Which mastery skills are required in HoT?

The masteries you HAVE to have to complete the campaign are: Gliding up to Updrafts, Itzel Lore up to Bouncing Mushrooms, Exalted Lore up to Exalted Markings, and Nuhoch Lore up to Nuhoch Wallows. All other masteries are unnecessary to finish the story, but are needed if you want to get map completion and other collection-related achievements.

Also, I want to point out that Nuhoch Lore doesn’t unlock until you enter Tangled Depths, so if you find you can’t do that yet, that’s why.

So, Order of Whispers canon (spoilers)

Rognik.2579

So my character is a charr Whispers member (he’s an elementalist, yeah for some odd reason my thief is in Vigil and my warrior is in Priory, go figure :P).

Nothing odd about that! All the Orders need members from all walks of life. Defy the usual convention!

But for some odd reason there’s no single throwaway line that Demmi is with the Whispers or that she recognizes me. I guess it can’t be helped, you are forced to pick a race at the start of the game, but you can reach LS3 without picking an Order. Still, I take it the dialog is the same regardless right?

There may not be a voiced line, but one of the letters in Caudecus’s Manor mentions that Demmi was first kidnapped by the Jackdaws, then another that she was hiding with the other Whispers members.
As for a throwaway line, I believe both the Vigil and the Whispers members respond to her comment on how to get past the Jade Constructs. Not quite what you might have been hoping for, but it wasn’t totally ignored, either.

Does this mean if say, I didn’t go with Whispers, it’s safe to assume Demmi became the “clutch” of Tybalt which normally befalls on the player character? If so, I wonder what killed Tybalt. Or do we subscribe to all three mentors were in Claw Island harboring different players/commanders at the same time? :P

Again, going back to the letter in Caudecus’s Manor, it seems that all of the Personal Story options happened at the same time, but if it wasn’t you doing it, it was another hero of Tyria. Tybalt would have still rescued Demmi and taken her into the Whispers operation, and then he died, probably around the same time our other mentor died on Claw Island.

I’ve always wondered why Tybalt was so special and not Forgal and Sieran?

Tybalt was a fan favourite, while Forgal and Sieran never really had the same fan following. As such, Tybalt gets the pandering while the other two are merely footnotes. In this particular instance, though, it feels appropriate to have Demmi talk about Tybalt.

While we’re at it, why don’t we burn all the sylvari who are merely mordrem servants who have yet to go bad? Oh, wait, they seem to be better now that we’ve killed Mordremoth.

Other flaws in this statement:

  • Was she really draining the life out of Trahearne? Would she have willingly killed one of her Firstborn just to rejuvenate herself? Also, it’s been over a year since her death and yet she continues to improve.
  • The Avatar is merely a projection, not a separate entity. The other races were uncomfortable that the Pale Tree didn’t have a face, so she created the Avatar to more easily speak with the other races. Possessing the Commander would mean killing the entire Grove. Unless you’re talking about killing the Commander by leeching its power, in which case, I’m pretty sure Necromancers can block that kind of drain.
  • What if my Commander never killed Mordremoth, hmm? Did the Pale Tree consider that in her plan?

Besides, it’s probably the easiest ascended weapon to get at the moment. I think the reward is worth whatever price you might be suggesting.

Expecting players to horde and hold onto an ugly rare gs is a problem in itself.

Except no one expected people to horde onto it — there’s an option to get it back (which I chose, since, like you, I didn’t hold onto an ugly GS; I forged it instead).

Broken Caladbolg isn’t an ugly rare GS. It’s an ugly rare sword. I just had to point that out. Carry on!

  • Not everything icebrood is actually named “Icebrood” or “Corrupted”. Anet writers tend to have inconsistencies (“Svanir” in Bitterfrost Frontier, anyone? Why not call them for what they are: “Icebrood”).

I don’t think those Svanir were Icebrood yet, at least not fully. The shaman who was running the operation (and also the heart vendor) was very intelligent, something I don’t think any Icebrood has demonstrated in any capacity. Also, if the armor is good enough to disguise my asura as a Svanir, it’s possible their bodies hadn’t fully undergone the ritual to turn them into Icebrood. That’s my theory until we learn more about Jormag’s minions.

