This is not just you as a new player. People have brought this up since…. well… forever. Many a medium armor user is tired of coats and wish for greater variation.
Ironically as having an heavy armor based I would kill for just 1 coat
Well the stat gains, and in exchange make them easier to get.
I see where you’re going with this . . .
Why thank you that is where I was going.
Man now you made us both be rude. UGH >:D hehe
(edited by Revolution.6301)
But doesn’t ascended make an already unbalance game part even more unbalanced?
Logic is everyones’ friend and enemy at the same time.
Laurls are like FOTM but even more annoying.
BURN THEM BOTH AT THE STAKE.
That is all.
I agree..
How are either of these things going to fix any of the issues this game is currently dealing with? Answer they aren’t..
Laurels wont fix loot issues and it wont fix open world, it doesn’t help wvw and it wont stop people leaving in droves..
Dante your common sense is OUSTOUNDING!
Have a cookie, you clearly deserve it.
So do you think ascended gear should be removed?
What? No endgame? Come on guys, we have Southsun Cove and the new Living Story. Two gigantic content updates! Come on, get happy!
Don’t be rude.
It can hurt feelings ya know?
So if I don’t sugarcoat the reality of the situation, that makes me rude?
I think it does. I think it does. I think it does.
Pure target audience strategy. They saw how westerners rejected Asian elements during Mists of Pandaria development, so they took it as a business rule and wanted to surf on the rejection. That is speculation of course, but it is so obvious …
That’s not what happened. This went down long before anyone even know MOP was coming. It was simply a cultural consideration.
But isn’t culture what makes the GuildWars franchise so entertaining? I’ve seen China done alot but GuildWars made me not despise seeing it + the buildings look cool
Seperate the cultures again. We really need to see some differences and not just large lump. Reminds me of the melting pot really.
PLEASE don’t make GW2 into a melting pot.
Actual some fancy fun armors should be added. I mean how are you not fine with armor yet fine with weapon skins?
I saved up 8000 dungeon tokens from 4 different dungeons, and 250g as well.
Spent all of it on exotic greatswords from the TP, and dungeon swords from trading in tokens (each greatsword was either 390 tokens or between 3-4g)
Not only did I not get a precursor, but I didn’t once get even a “semi” rare sword (one of the ones worth more than the standard 3-4g). I got mostly pearl and carrion greatswords with one or two skybringers and a dhummseal.
After going 18 daily rounds in FotM at lvls 10 and 20 in a row without so much as a ring, let alone a glob or vial of pink mist, and now this, it seems the entire “end game” is based off of the terrible RNG.
Anyway, just thought I’d put this out there in case anyone else was thinking of spending money and dungeon tokens on the mystic forge to try and obtain a precursor. I’m uninstalling the game myself, I just don’t really see the point in playing anymore. I’ve seen all the content, really was just trying to get further into the FotM and/or get my legendary (which I had all the components for with the exception of the precursor. It’s been fun guild wars, but the RNG just kills this for me.
LOL your so lucky! To have all that money! Why’d you just throw it out? Poor people like me need it! We would’ve made actual use of it and bought the pre!
Why can’t you SELL them baffles me.
You that item that should take exploring the game and doing aload of activities you can now grind for? Yeah that weapon. It shouldn’t even be called legendary weapons anymore it should be call grindary weapons!
What? No endgame? Come on guys, we have Southsun Cove and the new Living Story. Two gigantic content updates! Come on, get happy!
Don’t be rude.
It can hurt feelings ya know?
No, I don’t play enough to justify it + GW2 while it make change things up it is NOT a revolution in MMOs. If it was we would see the kitten grind system and the kitten factions and kitten out we would not see kittens period! I hate kittens!
If things got fixed more you’d see less complaints, obviously there will always be complaints but a lot like loot, grind and certain other types would dry up…
fix them? no you mean give people infraction points for bringing them up!
There is to much grind in this game.
That is all.
I for one think that the casual / console player has ruined a lot of opportunity for good design in this game.
I for one think that the casual / console mechanics has ruined a lot of opportunity for good design in this game, not the players…
Everything about this game has been “streamlined” down so far to appeal to certain crowd that cannot understand complex game-play and might need to actually think in the game..
