, but that should get the point across.

Furthermore, the game doesn’t ‘need’ anything. People who claim that the game needs ‘huge reworkings’ more commonly mean to say: “In order for the game to meet my own personal fantasy, it must do so and so, even at the expense of sacrificing its own vision and integrity. If it doesn’t, it is a terrible game.” And you know, for people like that, the game probably is terrible. But that just brings up my earlier question. If they feel the game is terrible, why do they continue playing? Why do they pour ‘1000+’ hours into a game they view so negatively? Why do they not simply move on? It is beyond foolish to play a game that is currently terrible, simply because you believe it is the duty of the developers to change everything just to fit your individual ideal of a ‘perfect game’. Play the game for what it is, because it’s unfair to demand sweeping overhauls with such absolute and self-righteous language, unfair to speak for anyone other than yourself, simply because you want the game to be something that it currently isn’t.

Of course, I’m drifting into topics that apply to the forum community as a whole, rather than just this individual post… but I think my point still applies in more ways than one.

I’d figure that someone on TC would know the answer to the “Why would people who dislike the game keep logging on?” question. The answer is the community, which Anet has just done irreparable damage to. Even if it’s not a server-wide community that keeps people coming back, it’s the smaller communities within the guilds. The maps where the megaserver system has been introduced has even scattered guildmates.

whatever happens, i can only say: do NOT got to Wildstar. it’s another NCSoft product, so it’ll just be more of the same there. Except there, you’ll have to pay a subscription fee for them to neglect you. Personally, I recommend TSW or CO. They’re both pretty decent games that have dwindled down to mostly just RPers left. A sudden influx of a few thousand RPers would do wonders for both of them.

Personally, some of us out on Blackgate (who have, for example, been steadfast members of the Blackgate community long before release to say nothing of our rise during S1) are enjoying the added challenge and pressure.

I categorically refute any suggestion, as a WvW-active Blackgate PvX guild master, that 2v1 is any form of exploit or any kind of situation that requires any sort of developer intervention. Categorically incorrect.

The entire premise behind the 3-way WvW design, based off DAoC’s RvR mechanics, is that when you get into a situation where a major power (i.e. Blackgate) starts completely dominating, the other two forces are SUPPOSED to band together to punish them in a way that is EXTREMELY difficult to counteract. This is the whole point of the system! That’s how you maintain equilibrium and prevent the entire system from simply breaking down when one side gets too powerful.

In other words, this is what’s supposed to happen when a server like Blackgate is dominating! I’m just surprised it took this long. I had us pegged for “dead meat” as soon as the first week of S2 started.

(See also, for the more academically minded: basic game theory, basic strategy, any cursory examination of a history of international relations viewed from a power context.)

On behalf of those of us Blackgate players who both (1) understand the system and (2) appreciate the added challenge, we apologize for the tears. From what I’ve seen in chat and out among the Blackgate WvW community (at least during the weird hours my guild plays) it is categorically not reflective of the majority of BG players.

Cheerfully,

This guy gets it. People should listen to him. They probably won’t, but… well, they should. There’a reason the TC/BG/KN 3 week lovefest happened, and guys like this were a big part of the overabundance of mutual respect. While the people complaining are a big part of why this current 2v1 is so entertaining. Sure it’s just a very vocal minority, but it’s certainly an amusing minority.

WvW 2v1 is fun enough for you??? How about during the entire season were you’d be fighting against 2 conspired zergs from each alliances. Meanwhile Blackgate TS is going through ddos attack every so often. Well sure enough JQ and TC are completely enjoying this moment to take advantage of the situation and they are absolutely not subjected to penalty. I think ANet needs to change how WvW mechanics work as opposed to pve perspective. Unlike GW1 they have skills changed when you switch between pve/pvp maps. I think they should do exactly the same thing over here in GW2. Skills should not be limited to 5 (10 if includes friendly target) targets. This makes the challenges in WvW easy to be manipulated against the favor of fair games.

Blackgate Power

working as intended. all of it. trying to have Anet change the mechanics won’t change it.

