A small update from “the original poster”, just to illustrate how I am progressing at finishing up the collection without being able to re-do the story parts:

I am around 300 crests short of getting the third armour box (which is around 2 meta event cycles) and I have not bought any extra lock picks since Tuesday (so all my crests went into the glove acquisition). At my possible gaming times and play style, this translates into around 5 days to get one armour part set. For a time frame of two weeks, that’s about 1/3 dedicated to get the stuff done.
Is it that bad? No. Would I have preferred to get it via the story – yes.

PS: if chapters 7 & 8 will indeed give you two armour parts each, the “grind” for the collection will increase to 2/3 or the total length of the patch, which is an uncomfortable thought to me.

The bandit crest cost of two pieces may not be double the cost of one if we use the following equivalencies:

One LW chapter completion =
One Armor reward (1 or 2 pieces)=
1000 crests

As well, I would hesitate to spend crests on the gloves at this point. I imagine the cost will not change after chapters 7-8 are released, gloves will still drop from the Greater Nightmare Pod, and the next armor pieces may be included in the drop schedule for the Greater Nightmare Pod so we will still be opening it and possibly getting gloves right through chapter 8.

I think it is irrational to expect non-selfish behavior in reaching goals when the goals are selfish. My two bit opinion.

Some two bit suggestions:
Be more aggressive with consolidating LW-centric zones.
If zone are designed to progress most efficiently when players understand the zone mechanics and organize, include an achievement for reaching zone milestones. For instance, an achievement for reaching defense level 4 and/or 5 at any of the forts. I suspect very few players have looked at guides for Silverwaste and there isn’t one achievement that requires them to do so.

Getting Tendoms instead of Fangs REALLY?

in Living World

Psientist.6437

Assuming I did the math correctly, using the general purpose extractor and then trading in the tendons nets a profit of 13 crests. If that is true I would always use an extractor if you make it to the breach, even if you have all 4 fangs.

Tendons give like 12 while fangs give 25.

Has the crests for tendons exchange been lowered? According to wiki it was/is 25 crests per tendon. If it has been lowered to 12 then it costs 80 copper per failed attempt at a fang.

Why?

The same reason Direct TV and other companies offer low introductory rates when entering into a long turn commitment. Once consumers invest time, effort or money into a goal they are more likely to continue investing even if the requirements continue to escalate.

Imho, company stores should not offer long term goals unless they are clear with the long term requirements.

@Prientist:
What I’m saying is this is Anet. Expect the unexpected! The season just started. You had it easy last patch plus you got to profit farming keys. I had to spend my crests on armor pieces for lack of having alts. So please stop whining.

Anet pulled a classic bait and switch.

At the risk of making this into an argument, do you consider pointing out that it looks like a bait and switch is whining? Because that is what I am pointing out. You may applaud the behavior or be fan enough to shrug off a bait and switch, but I am not. If I expected a change in acquisition methods, I would not have replayed the story on 2 more characters. If I were a developer I would be disappointed if even my defenders expected me to bait and switch.

Psientist.6437

My alts are all mules so I had to farm badges last patch. Collecting 3k badges wasn’t hard at all. The more events are completed on a map and the more keeps remain under pact control the higher the rewards. The more bosses are killed during the breach the higher the reward. You can even collect multiple organs during one breach. The amber boss usually dies within a minute. There is plenty of time left to run to the orange keep and collect an organ there as well. You don’t even have to kill silver and gold to collect an organ. Just tagging them will suffice. Bottom line. Is it a grind? Hell yes! But it won’t take more then a few days of active participation.

So, instead of standing around shoveling kitten at Amber all day, this time around you get to play the content as it was intended.

P.S. Players complaining about wasting badges on keys, you get no sympathy from me. You sow what you reap.

I imagine you mean “you reap what you sow”. Are you suggesting that using the keys was somehow against the rules or evil in some way? I agree that the amber chest farm was nuts and detracted from the zone. However, for many, myself included, used keys because we didn’t know the acquisition method for multiple armor pieces was going to be changed and keys were a good choice to spend crests.