Thinking in games is not fun apparently..especially with a certain growing community.
Now I feel in insulted man. I am casual yes. But I enjoyed alot and wish there were more games like Dark Souls. Dark Souls dephth in combat is truly quite amazing.
Sir take that comment back.
Tybalt should have been the Hero. Treefern is just so boring.
exactly!
Treefern truly was blank and you just could care less about him.
Hey there!
I’ve stumbled across a thread in the forums of a quite popular MMO. The story you can read there is both heartbraking and encouraging, but also one that affects us all, even here in GW2. Because oneself was either the “noob” or the “pro”.
Applied to GW, there are several aspects that can be discussed.
- One might be: Would this poor old guy have the same problems in GW2 as in WoW? How much help would he get 1. from the game 2. from the players? In other words: How friendly is this game towards beginners?
- Another aspect might be, how far the “pros” can lift up as compared to the rest of the players. Means, how much more skill can one acquire in this game and is there a limit?
- Or you could also simply ask yourself: How many people have you helped and how many helped you?
etc.
My opinion:
Considering how young GW2 still is, I don’t think it would escalate that much as it happened to the guy (server-wide known “noob” and hated by many). However, you can see tendencies that this might become more real in the future. Not talking about that guys in front of a dungeon looking for “lvl 80 exotic only”, “ZERK WARRIORS ONLY” etc (although their number increases). It is more about the prejudices people have against “randoms” and “PUGS”. Yes, prejudices. Of course you might get a group member who only trolls, insults and quits during a dungeon or whatever. But they are a minority. Report them.
Most people play MMOs like GW2 to have fun with others. They even paid money to do thatGive them a chance, you won’t regret it.
On the other hand, ArenaNet might also consider improvements. Starting with a better introduction to the game itself (at least tell people to use /wiki because it is a great help) to a better “We achieved this goal together” feeling (defeating a dragon champion doesn’t feel like that at all). A group finder is fortunately to be expected in the near future.
There’s also a Reddit post with some quite good statements: http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/186apk/with_all_the_80s_only_or_full_exo_set_only_being/
Thanks for reading
Tl;dr: Don’t see the noob, see the guy behind his monitor.
no elitism was GuildWars1 since in the game’s gameplay (oddly enough) was more deeper due to having aload more skills and ways to play. It lacked a dodge but really thats the only thing that seperated it if it had that then GW2 really wouldn’t be considered even ‘barly deep’.
And in Underworld people demanded to see how many of an item (forgot the name) you had to prove you knew how to play UW (you got this item by playing UW) Though at times the amount ranged into a few 100 which was insane.
I’m questioning the same thing. Anyone know?
The problem as a whole is that there are not enough items in GW2 to play for. So it feels like a “grind” to get the legendary because it requires so many steps and hard to get items. What we really need are tons more items of varied levels of value and varied levels of time required to get it.
So they added a few more items (ascended), but to get those you have to play the game in a very strict and directed way (dungeon or laurels). Which i think takes away from fun, and makes the gameplay weriod, and feels like a grind.
yes your right, but ascended should have been just a fancy skin. Adding stats is not fair to those who just don’t have the time BUT an awsome looking skins would’ve been so cool
If there were more skins to grind for and grind for stat items reduced everyone would stop being at each others throats about this and be fine with it.
No ideas at all? Cmon this community is full of people with ideas!
Generally though, if enough of us speak up Anet will eventually listen!
People who want to see a seperated community united on terms of what they expect please voice your opinion!
But try and be nice about them okay?
They plan on increasing the max level anyway…
Mind citing your sources?
I’m sorta bored so I found it for him.

Finally someone with an eye for ambience.
I really want to see areas in GW2 with the ambience that maps in GW1 had.
To name a few:
-Echovald Forest
-Jade Sea
-Desolation
-Crystal Desert
-Vabbi
-Fire Islands
YES YES YES.
Laurls are like FOTM but even more annoying.
BURN THEM BOTH AT THE STAKE.
That is all.
OP that was quite a laugh! But it is so true, probably why its so funny.
