Of course leagues mean nothing without significant fixes.
Last season you could eZ mode your way to legendary – I don’t expect this season will be different.
People expect legendary to be hard to get – but it isn’t – you just have to cheese it. And so many did last season.

These changes were significant enough, most people have issue with team vs pug. Although, they are right, this is needed to grow the esport scenes. Beside that the ladder feels competitive.

Thief’s paper thin sustain keeps it from being totally OP, but if you know how to dodge…. then the OP train has arrived!

You know that those actually exist:

  • a block skill for condition application: any block skill prevents condi applications too
  • Condition Reflect: a reflect skill will reflect any reflectable conditions (LB on warrior and SB on ranger and thief for example).

I know this is not what you had in mind, but I’m just trying to remind you that condis don’t just appear on you, they came with an attack that you can counter the same way you counter a physical attack AND you can on top of that cleanse or resistance. There is already more counter to condi than to physical damage. What condi lacks is mitigation (toughness/protection/many traits and runes benefits).

I don’t think it works like that on AOE conditions. And what i’m talking about would ONLY apply to the conditions so if you pop a condition block skill against a physical attack w/ conditions, you would still receive the direct damage.

Condition Immunity – this is the Resistance boon so more access to it?
Condition Reflect – Mesmers have Arcane Thievery which transfers conditions to a target and Necros have something similar I think.

But the condition has to be applied first in those situations. I’m saying you reflect the condition without ever receiving it.

If you have resistance up you still have the condition applied to you correct? What i’m saying is when you are attacked with a condition the word Immune would pop up like block does and the condition would fail completely.

This would allow condi builds to continue without nerf but you would have a better defense

R O C.6574, even with new stuff they would make it the only option and be much more effective, and thus overhwelming the actual ones, it would be the same movie over and over and over again.

In terms of class balance and class evolution Gw2 migh be the one of the worse in game industry in all times, i think they should receive a gamming oscar for that achievement.
They keep forcing a broken model.

I think it’s too soon to tell. Their last chance to redeem themselves will be the addition of new elites and what that does to the meta. The new elites will have to be on par with the HoT elites otherwise it will be an epic fail.

What does the community think about adding a couple new skills to balance Condi Crap Bombs:

Condition Immunity – would basically be a block skill for condition application. So if you run into a fight with Mesmers and Necros, you cant pop a skill that gives you like 5 seconds of Immunity or something.

Condition Reflect – needs a cooler name, but you get the idea. Any condition cast at you would be applied to the source. That’ll make condi spammers think twice about dumping all their conditions on you

Nerfing the HoT specs won’t happen. There are way too many additional mechanics beside OP skills.

I see, that what I thought as well, Venom share works great in tf… but I will study your build; I am also delighted that more thieves are trying venom share.

I’m actually using mercenary amulet right now. I put sage on the build anticipating the nerf. I also switched to rune of thorns to push my poison up even farther

Would love to have a 5 thief match-up. As a thief main. You do realize that a single CC would be enough to implode your dodging puppet right? It takes one steal and a focus fire to implode you in a teamfight, especially if I have revenant or chrono on my side. And if you can’t win your teamfights you hardly have a chance to win the game. You don’t kill fast enough to warrant outrotating the enemy.

No, you won’t. The game will just remain dead.

The problem with HoT specs is that not only are they immensely more powerful than core, they’re also way too forgiving of poor play. When build > skill, even if everyone has those “meta” builds, the game is dead. Despite changes to elite specs for 3 live cycles, the “meta” is still 6 builds – most of which have been the same each cycle. It would be even less if ESL hadn’t implemented a “one of each profession” rule.

There is only one answer: nerf HoT specs. Until that happens, PvP in GW2 will continue to circle the drain.

So what does that nerf look like? Does daredevil lose 3rd evade? What i think you’re saying is that you have to take the elite traitline to be competitive. So if you had an equally powerful elite to choose as an alternitive to the HoT spec, wouldn’t that give you more diversity?

