You can put whichever spin you wish to put on it but my links are truth! Ranger is supposed to have the “go to weapon” be a bow and if I “feel” I’m better suited using a weapon of any other name the class is in fact misguided (at the very least) or broken.

I just don’t understand how we have the same dev team working on rangers and engi’s and engi’s are getting so much more love. Go take a look at all the red posts in their forum right now. People were upset about the nerf to speedy kits (even though they could still easily keep up perma swiftness) and they pretty much said, “Woops, let me take care of that for you. Okay, speedy kits now gives 20 seconds of swiftness.”

Could we get a dev to drop by here and discuss some of our concerns? Like how they stuck 2 GM condi removal traits in the same spot which pretty much ensures no one will use poison master.

Warrior is just as good if not better with a bow.

I don’t even. Warrior bow certainly is a good weapon, but it serves entirely different purposes compared to ranger’s longbow.

Period why can you not understand what the rangers community wants is what should be natural to the class that has NOTHING?

Ranger has plenty of things going for it, yet you choose to ignore most of them and then complain about it.
You should go ahead and complain in the warrior forums that you demand mainhand mace to now be as much of a dps weapon than greatsword or axe since you feel warrior should be the class that wields maces and every other weapon feels wrong when you play warrior.

Why would I dare say a mele character feels wrong wielding a mele weapon? I have said it feels wrong being better than a ranger with a bow… I’ll grant you that.

…. could you go make a new thread where you ask people to teach you how to play ranger? Your opinions on how you “feel” a ranger “should” be played have nothing to do with this thread. Get back on topic or leave it alone.

That would make me very happy. But I’m guessing it’s going to be placed in the new elite spec. I think I’d be okay with this if that spec also replaces Steal with something else (anything else – but a signet would make me all kinds of happy).

The new elite spec should be new stuff. They shouldn’t take traits we already have and tell you that you need to give them 50 bucks to get that trait back.

Well that’s why so many of us hope that it’s going to be baseline. But I’m probably going to be getting HoT anyways, so I’ll take what I can get. That trait is just too important—especially for P/P builds—to just up and cut like that. There’s no logic to it whatsoever.

We need to know what’s going on with our Ricochet already!

Yeah I’m squeezing as much playtime as I can out of my P/P build in the next few days. If they did decide to move it to the new specialization trait line then who knows how many months it will be until I get to play it again.

Its not OP but its annoying as kitten. Every roaming ranger is basically a walking 5000 radius bubble that says:

Having Fun Not Allowed.

Because the instant you start a fight with somebody else, put your attention onto a different target or whatever, and a ranger walks up, he’s just going to wait till after he sees you dodge something and BAM you’re kittened before you even knew he was there. Even if you survive the initial burst you’re not going to escape the ridiculous autoattacks unless you’re purposefully holding a large portion of your utility in reserve on the off chance that one of these guys shows up. Unbelievably, I find myself doing this now as just standard practice while roaming.

Basically they might not be so OP in a 1v1, but the map pressure they exert is ridiculously out of line with all other classes.

I’d much rather have a ranger +1 a fight than a thief. There are a lot more ways to counter the ranger and it’s easier to escape if u need to. Plus if a thief does +1 you have no choice but to focus him because if you don’t he will drop shadow refuge on the player you were fighting if you down them first.

I’ve easily gone 1v2 or 3 against rangers, I’ve done it against thieves but it’s a nightmare because you can down them multiple times and they just stealth res over and over. Try to AoE them and they end up rallying off an eagle gryffin that aggroes from halfway across the map.

But let’s not pretend like it doesn’t suck when anyone +1’s a fight. Once again this complaint isn’t a ranger problem.

The point isnt’ that rangers are too strong when they +1.

The problem is that it feels unfair to play against, to a far worse degree than thief burst, which lets face it is pretty unfair already. Note that I’m not talking about “omy 1v2 so unfair.” I mean that there is pretty much no opportunity for you to even interact with the ranger. When a thief comes in they generally blow their mobility to reach you quickly, making it much easier to then run away from them immediately compared to the ranger who usually has mobility options on swap and doesn’t even need to close the distance.

