I wasn’t in the Dragonbrand zerg you noted so I will not answer for them but if they left you, a Ranger, unattended then you reap what you sow. If that means you got 122 kills great. But I will say that you, personally, a single Ranger, was not responsible for melting that zerg.
Situational awareness, lack of, loss of focus, unattended, luck, bad luck, no luck, skill on Rangers part + any number of other factors contributed to your 122 kills (unconfirmed mind you). I’m not calling you out per say but I will say that there is the main fight, there is target assist, and then there are the supporting members, You, the Ranger, and thief’s, who’s job it is to prevent what you did from ever happening.
That is no different than me joining my daily PvP match yesterday and being totally left unattended to destroy any and all players. To me, ignorance is bliss and I felt like I was on cloud 9. To the others, I’m sure they left that game thinking just like you or the OP. kitten Rangers with range + rapid fire. kitten needs to be nerfed…
the point was i as a ranger dealt considerable damage and supported my zerg by crippling and immobilizing foes using #4 #5 muddy terrain and stealthing and blasting entangle before popping back behind the bridge and resuming fire
i auto for 4.5k damage on non heavy armored players and about 2.9-3k on heavies so im sure my hits were indeed affecting quite a number of players thanks to piercing shots. and no im not bragging about being a pro or anything as this was my first time wvwing as ranger ,forgot to explain non rangers could not approach me behind the zerg behind the bridge thanks to my superior range

I, kinda like the OP, used to comment on thieves. I too decided to play one and have been for some time now. Pay no attention to many of these delinquents. Especially those who say things like “Gonna necro staff all day long”.
Thief skills cost initiative and initiative takes time to come back. If other professions, had this system, then I’d like to see someone spam necro staff 5 if it cost 7 initiative to cast. In addition to this, you can’t have two of the same mark.
Originally the game was suppose to have the energy system used in GW1 and the new profession coming out will make use of an energy system. So the request is not unreasonable in the slightest.
The initiative system would bring to other classes what it does to thieves. Better use of skills. If all you do is spam skills because you have the initiative to do so, then you won’t get very far. You will find yourself out of initiative and left to only using utility and auto.
Yet on a CD system, if you use a skill simply because it’s off CD then you will find yourself without the skill at a time when you need it. So like the thief, you won’t get very far.
Between the two, the initiative system is more forgiving. Yet in both systems the best thing you can do as a player is what you do already as a player. Use the skills at the opportune time to make efficient use of them.
cant really say waiting 12 seconds for initiative enabling to use any of your 5 skills is the same as having to wait 20-30-50 seconds cooldowns
No joking, I got hit by a 10k ranger autoattack once. It hurted. ( I still have no idea how he did that. Even with sig of the wild, sig of the hunt and moment of clarity, that’s one big auto attack)
Then I came on the forums, complained and.. wait, no. I just dealt with it and learned to pay attention to what was around.
as theres no explanation of the fight i can assume he stacked might with elite and bloodlust with offhand then had fire and air sigils on bow then used signet of the wild wich gives stability and 25% damage as well as he used his knock down and interrupted you wich gave him opening strike wich grants 150% damage
A specialization that utilizes offhand sword, Swashbuckler for example, would be 100x better than a “Sniper” specialization. I mean…seriously, this “Sniper” specialization talk is the dumbest thing I’ve heard in GW2.
At least with offhand sword, if they do it properly, it can offer a very interesting play style. A stealth-less play style.
Imagine a S/S:
Dual skill: similar to Whirlwind. It will grant a slight evasion frame, a mobility (similar to HS spam), AND it will be skill shot based (meaning if you suck at aiming in the heat of the moment, you will do less/no damage).
Skill 4 can be something similar to Twisting Fang. However, with some changes..like: usable while moving and applies inflicts cripple and vulnerability. This will allow the offhand sword a bit of control over enemies movement.
Skill 5 can be a defensive skill like Counterattack. The counterattack itself would briefly stun the attacker and do minimal damage. However, if a counterattack does not trigger, then the skill would cause a blast finisher and apply a short duration protection buff. This way, for more defensive and stealth-less plays, thieves will have more defensive capability to balance the lack of stealth.
The lack of stealth from off-hand sword would pretty much negate all stealth based skills (Backstab, Tactical Strike, etc.) being used, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still use utilities and combo fields to enter stealth.
For D/S dual skill, it could be something like a blend between Dancing Dagger and Shadow Shot with 2 parts to it. For the first part, you throw your dagger (exactly like Dancing Dagger), crippling the enemy. The second part is based on activation, like Flanking Strike. The second part shadowsteps you to the enemy and does a sword sweep that knocksdown your target.
Finally, for P/S dual skill, it could be something like a quick dashing skill. You overload your pistol with gunpowder and shoot backwards, knocking down anyone directly behind you, and slashing any enemies in your dashing path.
The possibilities for unique plays is boundless and very active, compared to a…oh let me sit here spamming rifle 111111 and hiding at range cause I lack reaction based play.
instead you’d have a 333333 or 5555555 spamming evade and counter or knockdown thanks to initiative system