Of course, this entire post is off-topic, as it doesn’t really address the dragon magic theory, but I’m betting the next chapter will cover more of this as Taimi reveals what she’s learned about Primordus’s and Jormag’s energies.

Can elemental possess a body/living creature?

in Lore

Posted by: Rognik.2579

Rognik.2579

An elemental is basically one of the four elements taking solid form due to a build up of magic, as I understand it. I don’t believe the elemental itself has a lot of power (outside of a few exceptions), and I don’t think any of the various asura krewes we encounter have done anything like you describe, but I suppose it’s not outside the realm of possibility.

Is Taimi smarter than Snaff?

in Lore

Posted by: Rognik.2579

Rognik.2579

I think the main reason that Taimi seems smarter than everyone else is because she’s the token asura in Dragon’s Watch – at least, if you aren’t also playing an asura. She’s the one dedicated to research, so she’s the behind-the-scenes brain that explains to your character what’s going on, since you’re too busy running around everywhere saving the world to do this yourself. It has been a bit of a pet peeve of mine, considering I tend to play an asura for the initial story steps, that my own character doesn’t ever seem to do asuran research or anything of the like while Taimi lists off a bunch of things your asura character probably knows. (Although when Rata Novus is revealed, asuran PCs do demonstrate they know about it without changing any other dialogue. Props where props are due.)

Grawl and bloodstone

Rognik.2579

I’m not not talking about a shard, I’m talking about a full on bloodstone
A 50 meter radius giant disc with red glowing patterns and giant spires of bloodstone crystal. A grawl’s gotta be enticed by it.

I disagree with that. Bloodstones may be 50 meters in diameter, but they’re embedded in the ground. Grawl are attracted to tall objects, such as the crystals in Ascalon or statues like Badazar or Chokocooka, but would look at a rock in the ground, however large intricate, and look down on it – both literally and figuratively. So if one of the bloodstones were found by grawl, I’m pretty sure they’d just move on without desire to worship it.

However, as I type this out, I realize it’d be a very skritt thing to worship a big Shiny in the ground. And I fear very much the next time we find a bloodstone that it’ll be infested by skritt.

Did you used to play a norn but play a human now? That could account for the apparent growth of the character. Overall, though, I don’t believe they have changed sizes (except for Taimi, who is still a teenager but now older).

As a side note, there used to be a subforum for the various races, but I think they were removed after there wasn’t enough traffic in them to justify their continued existence.

Why are Current Events character-bound?

in Living World

Posted by: Rognik.2579

Rognik.2579

If your complaint is that you need to complete Hearts and Minds to begin this storyline, I think it’s a fair requirement. The Broken Caladbolg is an end-game spoiler, while Eir’s death (which kicks off Season 3) happens at the end of Act 1, which isn’t that high a barrier for players to reach as a spoiler. While completing the final battle is an issue for another thread, it can easily be done in a group and many have done it solo.

If your complaint is about the sword being soulbound to another character, that is a separate complaint altogether. I agree that it probably should’ve been an account-bound only weapon, which does not soulbind upon equip, but be glad that you could even get another copy of it. A lesser game would not have allowed that option for those who did as you did or deleted it outright. Plus, with so much money floating around in the game, spending some to get Elonian Wine to get the sword back is a small price to pay.

Either way, I don’t really sympathise with your plight. It’s nice that they added this event at all, even so long after HoT’s release and the general feedback about it has been pretty positive up until this post, so I’m not sure I see the problem here. Are you hurting for gold so much that 2.5 gold breaks your bank? Or is it just the fact that the sword is bound to another character and you wish you could’ve transferred it over?

Just remove that stupid special button thingie that doesn’t add anything of value to the gameplay, and that’s all.

They added the special action button first for raids, then with the first level of Ancient Magics mastery. I kind of like being able to use it for different enemies (although Jade constructs are still a pain), and if you don’t like the key it is bound to, it’s quite easy to change it to another one. The initial battle did require reactions that were far too short to be practical, but that got tuned down after the day one fix.