Honestly, there is no better teacher than just going out and screwing up. Mistakes are more valuable than success, because we can study our mistakes and improve. Your own server may have a community site with guides and a wealth of information. You should find these and study them as much as possible. But that’s only just the foundation, beyond that is all first hand experience. Make sure to own up to your mistakes, and examine them without personal bias. See what went wrong, and how you can fix it for your next attempt and never ever give up. As long as you keep trying, you’ll continue to improve. It’s not something that happens overnight, but something that happens over the course of several months. And make sure you never assume that you know it all, there’s always more you can learn. When you stop trying to learn, you’ll find that you’ll quickly fall behind.

Wasn’t a thread exactly like this one already made a couple of months ago? What has changed since then? These threads are a nice way to get the community feeling like something is getting changed with WvW but is any of this actually going to be implemented?

We’re just spinning our wheels here, Anet isn’t going to implement the massive shifts needed to bring WvW into balance. This same kitten has happened time and time again where they ask us to make a thread listing all the problems we feel need fixing with WvW and then they look at it nod their heads go “uh huh, we’re taking this into consideration” and leave to work on how to implement more useless PvE stuff into WvW like the failure that EotM was.

Please don’t delete my post Anet, rather, prove me wrong. Show the WvW community that you are actually paying attention to it.

yeah. we’ve definitely played this game before. there were multiple CDI threads. the first was “what’s WvW’s biggest problem” then the next one revolved around the most given answer of population imbalance. the one after focused on the seconds most given answer in the first thread, commander and squad functionality.

the result of the population imbalance was that they ignored all of the pages of answers from the community, and actively took steps to make superstacking worse. the result of the commander and squad thread was perfectly designed system hand delivered to them by the community, which we’ve never even heard a peep about.

i agree with you 100% that continuing to ask questions they’ve been given the answers to countless times isn’t going to do anything. it’s a thinly veiled attempt to pacify the playerbase, even though a large number of the players are well beyond the point where pacification is possible.

they asked their questions, they got their answers. if they haven’t started working on that already, this ship is going to go down faster than the TORtanic. the fact that they’re still asking the same questions after all these months must be their way of saying “women and children first.”

Actually I can’t remember when was the last time a Developer said “rpg” when talking about Guild Wars 2. They refer to the game as simply “mmo”, far as I remember. Just sayin’, and it doesn’t mean you’re wrong when you say we have same rights as any other game community, and are not second class players.

They may not say it openly anymore, but it doesn’t actually matter whether they say it or not. MMORPG is pretty much plastered all over their official wiki page: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/NCsoft as well as pretty much anywhere their product is sold. (interestingly enough, they described Anet as “The creators of one of the most successful MMORPG franchises in the world – Guild Wars”)

Actually, the only real “right” you have, as well as other players, is the right to log into the game and access the content. But that’s probably diverging to another topic entirely.

actually…… that’s not true. as players, perhaps. as consumers, our rights expand quite a bit further beyond that. it took me a whole 5 seconds to search google, which turned up this: http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/ilcs3.asp?ActID=2356&ChapterID=67

scroll down to section 2, where it states: Unfair methods of competition and unfair or deceptive acts or practices, including but not limited to the use or employment of any deception fraud, false pretense, false promise, misrepresentation or the concealment, suppression or omission of any material fact, with intent that others rely upon the concealment, suppression or omission of such material fact, or the use or employment of any practice described in Section 2 of the “Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act”, approved August 5, 1965, in the conduct of any trade or commerce are hereby declared unlawful whether any person has in fact been misled, deceived or damaged thereby. In construing this section consideration shall be given to the interpretations of the Federal Trade Commission and the federal courts relating to Section 5 (a) of the Federal Trade Commission Act.
(Source: P.A. 78-904.)

I’ve bolded the important words. Marketing an action platformer as a roleplaying game is indeed misrepresenting the product, and selling it under false pretenses. As i said. it’s an extremely easy case to win in a court of law. It’s very cut and dry. No wiggle room there.

Otherwise RPers will be buried under an avalanche of protests even deeper than they are now.

This is something I’d like to speak on. It’s pretty sad that Roleplayers get treated as poorly as we do….. in a ROLEPLAYING GAME. I mean, it’s right there in the title. Roleplayers should be the target audiences, but end up as second class citizens in these games. By a portion of the playerbase, as well as the developers that makes the games in the first place. The truth is, most MMOs aren’t actually roleplaying games, they just choose to market themselves as such. They’re action games, or sometimes even third person shooters.

