nor is anyone going to run a 0/20/20/0/30 build on a ranger, because those builds suck.
I run this build. Enlighten me oh great paragon of ranger wisdom, why does it suck?
Because you are doing very little damage. You’re missing out on opening strikes, alpha strikes, precise strike, hunter’s tactics, tailwind, furious grip, not to mention all the DPS increasing adept and master traits in the skirm an marks lines. It’s not a question to put 25 or 30 in skirm for dungeons unless you’re playing a highly specialized role…none of which is required afaik.
I have tailwind and furious grip, everything else is situational. I very much prefer my cooldown reduction traits. Especially loud whistle.
Edit: I also have the DPS increasing adept and master traits in the skirmishing line.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
That actually wasn’t what he said at all. He said if you aren’t going to be taking damage traits to maximize damage output, then people shouldn’t complain about not having enough damage.
He said: “nor is anyone going to run a 0/20/20/0/30 build on a ranger, because those builds suck.”
When I asked him why, he compiled a neat list of reasons. So I gave him a build that incorporates everything he considers to be optimal.
Seems to me like that’s exactly what he meant.
It seems you conveniently forgot the rest of his response again: “You can’t complain about rangers not having DPS until you actually try to DPS with them first.”
It seems you like to argue for the sake of argument. I’ve already made my point, I see no need to continue this pointlessness.
No, you’re just mad that he tore apart a build because it wasn’t optimized for damage lol but that’s okay.
I’m not mad. I know my build isn’t optimized for damage. I’ve tried builds that stack every possible damage enhancing trait. I don’t find them fun or interesting in the least. But I don’t go around proclaiming they suck either.

No Steady Focus, no Spotter, no Hunter’s Tactics, no Vigorous Spirits, and what is the 20 in Wilderness Survival even for? There’s nothing good in that line, except for maybe Natural Vigor, which only costs 5 points..
So if it isn’t a 20/25/x/20/x build it sucks. Glad we cleared that up.
You write your posts as though you are knowledgeable about the ranger class, but statements like “this build sucks” really makes you come across as whiny and childish. “I don’t like it, therefore it must suck”
-BnooMaGoo.5690
It makes it so that the huge 1200 radius ( I think that’s what it is) bubble of condi drawing is ALSO from around you, however you pull condis first and then your pet pulls them, so as long as you are within 1200 ( or w/e the radius is) of your pet your pet will end up with all the condis.
It makes that signet into what may be THE best condi removal in the game.
I’m fairly certain the radius is only 600. I wouldn’t necessarily call it the best condition removal in the game, but it has its merits I suppose.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
- Signet of Renewal (active) doesnt always work
Signet of renewal has several stipulations. Your pet must be alive, and within 600 range of you. Otherwise it will not affect you.
- Longbow #4 seems to have less range then normal LB attacks, uncertain if this is intended or not (traited LB 1500, KB shot is 1200 max)
Point Blank Shot has a range of 600 (750 traited). This is intended.

Stop asking for buffs for the greatsword. They will just take the Anet way of doing it and break the sword some clever way to make gs more viable.
I honestly wouldn’t mind if they did. The sword is such a pain in the kitten to use I wouldn’t mind seeing it go the way of the shortbow.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
2) Warrior buffs don’t stack.
Warrior banners don’t stack. But warrior shouts do. Get 4 warriors, have each one bring a different banner, then have them each also bring “for great justice” and “on my mark”. See how that scenario compares to bringing one warrior and 3 rangers. Permanent fury, near 25 stacks of might, and 25 stacks of vulnerability.
A group of rangers cannot maintain permanent fury or stack might on allies. A group of rangers can maintain a decent level of vulnerability on a target through hunter’s shot and whirling defense, though whirling defense deals sub-par damage by itself, roots the ranger, and has a longer channel than hundred blades.
A single ranger can maintain perma fury by using warhorn and a red Moa, which means 2 rangers could maintain perma fury and swiftness, so idk what you’re talking about, that also allows the warrior to free up a utility slot and leaves the rangers totally free to choose what ever utilities they want, not to mention multiple rangers, with multiple healing springs could maintain perma vigor and condi cleanse and healing allowing for more DPS faceroll.
Btw why do people assume GS is our DPS weapon? Everyone knows our DPS weapon is Sword + Torch (or hell maybe even axe now) for max dmgz sure as hell not S/D, and then if you’re in zerker gear you’d wanna take companions might giving your pet super might stacks.
Rangers still cannot stack might on allies as effectively as a warrior. The sword may outdamage our greatsword, but have you ever tried to dodge while auto attacking? I know I know, “disable the auto attack and spam 1 manually.” It doesn’t do much to mitigate the problem if the attack you need to dodge happens to come down in the middle of the kick or the leap.
And yes, I overlooked the warhorn because it’s such a forgettable weapon.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
PS: Daggers never cleave.
Unless you’re an elementalist. Argue it all you like, but I consider the elementalist’s main hand dagger to be a melee weapon.

