The thing about this question is that it’s all dependent on what playstyle you enjoy. Some people will enjoy one class’s playstyle while others will find it tedious. I’d say every class has merits and flaws that would make a person like or hate it.

Do Sylvari cry tears?

in Lore

Rognik.2579

Does their nose run after they’ve been crying?

No, it stays firmly attached to their face.

On a more serious note, we know fairly little about the intimate details of sylvari biology. They’re pretty much all plant inside, yet are perfectly capable of digesting flesh. There are special menders to act as healers and they repair themselves slightly differently than the other races. Also, twins are possible, but exceedingly rare. Other than that, they’re pretty much a mystery, even to themselves.

All the riddles have two possible answers. I’m guessing the second riddle you got was the “I have a head like a cat” one? It seems kind of silly if a cat was the “real” answer. Or you could try the other riddle path. I found once I plucked that path, that riddle was more obvious than the other. Then again, the cat riddle didn’t leave me charr ed for the wrong answer.

"Lazarus" [Spoilers]

We don’t have the date of Esthel’s death. We do, however, have a letter in Caudecus’ Correspondences (letter 13) indicating that it was under Caudecus that the focus was on researching means of weaponising the bloodstones. My conclusion was that Esthel’s death happened prior to 75 Zephyr, and the ‘Confessor’ in Bauer’s journal was Caudecus in every case.

We might not know the exact day, but we do know that orphaned humans killed her during their rise to power, so that’s as close to a timeframe as we can get. I don’t think we can say it coordinated with the release date of the game, but some time around there. Interestingly enough, the bookshelves contained some information about bloodstones, which I suppose was more foreshadowing of events like those in Bloodstone Fen.

So, those broken Waypoints

in Living World

Rognik.2579

Actually, they got sadly stuck travelling to fix them when the great “freeze in time” happened, and every zone was locked at the point in time in the story when it was created.

So … nope. It’s unlikely anything will change in the existing world ever again.

Except that the Current Events still spawn, which are far later in time than any of the maps in which they spawn. So the time freeze doesn’t explain that.

I would like to see the broken waypoints fixed again, because there’s no significant reason why they should stay broken. Unless they were a partial response to complaints that there were far too many waypoints on the map and this is a way to cull a few down.

The big question is why would any of these people even pretend to be our ally and offer to fight the dragons? While it might be an exciting twist, there’s still the issue of wanting to kill the dragons. Now, I could believe that the mursaat would have wanted to help fight the dragons, as they tried to exterminate their race, too, but Menzies? Dhuum? OK, maybe Abaddon, but he’s dead/absorbed by Kormir.

Well, there is an option to toggle between walk speed and run speed, and charr only get down on all fours when running, and out of combat running at that. Predictions for (Final?) Episode 5 [Spoilers]

in Living World

Rognik.2579

The devs actually said that the dragons are territorial and if the two should ever cross paths, they will fight each other. It hasn’t really applied before, as there is almost never two different types of dragon minions on a single map, but I think we will see it when Primordus and Jormag fight. So there’s no worry that the two dragons will ever team up, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be any easier to kill them.

LS3 - Episode 5 Release date?

The current forecast is that episode 5 would be out some time in April, give or take a few weeks. When we get closer to a definite release, you’ll hear about it.
As for the frequency of the episodes, would you like it more in the style we had in Season 2? We’d get a single map that slowly expanded over the course of the story that got released every 2 week. Currently, we have a full map released ever 2 months with plenty of new things to do in each one of them, while the variety of new tasks in Season 2 wasn’t quite as varied. I’m not sure which I’d prefer, especially as I vaguely recall people who started midway in the season 2 story stuff getting lost in the maps trying to complete the story (eg. returning to Omadd’s device when you didn’t find it the first time).

[Suggestion] Profession change

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rognik.2579

Rognik.2579

Given my experience with GW1 in which you can change profession (Razah, one of the endgame heroes can change his primary profession), I know the GW engine is capable of doing so, so this request is not random wish.

Sighting GW1 is not a good precedent for how things work in GW2. First off, while you could always change the secondary profession in GW1 (there were quests in the Crystal Desert that unlocked this back in Prophesies), the primary profession was always locked. Razah being able to change his primary was an exception, being a hero character and designed as such at his introduction. So even back then, the primary profession never changed.

