The amount of auto attack damage you lose while picking it up and using it just doesn’t seem worth the benefit.

I think it depends on what you’re auto attacking with. Using a greatsword, it’s rather easy to pick up the item and then pop it.

Still, I tried using the boar against the souped up golem boss in CoE. Since all of the golem’s attacks can be interrupted, I figured an extra stun/daze/fear would be incredibly useful. It wasn’t useful in the slightest. Even in melee range the skill is just too clunky to pull off an interrupt with, even if you leave the item on the ground until you think you might need it. The warthog’s AoE condition/combo field items are nice though.

I’ve been using a similar build in PvE. Same traits, similar gear, and a longbow instead of a shortbow. I was skeptical at first, but this build has gotten me to play my ranger again. I just love the playstyle of the ranger’s greatsword.

legendary should be account bound

that would ensure the legendary rarity and the prestige of having one

even paris hilton can have 6 legendary weapons now if she wants to even though her account might only have a lvl 2 asura with 1hr total gameplay time

Just so we’re clear, you’re one of these people who can solo Arah?

I want the spear for my ranger, if only to compliment my shark pet. But I don’t spend enough time underwater to warrant spending that much on a legendary spear. I wanted the longbow for my ranger as well, but aside from the occasional barrage, I don’t really use my longbow either.

The only legendary I would use often would probably be sunrise on my guardian, but that’s a bit cliche don’t you think?

Actually ranger core mechanic is evasion (it’s on almost every weapon). I feel pets were just sorta tacked on last minute.

Rangers don’t have a single skill that removes immobilize/cripple/chill outside of our already limited condition removal skills. We only have two stun breakers while other classes get as many as four. We only have two very situational sources of vigor.

We do have plenty of evades on our melee weapons, but out of all our ranged weapons, only the shortbow has an evade skill.

I actually can’t come up with a trait build that satisfies everything I want from my ranger.

I like when I get into zerker war groups on my Thief and I’m the only one who isn’t downed every fight in melee range. .-.

I notice that I get downed a lot but I also end up with a lot of aggro that I can’t ditch until another player can get it.

Some runs I can get through without dying. Usually there is another warrior that ends up taking that aggro and it gets shared around. If I’m the only warrior, I’ll end up with it and get downed before the thief does.

You probably are not doing enough damage to get higher on the threat list against the other warriors. You also have stealth that also helps when you have other players around to immediately get the mobs attention.

More of a building full zerker = squishy and die thing than that.

A warrior in full berserker gear has more health and armor than my ranger in knight’s gear. My ranger survives in melee just fine.

I don’t think our weapons are that much of an issue. The longbow needs some buffing, but I feel our other weapons are in a good spot.

The core problem -including our lower weapon damage- is our class mechanic being a poorly scripted AI which we have minimal control over. All of our weapons are balanced around the fact that we always have a pet tagging along to deal damage for us. Sticking us with a permanent AI companion that cannot defend itself against GW2’s dodge or die mechanics was simply a poor design decision. Why the developers are so fervently adhering to this flawed mechanic is a mystery to pretty much everyone.

The developers seem content to integrate as much of the ranger’s utility into the pet as possible. Two of our four condition removals are reliant on our pets being alive, and near enough to us to take the conditions in the first place. One of those four condition removals is a pet skill. All of our shouts only do things for our pets. All of our signet active abilities only affect our pets unless we take a grandmaster trait.

The ranger’s core mechanic should have been something radically different. Preparations, stances, spirits, traps…anything but permanent pets. I was actually thinking about stances the other day. Activating a stance would grant different abilities, perhaps boosted stats, or added effects to weapon skills. The ranger would remain in his current stance until he either changed stances, or was knocked down/launched/stunned. Changing a stance or getting hit by one of the aforementioned control skills would cause the current stance to go on cooldown. Personally, I would be much happier with my ranger if my pet and I weren’t attached at the hip. And this is coming from someone who normally gravitates to pet classes in other MMOs.

Now you might say, “Well just give me some buffs for when the pet’s stowed to make up the difference”. At this point there’s no reason to ever take the pet out, and what’s worse is that you’re now playing a class that has nothing to set it apart from any other. Bows are not Ranger-exclusive (Warrior, Thief), nor are Traps (Thief), nor are pretty light clothing.

Precisely the point of this entire post. A stowed pet would no longer be granting the ranger anything at all. All former base stat consolidation between ranger and pet would be no more, and everything originally shared with the pet would be returned to the ranger themselves. We’re wanting the ability to go completely petless if we so desire. And for rangers then being outclassed in every conceivable way by every other prof, separate topic entirely, and we’re working on that one too.