Grawl and bloodstone

in Lore

Posted by: Rognik.2579

Rognik.2579

I don’t think this is plausible. While there is that one event in Wayfarer Foothills that has a norn set up a new statue for the grawl to worship, no one ever tells the grawl “This is your new god! Worship it!” It has to be a grawl shaman to persuade his followers to worship a god – which is far from a difficult task. But a single bloodstone shard wouldn’t be enough to get grawl to worship it. It either needs to be a statue of some sort, or some other impressive display. If the other bloodstones are anything like the one we saw back in the Maguuma Jungle in GW1, it’s not that impressive and the grawl wouldn’t worship it.

If a Son of Svanir really wanted to turn grawl to the power of Jormag, they either keep making dragon statues (which a few tribes do worship), or just turn them all to Icebrood. They wouldn’t need a bloodstone, and really don’t need an elaborate plot to convince them.

Asura Age vs Size

in Lore

Posted by: Rognik.2579

Rognik.2579

While I don’t have any hard evidence, I’m pretty sure there are some physically attractive traits for asura, but they aren’t necessarily the primary source of attractiveness. They frequently discuss the size of asuran ears, so I’m certain that factors in somehow, perhaps as an indicator of how intelligent an asura is (even if it’s a false association).

I don’t think asura love lives are explored that often. The Dynamics college personal story discusses a bit about an asura who loves another, if I remember the story properly, but it’s been a long time since I’ve played that line, so I don’t remember much about their relationship except that it didn’t really have a happy ending.

As for the original question, which I don’t think was ever answered, asura seem to age at a rate similar to humans. When I asked a similar question months ago, I didn’t really get an answer other than that, either.

Revenant and lore

I have a follow up question to this: Revenants do not have racial skills. I believe a dev said it was for balance reasons, but is there anything lore related? Has a norn revenant lost the favour of the Spirits, á la Jora in the good old days?

I wouldn’t think so. By extension, the humans would forfeit their ties to the Six, and the asura forfeit their… research? My guess is that connecting with long-dead spirits requires dedication, which means no time to get involved in the cultural elements. Or something to that effect.

Rognik.2579

The worst chapter of the new content, is Confessor’s End in Lake Doric. The difficulty level is ridiculous! The final battle in the Lower Chamber is an awful design! I know that many highly skilled players, equipped with the best Legendary weapons and armor have managed to succeed, but average players like me, equipped with normal Exotic gear and weapons, just get killed again and again in a horrible loop of death. This is not fun!

I am an average player who only has exotic gear and extremely casual in play style, but I managed to muddle through the entire encounter by myself. Twice. On the first day, yes, it was terrible. The Jade Constructs coming in are unwelcome sights, and there were so many circles on the floor, there was nowhere to stand that was ever safe. It got a lot better after that battle got patched. Have you tried it since? It’s still not easy, but it’s bearable. I went from being defeated 6 times to only being downed a couple. It is doable, but you need to figure out what to do in a fairly quick amount of time.

Well, one early question I feel should be “what are you currently using?” Knowing what you currently run, and how much you enjoy it is an important starting point. Do you have all the pets unlocked? Do you have any crafting skills on your ranger, or on any of your other characters? Are you just open world, or do you do any dungeons/fractals? What’s your preferred playstyle? Have you fully unlocked the Druid trait tree?

One generic tip I would give is you should always have one melee weapon and one ranged weapon equipped at all time. Being able to switch from one to the other allows you to keep going when an enemy gets too close/far away, or throws up a skill that reflects/absorbs projectiles.

But I agree, the Brand is much more desolate and foreboding than Seared Ascalon was.

Sea of Sorrows also has plaques that were added primarily to Lion’s Arch as a tie-in achievement to the book’s release.

Also has Livia in it, but that is more relevant to GW1 players, as she doesn’t show up in GW2 as of yet.

then why is Marjory a more likely possibility than Joko or Livia?
I mean.. those two are solid options, Marjory isn’t an option at all

Joko is not a valid theory, no matter what you might think. He has his own army down in the Desolate Wastes, and he’d need a very, VERY good reason for crossing a continent to pose as a long-dead mursaat.

Livia is a bit more valid, but I don’t see her posing as Lazarus. People point out that she was a member of the Shining Blade, so I find it hard for her to accept using the White Mantle as anything but target practice. I don’t believe she’s ever shown any evidence of knowing mesmer magic, and despite the illusion Faren we find in Confessor’s End, I feel like a crossdressing illusion would be much harder to maintain than one closer to the original form.