OC has short cd but it has its downsides :

knocks user back
hits 1 target
its the only defensive skill rifle has
slick shoes
all it takes is for the other player to simply not get hugged b y the engineer as the range is lower than melee attacks
has no offense capabilities at all
its not a nerf its a balancing fix skills will work fine as long they used in intended ranges
currently teleports/shadowsteps are exploited left and right you can even use them from behind walls wich was a nifty exploit i did on my thief shadowstep with infiltrator strike then shadowstep back inside the building leaving enemy clueless and unable to harm me lol

forcing “optional” grinds on players to extend the game’s life then do the same with the expansion is simply not enough
what reason would i have to not simply use my money wisely and go play whatever new better better optimized game comes out next example: Black desert

i hate pvp and i ve found myself doing pvp for 6-8 hours a day at times because i ve done everything else to boredom and have been cursed like many others unable to get a precursor so i guess i ll need to grind for when the expansion comes out i craft the precursor then grind even more to craft the items for the legendary and then craft 1 legendary and i need 2-3 per character so multiply that by 7 combine that with the grind for ascended gear and multiply it by 8 and there you see why grinding is ridiculous to some

Flamethrower not attacking my target like it wont say obstruccted or evaded or miss or numbers nothing
Fortified Turret shields not activating at random times happens mostly to the elite crate
some skills going into cd without activating nor being dazed or interrupted or anything , normally i would say its lag but i cant when all my other skills work fine .

in order for engineer turrets to be effective and have the aoe buffing trait an engineer must have to sacrifice 2 whole traitlines

for the most part i dont see whats wrong, lol if a player form any profession gets focused and jumped by 3-4-5 players and killed its ok but if it happens to a necro clearly the necro is underpowered?
I think everyone, except ANET, has realized that cele has been OP for a long time. Instead ANET took the easy way out, and tried to change might stacking.
They really need a balance team.
Cele is not op what is OP is conditions hence why condition bunkers have been rampant and Resistance might balane that out so who knows
theres also player skill as i run a Power bunker build and still beat necros mesmers and win some 3 v 1s by predicting what the cheesebuild runners will do thats how overused the meta has been that i can tell when an enemy wants to do something
Engi: least played class in gw2 if you consider all aspects of the game.
Anet: well let’s buff the crap out of them, nerf other classes and put them on daily every second day to improve statistics.
Anet doesn’t realize one thing: engis are not popular because they are thematically boring and they look like crap. Would they have so cool looking spells, epic turrets with lazors (asura cannons look cool for example), awesome looking backpack and not that hobo sack and actually had high burst/sustain in pve for speed runs, more people would play them.
Buffing them to the point where it is just play engi or don’t play game will just cause players that don’t want to switch quit the game/migrate to other games….
Look at thieves: i am sure that despite all nerfs that been handled out in almost EVERY SINGLE PATCH so far a lot of people still play them. Why? I think of 2 reasons:
- Assassine/ninja/killer/hitman and co. games (there are countless Ezios in gw2 lol)
- high risk/fps like gameplay
- maybe not sparkly spells but they often involve cool acrobatic movements, sound effects and are just stylish …bottom line this game is a RPG = role playing game…. not many want to play some nerdy guy with tools looking like rusty tin cans…
@Anet: stop buffing engis, make them visually/thematically appealing :|

The actual range in a vacuum seems op but when you look at the ranger class and mediocre they are now you are really exaggerating to say long bow rangers are op. They are only strong at very low levels of play. It requires lazy play by there opponents and no awareness of sorroundings. A lot of points on most pvp maps don’t even give you close to 2000 range los straight to the point. The difference between 1500 and 2000 in a lot of circumstances would be no different.
why do rangers need the 2000 range to begin with ?
because by your logic engineer’s mortar should have 5000 range as it leaves the player completely immobile and unable to use utility skills
theres several reasons having such ridiculous range is broken in rangers only
1 ranger’s gain 30% damage by simply being a 1000 range distance so not only they gain ridiculous damage but they do so while having twice the range of all game classes as not all have 1500 range
2 what makes rangers hard to counter at times is their pets sure you can have a reflect but once you get feared you ll be knocked back then rapid fired then knocked back by the ranger and finished
to this day i see no one giving a valid reason as to why rangers would Need 2000 range people already complianed that engineers were overpowered because they had 1500 range on slow glowing arcing low damage grenades you avoid by moving to the side why is this diferent on rangers ?( before someone says they are aoe rangers have piercing arrows both hit 5 targets)
4, im not hating on ranger but when i am hitting for 4k auto attacks without might stacks from ranges no one can reach leaving no counter play i clearly see theres a lack in fairplay . its as easy as sending pet for cc or distraction pop up the signet of the wild and bam 8s of 25% extra damage ontop of the 30% gained from being away and stability .
and the 4k value is with pvp stats , so you guess for how much i hit in wvw , so far i ve hit at tops 14.4k damage with rapid fire and havent bought scholar runes nor gotten damage sigils like force and bloodlust.