By omitting alt armor acquisition Anet ensures there is always a sizable amount of players around, so latecomers don’t find themselves on a deserted map, therefore unable to complete achievements.

This replaces shovel farming as a new incentive to ensure players keep doing events in the new map.

This was intended and won’t change no matter how much people complain.

Want the new armor? Do the grind!

Many players, including myself would have saved their crests, rather than farming chests. Players expect some level of continuity, dependability with acquisition methods. This change strikes me as taking advantage of that expectation.

Boost the Inflation

The term inflation, even within the semantic context of economic discourse, follows modifiers such as currency, price, demand-pull, cost-push, etc. Demanding that the term inflation only references quantity theory is not accurate. Whenever I read professional articles or texts about the connection between price inflation and currency inflation, the author makes the distinction clear.

Consider the effect of the modifier for inflation that the OP chose and its effect on their argument. _The_inflation….

I think many of the amateur economists on this forum hide behind semantics because currency quantity theory is difficult to structure within an economic ecosystem that uses a dozen plus cross referenced currencies, guaranteed employment and universal production.

Begs the question then of why limit AH (strange that it is called AH and not TP in the linked graphic) in the Chinese version. Is there a major difference between the amounts of items and gold generated by each version?

Its called AH and not TP because whoever photoshopped (translated the graphic from chinese to english wording) didnt know better.

Some of the major differences between the chinese and NA/EU version is that they are first of all separate clients (different games) and they follow different business models.

Does having different clients and different business models effect the TP though? If both versions generate player wealth at the same speed and the US version’s TP is a boon for controlling wealth why does the Chinese version limit TP transactions? I realize that is a big question and I am not trying to have an argument with you Wanze, just curious.

Please No Profession Loot

As one of those who have, in the past, complained about item drops not being something I would use on my characters, it feels like this change is barking up the wrong tree. I get plenty of profession appropriate drops as it is. What I don’t get in drops, and why I salvage those puppies, is stat combos that I prefer. It feels to me like ANet is fixing the wrong problem, and that for me this update will not change whether I use drops or not.

If the stats you want can be crafted, then this change will effect how you use drops.

In my opinion, this thread is an example of an existing storm system with lots of charge striking at anything that dares present a target.

How to apply this change to character selection risk assessment:

Do you plan on collecting or crafting gear for the character up to and including Ascended rarity?

If yes, then this change will make the calories a player spends on gearing the character more efficient.

This change will not generate competitive profession forces until that character begins working towards Legendary rarity, NPC offerings, or non-gear resources such as gems. Imo, the professions that are the best earners towards those workloads now will also be the best earners after the update.

If all I’m doing is salvaging them, then it doesn’t matter whether I am crafting with those mats or selling them to buy the stuff I want. I will still not be slotting the gear I get as drops. If the change in drops is “scarcely noticeable” then the likelihood of getting the desired stat comb will improve by so little that it will be unnoticeable.

I think many players are less selective about stats as they lvl, but that is besides the point.

How would the drop schedule know what stats you want? The schedule would either have to learn what you prefer or have a vector for player input. I don’t think gear with selective stats would work because that is a functionality of Legendary gear. I am not arguing against the first two suggestions. Those features would actually be very useful and could lead to more gear being soul bound and then salvaged instead of ever being sold to NPCs.

I dont think that will happen on silk scraps. It is one of the most traded items. In 1 hour farming with my ranger, i gain around 150-200 silk scraps. So even if they bought all the silk scraps in tp, the farmers will just sell it back up again.

The main problem on this system is like what the previous poster stated.

Regardless of value.

Cloth > heavy >medium

Cloth will always cost more than the other 2 because the other 2 needs cloth as well. While light armor classes dont need the other 2 mats as much.

Given that, light armors will have more earning potential compared to heavy and med armor users will be a fact.

No matter how small the difference in value, it will always remain that light armor users have better potential in farming.

For your argument to be true, all classes would have to be equally proficient at farming. Very few dedicated farmers would agree with you. There would also be as many farming guides for light armor and med armor classes as there are for Guardians.

