Again, you’re trying to beat Rock with Scissors there. The elaboration about how Scissors gets utterly demolished by Rock is not the most compelling of arguments. This reminds me of those Rangers and Thieves unloading all their projectiles into Walls of Reflection and Feedbacks then complaining about how those reflect skills are so imba because they always result in that player’s death.

The entire point of retaliation, is to punish volume of attacks, and it does this very well. The problem is that some classes don’t necessarily have easy access to hard hitting attacks that aren’t multi hit attacks. Basically a Ranger fighting at range only has Scissors to fight against Rock. You shouldn’t be calling for Rock to be nerfed, you should be asking for more options of bringing your own Paper to the challenge. Alternatively just bring Paper next time when you know your opponent is going to be playing Rock again.

tl;dr: Retaliation doesn’t need a nerf, but Rangers could certainty use buffs and more options.

Retaliation is a broken mechanic in that it deals fixed damage. It doesn’t punish you for damaging your opponent. It punishes you for hitting your opponent. The more you hit them, the more damage you take.

Retaliation is a hard counter to persistent AoE skills, and persistent AoE skills are the only counter to zerg warfare.

With high might stacks, considering my sword auto in full berserker without might don’t go above 1.7k crits.
Stop exaggerating your use, my pvt guardian with ruby orbs can get those auto crits with barely any might on and bring a ton of boons and condi cleanse and CC to boot.

We get it, you hate rangers and everything that isn’t berserker gear/ruby orbs/scholar runes.

And you’re doing something wrong if you aren’t hitting above 2k in full berserker gear. Either that or you’re hitting something with protection up.

also, 3k auto crits on a PVT guardian? Who’s exaggerating now?

They state they wiped 4x just in the making of the video, T2.
That’s complete bullkitten.
So if someone who doesn’t have ‘Veteran’ status in the game (i.e. Time long enough to have fully decked in Ascended with LEGENDARY weapons….

The fact that they failed 4 times making the video just means they are either bad players, or lacked coordination. Or both. Gear != skill.

And yes, they are negligible benefits. Takes 10 extra seconds to rename your pet when you switch.

I have never played another game where pet names aren’t stored in some fashion. Stop defending lazy design choices. It’s 2013, figuring out how to store simple text data shouldn’t be even remotely impossible.

Quarktastic, the test WAS done in combat. Nobody got the icon for the boost, and I know that my own personal numbers weren’t boosted. This says that 1) the ranger using the trait isn’t a priority target for it, and 2) at least sometimes, it does nothing at all for anyone.

Mine always works 100% of the time. Unless there are more than 5 people around. But then it still works, just not always on me.

another “easy” fix, is to give rangers protection for the duration of the entire barrage. Sure it IS a powerful boon. And it will last a long time. But the price we pay when rooting ourselves in order to hit a large group of players heavily outweighs the gain.

I don’t think protection reduces retaliation damage.

I frequently screw up my hunter’s shot stealth because of this. I’ll drop a barrage, then realize I need to get out of dodge, so I try to stealth…and immediately fail.

The truly spooky bit? I’m not entirely sure that the ranger with the trait himself has any priority. I’ve had the icon missing from my own boon bar while in combat, then come back at the next engagement.

This part is very true. It’s also true for spirit buffs, banners, and any other passive buff in general. Far too many times I’ve dropped a frost spirit in the middle of a zerg rush meta event and never once saw any benefit from it. And yes, it survived for its entire duration.

At the very least, these buffs should be given priority to the players that generate them. This priority should also extend to party members.

Ranger + Party = Kick?

in Ranger

Quarktastic.1027

I tried to give my ranger a chance, and even gave her ARAH gear, however….

Playing Ranger feels like bashing my head up against a wall. EVERYTHING I do feels inferior to every other class (speaking from experience of playing everything else…)

1h Sword feels uncomfortable for PvE, and our overall damage is just too little. We don’t have any decent support, and the little support we do have (Spotter+Spirit of Frost)

The pet damage nerf was worst of all. My panther does not deal much more damage than my bear.

The one handed sword is a bit awkward to use, but its shortcomings can be overcome. Though I dislike using the sword, it isn’t because of the awkward auto attack. I dislike the sword because it lacks a reliable gap closer. And I’m aware of the “about face hornet’s sting trick,” I just find it hectic to use in the middle of combat.