Plot Twist: it’s a young ranger trying to train his raven
You’ll get to level 80 someday!
YOU DON’T HAVE ENOUGH BADGES TO CONTROL ME!!!
I’d find it funny if they actually made a new pet skill called “Carpet Bomb” on the birds and got rid of the swiftness boost on birds xD.
Risen eagles already do this. What did you think those poison clouds were made of?
-BnooMaGoo.5690
They swapped it with one of the worst grandmaster traits in the game.
Anet: “you’re welcome.”

Just from last swing? You know that’s a sum, right? Typical warrior attitude, no offense, but I’m at a loss to explain how many people think their channel isn’t a summation.
That doesn’t make him any less right. Warriors are the undisputed kings of PvE DPS. They also provide the best offensive support of any class.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
15k mauls lawl
So you can hit 5 digit crits by speccing 30 into marksmanship and blowing two signet cooldowns. Great, no one has ever thought of that before.
Meanwhile, back in thief land….backstabs and heartseekers for everyone!
-BnooMaGoo.5690
1) Rangers tend to hit for a lot of small packets of damage sustained for a long period of time, rather than one big one. As such, you tend to see a load of hits for 2-3k constantly, while a warrior might hit for 20k with one HB and then deal very little while it recharges. Unfortunately, even if all those small 2k numbers end up adding up to more than the one big HB + whatever damage you get from that period of reduced damage, it still looks like the warrior is dealing more, because holy kitten 20k etc.
Unfortunately, that’s not how it works. While that 20k hundred blades is cooling down, the warrior is hitting 3-4k auto attacks. So he’s still dealing more damage than you.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
So I was just browsing the forums, and here is what I discovered.
Guards are OP
Necros are OP
Thieves are OP
Mesmers are OP
Rangers are OP
Warriors are OP
Engis are OP
Eles are OP“Rangers are OP”???
Drugs are bad, m’kay….
But the rest is correct….
I’ve also discovered by browsing the forums that people tend to QQ about rangers in every class sub-forum in an off-topic fashion. I guess they don’t feel one sub-forum is enough.
That’s because there are more rangers than people. And we’re mad about getting egged in the face every time patch day rolls around.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
It’s not going to happen. GW2 is an e-sport according to the devs. PvP balance is the only balance that matters.
So yeah….don’t get your hopes up.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
every single pet pauses for about 1-3 seconds after switching
before deciding to attack the enemy targetConfirmed…why is there an aftercast on swaps?
I’m pretty sure it’s intentional. After all, anet doesn’t want us to have competent AI companions.
Over correcting to make up for how good GW1 heroes were I suppose.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
Your problem is primarily that you are playing low-level ranger, and trying to compare it to low-level warrior. Ranger starts out kind of weak because of lack of good traits to supplement their damage, while warrior tends to look very strong because a lot of their good traits can be gotten early on. A level 80 ranger, on the other hand, is a total powerhouse beast, while warriors end up being a sort of support/DPS hybrid. Both are good, but IMO rangers are better.
At this point in the meta rangers are an essential support class. Spotter is a very good group buff, as well as the traited Frost Spirit. Sword is top-notch DPS, if a bit risky to use (when coupled with the pet, ranger has some of the best DPS in the game) while greatsword remains a decent secondary option for maintaining respectable DPS if sword is getting you killed. If you like ranged weapons, on the other hand, it’s a bit ironic that ranger ranged options kinda suck.
Again, this is organized play with competent teammates who know their class. A class is pretty much exactly as good as you play it, and unfortunately a lot of rangers don’t play them well. I see more shortbow/bear rangers than I can count, which is very nearly the absolutely worst build you can run on a ranger in PvE.
Are we playing the same game? Or did I fall through a wormhole into some strange mirror universe where rangers aren’t buried 6 feet below the barrel?
-BnooMaGoo.5690
Well…this thread isn’t pointless at all.
So, how often do you rotate your tires?
I change my pets between every big fight
I’ll also votekick other rangers in teams when I see them only using Bear/Wrongbow
This doesn’t make me an elitist. The OP is right, It’s been almost a year now…. training wheels should have been off months ago…. This isn’t soccer.Bear is only for people who’s keyboards didn’t come with an F3 button and some fluke in their copy of GW2 in Options wouldn’t allow them to remap to another key.
I use a wrongbow, and it feels so right.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
The increased recharge on Counterattack (GS4) was in the patch notes but not actually implemented.
Yes I’m calling out for a nerf here, if Anet is to make the class unattractive, they might just aswell break it altogether.
They increased the recharge on Counterstrike, our spear #4. Looks like someone needs to brush up on their ranger skills.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
Well…this thread isn’t pointless at all.

