katz, shortbow. even that is fubared right now because someone thought it would be smart to reduce the attack speed without compensating it with damage.
the auto attack was the shortbow’s main source of power, the other skills do less damage and are situational skills.
poison volley only does its full damage if struck from point black fyi.
you trade the tokens you get from dungeons at lions arch fort mariner for your exotic sets.
Sorry but it just doesnt seem dynamic or exhilarating.
Aside from the Claw of Jormag who moves from one spot to another…
These dragon champions… just stay put and look at you menacingly and sometimes do their breath powers.
They’re kinda… well boring.
Abbadon, in Nightfall had the same mechanic but he was not boring because he would be doing stuff that would hinder you from standing still and letting auto attack do the work.
Personally I’d like to see the dragons not being rooted to the ground, moving around stomping away at little helpless players, fly around in the air for a bit terrorize the outposts have players chase them down and not respawn every 3 hours in one zone but be randomized.
Tequila the Sunless can have dominion over tarnished coast zones.
The shatterer can have the blazeridge zones
The Claw of Yormag can have the shiverpeaks.
And NPC scouts will come running up to the heros in nearby zones informing them of the dragon champions arrivals and players can go take up arms against these menaces.
That’s what DYNAMIC is.
Right now, Dynamic events are like… ROUTINED Events.
Just before anyone starts trying to hijack this thread about strategy and bringing up the “Holy Trinity”, the Holy Trinity is not strategy, the holy trinity is a mechanic.
A mechanic in which your group has to be designed around that.
Guildwars2 is based on personal strategy and team strategy.
Personal strategy in the sense that you are responsible for your own well being.
Team strategy in the sense that you make combo fields and figure different takes on completing the mission. albeit some dungeons are badly designed with a simple mechanic of 100xhp mobs in which case the best strategy is for high DPS.
similar stats?
You know exotics are the base line gear of this game right?
You’re not going to get any numbers higher than you get with exotics.
Everything else past exotics is cosmetic skins.
This game isn’t about how good your gear is, this game is about how good your skills are and how good you look.
It’s been made clear since day one, there is no gear treadmill
Nothing so far.
Wow, Singaporean here but I never made the connection.. Yet it makes so much sense! Our emphasis on multiculturalism and multiracial harmony (there are four different national languages, including English) meshes pretty well with the whole concept of Lion’s Arch too. Totally sold.
Now you have
Seriously can we get a dev to verify this on how they came up with the name lions arch
At first when i saw the title i was like “yeah right”
…then I saw the enormous merlion statue in LA.
you might be on to something.
OMG its a merlion!
for those who dont know what a merlion is.

(edited by Rizzy.8293)
It was clearly inspired by the movie Hook.
Maybe the new Lions Arch, we’re talking about the old Lions Arch and how its got its name
Singapore is like Jacks of all trades from all over the world, so yea Lions Arch does feel abit like home when i first visited.
Singapore here
Thats what I thought too.
Singapore aka The Lion City is situated in South East Asia.
Whilst it may not look much like it today, 250years ago, Kryta was pretty much South East Asian Inspired.Cantha was Asian-inspired, not Kryta.
YES OF COURSE! Because Chinese are the only types of Asians!
My apologies.
Of course Elona is just African themed right?
Because Arabian and Egyptian… just another part of African culture.
Sarcasm.

Black powder rifles in RL take ages to reload.
[…]
So why does a bow shoot faster than a rifle?
Because a bow is faster to reload.Since you’re applying logic and realism and all, where do your arrows come from?
Since you want to be illogical, where do your bullets come from?
And my arrows come from my invisible quiver on my back, if you ever noticed a ranger shooting their bow they reach behind their heads for their arrows.
Ranger is about quality not quantity.
The short bow was a situational weapon relying on its auto attack for its main source of power and the rest were to control the battlefield in terms of snaring, evading and interrupting.
much like the greatsword, however the greatsword is truely lackluster in the hands of the ranger, most of the times you just hit 3 to fast move to the next target and let the auto attack do the rest of the attacks.
The longbow on the other hand is about control, support and trust.
You wont be doing as much damage on it as you would a short bow, but you provide debuffs which if you’re in a good team will take advantage of.
It’s not because he can’t, its because he doesn’t want to.
Rangers see the rifle as a lowly peasant tool requiring very little training to master.
Ontop of that Rangers are intune with nature, rifles are the product of industry.
Industry destroys nature, look at the Charr homeland.
And then theres some of you who say, well they use Spear GUNS.