Even if it were a valid basis, though, GW2 is a completely different set-up. There are no more secondary professions, and there are unique mechanics that are radically different from each other. What would the ranger’s first pet be if he didn’t start out as the class? The thief has an initiative bar, the mesmer has illusion bubbles, the warrior has an adrenaline bar the revenant has an energy bar; those all could potentially muck about with the code if the professions swap. Lots of little things could make it a big problem.

Finally, you say you would be willing to pay for it? That’s great! How often? How many others would? It can’t be measured in a vacuum, but against a myriad of facets. I know it’s not the answer you want, but why force a complicated solution when there’s a simple one available? If you want to have a different character with the same name and look, but not lose your age bonus, just buy the total makeover kit and identity reclaimer to keep the bonuses and create a new toon with the old name!

[SUGGESTION] Introducing New Playable Races

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rognik.2579

Rognik.2579

Moot point with auto scaling of levels. My HoT purchased gave me my guardian. She was still level nothing in new player areas. Personnaly I love the story too much to pass it by. New races? Dwarves! And if you don`t want to read thier story stop now.

Except that we met the dwarves back in GW1, and they were flesh-and-blood. When Primordus was first starting to rise, the dwarves sought out a ritual to turn themselves into stone, but realized that would be the death of their race. Dwarves cannot reproduce, and the few dwarves that remain existed 250 years ago. So your entire story is wrong.

To the original topic, I really wouldn’t be interested in having another quick leveling zone like they did in Factions or Nightfall. I much preferred how things were in Prophecies, where the zones slowly got higher, rather than a quick-leveling system so the existing characters could play through most of the story without retreading old ground. So if, for instance, the Tengu were made playable, I’d want their starting zone to be tied to Caledon Forest and they leveled just like other characters towards a main goal. There was the tengu blacksmith, Izu, so it’s not as if they were entirely removed from the assault on Zhaitan. Fighting tengu in the jungle might be weird, though, unless they were a villainous faction.

Also, I sadly don’t feel like the kodan will be a playable race. I was in favour of the idea up until they added the endless kodan potion. That was pretty much the death of them as a playable race.

So, Order of Whispers canon (spoilers)

Again, going back to the letter in Caudecus’s Manor, it seems that all of the Personal Story options happened at the same time, but if it wasn’t you doing it, it was another hero of Tyria. Tybalt would have still rescued Demmi and taken her into the Whispers operation, and then he died, probably around the same time our other mentor died on Claw Island.

Would it fit if say all three mentors went on Claw Island and they all sacrificed their lives for one of the mentor’s progeny, Trahearne, and Mira?

I’m going to venture no, only your order’s mentor died at Claw Island, but the other two died when Zhaitan’s forces attacked all three orders at the same time.

New Ranger Elite Specialization: the Stalker

Rognik.2579

What’s your opinion about the limits of transform skills?
Right now necro/reaper use transform skills and are totally playable. Same goes for warriors with Rampage and eles with Tornado. And don’t forget that if you play Stalker you can pick only 1 or 2 transformations.

Um… why? If you’re handing out a new suite of skills, they should all be useable together. Unless the stalker’s transform is specifically tied to the pet out at the time, I should be able to switch from a turtle to the leopard to the bison to the bloodscale.

I admit, this is an interesting idea, but it has a lot of kinks that need ironing out before it becomes something balanced and viable.

Paths: Unlocking new content type

Rognik.2579

Well, I did a little more research after my last post, and realised the 4 Wildstar paths followed the 4x logic: explorer is explorer, soldier is exterminate, settler is expand, and scientist is exploit. They might not line up perfectly, but they are on a similar vein. The problem I feel with the paths, though, is that you’re dedicating yourself to just one of those facets, rather than letting yourself freely switch between them.

Honestly, I think adventures was an attempt to make something like this, but it went it a more arcade-like formula rather than satisfying any of these ideas. Like, you try to kill as many vines as you can in a minute (or however long that adventure is), or see how quickly you can make it through this pass. Perhaps if there were hidden little side quests, if you will, it could fulfill the idea of a path without giving a path. For instance, one could be finding X fragments scattered in a certain area, that needs to be done so fast; or fight in a pit for as long as you can possibly stand; or, I dunno, a semi-random puzzle to study a sample a krewe collected.