Yet, those who are completely ignorant of what roleplaying actually is have decided to change the definition of the word roleplaying to mean “stats and gear”. EVERY game has stats and gear. Assassin’s creed 4, Metal Gear Solid. Hell, even Rock N ROll Racing for the Super Nintendo had stats and gear, and no one in their right mind would consider that a roleplaying game. Yet these developers are allowed to get away with falsely advertising their products, and people allow themselves to be deceived into believing this new, wrong, definition. It really just takes one lawsuit (which would be an extremely easy win in any court, don’t let them fool you) to change it, and force game companies to stop this deceitful practice. But we’re a pretty chill group of people, and this has been a gradual cheapening of our genre, so we’ve gotten used to being neglected and abused in our own house. on the EQN roundtable, someone worded it perfectly. Roleplaying has persisted in MMOs in spite of them, not because of them. Even GW2 is an action platformer, not a roleplaying game, and a significant portion of the roleplaying community is worried about being forced out entirely. Yet Anet and NCSoft have no problem falsely advertising their game, and leeching off of the work done by real roleplaying games (D&D, VtM, Shadowrun, even NWN and EQ). Blizzard got away with it, so they all think they can, and we do nothing to stop it. Eventually, we’re going to need to put our foot down, or we’ll lose our genre entirely.

I think that the RP community should be prepared for a worst case scenario, but hope for the best. Use the gw2rp forums to pick a game to migrate to if Anet follows its well established pattern of screwing the pooch. It sucks, yeah, but it’s better that being caught unprepared. Then, if by some miracle, Anet actually manages to get things right (their track record doesn’t give much hope), then the plans to migrate can be scrapped.

Agreed, i must say i don’t believe in miracles, especially when it comes from a company who refused to acknowledge rp at every turn. Maybe when we’re gone they will realize that they lost their most loyal community, the one that if treated with decency does stick around more than a pure pver or pvper. But i doubt it seeing their track record, blindfolds ftw!

Historically speaking, the two most loyal playerbases are RPers and PvPers, because both groups are able to create their own content. Long after PvE players have devoured the developer made content and moved on to the next big thing, the RP and PvP crowds extend a games life for years.

Coincidentally, both of these groups have been completely mistreated, neglected and often times flat out abused by Anet and NCSoft. They like the player turnover that PvE players provide. More box sales, each of which is more likely to make purchases on the cash shop to get all the souvenirs and baubles that older players already have.

commander tag question

Phantom.8130

There was a CDI on the commander tag a few months ago. The playerbase came up with a rather good system and Anet hasn’t said a word about it since then. Given that the first WvW CDI highlighted that its biggest problem was the unbalanced population, and now Anet has added a ton of incentive to superstack servers, I’d imagine that their “fix” for the commander system will be to just outright remove it.

Account bound WXP

Guys one thing to remember: they did not announced WXP accound bound release date.
Just that its posponed.

All informations about releasing it at March 28th is just players speculation.

Of course. Doesn’t change the fact that the community has been asking for account-bound ranks since they released on March 27th, 2013. Nor does it change the fact that it took ~8mo or so for them to finally realize that it was only logical for ranks to be account-bound. Nor does it change the fact that account-bound ranks were announced what, 4-5 months ago now, and the only significant WvW update we’ve seen is the wholly underwhelming EotM. It boggles my mind that PvE can get updates on a bi-weekly basis, and yet the PvP community as a whole sees changes once every 4 or so months. I mean meaningful changes, not the addition of another mastery that no one but the T1 siegemongers actually want. Don’t even get me started on the ONLY sPvP map being introduced since release being Skyhammer, a siege paradise.

