Well, what storry would you make then, if your guild is called “Guardians Of The Silver Dragons”?

Stick to the actual lore, turn the dragon into a metaphor, or take it on as a sigil,
It’s not like house Lannister actually has a Lion for a pet or house Baretheon actually fought to preserve stags in the kings wood.

I dont like it sorry, its not the video or anything,
Its the part where you made up “Silver Dragons” and how they used to rule the world, but humans turned against the dragons and now the dragons are in hiding and you’re trying to protect them.

Sorry no, the dragons have a hunger to consume everything, they’re basically evil, whole adventure in tyria was to take down that one dragon then move on to the next… and you want to protect them? :|

Yeah no… The only good dragon was Glint and she wasnt even a full dragon nor was she silver.

Try sticking to the actual lore.

Ascalon was charr land, but the problem was the charr were too busy killing each other that they didn’t notice the humans setting up camp and driving warring war bands off the land.

Its the whole palestine israel issue.

it’s even named after a biblical location.

On the one hand, you have the natives, who have always been there but never utilized it.
And on the other you had immigrants who moved in and set up a new way of life and culture for hundred of years.

That’s a stretch…

For one thing, the Charr were nomadic. They were said to raid areas all around the Blazeridge Mountains, which is their supposed homelands. Ascalon, and probably a lot of other areas, were hunting/killing grounds for them. No one ever asks why there is zero trace of them ever having lived in Ascalon during GW1. No ruins, no rubble, no nothing. It’s because they didn’t live there.

It would be similar to some random civilization pushing into the Russian steppes during the Mongolian’s golden age. Yeah it “belonged” to the Mongolians at the time, but it certainly wasn’t a part of their ancestral homeland by any means. Ascalon was simply within the extent of their sphere of influence, and not something they had any significant historical claim on.

It serves the GW2 writer’s well to paint it another color though. Rytlock’s claim that the “humans drove us out and built Ascalon on top of it” is a lot of storybook bravado. The “it” was empty land, it’s not like they had settlements there. Being on the southern fringe of the Charr terriroty, at most there would have been a few hunting camps around.

Charr dont build brick and mortar houses like Humans do.
Charr live off the land erect tents of bone and leather.
Ascalon was Charr hunting ground.
Charr occupied it, humans came in and drove them out, build a big wall around Ascalon as a big, kittento charr and saying this our land now, get the eff off.

This is not to be confused with the Charr of today’s civilization, who are industrialized.
You want a look at charr civilization back in Ascalonian times look at the flame legion, everything they have can be easily wiped away if another civilization built ontop of their ruins.

Same as Sparrow’s response, I have no idea why they even introduced the 4 other races when human cultural diversity in GW1 filled the same niche. That’s one thing that made it great imo, that almost anyone from around the world could at least partially identify with a human kingdom or faction.

Personally, I feel like a foreigner in Tyria when I play a non-human. :/

Humans and centaurs both have cultural diversity.

So why are you a Human?

I choose human because…

Charr: Are destroying the land they fought and killed for over a period of 200+ years. They think they are innovative but their drilling and mining is quickly ruining the land around them. They will just wage war on someone else to drill for their resources soon after, all the while claiming it was theirs to being with when they have more than enough territory behind them.
Asura: I can not stand smug people enough said.
Norn: They are just tall humans and I don’t want to be 9 foot tall, nor do I want to have a mans voice while playing a female character.
Sylvari: From my Charr post you would assume I am, to put it nicely, “Environmental Friendly person” but I don’t want to walk around as a salad, nor do I want to be a nightlight.

I mean if the Charr had reached their current level of civilization right now, ie. less magic and voodoo and more of a meritocracy, the charr and human leaders would have been able to come up with a peace treaty.

Imagine you play an Elementalist.
A farmer tells you to water his plants or a town pillaged by pirates is burning and you need to put it out

You have dagger/dagger skill 5 is a splash of water
staff skill five you make rain clouds and it rains…

Yet you still have to pick up a bucket of water to water plants and put out fires.

You can argue that, “well maybe your water spells are hitting the things to be watered too hard”

Okay so what about those times you need to light a campfire?
Don’t tell me fire fields or fire skills that set things on fire cant set those things on fire.

I mean you have the power of the elements at your fingertips yet you still need a rusty old torch :|

OR!

