What's up with Logan and Jennah now?

Who else is she going to marry? There’s nothing above human nobility right now.

Kryta is the only human kingdom (queendom…) now, so it’s not like Jennah is going to get a political wedding with some dude from Orr or Ascalon.I think prominent bandit or separatist leaders are also out of the picture…. let alone get wed outside of her own race.

I actually wouldn’t mind a happy end for the two of them, but I guess the personal story immortalized the friendzone they’re both in. :\

Not a single white knight? I am impressed! Seriously OP, noone cares what gender you are anymore it’s 2013, stand on your merits not your gender. Your opening statement almost appears that you are trying to draw a causal relationship between being female and being casual, I don’t know if this was your intention or not but if it was it’s quite frankly insulting. That isn’t to say that being casual is insulting, it’s just that to make an implication that you are casual simply because you are female, well it discredits any validity of female gamers as being able to actually be “competitive”

I’m having one of those moment where I’m just so glad and grateful to live in 2013 where a lot of people finally don’t give a Skritt about people’s gender anymore.

Hah!

My engi uses ranged weapons almost exclusively and he runs D/S, P/P, D/D or whatever he feels like on any given day.

He being the aforementioned boyfriend with his thief – my engi is a female character. I realise now that that wasn’t super clear, unless you read it in the context of my earlier post.

I rather enjoy them.

Oh, also, before GW2 shipped, we had this long discussion about doing one tanky and one ranged DPS class, and we actually had a bit of a fight over which one of us would get to be the ranger and which one had to be the tank. Now 12 months later, neither of us plays a ranger. My engi uses ranged weapons almost exclusively and he runs D/S, P/P, D/D or whatever he feels like on any given day.

It just turned out to not matter.

Just forget everything you ever knew about Tank/Healer/DPS roles and you’ll realise that the problem you think you have isn’t one. Then enjoy the ultimate freedom of playing any style you want. If/when you get to harder content like dungeons/fractals or PvP, you can always revisit your build.

My boyfriend and I have played through the entire PvE, personal stories and 99% of the Living Story content as a tag team, me on engi and him on his thief. Neither of us were specced / traited for tanking OR healing specifically, and we managed fine just doing our engi and thief thing.

I think most, if not all of, PvE can be soloed if that’s what you want, but I find it funner with a friend (in this case boyfriend). As a team of 2, we hardly ever had any problems, including when we were new players.

I also have a slightly larger circle of friends for dungeons, fractals, more challenging living world stuff, or socially/casually levelling alts.

But to answer your original question, while a warrior/guardian tag team might faceroll through PvE slightly faster, but is that really what matters? With two people, you will be absolutely fine with any class combination.

So my advice is to play the classes that each one of you likes best instead of trying to optimize for damage output or tankability.

survey: wanna play minigames with friends?

I would enjoy all of the mini-games more if I could play with and against my friends and guild mates. (Yes, even Crab Toss!)

The only argument that would speak against this is the easier access to instances where you would be able to cheeses achievements. My repsonse:

  • Mini-game achievements are being cheesed right now, in the existing mode.
  • It has been brought up so many times with no response that I can only assume that ANet doesn’t give a Skritt either way.
  • You could also, of course, make it so that in instances with pre-definced rosters, points don’t count towards the achievements.

Any more arguments against this?

I’m a female player and feel no discomfort in admitting such. Should I? For me, it’s incidental and few people who play this game will ever meet me in real life, so… meh.

I agree with the kudos for Arenanet and I’d love more armour variety (practical, sexy, ridiculous, comical, kitten, creepy… more of everything) though I’ve a couple of issues with your other ideas.

Player Housing and Guild Halls would be great additions to the game but prefacing the whole thing with ‘as a woman’ doesn’t help your case. Hey, I’m a woman, I don’t have nesting instincts but I’d sure like for people to be able to build cool hangouts for their friends and guildies. So do lots of male players. Player Housing and Guild Halls are constantly being demanded, requested and begged for.

Mounts… Mounts are a divisive issue. I would hate them. I’d resent them, I’d hate the clutter they brought, the ridiculous designs that overwhelmed the armour and weaponry and landscapes. Ugh. There’s nothing associated with mounts that would make my gametime more enjoyable than it is. In many instances, mounts would detract from my enjoyment.