The pet damage nerf wasn’t as severe as you think. Cats still deal more DPS than bears. If you want a cat that can still burst, perhaps you should try a lynx instead of a jaguar. With spotter and fury, your lynx will have near 100% crit, and have a bursty F2 skill to compliment that.

The problem isn’t the class and has never been the class, the problem is with players.
There are several people such as Brazil and Chopps that have shown that when played well, ranger can be amazing.

No, Chopps hasn’t demonstrated this at all.

I used to think Chopps was a bit crazy with his fervent defense of the ranger profession. Then I tried one of his builds -Using my weapons of choice rather than his. Well, I like it. It works quite well in PvE. I’ve even had a few groups call me “the best ranger they’ve ever seen.”

Ancient history. Compared to Thaumanova, a largely unexplained event that rivals the rise of Kralkattorik for significance in recent history. What? Why? How?

We all know the story of Abbadon, and most importantly, we all know the full extent of it’s results and significance. Also, chaos magic could potentially be used to create temporal magitech for use in living story.

Thaumanova does not remotely compare to the rise of an elder dragon. Have you not seen the Brand? Kralkattorik created that massive swath of destruction by breathing on the ground. Who knows what he did to the crystal desert. Thaumanova broke reality and such, but only within the walls of the reactor itself.

Also, the infinity ball already opens portals to the future, so there.

Would all that stack? because depending on the build that could be a constant 25 bleeds all the time.

Sigils of earth and geomancy share a cooldown. So while sigil of geomancy is cooling down, sigil of earth does nothing.

The fight between the gods that ArenaNet talks about is the very first fight, when they banished Abaddon to the Relam of Torment.

I got some questions I want answers for.

- WoodenPotatoes in his video said that there was one god Abaddon defeated before himself got defeated, what god was that?

- About the five gods that fought Abaddon, was Grenth one of the gods amongst them, or was it Dhuum that helped the gods to banish Abaddon?

- Where in the Crystal Seas did the fight happen? Was it on an island, or over open seas?

- How did the Margonites look like before they got banished with Abaddon down into the Realm of Torment. They were Humans during that time.

- The very reason why Abaddon started a war between the gods was because they wanted to take the magic away from the humans, while Abaddon wanted the humans to keep the magic, why was Abaddon’s feelings so strong to this that he started that war?

-I’m not sure about this.

-I believe Grenth defeated Dhuum before the gods brought humans to tyria. Abaddon wasn’t defeated until after his decision to grant magic to the humans. Since we see statues of Grenth -not Dhuum- in Orr, leads one to believe that Grenth was among the gods who defeated Abaddon.

-The battle was so intense, it transformed the entire Crystal Sea into desert. It’s likely the battle took place over the entirety of the sea, with gods fighting in the heavens, and margonites/human armies waging naval battles across its surface.

-Margonites were ordinary humans before getting banished to the realm of torment with their god. So they probably looked like other ordinary humans.

-The gods didn’t want to take magic away from the humans, possibly because they couldn’t. But they did want to limit its use by sealing it away in the bloodstones, thus preventing any single human from possessing all schools of magic. Abaddon and his followers believed that magic should continue to flow freely. Perhaps Abaddon felt that the other gods were punishing him by limiting his gift to the humans.

Then answer me some questions, because i do not know what happened:
-Where did the battle take place?

Over the crystal sea, now the crystal desert.

-Were all the gods fighting, even Dwayna? Then how did she contribute to the battle? Healing other gods or..?
-How was he defeated? A hammer blow, a godly spell or something else? Maybe Abaddon’s predecessor came back somehow for a final stand and sacrificed himself?

Mortals cannot even lay eyes on the gods without going blind. How could they possibly comprehend how gods fight? Dwayna doesn’t just heal. She is the goddess of air and lightning as well.

-Which army fought the margonites? Forgotten only, or Orrians too?
-Did all orrians opposed Abaddon?
These are just some questions.

The followers of the other 5 gods are the ones who fought the margonites.

We know where the reactor explosion happened, we’ve been there 99999 times, we know it was the inquest who caused the explosion.

I would also like to know more about the reactor, but not at this cost.

We actually have no idea what caused the explosion. The reactor was an inquest lab to begin with, as they were experimenting with dragon energies. Think of it as Infinity Coil 1.0. Rumors have been circulating around Rata Sum that it was destroyers that caused the explosion.

and ……

2. Kill 50 enemies to get the gold award. (which you seem to forget to do on your “perfect run”)

So .. yay for finishing tier 4, but you can pull perfect from the title of the thread.

