The biggest difference is that world events have a guaranteed rare. These are mostly masterwork and a couple of silvers at best and some karma(still not sure why they keep giving more karma without adding anything to spend the karma on).

The smarter move would be making non-event related champions scale(perhaps unlimited scaling or just … gorilla scaling). Champions would still be worth killing but zerging would not be the best choice. In a way PvE has acquired the same problem as WvW …

Knowing anet, they would break it. Like when they first introduced this zerg counter scaling to certain events.

Remember the champion wraith at penitent camp? How it had an AoE life siphon that covered the whole camp and dealt somewhere around 30k damage per second? It also completely refilled his health bar.

Yeah, that tended to happen if more than 10 people showed up to do the event.

Anet doesn’t learn, they did the exact same thing with World events added a lovely reward for them but it was the ONLY PLACE PLAYERS GOT THEM, so they hammered them till they got nerfed..
The same thing here Champions are the only place to receive these rewards so they are getting hammered 24/7, don’t nerf them add more places to get nice things and players will alternate to other areas..

Its not rocket science.

Every skin that these bosses drop will cost less than 10g in under a month’s time. Remember what happened with final rest? Same deal, only it will happen faster.

There are more champions in this game than you might think. So it’ll force you to spread out a bit. Go run some dungeons. Did you know thy also have champions? And they give out a fancy daily reward all their own.

now please tell me the reason to waste time in a dungeon killing what? couple of champs when i can farm 6 in frostgorge in about 5 minutes or less… Dungeons are irrelevant and are only here for ‘fun’, when you’ve done hundreds of runs in the passed 11 months the fun part isn’t there anymore.

And just what are you doing farming loot bags from the same 6 champions all day? If that is your idea of fun I suggest looking for another game. I hear WoW has lots of phat lootz to spend all day grinding for.

i farm 2-3h a day, far from all day like some are. You’re the only one who cares what happens in WoW. Its not even “fun”, its kinda braindead to say the truth but getting a skin worth 200g is kinda cool in a game where farming is not allowed

You’re mindlessly farming for shinies in a game that wasn’t designed for farming. What are you going to use that 200g for after you sell that weapon? Another legendary? Another set of exotic armor? None of it really matters in the long run.

I don’t farm, I don’t grind. I have over 700g and nothing worth buying to spend it on.

When you have to perfectly follow a virtual script to defeat an encounter, well, that kind of game play exists for games that fill that niche, but it’s horrendous MMO content design.

I can imagine certain motivations for this, but none of them include “for the good of GW2”.

All games are scripted with specific things you have to do to overcome encounters. That’s how games work. There are games that can give you multiple options of how to deal with the encounter, but it is always scripted and you will always have to do something that’s programmed into the game. There is no way around it.

And this encounter doesn’t give you multiple avenues to overcome. Throw 3 orbs>circle strafe/dodge/block to avoid the darkfalls and visions>kill rifts as they appear. It’s extremely rigid and everything spawning in the exact same spot every time doesn’t help.

Liadri was not a well designed encounter.

Stability counters pulls from the orbs. Skills that block or give you invulnerability counters the darkfalls. Swiftness helps you kite the visions around more easily. There are plenty of avenues to counter pieces of the fight. That doesn’t mean you should be able to avoid what the intended mechanics are at all times, though.

How would you have rather them designed the encounters? Better camera, sure. Have it not be timed? Okay. But what else would you have them do?

I would have lessened the environmental effects, and given more to the boss herself. Perhaps instead of clones spawning in the exact same locations every time, make Liadri herself split into different “visions” with different effects. Hitting the real Liadri with an orb of light would dispell the other visions. While hitting the visions would make them vulnerable to Liadri’s own darkfalls.

Perhaps the darkfalls could be more infrequent, but randomized.

All in all, this fight could have been improved. But I am neither a designer nor developer, and this entire post has been something that I thought up in 30 seconds.

Anet, PLEASE do not make this a trend. I quit WoW years ago when they started neutering classes by making unique class abilities available to everyone. Portal entre was a large part of the reason why I made a mesmer in the first place… to help my jumping-challenged friends reach places that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to go. You have just made the effort I put into levelling that character worthless. Who were the heroes of Southsun? Mesmers. Everyone wanted a Mesmer as a friend. …Sorry, Mesmers, nobody needs you anymore.

Only if everyone is content to pay 5 gold or more to put down two portals. The portal device is so stupidly expensive to craft that it’s cheaper in the long run to just make a mesmer.