Rizzy.8293

Alright, so I bought GW2 a few weeks ago, played it for some time and haven’t touched it since (yet I visit the forums from time to time, just out of pure curiosity). Now this is from the perspective of a person who hasn’t got past level 25.

What I like:
- eye candy graphics. I don’t think there’s anything more to say here
- the general idea of questing through exploration. Really nice in theory, but execution is a bit off imo
- no monthly fee

What I don’t like:
- combat (especially in PvP). Without roles it seems a bit shallow. Being limited to 10 abilities only makes the feeling stronger. Moreover, almost all the abilities are about dealing damage. The lack of utility stuff makes combat a “spam your kitten at the enemy” experience. I rather have the combat mechanics complex and clear, than spammy and chaotic.
- questing. I found it exceptionally boring. The idea of leveling through exploration is a great one… but in GW2 it’s just crap. All in all, it ends up as “kill this and gather this”. The lack of any story in most quests only makes it even more boring. At level 25 I was dead tired already. Exploration isn’t where it should be either. People should explore out of curiosity, not because the game tells them to by showing points of interest on the map. So instead of “I wonder what’s this way. Ima explore” it’s all “Oh… there’s a point of interest in there. kitten… I bet there will be some quest and vista”. In the end it’s very predictable (exploration should NOT be predictable) and annoying.
- WvWvW and PvP in general. As someone in this thread has stated already, it feels more like Zerg vs Zerg vs Zerg. I suppose it goes well with the “spam all your kitten when it’s out of cooldown” combat idea, but I personally didn’t like it one bit. The general theory of a big map with lots of stuff to do is great, but the way it actually plays is a huge kittenblock. The lack of world PvP makes the open world experience suffer like hell. Now I know one might say “but you have WvWvW with a huge world where you can PvP”. This is not the point. The lack of SPONTANEOUS PvP in the world makes it so bland and shallow. It really adds a whole new layer of gameplay and spice when you have to be on your toes while doing questing, gathering resources and “exploring”. But it seems that the entire design of Guild Wars 2 was based around something entirely different – a simple and non-hostile experience where you can just log in for 30 minutes, do some stuff and not get absorbed by the game.
- lore and music. I suppose this is more subjective than the others. I just find Tyria so… bland and boring. It’s your generic mmo fantasy world, there is ABSOLUTELY nothing interesting in it. The races, places and everything – it all seems to be so uninspired. I had the same feeling when playing Rift. TERRIBLE voice acting, pathetic and pretentious personal stories only add the the effect. Apparently even Jeremy Soule gave in to the overwhelming dullness – as much as he tried to make the game sound epic… it sounds just pathetic.

Now I didn’t mean to sound like a hater. It just confuses me a bit that everyone drool to GW2 so much, while in my eyes the game is just bad… It’s not even that “not my kind of game” thing… the game is just BAD. I’d give it a 5/10 tops.

Edit: kitten .. this is a bit longer than intended

The lack of dueling is also what gets to me.
People dont learn to hone in their skills , they begin to rely on numbers.

This isn’t the first guildwars where such a big pvp map like Fort Aspenwood ends up with a good possibility that you end up fighting 1 v 1.

WvW everyone goes in with the mentality, safety in numbers and its pretty obvious.

INB4: Go to sPVP to duel noob.
No.
sPVP dueling and WvW combat are different.
sPVP uses standardized gear
WvW uses your PVE gear

Of course not. Thus “I consider”. Only my opinion. Everyone values their money from their own perspective of view.

“And as far as not supporting the game by not paying money for Gems, because the game has let you down, you think people dont know this?”

Apparently not. As people generally shoot down anyone recommending to take a step away from the game.

Another good example of that is when anet releases new rare skins that are only available from the black lion chest RNG. People buy 100 of them with money and don’t get a single skin they were looking for. Then they come to the forums and complain about the chest RNG, when the right decision in the first place would have been not to support such a crappy rip-off system. As long as players support the system enough (vote with their wallets) then it won’t change any time soon.

As for cognitive dissonance I see you read nothing but the picture with the fox.
FYI it’s not just you alter your cognition to match with your behavior. It’s also altering the behavior to match your cognition. Think how this applies to you.

So why are you trying to tell me what a movie is worth and then telling him that YOU THINK hes 2 level 80s is more than the moneys worth he paid for the game?

Secondly, Telling someone to stop playing the game is not constructive nor is it helpful.
Especially not for the company or the community.