I think choosing a path is a mistake as it locks you into that, and then you can’t do any of the others. GW2 has always been styled on the change-on-the-go freedom concept, so putting these as optional side activities would work better than saying “you only get one of these four special activities, so choose wisely!” Even the crafting professions aren’t locked, so long as you’re willing to pay a bit to swap which ones are active.

What a terrible argument. GW2 wouldn’t exist if gw1 wasn’t so successful. Not sure how you figure abandoning gw1 and everything that made it great suddenly made gw2 its superior successor.

Maybe I didn’t present myself properly. I LOVED the old GW stuff, and started playing since the Team Arena was still located in Droknar’s Forge. What they did, they did well, but then they wanted to do more things. And as the map expanded, there were fewer and fewer people in the various out of the way outposts, and even the older campaigns became less populated as the quests and other achievements in the area were completed by characters and had no motivation to go back to them. Players were getting less interested in new professions, especially when assassin or ritual skills showed up in Elona and you’d have to have Factions for those skills to be useful at all. There were a bunch of things that were “wrong” with it, insofar as the devs could not do it without the system being overhauled.

Let me repeat: I LOVE the original game. If it were still getting updates, I would go back to it in a heartbeat, especially as I haven’t fully unlocked my Hall of Monuments achievements. But Guild Wars 2 has a structure in place that allows them to do most of the things that get players excited, like varied races or new skill paths, without the system fighting against them doing what they want. GW2 is structured better, but GW1 had the atmosphere that made me fall in love.

What is Minister Caudecus' profession?

I actually recorded his skills for the wiki yesterday. He uses thief sword skill 1 (whole chain), sword/pistol dual skill, and pistol skills 2 and 4.

No mesmer weapon skills.

His special action skill (called Filthy Peasant!) is also a mirror of Shadow Shot (dagger/pistol dual skill).

He’s a thief.

This kind of makes sense. He’s trying to steal the throne from Jennah, after all. Plus, Demmi is a thief and his daughter, so she had to have learned it somewhere.

Why do Sylvari have romance?

in Lore

Posted by: Rognik.2579

Rognik.2579

Sylvari have attraction because that’s what they learned through the Dream. There are a lot of things that confuse them, but camaraderie is not one of them. Also, it might be a learned thing rather than an instinctual one, where they didn’t start feeling close to each other until after seeing the other races do it. I haven’t really studied up on Caithe and Faolain’s relationship, but I know part of the reason those two grew closer was because those two were the ones with the strongest wanderlust out of the Firstborns. We all feel a need to be close to each other, and perhaps the sylvari romance is dramatically different than the other races’ idea. I mean, there are more “homosexual” relationships among the sylvari than there are “heterosexual” ones. (I use the terms loosely as gender for them is different than for other races.)

As for the issue of equipment, it’s from before the game was released, but it was confirmed that sylvari have at least the right tools, even if they don’t have the internal components necessary in reproduction. Aside from, ahem, spreading their seed or fertilizing their soil, there’s nothing a human can do that way that a sylvari cannot duplicate.

Rognik.2579

you could say that about absolutely any good content in a mmorpg. in GW2 however it would be likely that everyone would have access to the paths so exclusivity is not an issue.

If everyone has access to the paths then aren’t they just dynamic events, jumping puzzles and adventures?

I haven’t played Wildstar, but I heard a little bit about this. As I understand it, players chose from one of 4 paths: explorer (who focused on finding new areas), soldier (who focuses on killing enemies), settler (who focused on building up the landscape and collecting resources), and scientist (who studied the land; think any asura). Like how any race can be any profession, each path is open to all characters.

However, aren’t all these paths already open to our characters? You gain experience for uncovering a new part of the map, hitting a new waypoint and viewing a new vista, so the explorer types are satisfied. There are a ton of enemies to kill, and lots of events focus on either surviving a wave or defeating all the enemies in an area, so the soldiers are satisfied. Anyone can collect all three resource types and learn any crafting profession (although how many at a time depends on the licensing agreements), so the settlers are (mostly) satisfied. I’m not as familiar with the scientist M.O. so I can’t really draw a parallel for that, but I’m sure there’s something that can satisfy that playstyle, too.