Spearguns don’t use black powder, black powder wont ignite when wet, spear guns use compressed air, or in some of the art I’ve seen of the spearguns here, kenetic energy in the form of elastic strings.
You don’t give thieves great swords, why?
Because its big, its unwieldy and unstealthy, the complete opposite of what a thief is.
Same reason why you dont give rangers rifles.
Its the complete opposite of their lore.
And for people who argue that, well rangers can carry greatswords thats “odd”
Really?
Average draw weight of a longbow is around 100pounds or 50kilos, you think someone who can pull that much weight can’t carry a great sword about 2 -5kilos or 4 to 10 pounds and then decide later on hes going to learn how to use this weapon effectively?
And lastly the word RANGER does not imply one who attacks from RANGE.
A person who owns a huge cattle range is called a Ranger, does that make him a superb range tactician?
It means one who covers a lot of range/grounds.
noun
1.
forest ranger.
2.
one of a body of armed guards who patrol a region.
3.
( initial capital letter ) a U.S. soldier in World War II specially trained for making surprise raids and attacks in small groups. Compare commando ( def. 1 ) .
4.
a soldier specially trained in the techniques of guerrilla warfare, especially in jungle terrain.
5.
a person who ranges or roves.
1 – 4 none of them indicate a master of ranged combat.
Number 5 fits what a ranger in Gw2 is.
So you’re telling me a person who can pull the draw weight of a longbow, which is about 45 – 55kg or 90 – 110pounds cant wield a great sword with an average weight of 1 – 2kg or 2-4 pounds.
Right…. :|
Someone knows how to read wiki. How cute.
Except the strength necessary to swing a greatsword effectively is entirely different.
So, you really don’t know —-- about what you’re talking about. And I wasn’t even suggesting the Ranger can’t lift a greatsword.
Just that, in my own opinion, Rangers wouldn’t choose to use Greatswords. It doesn’t fit from what I’ve gotten from the advertisements, lore, etc..There’s nothing inconsistent about a ranger using a greatsword.
The Ranger’s selling point is the whole longbow ‘Barrage’ skill and ranged tactics. Stuff like wielding axes or swords aren’t what they show off or tell about when talking about the Ranger.
It just happened to be there. (And before you mention it, most people thought the whirling axes defense was a Warrior skill when I showed it to them. Funny, eh?)The Ranger using melee-weapons at all doesn’t even make much sense. (Aside from the dagger, cause what kinda hunter/ranger doesn’t carry a knife to cut meat or mark checkpoints with.)
A majority of newer players I met who have yet to play the Ranger don’t even know this profession can use Greatswords. Why?
Because it’s not consistent with the image of a Ranger from other literary works and games. You are just seeing what you want to see. Subjectively so, I might add, the entirety of your post is your personal “interpretation” without any serious basis from the game’s advertisements or other players’ genuine first-hand input.
Now whether or not this needs changing, is up to ANet.
I, for one, am in support of the former – It totally needs changing.
But if they decide to “break the mold”, so be it. However, that means they intentionally being inconsistent, in order to be unique. That’s how uniqueness is done. That doesn’t change the fact that the Ranger is terribly inconsistent with the concept of a “Ranger”.
Ohhh RIGHT.
Because one can carry a sword doesn’t mean one knows how to use a sword.
Logic much?
Being sarcastic by the way.
You’re under the assumption that rangers are RANGE-rs .
Rangers are not RANGE-rs, rangers are people who cover a lot of RANGE as in lands, hence RANGErs.
A guy who owns a cattle range is called a Ranger, does that make him a superb range tactician?
who knows.
Gw2 Is a casual game.
Depends on how casual a person is I guess.
If I left, id probably come back for the holiday events and stuff
The Native name for Singapore is Singapura, which means Singa = Lion, Pura = City/Port in malay.
Singapore aka The Lion City is situated in South East Asia.
Whilst it may not look much like it today, 250years ago, Kryta was pretty much South East Asian Inspired.

As evidence in the architecture in the pictures.
Lets look at the other similarities.
Lions Arch – A fishing town which is a main harbour port for Tyria
Singapore – Was a fishing town which had a main harbour for ships passing through Asia
Lions Arch – No Native Lions to the region
Singapore – No native Lions to the region either.
So was the name Lions Arch inspired by Singapore?
thinking about going back to my thief after i gear him up.
It isn’t that we’re upset because they “dared to nerf us”. It’s that they nerfed us and didn’t bother fixing any of the important bugs.
