On a humorous note, this is one of those topics that shows that we complain about everything ain’t it?

“ain’t” isn’t a proper word in written English.

;)

Actually, “Ain’t” got added to the dictionary.

Webster’s Dictionary is not an accurate list of proper English words, and lists all kinds of slang and contractions and such. It’s used only as a reference to understand what words mean when a person uses them; not whether they are proper words or should actually be used.
That includes the multiple definitions of proper words. If, for example, it became common to misuse Jubilee in reference to an obese house cat, they would add “Obese house cat” as one of the definitions.

So, is there an accurate list of proper English words?

I happen to like dailies AND I really like the fact there’s enough to choose from to preclude certain things we don’t like (PvP for me).

I AM getting a bit sick of “Kryta events” being on the list, though. It seems like Kryta is given preference (day to day) quite a bit more than Maguuma or Ascalon. As I mentioned in an unrelated post elsewhere: I am getting a bit sick of being crushed by a flick of his mind

As a relatively new player, I can only assume the current crop of dailies was intended to entice people out of farming Orr (?); but whether or not that was true, can y’all please re-look at dailies and rebalance the repetition of some of them?

The dailies cycle through Krytan, Ascalonian, Maguuman and shiverpeaks events (as as the respective “kills” and “veterans” daily achievements); no country gets a special treatment here.

Orr is not part of the rotation for the simple reason that this would alienate new players with characters below level 70. Orr is the only country without a starter zone.
This way, every player can do every daily if they so choose.

The strangest thing I found was an Ellen Kiel Representative Button (I wasn’t even aware these could drop, and none others ever dropped again for me) from…

A Flame Legion soldier.

Awesome. Please go back and question him, I must know the backstory.

On a similar note, I find it hilarious what any mobs drop; I come from games where different types of enemies have different loot tables (i.e., a rat can drop a ring but not a platemail – platemails are what you find inside dragon bellies).

So I have made it a habit to imagine the enemy was wearing the thing they dropped, and it’s wonderful: from centaurs falling over their plate-mail boots, to spiders with eight tiny pirate gloves, to mosquitos wearing silly hats… GW2 became much more fun the day that started.

But that soldier’s dead now, so we’ll never know. Unless they come back like we do all the time. And yes, imagining the monsters actually holding the things they drop is more amusing.

He WP’ed. I’m sure he was back a few minutes later.

They all do, or we’d all run out of enemies to slay in the first week or guild wars.

The story so far:

  • Aetherblades team up with Inquest.
  • Aetherblades build a base next to Lion’s Arch. (Dungeon)
  • Aetherblades assassinate a political leader.
  • Aetherblades have bigger plans. (Thanks, Mai & Scarlet)
  • Aetherblades guard their airship that came down. (Jumping puzzle)
  • Aetherblades attack the zephyrites, quite a way away in Maguuma. (Dynamic event in Cliffs)
  • Aetherblades run off with their stolen goods from another downed airship. (Candidate Trials)

Most of this happened in Kryta, on Jennah’s doorstep.

Jennah’s reaction:

“I know what we’ll do for my party! BALLOONS!”

Watch the skies, indeed.

I was hoping it would be a method to instantly teleport to one’s home instance (would make sense given the fact we have the opportunity to unlock the personal crystal node during the current Bazaar of the Four Winds event) or later perhaps the Guild Hall.

Yes, I would have liked (in order of preference)

  • a permanent item that portals me to my home (aka player housing)
  • a permanent item that portals me to my guild hall
  • a permanent item that portals me to a city of my choice (but then always to the same city)
  • a permanent item that portals me to my home instance (less useful for me, as my human character has relocated to Rata Sum, but oh well)

One-time portal-skill portals are okay – I actually would like a “safety net” for use in some jumping puzzles such as Skipping Stones – but if it is very expensive to craft, I’d rather not.

This latest implementation of the living story has, if not soon corrected (doubtful), left me with a stain on my once perfect track record; one that I will not soon forget or forgive. Lazily overpowered (anyone can add x more units and + hp) and repeated content that came about as a “fix” after the fact leaves a really bad aftertaste.

My first living story achievement(s) that I won’t get, and yes, I can feel already how it slowly kills my motivation to keep up with everything.

I’m pretty sure this is anets way to ask their players what type of content they want. Completely new lore, or to better expand on old lore.

How is this an either/or thing? The categorization makes no sense to me.