Honestly, as far as personalized storytelling goes, I prefer how it currently is. If more instances in the future can be like Confessor’s End, where playing a specific profession makes a certain part of the encounter easier, then let’s do that. I remember when I was running around on my necromancer and I found a tomb by the Serenity Temple ruins. I forget what I did, but a ghost popped up. I went to the wiki an I was surprised when she wasn’t already listed, so I added her. I only learned later that only necromancers can actually interact with her, which is actually kind of neat. Similarly, rangers can get all excited when a new pet gets released, something that the other classes have to glare at with envy. Maybe we’ll have a point where being a specific race will similarly split something off in the story in a noticeable way, rather than something most people will miss.

[Suggestion] Profession change

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rognik.2579

Rognik.2579

This one I think is messy for a whole other set of reasons. Yes, there’s nothing story-wise that would prevent this, but remember that each profession has a unique mechanic to it that is there from level 1. Even if we ignore the armor/weapon thing and, say, had you switch from mesmer to elementalist. Here are the various things that will change:
1. Character loses the ability to swap weapons. It’s just gone, which also means that weapons in the offset would have to be shunted into your inventory and hidden in the hero panel. This might be less of a problem in the reverse, revealing the second weapon set slots, but then again, it might not. Depends on how they were coded.
2. The mesmer shatter skills are replaced with attunements. These two mechanics function completely differently, especially as the mesmer has three phantasm blips while the elementalist has a permanent attunement buff. Swapping from one to the other could offer a plethora of bug possibilities.
3. Resetting already bought skills and replacing specialization lines. Sure, the game keeps track of how many skill points you have, so that is probably not a problem, but the specializations would have to point to a new list of skills. Also, is your character still at the same level, or are they reset to level 1? After all, I may know a lot about accounting, but I can’t just suddenly want to practice law and become a partner at a firm.

And this is just the surface stuff we can see. Coding any game more complex than a text adventure is a complicated process, and gets more complicated with the more people added and the more unplanned features such as changing professions offer. Basically, I imagine this would be a coding nightmare which is much more easily solved by just making a new character. Your complaint about birthday gifts? Lost. RP? Handwave it. I delete the old character, give the name to the new one, make him/her look the same, and nobody can tell the difference.

Guild Wars 3?

Rognik.2579

I really hate threads like this, the ones asking about GW3. Most of these people don’t understand the reason why the original Guild Wars was abandoned: because having a mostly instanced world allowed for a lot of storytelling, but cut down on the ability to meet up with other players spontaneously. GW2 fixed that, with longevity built into the design. They can make their instanced zones anywhere in the world, yet maintain a persistent world where players and randomly meet up with each other, all working towards the same end, and can group up or not as they wish.

As many people have pointed out, what could they possibly want to do that they can’t with the systems already programmed? GW couldn’t suddenly be turned persistent, nor could they just start with the next expansion/chapter. Plus the skill bloat/power creep, adding more heroes, more armour sets, the fact that you had to play as a human… it all just built to a point where the engine hampered the creative design of the team. GW2 has 5 races, currently 9 professions, and a slowly expanding world with fairly regular updates (or at least plenty of news when new content will/won’t be available). They could add new playable races if they want to (like the tengu), but as the race of a character is largely cosmetic and story-based, they likely aren’t going to; they can, but the cons outweigh the pros. They can and have added new professions. The elite specializations are kind of like how new skills were added back in GW, only with mechanics in place so that they don’t need to compare every single skill combination with every other combo. There’s no need to abandon this game yet.

Plus, we still have 4 dragons and at least 2 other continents to explore. We can’t leave until we go to Elona, Cantha, or the half-dozen other continents we’ve seen on the map! So please, people, stop asking for GW3 unless something about the engine is super-ultra broken!

