Ever play GW1? Man the classes and builds put GW2 to shame. GW2 is more like mmo lite.

I played GW1 constantly from May 2005 onwards. I honestly like GW2’s professions better. GW1 consisted mainly of “If you’re not running Dragon Slash or Discordway, you lose.” That’s nowhere near “putting GW2 profs to shame”.

I already know how biased you are so I’ll simply tell you that your statement is 100% incorrect and wish you luck using the very, very limited skill set in GW2 while pretending it’s better.

This is where The Secret World trumps guildwars2.

They took what made guildwars awesome with the “build system” and implemented it according to your equipped weapons.

Now if Guildwars2 had that, where weapons had different skills and you can choose which ones you want to use and make a 5 skill weapon build, Gw2 would have been perfect.

Why?

Caudacus Manor 5 Thieves.
Swapping between Range and Melee.
A combination of Sword Pistol, Dagger Dagger, Shortbow and Pistol Pistol.

Thieves are excellent at stacking blinds, 5 thieves can time it right without voip and just visual cues, when smoke fields go down, someone creates a new one. This allows for thieves to come up close and do massive damage dagger and aoe with swords.

Arah 5 Rangers
3 shortbows and 2 longbows
3 greatswords and 2 axes 1 warhorn
5 Rangers with 5 pets effectly makes it 10.

Good pet control, excellent timing with healing spring, Condition damage stacks with Shortbows and 2 Longbows for CC and power.

We were basically able to keep mobs at a good range while we kite around them

Is the holy trinity still needed?

Seems to me, its just liked I posted in another thread…. its “ranged” favoured.

It doesn’t matter if you like Healing, or Tanking (as I do), if you have to play “Kiting-Ranged-DPS”.

Also, as for the broad comment “…its called support in this game..” …. to get rid of the so called holy-trinity (which for anyone who has been playing mmo’s longer then when swtor was released) will know… its actually 4 (tank, healer, support, dps)
but… here is the key fact…. NOT ALL CLASSESS HAVE THE SAME ROLE BASED SKILLS…

Take for example “Warrior” – cant tank (cause tanking doesn’t exist anymore in this game), cant HEAL (except myself very crappy like), cant put down any combo-fields (but do have finishers), and while I can range…. – why would I roll a warrior if I wanting to act like a ranger??

Sorry… 5x warriors will have hell in the dungeons….
or at least the world longest and most boring kite-fest.

but don’t let the above fool you, still enjoying the game, at least the open world and wvw stuff ; and just dinged 75, wearing full set of 70 exotics with superior sigils etc.. and having a blast out there with the dynamic events…

but dungeons… went in one… wont be going back..
so once I hit 80, not sure what I will do…. :S

Not at all, the thieves I played with, at first we ranged, and right after the doorguard we realized how we were synergizing as a group and started to pull out our melee and started meleeing, even when we didnt have smoke screen up we had enough mobility to go in attack and go out before another powerful swing was taken at us.

On the Airship at Arah where hordes of risen started coming onto our airship, the 3 rangers with greatswords, myself included jumped into the mob clustered them and went swing happy whilst the other longbow and shortbow ranger AOEd with poison volley and barrage, not to mention they had piercing arrows as traits and therefore arrows were aoeing by default.

Melee is just as powerful if not more powerful than ranging, but if you stand still and melee expecting to exchange numbers, you’ll die.

Playing a thief in Gw2 was no different than when I was playing a rogue in Wow, Always moved trying to get behind the target.

Playing a Ranger on Gw2 a whole lot of difference than playing a Hunter on wow, I barely melee on my hunter on wow, on Gw2, every chance I get to melee, I take it.

I don’t know if its “needed”, but it sure is more fun than combat w/out it. As an 8 year MMO healer, I sure do miss having a role I enjoy playing. To me, DPS is just boring.

Its just a difference of opinion on what’s fun & challenging.

We call it support in Guildwars.
As 2 of the rangers were part beast masters our healing springs were more powerful than the other.