Are you sure it’s not METABattle’s fault? I think 80% of PVPer’s just go there to get a decent build and go with it. The seasons get really competitive and everyone is paranoid that losing will trash their MMR. So the don’t risk experimental builds. I’ve been playing since 2012 and METABattle was not as prevalent as it is now. Back when the game was new, people had to come up with there own build and the META was a secret to be discovered. Now the best builds are laid out for all to see, so that’s all you see…

There used to be a site (can’t remember it now) that listed “glass cannon” “bunker” and “balanced” builds for every profession.

Metabattle is only partly responsible. Actually, one year ago metabattle had already a strong influence on PvP.

The problem is that the build diversity has effectively gone down.

Elite specs have some highly broken mechanics, which creates a huge difference between builds using and having synergy with them and builds which do not.

Also, the absurd pressure that enemies bring (with their own broken elite specs) force you to play a very specific way to be able to survive. For example, the amount of condition is insanely high, so you have very very hard time if you don’t spec against them.

Let us take an example: mesmer (my main).

  1. The shield is probably our strongest off-hand with very high defense, very good CC, high illusion generation and some support. Alacrity pretty much improve anything we do as mesmer and F5 allow double cast anything we want. No other traitline give you so much. So we have to run chronomancer (broken elite spec)
  2. We need to run inspiration if we want to survive the insane condition output of other classes (including enemy mesmers, how ironic!). Mesmer is otherwise very weak against condis.
  3. we have now 1 traitline to pick. That leaves us domination for power, chaos for bunker and illusion for condi. Power has a really low damage output. The burst is high, but with all the defensive elements of enemies, it is not enough to really pressure someone, and we lack follow up damage. That leaves us bunker (Paladin) and condi (Mercenary). Our support is fairly low, so bunker, while definitely playable does not have the same kick as it used to. Condi survives almost as well if not better (benefits from CD reduction of illusion on both shatters and shield block) and synergize very well with the illusion spam traits that chronomancer give you (broken elite spec again). These illusion spam traits also synergize very well with inspiration for more cleanse and heal. Tadaa!!!!! A broken build.

Can you play bunker? Yes but you don’t gain survivability while you lose damage.
Can you play power? Yes, but you lose survivability and you have no damage after your initial burst which everyone can block/evade/invuln or simply fully heal right after.

So yes, in principle you have build diversity, but nowhere near as good as the broken meta specs and small minor variations around them.

Maybe it’ll take the introduction of new elite specs. Hopefully they’re not more OP than the current elite specs.

Venom share thief

Not really. I use the double pistol to administer the venom and try and stay mid-range. Every time the venoms are off cooldown in a team fight, use them.
Always try and use the venoms with allies inside your radius line.
Use all your venoms right before the gate opens.

I’m sure other people are better at playing this than me, but that’s the strategy i go with.

It seems to work good for team fights. If i drop in late to a 3v3 or whatever and pop all my venoms, it usually ends with 3 downed enemies.

1v1 is not as good as my other thief build. Having impact strike at the end of your burst is key

It’s only one match if you win with 1 of the 4 professions of the day. Like I said, 95% of the time I have one of my mains as an option. Why do you care if it’s easy? I think they are trying to bring people into pvp. Anyway, I don’t want to spend 25 badges of honor in WVW or chop down trees in some random zone to finish my daily which is even easier and also more lame.

I play rev and thief mainly. 95% of the time one of those is up for PVP win daily. Please don’t change this. Getting my daily in one match is awesome. Just que in unranked if you suck at the profession you are playing.

All thief team has to have a completely different strategy. You are at a huge disadvantage in the amount of damage you can sustain. But you dominate in mobility. If you are all disengaging instead of dying, the other team starts to get flustered that their points never stay capped for more than a couple seconds. And the insta-kills with 2 or 3 thieves are so kittening fast.

I anticipate queueing for games in S3 as thief, but then having to swap to an alt for most games due to getting paired with other thieves. =/

From what i can tell, multiple thieves on a team in S3 will be a benefit. Here’s a fun trick for team fights: stand in the middle of a point, cast Shadow Refuge and blast area blindness while your fellow thieves burst the kitten out of the other team.

