I’ve tried similar, the problem is it’s too hard to decap a point. Even if you are on the point first there are too many professions that can strip your stability, or just wait it out, and knock you off point.

I think longbow ranger is going to be very strong when stronghold comes out, that game mode favors us a lot more than sitting on points. You should be able to kill pretty much everyone except an equally skilled cele ele in a 1v1, medi guards can be tough too but they don’t hard counter us like the ele’s.

The bow is great for getting some damage in before they close in on you, maybe dropping a barrage to fight under, but you should be able to beat most people with your melee weapon, then if they try to run you can always burn them down with the longbow again.

I’d say the best way to improve is to try running a full melee build for awhile, get the feel for the timing on those weapons and learn how to best use your evades.

The engi’s grenades also have to be traited, they have to use a utility slot, and the grenades move very slowly as opposed to lightning-fast arrows. They also require a grandmaster trait rather than a master trait.

Arcane blast is a single utility skill on a 20 second cooldown, as opposed to an entire 1500 range weapon set.
Ele’s staff abilities are either far slower or are easily avoidable AoEs, and the only splash ability which noticeably increases its “range” is fire #1.

Kill shot is a single skill which requires adrenaline and has a large start up time.

Positioning is important for LB rangers, but they’re probably still one of the easiest builds in the game to play, and it’s not solely due to 1500 range either. Try playing a glass staff ele in PvP and tell me how easy it is compared to LB rangers.
Don’t get me wrong though, I don’t think they’re OP, but I do think they’re easy.

Umm… longbow needs a master trait to increase it’s range to 1500, it needs a grandmaster trait to increase it’s velocity so that it will hit moving targets. If you don’t devote at least 6 points into longbow people can literally side step it’s arrows.

Not sure why you are bringing up staff ele in PvP when the majority of people are playing the broken cele ele build but if you want to go there… staff ele is just as dangerous to the bad players that complain about longbow rangers. Instead of having to focus down one player at a time they can deal massive aoe damage and CC every player on the point, and they can also drop water fields to help their team.

Any class is going to have an easy time if it is being completely ignored by the opposing team. What separates the good players from the bad is what they do when the pressure is on them.

Are the people in this thread for or against the Stability changes or just trashing the video? I’m a returning player recently and still catching up on everything, the comments in this thread make the Stability changes sound like a non issue that only becomes a factor in the more specific and extreme scenarios, but I keep seeing threads about how it’s such a game changer, so I’m a bit confused.

People are upset with how the stability changes affect WvW.

EotM isn’t WvW. Killing EotM players is like killing the ambient chickens and pigs that hang around the supply camps in the borderlands.

Probably running shortbow. I’m more curious what he meant about the fight being over as soon as a d/p thief gets close… I mean I guess it’s true that those fights usually end quickly but it rarely goes well for the thief.

You are still fighting for a thief’s job when you are less effective at it. The map designs are a the main reason for that, too much verticality that gives the advantage to professions that can teleport and too many places to LoS. The only map where we are superior to a thief is Foefire. There we can use the range to our advantage, we have a nice open field of view and can easily cover 2 points at once. If we need to get on point quickly, one leap will cover the majority of the distance.

The new stronghold PvP looks like we will have a much better shot of making it into the meta. It’s hard to tell from the gameplay I saw but it looks like there will be spots where we can hop up on the wall and easily take out the other teams gate breakers. On offense we can speed the npc’s along and use our range and cc to take out enemy npc’s and players before they get close. Even in lords room we can pump out damage on the lord while staying relatively safe instead of sitting in a ton of AoE. It’s going to be like escorting dolyaks in WvW, a melee player can never stop me from killing a dolyak, but I’ve killed plenty of melee players trying to kill dolyaks before they could get close enough to land a hit.

Edit: Sorry if I rambled a bit, I probably shouldn’t post before having my coffee.

Well I used to have a habit of runninga round for a bit.. or sending my bear into big mobs of foes then barrage from a safe distance and they would be dead pretty quickly.

Now the foes come chasing after me and I have to run around quite a bit as they kill my bear and swap to my other pet and get to a safe distance again and wait for my barrage to recharge.

I have no change of being able to run in any more and go swinging my sword without dying in mobs of about 10 foes without dying.

Figured it was troll thread from start but this pretty much gives it up.

With the amount of players that complain about rangers being OP, I honestly can’t tell who is trolling anymore. I mean the thief forum has a guy complaining that rifle warriors are OP… rifle warriors. This games PvE doesn’t exactly breed the best players.

