28k?
wow :|
and the average player has 14 – 18k hp, that really is a lot of damage.
However,if those kind are your main problem, someone cleverly suggested 4xSuperrior runes of Earth. If you are not glass cannon as well this will finish your one-hit problems.
Yes, I’ve read that thread. If I remember correctly the thread also states that there is a ~42% chance that protection doesn’t trigger during the Cloak and Dagger->Steal->Backstab combo.
DesertRose – thieves always have access to steal – 90% of thieves use it exclusively as a shadowstep. If every thief has access to it then it means you will have to learn how to counter it. How is that? By what I said – dodge and start using your spells.
You do know that the infamous Backstab Thief build uses Basilik Venom and that you can use Steal during Cloak and Dagger? If timed correctly Steal and Cloak and Dagger will hit at the same time making it impossible to dodge; at that point only a stun breaker can save you from the subsequent Backstab. The only way to counter this combo with a dodge is to distinguish the Cloak and Dagger animation from an auto attack animation (from a range up to 900) and use a dodge BEFORE the Thief uses Steal.
About PvP though – you will automatically be in a team. Expect there to be thieves so expect to stay closer to your friends. If you are alone we will kill you and there is very little you can do about it – but if you have a group of friends we can’t do much at all. Sure we can jump in and slash at everything nearby but we don’t have the armor or hp to survive for long at all – we will die quicker than any other profession in those circumstances and any effect we have in doing so will be minimal.
Lets ignore that in PvP there are plenty of situation where you have to be on your own, how exactly does standing besides an ally protect me from the Backstab combo?
So why don’t you bring a stun breaker?
I never used Assassin’s signet till recently, apparently because in a certain dungeon I do getting knocked down is a common thing and that one stunbreaker is a life saver, and I started using it in wvwvw, and guess what it works wonders against not just thieves but hammer warriors who throw me around like a rag doll.
If you stand still vs ANYONE you are going to die.
How does an Ally save you?
Simple while you’re incapacitated they would attac the thief and use a CC if they have any.
Some warriors are just that bad, yet at low lvls warriors in melee dungeons get pwned hard, as levels go up you can go melee happy all the time.
Did I mention the guy was 80 and in COF gear?
I think everyone hates fighting against mesmers, yet they complain about thieves and their stealth.
But majority of the time I pug, I get teamed up with a warrior using a rifle.
Not that I’m against warriors using rifles but what I don’t get is… why even at range are they afraid to open the attacks?
I mean just yesterday, doing AC, in the graveling tunnels, I was standing infront of a warrior waiting for them to come in range, I moved back acouple of steps, he moves back, so I tried to move back somemore to see if he would stand infront of me, nope he made kitten sure he was behind me.
Me a squishy medium armoured meleeing thief… he wanted me to pull the aggro on myself before he would open fire.
Not that I have a problem with being main target of aggro from pve mobs as i can dump them easily with a quick stealth but what puzzles me is why play a profession with high raw armour and high raw health when you’re not brave enough to open the first attacks.
Do most warriors just range whilst pugging in dungeons?
1. Everybody but Thieves, huh? Also, false, the difference of a few thousand helth is one heartseeker.
2. So you want people to trait exclusively to counter Thieves? And false again, not all classes have these traits and some of these don’t even increase defense in any meaningful way. Dodging doesn’t work against invisible enemies and against Steal into CnD+BS, remember than evading a BS doesn’t bring a Thief out of stealth, he can run at you and spam BS, even double dodge won’t grant you enough evasion time to outlast a 4s stealth.
3. Wow. Should we also learn to open our chakras and release our ki to slow down time? Seriously, listen to sounds? In a chaotic PvP environment, sounds that indicate that attack is already in progress and you won’t be able to dodge in time with lag anyway, even if you somehow hear it? And even if you heard and evaded once, that’s not gonna help you.
4. False. Stealth stomp is much better. Thieves can disengage and escape attacks extremely well, focusing one down is not a simple matter and is going to waste a lot of your time if you’re fighting a triple-dodge Thief or someone who will just stealth and WAIT for you to switch targets, then attack. CnD into HiS into Black Powder results in a lot of stealth time that can be used defensively.
5. Too bad damage reveal Thieves. You hit him for 2k, he instagibs you a fraction of a second later. Not to mention that it’s easy to time attacks well when you’re freaking invisible.