-BnooMaGoo.5690
River and march drake F2 on 2+ targets is pretty much an instant 25 stack. It’s even easier since they have cleave attacks.
I’ve been doing this for months now. It’s a shame they had to nerf drakes so hard though.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
I was doing a circuit of mount maelstrom hitting holo projectors for the achievement. Unfortunately, I wasn’t finding any pirates. Then I looked at my map and noticed nodes that should have respawned, were gone. I figured someone was popping all the tampered nodes and skipping the others, but I hadn’t seen another person in hours.
It was then that I noticed a node deactivate as I approached it. It seems that some nodes will deactivate completely on their own, not spawning anything.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
I respecced after the patch, only to go back to the spec I was running previously. I did swap one of my pets, and I was forced to swap out quick draw for companion’s might, but my bow is really a secondary weapon.
Swapping my jaguar for a lynx has returned some of the single target burst I lost, and companion’s might has restored some of my drake’s AoE burst. Rending pounce hits decently hard, is a leap finisher, and has a rather long bleed attached to it. Stacking signet of the hunt and hilt bash behind a rending pounce tends to cause that first hit to land somewhere in the 4-5k range, with the second hit following up at about 2k.

If you were so good at making gold in WoW, figuring out whether or not dragon coffers are a worthy investment should be a breeze for you. Market savvy doesn’t suddenly vanish when you change markets.
Oh really? I am gonna bookmark this page then and I will be playing this game after a month (hopefully) so I can come back and quote you again. I have seen people paying as much as 50000g for a Glorious Chestplate in wow for transmog which looks totally ugly IMO and I don’t see any reason why new players or spoiled kids will not spend 100s of gold to obtain that jade skin which looks bad/good in “your” opinion.
There are two possibilities, either you have no idea or you are trying to sway people away with your comments in hopes of reducing the competition. I have dealt with your kinds (AH/TP junkies) and survived for over 5 years, however I am not here to argue and I am not gonna post anymore here until after dragon bash is over. I gave my opinion and what I think will happen, you agree with it or not its all up to you. You can’t make anything if you don’t risk anything. Do CoF p1 couple of days and be happy with it….
You brought it on by opening with “look at how rich I was in WoW.” Not to mention, you just answered your own thread.

-BnooMaGoo.5690
: (( that makes me sad.
do you still enjoy the game on a different class?
I still like my ranger, despite what anet did to it. But I’m becoming disillusioned with the game entirely at this point.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
What’s the point of PvE Content currently? I’m not talking about the people who haven’t completed their personal story yet or are still prancing around each zone studying butterflies. I’m talking about those who have reached the end game and have some goal in mind. It’s to get a good skin – either a legendary or something along the lines of Volcanus or Infinite Light.
The reason you farm world events is to get gold and mats to get better skins. How, how is that not different from a gear grind, tell me. These arguments are void – legendaries aren’t arbitrary, sure, but what else is there for us to work towards? Here, I’ll show you the options for endgame:
1) Grind WvW Ranks
2) Grind PvP Ranks
3) Grind a legendary
4) Grind any other skin
5) Grind achievements
6) Gamble in the Forge (is that even an activity?)Don’t call guild missions endgame, because they were fun when they were fresh. Now they’re boring, repetitive and everyone knows how to do each one. So you’re either “having fun”, which is such a loose term and generally doesn’t apply to a game with no purpose, or you do the above activities. So what if you don’t need to spend hours and hours grinding – if this is Arena.NET’s idea of an end game, then for committed people *that*’s the end game.
So I’ll ask again: assuming you are not a person living with the delusion that people play MMOs because they don’t have Skype, how is the current state of Guild Wars 2’s end game a different mechanic from gear grinding?
When I achieve whatever goal I set for myself, I search for a new goal. If I can’t find a new goal, I move on to another game for a while. Sometimes I just run around the world map gathering nodes and killing mobs/doing events.
Does PvE need a point?