Against thieves defensive options feel useful. Not so much with the ranger.
As the thief blows initiative against your blocks/evades they lose damage options. As you run away from the ranger you’re furiously blowing big cooldowns just to deal with their autoattacks, and running away only makes the auto stronger.

The thing that makes it feel unfair and cheesy is the lack of interaction, not really the power level. Half the time when a thief jumps you, you think something like “ok, cheap, but at least he timed heartseekers to avoid my dodges and interrupted my heal well.” When a ranger jumps you, 99% of the time they don’t do jack besides 211111111.

Basically, playing longbow ranger means that you could literally never ever have played ranger even once before, and still walk into a fight and totally leave somebody with 0 options. No other class does that as cheaply, and cheap is absolutely the right term here..

Oh so we are discussing your “feelings” now. Okay guys let’s all sit down, hold hands and discuss how it makes you feel when players don’t respect your 1v1’s.

I’m making statements regarding the health of the game. If you want me to talk about feelings, I can tell you about how I find rangers laughable when roaming because they suck so bad and are always so eager to add one more to the list of victims im killin 1v9 so that I can feel more satisfied as i show these players how terribad they are.

Just about every single full time WvW player hates this idea, it destroyed server balance, flooded map ques, brought in tons of pve players just looking for rewards so they could get skins, and burned out tons of commanders..

The idea of tokens is nice, but I think Im safe to say the majority of us DO NOT want another Tourney.

Nailed it. No more tournies until they fix coverage and population problems.

But what class isn’t easier in a zerg? Especially when you outnumber the opponents. Heck the majority of guardians are just running around wearing out the 1 button to make sure they hit everything with their loot stick. The average warrior rotation is 1,2,3,4,5. Of course none of that is optimal play in a zerg but neither is being a longbow ranger.

The discrepancy when +1ning someone or a group, is that a Ranger can just spam 1, and occasionally 2 and be just as effective as a meditation guard, glass thief, s/f ele, glass engi (which takes coordination, setup and often close range), and all a Ranger has to do is press a button.

Are you going to argue that it’s harder for a thief to +1 and down someone that is already at 50% health than it is for a ranger?

While a thief has to steal, cloak and dagger, backstab, that will put them in melee range, and often you can see them coming and if you dodge their steal, the whole burst is null and the thief is in Melee range.
Guardian has to use meditations, come into melee range and use several skills and often it’s a well-known rotation (you see the focus shield, be ready to dodge) which can be dodgeable.
Scepter Focus eles have to come fairly close to you and have to use an insane number of skills, etc.
A ranger can achieve the same from 1500+ range and with a button or 2.

Really!? You can just dodge!? Why is it so impossible to dodge a ranger but when fighting any of the other classes that’s a perfectly acceptable answer?

And yeah sorry, pressing a couple extra buttons isn’t really a challenge. Maybe it’s because I use a gaming mouse… is it hard because you have to stretch your fingers on the keyboard or something? I’m really not getting your complaint.

If you are running full glass and you are +1’ing all you have to do is check the opponents buffs to make sure they aren’t invuln or anything and then use your burst. Doesn’t matter what you are running. Every class does this in a different way but the end result is the same.

If you want to have a serious conversation about how safe and easy it is to be a ranger than the discussion needs to be in a 1v1 scenario. Those are the fights where the rangers need to set up CC combos and use multiple skills to stay alive. If it’s a 1v1 and the ranger is killing you by only pressing 1 and 2 then that is definitely your problem. You can’t come claim rangers are OP because they beat you when you are outnumbered, that just doesn’t make sense.

Again, that’s very true, and a good point. I just find rangers particularly problematic because they have fast damage at a very long range. At least if it’s some baddie 66002 instagib thief, they have to come into melee range to do anything.

It’s nice that we can agree on some things. xD

Unless they decide to run pistol pistol which is actually pretty hilarious to run. Plus ricochet does a crap ton of aoe damage.

That’s because thieves either learn to play or spend their wvw time dead. No matter whether they’re solo roaming, group roaming, small scale fight, zerg fight. It’s not neccessarily the class that makes them scary but the player behind it.