Your ‘analysis’ ignores every other farming proficiency differential between classes and assumes that a drop selection bias will be the overwhelming factor.

  • A handful of players who regularly chain grenth, melandru, and arah will see some differences, and then realize that it’s still better to run Guardians, because auto-attack loot stick generates far more loot than anything a mesmer can do.

I wonder about people who keep forgetting this fact. Cleave damage matters. The simple problem is that 2/3 light armor class have terrible cleave and aoe abitilies

I think this is the most realistic counter to any argument that light armor classes will become the default farming class. Any small selective drop advantage given to light armor classes is overwhelmed by the general drop advantage of heavy armor classes. As well the market will work to erase any long term advantage.

GW2 and mathematics - The Equilibrium theory

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Psientist.6437

Psientist.6437

Metrics are a form of communication. I would even argue, one could find a language (symbolism that supports infinite workload), within a system using metrics. What a player says with game-play will not lie and it is communication. The hardest thing for metrics to measure though is content outside of the system. Imo a game like GW2, is likely to self select for stability of player intent, but have a hard time growing in size without system wide (and system disruptive) adaptations.

The forums have a place because forum users are self- selecting for willingness to talk outside of the game-play system and talk about the future of the game.

Clerigo,

I think the forum-centered system stability, the cohesiveness of voice, that you are describing depends most on logical individuals maintaining logical dialog. Particpate in the CDI’s and lead by example.

Now that we have confirmation that this will be relatively minor , does anyone wish to change their opinions?

If the change isn’t noticeable, then the impact also won’t be noticeable.

I kind of wonder why they are bothering to implement such a system if the impact is so minor as to “not be noticeable”.

exactly, this is really foolish. Why waste time making virtually unnoticeable changes? what a waste of dev time/blogposts if this is the case.

One big complaint about loot drops is that most of them are only good for salvage/sell and of no direct use to the player. Any nudge towards giving the player more items that his toon can equip is a step in the right direction. They can adjust the rate later, but it needs to be established in order to study its effects. A small change will have less disruption than a big change.

I agree 100% tolunart, this change will make it more efficient to equip any character with gear, up to an including Ascended armor.

seems so…

so basically the game right now has a ridiculous amount of metal and leather over cloth.. they are making it so 5 out of 8 classes will see less cloth and more leather and metal… good job!

That is pretty much the EXACT opposite of what the Dev posted…..where do you get the data for your delusions?

If 1% of the armor drops are profession specific, my medium character will get 1% less cloth and metal and 2% more leather. My light armor characters will get 3% more cloth than my medium or heavy characters.

To assist in the discussion, the math:

Assumptions: random drops are evenly distributed among light/medium/heavy, characters evenly distributed among light/medium/heavy, characters get an equal number of armor drops.

3000 random armor drops gives: 1000 metal, 1000 leather, 1000 cloth. Each profession has an equal distribution of metal/leather/cloth.

With 1% of the armor drops going to profession specific loot:
3000 armor drops for a light armor character gives 990 metal, 990 leather, 1020 cloth.
3000 armor drops for a medium armor character gives 990 metal, 1020 leather, 990 cloth.
34% of the cloth goes to a light armor class. 33% of the cloth goes each to medium and heavy characters. Light armor characters get 3% more cloth than medium and heavy characters.

With 10% of the armor drops going to profession specific loot:
3000 armor drops for a light armor character gives 900 metal, 900 leather, 1200 cloth.
3000 armor drops for a medium armor character gives 900 metal, 1200 leather, 900 cloth.
40% of the cloth goes to a light armor class. 30% of the cloth goes each to medium and heavy characters. Light armor characters get 33% more cloth than medium and heavy characters.

Your math is accurate but ignores time spent collecting the materials. You must apply the current farming efficiency of each profession to produce a functional character profession choice risk assessment.

Does this mean that it will affect level 80s?

Yes it will but the change will not be easily noticeable.