dont buff or nerf them simply fix their range wich is supposed to be 1500 traited yet the actual effective range is almost 2000 range, somewhere around the 1900s.
i think baner skills are ok, However i also agree that banners need some enticement to hold onto them like grant protection to the holder (4s every 10s ?) as banner skills replace player skills
i just stop pvping when i start getting premade enemy teams of nothing but celestial condi builds
had an enemy server rush our keep with over 8 omegas several times and we defended each time with nothing but 4 ACs and a catapult so they are counterable as long your server isnt brain dead
3 days is all it took me to make and get a ranger to level 80 in 3 more days i made a guardian a warrior an elementalist and a mesmer and they are levels 25,18,21,12 i’d say leveling is pretty darn fast if you know how to do it and dedicate yourself to doing it .
my main gripe is the new trait system overcharging skill points and gold
all i see is people crying cuz all of a sudden their free win builds require skill to beat others

it almost feels like they took my game id and have locked it to their database or something because i am whispered even when i am chilling at home instance or quest instance and hence why this became such an annoying issue

You gotta love it when you run Bomb bunker engineer end up fighting 4 guys from enemy team your team arrives at wich point their help is more than welcomed but instead they all sit back and start watching the whole fight while enemy team has all 3 points captured, dint even bother finishing off the guys even when i downed 3 at a time
Can we get conditions Fixed conditions are getting out of hand when you keep bumping into nothing teams comprised of mesmer warrior ranger necromancers all running condition spamming bunker builds .
how can devs expect players to steer away from running berserker builds when the only way to fight condition builds is with insane burst as other options wont work since condition damage doesnt drop in damage .
Your entire team was pure glass? Boons and healing works against condi and the obvious cleansing,dodges,CC,range,stealth,blind,team pressure,reflect,condition transfer,team support.
Not sure any condi spec is popular right now not even corrupt necro or engi,saw quite a bit of vemon share and p/d thieves but didn’t last long. Conquest favors AoE bunkers or hybrids, zerkers or condi specs weren’t meant to be dominant.

I really scratch my head and wonder why Anet makes build that are centered around AI. In many games, competitive ones especially, AI are used as a supplement for a build or an extension as some call it. A build or class or whatever it is should not be centered around AI, it is bad design since it ultimately removes player interaction which is detrimental in pvp environment. If anyone plays league of legends and remember the yorick incident then you will know what I mean.
If Anets goal is to make a competitive scene then turret engineer needs to be gutted even if it isn’t top tier. This build is a perfect example of how not to balance in pvp. If however Anets goal is to allow anybody to come into pvp and have a blast owning people while watching tv then by all means leave the build alone. The second option is actually what Anet is doing and is the truth, if any random can come into pvp and have a build like this make them feel like a good player, they will stick around as a customer and even buy gems.
dont forget to get rid of mesmer clones Ranger’s pets and necro’s minions
So basically turret engi is easy to kill to all of the above top tier players but it takes too much time and effort and as such it has to be removed.

I’d rather Celest Engi get nerfed before turrets. Actually being OP is more of an issue to me than perceived OPness because its a strong AI build.

2 sec immob, 10 sec cd, instant, 1000 range verus 3 sec, 1 second cast, 25 second CD, 600 range on the class that’s supposed to lock people in and so on. Net Shots freaking ridiculous. With just a bit of condi duration its like a 20-25% uptime immob (assuming lands). I think that itself needs to be looked at. I tend to defend builds across the board but this skill alone blows my mind, even when I run Turret engi just for easy wins for the day, I can’t get past how insane it is.
if you actually read the kitten description you’ll see why hardly anyone ever complained about net shot, ever seen an engineer use a harpoon gun in underwter combat over kits? the answer is no unlesss they forgot to put kits
for the same reason net shot sucks the Projectile takes 2 seconds just to land on a target 450 range away and its a huge net that shouts Evade or block or Reflect me
the irony lies in the fact the net shot reflects at faster speed towards the engy than when the engy shoots it ,net shot does no damage and engineer cant attack while doing the net shot animation
i would gladly have net shot removed and have Blunderbuss land 1000 fixed base damage with 500 range anyday over net s hot

as i went to do some pvp
and facing some eles they kept spamming swirling winds to wich i had counterbuilt with tool kit but pry bar and auto attacks dint land at all dint even register as miss or evade or invulnerable flat out nothing face to face to ele and no i was not blinded as i also carry the googles with me
and no im not complaining i beat the eles in the end but this tool kit issue bothered me
(who knows maybe was lag, i have no guinea pigs to test things with so idk)

i do recommend you to give engineer a try despite them being inneftective in many aspects it is so far the most fun class i ve played