When trait: Rapid Fire is 8 second: huge difference of “Enormous Spike Damage” than 10 seconds. Example: if it take 10 seconds to kill a thief, ranger can easily kill thief under 8 seconds with trait adjustment.

I do not know why did not include that in his articlet: it make me feel he is not honest.

Because he isn’t talking about the terrible players you find in hot join?

Good players know how to counter the rapid fire and close the gap on the ranger. If they are running a condi build they can wreck the ranger if he is running the 6,6,0,2 build. It’s better to run something like the SotF build that gives you the tools you need to fight back.

The reason rangers fall short of mesmers and thieves in spvp is because of their superior mobility and boon stripping. No one is arguing that SotF isn’t a strong fighting build, but what you are calling utility in that build mainly applies to you and not your team. SotF’s fury and condi cleanse don’t help your teammates, things like spotter, SoR, healing spring, even traited shouts do.

Please don’t take offense to what I am about to say, I’m not trying to be mean or in any way trying to troll.

There is literally nothing in queensdale that should be able to kill you. You need to take the time to learn each of your skills, when to use them, when to dodge and/or evade.

The majority of pve players in this game simply spam their skills as soon as they go off cool down instead of using them when they are needed. This is why so many people complain about point blank shot.

Your sword, dagger, shortbow, and great sword all have evades built into them. You also have traits and utilities that grant vigor for extra dodges. Pay attention to the skills your enemy is using and learn what skills you need to dodge or evade.

Standing behind a bear and pew pewing only works in open world pve and against terrible players in WvW/pvp. If you ever plan to run dungeons, fractals, or be of any use in a WvW/pvp, you need to learn how to play the class effectively.

In WvW it works wonders pew pew-in when you have a zerg in front of you instead of the bear, keep it on a leash so you can remove your own conditions.

Oh and in queensdale you find CM ungeon, it tends to kill people very effectively…. just for pun

And the rangers that haven’t learned how to effectively use their skills, manage their cooldowns , and fight in melee end up being rally bait in that zerg. Half of them end up killing themselves do to retal.

A good ranger should be able to beat his opponent with his melee weapon, the longbow is jut there for when they try to run.

With warrior and with a good buid you will make 2x, 3x more kills and lootbags and you will support your team. I made 29k kills with ranger and 70+ with warri within a year of maining and i was more playtime in ranger

i made more kills with staff ele in 2 months then warrior and ranger over one year.
playtime matters little, number of enemies does. i spent 6 months of ranger in t5, 4 months ranger + warr in T1 NA, and 2 months of ele in T1 EU during seasons. your point is moot

I don’t get why this thread has gone so long. The OP doesnt even know how to differentiate between uplevel player and lvl 80 players in WvW.

The exaggeration posts are too “nmad” high here and need urgent clarify before it brainwash the new players.

a) There is NO 2000/1900/1700 range attack for any class.
b) 4.5k dmg on auto?? That only possible IF to pair up with Signet of Hunt+Wild + Opening Strike. + Invul

Are you even realized if you are hitting a level 1 uplevel player?
Are you mistaken your opening strike for auto attack, that it was refresh instantly when your zerg killed that person instantly?
This is just a too kitten exaggerated statement, meaning you only need 5 arrows to kill a player? Do you seriously think arena allowed that? Just because ranger is slightly good in zerging, you wanna suggest this, but do you know how ranger was treated in other game mode?

You want risk? Well, thats why ranger got “yttihs” melee weapon. Any experience thief see ranger as fresh meat.Just wait for you to be naked without stone signet, rampage, dodge, protect me, etc. There is so many ways to counter the range, go figure out yourself.

I dont think arena is willing to revert back the ninja nerf on arrow’s velocity. Everyone was all complaining when it was firstly introduced. Hence, atm, new range suggestion is a No from me.

I mean, I keep hearing people saying how ranger is trash for WvW but I find ranger quite good actually.

Sure we don’t have a kitten ton of buffs but why would we need when every single warrior, guardian, etc out there already follow the meta builds to spam buffs on the zerg.

If your zerg is a full buff zerg, if you don’t have the raw damage to follow it up you won’t get very far either.

I feel like the ranger is quite good in both, dueling and WvW, we hit harder than most classes at 1500 range while having 2 different aoe condition cleansing for the zerg and AoE damage, we don’t particularly excel at support nor at AoE but we do excel at damage and last time I checked, damage is never too much.

