It is not related to the portal stone, that much is ascertained from those who have gained the chest(s). I haven’t gained a portal and got 2 chests and 4k influence.

It is likely one of 3 things
1) Stress test related
2) a bug, possibly related to 1)
3) a belated anniversary gift, staggered out in the mail.

Im leaning towards 1) but even I think that would be unfair. Beta access was gift enough, but not everyone being able to obtain these really nice presents just for the roll of the dice, is not a fair option.

Hopefully Anet can clear this up…I am extremely surprised no mention has come from them despite posts n this reported all day across many subforums, including bugs.

It is a 10 years old game. And it’s very different than guild wars 2.

In some ways, It may be more similar to a RTS game like Warcraft than an MMO like world of Warcraft.

It’s perfectly doable solo (you have AI companions to help you out), and it still looks pretty enough. The lore is interesting and the game has a lot of content. You will get value out of this game.

The best value for you money? Hard to say. The game shows its age: no z axis, no jumping, no auction house. The Pvp scene is pretty dead, and the PvE scene might as well be if you want to do more than chat and trade.

This is a very good analysis of the game at this stage of its life.

Does the game have a large population? Well ive been logging in daily for a month or 2 to do HoM stuff. You will see sporadic appearances of people as they go on their way, but for all intents and purposes, you wont get much multi player action anymore unless you look really hard for it.

If you can stomach a dated game it is very good. It is neither better or worse than GW2, it is just completely different.

2 warriors. Partly due to wanting different uilds and no build template being in place.

The main reason is I like to create specific roles/looks/build combos for a toon and sometimes it isn’t viable for me to create that with one character.

My main warr is a tanky style Norn, who prefers a mace/shield set up. And has a look to match that.
My second Warr, is set up to look like a dragon knight with matching sword and axe. With an appropriate build to go alongside, which is dps focussed.

I’m not one for optimised/meta builds. I play for looks and styles I enjoy

Can forum-banned players get the portal?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

The vast majority of players are “banned” from the forums. Everyone that hasn’t logged in to the forums before has not accepted the agreement and thus cannot access them.

If they were going to reject people for not being able to access the forums, that would include most people. Regardless, you can use the in-game tool to submit beta reports. If you still want to leave feedback, post it on reddit or gw2guru – the devs are also there.

Lastly, what you do on the forums can affect your game account, but only in extreme cases.

People in the beta will obviously be directed to the forums…

I remember blizzard did it with one WoW beta, as the forums were where 95% of the feedback was taken.

Yes, but this isnt Blizzard. Anet doesnt use its forums the same way. Doesnt mean they wont utilise them, just means the emphasis isnt on exclusively here like it would be traditionally.

Ultimately the question is answered though. Looting the portal and beta access is unaffected by a forum ban.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

The two aren’t linked and the devs have always maintained unless extremely rare exceptional circumstances crop up, a ban in one doesn’t affect the other.

The short answer is…no the forum ban does not affect the ability to get into beta and forums aren’t as important a part of the beta as it would be for other games.

As for feedback..well they do read some forum feedback. And reddit too. You can also submit bug reports about the beta directly in game. The latter 2 options will not affect a forum banned player who wishes to continue to give feedback if they get into the beta. It’s not like other MMO betas though with dedicated forums for feedback. Anet monitor beyond the forums for their needs.

I like it as it is, although it used to be much worse and a lot more mobs to get aggroed by.
Being so close to the games primary enemy at that point, it needs to be pretty rough going otherwise it defeats the point.

The last zone, cursed shore is worse for this as well imo.

All the newer zones post orr like southson, dry top and silverwastes are different designs. Mobs are much harder for the new attacks and ai. Orr will prepare you well for those.