6. False. You don’t die in 2-3 AAs. And hey, didn’t you advice to spec defensively? A defensive GS Warrior hits for 600 with AAs. BS Thieves have 12-19k HP not 3-4k, that’s without any investment in Acrobatics, just use Knight’s Amulet/Zerker Jewel vs Zerker/Zerker, you don’t lose a lot of damage and can still instagib targets. Swinging at air is useful, but it’s easy to maneuver out of range and come back to attack when the enemy is swinging the other direction.
7. Again, telling people to spec exclusively to counter Thieves. Warriors, for example, have only two truly offensive melee weapons, that’s GS and Axe. Guardian has two true offensive weapins – GS and Sword. Axe/Mace Warrior is not any different from the popular Axe/Shield Warrior and is more effective against Thieves due to Shield Block.
I didn’t know learning the play styles of other professions and your own topped with learning how to dodge constitutes as speccing just to counter thieves.
I don’t know if you’ve ever played guildwars the first.
But back in those days, the mesmer had a very steep learning curve, not only did you have to learn your own profession but basically every other professions to learn how to counter them.
When to use Backfire, when to use diversion, watch for animations, when to use a rupt,, make sure you use diversion just as the targets spell is about to go off so they get disabled for 60 seconds.
Learning your own class and learning to counter other people is nothing new to guildwars the first or guildwars the second.

If at all it should activate slower so you have more time to dodge the Steal+Cloak and Dagger combo.
Are you kidding me?
1/2sec cast time is bloody slow for a DAGGER.
Try this, dodge when you get hit with a cloak and dagger and run away while counting to 4.
I have a ranger and a thief. I rather face a thief then a Mesmer. A skilled Mesmer is a lot harder and more annoying to kill then a thief.
I can attest to this.
It just seems like mesmers spawn clones of themselves all the time when I was on my ranger. No matter how much micro managing i did with my pet, making it target one of “mesmers” theres always another one ready to take its place.
Atleast with a thief, I hear the stealth, I do quick shot run around wait for 3 – 4 seconds and crip shot.
Uh, just no.
That would reduce the dmg of a pistol main hand by about 1/3 and no one is complaining that does too much dmg as an opener. Thief complaints are 50% L2P and 50% everyone always whines about the stealth class. Throw some culling in there are you have massive QQ.
I destroy every glass cannon thief I meet, they are so easy to counter.
Because the longer you can stay alive, the longer you can fight.
I know, its amazing how people stand still after being CnDed.
Dont even bother bother to run or side step, just turn around slowly waiting for me to reappear infront of them.
Another clueless Thief circlejerk thread.
Did you see the traits? Stuff like Infusion of Shadow, Quick Recovery, Opportunist? It’s possible to Stealth every 3 seconds and never run out of Initiative using CnD and only some of these traits.
Your HP is on par with Elementalists and Guardians. You also have a lot of HP regeneration and blind spam. One successful blind effectively adds HP and you can blind targets every 3 seconds or permablind melee targets.
Stealth has rendering issues. The engine can’t handle contant re-stealthing, resulting in Thief being invisible good 2 seconds after the Stealth ended.
You run faster than most enemies with Signet of Shadows or spammable Swiftness on evading (and that’s with Fleet Shadow being bugged and not working lol), also running is not an option in a point capture game, unless it’s the graveyard point.
And to the poster above me… we’re talking about PvP. Although the GS/Axe build on Warriors with Haste/Endure Pain is their only viable build and is arguably overpowered. Nothing like BS Thief, though, of course.
Oh alright, lets just remove all of that awesome single target damage and give us a ton of AOE weapon skills /sarcasm
And this isn’t the blind of guildwars, just spend an auto attack and you get your blind cleared.
Also signet of shadows? LOL you get owned by 3 signet thieves? :S
Thats kind of bad.
And your issue is the broken engine, not the broken stealth mechanic which works fine.
Why would you 30 critical strikes when your HP is so low :|
Spirits are still weak lol.
I took my thief out from the shelf and actually geared him up and im pretty much enjoying the playstyle more exhilarating and im actually contributing to my team more
Basically this.
Anyone can pve their way to get a Commander Manual without having any experience in PVP and go into PVP having everyone think they’re a battle hardened veteran when they’ve not faced the horrors of player versus player and lead entire teams to their death.
Commander Manuals should cost Glory or some other form of PVP currency as a testament of how much time you’ve invested into it and as a measure of your understanding of battle tactics vs actual players and not AI.
Why do people say thieves are op?
Do they not understand how initiative works?
It’s not an unlimited resource pool, HS spamming, good for the thief if he can save up all 12 initiative (without trait) to get you the required HP level to do the most damage to you 4 times. and then hes gonna have to wait 6 seconds before he can cloak and dagger someone.
How is this different than a warrior waiting on his adren to fill up to kill you off with 100b?