Oh, and if Ranger is a “beginner” class, explain why Guardians get a heal for their entire health bar, explain why Mesmers have clones and phantasms to tank damage for them, explain why Necros have DS and minions, explain why Warriors have the highest health and armor in the game, explain why Engineers have all those turrets and kits, explain why Thieves have all their stealth skills, explain the massive amount of skills Elementalists get, and explain why every class isn’t just handed a sword and told to “get out there”. This game is about variety. Every class has the same potential, just different ways of doing it. Rangers have pets to tank for them because they don’t have naturally high health and armor, they don’t have stealth, they don’t have a million minions or full heals or a secondary health bar they charge by attacking, they don’t have turrets. And you know, pets aren’t even that strong to begin with.
Please, do go on about how easy-mode Rangers are.
Rangers are beginner class bcause it doesn’t take much skill to survive and explore PvE. That’s mainly what I meant.
But I also mean that in PvP/WvW you don’t have anywhere as many playstyle options.
Mesmer phantasms are weak as hell and disappear after every kill, not a tank, simply meant to confuse. But they have some pretty nasty PvP skills. Eles have the largest selection of skills of any class and have 4 elements they can switch into during battle. Etc.
I’m not an expert but I watch friends who are good and you can also watch vids on Youtube (make sure you aren’t watching beta pre-GS neff ones) and I’m in awe of how fast and easily a good player with one of the other classes can kill.
Rangers can only wear down an opponent since they have low burst damage. Most of my kills come from sniping an already wounded player. Kinda lame.
I’m learning an Ele now and holy crap, dual dagger played right is a killing machine but you need to concentrate like hell and my fingers are moving like crazy.
So thats thats what I mean by Ranger is a beginner class especially in PvE.
Didnt know interrupting things, having to control a stupid AI, positioning myself to flank the target to get the full potential of my basic attack and trying to line up targets to mass snare with one arrow was a lack of skill.
My bad, I apologize for thinking that rangers required skill to be good rangers.
Cant say I enjoyed bow as a Guildwars player, there is no Guildwars ONE.
Slow attack speed, only good for taking out turtles in Fort Aspenwood and sniping people.
As far as PVE went, Spear + beast mastery was the way to go, good condition stacks, high DPS, and self sustaining energy regen
I never played Guild Wars 1, but I really like the pet control in Guild Wars 2. For instance, when I can see a boss is about to cast a damaging attack, I can instantly call the pet back to me with F3, and then send in back in after the boss has attacked, with F1.
I would love to have some sort of utility skill set that is meant to improve the Ranger as a marksman. Like a skill that says “15 sec. Improve the range of your ranged attacks by 500”. Or “5 sec. Attacks that hit at 900 range or more has a 100% critical chance”.
Thats doable on guildwars.
And often in guildwars if you specced beast mastery youve got an industructable tank
Ill join you, but can I still play my ranger for dungeons till I gear my thief up?
No idea. We were told last night they would look at it, and then its been crickets.
I’m guessing the employee that said they would look into it got a scolding about getting our hopes up….
That Employee happens to be JonPeters aka Game Designer
Why does a shortbow shoot faster than a rifle anyway? From the video I’ve seen it still shoots fast just not spammable fast.
Rifles =/= sub machine guns.
Judging from the looks of those rifles in Gw2 they’re black powder rifles.
Black powder rifles in RL take ages to reload.
Using a bow, does not require feeding black powder down a tube, sticking a ball barring down said tube and stuffing it down tight with a rod.
So why does a bow shoot faster than a rifle?
Because a bow is faster to reload.

Can we allow players to rearrange the order of their weaponskills?
in Suggestions
Posted by: Rizzy.8293
You are meant to learn skills in a specific order, it just makes sense to not allow you to reposition them. Besides, nothing is stopping you from re-binding the skills to different keys. That 1234 crap isn’t very ergonomically friendly anyway.
because keybinding those skills in a different order applies to ALL your characters.
Then they would be called Hunters.
Rangers according to Guildwars Lore are people who are intune with nature and harness nature’s powers.
Rifles are the product of industry, industry is anti nature, look at the Charr homeland.
The only ranger allowed to use rifles are, Chuck Norris.
Texas Ranger’d
Warriors longbow skills are the envy of most rangers.
TheZeus: I’ve killed many people with my warrior’s rifle.
After clearing a majority of their hp with my melee skills and they start running, I use the burst attack :|
Normally gets them good.
So Rizzy if i change server i will not loose my guild?? And be able to join dungeon runs with them?
And what about World vs. World, and the Power of the Mists bonuses?