There is stuff that I’m interested in – some of it old lore, and some of it new – and there’s stuff that I’m not interested in – again, some of it old and some of it new.

I’m really not all that interested in the Fall of Abaddon at all, but that doesn’t mean that you or ANet should generalise. There is other existing lore that I would very much like to know more about.

Perhaps l’m a little confused, does each daily achievement count towards ‘Gnash all the Blades’ or does it have to be 5/5 to count for one point toward GatB?
I’ve just completed 2/5 daily achievements and still 0/1.
I have used the ‘rep button’ and Gnashblade symbol is active.

The count goes up by one when you complete the dailies for one day (5/5).

You do not have to wear the button throughout the process, only when you finish the 5th daily.

Do this 3 times for either candidate, so it will take six days.

However, I heard (I hadn’t tried it myself) that PvP dailies also count, so you can actually complete both achievements in 3 days.

There’s two things that I don’t like about the new armours:

  • The male phoenix armour looks nothing like the female phoenix armour – why do they even share the name?
  • Female Asura are using the human male phoenix set (???!!! according to the screenshots I’ve seen aynway) – is that really necessary?

So Kasmeer’s armour was added into the game, but only for human female characters (and by extension, Sylvari and Norn women).

Or maybe they’d designed a light armour set already and then tried to squeeze Kasmeer’s armour into the existing set when everybody saw Kasmeer in her armour and started screaming “shut up and take my money”.

That sort of content would have appealed to me when I was 16-20, maybe. The majority of GW2 players are not in that bracket, nor dot hey have the time or will to put themselves through such an ordeal just to “beat the game” or even to display a title.

I am now totally intrigued by the “magitech” – do you think it is only a random word/style used as a filler so there would be a medium set to release along with the other two, or will we get magitech content? Because I want magitech content.

4. Haunting a player can pay out a lot of points. Use the #1 ability IN FRONT of a player. When they walk into the white ring you will teleport to them and get 1 point.

2 points, actually.

I get between 30 (if I’m unlucky) and 70 points a game. And I don’t even try to die immediately after the grace period, as it is also very fun to play as a survivor. I find both survivor and spirit fun to play, although spirit is more rewarding in terms of points (unless you win… and I never do).

I was going to do the survival just for the points. I started out at 13:00 last sunday and suddenly it was 17:00. It was way more fun after a few times and getting better.

Now the one i do not like untill they fix it is the candidate trials.

I made exactly the same experience.

Achievements and Mini-Games

in Living World

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

  • Make achievements based on how much you WANT to play, not how much you HAVE to play.

For example, in the Southsun Survivor game we are required to reach 2500 points. I would rather the points be open ended, and you receive a “loot bag” for every X number of points. If you’re better, you get loot bags in less games.

This is an excellent suggestion. I really like how you can complete the achievement but then keep getting loot bags if you keep playing, but yes, if those loot bags would have been tied to poitns accumulated instead of games played, that would have been fair towards people who play to win, while still being accessible to everyone (just taking a little more time), and would have obsoleted the 2500 points achievement.

For the record, I think 2500 points was too high. I personally am getting them because I enjoy the mini-game, but if I only did it for the AP, it would be too much. 1000 would have been enough, and I think the “play 15 games” achievement already covers it.

  • Achievements based on skill, not luck.

Remember Crab Toss? The backlash for creating achievements where all other players had to participate is a nightmare for most. In comparison, the “Headshot” achievement in Southsun Survival was nice because it was based on my skill.

Basing achievements on skill is a double-edged sword, as some people have those skills and others don’t. Headshot doesn’t actually require that much skill, just a little timing (and with additional luck, it will be super easy). I believe that anybody can get the headshot achievement, which is why I like it.

  • Achievements not based on being “first”

As I stated in another post, there are a lot of factors that contribute to a player being unable to compete with others. Lag, ability, disabilities, computer specs, etc can mean the difference between coming in first, and coming in 13th.

When players are required to beat others on an unfair playing field, it can be very frustrating. These usually result in players just “cheesing” it and helping each other out so they can get out and never come back.

Very true, and I’m very happy to see that over the course of the different mini-games we have progressed beyond that:

  • Crab Toss: 50 wins
  • Dragonball: 20 wins
  • Sanctum Sprint: 1 win
  • Southsun Survivor + Aspect Arena: 0 wins

In the end, I agree with Pixelpumpkin that these two new mini-games are a nice step in the right direction. The trick now is to create achievements that encourage players to participate and play the game well, but avoid burning them out on the game, or requiring them to “cheat” to win.