Stealth, its not even perma and often you see the thief stealthing, thats your queue to move it because something horrible is about to happen you to if you just stand still.
And if you don’t see it coming and get backstabbed thats probably if the thief is like me, he uses C/D on a target closer to him and then runs up to you knowing you’re about to die and finishes you off, its not cheap at all.
We got like the lowest HP of all the professions, it’s not that hard to kill a thief.
Even if he stealths you dont even have to run, just unleash a flurry of frontal or aoe attacks, stealth isnt something that turns thieves invulnerable.
I have full AC gear, like literally the only thing im missing is a sword but im debating if i should get it or not.
AC is hella easy, if you dye a lot thats… your problem :|
All I have to say is learn to dodge
a long grind costing many hours and much silver for repairs should be rewarded. cosmetic skins for gear … not a reward in my opinion. Why sign up for a cost sink and a money sink for gear no better than what you have?
To those who feel their valuable game time is worth cosmetics – more power to you. I see little value.
Oh right so you wish guildwars 2 is like the many other MMORPGs out there who reward players for their timesink?
And have it so they out perform other players not base on their skills but base on their equipment.
Sorry that’s not what guildwars2 is about.
If you want the cosmetic look, you get it because you want it, not because you need it.
If Legendaries were a tier above exotic and does not visually please some people then there would be some issues as they would NEED to get that item as well, gear is COSMETIC, if you WANT it get, if you don’t want it you dont have to get it.
You do not NEED it. what you need is skill based game play.
Yeah, I’ve run into this too, (some) people simply won’t believe you when you tell them that once they have the exotics they want thats it, linking stuff doesn’t seem to do the trick either
nope they really wont
perhaps because every medium set looks like the same, heavy armor sets are all bulky and when someone says (myself) we could have another couple of skimpy ones i get stoned to death by irrational haters, where only light sets (for females) looks good and i struggled to get one that looked decent and manly (for my mesmer).
im ok with aesthetic rewards but this game lacks aesthetics rewards.
before i get stoned to death again I LOVE this game i have an absurd amount of played time and i will keep playing but we need more aesthetic rewards.
I feel the same way about leather armour, they’re always some trench coat or some assymetrical fashion disaster.
But theres one set of armour i saw that I liked and I got it, I didn’t need it but it got it coz it looks nicest of all.
As far as the weapons go they have more visual aesthetics than armour, but since the short bow the kudzu looks like a unicorn that shoots rainbows I dont need to get it as a long term plan, now if the kudzu had 20+ more numbers then yeah Id be pretty kitten telling me I need a shortbow that looks like a unicorn and shoots rainbows
Visual Aesthetic Rewards.
Seriously, I mean there has got to be people from City of Heroes/Villains, Champions Online and DCUO who understand this reward mechanic for armour and weapons is just a visual aesthetic with standardized numbers (in the case of those games, just skins you get rewarded for).
Heres what I mean, I recently stumbled into a guild chat where someone was complaining about the hard to earn legendary and how its pointless because its got the same stats as exotics.
I tried explaining to them what visual aesthetics was and if you want it go for it, if you don’t want it you can still go make it to sell it.
And before long into the conversation, someone else comes in and says Legendaries have higher stats than exotics, I face palmed at that point and pinged Twilight and an Exotic Greatsword from AC which have the same stats and was called a Troll.
So now being right and having facts backing up your claim makes you a troll.
Its really hard trying to explain to people the way gear works in Gw2 is if you WANT it you can get it, you don’t NEED to get it because it does not has higher numbers, guildwars2 is not a cookie cutting, number crunching, stand and slash game where you get rewarded with leet equipment for wasting your time on, its a game that makes you hone your skills and playstyle
With that said if the expansion adds more levels and higher tier gear I will flip a table
(edited by Rizzy.8293)
The Thief nerf is inbound, enjoy it while it lasts.
So i heard a lot of warriors are complaining about backstab coz they cant dodge :|
It’s been a fun 3 weeks guys, but I don’t feel like I’m contributing much to my dungeon runs on my ranger.
I can barely kill silver trash mobs by self anymore ever since the “Animation bug resolve” which is not to say I can’t, I still can, but it takes a longer time.
So I’ve decided to unshelve my thief and now that I’ve gotten him geared up with a shortbow… It’s kinda silly how I crit close to 1500 damage across 4 targets >.> compared to my rangers 800.
I mean sure the attack speed on the thief shortbow is slower and the range is shorter but the bouncing arrows effect makes up for the lowered speed especially in a big mob.