As for other profs using bows. True, but I’m sorry, we do it better. Thieves especially, while having pretty and overall very flashy arching shortbow skills, are not terribly useful with them unless perched somewhere firing down on an opponent or being used to run away quickly (all they’re really used for in WvW). Since all other thief shortbow skills are easily sidestep-able.

We -aren’t- outclass -you- and all the other rangers that don’t know how to manage their pets are being outclassed.

And you want the pet to give you the stats you share with it back? Fine, that’d be the equivalent of how you are now since we don’t share a single thing with our pet atm, the pet has its own stats entirely.

PS: I don’t think you’ve actually used or fought against a good shortbow thief if you think all their skills are easily sidestep able and/or useless

LOL, I would love to see a video of a “pro” ranger using his pet in a high lvl fractal.
Please link one since theres sooo many that have no problems whatsoever with the pet.
Better yet why dont you post one for us so we can see how a pet is supposed to be managed in a fractal.
Thankyou in advance

P.S. The pets are garbage in this game and giving some the option of having one or not needs to be done.

Um, really? Fractals? -that’s- what you’re complaining about? The only reason our pets are issues in high fractals is from them having 0 agony resist, take off your ascended armor and tell me how well you’d last there, what? The same duration? Imagine that….

Once they fix pets so they gain their masters Agony Resistance they won’t be an issue there.

Any of my pets except bears die to a single dredge bomber in a matter of seconds in level 10 fractals. Agony isn’t the only issue. Even if it was, there’s still this issue where the jade maw loves to target pets with its eye laser of death.

Pets are nothing but a target against the jade maw, and they can’t even pick up a crystal. All they do is make the fight take longer than it should.

Mesmer clones take more JM aggro than ranger pets…I mean, if you’re only level 10 FOTM and you’re struggling, well, it’s because you’re level 10 FOTM and you’re not good at it yet. There are people level 71+ playing ranger on FOTM. They’re not on here complaining…they’re out there dominating PvE.

I never said anything about struggling at level 10. I said that pets struggle at level 10. even if they had agony resistance. As for mesmer clones taking more aggro from the maw, that’s not true. Mesmer clones are optional, ranger pets are not.

Also, if rangers are playing around in level 71 fractals, they are not using their pets for much of anything.

I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again. Pets should have never been designed as the ranger’s core mechanic. Pets work fine in some MMOs, but those MMOs have static tank ‘n spank gameplay. With the dodge or die mechanics which run rampant in GW2, NPC allies that cannot dodge just don’t work.

I would have been fine with ranger pets if they were utility skills, like necromancer minions. I probably would have never used them, but I wouldn’t take issue with them.

If you’re having problems running from the waypoint to the boss, maybe the solution is to kill that trash so it doesn’t kill you all day? maybe? no?.

I played all the paths since the changes. They seem slightly more difficult but it’s all still fine. I had a problem where the ghost eater bugged out and didn’t spawn at all, but that’s probably fixed by now.

The funniest thing in MMOs is how people try to overcome difficulty by exploiting, and when exploiting is fixed the forums become filled with complaints.
Gaming revolves around improving your skill to overcome difficulties; if you suck, you don’t do fract46 with exploits, but train on 10 until you’re good enough.

Spamming level 10 fractals is not going to prepare you for a level 46 fractal. I can run level 10 fractals in my sleep, but I wouldn’t dare set foot in a level 46, even if I had the appropriate AR.

We tried giving them reduced damage from AOE/attacks, and it opened up other problems – mainly that a team of 2 rangers could take on almost any boss in a dungeon by smart swapping of pets and letting the pet take aggro.

This sounds more like an issue with dungeon mechanics than with pets themselves. Most dungeon bosses are just fat sacks of HP that deal a lot of damage. There’s nothing stopping a team of two [insert class here] from taking down most dungeon bosses.

I would like to see more bosses that require some simple team coordination, like the evolved destroyer in the crucible of eternity. Something that requires at least 3 people, but can still be done with less than 5 if necessary.

Unlike GW2 where your actions will actually matter. If you ignore that event, the bandits will burn down that town and they will kidnap the townsfolk. Then you get a whole new event to put out those fires and save them.

None of this happens. Bandits may attack a farm. If you fail the event to repel them, guess what they do. They stand around doing nothing until someone comes along and clears them out. Then the whole thing repeats 30 minutes later.

It’s a step in the right direction, but nothing you do has any impact on the game whatsoever.