Lazarus isn’t Palawa Joko or Livia. I don’t know who he is, or if he is even a fake, but the discovery will certainly be interesting.

Thesis ALPHA OMEGA: Lazarus is Palawa Joko

I think it’s more likely that Lazarus is Livia.

I think Marjory being Lazarus is more likely than either of these theories.

Palawa Joko is still ruling over Elona, last we heard, and I doubt he’s crossed the desert all the way to the Maguuma Jungle – the entire opposite end of the Tyrian continent – just to… what, fight the dragons? Take over the White Mantle? He’s got an undead army, he doesn’t need a living one as well.

Everyone wants to see Livia’s return, and while I don’t doubt that she still is out there in the game, somewhere, waiting for a chance to return, I don’t think she’s using mesmer magic at all (although if she really is Anise, I’m totally wrong on that front). How and when she’ll return, I don’t know, but I don’t want her to be posing as a mursaat to do so.

  • Second, she’s somehow manipulating others by them having the idiot ball (for example, how can dozens if not hundreds pass by an obvious door with a dragon head sign, how we figured out it was the dragon lab, and not know about the dragon lab?).

It’s been a while since I played the instance, but I can think of a couple of reasons. Some might be contradicted by the instance itself, but I don’t feel like replaying it at the moment just to find corroborating evidence.

  1. I believe she locked the door, so it’s not easy to open. If asked about it, she might have told them that there is nothing beyond it or that there was a cave-in, destroying what was beyond it.
  2. She could’ve masked the dragon logo on the door, hiding it from the others.

Then, of course, she’s somehow getting help from dozens of asura who are putting their lives on the line in a very literal sense when by all rights of the race should be more concerned with their own personal progression and discoveries rather than being a footnote on Taimi’s (aka all the Ember Bay asura who are betraying Phlunt to kiss Taimi’s behind in the teenager’s research).

The asura doing research in Ember Bay could easily be furthering their own careers by making the discovery before she does. In the case of the caldera krewe, I think one of them is testing out their giant golem to ensure it works, and maintain the safety of the others researching in the area. Nobody said the asura can’t multitask.

If C, which heal less than A and B is applied at T07 for 30 secs, only 30 – 13 secs = 17 secs of C will be inserted in the stack at T20.

But if C heal more than A and less than B, then C, starting from the end of B, will extend A which has already been extended by B, but A will not count for the duration of C. Correct ?

No, C will keep running for 30 seconds. but may not be applied until after both A and B have expired (if I understand it properly). The timing is never cut short, unless someone strips you of boons or you die.

The final fight wasn’t quite as bad as people made it out to be. Yes, the first time I ran it, I died several times (a rarity for me on end bosses), but I managed to finish it in part by switching armors I had going into the fight. I agree the room was far too cramped for the fight in which AOEs appeared constantly at the edge of the room. They did tone it down after the patch, and it was much more bearable.

One thing that I think might be the problem (just a guess) is that some people are going into the fight full melee. After running Ascalon Catacombs once, I realized it was a wise idea to always bring at least one ranged weapon. Swapping from a ranged weapon to a melee weapon also allows for surprise close encounters to be more manageable.

The biggest problem with the item in question is that Zhaitaffy, one of the key ingredients, will not drop in the game ever again. And each time someone makes one of these starcakes, more and more of the Zhaitaffy disappear. Bringing back Dragon’s Bash would help this, but as it was part of Season 1’s Living World updates (and on the old LA map mainly, to boot), this would require a lot of dev work to update to the current map. I would rather the staff be working on new content than reviving a festival they did only once.

Also, if your “build” is so dependent on this one item that it doesn’t work without it, maybe you should reconsider your build. I’m not saying you should go to the meta builds, but find some other, more easily reproducible food that can be sustained. So you can’t have the absolute best item for your strategy. Either your strategy is flawed, or you need to work around it. (For the record, I do NOT have the recipe unlocked. In fact, there are quite a few lost recipes I’d like to have access to but can’t because Reasons.)