What ostracized said.
You can do anything with your guild, aside from PVE (currently since guesting doesnt work) and WvW, but you can still dungeon with them, talk with them and so on
Pretty much sums it up, I mean there is grind, I dont mind if Anet had been honest with it there will still be grind but whether I find the grind enjoying or not is what makes it less grindy, for a while I enjoyed doing dungeons they were fun you get to know your teammates learn the styles that other professions bring to the table, until that one day they decided to put in DR into dungeons and mess it up for a whole lot of people.
That turned a fun activity into a grind, luckily they’ve more or less fixed this issue.
But yeah the game isnt as revolutionary as it claimed to be, its just streamlining a lot of aspects found in other MMORPGs, Guildwars that was revolutionary.
Levels 1 – 20 were “tutorial” stages where you learn about the game mechanics and after that, you get your base line gear and enjoy the rest of the story, that’s what they should have done with Guildwars2, not the 1 – 20 but make it so the max level is at the end of your “tutorial” stage and allow weapons to have different skills that are swapoutable.
The game is still good for me, but in terms of being revolutionary…. meh.
Its actually the only game I enjoy dungeoneering as it takes out the long wait for specific role classes.
Guilds are not server based if thats what you’re wondering.
I tax my guild 1 gold per day.
Theres currently 30 people in the guild and 3 founders, thats 10 gold per day for each of us.
I just want to put this to all those people talking about ranger weapon damage being far below that of other professions:
Your pet makes up more than the difference, other professions do not have a constant additional damage from their f1 skill, the lower damage from weapons is to compensate for this, and rightly so.
On topic:
I have noticed much more of a decrease from Sb than I was expecting considering the difference is in milliseconds
Heh My pet doesnt hit very often vs moving targets.
SHM = Shake My Head?
I would like the list thanks
All these explanations about what the Ranger is “suppose to be” go down the toilet as soon as a Greatsword-wielding Ranger walks through the door.
I don’t care what you guys got against rifles, but as soon as I saw that they could use Greatswords, a big “wtf” light turned on inside my brain.
Let’s be honest.
Theme-wise, the Ranger is just a totally inconsistent profession.
So you’re telling me a person who can pull the draw weight of a longbow, which is about 45 – 55kg or 90 – 110pounds cant wield a great sword with an average weight of 1 – 2kg or 2-4 pounds.
Right…. :|
because theres broken things in the game which prevents them from having fun therefore venting here and making themselves heard hopefully get their issues rectified.
And before anyone says “Blah blah blah less complaining, not the game for you, should have done your research” 1) these people paid for their games 2) they have the right to give feedback 3) its not your call if you dont agree with the feedback, its the developers call.
i take down mobs at range just fine…faster than any other class, i play around with
you got a pet, can boost your longbow to 1500 range and reduce the longbow-skills cooldown by 20% with trait skills
you also got your secondary weapon to assist – my choice: sword(get range)+horn(crit-buff)seems like just another flame-thread to me…please get more information before posting flame-threads
Piercing arrows are a lot better.
So, you’re complaining that this patch apparently made your class the worst rdps class….but it would be ok if another class was the worst rdps class?
I ask that because obviously someone has to be the worst at something. So which class did you have in mind, should be the worst rdps of the ranged classes?
Oh and what exactly is a ranged class because, well, rangers can also do melee and have pets and all that? Would be nice if you could clarify what you meant there exactly?
What hes trying to say is stop nerfing things that arent broken, Leave the ranger’s shortbow the way it is.
And stop trolling.
Even JonPeters is looking into the matter with the significantly slower speed that the shortbow is having right now.
Its called, using the skin you want with the stats you want.
How is that unfair?
I transmuted all my Ascalonian dungeon gear to have beserker stats.
Why you gotta diss rangers?
Engineers are another botting class too.
And often the bots ive seen have normal user names
Is it just me or does the ascalonian shortbow no longer does the particle effects when drawn?
This is what I’ve been suggesting, LET US the player rearrange the order we want our skills to be in.
The only rangers that are allowed to hold rifles and pistols is Chuck Norris.
Texas Ranger’d
Because rangers are elitists who uphold the old way.
Rifles are weapons of industry and destruction, which is against the way of the ranger who is intune with nature.I have already had a long discussion about this in a similar thread, so I’ll just make it as short as possible:
- There is absolutely nothing anti-natural about a rifle. A rifle can be made of materials that are all found in nature (wood and metal). Even gunpowder is made of elements found in nature (sulfur, charcoal, and saltpeter). And the fact that a rifle is loud does not make it anti-natural on its own. Animals can also be trained so they aren’t scared of the gunfire sound.