In basic terms, based on no knowledge of the game;

- new maps and new story
- new ways to travel through the maps (eg gliding exclusive to thsoe maps)
- professions get a new weapon choice based on a new sub profession each. ie more variety per profession
- Guild Halls
- new maps for pvp and wvw
- changes to the way you “build” a character. In this case traits. Also known as perks in other games. Also things called “masteries” which you can assign xp to post max level, which will allow you to essentially research new abilites, related to things like gliding, crafting, friendships to new races and lore
- a new heavy armoured profession called the Revenant
- improved reward system for core zones when doing activities in them
- ability to craft the base weapon for “legendary” weapons rather than rely on pure luck for a drop

Basically it sets up new systems to evolve the game and professions from for future updates, plus furthering the existing

I’m not understanding the issue. Them getting one doesn’t prevent you from getting one. Flagging them wont change anything whatsoever.

Also, disregard anything you read in chat. People can lie, post multiple times, link chat codes etc. So many people trolling their finds out there just to get a rise in map chat and on the forums…

If those people are “trolling” then the drop rate is way worse than precursors.

Not everyone is trolling, but there will be people doing it because that’s just the way ti goes.

In terms of the drop rate, well I can’t really say how rare it is. Sure I haven’t had a drop, but between people not linking in chat, large numbers of megaserver shards across 2 maps and 2 continents, across a wide spectrum of time zones, we’re never going to see enough to make a judgement.
All we can say for sure is that it wasn’t enough initially hence why they upped the droprate and a lot of people Ive seen have been saying how much fun they have had trying regardless of a drop or not.

I agree with OP on almost everything. They should have maintained same direction as during first year but I guess it wasn’t profitable enough.

But the company was criticised as much as it is now for the its first year, whichw as much a test for them as anything else. That first year was not a popular time for a lot of people and yet is now looked on with fondnes. Personally I enoyed it, but I look back and see how it was lacking in foresight for the future – ie no replayable season1 and a confusing mess of a story we have for new players now which is likely extremely off putting. Something that was warned from many quarters at the time.

I disagree some of the OP’s megaserver comments. Having the home server and megaserver separate options would not be viable and defeat the purpose and we’d have complaints and fights about people unable to get into a home server.. It’s all in or not at all and the gains we’ve got from the existence of the meagserver outweigh the server identity positives.

The example I give in this case it Lotro. Server Gilrain – one of the most well rounded communities developed to the point it became like a large guild rather than a server. Fun, friendly, high community spirit. What happened to it? It got abandoned as players searched for servers with more players. In the end the servers with the least identity became the highest population servers.

Server identity is great, but never for long. It can’t maintain a population. Only people available playing the content can and that’s what the megaservers give us.

Why is everything time gated?

You can get 55 laurels every 28 days. You will eventually come to a point like all of us where you have no other use for them other than to convert them to gold. Doing achievements also nets you laurels although it’s not really worth actively doing.

The problem with that is do the math on getting enough for all the ascended recipes you want to make for your alts and a set of ascended jewelry for each alt – let’s say the alt number is 8 (one of each class, which is common). That is too long a time to reasonably gear up for these items.

Let’s say you throw out ascended recipes altogether. That’s still too slowly to reasonably gear up each character with 5 trinkets each.

The old method was 1 day completing dailies, and 10 a month completing monthlies. That’s 41 max, so you’re still better off in the current format.

The argument isn’t that you don’t get more now than before. We all get that you do. The point is it’s still too slow a rate to reasonably gear up multiple characters with trinkets, to say nothing of ascended recipes for each of the armor weights – more than that unless you use the same stats on all your alts.

If it boils down to it being too slow, then yes I think almost everyone will agree. That I don’t believe is linked to laurels though since I find them one of the more reasonable acquisitions for ascended. Laurels simply slow the process down for the uber rich and level the field out somewhat as the devs wanted.

I will take the point that ascended really punishes you if you want ascended for a lot of toons or for a toon with multiple set ups though.

Ultimately, ascended exists for fractals. Considering how few people are likely to be super geared in full ascended for the rest of the game, I suspect most people could bridge the gap with stat food. It’s easy to get and overlooked by sooooo many people (as confirmed once by a dev a long time ago).

Is it slower than it needs to be? Yes, but that’s more to do with the mats required and the imbalance vs armour weights.
Is it intentionally this slow? Yes

Why is everything time gated?

to make the ascended gear that everyone already has

I doubt most people have much in the way of ascended items at all. Maybe a piece here and there, but generally the acquisition and the existence will turn all but either the most hardcore, completest or dedicated of players off. I haven’t spoken to anyone in game who has a full set of ascended gear or is aiming for it.They simply aren’t needed or required beyond high level fractals. Obviously if that is your aim though, then my point is moot.