Finally, why is this in the HoT forum? It has absolutely nothing to do with the expansion, or LWS3! It should be in the General Discussion.

If you want, you can add me to your friend list. I’m always happy to have a new friend to run around Tyria with. To do so, just add my user name (with the .XXXX) to your friends list (default: Y) and it should pop up. (I say this just in case you aren’t aware how.) As for the guild, though, there are a few options:
*Try the “Looking For” forum in the community section. There are tons of guilds advertising for new members there.
*Go to any starting zone or city and watch map chat for guild invites. People are constantly advertising, so it’s easy enough to find one you might like.
*Talk to your friends and see if any of their guilds have an opening. I don’t know if you have any RL friends who play, but the people you travel with will surely be more than happy to find you a guild or three.

That’s the other thing: you can have up to 5 guilds per account, so don’t be afraid to join one right away and feel trapped. If you don’t like a guild, you can later leave it, or just neglect it until you find at least 4 others that you do like.

…we get mad at the murder, whom we were going to stomp a mudhole in anyway? We can’t even say the victim got Fridged to set up the Revenge Plot, because we were already going to stab it. So, the death comes off as pretty meaningless.

I don’t think that’s why that person was I killed. I believe that death was so that someone else who was previously our enemy would change sides. I mean, that other person joined before the other dies, but the attack is what inspires the change. (Man, English does NOT accommodate anonymous references well.)

I skimmed through this conversation, noting that most people are saying the exact same thing over and over again, so I’ll try and add a few other things that have been skipped over:

*Not all of the GW2 story is told through the Personal Story. There are 6 starting storylines for each race, a single story about how to deal with a race-specific threat with branching information, the three order plotlines (with 5 minor race stories, partially dependant on race) and the Orr storyline, which also branches slightly. Even if you played all of that, though, some of the storytelling is done through the events and NPCs related to it. I remember there’s a Statue to Dwayna out there, hidden away, that if you kneel at it, a ghost will pop up. Some of the story is hidden there. Just bulldozing through the story, only partially paying attention, will definitely confuse you if you jump straight into Heart of Thorns (HoT).

*There is a story journal tab on the Hero Panel (default H, the one with the star) that tells you all the chapters of the main game chapters, as well as the Living World (LW) stuff. You’ll see that there were 8 chapters to Season 2, and we got the 4th chapter of season 3 a week ago. It also slots HoT in between those two, so you can instantly tell the chronological order of the stories.

*I hope you didn’t skip over the dungeons. Even if all you do is story mode for all 8 of them, it will still tell you things about the main overarching plot that isn’t really mentioned later, especially during the final dungeon instance.

*If you have specific lore-related questions, try asking them in the Lore section of the forums. The people there eat, sleep and breathe this stuff, and know it inside and out. They don’t know everything, because ANet doesn’t TELL us everything, but that’s also half the fun.

Taimi has long been fascinated with Scarlet, and let’s face it, if Scarlet hadn’t been trying to kill everyone (for reasons that had to have been beyond reviving Mordremoth), she could’ve been a powerful ally. She was a powerful inventor, a trait more asura really ought to have been admiring. And let’s face it, taking inventions too far is so completely in character with the asura race in general. Nothing she’s doing is out of character, but we may be losing our tech support if this goes badly.

I suppose that really depends on what you’re looking for. I have to admit, while I played this game almost daily upon release, at this point, I mostly only log in for the new story patches and then go on hiatus until the next one. There may be a lot of things I still have to do, like collect all the journal entries from Bloodstone Fen, or finish off my HoT pet collection, but those things only nominally interest me.

However, I’m a sucker for the store and the lore that goes into this game. I’m enthralled every time new story comes out. And right now, I’m just as curious as everyone else as what the next plot twist will reveal. That is where I mostly get my enjoyment out of this game.

So what is boring you so? Are the new maps just not interesting you? Are the Living Story chapters not challenging enough? What are you looking for? Answer that, and it might come to you soon enough.