You can play support in Gw2 but dont forsake your dps, thats a huge mistake and you’ll be grass.

Ive done healer in many MMOs and most of them are boring imo, Champs online was the only one I liked aside from the fact that their powers are pink, not only was I able to do decent DPS but I was able to support my team, most of the time they didnt even need my help for healing.

@Fiennes

I know how to play a thief thanks, my point was I can’t play my way… you know, unless I want to die constantly. I’m sorry if wanting to play a melee class is wrong… I don’t think it is.

HAHA Thats funny, you think Vanilla wow is easy XD

Im sorry you’re a horrible melee thief, I really am bro

I typically love pve and dungeons but without that trinity I just can’t get into them as much…

It’s like you said, GW2 promotes killing the target together but not working together to kill the target. I couldn’t have put it better myself. And I was one of the people saying trinity sucks, blah blah, when GW2 wasn’t out yet… thinking it was going to be so amazing without having to look for a group anymore.

Boy was I wrong. I love GW2 but I do miss the trinity.

[Attached Picture]

Yeah I’ll pass, self survivability and coordinated attacks are the way to go.
Depending on a single player to keep you alive with a huge menagerie of skills is just redundant.

So…. you think self survivability and coordinated attacks don’t exist in holy trinity???
My rogue in WoW had tons of self heal, evasions, sprints, vanishes, you name it. I was pretty kitten self sufficient, the only thing I couldn’t do was actually tank a dungeon boss if it was current content which sucked.

What makes trinity suck is looking for tanks and healers, not trinity itself. Some people enjoy DPS, some enjoy tanking, and some enjoy healing. We should have that choice. Remember “play your way” ? Yeah… didn’t happen. I can’t even play melee on my thief or I get wtfpwned in 1 shot by bosses that aren’t dodged (I know, kitten dodge, just an example, and dodge isn’t unlimited), FORCING me to go ranged to survive.. again, playing MY way? I think not.

It was one of the biggest selling points and it failed horribly in my eyes. I thought support builds were going to be at least 10 times stronger than they currently are. Party healing is pathetic when mobs can 1shot people.

Basically, current trinity sucks kittens, kittens Kittens KITTENS! Kittens.

Kit tens

Kittens.

Really?

Because I could tank Princess as a rogue in wow, because our warrior tank was a kitten who decided to train his 2 handed sword in the dungeon itself doing no damage at all.

The amount of evasions I did whilst doing high dps was more than enough that the priest didnt have to burn all his mana on me.

But without the priest to back me up, would I have been able to hold Princess on my own, pretty much, but sooner or later I’d die and would need another priest or druid to rez me.

So do I think the holy trinity sucks?
Yes, why?
Because like I said, it makes no sense that I have a huge menagerie of skills and still I depend on another person dedicated on another specialty to heal me because bandages work out of combat.

And you can heal others in Guildwars2, we call it Support.
I can drop a well called HEALing Spring as a ranger and shoot my arrows through it and send regeneration to the frontline, elementalists can do the same, engineers can wear medikits and guardians pretty much own support.

Play the way you want? sure you wanna be a healer, go support via traits, pump up that thing called healing power.

Just remember, if you wanna be support you dont forsake your dps, the moment you do that, your team starts dying, the best way to negate damage is to eliminate the damage source.

Sometimes I drop healing spring even when I dont need it to heal people infront, they dont depend on me for a heal but as a good player and a teamate is in trouble id help them.

So holy trinity and a dedicated healer? no thank you.

And when we say tank in guildwars2, we dont mean, go stand and soak damage like a sponge, we mean go grab aggro and distract the target, thieves can do this effectively, sword rangers too.

Also on my thief, I dagger dagger, its called skill 5 and standing behind a target.
Sometimes I go Sword Pistol, again Skill 5, I ran Caudacus’ Manor with 5 thieves, a range of Dagger Dagger/ Sword Dagger/ Sword Pistol/ Pistol Pistol and Shortbow.
No problems at all.
Just saying.