Others want them and there reasons are no more or less valid than my own. However, the fact that the issue is so divisive is something I think Arenanet should be aware of. Adding mounts might well drive off more players than it attracts.

Thanks for typing out my exact response so I don’t have to, from the first letter to the last

It is okay to tie rewards to success, but variance shouldn’t have been treated as a reward. In any case, can’t give it 10/10 for this reason.

I sort of agree with this but it is contrary to almost every game ever made and a pretty harsh reason to take away 3 points as it is more a flaw of the industry. Certainly every game I have played denies you content you have paid for in some way. It’s pretty unique to the medium!

Watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYUng5MtTd8 from 2:44 for a funny analysis of this.

Yes, it is a known concept in the industry, but then Guild Wars 2 came along and did away with it.

Examples that I can think of from GW2 -

  • level restriction on maps is a mere suggestion/safety warning, you don’t even have to finish a zone before moving on.
  • dungeon paths (have to beat story mode to get to the explorable paths) but even there, it only requires one in your group to have that unlocked.
  • Same for Fractals.
  • Oh, and the Dark Reverie jumping puzzle where you have to do the spiral first. Just that there is a back door that people can let you in through, and mesmer portals.
  • Personal story chapters are to be played in order, but I can experience everybody else’s chapters as they happen.
All of these were conscious decisions in ANet’s game design.

I have never before missed out on content because I couldn’t beat earlier content. ANet sort of set this standard themselves, so I think it is fair to measure them by it.

A lot of people want to play bad guys.

in Clockwork Chaos

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

GW2 put a lot of effort into making a point that it is very relative what “bad guys” means. On one map we kill Skritt, on another we’re helping them out. Same for Grawl, Hylek, Ogres etc etc.

We do have dedicated bad guys in form of the racial enemies (Nightmare Court, Bandits, Flame Legion, Inquest and Svanirpeople). You can roleplay them, but not play-play them. I find it a real shame, I think I would have fun running as Inquest for a while. Just think, many regular NPCs would suddenly be hostile and hostile NPCs would suddenly be vendors and have dialogue. Fun, that would be!

Sadly, that’s not the way that GW2 was set up.

  • Conveyance : 5. Some boss mechanics aren’t obvious and the solution isn’t exactly logical. Why would I eat dog food off the ground? Why would I stand in a vortex to protect myself from a giant light attack? Red circles on orange floor? How much time is left? Why is Liadri way harder than everything else in tier 3? Why is meat on a stick bad for you? Why is the range on the first bosses attack slightly longer than the animation?
  • Retryability : 4. You have to buy tickets. Gambits cost tickets. If you die and no one is around, you have to waypoint and run back up. It breaks your armor. If you time out, no one can save you.
  • Replayability : 10. I love gambits. 6 gambit Liadri! You shall be mine!
  • Variance : 10. Pretty much every battle was unique.
  • Bugginess: 3. Players ending up in the same arena, bosses teleporting to other arenas, Crowd Favorite quaggan disappearing, lag because of players below.
  • Usability : 3. The dome + camera. Picking up pieces of meat is really slow. The arena defaults to the highest enemy you’ve unlocked, instead of locking in the thing you chose with the fight coordinator.

I think I agree with your own rating for the most part, I would just change one thing.

  • Variance: 7 – Because you have to play and defeat the bosses in order, many players don’t get to experience the higher level bosses. Liadri, I will never even see you from close up. So… variance really only comes with success. It is okay to tie rewards to success, but variance shouldn’t have been treated as a reward. In any case, can’t give it 10/10 for this reason.

Every single time I “poison” a wooden kart to “death” I think to myself… those conditions really need to re-visited.

I would appreciate if condition damage was raised just a little in general, but as a trade-off, only conditions that make actual sense would apply.

Or, to rephrase it, different creatures (and objects) should have a modifier for each condition. As an example, destroyers would be 100% immune to burning, it would to moderate damage on wood, and high damage on Sons of Svanir.

And what about gay people? Would they be excluded too?

If gay people are included, there will be huge unwanted controversy around this. It is better to not include this.

Actually, the OP made zero mention of “heterosexual” OR “homosexual”.

In fact, the OPs didn’t even disclose their own gender; for all I know, they could be in a lesbian relationship.