For the most competitive game mode in all of GW2 we sure do get ignored the vast majority of the time.

to be fair, i’m (now) a T1 siegemonger, and i HATE the masteries. it turned a relatively strategic PvP mode into just another train farming grindfest, like PvE is.

to me, the issue here isn’t really whether WxP is account bound or not, it’s that this appears to be yet another unfulfilled promise on Anet’s part. It’s that this is a well established and consistent pattern of behavior. It’s that they’ve taken what started out as a game with all the potential in the world, and wasted every bit of that potential. It’s that they’ll just pour more focus into LS when WvW players leave to other options. Not because they believe in LS, but because it’s a tool to squeeze cash out of rubes and they’ll need to make up the losses somewhere. It’s that they clearly value short term financial gains over the long term health of their product. It’s that there is ample evidence of all of this in their behavior over the past year and a half.

if you move out of the cloud, and cleanse, it stops the supply drain. you can preserve the majority of your supplies that way. if you just stand in the cloud, then you kind of deserve to lose your supply and fail your assault.

you could also avoid the cloud entirely by either moving while the cow is still in the air, or through better planning and offensive methods. it’s mainly just good to drain a really bad zerg.

if you find it to be OP, adapt. because it’s really not.

In terms of defending a structure I think anything goes.

When it comes to guilded fights though I think it would be fair to apply some consideration to the numbers in the fight before stepping in.

this is my view on it as well. there are a few other factors as well, such as exactly how close the small group is. if we only have to veer 20 feet to the left, while still running pretty much in the same direction, then yeah, might as well. if they’re hitting a camp on the other side of the map, breaking a 5-10 man group off to handle that is much better. that being said, there are some times where it’s the proper strategic move to hunt down that small group with a full zerg. such as if, they’ve been denying supply to a keep for a few hours, because wiping them with a zerg once or twice will chase them away and allow the supplies to get in for the upgrades. or if they kill our yaks, then we must make the borderlands run red with their blood. and EB. and EotM, and anywhere else those filthy yak murderers may be hiding.

The fix to me is an easy one. Leave the current skills and bannering in place just don’t reset the circle timer. Seems like an easy fix to implement and resolves the real problem.

The silly part isn’t the idea that a warrior can rush in a hold the circle for an extra few seconds by bring a lord up. The silly part is that the entire process starts all over again when that happens.

this seems like a pretty good middle ground.

Hacking/Cheating back in full force, again

in WvW

Posted by: Phantom.8130

Phantom.8130

Over the past few days I’ve seen:

Unstompable player, Player with no cooldown on downed skills, teleport hack.

And quite sure zoomhack is still pretty common too, and not talking about the resized window.

Happened to me today when trying to stomp someone. Not sure was it because of lag but i could hit the body when hitting air to the side of the actual model. Couldn’t stomp though.

I have had this happen with players I tried to rez. You stand right next to the corpse, but you don’t get the rez option. They ask in /say “rez plox?” and I can only say “sry, can’t target you”.

if i recall correctly, that’s actually the exact same issue. it’s not a hack, and it’s not an exploit. it’s the after effects of a lag spike. when the person gets downed, they can’t be stomped, nor can they be rezzed, but they can still be damaged through normal means.

Anet is actually in the clear on that one, since there isn’t anything they can do about latency issues. Don’t get me wrong, they could alter the game design to account for them, but that would mean removing the downed state and apparently that’s their baby.

misidentified cheating is also a problem, because the real cheaters get a red herring to hide behind while people who aren’t cheating are being reported. take the “zoom hack” accusations. yes, sometimes someone actually is using a zoom hack, other times they’re not. there are ways to fire a cart into a tower that isn’t cheating. just set it up against the door, and you can look over the gap above the door to aim it. bad game design, sure, but not cheating. if a cart is firing into the tower, see if there’s one set up near the gate. also, pay very careful attention to where the CENTER of the red circle is, when the carts are firing onto the walls. the center can only come to the edge, so anything more than a half of a circle on the wall and it becomes questionable at the least. it then boils down to three possibilities. eyefinity, abuse of windowed mode, or a zoom hack. Anet won’t do anything about eyefinity or abuse of windowed mode because blah blah blah BS excuse. the truth is, they just don’t want to be bothered, and don’t have the balls to offend someone who might possibly have enough cash to buy three monitors, because they’re hoping some of that cash will be sent their way. which means that actual zoom hackers end up with a free pass, because they just need to lie about it and it can’t be proven otherwise.