I’m trying to determine if the beta participants are predetermined, and going to Silverwastes is an indicator of their activity (they almost immediately get portal drops). They could have gone the email way of sending beta invites, but by doing it this way they create hype, as well as confirming those they chose to include in beta are active in game. I need confirmation if this is true or not from the time spent by players when they got their beta invite/portal drop.

Gotta love conspiracy theories.

Even if you truly believe this, you wouldn’t have access to anywhere near enough data asking the forums to come close to forming an accurate determination.

You provide no evidence for your claim. I don’t know why people keep trying to answer my question when they don’t have any actual information to share.

That’s all the information anyone can give you though. We aren’t devs, we don;t have that concrete info and it is very rare for a dev to reply on the community forums. If we could use our original beta access, which was for the stress test, not this closed beta (which are two separate things and advertised very clearly as such), then they would have said so.
It’s even in the email that says the invitation will come from looting a portal stone. It doesn’t say earlier beta will get auto the invite so that’s as a close as definite that your old beta invite was for that one time only, as I can possibly give you – this logically puts everyone on a fair and even footing.

That’s why you are getting this info repeated. You asked us and we gave you all we can. in an effort to be helpful.

You could always try twitter – ppl generally get more answers to these things there than the forums as it is constantly monitored

You have to find a portal stone. If your previous access applied, it would say. That access was for the stress test only and the email sign up was for a chance at that beta only.

As for your slot, well if you get a portal there is a good chance you can carry your toon over since it did for the stronghold beta. But it isnt guaranteed, as they said in the original beta.

I’m genuinely curious, why would you quit over something fairly innocuous that has been stockpiled? What had been planned for such a large number of Tomes? I largely disregard them tbh.

What does it matter what had been planned? We all know what the Tomes do, so… really, do you need ask what the plans are?

We’ll just say all in all, my Husband is not happy. Between the two of us, I’m the gamer in the house and he has little time to play. Stockpiling these tomes to make any future progression he makes in the game easier for him to do is something that should be entirely left to his discretion, as with the introduction of these tomes made that an option for him to do.

He read over the new trait changes coming, he doesn’t like it (which, he’s entitled to feel the way he feels, regardless of my opinion). He’s afraid that with the rumor of the removal of tomes, he’s angry as what he has understood of this new trait system; his being a tank will be largely affected. His health pool is greatly contributed to how his places his traits, after this new Specialization Primer, he livid because he think we’ll all have to buy new armor.

That having been said, I cannot disregard his concern over the rumor of these tomes. I hate to say this but it really does feel like ArenaNet is revamping the entire game system on us, and… a few of us… just wanna know… why? That’s all.

I’m just trying to understand why it would be an issue. If the point is to feedback to Anet (if it is true and nothing has been said yet at all) that you are unhappy about it, stating why would help the cause so much more. Which you sort have in your follow up post (although I still disgaree any issue is at hand, but that’s a different point)

I would completely ignore any rumours as well. Having looked over the dulfy notes and read over the blog in my detail, many rumours have been debunked utterly since they are based on supposition and overflating the actual facts. If you are genuinely concerned over this, I would wait until the actual details are put forward by Anet themselves. I too thought it was an entire revamp, then I read up further on the details and it isn’t at all. A tidy, some streamlining and some future proofing, but not a fully game/build breaking overhaul.

Ive no clue what plans are for ToK (since I barely use them), but until Anet say they are changing, as far as I and anyone should be concerned, they are not

I think it is one of those things I wont really understand fully until it goes live.

I’m in two minds about major changes like these. If it’s a big overhaul, it removes some of the connection you build with your toon and one can only hope such changes don’t come with every expac as that would be exhausting. I remember Lotro killed its playerbase when it did the same thing.

However, it could be a positive change and that will remain to be seen until we can play with it. AT least it is hand in hand with a ton of new content which will offset the below of any overhauls.

Aesthetically it would be highly impressive