You want a tier 1 DPS build for cof? Here ya go—no longbow! You don’t need longbow here, at all. This is basically what I do in fractals 48 and it’s huge DPS. It’s permanent 25 might stacks on pet. It’s sick.

20 (spotter) / 30 (companion’s might) / 0 / 20 (vigorous spirit/strength of spirit)/ 0

Sword/warhorn and axe/axe with sigils of perception and strength.

Full berserker

Quickening zephyr / frost spirit / optional

Stalker / optional (gap filler pet)

See the thread Mighty Ranger High Level FOTM for more details.

Lol! And rangers wonder why they cannot get into dungeon parties and/or get kicked…

Chopps, you make it out like fractals is the only dungeon in this game, Thankfully it’s not, because I have no interest in fractals. Furthermore, you would never get into my dungeon party with your set-up,

High level fractals are some of the most challenging content in the game, if not the most challenging. If his build works there, it will work in any dungeon.

You can then stealth, then regain opening strike with the Remorseless Trait, apply 5 more stacks of vulnerability + 5 more from your pet.

Remorseless only reapplies opening strike to the ranger, not to the pet. I tested it in the mists just to be sure.

sorry, I made a mistake. Remorseless doesn’t reapply Opening Strike for your Pet when you gain stealth, because only you gain stealth. But I Know it works for when you kill an enemy. Sry for the mix up. But thats still 5 more stacks of might than you would of had with the old setup.

It’s a shame that these new armor pieces only look good on humans. But that can be said about most of the armors in GW2.

No wonder I never knew about this, I was never drunk enough to take 3 rangers in a dungeon party. -_-

So…three rangers walk into a dungeon….

I play a Mesmsr, so I pull people. I don’t need to see them to pull them. I have pulled them since BWE2, from both the Arena and the Well.

You still need to see the spot where you plan to place your curtain. Kind of difficult to do while wading through AoE from 5+ players.

as long as you can use stealth to bypass that point its ok the hardest is the arena but given you can still have your stealth(you will have a nightmare in the darkroom into you learn it perfectly) and do that stealthed to so stealth from the start to end is possible with the exeption of getting to the first stealth

The problem is, that players will AoE the well regardless of whether they see anyone coming or not. Soon as you get hit by an AoE, you lose any advantage that stealth gave you.

Get a Guardian. Provide AoE stability. Throw down Reflection Walls. Use Pulls. ??? Profit.

Now try doing that from the bottom of the well. It’s virtually impossible to target someone at the top, much less pull them over the side. Reflection and stability do help, but depending on the composition of classes at the top, you can expect to lose 60% or more of your force trying to reach a position where you can even hit the opposition.

One guardian can grant 18s of stability without boon duration. This is provided in an AoE.

And everyone who wants that much stability has to stand in a very obvious circle. Which will no doubt get carpet bombed by AoE team at the top of the well.

There’s no two ways about it. The well grants an obvious and extreme advantage to whomever controls the top. I’ve seen a group outnumbered 3 to 1, successfully hold control over the well for over an hour.

The whole point is you PREP before going into the fray. Don’t just stand there prepping in a spot you can get hit (and if you do choose to do that, do it with reflects like Shield of the Avenger, Summon D-Series Defensive Golem, Feedback, Wall of Reflection, Shield of Absorbtion, the list goes on.

I get the feeling that you’ve never tried to retake the well from another server. It’s virtually impossible to target or attack players at the top unless you’re near the top yourself. Meanwhile, a player at the top has a clear view, and can throw their attacks nearly all the way to the bottom. And even if they can’t see you, they know the well is the only route you can take, so they will tirelessly cycle through their AoEs and hit anything that makes an attempt to climb the well.

The arena is a similar beast. You have a clear view of your opponents, but they have complete control. The control the cages, and they can keep you in combat, making it nearly impossible to reach them. You have to jump, they don’t. A lot of the jumps in the arena cannot be made in combat without swiftness, and if you get crippled or chilled in the middle of a jump, you get to start over.

These areas are prime locations for servers to troll each other. The server that controls these areas can attack without discretion; without fear of retaliation. This is not PvP, it’s a troll fest.

If you’re going to sell Zap you might want to do it sooner than later as Anet intends to make precursors easier to get this year (how much easier I do not know).

Probably about as easy as buying 300-400g worth of mats off the trading post and flushing them down the mystic toilet.