Well at times I have to weigh seriously, farming mobs like the chickens in the Tunnel run or Dragon. I’ve tried the dragon a few times and all I get are greens. Over and ovER and OVER AGAIN.
Really no one has any idea on how to fix this? Everyone clearly sees an issue though. Then why not make simple suggestions like I made?
Speak for yourself…not me. I don’t see a grind for me personally so no issue here. If someone feels that they are grinding then they need to re-evaluate their personal approach to playing the game and decide if it’s worth it to them or not.
No matter what is done someone, somewhere will think that there’s a grind. I don’t really see any solution to that. Sorry.
Did you actually bother to read my thread? No you didn’t.
Let me explain it to you.
This thread is not a “OMG There is Lots of grind in this game!” or “This is so, So grind free!”
This thread points out that there are two types of people, people who love grind and those you dont.
So the point of it all is to come up with suggestions to please both.
Read a thread before commenting randomly.
In the past, I never lasted long playing MMO’s. The reason, of course, is the grind. The Guild Wars 2 people, on the other hand, have made it their mission to eliminate grind from their game. And, so far, it’s been the most enjoyable MMO I’ve ever played. However, it hasn’t eliminated grind because it still relies too much on one game mechanic: counting your activities.
The most obvious counter is the Daily. I opened up the Daily recently and the list had things like “Kill 5 veteran monsters”, “Dodge 10 attacks”, “Gather 30 items”, etc. Easy enough to do. Problem was I had no intention of crafting that particular day. I literally started dozing off trying to get enough green logs and onions and whatnot. I didn’t care what I was gathering. Yet I felt compelled to do it because there’s a counter on the right promising me some loot if I just keep going.
The Flame and Frost prelude content is better at hiding the counter, but it still has one. At first I thought I was helping a bunch of refugees. Then I found the counter in the Achievements panel that said I needed to complete 75 refugee-related things to finish the quest. Now I’m chasing a number again.
By counting activities, the game is making the player aware of repetition. By setting a specific number of times to do something and then putting a big carrot at the end of it, the game is encouraging you to grind. The consequence is that it breaks the illusion that you’re playing a role in an actual world.
So what’s the solution? The obvious and best answer is to design quests that complete based on context, not amount. You complete the quest by “killing ALL the bandits” as opposed to “killing 10 bandits”, for example. Contextualizing every event into the overall pastiche of the game world is the most difficult thing to do and, frankly, is something the Guild Wars 2 staff do amazingly well! But they still rely on a counter or a progress bar to define “progress.”
How can you define progression without making it seem pointless and repetitive? It’s tough! A game where you’re meant to play for hundreds of hours can’t practically avoid repetition. So how do you make it less boring?
So how about this? Instead of counting UP, why not count DOWN?
Think about it. What’s more exciting, counting DOWN the seconds to New Years Day or counting UP to 100 push ups? Instead of saying “Kill 10 underwater creatures”, say “3 more underwater creatures left”. The player doesn’t have to worry about if he did X amount of anything. He only has to worry about if he’s on the last one. By doing this simple flip, you place the emphasis on the GOAL, not the amount!
This is a fundamental change in how we look at MMO game progress. Though technically it’s still a counter, people respond to countdowns totally differently. In my opinion, this would alleviate a lot of the tedium associated with completing tasks.
It’s not a complete solution, mind you. The actual solution would be to eliminate counters altogether but that is a much harder proposition. At least with this idea, what you have left to do, not what you’ve done, is placed at the forefront. That’s huge!
Still, the overall goal is context. So long as there’s a purpose to your actions, you won’t mind the doing it, even repeatedly. Does anyone complain about pressing W over and over to go forward? But aything that breaks the illusion must be eliminated or at least hidden away. The trick I’m proposing here is just another way to keep our eyes on the prize and not on the grind. It still won’t fix the exhorbitant amount of time necessary to obtain Ascended gear but that’s another issue…hahahaha!
Whatcha think?
God bless!
Not bad but the grinds still there! For someone like me I look at dailies as somthing if I have time I’ll do regardless of how its formatted. I just don’t like being made to craft personally.