With this said, I find myself dropping a kitten ton of enemies in zergs just by rapid firing them without any chance of retaliation, the best thing is that it only has a few seconds cooldown, if downing enemies or taking 50%+ hp with a single skill thus making enemies retreat or make them useless for the rest of the zerg fight, while cleansing conditions from you and your allies and if needed rooting enemies, if it isn’t considered at the very least “decent” then sorry but I’m probably playing the wrong game.

you are correct. The thing i do not understand with this game is how high damage and access to powerful skill do not require hard effort and high cool down-high risk. I am just amaze how balance work for this game. I am amaze also by all of this being call a fun game.

That was one reason why i join Guild Wars 2 because of the word Fun!. The only Fun game mode is PVE: that’s all!, If Arena net get rid of WvW game mode, it would be good choice. So other player can go where Fun is instead of pretend and believe that wvw is Fun.

In Pve: Fun and challenge never end because there is Risk In WvW: Fun end in 1-3 second because Risk is not require, only reward, reward, reward with no effort> unless with zerg+party.

Fun and Challenge require Risk and Reward! so until Arena net make WvW with Risk and Reward, you will find me in Pve.

Until Arena net make the No Risk Requirement Class Fun, I will be having Fun in Pve

I’d ditch empathic bond for either poison master or even barkskin. But any of those 3 is fine, it’s just a personal preference.

Signet of renewal offers a lot to your team and is a stun breaker, so take a look at that in place of SoS too.

Carrion amulet leaves him pretty glassy, SoS puts his armor in a decent place and gives him an emergency “oh kitten” button. Probably wouldn’t hurt to run that until he gets a better feel for the ranger.

@op: You might also want to test out other rune choices. I prefer krait for the condi bomb.

How about sell us a permanent WvW extractor? Make it only salvage runes and sigils off WvW gear. Most of us don’t have the gold to explore builds as much as we would like since WvW is a giant gold sink. I would definitely pay for an extractor that I could use multiple times.

anyway, I fully agree with just about all of those OP. all we can hope for is that they do a once-over of all the traits and utilities for the xpac. colin HINTED they would. I hope this includes WH and OH axe which are entirely useless in organized pvp.

Not arguing that at all. The trait investment for such a crappy heal is ridiculous. Just wanted to clarify for the op since they never bothered including that info in the tool tips.

Too tired to read through all of this right now but Natural Healing also applies to the ranger. It gives 125 health every 3 seconds, if you use Compassion Training it gets bumped up to 177 every 3 seconds.

we already have RoA for pet stability if you have shared boons and Signet of the wild too .

though if this trait Stability training became Adpet then you’d have more options for pet stability while not using Shared boons.

Stability Training already only lasts 3 seconds, so its not really changing at all. 5 stacks for 3 seconds may as well be full CC immunity for the time its active, which is exactly what it was before. I mean, I’d gladly take a buff to it as I do feel 3 seconds is a bit low, but as far as this change goes it may as well not be a change at all.

Also, Fortifying Bond (which I’m assuming is what you’re talking about when you mention “shared boons”) doesn’t actually pass Stability. Its the only boon that isn’t shared. RaO already gives the pet Stability automatically, though.

Speaking of Fortifying Bond… FB + new RaO is going to be nice. Pet will be getting 6 seconds of Fury and Swiftness for each time it procs (pet gets 3s of its own, plus 3s from FB, and technically a bit more since you have at least 15% boon duration to get FB in the first place). Which means the pets will be ending up with an extra 20+ seconds of Fury and Swiftness by the time RaO ends.

Oh and I wasn’t meaning to imply that I only run Ranger. My mains are both heavies, War and Guard. My Ranger is relatively new, and I try not to participate in zerg fights much; he’s built for roaming. Although our tag on EBG had to leave so I decided to take tag and command; I found healing spring + WH 5 to be incredibly good for survivability. Lots of evades and condi clear from Survival of the Fittest were necessary. It’s far from an ideal commanding class, in fact I’d probably rank it near the bottom; above thief but below everything else, but it can be played effectively as long as your cautious. That’s really the biggest reason why I put it at the bottom for commanding; your level of caution has to be near-maximum to stay alive.

They don’t have to be in the center for maul to hit, the cleave radius is almost the same as the radius of shadow refuge, odds are you will hit. Since most thieves tend to use shadow refuge when there health is low maul and maybe 1 or 2 auto attacks will usually down them.

I never keep sic ’em on my bar. If I see a thief coming I check to see if he is running condi food, if he is I equip it before engaging. Most condi thieves are terrible players, if they get the jump on you it is pretty easy to get out of combat and swap a utility.

Pets- Birds, spiders and drakes are worth trying out. Raven/owl’s f2 hits hard, river drakes f2 hit’s hard, marsh drake is a nice poison spam, both drakes have a bouncing channeled attack that is fantastic for might stacking when using RaO. Spiders offer immobilize and poison from range (good from tower walls and ledges)

Heal- Healing spring offers some good condi removal. It is also the best water field in the game. With GS you can proc a double leap finish with swoop, and drakes will blast the water field if you swap to them while in it.