Traditional Quest

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Quarktastic.1027

Quarktastic.1027

I really hope not. The traditional questing system is so outdated and stale. Plus it goes against the whole “grind to level” philosophy.

With a traditional questing system, you get quest after quest telling you to constantly go kill 10 boars, go kill 10 wolves, go kill 10 orcs, etc etc. You pick up a quest, run out to the area, stand there and kill 10 of each, then run back to the NPC for your reward and get the next quest that makes you do the same thing again. It’s a back and forth grind that is outdated and stale.

This new system is perfect. No more running back and forth, no more grinding so many mobs over and over, and more choices on how you want to level up. And it is all actually happening as well. There is no, “Oh no! We are being attacked! Kill 10 pigs!” and all the pigs are sitting in a field doing nothing but grazing. Now instead we got mobs actually attacking instead of doing nothing in events.

It would be a downgrade to bring in an outdated quest system with what we have now.

Do they have cake in that little fantasy world of yours?

Anet didn’t do anything intuitive with their new “event” systems. All they did was remove the quest NPCs. You’re still killing X of Y, you just don’t have to talk to any NPCs along the way.

Just ease the dredge fractal and i don’t care. and just to add to the " dirt cheap" tactics comment….i’m a thief. there’s nothing a kit could do a thief couldn’t to bypass anything in a dungeon. I feel this stupid kit has caused unnecessary aggro towards stealth that wouldn’t have existed and now hurting the thief class. we have the lowest hp pool in the game and need to rely on rolling, evades, and stealth to accomplish what a stupid tank can do just standing. stupid as in outburst of anger, nothing against the class. the other classes using thief stealth is just them joining in the fun, their stealth should get nerfed like the cross hairs buff when you get pulled out of stealth or something. it makes our stealth pointless now when we are about to die, last one up, the mobs chased us there and we know we are doomed because they just stand there waiting to kill us. what the eff is the point of stealth then. we turning this into metal gear solid where they can hear our footsteps and smell us? change our base health pool and or resistances and then i’ll stop complaining. this invisi change is unbalancing the equation. for the record, i was against the ash legion spy kits. put the thief on controls in the cage and whatever. also takes the hatred on “stupid squishy thief” away. the class gets enough negative feelings from the rest. I have to use soldier gear and fighter runes with 20 into toughness traitline to do my daily 28 and above. I don’t see how a thief can do it otherwise.

Don’t you know? The thief class was designed solely to troll people in wvw/pvp. You’re not supposed to be any good in pve. Besides…something tells me you’ve never played a ranger.

Pet dodge when the Ranger dodges? Who really thinks that is a good idea?

I sure as hell do not want to be the only class forced to blow their stamina due to stupid pet AI or their inability to not get destroyed by anything and everything that isn’t a singular white level 80 mob in the open world. Okay, I exaggerate (only a bit, mind you), but my point stands.

That has to be one of the dumbest suggestions I’ve ever heard (no offense to anyone), and I can’t even believe more than one single person thinks that it is a good idea.

If you don’t mean to give offense, than don’t say things that can easily be taken with offense. Just because the idea wouldn’t solve the problem, doesn’t mean it can’t be a springboard for other ideas.
“A way to make pets dodge would be good” is what I took away from it. What if a button existed that could make your pet dodge roll, or gave it evasion for a few frames (no animation!) It could be called the “Dodge!” button, and every time I used it I could make a DBZ Abridged joke to my mates on TS.

But that doesn’t solve the problem. It’s a cool thought that I can bring up with folks, but wouldn’t solve the problem of pets in dungeons while possibly adversely affecting PvP. Making the numbers bigger doesn’t work either (trust me, we’ve tried)

I kind of see an issue with a “make pet dodge” button, in that it would give rangers two dodge keys to keep track of instead of one. I can see where it would be difficult to increase a pet’s survivability without overly complicating things.

Sword is only used by experienced rangers, which are a rare breed. Most people dont stick with the prof to appreciate having 2 evades on a low cd in addition to a disengage. 90% of sword users dont even bother to disable the autoattack.

Funny thing about auto attacks. They’re where most of a weapon’s damage comes from. You’re severely hampering your own damage output by disabling the auto attack just so you can choose when you want to root yourself.

I can sort of see a reasoning behind disabling the greatsword’s auto attack, since the evade on the third hit is so useful, and maul should be spammed for damage as often as possible. But in the case of the one handed sword, the only attack you want to be spamming for damage is the auto attack.