Cacti.
Both are acceptable, see: octopus.

Pet corpses ARE exploitable in GW1 bro,
I don’t know how long it’s been since you last played GW1, but pet corpses aren’t exploitable anymore. That trick was patched out some years ago when barrage/pet groups were still popular.
I have played fairly recently and Olias seems to love turning Wilson into a bone fiend everytime he hits the floor…
When one of my pets dies, the corpse is already exploited, and no one can do anything with it. But after all the buffs to GW1 pets, I rarely see them die.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
I agree with it being put on Barrage. Seeing as they nerfed the damage 50% with the patch.. the least they could do is add a blast finisher to it.
I do feel like the damage is less than it was, but it’s nowhere near 50% less.
-BnooMaGoo.5690

Protip: you can dodge the transformation.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
While guardians are, objectively speaking, the best class in the game, the game is still good at promoting build diversity since most buffs don’t stack beyond a certain point. As such, you are better off taking “weaker” classes like the warrior or ranger simply for the team buffs they provide, rather than just stacking up on guardians and engineers.
This is exactly why the so-called “speed farm” all-warrior COF runs tend to be the slowest comps.
This post liquefied my brain.
Excuse me while I go get a mop.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
If anet makes maul a blast finisher, I wouldn’t be surprised if they reduce the duration of healing spring to 6 seconds to compensate. But hey, thieves can blast a water field 3 times in a row, and they can make their own water fields with a consumable, so what’s the harm in giving rangers a reliable blast finisher?
-BnooMaGoo.5690
Rangers would be a lot more fun if anet had given us a decent pet system to work with. Right now, pets are just a portable DoT that can be easily killed, or mitigated simply by moving.
I’ve played several pay to win Korean/Chinese MMOs that had much more involved pet systems, which made me gravitate towards the pet classes.
I know not everyone wants to be saddled with a pet, but would you mind so much if you could use that pet to buff your own stats? Or if you had complete control over all their skills and movements? Or if certain pets granted you special boons unique to that pet family?
-BnooMaGoo.5690
What I find curious, is you already had charmed the black moa before you posted this.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
The big pet nerf included one change that really got on my nerves. Marsh drakes’ F2 no longer fires behind them. It only fires directly in front of them. If your target moves even slightly to either side while it’s channeling, it will fail and go on full cooldown. I once had it fail because my drake decided to turn towards me as I pressed the button.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
Champions have a thing called “Defiance” and “Unbreakable Something”.
Defiance is a buff that has X stacks, and every Control action he receives, he loses a stack. When he’s out of stacks, he’s vulnerable to Control.
This means he’s immune to pushbacks, pulls, knockdowns and other stun-like effects until his Defiance stacks are over.
He probably charged through your Sanctuary, but he lost a Defiance stack. If he were without them, he’d be pushed back for certain.
(Edit: Also, when he takes a Control action without Defiance stacks, his stacks are reset. This is to avoid him being permanently out-of-action with the spam of these skills.)Unbreakable Something now works differently, there’s only a few monsters in the game with it, and grants total immunity against these type of Control skills.
Unshakable is the buff that gives monsters stacks of defiance when they’re hit with control skills. Some monsters have permanent stability (earth elementals) others are just immune to control skills (treants).
-BnooMaGoo.5690
Pretty much in the title. But if you can’t figure out what I’m trying to convey by that then just know that “Ranger” isn’t in reference to the word range. A ranger is a woodsman, outdoorsman, or someone who acts to protect the wild.
Just figured I’d post this. It’s annoying reading the forums and seeing people say that we should be the longest range or best range class when to justify how they think the ranger should be played.
Ranger doesn’t mean “beastmaster” either, but we’re joined at the hip to our pets.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
Subject-Alpha
There’s plenty to rally off of during a battle with alpha. Know those tendrils he spawns? You can rally off them. The essences he absorbs? You can rally off those too.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
Duel dogs! You can get two cripples, two knockdowns, a fear, and an immobilize… can’t beat that if you are a power/crit based build trying to keep your opponent’s movement minimized
Unless you’re playing PvE where the only thing that matters is bigger numbers.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
This topic is pointless and is now about waffles.
How do you like your waffles? I like mine with a bit of cinnamon and maple syrup.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
I’ll say it again. Allow pets to rally when you kill an enemy.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
It does hit twice, but because of this, and because of the ridiculously long animations on their other skills, birds have a much slower attack speed than other pets.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