That’s not true at all. You can easily throw on a full burst build and run around ganking players that are low health because they are fighting or uplevels. Or you can run a thief party, focus targets and be virtually unkillable thanks to the combined stealth.

Basically all the stuff that people here are complaining about rangers doing. The big difference is it is a lot safer to play a thief because you have easy access to stealth and the best mobility in the game. Plus they are going to be even easier to play after the trait change since they can now go full into shadow arts or trickery without sacrificing their burst.

Some of the complaints in this thread are that rangers have it easy when they can hide in a zerg or on a wall. Well no crap. Who doesn’t. I’m a crappy thief and I can easily pick off a player in the back of a zerg, port stomp him, and escape.

Oh come on, don’t come with invented arguments – you can also run around with your zerker’s ranger and gank uplevels – you got my point, don’t invent stuff to pretend you didn’t.

What am I inventing? This is exactly the kind of stuff people in this thread are complaining about. Rangers that come in and +1 fights when you are already low. Look through the posts and see how many times people say they have no problem fighting a ranger 1v1. You play a d/d ele. A ranger has to be 100% full glass and you have to be bad at your rotations for them to be able to out dps your sustain.

There is nothing safe about running glass bow. 1500 range is one doge roll farther than the 1200 range weapons and you aren’t exactly lacking on gap closers. Once you close to melee range the rangers can’t reset near as easily as thieves, mesmers, warriors, etc. They have to use everything at their disposal to CC, evade and outplay you. If you are letting the ranger “just stand there” then you are the problem.

I play a lot of classes. My ele and engi are by far the best equipped to deal with rangers, of course. I don’t die to them very often, but the damage is still absurd.

I totally agree with everything in your post, actually, with the exception of the last sentence. In a 3v3 or 5v5 or whatever, you’re totally, 100% correct. But that’s not WvW. WvW is 5v10 or 40v40. There isn’t much I can personally do about a ranger shooting at me while he’s sitting behind a massive frontline. I can run out of range, dodge, and LoS, but as far as killing him? Nope.

Like I said before, glass longbow is very risky when you’re running solo. Way too risky to even be worth playing, imo. I sympathize with rangers in that regard, and it wouldn’t even bother me if they were tweaked to make those encounters easier for them. But when a ranger is in a zerg, that risk is eliminated, and with it, the need to play at a higher level.

EDIT: Lost connection during this – point is, me pressing 2/rapid fire at you isn’t going to kill you. If you really believe that let us both party up and do a few tests. I’ll hop on my ranger, you on any class. Then you on your ranger, I’ll get on my guardian, and we’ll dance.

To the first few paragraphs: Every player in this game has to make sacrifices that’s no different to ranger so I don’t see why your class should have it worse and I need to pity them.

I can die to rapidfire, given the situation (out of dodges for whatever reason, Sic Em whatever)

You said it yourself: Most Rangers have no idea what they’re doing and that was my initial point in this thread. And don’t pretend you haven’t said yourself, multiple times, that the average ranger is a bad player and therefore doesn’t realize what reflection is. And the way ranger is designed it promotes bad game play as a rapid fire, knockback, 1111 can be enough to kill others, especially when not solo roaming.

No the entire game promotes bad game play. Nothing you just said is strictly a ranger problem. There are far more bad players in this game than there are good players. For example, look at the people in this very thread complaining about how OP longbow rangers are.

I’ll just quote what I said earlier. Just because there is counterplay to something doesn’t mean it isn’t overpowered.

There was counterplay to Perplexity runes the day they were released. Did that stop them from being the most overpowered rune set in the game? Nope. Or perhaps we could say that the bugged mesmer falling damage trait wasn’t broken, but a lack of situational awareness on the part of those who died.

The argument defending longbow rangers is that they CAN be countered, but counters don’t make something balanced (though they help). It’s about risk/reward and input/output. If someone can do tons of damage safely with no risk and little input, it needs adjusted. If rangers had all of this kill pressure, but they had to go into melee or channel for a long time or pull off a specific combo, it would be 100% fine. But right now, they don’t have to do anything. They just stand there. It’s safe. It’s effective. It’s broken.