Really no one has any idea on how to fix this? Everyone clearly sees an issue though. Then why not make simple suggestions like I made?
MMO Players: Excellent at finding problems. Horrible at finding solutions.
Here’s my horrible solution:
- Ascended gear is the final tier. Period. You can not address this issue without having a final tier. They plan on increasing the max level anyway…there’s no point in adding more and more tiers as well.
- Add the vertical progression from GW1: Titles and associated PvE only skills that improve with each title tier
- Bring back the design-a-weapon contest from GW1 (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Design-a-Weapon_%282007%29). Add the top 10-20 weapons as a low % drop on champions (0.5%-1%). Imagine having 10-20 new epic weapons added every 4-6 months…Let the community do the work for you
- Added ascended crafting recipes (in the works).
- Add tokens to dragons to turn in for unique back pieces, lodestones, and aqua-rebreathers.
- Add mini-games. This may not seem important, but there needs to be non-combat related content Jumping puzzles are one example. We need the rest that were promised prior to launch. Hell, simply adding GW2: Farmville would give people something to do while chilling. MINI GAMES PREVENT BURN-OUT
Wonderful suggestions!
In general do you think more skins + getting stats easier is a good idea? or not?
Keep in mind a solution makes both side of the equation happy =)
(edited by Revolution.6301)
There are really no suggestions at all? This approuch is suppose to be civil and no bashing one side or the other.
This game clearly has two different kinds of people, those that like grinding and those that do not. Before I continue even though some of you know my stance on this I will not show it in this post. The community is clearly divided, something this is without a doubt a problem. However in spite of this problem and after reading numerous posts about it, it tends to boil down to people bashing one another. We as a community need to come to a compromise because we are all intelligent, decent human beings.
I have a few suggestions, these suggestions are just suggestions so they could be completely off the mark and might be.
1. Lets touch on Stat grinding. Clearly this is an issue that casual people have with the game so logically it should be done that stats are made easier to get.
But how do we balance this new change?
2. Skins. People love in any game to grind for great looking skins hence why people try their hearts out trying to get Twilight (me included). But it appears there is a complete lack skins (if you don’t count legendary) to grind for. My suggestion is to have rare skins drop at low rates from certain champions. Or have certain mats for the skin drop from the champion that have to be thrown into the mystic forge.
These are just two examples which could be wrong but I think they are a start to a better, happier community.
Just a note this is not a “is Guildwars2 a grind or not thread” please keep that in mind when posting. These are suggestions which Anet will probably listen to more because people are not attacking one another.
So what do you think? What stragies would make both parties happy?
Thank you for reading this and offering your thoughts on this.
Generally people seem to be split, those that enjoy grinding and those that don’t. What ideas do you think could make BOTH crowds happy. I upcased BOTH because if you do somthing to one side, somthing to the other side must be done.
For example,
For those that enjoy grind: Increase skins! People love to grind to for skins! Just put the mats of the skin on different monsters (rare drops of course) and have people collect them (but not as hard as legendary)
For those that do not enjoy grind: Stats should not be such a grind. The grind should be cut by 3/4.
In that example not doing are there more time skins But people who don’t care about skins can get their gear.
(edited by Revolution.6301)
So I think the community as a whole would like to know if Anet is going to do somthing about this.
Ran its cores? Ran its coures I’m assuming. Do not dimiss my argument. I realized what you did there and that is another logical fallacy if I may add. If you truly believe this thread has no point then don’t comment. Simple.
Ran its coures? Ran its course I’m assuming. Do not dismiss anyones argument.
nice attempt there but I didn’t dimiss anyones argument? Failed comback.
Try again sir.
If you add up the total difference then there would be a difference in someone who has ascended and doesn’t.
To any who say its ‘small’ sure over 1 piece but add ALL the pieces and suddently its not small anymore. And GW2 combat system is a bit deeper then normal but its not deep enough to ignore it.
In Dark Souls if you really get down to the grit of it, if you and your pal had equal stats but your armor was say 50 levels (in upgrades) apart but you were a generally better player you could win. Thats how people are able to beat the first boss you fight (if you choose not to escape) and win. But in GW2 the combat simply isn’t that deep.