[Idea/Speculation] Expansion 2 Masteries

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rognik.2579

Rognik.2579

I’m going to preface this by saying it’s pretty clear we aren’t going into the Crystal Desert this expansion. The theme of Season 3 is Primordus vs Jormag, just as Season 2 was all about that Mordremoth, so we’re either going up north to the Far Shiverpeaks, or Primordus’s homebase, whether that be the Ring of Fire or Tyrian Depths. That said, we WILL go to the Crystal Desert eventually, so I’ll respond to that.

Mount Mastery

At best we will get Junundu Wurms which will be required to travel through burning desert sands (just like GW1). The mastery will focus on riding your wurm better and unlocking wurm skills. The wurms will only be usable in certain areas (just like GW1) because the core game doesn’t need and really has no room for mounts…
Agreed that the mounts would be restricted to certain areas, but with a bit of creativity, there could be more mounts than just the Wurms. Maybe there are some giant vultures in the desert to give another way to move around, with one possible mastery being able to jump from the bird midflight and gliding to certain areas.

Arms Mastery

This is probably never going to be a thing. Anet already showed us the way we will unlock new weapons is through elite specializations. The skills on every weapon have to be carefully balanced which is why we only get elite specs from expansions.
Unless there are very specific weapons being used in the desert, I agree with this completely.

Glint’s Prophecy

Double, triple, and quadruple jumping sounds fun on paper, but is pretty ridiculous if you really think about it. Being able to do that anywhere at any time is going to make a lot of core game areas silly and allow people to break out of maps too easily. Not to mention jumping puzzle issues. The closes I think we might get is a new type of bouncing mushroom that lets you trigger the bounce 2 or 3 times in the air, but it only works in new areas where the map is specifically designed for it.
Unless the staff plan on going back through the game and adding No Jumping zones just like the No Fly zones, this also sums up my thoughts. Plus, with the glider already defaulting to the jump button, how would you activate the second jump?

Forgotten Lore / Margonite Lore

Like I said earlier, this one is pretty cool if you focus more on the lore and less on combat buffs. Make it so that you need to level this up in order to speak the same language as Margonites and Forgotten and be able to learn about the story from them. Make it a study of the language and culture so you can read their books and open magically sealed doors or whatever.
_Just to call back some of the examples from the Maguuma, you learned how to use the mushrooms, hunt better, enter the wallows, etc. That’s how the new Lore masteries should work as well. Maybe one skill is how to find water in the desert, and it reduces heat stroke in certain areas. Or the magical seals as Xenon suggested. It should teach you how to do something else on top of what you know, not something new.

Now for my suggestion of what I expect, assuming a Jormag-centered expansion:
Cold Mastery
Learn how to better survive in bitter temperatures. Levels could include Heat Conservation, so that you can survive in certain hostile areas (like the one in Bitterfrost Gorge); Snow Foraging, so you can find farming nodes under the snow; and Frost Fire, where you use the snowy environment to launch certain attacks at foes.

Underground Mastery
On the off chance that Primordus is set up in the north and still underground. This mastery makes it easier to navigate in subterranean environments, including Phosphorous Collecting, to see in the dark areas; Spelunking, to climb certain types of rock outcrops; and a skill that lets you deal damage to a certain type of enemy, similar to the Nuhoch mastery that allows you to better survive chak attacks.

Ancient Asura/Dwarven Mastery
This one is a bit tricky. The asura used to live mostly under the Far Shiverpeak mountains, and had to leave a lot of their knowledge and research behind when chased to the surface. The dwarves were similarly subterranean, but also lived on the surface a bit. Depending on various factors, there are things both of these cultures could have left behind to be relearned as we return to these abandoned areas.

Stunlock Needs to Go

You are wrong. Just 1 example. First day of Head of the Snake, lake Doric. I’m playing with my friend, we are fighting champion bloodstone elemental (the guy that farts dozens of small elementals all the time, which explode and launch everythimg they hit). My friend (engineer) just stands on max range and shoots with rifle auto, I’m (ranger) dancing in champ’s melee, evading explosions and using my full PvE rotation. Then, after like 40 seconds of the fight, I make a single mistake and explosion launches me into air. Before I retain character controll another explosion launches me again. And again. And again. And I’m dead. And my friend is alive, on max range still pressing rifle 1. At that moment I realized that Anets CC fetish is so very wrong.