To all those who continue with the ranger path, all the best to you
Regards.
the class is incredibly squishy, i incorporate stealth in my build as aggro dump.
But like the 2nd poster said, some classes can barely stealth, Sword Dagger combo for example or anything with a pistol offhand.
Stealth is not the problem, it becomes a problem if you’re a nooby player who stands still, the moment a thief stealths on you just do a dodge, such an easy mechanic to counter.
I’ve come to this conclusion that most people in GW2 dont know how to play their class judging from all the warriors I’ve pugged with a large majority of them backline with rifles and bows and often wait for me a thief to open the attacks.
I like the ideas in this thread!
I really like the idea of using items instead of evolution though because then you’re guaranteed to get what you want.. however at the same time I feel like pet evolution in GW1 was a sort of meta game where you needed to play a certain way for your pet to “evolve” as you desired.. taking out the evolution and replacing it with items, although allowing you to get what you want faster, seems to cheapen the experience in my eyes :-/
Thats why I suggested Pet trainers to assure you get what characteristic you want from your pet.
Lions Arch’s name is inspired by Singapore
Rodgort is Trogdor spelt backwards.
I told you before.
Theres not going to be a dragon for the next expansion
Unless the Kuruvaang in Catha is corrupted again.
The next expansion is going to focus on diplomatic issues with the tengu of cantha who are now refugees in Tyria and strengthening the human numbers by reuniting Tyrian humans with Canthan humans before embarking on their journey to Elona to free that place from the Yoke of Palawa Joko and Kralkatorik and then going back to the North with all the new races and humans to beat Jormag
1. By the time I can afford cultural armor and buy it I think my journey through this game will be almost over (unless they release an expansion), so why do I wanna blow that much gold on something I’m hardly going to see after I buy it? IMO…I’d rather be able to obtain the look I want and then spend most of my journey in this game in the look I want instead of spending my journey trying to get the look I want.
2. If it becomes the pinnacle of richness, then everyone is going to buy it just for the prestige…so its not going to be unique just like FoW armor from GW1 became so common there was no point buying it for a unique look. Is ANet saying cultural armor is a status symbol?
1) Was this your reaction to new Elite Armour from Guildwars when they made the expansion, "But I want my elite canthan armour now!1! ". If you want the looks, spend money on it, work for the money, just because its a video game doesn’t mean you get everything handed to you, hell thats how real life works too!
2) FoW armour still to this day is a symbol of prestige even if its common, it meant something, You had the money to buy it or you had the skills to earn it.
Whats the point of lowering the cost for Cultural Armour and making it easily attainable?
In my opinion if Cultural exotics were cheap every tom kitten and harry would have it and ruin the prestige of owning one
it still costs 119g for a full set.
so u r saying every tom kitten and harry would have 119g?
If every tom kitten and harry had 119g, it should be 400gs at least!
Lets face it guys,
The only time we use the other skills is when the time calls for it.
2 When the target isnt looking at you so you dont waste the evade
3 When you need to get to the next enemy fast
4 when you need to block a high powered attack
-4 when you messed up your timing for the block and dont wanna waste the skill
5 to interrupt a foe.
So mostly on a ranger, you just let the Auto attack do the job
And according to a Game Designer on the Shortbow Nerf
" It was also encouraging just spamming 1 which isn’t the most fun gameplay."
And the greatsword fits the bill of a mostly not fun gameplay.
(edited by Rizzy.8293)
Took a couple of days to get debugging in on this. It is in fact a 40ms difference which equates to about 7% less damage when spamming 1. We made this change because it was creating some animation bugs to leave it where it was. It was also encouraging just spamming 1 which isn’t the most fun gameplay. If our data shows shortly that shortbow is now not effective we can certainly address that, but would do so by improving other skills on that weapon rather than by reintroducing the spam on 1 and the bugs that it was creating.
Um Jon, the other short bow skills do less damage than #1 and are for situational purposes.
Im not going to do a quick shot unless I need to evade
Im not going to do a concussive shot unless I need to interupt someone
Im not going to cripple someone unless they are chasing me or a priority team member.
I will spam 2 when I need to.
If your data shows that we do 7 percent less damage now then please make up for the damage loss by giving the shortbow 7 percent more damage.
As far as damage go, we dont have any burst damage, the damage from #1 was the main source of sustainable damage.
In my opinion if Cultural exotics were cheap every tom kitten and harry would have it and ruin the prestige of owning one
It’s called a dungeon finder, Something that Anet needs to put into gw2
So when your projectile doesn’t hit them, you still deserve damage?
It’s called an exploit.