OK, so a minister that could be running organized crime and has Separatist leanings certainly is safe from White Mantle attacks, especially if he didn’t interact with Caudecus. (He probably did because, let’s face it, Caudecus is to blame for every ill in Kryta at the moment.) The assault would probably be a welcome distraction for him, as it means most eyes aren’t going to be on him, distracted with Lake Doric and the WM in general. As far as attitudes go, I imagine he’d be pretty smug as people probably won’t be paying attention to him. If there is some collateral damage such as damaged buildings or wounded citizens, he could be helping to repair it to further throw off investigations from him. Even if the city proper is safe, Lake Doric certainly isn’t and the citizens could use any assistance offered to them.

As I said in my previous post, he’ll have lost most of his political power with Jennah suspending the Ministry for the time being. I’d view this as prorogation, where the Ministers are dismissed but will probably be called back once the White Mantle threat is established to be properly cleansed from Divinity’s Reach. This could be a good thing for your heroes, as he is now somewhat more vulnerable.

Hopefully, that helps frame the situation in a way that will continue your RP. I’d probably talk to those involved if you want to establish a consensus on what’s going on after this chapter. Feel free to send me a PM, either on the forum or in-game, if you want more ideas on what he could be doing. I could even take over the role if people don’t mind, and the sessions line up with my own schedule.

A mesmer did it. Mesmers are the cause of every plot hole.

Prosperity wasn’t a White Mantle stronghold, I think. It was a remote city and had citizens who were less than scrupulous, but I don’t think they were necessarily tied to the Mantle. Then again, that one guy who got strangled did have a Caudecus-style beard…

What is Minister Caudecus' profession?

Caudecus is definitely not a mesmer, or if he is, he isn’t good enough to be using portals. No way would he be barking at Valette at the end of Episode 1 if he could do that himself. His fireplace is probably enchanted to open the portal to his personal dungeon, which is how he could escape that way.

The blurred teleport doesn’t really mean anything, as several classes have teleporting abilities, like the guardian, the thief and, yes, mesmer. What his style of teleporting is, I have no clue, but it’s annoying.

As many people have said above, though, NPCs aren’t bound to any one profession, or even the same restrictions the PCs are. So his profession? Dolyakhole.

It would only have been disturbing if that had been a male Mesmer and the subject were Kasmeer or Anise or something. Exploitation of men is not problematic. Nor is that hypocritical. Nor does that last sentence simply not understand what “hypocritical” means. I think.

I think I hear some double standards going on here. I agree that would be received worse if it were a male mesmer with any female character in a similar situation, but it’s still kinda bad. Not to mention there was a treasonous minister with 3 villager women in another room, so the devs were not exactly sexist that way.

Somebody made a huge profession/race survey in reddit some time ago. In the results of that poll it shows that Norn Thieves are the most rare combo, followed by charr mesmer, charr elementalist and Norn Engineer.

My charr is a necromancer, but is it weird that I have a norn thief and a norn engineer?

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I usually leave a reply to let you all know you weren’t just typing for no reason but forgot!! I am leveling a ranger currently and then will use the boost for an alt. Or maybe a main if it turns out I don’t like ranger

Even if you end up not liking ranger, I recommend that you don’t delete character. If you’re a collector like I am, the ranger is the only way to complete the pet collection in the game. And there are a lot of pets for rangers to tame in the core game alone.

I also recommend you play your character manually until you complete the level 60 personal story. Why level 60? Because after that is when the story lines converge. By that point, you would have completed 2 of the racial specific story paths for one race, and one of the three Orders path. Each chapter offers different story elements, so if you enjoy lore, doing a wide variety of paths is the best way to do so.

Can't decide on main...

I notice that you’ve only mentioned 4 characters so far, which means there’s still room for one more. If you don’t feel that you like any of the classes you’ve done so far, you could always try again fresh with a new character, perhaps a sylvari ranger or an asura elementalist. Experiment a little, and see which class you feel most comfortable with. Or just go with one of the other classes you already have and see if you have more fun with them. GW2 is pretty unique in that it almost encourages you to make alts, level them up, and do all the story lines at least once. There are so many interconnecting bits scattered in the early story that your average player completely misses because they either exclusively play one story line, or only did the personal story on one or two characters. For instance, in the charr story Honorless Gladium, your father recovers a Balthazar relic that is later used during the Priory defense quest; or the various NPCs that you meet early on that come back, like the asura who uses a giant hologram to fight.