So you are saying the recent buff to LB was because Arena Net listened to rangers who stood still using a long bow and pressing a single key / skill tied to rapid fire?

I more or less said that, yes.
But maybe there was no other way to buff LB anyway as it already had been designed to work without any skill combo and that was wrong.

Ok. Not sure how to answer that other than at least you are honest. Kudo’s and I do mean that.

I disagree though because I see it the other way around. Said ranger has to make some difficult choices when they trait for max damage at max range. Let me repeat that so we are on the same page.

We both know that every class has the same number of trait points, weapon and utility slots. Agreed? If I trait for max damage and range that means I am giving something up in regards to survival. Am I running solo? Maybe I’ll take sic’em. Hmm…server I’m facing this week is low on roaming thieves, forget sic’em and pick something else. See what I did?

Am I in a zerg? Ok, let me pick other utilities because my play will be different. Do I run a trap, say muddy terrain? Lightening reflexes? Entangle? Rampage as one? Hmm…I don’t know. It depends. Wait, what weapon set do I use?

Am I hovoc roaming, ganking, or just roaming doing dailies and looking for a fight. I am not stationary waiting for the loan passer by. This isn’t DaOC whereas I’m camping a main gate. This is GW2 that doesn’t have many choke points

Although to get the kind of damage they are crying about you would pretty much have to devote all your traits and utilities to triggering the damage. So you should be bringing rampage as one, SotW, SotH, and QZ.

Any pug commander that tries to say any profession is worthless in a pug zerg has no idea what he is talking about… I personally love running ranger in a zerg.

Also you might want to take a look at the build I posted in that thread. I’ve used that 900 range build to kill longbow rangers plenty of times. In fact I’ve easily killed longbow rangers more times than I can count on every single profession. It helps to not be terrible at the game.

Right? The fact that TakeCare can’t tell the difference between a good and bad ranger shows just how bad he is. There is a world of difference between good and bad rangers. I’ve run into less than a handful of good rangers in the past 6 months. Bad rangers use skills at the wrong time, they panic when you get into melee, they don’t manage their pets at all, they don’t make use of the terrain, etc.

And trying to argue that it’s so much harder for other zerk classes…. I’ll admit I am not a great thief but that class is about a hundred times easier to play than a ranger. The only time I die on my thief is if I get laggy or way overconfident and screw myself. I can build for a much stronger burst that I can initiate from further than a ranger can shoot. If I don’t insta down them I just hop into stealth and reset and then try again at my leisure.

Same with warrior or ele. Oops I screwed up, let me just nike away.

Also you might want to take a look at the build I posted in that thread. I’ve used that 900 range build to kill longbow rangers plenty of times. In fact I’ve easily killed longbow rangers more times than I can count on every single profession. It helps to not be terrible at the game.

I don’t have problems with rangers because I know how to block, LoS, dodge and close the gap. Basically I don’t sit there like a target dummy and break down into salty tears about how unfair it is that they have an extra 300 range. Maybe you should try it sometime.

I don’t disagree, and taunt plus owl/raven spike is should be good. The only reason i’m leaning towards cats is that the bird swiftness is only going to be useful to the player and allies around, it will be wasted on the bird which is currently a primary reason that i use birds over cats

engi and thief are getting additional F skills, maybe they will rework ours to give us better control of the pets so we can choose when to use things like swiftness.

Seriously, stop it already. There is effort. There is risk. I can’t help it if the person I’m using Rapid Fire doesn’t have good situation awareness. If my target had any sense at all they would:

Dodge
LoS
Hide behind a tree (except Dolly Parton)
Hide behind ambient creatures, dead yaks, guards, NPCs, etc
Jump into a lower part of terrain / use height
Charge ranger
Reflect
Retaliation

Effort in pressing a button and watching things die from miles away? Honestly… any other zerk class has to try 10 times harder to deal high damage and they are all 10 times more risky than a ranger.