GS vs. S/X- Completely falls under personal preference. I prefer GS for it’s utility skills and burst. Stun, ranged cripple, evades, block, leaps, and it has the advantage of free movement while using the skills. But there is nothing wrong with S/X, use what you like.

Elites- I also run RaO for my power builds. There are a lot of classes that rely on being able to chain CC you to death. Entangle is great for survival of the fittest builds, CC builds, and runes that proc on elite skills (Krait, mad king, lyssa, etc.)

Use maul right in the middle of that refuge, the cleave radius is huge. I stuck a hydromancy sigil on mine, swap for the proc and maul is usually enough to finish off a thief that has gone into refuge.

But yeah, I don’t hold back on a condi thief, if they are going to go full cheese I have no problem swapping a utility to sic ’em.

So ive played around now with a few weps and i find shortbow and Sword dagger to be a cool thing, and as i understand it involved condition, would it work to level with condition?

Works fine, you might want to try mixing in axe and torch at some point as well, the burning has a pretty long duration.

If you have a decent amount of experience with the combat system in this game it is really fun to take a condi set up into WvW as an uplevel, you can actually pull off some decent condi stats. People will try to gank you and you can load them up with condi’s and evade their attacks and then laugh your kitten off when you kill them.

I can make that work. Although I am a bit worried about terrormancers who just throw fear after fear at you — stab could be gone almost instantly.

Most of their fears are single target. For wvw it will not be a problem. For spvp, well they can corrupt boons anyway so it won’t make a big difference.

Rampage as one will be stronger against them since the boons reapply. Rangers might actually end up in a really good spot in sPvP. They are making a change to the way teleports work, can’t say for sure yet but it sounds like vertical porting might no longer work, which would put rangers on much more equal footing with thieves and mesmers for the roaming burst position.

What about SotW, as that’s my primary roaming source of stability on Ranger (I try to keep access to two survival skills for Survival of the Fittest and that means Lightning Reflexes and Entangle instead of RaO)?

Basically this will change nothing for frontliners in zerg v. zerg or zerg busting or raids, IMO. Guards will pop SYG, Warriors balanced stance (although this may now be changing with Dolyak Signet having only an extra 8s CD with traited stances and a bonus 5 stacks of stab), everyone rolls in with 25 stacks and that’s a lot of CC required to strip that many, especially over a period of ~10 seconds or so. Stun breakers will definitely be the new hotness, though, I think.

Any word on Ranger stability? Rampage as One, SotW?

I really don’t understand this change, thiefs get kicked in the balls again – without any compensation.

They are following the formula every mmo uses. When you introduce a new class you make it OP so people are more likely to spend money on buying it.Revenant will be a stability machine, they have a skill on a 5 second cooldown that pulses stability and a trait that gives stability on dodge roll.

Looks like it’ll be strong against power builds just like most longbow builds but it’ll still get wrecked by condi builds. All they will have to do is draw out your HS and then load you up with condi’s. Swapping to SoR would help but you don’t always get a chance to do that before getting into a fight.

I get that you want the bleed procs from warhorn but it looks like rune of the defender synergizes a lot better with GS than it does sword.

Still, it definitely looks like it could be a lot of fun. People tend to panic when you hit them with hybrid builds.

Personally I use Regen Ranger in PvP, full Settlers, 6 Nature magic and 6 Beastmastery, gains over 700hp a second, 3300 armor and plenty of protection up time.

Can you post that build? Because even with rune of the dolyak I’m only seeing 432 health per second with natural healing and compassion training giving another 177 every 3 seconds.

I’m still using the same underwater pets, love that shark. I carry a set of armor with speed runes for doing golem rushes, I stuck that on my underwater set instead of the pack runes I normally wear.

I found most people don’t bother speccing for underwater fights and with the rangers downed state we have a huge advantage anyway. Only thing I bothered doing was putting every stacking sigil I use on my underwater weapons

I get a lot more Q_Qers playing my Regen Ranger than I do playing my PewPew Ranger.

Power Ranger they have a CHANCE to win… Against a Regen Ranger theres no chance of winning 1v1. 1k HP a second, 3.3k Armor. almost 50% protection up time. That’s a lot more thrustrating than any PewPew Ranger

1k HP a sec? Is that perma regen or only while you have troll unguent up? If it’s perma I would really like to see that build because I pretty much max out at 500 before I start sacrificing all my damage.