Its where most of the damage comes from if you’re Power/Crit based

If not, its not really super amazing damage

I said where most of the weapon’s damage comes from not where most of the ranger’s damage comes from. Yes, you lose less damage if you’re running a bunker or condition based build, but you’re still losing potential damage. It should never be necessary to gimp your own damage just to “fix” a problem that is inherent to your weapon.

The sword’s auto attack chain needs to be addressed. If it worked properly, the sword would easily be the ranger’s best main hand weapon.

I don’t see you coming up with any brilliant ideas. If you don’t have something constructive to say, don’t post.

On topic: I don’t feel like it would be too difficult to give pets a passive buff in dungeons that reduced the damage they take, say, by 33%. It would only be applied in dungeons and fractals, meaning it wouldn’t affect pets in pvp or the open world.

I would also like to see the ranger’s stats being shared with pets, or something similar. Perhaps a rework of the beast mastery trait line.

Where are all the sword rangers?

Quarktastic.1027

The only time I have ever used a one handed sword seriously was against subject alpha. Being able to dodge his AoE with weapon skills is quite nice. However, once your 2 (3 with a dagger offhand) dodges are up, and alpha drops an AoE in the middle of your auto chain, you’re kittened. This wouldn’t happen if you could simply cancel the sword auto with a dodge roll. But you can’t. There, I said it.

Make Pets Invul while Player is dodging

in Ranger

Posted by: Quarktastic.1027

Quarktastic.1027

Guys just ignore anything that Chopps says. He is a known troll/fanboy who tells everyone that they are not doing it right and refuses to acknowledge the horrible shortcomings of the ranger pet. Invunerable pets while dodging would make sense, and take away their ability to attack during this time. That would make it so they are not totally useless in massive AoE fights. However, I hate the idea of dodging just so my pet wont get BBQed, but that is the flip side of this coin.

BTW Chopps, I am still waiting on the video of you doing Subject Alpha P2 or 3 and keeping your pet alive the whole time. That way when you either let your pet die or do absolutley nothing but keep your pet alive the whole time, I and others can point out what a horrible failure it is.

The thing about subject alpha is: His AoE works like a player’s AoE. It hits a maximum of 5 targets, and prioritizes players over NPCs. So as long as everyone is stacked like they’re supposed to be, you don’t actually need to do anything special to keep your pet alive. So yeah, Chopps isn’t as pro as he seems to think. Now, if he were to post a video of his ranger soloing subject alpha, while keeping his pet alive the entire time, I would eat my words with a spoon.

The Pearl is better because it’s got the same stats and isn’t stupidly overpriced.

But it’s not on fire.

darkmoon shield = shield of the moon
trusty rusty = pirate cutlass
so far every item you posted aswell is just a reskin and are just diff names.
not so rare
the only rare item you mentioned is final rest

As far as I’m aware, Wings of Dwayna and the Reaper of Souls are not reskins of anything. I’ve seen an NPC wielding Wings of Dwayna, but I’ve never heard of someone finding it.

Wings of Dwayna looks like The Lover.

No, Feathers of Dwayna (shortbow) looks like The Lover. Wings of Dwayna is unique.

For the record, if Whirling Defense hits 12 times and the final number is 9.9k then each hit was only 825.

You also better hope your opponent doesn’t decide to move two steps to the side or back since you really have no way to lock them down for the duration and you can’t move. (Entangle might work but that’s only maybe)

Do you believe and support that whirling defense, needs a buff, and if it did, would become EXTREMELY viable? Buff as in, moveable, channeled but not interuppted if hit, etc..

All it really needs is the ability to move, or give the ranger some way to lock people down more easily.

It’s actually strange to me that ranger is the only profession with a “spin to win” that can’t move while doing it.

I think it’s because they don’t actually spin. They just kind of flail their arms wildly as if swatting mosquitoes.

But yes, being able to move while channeling whirling defense is something that needs to happen. The same is true for barrage.

I’m sighing because exploitable issues I noticed like 8 months ago… that got fixed… are now resurfacing and people are making threads about them and saying that if they get removed it will be a nerf.

Rangers have so little going for them at this point, that most bug/exploit fixes are nerfs.

final rest was dropped before the new patch, and people who found it said loud and clear that it was a shadow behemot item. but nobody believed because all of them kept it or exchanged for other weapon, for example an ex guildie said it had it and exchanged it for the crossing during halloween.

but no, we have to think the worst of all people

Prior to the Feb. 26th update, There was not a single screenshot or video of anyone finding, or wielding final rest. It’s possible that someone found one and didn’t know what they had, but there is no proof. “I know a guy, who knows a guy who found that staff” does not equal proof.