Ok so you can dodge one auto attack, another auto attack, sure… then comes Rapid Fire… you gotta dodge that, or there comes the knock back, you gotta dodge that too because if you don’t you’ll eat Rapid Fire… then there’s entangle, the pet fear or immob… all the while the auto attacks are wrecking you. So how many dodges are we supposed to have? Especially when you’re already fighting someone else. Last time I checked, I had about 2.

Lastly, if you leave the ranger alone behind the line you reap what you sow. You have a team and there are members of that team designed to counter that. I’ll put it this way. The problem isn’t the Ranger or the range. It is the design of the game in that everyone looks at the bags of skittles on the ground, aka loot, rather than playing as a team and doing a job.

Ah so while I’m running from a group, kiting I’m just gonna somehow make the newly arrived ranger disappear? Maybe I’ll tell my thief friend to go after him! Oh wait… they’re immune to damage for 5 seconds… oh wait… they’ve got Sic’ Em. Oh wait… they’re 1500 units away from the actual fight… Oh wait… there’s 2 of them, and now you’re Entangled.

This. Anet does a kitten poor job of having an actual dialogue with their player base when they make their monthly bad decision. They’ve shown us that the only way to get results is by rioting.

They can either listen to their player base, discuss issues as they emerge, or deal with the bad publicity and try to clean it up afterwards. For some reason they like to go with the third choice which ends up costing them old players who eventually get tired of the crap and new players who read the angry reviews and decide to buy something else.

The higher you go the more zergy it gets. Tier 4 has been getting some pretty unbalanced match ups lately. I prefer T5-6, you can get map queues during prime time but the roaming is still pretty solid. AR is a fun server if you join a guild or like to solo roam. Not the best if you need a pug tag to follow.

You missed the notes. To address the coverage problems anet decided to make the upgrades automatic so the servers with large off hour populations no longer have to worry about sticking around and devoting hours to upgrade your bl. They can just build siege outside your spawn exits and let everything fortify on its own.

They also won’t have to worry about silly things like wasting money on siege or trying to fight through a solid defense. They can just blob the PvE dino event and the skyhammer will open up all your structures so they can karma train to their hearts content.

If you have a ranger trying to command from the back with a longbow then that is just a crappy player. Decent party condi cleanse, poison spam for downed players, very tanky especially with all the blocks, evades, blasts and leaps in the water field.

Next week it will be even stronger with the upcoming trait changes. Multiple blast finishers, more damage, more cc, tankier pets, higher uptime of regen, protection, and weakness on enemies.

In my opinion thieves are the worst. Even if they try building tanky they lack stability and need to evade and port to survive. They don’t have the tools to lead a push.

I’m going to hold off posting any builds for awhile. When you compare the trait changes to what they released a month or so ago, it seems like they are pretty nerf happy at the moment. I don’t want to post something that they might consider too powerful and watch it disappear (while at the same time watching them give engi a jet pack to fly around faster)

I understand what the OP is asking, but I’m inclined to agree with Shadow.

They can’t continue to keep producing content without some kind of financial support. If you have enjoyed the game (warts and all) then it’s not a huge amount of money every two or three years.

There is nothing wrong with charging for an expansion, but there is a difference between offering up new content and giving an advantage that you can only get by paying money.

New professions and even new skills are a lateral progression. If you want access you pay for it. Access to powerful siege that you can only get by shelling out cash sounds P2W.

Guild halls either need to be an addition to the core game or the siege that you build in the war room needs to be tradeable on the black lion trade post.

Regen is one of my favorite builds to run. I’m really looking forward to it becoming even stronger after the changes go through. No more 1 sec cast time on guard, natural regeneration in the same line as resounding timbre (hopefully works the same way as natural healing), and all the new defensive traits we are getting to make us even tankier.

Plus if wilderness knowledge affects TU like everyone hopes, we can now run shout regen with 3 active condi cleanses instead of relying on EB.

Wouldn’t call this GvG worthy.
It looks very small, maybe 1/4th of OS.
It can be decorated with walls and tower (I guess alright… If at least there would be enough space to play with)
It has traps, turrets and the terrain can be moved during the fight.