I think for me personally, with some very very minor tweaks, this chapter’s mini-game achievements and rewards would have been perfect.

3 different mini-games in 1 month is too much – but they already said to not expect any new mini-games for some time. Instead the existing ones go on rotation. But as far as I know, no new achievements are attached to them, so we can all play them for fun or ignore them.

Achievements and Mini-Games

in Living World

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

I agree with the original point, but I do think it got better with this last patch.

Southsun Survival:

  • Play 15 games —> simple and easy, and doesn’t take too long. Absolutely doable over 2 weeks.
  • Get 10 headshots —> surprisingly for me, that wasn’t hard either.
  • 2500 points in total —> Yes, this is grindy, but if you spread it out over 2 weeks, it’s something like 3 games a day, even if you’re not very good. 1.5 per day if you score highly. Maybe that should have been 1000-1500 points.

But what didn’t we have?

  • Win games of Survivor.
That would have been hard and potentially very frustrating!

Aspect Arena:

  • 15 games playes —> Even faster than Southsun Survivor, as the games are short.
  • 10 crystals carried —> A matter of time. You can also still do that after the game officially ended.
  • 15 crystal carrier killed —> the hardest one (but still 100 times better than winning 50 games of Crab Toss!!!) These, too, can be done after the game ends. And I think you don’t need the killing blow, so the kill counts for all people who tagged the carrier. But I can’t confirm that now. Maybe that should have been 5-10 kills instead.

What didn’t we have?

  • Win 20 games of Aspect Arena

(All numbers from memory)

I’m really not very good at these mini games – I really suffered through an entire night of Crab Toss for the achievement, and Dragonball was unplayable for me due to skill lag.

Sanctum Sprint was better, easier in terms of achievement, and I felt the achievement rewarded me for trying out things and playing the game instead of grinding it and forcing so and so many wins. 1 win is all I needed, and I got it in the end.

And the new mini-games continued in that direction. And they’re rewarding in terms of silver and special item drops (that you can also buy from the TP). Perfect.

I’m pretty happy with the development.

So, overall, the only thing I want to change at this point is that I would like to be able to play with and against my friends.

Immersion-Where is it going?

in Living World

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

I find that add to the realism, though.

In real life, if I want to know what’s going on, I have to get informed, too.

At least in GW, there’s only a limited number of sources for info: website/blog announcements (which you get emailed, too…), wiki, forum (in that order) or if you want to save some time, dulfy.

It’s really not that hard.

…if you follow it constantly. If you are new to the game it might get a bit difficult to find the story of Mr. Sparkles or Canach for example. It could be so easy, those book-carts in Divinity’s Reach could simply contain real ingame books with a few pages of the website/blogpost/wiki-content. And every newcomer or people who missed it the first time would have easy access to it.

I’d also love to re-read such wonderful pieces while waiting for the WvW queue or something like that, without having to leave the game and look for long-forgotten bookmarks in my webbrowser.

btw: some stories aren’t even available anymore on the official Anet blogpost page.

I know, other people suggested to put all the info into the Priory’s library.

The thing is… most people don’t even read the books and journals that already lie around in open world. In book carts, the information would be pretty well hidden from 9 out of 10 players, so I don’t know what that would solve.

I’m a member of a guild called “Commendation” whose sole purpose it is to give players the possibility to gain commendation whose primary guilds are too small for guild activities. When GC hosts events (several times a week), I represent them for the duration of the guild activity, get my commendation, and go back to my own guild. So technically, you have to represent the guild during the activity to be able to participate and get commendation.

There are many guilds who ask members to represent them 100% of the time (this guild ^ isn’t one of them).

Yes I know that, but I believe the limit is 15. Now if I"m trying to survive to the end and I die late in the game my chances of finding 15 motes is much less. So I’m saying that in addition to finding motes, setting traps, or killing players, I think you should get points for the amount of time you survived as well.

15 is the maximum you can hold, but you still get points for running over more emotes.

I agree that surviving on the whole should be more lucrative.

Right now, I find what gives me most points (other than winning, or going on an amazing killing streak), is to die in a mob as soon as grace period is over, be the first ghost to pick up all the emotes, and then play the traps for the rest of the game.

And that’s fine – I’m having fun anyway – but I don’t think that that was supposed to be the point of the game when it was designed…