If you’re having problems staying alive, its all you.

Protip, the main power for a thief is to blind and to vanish.

Why arent thieves allowed to use rifles?

in Thief

Posted by: Rizzy.8293

Rizzy.8293

Most ranged shots are single stepped skills.

The rifle’s first shot would probably work like a rangers long bow.
More distance = More Damage.
Stealth = Sniper shot, 1200 range, 2 second cast heavy damage, thief immobilized

Skill 2 = knee cap is a good suggestion.

Skill 3 = Head Shot, the less health a target has the more damage it does 6 int

Skill 4 = Distracting shot, half the normal damage, but interrupts target: 5 int

Skill 5 = Take cover, gain 3 seconds of stealth 5 int

Simple, to do what it said “Do what you want to do for end game”

Progression is a vague term, in terms of gear, progression should be cosmetic to balance pvp and pve, guildwars did it right along with other games with pvp in mind.

What I want to do is dungeon and explore and upgrade my gear with new looks.

Losing 21 silvers before the new patch was punishing enough
11 silvers for a whole fix of every single item broken, is atleast acceptable

I agree that this is painful, but it’s not really consequential. 21s at level 80 is a few minutes of “work”. It’s just irritating, not meaningful. And that’s actually the reverse of my problem.

Those few minutes don’t MEAN anything except a few minutes. If you hadn’t died, what would your reward be for those same real-life minutes spent?

Nothing. 21s doesn’t actually mean anything positive in this game. That’s the problem.

Losing 21s sucks. Gaining 21s is… just gaining 21s.

See what I mean?

I understand the problem, if its Arah exp you’re talking about where a path takes 3 hours minimum with 60 tokens at the end, still not as bad, but recently I did Arah for the first time and it gave me 30 tokens and everyone else 60 tokens, that was bs.

Like what symke said, why can’t we have both FUN and GEAR, instead of being forced to choose one or the other like what everyone here seems to think?

Because:

Colin Johanson

Fun impacts loot collection. The rarest items in the game are not more powerful than other items, so you don’t need them to be the best. The rarest items have unique looks to help your character feel that sense of accomplishment, but it’s not required to play the game. We don’t need to make mandatory gear treadmills, we make all of it optional, so those who find it fun to chase this prestigious gear can do so, but those who don’t are just as powerful and get to have fun too.

Simply put you have your FUN, and you have your GEAR. The fact that it doesn’t give you more superpowers doesn’t mean it’s not there.

The real question is: Why do people insist on asking questions that have been answered over and over again?

Rarest loot =/= gear progression. There is none in GW2.
So we’ve reached lvl 80, bought/craft lvl 80 exotics immediately with that amount of gold we’ve saved or gotten so far. And…

That’s it.

While GW2 provides for tonnes of cosmetic armors, cosmetic progression =/= character progression. So at level 80, there’s nothing for your character to progress on.

Before we jump on the chicken and egg argument and someone starts saying “hey, gear doesn’t matter, you can still have fun”. That’s exactly my point; why cant we have fun AND gear at the same time?

Because PVP games are designed with balance in mind, its not fair to have high numbers with every new expansion and leave the old ones behind. Take Champions online, City of Heroes/Villains and DCUO, all games with PVP in mind, is there even armour aesthetics? No, you have little gadgets that +stats and armour is purely cosmetic.

Have they balanced PVE and PVP, for the most part, Id have to say Champions Online did a fairly good job.

Whats guildwars 2 doing?
Ensuring that people who enjoy PVP from the first game are still able to enjoy WvW without having to worry about someone else having better gear than them by allowing base line armor to stop at exotic and everything else is cosmetic.

What am I doing now?
Working on a dungeon to get some parts of gear to further maximize my visual aesthetics, do I have to? No but I WANT to.

Before the 25th, everything in PVE costs way too much and rewards way too little, atleast now you can still make a profit from doing stuff in PVE.