Pets dodge when you dodge

in Ranger

Quarktastic.1027

And @Aridia, not only does that solution not make sense, it’d be horribly broken as well to be able to make your pet teleport at any given moment.

Reread my post. You never addressed as to why you should waste a dodge on the pet.

Every player has 2 dodges. So you want to use your dodge so that your pet will evade? No thanks. Not everyone is melee. Just because the attack will hit the pet doesn’t mean it’ll hit the player.

Rangers have far more than 2 dodges.

My Ele is being shelved till this is fixed, it’s just too horrible to play with.

I zoom out to max distance when playing. Still it bugs me knowing the problems are there. And I also tend to zoom in inbetween just to watch my character (e.g. when waiting for a map boss).

The destroyed armor – adding up with some game breaking bugs they introduced with the last patch – reduces my motivation to play to 0.

Yup. I really don’t like logging in to be greeted by my rubbery armor. I think it’s best if anet just rolls back these armor “fixes” until they can figure out a better solution.

Quick note, I don’t mind that my shoulders have shrunk, but the rubber helm is unforgivable.

how much toughness/vitality is enough?

in Guardian

Posted by: Quarktastic.1027

Quarktastic.1027

In Fractals is all about damage and Agony resistance, so i would suggest you go full berserker/dps and have around 2400 toughness and at least 13-14k hp to avoid one-shots early on.

At later levels 30+ nothing matters except for damage and dodging.

This mentality only exists because higher level fractals will kill you regardless of how much toughness/vitality you stack.

Outside of fractals, toughness and vitality can very much improve your staying power. Carrying the “lol dps” mentality into WvW will likely get you killed. Repeatedly.

Considering it takes approx two minutes to kill a golem naked in the mist, with purple weapons, i can just say that you aint doing the same test.

Clear the traits, you cant use the same traits for those weapons, they benefit very different from different traits. My argument was btw untraited.

I used the same trait and gear setup that I use in pve. Why didn’t I do it naked with no traits? Because I don’t play pve naked with no traits. And yes, the same traits can be used with both weapons. I use both weapons with the same build, often swapping between them for the same content.

I havent said you do things faster with animationskipping. What i say is that you can cut some of the animation in the third or second step and stay stationary for a shorter period of time and thus reducing exposure to incoming damage.

Every hit of the hammer’s auto attack chain can be cast while moving, so I’m not sure what you mean by this.

Damage aside, I love having a blast finisher on a 4 sec CD. In coordinated team play, especially WvW, where a combo field is available, hammer is absolutely amazing.

I don’t know about WvW, but I do like blast finishers. I don’t find it very necessary in dungeons though. Especially when there aren’t many allies near me to benefit from the AoE goodness. That said, the greatsword has both a leap and two whirl finishers, which both have their own uses. For instance, the new fire aura is extremely awesome. The hammer’s AoE frost aura would be even more awesome, but I notice people rarely use frost fields.

May i suggest that you go to the mist.

I did. Here’s what I found.

Using the same trait build for both weapons. No traits used were specific to either weapon, virtue of justice was not activated, (which in your mind puts the hammer at an advantage) and no sigils were used.

Over an average of 4 kills per weapon:
*Hammer: 41.78 seconds
*Greatsword: 22.58 seconds

Care to explain?

Edit: I used to think the hammer dealt more damage too. But ever since I picked up a greatsword, I’m killing things far faster. And in my experience with using animation skipping, the animation does get sped up, but the skill itself takes the same amount of time to activate. I believe it to be a graphical glitch.

Why should people choose ranger?

in Ranger

i suppose its a fun class, very nice while leveling and in open pve content.
Good in spvp, ok-ish to dead meat in wvw depending on the size of the group

All the issues are hard to perceive until you’re trying to run high end pve like arah/fractals etc

Exactly this. Open world PvE is fine and leveling is fine. But once you get into tougher group content where you depend on your party more, the problems start to really show themselves.

Mostly in the area of pets. When your pet dies in 1-2 hits from a dungeon boss, you’re going to lose some or all of that pets damage, no matter how well you micromanage it. Micromanaging pets is an extreme chore, and -since pets can’t manage themselves- a necessary evil.

So much wrong in this thread. Hammers do not deal more DPS than greatswords, traited or not. Animation skipping has never sped up the hammer’s auto attack chain, and since they fixed dodge cancelling in a recent update, animation skipping is no longer possible anyway.

The hammer is still useful. It’s an extremely defensive weapon with its control skills and high protection uptime.