:P

I think the ring thing is somewhat charming. If it is called “wedding”, it should be inclusive of everybody. But I wouldn’t even go that far to call them wedding rings; I spent years wearing friendship rings together with my BFF, for instance. In GW, family members, best friends, blood brothers etc. could also share some jewellery to symbolize the special connection they have with someone. This would instantly solve any “lore” issues as well:

  • Sylvari have deep interdependent relationships with others, regardless of gender; they might or might not be romantic relationships (example, Caithe & Faolain)
  • Charr have their warbands: “tighter than family”, blood brothers and similar kinship. (example: Rytlock & Logan, at some point)
  • Humans: BFFs, lovers, marriages
  • Norn: I’m sure they also have BFFs, lovers, and marriages (?)
  • Asura: I read that krewes come and go, but some of them might be more permanent; the relationship between an apprentice and master can be very tight (example: Snaff & Zojja)

In “Edge of Destiny” how Rytlock Brimstone and Logan Thackaray exchanged trinkets when they announced their brotherhood.

Something like that. It would be easy for players to use them for in-game weddings, then.

Because why the hell not.

Allow me to shed some light for you
I wrote this in response to a similar thread which is now in a locked subforum. So some details of the reply aren’t directed directly at you.

Do you think we will see a new map?

Do you think we will see new enemies?

For me, these questions are secondary to:

  • Do I think we will see an interesting story play out?
  • Do I think there will be interesting group mechanics?
  • Do I think the fractal will require or reward teamplay?

My priorities, in order,

  1. Interesting stuff happening
  2. Interesting back story / lore explained
  3. Interesting teamplay mechanics that don’t get boring immediately
(some of the existing fractals have this and others don’t.)
  4. Stuff to do other than fighting
(buttons to press, a healthy mix of my own skills and environmental elements)
  5. Diversity in different paths
(again, some of the existing fractals are better at this than others)
  6. Thorough testing / no bugs
  7. Pleasant visuals
  8. New achievements
  9. New textures and models
  10. New types of rewards
  11. New types of enemies

(You can see why your suggestive questions probably won’t work on me.)

So, why none of us have the faintest clue about how the reactor fractal will look and feel, let alone how the Abaddon fractal would have looked and felt, it is my opinion, based on my own assumptions (obvisouly), that some of these points will be covered better by one fractal than the other:

  1. pro Thaumanova
(I find reality bending more interesting than gods. It’s a personal thing.)
  2. equal
  3. pro Thaumanova
  4. pro Thaumanova
(for these two, assessment based on existing math element / logical puzzles / abundance of experimental environmental weapons in Asuran events, and the Aetherblade mid-boss fight.)
  5. no idea
  6. equal chance
  7. pro Abaddon
(Maybe? Remains to be seen. “New” does not equal “prettier”.)
  8. equal chance
  9. pro Abaddon
  10. equal chance
  11. pro Abaddon

For me, it was an obvious choice. Sorry that we all can’t have the fractal you preferred. I would have taken both if I could have, but we had to pick, and I made my choice after careful deliberation based on my own priorities.

Edit: I forgot to add “humour” to the list of things I enjoy in fractals, and again, I think Thaumanova has the edge here.

Anet fully understands that the players are frustrated. But the challenge is designed to push the best players. If people want an easier fight, there’s the Shadow Behemoth, Fire Ele, Shatterer, Jungle Wurm, etc etc. Hard content is hard. Challenging content is challenging. If you can’t do it, or don’t have fun doing it, find another enemy boss to kill.

Guess you missed this part…

Notice I didn’t say anything about the difficulty? I am not here to slam how difficult or challenging it is. Other than the limited time available to learn and beat the fight (remember how we complained about the last dungeon, or the Trials ANet?), it is pretty ok.

The problem is when you add in all these other factors, what could potentially be an amazing activity becomes a long, drawn out, expensive, and frustrating experience for many players.

I was going to say the same thing, thank you.

Challenging content is challenging. You take away the challenge, then it becomes a freebie giveaway for a mini and Achievement points.

Making players pay for new gear, retraiting, armor repair, waypointing, and entry tickets is not a challenge. That’s a goldsink.

Making players run a long distance from the waypoint or grind for entry tickets is not a challenge. That’s a timesink.

Making players deal with a confusing registration system and significant FPS drops due to the zerg below is not a challenge. That’s poor planning.