Doesn’t matter. Unless you’re talking account-bound stuff only, any slight class based loot manipulation is bad.

Unless the rate is far below 1%, there will be classes that are better to play for the purpose of profit.

The rate would need to be higher than 1% to produce a noticeable effect. You are better spending your frustration on the farming inequalities between professions that already exist.

I mean, they’ve got to be worth something even if we’ve got thousands of them.

… and I second this request, even if I made the first request.

Seriously, there has to be some thinking about this situation.

This may not be a very satisfying answer. Badges of Honor and other currencies like karma that are applied to workloads that can not change in value are very stable, they can neither deflate or inflate. If I consider the entire Tyrian economic ecosystem, it is tempting to leave them alone until a major expansion of the workload (NPC merchant offering) can be released, or leave them alone entirely.

I don’t like these semantics. Customers are right in saying “promise = promise, so what’s going on?” That is nowhere near throwing a tantrum. Nine months have passed since the original “worst case scenario” deadline elapsed. And everyone is still kept in the dark.

Either give a deadline and keep people informed, or give nothing at all. But not both; you can’t start with one and end with the other. People “work” on a legendary for months, they want to know what’s going on.

If keeping the doors open at Arenanet et al can be considered a poker game, then “precursor crafting” can be considered a very large bet (close to all in). They can not sacrifice this kitten, they must bet wisely.

Hi everyone,

The article about profession system only presented the idea behind this system and we generally don’t give precise details about these systems unless these details are needed to understand the idea. In this case we can’t share details but we want to reassure players that they’re not going to see changes in loot so visible that some components are going to “rain” or they’ll stop seeing loot variety. It’s more complex than that.

The adjustments to the loot system are fairly subtle and the goals are that, after a certain time, your characters will effectively have more components you can use. So it may take some time for you to see a difference, or not, but it’s not going to feel like a very visible change each time you loot a mob. We want players, in particular new ones or those creating alts, to more often be able to use the items they loot directly or get something that is relevant to their profession. It does not mean that you’ll get less varied loot overall. We’ll keep monitoring the changes to kitten its affects.

Thanks for your early feedback!

Thank you for the response.

When you consider what information should or should not be revealed and when to reveal information, consider the fact that your response doesn’t give precise details, only clarifies. The size of the percentage and philosophy behind the increase may seem a small detail to reinforce but answers the question of economic risk.

If I understand correctly, the sound generated by change in the loot schedule will fall below the sound generated by any other economic sound: profession differences in farming efficiency, the LW, gem shop promotions, etc.

From Stephanie Lo Presti’s response, I gather that the increase to profession specific loot in the loot schedule will be very small, a percent increase that is only intended to benefit the lvling experience. At lvl 80 the percentage will be well below the comparative farming efficiency of professions, and it sounds as though Arenanet et al intends to make sure that plays out.

With the release of the new Silver Fed Salvage O Matic in the gem store today, can you elaborate a bit on how the chance to salvage rarer materials of the salvage kits works and gets applied to? I assume that it applies to the chance to get a higher tier common mat (ori instead of mithril when salvaging a lvl 80 sword) but after some research i have done, those chances are nowhere near the rates advertised in the tooltips. So i think its either bugged or salvageable items also have an internal chance to salvage rarer mats to which the chance of the salvage kit itself gets applied to.
In my test i salvaged 1000 hard leather straps with each salvage kit except BLSK, here are my results for getting Hard Leather instead of Thick Leather (adverticed chances to salvage rarer mats in braces):

crude = 10.5% (0%)
salvage-o-matic = 12.5% (10%)
basic = 13% (10%)
fine = 12.3% (15%)
journeyman = 15.1% (20%)
master = 15.1% (25%)
mystic = 17.8% (25%)

My detailed research results can be found in this topic over at the crafting forum:

I second this request for clarification.

Market Implications of Profession Loot

This has more benefits that mere economical.

Those that go around with warriors will get a wider variety of drops, and mostly heavy armor.