Of all the things they could screw up, they just had to do it with GvG. Supose it’s too hard to listen to the community…

They said you can customize the arena by adding things and going with that logic, you can take all the traps and walls away as well.

I suppose that could be possible and hopefully will work along with the lameness of some people to not screw up fights.

Arena still seems too small for a 20v20 or even 15v15. I expect it to be 10v10, but one can only hope..

It will be in your or your opponents guild hall, you won’t have random strangers showing up trying to interrupt the fight like you get in OS. If someone decides to be an kitten just kick him from the guild, you’re better off without those people anyway.

Will players need to buy HoT to access the new guild halls or are they being added to the core game? Seems to me that if you are including the war room which gives you access to air ships, motorcycles, and who knows what other new siege for WvW that the guild halls need to be added to the core game or you are bordering on pay 2 win.

But yea, the price is rather steep. Most I’ve ever spent on (newly released) expansions (non mmo) is $30 tops with no core included.

with Anet the price has always been $50.00 for the add on packs . and if you want the bells and whistles $100.00 the only mmo games that might be $30.00 is wow maybe being it is pay to play .

The price was 50 for GW1 expansions because they were stand alone games that included character slots…. This is just a rip off.

yes that is true to a point . but yet if you wanted to go to cantha or to eye of the north then you had to have them packs . and it might be to you but to make not so much

50 dollars is a fair price for a separate game with character slots. This expansion is less content than the Eye of the North release which only cost $35. You can buy it if you want but don’t fool yourself into believing you aren’t being ripped off.

not everything revolves around damage .

yes the Devourer may have low damage but guess what , it fires two shots (after HoT these two shots will stack 2 bleeds or 2 Poisons / Poison master you pets next attack causes Poison and guess what its auto is a split shot vs one target = 2 stacks of poison and 2 stacks of bleeding.)

it has KB , tunneling perfect for Empathic bond use avoids excess damage provides a good source of Utilities.

if you only ever think about damage , you’ll never tap into a Rangers potential.

Unless they give the pets the buff to condi damage and rework a lot of skills they will be even more useless since the poison won’t be stacking in duration. What good is 3 seconds of poison that is doing nothing for damage?

What I really like are the amount of newer players popping up on the forums lately that are open to changing their builds and playstyle.

In the past people would actually get angry when another player would suggest things like “maybe you shouldn’t run dual bow” or “maybe you should try another pet instead of running only devourers”. They would go on a rant about how “you can’t tell them how to play” and not only carry on running something that didn’t make sense, but also recommending their subpar playstyle to new players, and continue complaining that people kicked them from groups for running it.

Swap all the trinkets to zerk (or zerk+valk), your only condition damage is 7 seconds of poison that will tick for 138 a sec, sinister is doing nothing for your build.

I’d swap warhorn for axe. You already have signet of the hunt for movement speed and axe 4 has some good damage.

Swap reef drake for river or marsh drake. Pets have 0 default condi damage, those confusion stacks are ticking for maybe 300ish. Marsh drake poison still does -33% healing on enemies and it let’s you stack 25 might really easily, river drake doesn’t stack might quite as well but it does more damage.

Also you don’t need bloodlust on both weapons, fire or air would be better on the bow.

Other than that your build looks pretty solid.

If I get hit with bleeds, though, like in Breech, I’m dead within about 20 seconds….so I’m not sure what to do about that.

Try running healing spring instead of heal as one. That and SoR are plenty of condi removal for the majority of PvE. Plus you can leap through it for an extra little burst heal.

Underwater combat in this game is completely broken, that is why it was removed from PvP. It would need to be completely overhauled before they could even consider bringing it back.

The bare minimum they would need to do is make the underwater breather cosmetic so it isn’t disrupting your 6th rune bonus and they would need to fix the underwater stomp (or just remove the stupid downed state from WvW/PvP).

They can indeed check both forums. But the people that are working with bugs are not the same people that usually hangs around here. Therefore it is a much swifter process to post it in the right forum section at once rather than having a moderator simply move the thread and/or have one of the WvW people telling one of the bug people about the bug.

Why not remove the middle-man and just give it to the right people at once?