Making players deal with camera glitches and domes not clearing out between matches is not a challenge. Those are game bugs.

Nobody in this thread is calling for scaling the difficulty of the encounters down. Folks in this thread who posted their feedback want the same level of challenge with more polish and less annoyance. The encounters would STILL challenging even if every single one of Crazylegsmurphy’s ideas were implemented.

And thank you for this as well, it highlights very very well what the problem is.

Loading screens, best use of waiting time

in Suggestions

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

Loading screens have always been “dead time” in video games. Our hardware got faster, but the amount of data to load grew too – so loading screens are not a thing of the past (unless you load dynamically). While the loading screen is up, ALL resources are put into loading. But it wouldn’t have to be this way.

I would accept slightly longer loading times if a fraction of the resources would be dedicated to keeping some secondary UI elements functional:

  • Inventory window
  • Hero window
  • Chat window

This way, loading while loading might take a couple of seconds longer, I wouldn’t mind it at all – I would spend the time continuing to be able to chat with my party, re-organise my inventory, dye armour, manage my achievements watchlist, etc.

All of these things are manageable even with a little lag or drop in frame rates.

Armour Box Sets

in Suggestions

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

I would suggest something else:

A box for a complete outfit, including armour, accessories, and optionally even weapons.

Upon double clicking the box from the inventory, all items are equipped. So I could have one box for my PvE set, WvW set, Magic Find set, Fractals gear, ….

Upon double clicking a box, all equipement currently worn would be deposited into another box.

It would save us so much time switching gear out and carrying many different items back and forth between the bank, inventory and hero panel.

The motivation behind this is not to save inventory / bank space, but purely convenience. As such, this should be a paid service. I would pay up to 600 gems for such boxes a piece, that is the price for an entire bank slot. I also believe that long-time players who have already maxed out on bank and bag slots might appreciate this as an additional service.

9. I’m not Maverick, I don’t fight by the seat of my pants!

Problem
You are introducing new fight dynamics to players without giving them any way to practice prior to spending time or money. You require players to farm for tickets, spend money on WP, collect buffs, eat food, spend money on traits/skills/etc, spend tickets, and ultimately WP/repair costs, but give them no option to train, or practice for a fight.

This is like paying someone a bunch of money to fight a random boxer, then finding out it is Mike Tyson, two seconds before he sends your head into the back of the seats.

Solution
Create a “training” area where players can try techniques, builds, and buffs before facing the real thing. This could even cost a few silver for 5 minutes in the “gym” which is still cheaper than jumping in head first.

I remember in the Super Adventure Box, there was this corner jump you had to make underground to get to one of the doors. We tried to many times, failed so many times, and died every time, using up many a continue coin until we eventually learnt how to make that jump. It was an unnerving process, the additional pressure + time required to run back from the gate did nothing to add to the fun of the otherwise totally awesome SAB.

We then went onto the forums and asked whether maybe next time we could have an overground stump to allow us to practice making that jump without falling to our deaths each time. Josh Foreman replied, “Sounds like a reasonable idea.”

A similar principle could be applied to the gauntlet.

Personally, i think this could be very disturbing for the person currently fighting. I know that i wouldn’t want it.

I do very much hope that ANet addresses these points before their next release of the Gauntlet, but I’m sure they’ll want to come up with their own solutions.

I rez and also often get rezzed… however it doesn’t matter at all.

When you die, your dignitary buff wears off, so whether someone rezzes me or not, I still have to waypoint back to the dignitaries to get the buff back.

Sooooooooooooooo… this is really dumb either way. —>

Watchknights are a bit concerning....

However….do you perhaps think that using stereotypical designs and colors such as pink, butterflies, flowers, and the like are more detrimental to both genders?

I was going to point out the same, thanks.

Teddy Bear = boy
Teddy Bear with flower = girl

Bugs Bunny = boy
Pink version of Bugs Bunny + eyelashes and hair-bows = girl

Tagging on flowers or butterflies so people can identify a figure as “not male” is something that is being done a lot, and it bugs me. I don’t think that this is the way to go when designing characters.

But if I remember correctly, he doesn’t have anything between his legs. So not really a male after all.

I would like to point out that the watchknights don’t have v-kittens, either.
If that means that they don’t count as representation of the female gender, then why are we discussing gender issues in this thread?