That being said, however, there are ways to prevent cheating. The game’s launcher can be set to scan the game files each time someone logs in. If the files have been altered, or if additional files have been added, it would detect that. It only adds a few extra minutes to logging in, which is a perfectly acceptable tradeoff. Programs such as punkbuster can be used for real time monitoring, which would cover most third part hacking programs. Sure, there will always be new cheats coming out, and the anti-cheat program would always be playing catch up, but that’s preferable to people using the same hacks for a year and a half seemingly unhindered. IF they at least take measure to prevent cheating,a nd actually ban players who are cheating, then that sends a message. If they turn a blind eye to cheating and the same person can get reported by hundreds of people for several months straight and not recieve any bans, then that also sends a message. If they crack down on exploits that give people a few extra silver in PVE with permabans, but do nothing about rampant cheating that affects the outcomes of WvW matches, that also sends a message.

They’ve been broadcasting their message loud and clear since launch: “If you have a naughty word in your character’s name, or benefit from one of the numerous design oversights to earn a minor measure of imaginary currency, you’re a plague upon humanity and must be purged from the game. If you use third party programs, or abuse the terrain, you’re untouchable. If you’re a PvE LS tourist, you’re a saint and everyone should bow down and bask in your aura. If you play PvP, you’re contributing to the esport delusions, and get some slack. If you play WvW, you’re not wanted in this game, and we’re constantly thinking up new ways to drive you vermin out.” They should post that on their front page, and call it “GW2 Manifesto 2.0, the factual one.”

I’m very certain that LA will be open for business again at the end of this Living Story. Change will come, but it won’t be as drastic as some might hope.

i think you’re right about that. it would be pretty counter productive to remove a city they ended up building everything around. i can, however, imagine them redesigning that city to house even more. if you notice on the map, directly to the left of LA is a blank area. they could easily just expand LA out to fill that unusually placed gap.

I wouldn’t say its the Zerg’s, the Zerg’s themselves would be fine the issue is the maps are to small to avoid them most of the time. Some of us enjoy running headfirst into 80 people and killing them with 1/2 their numbers but for the small mans/solo’s and unorganized mini zergs, as I said, the maps are just to small to avoid them most of the time.

it isn’t necessarily the size of the maps, it’s the layout. they were laid out for convenience, not for anything even remotely resembling strategy. the areas are put in the worst possible positions while giant chunks of the maps go largely wasted. it’s just another major problem area that they’ll never fix.

Serious zerg question for REAL discussion.

in WvW

Posted by: Phantom.8130

Phantom.8130

I still have to ask, why is zerging so bad it has to be removed for everyone? If it is not your thing then don’t do it. But just because something is not to your liking doesn’t mean it needs to be removed from the game. Clearly Anet wants that mechanic there or they would already have done something about it. And clearly many, many people like that fighting style. Should small groups be nerfed because other people do not like small groups? No.

I know I am going to get flamed for this post because many people on this board do not know how to DISCUSS things rationally (To those can can discuss rationally, thank you!).

But when it comes down to it, this is a battlefield, this is war. Do you think that when the Greek’s first started using the phalanx that the people they were defeating complained to the God of War that it was unfair? No, they worked on figuring out how to counter it because ALL is fair in war. There really are NO rules. If something works, then work it. If something doesn’t work that tactic doesn’t get employed much if at all.

Now, I would like to point out that the AoE-cap is grossly unfair to those that do not zerg. No way around that, I think less people would complain about the zerging if they could hurt everyone in their AoE circle. And in the end, the reason there is an AoE cap is that Anet is not willing to put that much money into more hardware. (At least that is why I think the AoE cap is there, I could be wrong)

here’s the thing. it isn’t a matter of the playstyle, really. it’s the fact that zerging has been buffed numerous times, and has been made more and more profitable as well. it’s hands down the best method to do ANYTHING in this game, and the counters to it have gone from laughable to non-existent. so you either zerg or get zerged. those are your two options. you can do other things, but it’s not as efficient, and if you run into a zerg, you’re screwed. if you’re lucky, you can run while your slow friends get killed. and all they need to do is just spam 1 and F to collect all the lootbags.