I hate to say this, but I think the problem is with your build. I don’t know what your skill set is, but I can see two possible flaws in your playstyle:
1. Rangers are indeed perfectly capable of fighting in close quarters, but at least half of their primary weapon attacks are ranged ones. Whether you wield a short bow, long bow, axe or the druid’s staff, you’re primarily fighting at range. The sword has 2 skills that focus on maneuverability that can take you out of the way of enemy attacks. It’s been ages since I just a greatsword on a ranger, but I’m pretty sure it has some agility steps to it, too. My point is that you need to keep moving, and try to be far enough away when you do make a mistake to be able to recover once it’s done.
2. If you do make a mistake, you need to have a stunbreaker in place. To my knowledge, the ranger only has one: Lightning Reflexes. In the past, I’ve seen people mock this skill as useless, but if you read it properly, it’s basically an extra dodge that you can activate when immobilized or the like. Again, I haven’t looked much at the other skills to see if any of them offer an escape, but if you’re constantly in close quarters, you should have a skill that gets you away from the action if you go down and there’s not a horde backing you up.
Some people might be good enough to get away with melee-only weapons and close-quarters combat on a ranger and not need the bailout card, and that’s fine. But you admitted you made a mistake, and the game punished you for it. Hard. Time to reevaluate your approach so it doesn’t happen again.

How do people feel about the difficulty of the Maguuma Wastes maps? Dry Top and the Silverwastes were added after Core Tyria but before HoT, so it should have been the transition map, really. And you have to go through the Silverwastes to get to Verdant Brink anyway. Maybe this is the transition map people need, but keep overlooking because they just want to jump into the new expansion.

I’m not sure why anyone would know that, outside of hearing it from someone in /map or /say. (I certainly didn’t think of it — damage should be damage, regardless of whether it’s dealt from the air or the ground.)

I think the issue is in how characters are tagged. I admit, I haven’t done much killing with the gliding skills, but I think if you’re in the air, you don’t necessarily tag the enemies. Has anyone killed a mob with just glider skills, and if so, did you get credit for it? This sounds like where the root of the problem is.

Legendary Crafting

Well, it’s not the game’s fault that there are “cheap” legendary weapons on the market. Plus, think of the bragging rights in being able to say that you built your own legendary weapon from the ground up!

Also, I believe any legendary weapon added after Heart of Thorns is account-bound, so you have to build those yourself. The older weapons had crafting recipes added so that you didn’t have to rely solely on having the precursor randomly drop somewhere.

Well, minor sigils and runes really aren’t worth the effort to anyone who has a max level character. There are thousands of them sitting on the TP which nobody wants to buy. I’d like to be able to add them to the “junk” list, but that’s just a personal wish and would probably take too many resources to properly code into the game. Guess I’ll just have to live with manually selling them off to the vendors.

Mastery points in Season 2?

in Living World

Rognik.2579

There were not. When mastery points were introduced, some achievements involving core Tyria had mastery points added to them. Each chapter in season 2 had at least 1, although perhaps 2? One for completing the chapter, and one for getting all the related achievements.

I thought I was, not so sure now.

As I understand the device from when I was doing the achievement, when the animal sought shows up, that means it has yet to spawn on your set of maps. I don’t know how it works entirely, but that’s what I was told.

Nightmare Court Instant Brainwashing?

in Lore

Rognik.2579

To reinforce, yes, there were Soundless long before Aerin in Season 2. There’s a whole village of them in Caledon Forest. They kind of pick a third option, severing from the Dream but not falling into Nightmare. Then again, we saw how that could turn out…

The first couple of members to the Nightmare Court were definitely different than the rest of the sylvari. Caderyn, the first of the “Secondborn”, was clearly upset with his lot in life and was at least instrumental in the Court’s formation. Faolain, while not an original member, was always pretty dark, as we saw in the flashbacks when we played as Caithe. They were probably destined for Nightmare. The other first members were probably similarly dissatisfied, but later members were not necessarily so.

I think one of the reasons sylvari could so easily fall to Nightmare, and this is entering both spoiler territory and tin-foil hat territory, is that they were originally destined to be dragon minions. If the Pale Tree is their mother, then Mordremoth is either their father or grandfather. Whatever protection that got placed over the Tree and her children, it can clearly be penetrated and that might be why torturing other sylvari can make them fall to Nightmare. Of course, as we saw, they weren’t obedient servants when Mordremoth called, but that could mean many other things as well.