This means more people may choose to play with anything other than the typical warrior when going around in PvE, it’ll may profession choices a little bit more even. For example, someone who wants cloth will probably elementalists, as they have less weapon variety and cloth armor.

After some time of people using professions that will give them drops they are aiming for, prices become slightly more event between the salvaged materials, and professions become even with them.

The thing is… how long will it take until any noticeable effect, if any at all?

Once we have confirmation of how the new drop schedule operates, we will see an effect. Markets will react immediately to bring the current value of resources closer to expected future value. The market will likely over-compensate though.

How quickly we see ‘real’ changes to supply, depends on the effects of organized farming.

Sauzo,

Point of clarification; the stats for Legendary weapons were raised to match Ascended gear. Your final point is inaccurate to the point of irrelevant.

I can not speak for others but I like to discuss new precursor discovery methods for several reasons. In general, I am compelled to get my hands into complex systems and a new precursor discovery method is a complex system. As well, when the workload of crafting ascended gear runs dry or for reasons not connected to workload, we will likely see an expansion of Legendary weapons and/or armor. When that happens, we will indeed see a new discovery method for precursors.

If Arenanet et al were not interested in a new discovery method for precursors, they are being irresponsible when they say it is still on their radar. A recent post from Colin mentions precursor crafting as well, albeit as a general description of the speed of developing new content.

My last point is relevant though. My point was that perhaps ascended and legendary weapons having the same stats and weapon dmg was Anets way of dealing with precursors. That way people whining about precursors couldn’t use the argument that legendaries were “better” and that people without legendaries weren’t on level footing with people with legendaries. This way the only difference in a legendary is purely cosmetics, nothing to go with the characters actual “contribution” dmgwise since it is much cheaper and easier to make ascended weapons than legendaries.

Before the introduction of ascended rarity, did Legendary weapons offer a statistical advantage over exotic rarity? Legendary rarity has always been cosmetic only. The stats of Legendary weapons were increased to match ascended stats. Your argument is circular.

I don’t think we will see P2P, that would the equivalent of pantsing the BLTP and forcing it to shuffle around in public.

I would not be surprised if they adapted the functionality of the BLTP.

Change to Gems to Gold ratio?

My concern with the RMT algorithm is the long term demand for gem to gold conversion.

Consider as hypotheticals:

As a virtual game matures, the population can fall and self select for disposable income. In general, the system wide demand for gold could fall.

Profession Loot: affects level 80 or no?

Does running 2 drop schedules, one for pre 80 and 80 weigh anything in server resources? As far as I can tell, the weight of that outweighs any impact on the economy of having no distinction.

The TP Issues are technical issues. While they could fixed, it would be time consuming and we feel there are bigger issues we should be putting engineers’ time on.

Couple weeks ago the TP was absolutely flawless and super fast.

Any easy way to get it to be like that again?

Yes. The TP runs on Scotch. We put in a nice 25 year in that week and it really kicked it up a notch.

In seriousness though we’re constantly working on improving performance and I expect the TP will get better and better over time.

I am picturing the server racks with a bar in front and the engineers as bartenders. May I recommend lambic, a complex malted wine, inexpensive and provides a cheerful buzz.

Market Implications of Profession Loot

It’s a very dangerous thing in my opinion (especially with the current state of Ascended crafting).

All Ascended armors require lots of Damask (3 per insignia, at the very least).

This will keep silk at a premium. (It’s 100 silk per Damask, while it’s only 50 thick leather per Elonian leather)

Reducing silk drops to just light armor wearers is a very bad decision.

Even if it’s just “pre-80”, that still means that light armor professions will have a much easier time leveling than others. (As their gear will be worth more, especially once salvaged.) This results in an imbalance of wealth to light armor wearers.

This change is going to result in an overall INCREASE in the supply of cloth because farmers are smart enough to use light armor classes for their farming character (if this change is significant enough to have any impact at all, why would you waste your time farming on a heavy or medium when you could be increasing your loot value by 5-30 TIMES simply by swapping toons?)