Imo if GW2 had the skill customization that Gw1 had then maybe you could further argue the later but thats a ‘what if’ scenario which sadly does not exist.
These dailies are neat but are sorta boring. Why not just change up actual game mechanics and convince us through them instead of the overused daily system to play older content?
Its funny how about 90% of tyria is ignored because once your 80 and done your hearts there is no reason to ever enter those areas again.
Its one tier of gear that’s really not overwhelmingly more powerful than the last with alternate options to aquire it being implemented.
I honestly found Borderlands 2 single player action/rpg more of a gear treadmill.
Compare it to WoW where your starter welfare epics were so far removed from the raid gear that you would have to farm lesser raids every week praying for a drop before you could experience the end game.
The only restricting mechanic is AR which is needed beyond lvl 10 fractals, however you can experience all of the content without it in the same gear you crafted/bought the day you hit 80.
It’s all in your head.
You’d have to be ingornant of this game to not see an issue Or you play 3 – 5 hours a day and yeah I guess for those that have that much time its not an issue at all. But for those of us who have a life outside of this game it is. And WE were the targeted market not you, check any interview with Anet and we were who they were targetting.
And stop comparing this to WoW. Its like comparing apples and oranges -redundent and silly.
You can only call it a true geartrademill when there is more then one new set as things stand there is no trademill unless you think a one step is a trademill action. The big problem with most of the mmorpg forms is that ppl only part-lee understand what they are saying when they use buzz words. They can only tell you a small part of the idea and try to use it to label something that they see has that small part in it too. We could label the person story as a type of trademill but its not a true one just only bits of it are like a true trademill.
At this point is just ppl adding in buzz words to make an argument seem more then it truly is.
Your argument when a merry-go-round fallacy type. You essentially used the same information twice trying to confuse the viewer as if you brought new information to the table.
And to finish I ask everyone who is against How long do you play everyday? 3, 5 hours? Since my day even if I tried wouldn’t allow it.
So your best counter argument is the say my is flawed but not saying why its flawed? I gave you a reason.
“And” fractal just to get the gear should not take much longer then 1hr a day and now with the new ways to get rings and necks should only take at worst 30 mins a day for the stander daily run.
There ARE things you can do to make thing easier to get but ppl are instead going out of there way to post why they cant do it on the forms vs just simply doing it.
Here here is 1 flaw.
“You can only call it a true geartrademill when there is more then one new set as things stand there is no trademill unless you think a one step is a trademill action.”Okay fine I will tell you.
First off tell me how this is logically sound or valid. You can’t since its neither nor.I see your point of view i think your argument as ran its cores.
Point being that this game has not hit a trademill for gear this comes up every few weeks and nothing every comes of it. The major thing that every one must deal with is that there is no stopping any of this set from coming out so i am not sure what the goal is here.
Ran its cores? Ran its coures I’m assuming. Do not dimiss my argument. I realized what you did there and that is another logical fallacy if I may add. If you truly believe this thread has no point then don’t comment. Simple.
no no dailies, no get laurels
what is problem? No Laurels, No Ascended Amulet (for now).
Got it?
CoolNo ascended amulet, no game?
You dont need ascended gear to play the game at its best.
Got it?
CoolThere are also runes and armor available only through dungeon vendors. I dont see many people crying about not being able to get them because they dont do dungeons.
Dailies are just another option in this game. You dont need them.
Got it?
Cool:)Its like complaining about not being able to recieve a quest reward if you dont do the quest. Simple logic.
You dont need ascended gear to play the game at its best.
You dont need to wear any gear to play the game at its best.
In other words just be naked. (Hope you understand simple sarcasm)
Got it?
CoolDailies are just another option in this game. You dont need them.
Ascended Amulet.
Got it?
CoolIts like complaining about not being able to recieve a quest reward if you dont do the quest. Simple logic.
Its like saying hey Pvpers if you are not at least a 70% Pver then you aint gonna get any rewards. Simple scenario.
Got it? Its not rocket science.
Cool
Too Funny and Too True.
Terrible idea which adds to the grind which further breaks Anet’s maneifesto.