Cue Konig contradicting me in 3… 2…

Macro for helmet on and off?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rognik.2579

Do you really need a macro to take the helmet off and on? How often are you RPing in a place where you’re prone to be battling? Or, if you’re in a battle zone, wouldn’t it be wiser to leave it on until you’re sure you’re safe? I know you want to make it easy to just take it off, but I think this might just be one of those things it’s easier to struggle through rather than spend time adding even more optional toggles.

Game of Chess in GW2

While it’s wasn’t remotely chess-like, I do miss being able to play the RC golems in Metrica Province. There was a certain chess-like element to it, having to plan your moves to get towards the enemy had a certain amount of strategy to it. I know one of the reasons they took it out was because of the dramatic drop of players in early zones, but it was still a fun minigame I’d like to be able to play against my friends.

Heart of Thorns Dilemma

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Rognik.2579

If I understand you dilemma correctly, I’d approach it this way: do the initial story on your guardian, since you enjoy that playstyle more than your mesmer, to completion so that you can do the story. I wouldn’t necessarily focus on map completion for this character, but do track down the various mastery points since they are account-bound, and complete the masteries needed like gliding. Then, after you’ve gone through it once, try tackling it on your sylvari. I can tell you that the story is very different playing on a sylvari than as another race. If you really don’t like the mesmer playstyle, perhaps try leveling another sylvari in a class you do like.

Map completion is definitely not a must, unless you want more Gifts of Exploration. Outside of the waypoints, it isn’t that important, as you’ve already unlocked the title for exploring the world and, as I said, it’s mostly just the Gifts you’d do it for. If you really want to do that, though, it can be done after you’ve completed all the story stuff and are looking for more things to do. And if you just need to get someone to do the world quest stuff, you have your mesmer all ready to do that.

So a question about Sylvari...

Can we pick our own Dragon's Watch members?

in Living World

Posted by: Rognik.2579

Rognik.2579

It would be nice if we could do it, but considering the complexity of potential stories, along with needing to have any number of lines recorded for a combination of characters, this is just impractical. Besides, at the rate we’re going, Dragon’s Watch is going to disband long before we even get to Jormag’s doorstep! It’s almost like defeating Mordremoth is what brought this band together, and now that he’s dead, everyone wants to go their separate ways. Almost.

Elite Sepcialization Lore

Rognik.2579

As far as I’m aware, there is no “first” when it comes to the elite specs. Like rangers rediscover the secrets of being a druid when they return to the Maguuma jungle, but there’s no “first ranger to be a druid in centuries” thing. Marjory wasn’t the first necromancer to wield a greatsword, either; that honour goes to Trahearne and his Caladbolg. Braham only started wielding his mother’s longbow long after Mordremoth’s death, at which point many guardians were drawing back their bowstrings. I don’t really want to go through all 8 (ignoring the revenant for what should be obvious reasons) elites, but I think I’ve made my point.

[Suggestion] Dodge arena

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rognik.2579

I think what would be better is having the player in the arena and there are a bunch of telegraphed dangers (red circles, charging arrows, giants smashing) and a couple of safe areas where endurance could be recovered. Also optional is that you could have skills that are directional dodges, as some professions have skills that allow her to dodge. That would be slightly more accurate of in-game scenarios where you’d need to dodge incoming attacks.

So, Order of Whispers canon (spoilers)

in Living World

Posted by: Rognik.2579

Rognik.2579

The obvious thing to me would be when Demmi is first introduced in Regrouping with the Queen – non Whispers members should have a longer introduction to explain who she is as they may not have met her before. She mentions she’s Caudecus’ daughter, but if you don’t know she defected and joined the Order of Whispers it seems a bit weird that everyone is so willing to trust her.

Queen Jennah says that Demmi is a trusted friend. That quieted Anise’s complaints about having “the daughter of the villain” come along, but it might also have been part of why she came along on this mission. (Killing Caudecus was also on her mind.) I’m pretty sure most people would trust Demmi after having the Queen vouch for her, considering what we know of Jennah’s actions even just in this chapter. More would’ve been redundant.