Increased supply + stable demand =

Anyone?

its not really an increase, its making the supply more elastic, which imo is overall a good thing, especiaslly when its mutually exclusive, leather may just go up 1 copper!

the main problem is feeling forced to play a certain class, if it doesnt work for level 80s, its going to make hitting 80 kind of suck for farmers.

Any significant change in the supply aperture of any resource would be caused by organized, targeted farming and the force multiplier of profession specific drops for armor could be considerable. If armor is included in the drop schedule then organized, targeted farming with any profession could more easily target supply constrictions.

I have a difficult time weighing that force multiplier as a pro or a con, especially if I include the benefit to new players or players lvling for lvling sakes. I would weigh whether or not including armor in the drop schedule would increase the overall production of ascended gear. If yes, I would include armor.

Finally a downside to Vol op guardian who has more loot then others, and now he doens’t like to loose his advantage.

On a more serious note, is this panic thread really necessary? The post implies it’s only for lowbies, wich would make this by far not so bad.

I would not consider this as a panic thread, but as a thread played at the general tone of natively exuberant economic ecosystems.

The Tyrian economic landscape changes frequency and shape frequently and there are few genuine, negative ramifications to excessive risk taking behavior.

Virtually, literally speaking; information is as important to the virtual Tyrian economy as it is to any real world economy.

I am not trying to be tactless or competitive, but if we approach the virtual Tyrian economic ecosystem with RW intent and definitions, we encounter the effects of time-gated information.

Change to Gems to Gold ratio?

Been thinking about your question some more and Vol raises a good point. The conversations at Dulfy’s concerning ‘Anet change coming to Gems to Gold ratios’ may be about the effect of upcoming promotions. The effect of promotions on the exchange rate are a constant and should not be feared, just planned around.

A change to the RMT algorithm, even an unannounced change, should not be feared as well. Any system that employs an algorithm has the responsibility to manage that algorithm for system rational stability. An increase in an algorithm’s system rational stability (you can consider that the algorithm’s inertia) would have the measurable effect of being very difficult to measure.

For me it’s not a matter of gold. I have the gold. It’s a matter of keeping promises.

When I need to get something done at work, my boss will have a deadline. If I don’t make my deadline, I need to update my manager why I didn’t make the deadline but, more importantly, I need to give a new deadline. And stick to it.

When you tell your customer product X will be ready by Y date, you need to keep to that date or provide a new deadline. And stick to it, while keeping your customer in the loop of progress made.

It’s a fundamental to consumer trust to stick to your promises. If that promise includes a deadline, you better make it happen.

Nearly one year ago we were told, after already having waited 9 months following the scavenger hunt promise, that precursor crafting would be implemented by the end of 2013 at the latest. This wasn’t any dev stating this, it came from the director himself.

So I want a new deadline, and I want to know where we stand. At this point I don’t care anymore whether the economy implodes when precursor crafting is implemented. This needs to happen. Not soon, not “we’re aware of the issue” or “this is one of our priorities but we need to get it right”, no. That’s not good enough anymore.

We will never get a new deadline until that deadline is also the release date. We will never get a release date until the need for a new precursor discovery method outweighs the risk of introducing a new discovery method. That risk assessment includes being sure the economy doesn’t implode.

I am dissatisfied with the current discovery method as well. Imo, the Tyrian rational economic focal point of precursors is too close to the Arenanet et al rational economic focal point. In other words, Legendary weapons in general make me feel like a mercenary and not a hero.

I would let Evon use a pseudo-cryptocurrency to pay players to work on “Glory of Tyria” projects that are connected to LW. The reward marketplace would include a type 2 precursor and LW plot devices. Even though I am compelled to get my hands in complex systems I have participated in too many critiques of other peoples art to not feel awkward when offering large changes to artistic systems. I am still looking for economic noise issues with my plan.

I think this is a case of where more information or clarifying information would help avoid irrational speculation. The information could only come from Arenanet et al. Could we have clarification on only the following?

Will the planned change in how items are assigned include armor?

Imo, if only weapons are effected, it will be difficult to measure any change in supply of wood or ore.