Wonderful. So cheapening this profession is a pun as well.

Now you’re just complaining for the sake of complaining.

The recipes are worthless for a reason. It’s because no one wants to craft the product.

This doesn’t make any sense to me. I think in the vast majority of raid fights I have been in, the environment has also been utilized to add complexity to the fight. I don’t understand why a boss’s mechanics should all generate from the boss itself.

Except that 99% of the challenge comes from the environment. Environmental effects are fine. Bosses that cause environmental effects are also fine. Liadri wouldn’t be even the tiniest kittenallenging if not for the effects that surround her.

Liandra is causing the environmental effects. Sure you can’t stop them from happening, but that hardly means she isn’t causing them, nor that the mechanics of the fight are somehow weakened.

But the environmental effects shouldn’t be the only thing that makes the boss challenging. You should feel threatened by the boss, as well as the environment. Liadri herself is just a health bar you have to burn down before time runs out or you get instakilled by one of her environmental effects.

Yes and I have complained about the Sci-Fi Asura as well as the Steampunk Charr/Dredge.

This isn’t the Guild Wars that I knew and loved. ArenaNet may as well remove all melee weapons and replace them with blaster rifles. Mesmers could use holography rather than magic. It’s so sad.

And those dragons, as it turns out, are mechanical and filled with Asura. They would have gotten away with it too if it weren’t for those meddling kids and their crazy dog.

I don’t suppose you visited Rata Sum in GW1 either. GW1 asura already had robots and stargates. Where did you expect them to go from there? Bows and arrows? Dolyak drawn wagons?

I’ve posted numerous times about the bowstring. I’ve even made suggestions on how to improve it. I’ve even commented on the lack of a barrage animation. But the developers seem to have no plans to make further visual changes to current legendary weapons.

Legendary weapons should be of the best visual quality, considering the significant investment required to obtain. Copy/pasting the same string texture onto every bow because “bows need strings” is a silly and unprofessional looking notion.

Am I proud that I defeated her? Yes.

Do I wish the fight was more about the boss and less about fighting environmental effects? Yes.

Disagree. The “environment” is a direct form of attack from the boss herself. Everything you are competing against is the boss.

If the entire fight was focused around her person alone, she’d probably end up with Defiant stacks. I like the back-and-forth nature of this kind of fight.

The boss doesn’t cast these attacks, nor does she directly summon the clones. Where does one draw the line between “boss mechanic” and “environmental effect?”

Nono Quark, if anything, we keep all of these…but instead of 1-shotting, they should 2 or 3 shot (meaning 33% or 50% of your max HP with each hit), that way you’re allowed to make SOME mistakes, but too many will kill you. There, the fight isn’t as annoying, but it’s still challenging.

That’s not what I was getting at. You can’t do anything to the boss that will stop those effects from happening. They aren’t part of the boss, they’re part of the environment. Put any veteran monster in that same environment and you’ve just made that monster as difficult as Liadri.

"Challenging" PvE Content vs Ranger Mechanics

in Ranger

Posted by: Quarktastic.1027

Quarktastic.1027

The reason rangers have so few blast finishers, is because we have the best variety of combo fields in the game. We have:

  • Two fire fields
  • A frost field
  • A water field
  • Several poison fields
  • An ethereal field (two if we’re counting underwater skills)

The only fields we don’t have access to are light, dark, and smoke fields (except for one underwater smoke field).

That is a little bit misleading. The fields we directly have access to are:
- 1 Fire field via Torch 5
- 1 Water field via Healing Spring
- 2 Poison fields via Carrion Devourer and Murellow F2’s.

Indirectly we have 1 Fire and 1 Ice via traps, but these must be triggered by mob/player in order to activate and thus have much more limited use than a direct access field above. For example, backline support cannot use these to project through unless a mob or player walks over and triggers it, which would be a less than ideal situation for said backline support players.

All other fields generated by our pets are done on attacks we have absolutely no control over, which is more of a detriment than a benefit because they are placed in areas where they may or may not be useful and at times when we may or may not be in a position to interact with them. Additionally, they could interfere with other combo fields placed in the area for specifically required interaction – attacks can only interact with one field at a time, and they are not accessible at all when the pet is dead.