it’s a matter of balance, and the balance is completely out of whack. so in order to achieve some measure of balance, they either have to nerf zerging of buff pretty much every other aspect of the game. everything from the skills, to all of the NPC mobs would need rewritten. that includes all of their PvE encounters as well, because zerging dominates that as well. it would insane for them to rewrite their entire game, so the only hope for some balance in this regard is for them to nerf zerging. simply because it’s gotten so many buffs and added incentives that other areas of the game are practically obsolete at this point.

what exactly is the point of "Outnumbered"

in WvW

Posted by: Phantom.8130

Phantom.8130

they should have just switched the outmanned and orb buffs originally, and been done with it a year ago. it just makes so much more sense that way. the bigger server will already have the advantage, it doesn’t need the stat boosts. the gold, karma and xp gain would be much better balanced reward for their efforts. the outmanned server is at the disadvantage in fights. it doesn’t need gold, xp, and karma boosts if they’re just getting swarmed. the stat boosts would at least give them something to counter the numbers. the results would be better fights, and better matches.

they didn’t need to change much about it at all. just make 3 levels of outmanned, and have the karma, xp, and gold boosts set at 10%, 20% and 30%, and they could have called that chapter done and over with. the problem would have been solved, and entirely avoiding a lot of the problems that stemmed from just that one screw up.

Is there any incentive to stay on low tier servers? This is what they should have done, give actual reasons to stay/move there for a healthier competition. Or just plain server merging but they’ve been so blind to the server population issue, it’s mind-boggling!

I’m getting really fed up with being overrun by most and now being told that I’m gonna get lesser rewards although I participate everyday – again – unless I bandwagon onto the first tier.

interestingly enough, during the first WvW CDI, population imbalance was the most listed problem with WvW. which they actually pointed out and acknowledged themselves afterwards. and it appears their solution to the population imbalance was to remove the punishments for server stacking (queues), and to add incentive for server stacking (the rewards from this tournament).

i’m guessing that there’s a proper amount of crack one can smoke to where that solution actually makes sense, because anyone with a functional brain can see how stupid of a plan it was. unless, of course, they were actively trying to kill WvW for some reason…. then that plan is the best way to go.

Everywhere else they say there are absolutely no problem with the population and everything is going according to plan =/ But lemme tell ya, for someone that has been on the same server since before server transfers became not free anymore… This is #1 issue in WvWvW for almost all servers except tier 1. And even there I’m sure being matched against BG/JQ must be very dreadful for the third wheel. Maybe they did acknowledge it (I’d like a link) but I’ve never saw it and they need to make it known widely that they understand this is very frustrating instead of catering only to the real “high” pop servers, aka 3-4 max. (I’m sorry for EU, I only know about NA)

I agree with you that Eotm as a solution is moot when it concerns actual competition. But it was a good effort. If only they could think more about people that are obliged to fork over money/gold to have a chance at competition. It’s easy to say perseverance and persistence is what we need in lower population servers but at some point… you just can’t give it anymore. I’m not a commander, I’m not in a big wvw guild.. I play wvw because I like it, I like the challenge and I want competition. I try to get better at it, I play everyday (when I am not on break from gw2) but you can’t expect individuals to pull a whole server and blame/punish them when the others don’t stick around.
I’m really just fed up and this news left me a sour taste… time to give in and move to somewhere I’ll feel my efforts matter I guess.
/rant

i dug up the link, and i was wrong. i got a couple threads mixed up in my head, and they didn’t actually acknowledge the population imbalance problem at the end. the whole friggin’ first CDI was about it.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/wuv/wuv/Collaborative-Development-World-Population/first

so not only did they officially acknowledge the problem, but they were given twenty three pages of solutions from the community to solve it, and they ignored all of it and apparently decided to just steer into the skid as hard as they possibly could.

