This. Ranger is insanely mobile in combat, which is all that matters really.

tool tip does in fact say against monsters. But yes the only way to really test it would be to do it right after reset.

but i assume that with the trinity you can actually create fun, challenging and balanced content with way less work compered to the time anet have to spent in order to make the same content fitting for their systemAnd you can’t without trinity? I’m thinking it’s more to do with anet designers than lack of trinity. Games like dark souls (active gameplay) are popular, challenging and fun to play.
The problem is that often GW2 just took the trinity, gutted out tanks and healers and just left DPSs in, in a tank and spank scenario. So you just end up with everyone spanking, which isn’t exactly fun.
and sitting there AFK with Macro for Aggro management and healing is???
Guild Wars 2 “trinity” being Damage, control and support is VERY much in use. Myself and many people that I know use it every single day

Per-hit, true, but necro dagger attacks so much faster that it does have the superior DPS.
i have never seen a dagger necro deal anywhere near the damage that a warrior can do with greatsword and i play both, power necro is one of my favourite characters.

I’m still somewhat vexed by a few of the more bizarre notions circulating in this thread. Hopefully, I will be able to help some of the more misguided notions.
Character Building
Your “playstyle” is defined foremost by your weapon choices, skill choices and traits. If you choose utility skills of a support nature, along with melee weapons and use traits that give defensive benefits to your team, you are a support melee character. If you choose offensive boosting skills, ranged weapons and DPS boosting traits, you are a ranged DPS character. These things are true regardless of your gear prefix. Again, who you are is defined by your weapon choice, skill choice and trait choices.
The second component of character build, gearing, has nothing to do with playstyle. Gearing is a measure of the damage you expect to be unable to avoid in your chosen game mode. Additionally, gearing is primarily how you determine whether you will be direct damage or condition damage. But the primary function of gearing is an estimate the amount of damage you anticipate you will need to soak in your chosen content. If you feel you will be able to dodge every attack you would select a gearing that sacrifices passive defense for more offense. Alternatively, if you feel you will receive large amounts of unavoidable damage you would be well advised to bring gear with more passive defense. The only aspect of gearing that determines playstyle is direct vs condition damage.
What is a character in defensive (soldiers) gear with dps skills and dps traits? A dps character. What is a character in offensive gear (berserkers) with defensive support traits and defensive support skills? A defensive support character.
With that out of the way as an established fact, let’s debunk some of the weaker arguments in this thread…
“Build Diversity”: Since playstyle is determined by everything EXCEPT gear, the concept of changing a gear type to encourage different playstyles is literally an absurdism. If you want to actually make defensive support builds more viable, you have to change the things that actually affect the playstyle: traits and skills. Or change the content to make healing/boon duration more useful, but that runs the risk of creating a trinity system where teams require a specific profession using a specific build to complete content, which has a problem all its own.
“Stacking”: Nothing to do with gearing. Even if Apothecary gear became meta, stacking would still be done in places where stacking is done. This is not a gearing issue.
“Zerker trivializes content”: Depends. There are a few bosses who are killed very quickly with fiery greatswords and berserker gear in such a way that their mechanics are skipped. There are also other bosses that aren’t, or aren’t outside of a very organized group. This is partially a content issue, partially a downscaling issue, and partially a fiery greatsword issue. Very little of it has to do with berserker gear itself. In fact, I would argue that Fiery Greatsword is the biggest culprit. The damage it is capable of is so far beyond the scope of everything else that it allows even the least skilled players the ability to speed run certain dungeons. If fiery greatsword was nerfed, it is entirely likely that many people who are being carried by it would go back to complaining about dungeons being too difficult.
“The content is too easy”: No, the content is too old. I assure you, the first time you did Arah path 1 in September of 2012 was not as fast as it is done now, even if you are an elite dungeon runner now. Arah is very, very hard. Drop a new player into Arah with no experienced teammates and no video guides and suboptimal builds. He will fail very hard. In fact, drop the same player into any of the dungeons and they will likely struggle mightily. The content isn’’t too easy, it’s just too old. Even the more challenging raids in other games go on farm after two years of existence. The type of raid that took progression guilds two weeks to beat the first time around are facerolled by pugs after two years once the builds and strats are known. This is how MMO goes. If you want to decrease the berserker population, add brand new dungeons that don’t have established guides and community tactics yet and watch the casual berserker users put on defensive gear, or avoid the content altogether.
Gold is still in the bank, and the Gem store prizes of course are still available.