Im not going to go so far as to say Gw2 is perfect, its not, it needs to find the balance between PVE and PVP still and a lot of PVE can be improved

Post patch 25th sept, things are getting better, aside from the DR system which now flags me for no reason

If you’ve designed a product without the consumer in mind then you’re a bad designer.

And I guess you’re going to insist they did exactly that because the game doesn’t appeal solely to people like you, right?

Screw what the rest of us who actually knew what we were buying think. If it don’t please the Rizzmaster, it don’t please nobody.

" I know its a lot to ask of you but I do wish you’d educate yourself before you spew"

And I quote.

Just because you don’t know what baseline gear means and think Factions armour is exotic when infact its rare doesn’t mean you;re an expert in Gw2 mechanics. It means you’re the opposite actually.

So “go research the game before you buy it” and start spewing crap to people.

-Necromancer with Well of Blood.
-Engineer with healing turret or bandage kit.
-You can stealth allies and they will get regen under stealth as thief if traited.
-There are Mesmer traits that allows you to shatter clones to heal allies.

Every single profession can be a healing based profession if you create your build correctly. If you play correctly, you can save your teammates from death using those healing skills.

Agreed. So what would be the harm in adding one more class to the game that can do everything else everyone else can do but a little differently?

Because what you’re asking for is a dedicated healer class that does nothing else but watches red bar beyond anything else and depends on his team to keep everything off him.

Do you know why the Cleric aka “healer” in Dungeons and Dragons wears mail armour? because hes designed first and foremost to kill in the frontline. Thats what the guardian does.

Dedicated healers are not the goal of Anet and its game mechanics.

Clerics in dnd wear plate btw last time I played. And I asked nothing of the sort for any dedicated healing class. You could add a monk to the game that kills with magic or mace or whatever and it can still have good healing potential just like any other class. Though because it is a monk it`s benefit from +healing would be alittle better then everyone else. That in no way makes him a dedicated healer or brings the trinity back anymore then a guardian does. The monk would just go about it a little differently.

A little differently as in be more focused on healing stuff?

Yeah no, the guardian does that just fine and often when guardians do that and sacrifice all their dps, teams start dying in dungeons.

As I said before, this game is not about one person carrying the entire team, its about the entire teams ability to work together in negating damage and eliminating damage source.

Do you really think someone like a monk is any good in Gigantus Lupicus’(mid boss of arah) second phase where he shoots AOE all around that almost kills people?

A proper team in this match up would be so spread out that you cant target another player in your range, having someone like you suggest means being close to each other, you know what happens when you cluster for his second phase?

WIPE

His second phase depends on your ability to dodge his red circles and DPS to bring his HP down, not on some guy who wants to fix your wounds and 5 people focused on this aspect > 4 people and one guy too far to heal anyone else.

The way of the monk and assassins are over.

For some odd reason you keep thinking I want the monk to be a full time healing class in the game. You probably read all the posts I made in this topic and completely misunderstood every single one of them because you read only what you wanted to see. So I will explain this one last time so you can understand. Even then you probably won`t.

A monk could be added to the game for people who like that type of character. the monk will be able to survive and deal damage like everyone else. He will have heals like everyone else but he will have slightly higher healing power bonus because of the fact he is a monk. That don`t make him the dedicated healer of the game. It makes him another class for people to play that supports allies in different ways then the current classes do. What`s wrong with that? Why is everyone so against variety? Because technically, we allready have every class we could possibly need for the game. Does that mean we don`t need or want something later on down the road to change things up and try different things?

So whats the difference between a monk and a guardian then since both have traits to +healing power.