And lot of peoples predicted this before the release. EOTM will actually hurt wvw a lot and not an implementation and QOL change to queues as arenanet announced. But, arenanet is in their own way… idk what arenanet want to do with this game anymore. I just get bored of this, i am slowly leaving this game, like a lots of friends.

i thought it was a tinfoil hat conspiracy theory when i first thought it up, but it’s actually coming to fruition now. the first thing you have to realize is that ANet isn’t the one making the decisions. NCSoft is. they have the money, so they make the rules. they’ve pretty much dropped the ball completely with WvW, and there’s a lot of unhappy players. they could either use their resources to try to fix the mountain of problems WvW has, or they could kill WvW completely. if they kill WvW completely, that will leave a lot of players looking for a new game. NCSoft has a new cashgrab coming out, wildstar. (yes. it’s a cash grab, nothing more. i was in the beta tests, it was embarrassingly and insultingly bad). wildstar also will come with a subscription fee.

so their options are to either spend money to improve their current game, or con people into paying for a new game by exploiting their hope and optimism. so i’d expect them to continue destroying WvW, to try to filter as many people into wildstar, and the subscription fees, as they possibly can. even if the majority goes to one of the numerous other MMOs coming out, that percentage they retain will provide more money than they’re getting now. especially if wildstar has its own cash shop along with the subscription fees.

the kicker is that they’ll treat the playerbase the same way there that we get treated here. we’re not even remotely important to them, they really only care about how much money they can squeeze out of us. but since there will be alternatives, the intelligent portion of the player base will head to one of those. however, that also works in NCSoft’s advantage, because what will be left will primarily be people too stupid to realize they’re in what amounts to an abusive relationship, who will quietly keep forking over cash and taking the constant backhands across the mouth that NCSoft loves to provide.

so pay careful attention to what goes on here leading up to wildstar’s release, and whatever you do, don’t give them your money. there are other, better, alternatives that will be available to whatever EA #2 here can crap out.

A lot of people are saying the maps are too small? Wtf? They seem to be on par with some of the biggest maps in pve.

the overall area may be the same size, but the layout is the problem. everything is laid out pretty close to the center, and that leaves a lot of wasted space, such as the skritt and centaur on the borderlands. a better layout would really get them the most out of the space that’s available to them. that layout would need to place the keeps as far away from each other as possible, instead of as close to each other as possible. it’s possible to play without ever leaving the triangle the three keeps make.

my likes

1. spending an hour quietly setting up defenses in a tower, having both other servers make a push resulting in us losing everything except that tower, turning the tide through a strong defense and pushing back out to take the map back. that moment the momentum comes to a halt and switches directions is infinitely satisfying.

2. tracking enemy movements and even numbers just through reading the map, and having a team move in to intercept on the way to their next target.

3. working with a small handful of people, and always being one step ahead of enemy zergs.

i have a lot of dislikes, but i’ll try to limit it to just the top 3

1. the WXP train incentive system. strategic play gets next to nothing. forming a blob and running clockwise gets a small fortune. it’s really not very hard to see which one the majority of players would rather spend their time doing.

2. the actual layout of the maps. EB isn’t quite as bad, but the borderlands layout accounts for quite a few of overall problems with the gameplay. the most valuable areas are basically nextdoor neighbors, and the towers meant to help protect them are behind them. it’s just set up completely backwards. with everything so close and convenient, there’s no reason to ever break off of the blob, you can run to anywhere you need to be in a matter of seconds. areas take forever to upgrade, but only a minute or two to flip. even a fully upgraded keep can be flipped before the waypoint opens up.

3. the complete lack of support since launch. there are countless severe bugs, glitches and exploits roaming around WvW right now. hack and other cheats seem to go unpunished. we ask for recognition, we got an endless grind. We asked for WvW to not be a massive gold sink, we got a champ farming train plopped on top of us. We asked for more incentive to play defense, we got arrow carts of ultimate destruction, then rams of gate shredding. there’s a large portion of the playerbase that are, in essence, beaten dogs. some are feral and growling, some whimpering, and some are dead in the corner. it’s not an easy job to walk into. good luck Josh.

Losing HP on inclines--annoying?

it’s made even worse if you’re in combat and have already taken a little bit of damage. you’re fighting and everything appears normal. you take a step down a ramp, and imaginary fall damage kills you outright.

it’s been around for as long as i can remember. i think fixing it is in the “soon” (never) pile, along with pretty much everything else that doesn’t directly cost them money.

How did FA and EB drop a tier exactly?

As my topic states, how did FA and EB get placed in their current tier?