Its a fun thing to really start to look at the “deeper” mechanics. and play. At least for me. you start to notice alot of little things in all of the encounters you have. be it in a solo setting or group.
For me it has been a frustrating ( in a good way) experience to almost have to “re learn” everything you thought you knew. And for that matter the level of respect that at least I have developed for all of the players that came before me. and have constantly offered advice and council on how to be “just a little bit better”

If I had to pick a “tournament format” here is what I would do.
7 dungeons = 128 teams (multiple guilds can enter multiple teams). Teams are seeded 1-128.
Rules: Defeated = no waypoint, you’re done. You can be hard-ressed if someone wants to take the time to do it. Time wipe = GG no RE, you’re done tournament over. If you opposition wipes in p2 and you wipe in p3, you win since you progressed further. Restricted rules, timer starts when the first person moves in p1. Timer ends when the XP pop for the last boss in the final path of the dungeon dies. Restricted rules for consumables, exploits etc. Once person from each team must live stream, if only one person streams and the stream dies, counts as a party wipe. If both teams finish without wiping, lowest timer wins and advances to the next round
Round of 128 – AC
Round of 64 – CM
Round of 32 – TA (no atherpath)
Sweet 16 – SE
Elite 8 – CoF
Final 4 – CoE
Finals – ArahLast rule, paths must be done in sequential order, i.e. p1 must be done first, p4 last.
I imagine doing this over two weekends would be good since that is a lot of paths to run in one day.

Super excited about the idea. I really do think it would be a lot of fun. I would strongly suggest Having a handful or couple of people that are the “ones in charge” so that all of the information and suggestions have a direction and ultimately a level head about what can or should be implemented
Keep the format simple. such as a bracketed double elim. or something along those lines. it will save you as organizers a metric ton of headache and also it will be easier for the teams to understand too.
Unless Arena Net can program some kind of spectator mode on short notice. I would plus one a hub of some sort. even if its a brand new website. either decide on a preferred streaming program, (twitch) or whatever and make it up to the teams to get it. call it cost of entry if you will. If the website set up can support more than one program at a time even better.
Choose paths that do not have an in path time gate if at all possible. or at least a very minimal one. Aether path is VERY time gated. by cutscenes etc. i strongly suggest leaving that path out of the runs. Ac path 3 essence collection is also time gated but to a lesser extent, and could be added to the rotation if you felt it needed.
There should be gambits in this. as where as that is what will ultimately make it challenging in some regards. But keep them reasonable. these should be challenging. not tedious. Example of challenging. would be " CM, no thief allowed" tedious would be “CM, no stealth allowed”.. regardless, use caution when you make the final list. and once you have them clearly define what they are.
Have the two teams load in and be live. and THEN announce the gambit. and they should apply to both teams for that single path. Keep the competition between those two teams and that run alone. Just because team X and Y did this path in 10 min it should have no bearing on team A and B and the gambit making it amount to a 12 min run. Each run is on its own and each bracket and advancement is on its own.

Having Dungeon stats at the end of a dungeon would serve no purpose. And if anything only create even MORE “elitism”. You will have more and more people griefing and being general scumbags over perpetual numbers that in the grand scheme of things mean very little.
That being said.
I would suggest caution good sir, as you have more or less called out the majority of this particular forum. And I can assure you it will not be taken kindly as you are the (insert triple digit number here) person to do so and only succeed in nothing.
It’s not about setting up records, it’s about competing against an other team under unexpected circumstances
I personally think that is kind of what this should be all about.
rather than compare it to say…. a martial arts tourney. ( which would be more akin to PvP )
compare it to… a track race.
But when you get to the starting line with your opponent, they change your car.