Every player lost is one less player who will do a dungeon run or one less player to kill.
If your whole reason to play Gw2 is for your selfish satisfaction, try picking up Single Player games.

Another good example of that is when anet releases new rare skins that are only available from the black lion chest RNG. People buy 100 of them with money
You are aware we can convert gold to gems right. :|

Again, you don’t know what you’re talking about secondly don’t make assumptions.
1) You’re not a psychologist.
2) You’re not a sociologist even.

This is cognitive dissonance.

Oh I really want that car, but I can only afford this cheaper version of the car, oh well it will do.
or
My liver is failing, I really shouldn’t drink, YOLO.

This is specifically BUYER’S REMORSE.
You buy something expecting it to be what it was supposed to be but turns out it isnt.
You have 2 choices, put it on the shelf and let it collect dust or try to find entertaining out of it.

Okay, thank you for clarifying.

Well, that depends on how much you think you have to play in order to get your “moneys worth”. Going to movie here costs about 10€. If the movie lasted 3h it would mean that 18 hours of movies equals 60 euro. I consider that once you start to reach around 100h mark (which is entirely possible in op’s case if he has 2 lvl80) you have gotten more than your money’s worth. You can also forget about the game and return later if the game has something interesting to offer.

If the product does not meet your expectations (manifesto’s genuineness is a different topic altogether), the best way to deliver the message is not to play and not to use the gem store. Vote with your wallet and don’t waste any more time and effort to something you don’t actually enjoy.

Also for more fancy psychological concepts
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance
I think it applies very well to you. You play because you want to “justify” yourself the money you spent under the false premises of manifesto. I don’t think it’s the most enjoyable way to approach the game.

Oh so you’re the official of what something is worth now? :|
Cool thanks for clarifying, now I know who to look for.

Do you think Euro Truck Sim is worth the 60 dollars?

False Advertising is something EVERY company should avoid, it reduces the companies credibility, I hope Anet learns this.
And as far as not supporting the game by not paying money for Gems, because the game has let you down, you think people dont know this?

Im now far more than convinced you dont know what you’re talking about.
Cognitive dissonance refers to putting in a lot of effort but not getting the reward and actively altering a previous cognition that reward worth it.

And whats the rewards in Gw2?
Extrinsic.

.

Okay so taking an extra second longer to be able to stealth then backstab in PVE which has been calculated to be about 1.7k damage decrease per rotation is not a damage decrease.

Imagine if you had to do four chains, what’s 4 × 1.7k?

Really? I think the most definitive answer to being unmotivated is not to play and do something that brings more entertainment for one’s leisure time. It’s amusing that if someone suggests “not to play” he is immediately shot down for not being constructive.

Players seem to have this old MMO-mindset that you have to keep on playing the game and try to find something enjoyable from the end-game even though you don’t have the intrinsic motivation to play anymore and it feels more like a chore. It’s simply not an option to do something else for the time being? To wait for the next patch for example and see if it brings anything interesting to the table?

Do you actually understand what you’ve just said or were you copy pasting big words?

Feeling unmotivated is not the same as NOT being motivated at all.

What’s the intrinsic motivation for this game them?
Gear grinding for legendary and ascended crap?
that’s extrinsic, you’re doing all this pointless stuff just to get those items, its not something you actually enjoy doing, its something you have to do to get it.

Intrinsic rewards would be the activities themselves are rewarding

Indeed. I share this same definition with you and I’m referring to it in my previous post. If the game itself does not feel like fun and rewarding in itself (thus no intrinsic motivation), why keep playing it? People seem to think that you just have to keep running in the treadmill, desperately trying to find something enjoyable to do, while it’s just as possible to leave the treadmill altogether and find something else to spend your time on.

As for the rest of your post, I honestly have no idea what you are trying to accomplish exactly or what is your point. Could you clarify? How was that relevant to my post or the OP?

Because you’ve paid money for it of upwards of 70 dollars.

Even Assassins Creed 3 is cheaper.

And if you paid that much money believing in the manifesto, would you not try to find something worthwhile to do that makes you wanna stay?

that’s extrinsic, you’re doing all this pointless stuff just to get those items, its not something you actually enjoy doing, its something you have to do to get it.