How is it grind? 30 dailies or days for 1 item? Really? And its not like this is a cosmetic item its a STAT item. Wait didn’t they say that stat grind progression wasn’t suppose to be big well this seems big and since it does what I stated it break their maneifesto.

To me it seems he wants 2k free. Since laughably it will take him/her less time to get the abstract ready and do the ‘experiment’ (if you call it that) then it would to make the 2k since it takes forever to make that much money.

If they had not made the ascended gear have higher stats I would say that the naysayers are correct but they did. That means it has better stats then the exotic, that means it’s a higher tier.
It’s poor opinion on the part of the naysayers to claim that those stat points won’t give people a particular advantage because even if it were only 5 points of vitality per piece that’s ten pieces which adds up to alot of vitality. It’s called math I do hope people are familiar with that concept of addition before they come on here claiming everything is perfectly fine.
I’ve posted this image before but apparently people need a reminder. This is exactly what’s wrong with ascended gear and people are lying when they are saying these stats don’t effect combat in any way.
Even people who simply do pve exploration or open world events would benefit from these higher scores.
NOW if they left the stats at exotic level but gave them an agony resistance….that’s completely different, they would no longer be higher tier gear to grind for.
Common sense exists in this forum?! IMPOSSIBLE!
This entire argument proves my point early on. This community is split. There are those that love grinding, and other that would like to be reasonable and others who hate it.
There are ways to make all 3 crowds happy.
1. Stat grind -there needs to a fix so people are not grinding their lives away to get the stats they want -this includes the new ‘ascended’ gear grind.
2. (to balance the above) more costmetic skins! Put a few ‘rare’ drops in dungeons for skins (that have no superior stats to others). People who love grinding will happily try to their hearts content to get these skins. You can also apply this to certian champions that apppear throughout Tyria. Now people who love to grind can camp these bosses and get their rare skins and be happey with them. Also these provide wonderful goldskins.
3. Dungeons -the amount of time to get a full set of armor is silly. Cut the requirments in half or refix the who 60 tokens then 20 tokens ideology with sill cutting the amount of tokens need instead of half by a quarter.
4. Legendaries -these need to be ajusted for everyone. Generally the time it takes to get one is outrageous. I’m not saying make it easy but cut the time by a 1/4 at the very least. Even then for most people who can’t play around 3-6 hours a day it will still take a year or more.
These are only a few suggestions. But if they were implemented (which could easily be done) everyone is happy and no one is annoyed anymore.
I guess everybody missed the memo where they actually did state very clearly that there would be more progression in terms of stats on gear, just no new tiers of gear.
Mike O’brien said: ““I hope we’ve been clear that Guild Wars 2 is not a game with virtually no stat progression in it like Guild Wars was.”
And Chris Whiteside added: “We have never said there would be no vertical progression. We do intend to focus on horizontal, but we will have vertical progression moving forward with the focus on zero grind and a very low power curve.”

A little is fine, but what we have here is a monstrosity. You cannot deny this.
This community seems split by the mentality of grinding and not grinding.
There are those who love spending hours on end in FOTM and dungeoning and those that are fine with spending a few in these places not 30+. Interestingly Anet once stated many times how in this game you wouldn’t grinding for stats, and only grind for cosmetics.
In my opinion stat grinding is getting way out of hand. Fotm is a clear example of this, money grinding for stats and one could even argue dungeon grinding (since it takes in many cases over 30 runs to get a set).
Anet once also stated that they were against gear treadmills and now look what we have? With more promised to come! Personally I would be fine with them breaking their manifesto say a couple of years in. Perfectly fine on the condition one could get the ‘new gear’ just as easily as previous gear and with many different methods at that.
Anet the community you attracted to play this game feels lied to. I for one play GW1 and loved it. One of my favourite parts was NOT grinding for stats. I was content on grinding for cosmetics but even that ‘grind’ you gave us so many different options.
As of now we are generally stuck with doing A, B or C.
A being grind for gold in areas like the Tunnel in Orr.
B doing FOTM forever and ever…
C is the option of becoming an investor in the economy and hoping for an okay turnout on our investment.