Why? Whenever you put down SR, everyone comes over to try and cleave you while you’re in stealth, but now they’re all blinded. just spam short bow #2 while the rest of your team AA. When is the last time you had 5 thieves on a team in the “upper” tiers? it’s kittening amazing how fast a focused target goes down with 3 or 4 thieves bursting

Lol, yea, I can see it now. The Abjured Astral Authority will now be running this comp and winning tourneys with this gimmick, I’m sure. I mean, there’s no possible way that couldn’t work out and if you burst one person, surely, you just won the game.

Though judging by the time, team and personal scores, I’d say you guys backcap them like fighting guerrilla warfare in Vietnam lol.

That’s pretty much how it went. We tied them up off point alot while teammates got caps. We mostly played sides.

Still having fps issues. Everytime the game updates i get hopeful that anet will fixed the problem. Same thing with nvidia…

Right, the old “it’s not expensive” defense. I’m immune to these white knight red herrings. I don’t think the expansion is worth 50 dollars, much less since I only PvP, but I don’t care about the money. Maybe they should just done what they said they were going to do?

So it’s the broken promise that has you all twisted up? Can you link a source for this promise that the elite specs would be equal to the core ones? I get it. They should stand by their word. I didn’t know such a statement had been made. I just assumed elite meant better.

I waited 3 months before i bought the expansion. I played pvp with my core builds against elite builds. It was a lot harder to win. So what? I stopped doing pvp and did my dungeon thing. I like playing gw2 and I wanted play the new content, but I, like yourself, hate spending money on things.

I’m not the best at pvp and I realized that if I wanted to be competitive, i’d need to purchase HOT. So I did. That doesn’t mean someone can’t be competitive with just the core game. You just need above average skill to beat average players. If you call it pay2win whatever.

Expansions are a staple of MMO’s and in most cases come with increase in character level increase in item level etc. This game is quite different in that you don’t have to grind off an extra 10 levels but in order to keep things fresh there are new specs people can use once they get the expansion. In many cases the elite specs are upgrades over the base profession but the reality is even if they perfectly balanced every elite with the base prof the player with the expansion will still have an advantage over you as they have more options available.

If your not willing to fork out 50 or so dollars for hundreds of hours of entertainment you mustn’t be really interested in the game in which case why does it matter to you how competitive you are in pvp?

I don’t want to spend hundreds of hours playing this game. You’re completely right though, if I were a die hard GW2 player, that played every day, and was grinding hard for a legendary, buying the expansion would be crucial.

However, I’m not a die hard fan, and when I do play, I like to have the same advantages in PvP as other players.

Why should I be at a disadvantage just because I don’t want to pay $50.

Why do you feel so entitled is my question. If someone has a better computer and Internet connection, they are going to have an advantage in pvp. If someone has faster reflexes, they are going to have an advantage in pvp. If someone owns HOT, they will have more build options, not necessarily an advantage.

Also, I guess someone should tell you: Anet exists to make money. Just like all businesses. There’s no subscription fee, so gem sales and expansions are how they pay their employees. What makes you think they are going to spend time on something to make it easier for people who don’t contribute to the game anymore?

Count the money in your piggy bank, mow a few lawns, then buy the expansion. The core game was out for like 3 years before HOT. Haven’t you gotten your money’s worth yet?

The MM is biased. Every day I get 4-5 decent games with 50% win/loss chance when i start playing, the more I play i get worst games down to 10% win chance.

That’s how they hook you. Then once you’re hooked they feed you to the people who won’t play if they lose. It’s marketing.

I doubt its marketing. I rather believe that the system trys to avoid matching the same players together or against each other. After the first few games, everyone in your range has played with you already. Hence, the system has to reach out wider. If there are less players above you than below, you will get matched with worse players and lose more often.

If that’s true, my suggestion would be to have a check box at the end of a match allowing you to “re-queue with same team” . Everyone that checks the box will be on the same team in the next match. It’s easier and less involved than forming a party. But the biggest thing is that you wouldn’t be counted as a pre-made.