Well they aren’t very that good. They still don’t provide the umph im talking about. I think the major problem is survivablitiy of turrents. They are just too easy to kill to be worth their cooldown. Thats why I suggested doing these buffs to allow them to do more damage and have more utility before they die, which usually isn’t long. I think the healing turrent should stack with self healing to help with them survive. While smoke vent is good, they have to be close. In WvW this isn’t going to happen much unless you place it at a chokepoint. Usually chokes are being spamed with AoE so it wont last long. Net turrent however is amazing. Combined with rifle its major CC. The Rocket turrets is not that good. I’m not sure about thumper, but again its another case of them having to be close. im trying to find ways to make them good in all situations. PvE, sPvP which they are currently pretty good at, and WvWwhat i concentrating on in this.

Well theres your problem, You’re putting turrets as frontline bait, turrets belong in the back, like Pyre Fierceshot said about the seige devourers in the front, good place for scaring people off bad place for actual defense.

And if you’re soloing using turrets its your job to hold aggro while they support you.

And smoke vent for flame turrets where it releases a puff of smoke to blind foes near it?

Waterblast from healing turret to remove conditions…

I dunno about the rest :S

But yeah what about those?
Dont they count? Oo

I mean you also have a self repair thing with your traits that allow turrets to heal themselves….

Stop trying to fix dungeon runs, I want my 180 tokens for my complete runs, not 77.

-Guardians offer a wide variety of healing.
-Healing shout warrior or Banner warrior.
-Water attunement elementalists
-Ranger with healing spring is one of the best team healing skill.

Ive played a couple of healers in other MMos in my life, Wow, Champions Online, Guildwars

And I have to say yeah, all healers do is pay attention to red bars before anything else.

And they cause major problems in PVP. why?
Because most of the time, most DPS classes cant out damage the healing done by healers.

Take wow for a example, pre BC it’s always confuzzled me, as to why as a Warlock, I have weaker shadow spells than a shadow priest.

I am a person who dedicated my life to learning dark arts whereas a priest is something that cant decide if they wanna kill or heal and they have more damage than me as a shadow priest.

In Guildwars, the moment you join random arena and your team has a healer, chances of winning go up, infact Guildwars was called HEALwars by many of the pvpers, because most it all boiled down to your healer being able to keep his blue bar up when keeping red bars up.

In Champions Online, the telepath is one of the more powerful classes able to go toe to toe with the paid archetypes along with the behemoth (the tank)

Is healing over powered and simplified?
Id have to say, Yes.
Does it have room in Guildwars2 a game that was first for PVP and then PVE? No.

If you want to play support, thats cool by all means, but DONT forsake your DPS, survival is up to an individual and you help each other by doing your part.

Best way to negate damage is not to take damage and eliminate the source of damage, acht.

Not to have someone heal your red bar, you can do it on your own.

If the concept of “Don’t stand in the fire” baffles your mind, then I suggest improving your gameplay till you realize what that means.

Id just ignore people like that, if you cant respect my input as input and refer to them as whining, I don’t see a reason to reply to you, just ask a moderator to remove his message.

But back to your topic, there are random chests in the norn area which dont require keys to open.

Would be nice if they had something like treasure chests like in nightfalls.

As far as guild housing goes, they’re already looking into that I believe, and targeting…. really could use more help, its too easy to lose a target and calling a target means you have to manually click on the target instead of ctrl + clicking the icon like the old guildwars.

You’re right about the characters though but the Destiny’s Edge voices were done way better than the other in game characters.

Towards the enkittenpt hearing the same womans voice in her annoying accent in 3 people, Captain Jayne, Merry and Priestest of grenth, I mean Caithe and Eir are the same people but youd ever guess.

Its like they ran out of funding for voice actors towards the end, and traeherne was memorable but only for the wrong reasons.

Tybalt on the other hand was good a change, as a player of guildwars Ive always resented the charr for what they did to Ascalon, however tybalt got me over my charrist views and saw that not all charr are bad, sure most are still but some are nice and like fruits.

He will always be remembered.

Why arent thieves allowed to use rifles?

in Thief

Rizzy.8293

The way I see it, a thief is your average joe, unskilled in heavily armed combat, lacks the upper body strenght to pull the draw weight of a longbow or lift a heavy greatsword no real magical powers or anything of that sort.