If we were to be the kings of combo field generation that would be great, but they would have to come without asterisks on so many of them in order to justify the limited finisher lineup we have. Remember, we have one blast finisher and one only – and that is only as of a month ago after a long hard campaign for this addition. It’s not like we had that out of the gate, we had to practically scream bloody murder just to get that small tiny sliver of useful group interaction.

Under water functionality is a completely separate conversation and can’t be included in our list. In fact, the only fields we have access to underwater are Ethereal and Poison, both via pet F2’s. All other combo field abilities and weapons are barred from use underwater.

Jellyfish have a water field and a smoke field.

What this guys shows here is more than just Warrior being strong. He has full control over his class and made not a single mistake. He knew exactly “what” she was doing and “when”. He is also the type of player that doesn’t take the easy way out looking at the way he dodges these AoE attacks while all he could do is just step aside.

His damage was insane, but still 1 mistake and he would have been dead just like any other person. anyways Good Job there and solid skills.

Call me when rangers or guardians can dish out over 40k damage in under 10 seconds. No other class could kill Liadri the way he killed her. I don’t think the combination of fear me, frenzy, and insane burst damage can be replicated by any other profession.

"Challenging" PvE Content vs Ranger Mechanics

in Ranger

Posted by: Quarktastic.1027

Quarktastic.1027

Relax, why so mad? Cof 1 is just a DPS test. Of course it’s easy (unless you can’t frogger!) Ranger is useful everywhere—dungeons, fractals, jubilee. The point is that rangers main gripe, the lack of group buffs, has gone away now ghat vigorous spirits and spiritual knowledge were combined into a single adept trait, making spirits incredibly useful. Along with the spotter buff to 150 aoe precision, ranger is basically a good choice. Don’t take my word, just play spirits yourself.

The problem, of course, is that your strawman is showing. Spirits are not so useful in the areas OP is referring to. AoE buffs needed there are those that cannot be destroyed: spotter (which you mentioned), guardian shouts, warrior banners, etc. Spirits and moas, neither of which can avoid the types of AoE’s being discussed, are far less useful. Besides, in other areas rangers are still weak: lack of variety in fields, and lack of variety in finishers. Okay, so we have a melee-range blast finisher on a 35-second cooldown now. Hooray! Except, who would use that when single handed ranger weapons are so bad, and thieves get a ranged blast finish with no cooldown? Also, rangers get what, 2 fields total? One of them is on an otherwise poor offhand, and the other requires you to sacrifice a lot of self healing potential and mobility. Compare this to what the thief has easy access to: smoke, poison, and dark, along with multiple types of finishers including spammable blast finish.

The reason rangers have so few blast finishers, is because we have the best variety of combo fields in the game. We have:

  • Two fire fields
  • A frost field
  • A water field
  • Several poison fields
  • An ethereal field (two if we’re counting underwater skills)

Must say there’s something not right about Queen Jenna. She can afford to build this HUGE pavillion but not to hire more guards to protect her subjects from centaur raids outside the city walls, and she takes advantage of a massive disaster wiping out a section of the city to free up the space for it. Kind of makes you think About Emperor Nero building his huge palace in the ruins of the fire that destroyed part of Rome. And yet despite her blatant disregard for the commoners, Logan loves her. And despite her constantly shooting down every suggestion he makes to her, and the fact she has no problem with the Countess’s having programed his history with Rytlock into the watchnight to unsettle him so he’d be more likely to loose.
I can’t help but wonder in light of her being a mesmer, if Queen Jenna’s controlling Logan’s mind somehow.

Isn’t that a fact?

This was where Logan first met Queen Jennah and made a pledge to serve as her champion, being enthralled by her beauty. If ever Jennah was to find herself in danger, their magical bond would allow Jennah to call Logan to her aid.

Perhaps Jennah is Lyssa taken human form.

Warrior: How to faceroll Liadri

in Queen's Jubilee

So I think the main tactic is:

1. Cripple the boss
2. Clump the enemy clones with the boss
3. Use fear me
4. Bull’s charge + frenzy + 100blades + whirling to a safe spot.
this should bring the boss down to 25% hp
Separate the boss from the clones and finish the job.
Sounds about right? – Requires extremely good timing….

That’s kind of what it looks like. If you’re not a warrior or don’t want to use fear me, you could bring one of these. I’m not sure if it will work out the same, due to being somewhat clunky, but a 5 second fear is nothing to scoff at.

I wouldn’t. You can still toss exotic dungeon weapons into the mystic toilet for a chance at a precursor.