Intrinsic rewards would be the activities themselves are rewarding, there no actual community building effort in Gw2, I dont see a Dungeon Finder (or as most gw2 scrubs would call it) LFG tool to ease the search of Dungeon groups. theres no light hearted PVE activity that encourages players to socialize like Polymock or Bar Fights (another idea we heard about from the beta talk), no instead what the game encourages is faceless Zerging.

Nothing you do in PVE feels like its affected the world.
A contrary feeling to what the Manifesto has said, you save a town they remember you.
I saved a town from Pirates and they still dont remember me.

Hell Guildwars even had one NPC toon who would talk about you and your titles in Tarnish Coast and that was more than what the PVE here has given us.

Old MMORPG mindsets like somekind of elitist.

A lot of people, believe it or not, came in here expecting what has been said in the manifesto to be truth, shockingly enough they werent, thats the mindset people came into GW2 with.

“If you love MMORPGs you gonna love guildwars2 if you dont like MMORPGs you’re going to want to check out GW2”

Tell me what has GW2 revolutionize?

Abolishing the Trinity system?
That’s such a break through isnt it.

Now don’t get me wrong, despite my criticism of Gw2, I actually like Gw2, I see this game has so muuuuuuuuuch potential.

And unlike a fanboy who goes, HOW DARE YOU POINT OUT ITS FLAWS.
I point them out so they get noticed.

And as much as everyone here hates WOW.
The fact that its been around this long means its doing something right to keep the community together, a good business would study their competitors and apply whats working out in that business into theirs.
And contrary to to popular belief, Not all WOWtards are people with no life who spend hours on raids. Quite a few of my work mates play wow, and yes they agree the subscription is a chore, but the community and the people they meet are enough to make them stay.

Id like to see more Machinmas of Gw2 other than “TORUND NEEDS BUTTER”
Which doesnt even have an episode 2.

Gods are space aliens who came to tyria and brought humans their slave race to mine for gold and minerals.

The dragons had fallen asleep when the gods arrive.

The gods are not communicating to the humans anymore coz they hella scared of dragons.

Look at Dhuum, he was a god, you compare his size to the size of the dragon’s lieutenant, hes still a small fry, compared to a full grown dragon like Zhaitan, Gods are insignificant specks compared to dragons and don’t go saying gods have magic powers and all that, dragons do too, Zhaitan rose a freaking sunken nation out of the water and had hordes of undead minions.

Kralkatrorik found glint’s one grain of sand in the countless of other grains of sand in the crystal desert and killed her.

Human gods are outmatched and outgunned by the dragons and they know it.

In favour of self preservation the gods have retreated to their personal luxury spaceship looking down at the chaos and turmoil brewing in tyria.

I think you’re forgetting Elona and Cantha…

Elona is lost to Palawa Joko and Kralkratorik
Cantha has shut its harbours to non Canthans.

Actually the human race has been dying out. In GW1 they populated just about every corner of the map and had three (well they had JUST lost one) major nations. Now they only really inhabit Kryta, have only one nation, and only 1 major city. I’d say that is a huge decline.

As for the game of players, that can easily be explained in lore as they have more adventurers than most other races because they are natural explorers. Doesn’t mean the population as a whole is bigger, just the ratio of how many choose an adventurer’s life.

That works I guess.
We’ve also lost Elona it seems.

I think you’re missing the point. It’s not about power and such. The ascended rings, neck, etc…are not even visible on your character. Their stated carrot was cool looking skins to set characters apart…those skins don’t really exist. There are some interesting skins, but they don’t set characters apart or really provide much of a carrot because they are relatively simple to get and everyone that wants them has them.

It’s true…the fractal ones add one avenue for a different skin. But that’s only one avenue…and they’re not particularly good looking (though that’s not really the point either).

Remember when Obisdian Armour was all the rage in Guildwars because it meant something and then Vabbi armour

Guildwars2 needs to look at guildwars and pick up the things that were good about it and apply into guildwars2.

People are more than willing to chase a carrot that is just a cosmetic item which gave you status symbol.

Either you’re rich or you’re good enough in the game to earn those.

So humans are supposed to be a dying race.
Yet somehow everytime I form a group for a dungeon…
Majority of the group is human… one or two non human.

According this census…
http://gw2census.com/charts.php?pie=main-Yes÷=charrace
Humans are the majority race.
Whats up with that?

I think Gw2 is the only MMORPG ive been on where you have a plethora of races to choose from and humans make the majority.