Now rifles arent that heavy… and it doesnt take massive trigger finger strength to pull a trigger, hell you can pull the trigger of a pistol you can pull the trigger of a rifle.

So why can’t a thief use a rifle?
I just dont get it.

I can get why rangers dont use them, because we’re rangers, and are somewhat elitist about what weapon is better and stuck in the old ways, but thieves are opportunists and would gladly use any weapons they can at their disposal and rifles would fit right in there.

exp reward is more than enough, I constantly find myself commiting avatar suicide out of sheer boredom (diminishing returns flagged me as a farmer for no reason hence cant do dungeons), if someone was smart enough they would wait by death scene for another death to rez me.

and im not even trying to power level anyone but imagine if someone was trying to.

so as to your suggestion, exp reward is more than enough, giving them more than that for incentives just makes it more vunerable to exploits the next thing you’ll know there’ll be gw2 suicide clubs.

Upscaling Would Be Good

The whole down scaling system makes sense but what doesnt is theres no upscaling.
Not when you’re alone, when you’re in a party with a friend you should be able to upscale to their level or map level whichever one is lowest, that way you and your friend can both enjoy higher content than having the higher level party baby sit the lower level person all the time.

60 – 20 – 10?

i dont think you’re bugged if you ran the same path.

the first run is supposed to give 20 + 40(first of the day) second is 20 and after that diminishing returns if you dont do another path.

bugged is when you do all 3 paths and get this, 30 – 20 -2

Again, the problem is never the consumer, when it comes to design. Your job is to make something that makes money, and keeps making money. If your consumers decide to take their money somewhere else, you don’t stab your finger at their back as they walk into the sunset and tell them they don’t know how to enjoy your product. That’s your failure. You are the failure. Not them. You are the bad designer. If you can’t respond to that failure, all the worse for you. The consumer will just move on, leaving you only with a collection of fanboys eager to stroke your ego and agree with one another that everything is perfect, except for all the problems they can’t bring themselves to address.

The problem with your analysis is that it assumes a customer not liking your product makes you or your product a failure, when it could be just as simple as a bad fit (not every product is for everybody).

ANet has never said get on board or get out, but by the same token just because they didn’t get every single human on the planet to like their game doesn’t mean the capitulate to their desires. It just means that you except that the customer didn’t purchase the right product for themselves, either from lack of knowledge or because of a smooth talking salesman (buyer beware).

Customer expectation is a problem the designer can’t fix and is not their problem. Unfortunately we live in a society where the consumer has been given to much power in the seller/purchaser relationship. Granted this is in reaction to when the seller had to much power, but imbalance the other way never makes up for the original imbalance.

If you’ve designed a product without the consumer in mind then you’re a bad designer.

Is there progression in guildwars2?

Yes, theres leveling
Yes, theres equipment treadmill, though not as much as an mmo like wow which keeps coming up with bigger numbers, the gear treadmill in gw2 is comparable to that of City of Heroes/villains, Champions Online, DC Universe Online, which are also games focused on pvp and in guildwars gear progression stops at exotic.
Yes, theres gear aesthetic progression.

are these the things that motivate people, to some people yes.
As for me, Id prefer to get max level as soon as I can but in no way do I rush because as soon as i finish one form of progressio i can take on the easier ones like gear aesthetics

But however the main thing that drew me onto guildwars2 was the game mechanics, which, sorry to be so blunt, didn’t fully live up to expectations.

Boss fights are cheap mechanics which often = 100xhp and 2 – 4 shot kills.
Trash mobs in dungeons follow the same mechanic
I mean there are some unique fun things in dungeons like carrying a corrosive light orb and having to toss it at another party member, but those are far in between.

If i have to compare the mechanics of guildwars2 to any other game ive played, it would be diablo 2. You can work together as a team but ultimately survival depends on how good you are and how good the other person is at causing and negating/evading damage.