People are exploting this bug as arrows “miss” when your target strafe side to side, when its clearly hitting them. -.-
still wouldnt say no to a sword offhand as a thief tho :P
i mean, if a caster such as the mesmer can dw swords… why not thieves.
Thieves should also get rifles imo.
And dungeon story modes are actually pretty kitten easy.
Exploration mode is a tad harder, but even pugs can do it.
Levels and gear dont matter as much as personal skill do.
Learn to dodge and watch for visual ques.
They COULD add in a new tier of traits without “adding more levels” and it certainly has nothing to do with “making people get more top end gear”.
Make a new tier at level 80 and allow a larger allotment of trait points.. instead of a max at 70 make the max 90 so once again you can only possible have 2 trait tiers maxed with 10 points left over to throw somewhere else.
I’m not saying this is the best idea to make character builds more unique and customized but I believe it’s an idea worth taking into consideration. To me, that’s one thing I’d like to see.. more customization of character builds.. whether it be through a new trait tier or larger trait tiers or more skills or more weapons.. although to be honest my favorite idea so far was to make it so each weapon skill slot had a few options instead of being just being set in stone.. i know the reasoning behind it but it’d be cool all the same :-P
This isn’t even a good idea.
As I mentioned in my post. New content in Guildwars is about new skill abilities, not overwhelming your opponent with more levels or traits.
Id like to hide my ugly armour and fight in my knickers
Change race?
No.
Change racial appearance yes.
See we don’t need dire or elder pets anymore…cuz we have 40 different animals that have their own unique stats & abilities. In GW, the only difference between most pets was whether they were elder or dire or playful….now we have blue moa, pink moa, raven, eagle, jaguar, fern hound, brown bear, black bear, polar bear, cave spider, jungle spider…….need I go on? yes, it was neat to tame a lvl 4 wolf and raise it to be your own. Only now if you tame a lvl 4 spider, it instantly becomes your level and always will be. Maybe it breaks immersion, but I like the variety we get now.
Your arguement is non sequitur
Guilwars has 36 pets.
This isn’t about quantity, this is about having the pet play a specific role to your build
Hence Hearty, Playful, Elder, Aggressive, Dire which werent about pet abilities.
And all tameable pets in guildwars were level 5
The whole point of Dungeon armour was that you get rewarded for putting your effort into it, not that you bartered some currency in one form or another from other players to achieve it.
Adding traits as a DLC would break their mantra of, No paying real money to out perform other players.
And the reason they have it at 70 trait points is so you dont have more than 2 traits maxed out at 30 each.
As far as your PVP suggestions, these shouldnt even be a DLC should be a FEATURE already as the name suggests, GUILD wars.
If u played GW1, you know they gave you new skills when you baught DLC’s wich was quite unfair for players that didnt baught them too.
And with DLC i also mean just future features and adds.
First of all, Guildwars ONE does not exist.
Its called Guildwars
Prophecies
Factions
Nightfall
Eye of the North
are not DLCs they’re EXPANSIONS.
Secondly
What you’re talking about adding more trait points is like Guildwars giving players more ATTRIBUTE POINTS for buying an expansion, which by the way maxes out at 200 and not a single number more for each expansion.
I’m just assuming here that you actually played Guildwars since you brought up and trust my better judgement that you know the difference between SKILLS and ATTRIBUTE POINTS.
Expansions in Guildwars are about new skills and new content, not adding more levels and making people get more top end gear.
(edited by Rizzy.8293)
They’re called dungeon finders.
And we need one

Yes! I would absolutely LOVE this game mechanic in GW2! If anything to get my pets bigger like Eir’s giant wolf. <3
Dire wolves :P
So… it vanishes… or go into stealth rather.
Does it get like a damage bonus on its basic attack or something?
I really dont understand why they put in the “reach behind the back for arrows from invisible quiver” move when theres no quivers.
1) Give dragon champions free range of their territory
Tequila the Sunless – Spawns anywhere in Tarnished Coast
Claw of Yormag – Spawns anywhere in Shiverpeaks
The Shatterer – Anywhere in Blazeridge
Allow them to attack outposts and lay waste to opposing mobs
2) Use NPCs in neighbouring zones and main cities including Lions Arch to warn players about the Dragon threat.
3) Give dragons mobility, its disappointing that all these epic beasts ever do is stand in one spot give you the evil eye and scream and then do a breath effect. I want them to be able to move, toss players back and smash them under their mighty feet.
If number 3 is applied, it wont even need so much HP like it was some kind of giant digital meat pinata, it would be moving and killing people who are complacent.
pets use their own conditions i believe.