My problem with all the turret Engi’s that have admitted to just farming it because it’s a cheese build, is not that they do it, but that the build is so AI heavy and so AI strong that the turret Engi can just sit on a point while the AI carries them. In my opinion no class should have any mechanic where the AI is that strong. Look at other classes with AI similar to that. Spirit Weapons on Guardian, Minions on Necro…there’s a reason there are hardly any of them, cause the AI is bad and the damage isn’t there. So why do we reward turret engis for just dropping turrets and practically AFK’ing?
however all you see is cheesebuild necros cheesebuild eles and cheese build mesmers
turret engies are nothing against those yet no one complains about those .
Necromancers Mesmers and Elementalists are game breaking in pvp
Necromancers have both massive Direct and condition damage so basically they drop by slap people with 8 conditions and burst them in a second with high survivavility specially if shroud form is timed right
Elementalists have ridiculous damage, mobility and even more absurd survivavility
Mesmers stealth,teleport,clone spam and the constant 4-5 confusion slaps wich easily stack up to 20 ( i find it a joke people complain about turrets over this)
this past 3 days i noticed a significant increase in necromancer and elementalist players all running the same cheap builds and i expect them to rise even i will play as necromancer and ele myself seeing how effective they are
Turret builds are bad. You see a lot of them because it’s literally the easiest build to play and perform well and PvP is filled with casual players who just PvP to grind out their dailies and have no mechanical skill whatsoever. Nobody good at Engi runs turrets unless they’re trolling and even if they are, be thankful they’re not on a real build or they’ll wrecka your face even harder.

last night around 2 Am i decided to try the infamous turret build
results 90% of the players that faced me even in 3 v 1 scenarious Tunneleved visioned on me chased me while turrets shot them the whole time
of my 40 rounds only 4 warriors 2 minion necros and a guardian AoE crushed the turrets before going after me, rangers had no problem as they just sent their bears and spammed longbow on me from saftety same with mesmers
the build’s name says it all Turret Engineer Remove the turret and you got a defenseless engineer
ye we all know they suck in organized team q, point is there’s no organized team q.
They’re lame and not fun, they’re also too effective for the % of brain needed to use them.

Lets nerf:
Completely remove stealth from thieves and change the initiative system for cooldown like everyone else
Remove mesmer’s stealth and cut clone damage by half and make them unable to apply conditions
remove necromance’s shroud form get rid of minions and make them only apply 3 conditions maximum at a time
make ranger’s bow no longer gain damage bonus based on range and get rid of their pets
Every Profession has a cheap mode build or mechanic

Those who claim AI builds should never be meta or even a thing must realize that such a thing would require Ranger and Mesmer to be permanently disabled in PvP. Why? Both are designed around AI usage, dealing damage with AI and empowering the AI.
Changing the profession’s themselves so they no longer do damage using AI would be so hopelessly impossible to do without breaking them in every mode that disabling them would be the only cost efficient and user friendly solution.
AI is not the problem. People’s perception of skill, most notably their own skill, is the coreproblem.
That AI got less then 1/10,000,000 of your intelligence, yet you struggle to outsmart it.
Think, plan, execute plan. If you cannot think or make up a plan, ask someone else to do it for youI don’t think you’ve ever played mesmer or understand how it works if you’re comparing it to 10k hp uncrittable turrets. Mesmer clones/illusions die instantly and are easily avoidable, mesmers also die extremely fast.
mesmers clones and phantasms on the other hand shatter for up to 6k damage apply confusion when killed and shattered as well as the barrage of conditions while dealing massive direct damage how exactly are turrets superior to mesmer ai units?

the most kills i got were because players chased me blindly ignoring the bunch of turrets in the middle
however i started having trouble when teams started bringing warriors and guardians who dove into the turrets and wiped them quickly leaving me with the only choice of running away
turrets cant crit unlike mesmers clones so if you got a ranger you can clear them from a safe distance engineer is a middle range class and wont be able to defend against rangers even if the turrets are up theres only 2 turrets with 1500 range and one hits for 450 damage every 4 seconds
a turret engineer without turrets is a dead engineer so you guys must be really bad to be dieing to unguarded turrets