- Whatever the “original ranger” is suppose to be like, has no meaning in Guild Wars 2, as it’s a completely different fictional universe, with its own rules to write. Implying that fantasy has some kind of rule set, that’s suppose to be carried over from one story to another, is just ridiculous.
- It makes sense that Rangers, in Guild Wars 2, realized the benefits of a rifle, just like we did in the real world when rifles were first created. Why would Rangers be stubborn about it and go “oh, I can’t use this weapon to my benefit, because I like nature magic”?
- Hunters in real life use both rifles and bows for hunting. Each weapon has it’s own advantages and disadvantages. What you choose is simply a matter of preference.
- If we only had weapons in the game because we needed them, it would be a pretty boring game. Why have daggers when we have torches, or greatswords when we have the swords, then?
We’re using Blackpowder and flintlock technology in here from the looks of the weapons in Gw2.
Shooting arrows is faster than reloading a blackpowder gun.
And if you’re going to use a real life comparison of Hunters using Bows and Rifles
Shooting a bow also requires more skill than it does from pointing and shooting a rifle.
Archers spend years mastering their skills to be able to pull the draw weight of a longbow and to shoot a short bow with deadly accuracy and speed from horse back
Black powder rifles and crossbows were invented so that ANYONE can use them with relatively little training.
And the original rangers from Guildwars2 aka the Rangers in Guildwars will explain to you how intune they are with nature and how they harness her powers and spend years in isolation in the wilds hunting and taming wild beasts.
Guns are a product of industry, the destruction of Nature, look at the charr homeland, its this industrial fort of steel and smoke, its not fitting to the ranger lore.
If you want to use a rifle because rifles are cool, by all means use a warrior they get to wear heavy armour and have way cooler rifle skills or wait till anet comes to a realization that it makes sense for thieves to hold a rifle as well.
Rangers and Guns dont mix
Just as Hippies and guns dont mix.
(edited by Rizzy.8293)
Nothing to say about Path One, pretty straight forward.
Path 2, I remember a certain developer saying we’re supposed to have atleast 15k hp and are expected to fight mobs that spawn whilst magg is trying to blow up the gate. Well I have 14khp, decked out in beserker exotics with eagle runes, even then the Mobs have too high hp that coordinated attacks cant take em out in time before someone gets chained KD and dies. Can you lower the number of mobs that spawn if we’re supposed to take them out because right now the only viable method of doing this is to run in circles in pairs and chain spawn, and frankittenhats a bad design.
Path 3, Quite like this one, cept for the hallway with bombs.
Im playing from Asia and I have roughly 300 – 400ms lag in this game, that hallway leaves very little room for error.
Whilst most players in US or EU start running the moment they see the flashing bombs go out, I have to start running when the light is at its brightest because in reality thats when the light has just turned off, would it hurt to give players a little more leeway on the bombs. At least until you guys have an oceanic server
(edited by Rizzy.8293)
I have a level 80 ranger … before people wonder, the shortbow NEEDED a nerf.
Probably 90% of ALL bots are RANGERS using SHORTBOW. Why do you think that is? There are literally PACKS of them running in every zone. Why? Because it was TOO GOOD. When it is so good that it becomes the bot standard you had better expect the balance bat to fall your way.
Be honest … DPS wise you could easily get away with a Bear and skill 1 (auto attack) and do nothing else and down almost anything. Oh no we might have to work 2-5 into the rotation now. Anyone crying about a nerf should be forced to play an Ele for a month for perspective.
Because the Ranger is the only profession with a permanent pet and the short bow is the only viable Ranger weapon and it is a ranged weapon. It has absolutely nothing to do with it being overpowered.
I know it isn’t something you want to do but … I did say “be honest”. Gold sellers are in it to make REAL LIFE MONEY. There is a reason they were choosing the ranger. Any class can be used to bot (pet or no pet). The Ranger was just too good to pass up … like it or not. No amount of spin will get you out of that logic trap. Sorry, if that helps any
I’m sorry, but I honestly don’t think I’ve seen a single Ranger bot. That isn’t to say they don’t exist – enough people talk about them that they obviously do – but as for me, of all of the dozens or more bot I’ve seen, the vast, vast, vast majority have been guardians. Why? Maybe survivability, I don’t know. In any case, it’s simply nonsense that Rangers somehow have some kind of monopoly on botting.
Dont forget engineers.
flamethrower pack 1Spam + turrets.