And if you really wanted to, you can still flush those rare armors for a guaranteed rare armor which you can salvage. Plus a chance at an exotic.

Dungeon token stealth nerf?

Repeating a dungeon path on an alt still earns you:

  • Any loot dropped by whatever trash mobs your group chooses to kill.
  • Any loot bags dropped by champions your group chooses to kill.
  • 20 additional dungeon tokens.

Protip: there are a lot of champions roaming around the Ascalonian Catacombs. More so than a lot of other dungeons.

Because of scaling, Balthazar is actually easiest with around 10 people. The last time I did it with so few people, the escort event was done flawlessly, and the priest died within 2 minutes.

Whether or not it looks easy on the vid, im sure it took him a million tries like the rest of us.

According to him, it took 4 tries. Then he made a video.

I’m fairly certain it was because of a consumable. Grawl ritual totems grant a skull fear skill when consumed.

Oh joy, now you’re going to start another slew of people thinking warriors are better than everything else.

Time for videos on another class.

Show me a video of a guardian or ranger bursting Liadri down like that and I’ll believe anything you have to say.

Warriors break everything. Meanwhile, my guardian is stuck circle strafing while spamming 1. Because he doesn’t have OP utilities like endure pain and fear me.

If you really want a ‘Living World’ , let’s get it on, ArenaNet.

Add land for players to purchase, build keeps/farms and to upgrade.

Add Hunting, Fishing and Farming. Let us grow, tend and harvest crops.

Add the ability to add NPCs to your property…guards, farmers, blacksmiths, etc.

Add guild halls and player owned shops.

Add player driven events that reward other players for participating. For example, I could send my wheat out on Pack Dolyaks, from my farm to market, through a GUI drop-down menu. If they make it alive, I get gold for grain. If other players step in to guard my dynamic event, they get a share of the profit in the form of gold, karma, etc.

GIVE US SEASONS! The world’s look is beautiful but all too stagnant. Better weather effects and a night that is actually dark would be nice, too. Give us a reason to use our new found torches.

More focus on zone by zone storytelling through progressive dynamic events and less focus on world/player base-funneling, one-time events. It’s nice to have large things happen in the world, on occasion, but temporary content is better suited to holidays than cohesive story lines.

It would also be nice to have a concise, in-game calendar to clarify what is considered to be annual/recurring ‘holiday’ content. It seems that it would be much less confusing and easier to follow the Living Story content with such an event calendar.

Someone give this person a job!

Thanks for the feedback everyone and please keep it coming. Personally, I find that one of the hardest parts of being a desginer on GW2 Live is coming to terms with the fact that not every update will please every player. We do our best to deliver appealing content with enough variety to keep as many people as satisfied as possible. And If there’s one thing we can do consistently, it’s improving the experience of said content each time. I think we made some great strides with the Jubilee. I think we have a lot of room to keep growing. But our team isn’t done yet. We’ve got some exciting things coming later this month. Things you’ve never seen in this game before.

But in the mean time, please keep telling us what you’re thinking. We are listening. Not only to what you’re saying but also to what you’re not. The very first living world team actually did the thing some of you have called for. Some 40 or so permanent events were added around the game in our very first content update. They were met with little interest or fanfare. Granted, Halloween may have stolen the show. But those events are still in the game today. I’ve seen very little reaction to them, however, positive or negative. Despite this, there are many events I would still like to add. Many zones and bosses I would love to revisit. As we get better at the living world, I strongly suspect we’ll have room to get around to them as well. Assuming that’s what our players really want. You are all the second half of the collaborative process, so thanks for helping!

Those events just kind of blend in with the rest of the zone and get largely ignored. Unless they’re large meta events like the dragons, the frozen maw etc.

What are your thoughts on the difficulty of Liadri? She is so far and above the difficulty of the other contenders in the gauntlet that her presence is almost comical.

Also, the Mega Destroyer event chain in mount maelstrom still doesn’t grant a daily bonus chest, despite having all the hallmarks of a meta event.

So this took me 4 attempts. Once I got the shield down I just did huge burst and killed her in 15 seconds.

Let me guess…zerker warrior with frenzy? Drop the shield, fear the clones, and spin to win?

Pretty much. It wasn’t really optimal because I was just practicing and had useless weapon like Sword offhand.

Tips for a guardian? Once I get into a rhythm in phase 2 it goes pretty smoothly, until I get dragged into a rift that spawned across the room out of my FoV.