Also, I think if Demmi and a Whispers agent acknowledged knowing each other, it would kind of blow open the whole secret spy organization concept they have going. One-Drink Drake returns in Lake Doric, but I don’t think he has any special dialogue for people who met him in their personal story, either. (Admittedly, you were disguised as a pirate at the time…)

Rognik.2579

I have finally recreated (mostly anyway) my HoT-beta-era Revenant and since she’s human, I started playing the human storyline again. I definitely didn’t remember being told in the starting cinematics that the character leaves DR to look outside and be of help and that’s how they found Shaemoor in such dire state (then again, my first character was pretty long ago…) — so dunno, maybe they did change the text at some point to make it clear why you’re in Shaemoor outrunning centaurs?

Nope! It’s always said that. There are lots of little bits you might miss if you’re not paying attention, or things you’ll catch once you’re farther into the game and know that this or that is going to be important.

I am getting a bit confused by some of these replies though, there seems to be mixed messages with some people saying I have to play as a different type of character to get the full story, while others say I don’t need to play as anyone else.
Some people have mentioned that important plot points are told in “dungeon” missions. I didn’t know anything like that existed, how do I find those kids of missions in the game?

It depends on how much of the back story you want to learn. If you want to catch all the story threads that were seeded early into the game, you need to play the various background stories, but there can be a coherent story without it. As for the dungeons, as you leveled up, you should have gotten mail from a mysterious stranger telling you about them. You can find all 8 dungeons on the world map by looking for the double doors. They are, in order of level progression: Ascalon Catacombs (Plains of Ashford), Caudecus’s Manor (Queensdale), Twilight Arbor (Caledon Forest), Sorrow’s Embrace (Dredgehaunt Cliffs), Citadel of Flame (Fireheart Rise), Honor of the Waves (Frostgorge Sound), Crucible of Eternity (Mount Maelstrom) and Ruins of Arah – which is part of Victory or Death.

Aparantly I have to play things in order to understand the plot, though I thought I was since all I’ve been doing is following the little map pointer which tells me where to go. I guess it’s possible that I’ve been doing things out of order but I’m not sure how if it’s automated on the map.

Well, if you’re just going from point to point, barely listening to the story, of course you’re going to be lost and confused. The staff wanted Tyria to feel like a living world, and let players explore rather than run from quest giver to quest giver as they have in most other MMOs. As far as order goes, so long as you head from low-level zones to higher level zones, you’re progressing in time until you reach the level cap, which then requires a bit of wiki research to see what was added when. You should try talking to some of the NPCs who aren’t just named “Villager” or are trying to kill you. You’d be surprised what some of them have to say.

The seasons which people have been bringing up seems to be in a gem store but I haven’t found one of those yet in game. I’ve only found ones which accept coins/karma points, unless it’s a web store on the GW2 website somewhere which I’m missing.

Someone said that since I’ve completed the main story I already know who Trahearne is, but I don’t have the slightest clue, so that’s one of many things which I will be looking up later as I sort through the above links.

One last thing. Some people referenced something called LA, what does that mean?

Someone already answered these, but I’ll do it again for completion sake.
*The gem store is in the game and known as the Black Lion Trading Post. By default, it is bound to “O”. Once that menu is open, the first tab is the gem store, where you need gems (either by paying real money, or by exchanging quite a bit of gold), the second is the exchange, and the third is the player-based exchange. If you haven’t been selling your loot through this, I’m surprised and impressed, as this is where goods are really exchanged.
*Trahearne is that rather bland-talking sylvari you meet on Claw Island, then is constantly with you for the rest of the Personal Story. He gets named Marshal of the Pact, wields the blade Caladbolg, and is a necromancer trying to cleanse Orr. He is also the eldest Firstborn, one of the first 12 sylvari to have been born of the Pale Tree. If you head into the instanced area of Fort Trinity (I forget what it’s called right now), he should probably still be there.
*LA is the short form of Lion’s Arch, the same way some refer to Divinity’s Reach as DR. I think that’s more forum and map chat shorthand than any in-game lore you missed.