The idea of a Tournament would be so very fun and cool. The exact method of enacting it might be a little tricky… However. with what i have seen now vs when i noticed this thread earlier today….
Idea.
Dungeon Madness!!!! (think march madness for NCAA basketball)
Using split screen tech to be able to broadcast 2 teams starting in the same dungeon path. Using GWSCR restricted rule-set. and yes once the teams are in place a “gambit” is thrown in. You will have a set amount of time to adjust strategy as needed and then the timer starts. First Team to complete the run wins the match.
Entry is open to any and all participants with the only caveat being that someone on the team needs to have the stream running.
tournament format will be a Double elimination styled tourney. Winning your match will advance you to the next round. losing will move you to the secondary bracket. Losing your match a second time eliminates you from the tournament.
Opening round is Ascalonian catacombs path 1. (its the one with the least time gate i think)
round 2 is a path in caudecus manor. ( path is up for debate)
round 3 twilight Arbor Forward path.
Round 4 Sorrows Embrace Path 3.
Round 5 Honor of the waves Path 1.
Round 6 Citadel of Flame Path 3
round 7 Crucible of Eternity path 3
Round 8 Arah Path 3
Final round for the championship should be Arah 4
this format can allow for a fair number of teams and if we need more room we can add more paths. or less if there is not enough teams. ( at least if we wanted to function it as a double elim kind of thing )
Gambits can include any number of things.
“no Conjures.”
" “x” class not allowed. "
“no two handed weapons”
“ONLY two handed weapons”
“only ranged weapons.”
“no elite skills”
I am sure we could come up with some pretty strange stuff.
the nice thing about a format like this would be that you are only against the team across your screen. and they have the same restrictions etc. So even if team number 1 gets a slower time than team number 8 it would not matter. you only have to compete against the team across from you.
specifics i am sure we could play around with. And in truth I am hard pressed to say that Arena Net will officially endorse this any time soon. That being said. it should not stop us from perhaps pooling our resources and making it happen on our own. The hard part would be getting the word out to everyone. Not just the dungeon forum regulars. or even the forum as a whole regulars. But I would highly suggest and endorse getting it out to the game as a whole.

I disagree, Ropechef. I don’t believe pulling a monster from their starting point is considered stacking.
Let’s take CoE for example, the first few trash mobs. Common PUG stacking tactic is to pull the first three into the beginning room just around the corner and kill them just around the corner. However, what if 4 players were spread out in the room and all using ranged weapons while the 5th player grabbed a single mob and pulled it out of the hallway and into the room? They’ve pulled the mob out of its “arena”, but if all players maintain a range of 600+ away from each other, have they “stacked” the mob they are fighting?

I believe that what would be constitutes as “stacking” ultimately is derived from the players changing of the playing field, and "taking advantage of “poor mob AI” "
Having done a very large amount of Dungeons that had “no stacking” involved… let me see if i can explain it better…..
The Spider queen of the catacombs. Is by and large considered to be “stacked” on because you will find yourself in an out of the way nook. away from the original spawning point Forcing her to move to you and “denying her the full use of her mechanics”. how do you not stack on her? go to her. do not bring her to you.
the gravelings right after the spider queen. is the same thing. “stacking” would be waiting around the corner of the rubble and bringing the graveling to you. how do you not stack? fight them in the hallway. or at the bottom as the traps in the hallway will kill you before they do.
Kohler. Stacking on kholer again would be changing his regular playing field in by bringing him out of his “arena”. You fight him without stacking by doing it inside his arena
Subject Alpha is considered “stacked” on if you CC him into a wall (( see yes control works))
Ultimately what I believe that so many people have gotten all up in arms over the “stacking Meta” is simply the idea of changing the field of battle. How do you NOT stack? is simply by us as players going TO the boss, in comparison to bringing the boss to you. The argument extends to trash as well. The 4 risen in the begining of Arah 3, you “stack” on them if you are around the corner and bring them to you. the non stacking method would be to go to them and fight them on the rise.
tl;dr
“stacking” is created when the mob comes to you. non stacking would be you going to them.
I know my numbers are small. I said that they would be. Just using them as a point of reference for anyone.

you play a healer so that you can keep the tank alive so that the tank can keep the agro off the DPS.
so the DPS can kill the thing….
you took extra vitality or toughness or whatever so that you could stay alive long enough to kill the thing.

37k hundred blades is -my- personal best. as well as a 13k evicerate
these are just what -I- have seen…. i am sure others have seen other things that would put me to shame

The old one does work but it’s not very flexible (no dps data vs objects) and you can find it on my github, my username there is same as here – frifox, you can probably find it through google. I’m coding a re-worked version that will be flexible and more accurate (down to microseconds, if needed). Atm I’m in the middle of a big project at work but should be done in the middle of this week and will continue working on the new version. I can send you an “alpha” version if you really want it, otherwise just wait a week or so and I’ll share it.