If you look at their CURRENT (not predicted) rating FA is still ranked 5th (tier 2). How did that even happen?

If that is honestly legitly happening then send TC up to tier 1 to replace SoR.

This may sound like a qq post but I am genuinely curious on how that even happened because FA and EB are just roflstomping their new tiers, which according to their current rank/rating it shouldn’t have even happened.

they didn’t actually drop a tier. that’s the RNG based matchup system in action. they got a lucky roll of the dice, so to speak. next week, they’ll probably be back up where they belong, depending on how RNG is feeling that day.

An alternative to scraping PPT in WvW

PPT doesn’t suck, not having enough coverage for all servers is what sucks. It is incredibly awesome to be able to log on at any time and have good large scale battles in WvW.

Hopefully either GW2 starts to attract more players or anet starts to attract more people into WvW so more servers can have this experience.

nah, PPT does suck. it’s extremely easy to manipulate and does more to encourage karma train style play than a strategic one. that being said, we’re stuck with it. there would need to be a replacement for it before they could even decide whether or not they wanted to replace it, and that replacement would need to be extremely convincing to even have a chance.

that being said, i do like the idea of NPCs fleshing out the gaps. what i’d be concerned about would be server load. all the players tend to stress things pretty heavily as it is. as each new player comes onto the map, a corresponding NPC would need to be either removed entirely or placed into some sort of temporary vault type of deal. that’s more signals that would need to be sent back and forth to everyone, which would add more weight to their already overburdened servers. unfortunately, the only real solution to the overburdened servers would be to redesign the game from the ground up, simplifying and condensing the systems to limit the amount of information that needs to be passed around. that’s not something that’s ever going to happen though. it would cost too much money with a comparatively tiny return. at the end of the day, money is more important to NCSoft than a quality product and their players. so we’re pretty much just stuck with what’s already there.

Actually, it encourages the opposite of karma training. Running around the map in one force is one way to guarantee you lose PPT every time. When a server like SoR does that to us we split into several groups and backcap everything they have. The change to give points for stomps as well was an excellent one that does not reward fights of large numbers, as those are usually full of AoE with no chance to get a stomp off. This game has done this point system pretty kitten well.

The complaints people actually have against PPT are 100% that they feel cheated that when they log off, they can no longer defend their structures. The solution is not to hurt the people that play when they can and capture those structures, but to encourage more people that can play during those times to defend them.

hence why i said “karma train style” backcapping is included in that. you’re not holding your objectives. you’re letting the other server take it, then flipping it back when they leave. which is exactly how karma trains work.

upgraded areas are worth the same PPT as paper ones, so there’s not reason to bother trying to defend what you have. if they take your upgraded garrison, you can go take the paper hills. the PPT evens out. strategically, it’s much better to hold your upgraded garrison, but that isn’t what’s encouraged under the PPT system. karma train style play is. allocating people to defense gets viewed as wasting resources that could be additional bodies on offense. otherwise, there wouldn’t be server blobbing. there’d be a distribution of troops. some on defense, some on offense, some roaming. with PPT, there’s a couple of extremely overworked people trying to handle all of the defense, maybe a roaming group or two if you’re really lucky, and the vast majority of the map on offense. if you don’t have a queue, bodies aren’t pulled out of offense. defense and roaming usually gets tossed out the window. is PPT the only thing contributing to this? no. but is PPT playing a part in this? absolutely. the map layout itself is a big culprit, as is the commander and squad “system”, but PPT does deserve it’s share of the blame.

WvW Trolls

A mod/dev has already commented on this type of trolling.

They claim that they cannot control how players play a game, and hence this is not a bannable, suspendable or reportable type of play. As such it is considered a legitimate “tactic”, even though most of us think of it as being unfair and unsportsmanlike.

Enjoy the game people, “it’s working as intended”!

Try reporting them for Gold Selling, I hear that works to ban them :P

if that’s the case, then just….. i don’t even know what to say. disappointing isn’t strong enough of a word. ignorance? incompetence? laziness? whatever mashes all those concepts into a single word. disignorcompetiness? oh, wait, i got it. NCSoft. there we go. that’s so NCSoft.
