Try to look up your profession forum, you may find that there are some other ways to play your character, for that you have to have the skills unlocked.

Other than that it’s one of the selling points of the game, no need to race to 80 to do end-game raids.

In addition to Smoothy’s very good list – you can go to Lions Arch (simply go to your PvP button, press go to Heart of the Mist – you will see a portal there to Lions Arch pretty much in front of you) – and from there go through a portal to another capital city and explore the lower level zones.

Good Luck!

In other games you had huge advantages as you always had the best gear available. In this game the difference between exotic and legendary is not a real issue.
As it is only one slot as it is anyways.

So what advantage do I have with tons of gold? None really. Getting a fullruned exotic with weapon and trinkets is around 50g. You don’t need to play the tp to get that amount.
A legenendary is a luxury article primary aquired for the skins- not because it gives you a real advantage.

We are definitely not on the same page here, sorry.
In other games, well at least the ones I think of, the high end stuff came from sources that you could not buy. Some other more expensive options offered certain conveniences, I have always been able to afford them in a foreseeable future – without playing the TP.
That part does not exist here in the same fashion, which is great – the skins are the primary drive here, the high end stuff if you so will.
But again I’m basically told – you don’t need this, you don’t deserve this, if you want it, play the TP like everyone else.
Plus you are overlooking what I said before about gems. But nevermind, I am not here to convince any of you and we are talking in circles (or so I feel).
Let me say this in closing and take it as food for thought – the TP here sort of replaces the daily grind that exists in other games. You cannot even collect much without the TP – be it mini’s or a full dye set.

In the meantime I will continue my travels in Tyria, still got lot’s to do, will try to take my mind off this and evaluate the situation later again for myself.

Wishing everyone fun in Tyria, happy holidays and a happy new year

….

Bottom line – the TP is the number 1 source to make money here, by far and uncontested. Again, perception is key – should I feel obliged to have to use the TP to get anywhere? Why don’t we make PvP the number one moneymaker? Before you answer – this would mean that the TP would not be the number one moneymaker anymore.
…..

In all MMOs I have played the fastest way to make money is the trading post/auction house/galactic market/whatever.

Even if you choose to grind you sell your items not to the NPC for the maximum profit, no you list them on the market. What about crafting, thats a part of the TP as well, as where do you sell your goods…

An MMO lifes from the interaction between players- economies is a part of that interaction. And for that to work even remotely well in MASSIVE multiplayer games you need central institutions like trading posts.

No argument here, but ask yourself what the gold bought you in those other games and what it does here. The gap is simply incredible large and I’ve never seen prices soar like here. Yes, a trading post is vital, did I say anywhere get rid of it entirely?

Never have I said evil nor that I hate or disrespect anyone. Those are facts presented in laymens terms, granted, it has a slight negative touch putting it that way, I am sure the technical term will sound a lot more positive.

What I’m talking about is that the system itself is flawed.

Look at the way it’s presented, sell your items direct out of the bag, tell me what you see. The fact that people use gwspidy should speak volumes alone. “Meet highest buyer” is the default. If you truly want to see more you will have to hop over, search for the item again and check again what you could list it for. But these are all just details of the larger picture.

You know, for a while I thought it’s just me, but all you have to do is read the threads here and you will notice it’s a re-occuring theme.

There should be a TP, absolutely. There should be the opportunity for a trading game. Right now it’s just not reasonable.

Another topic not touched yet is that gold also buys gems, which of course have become unattainable in any reasonable amount for the – as you put it – inefficient player. (There is your unfair advantage, nicely seen at events as well. I would love to believe that people spend hundrets of dollars to open keys, if so good for Anet, but I’m more inclined to believe they are aquired via exchanging gold.)

I love markets, although I like them more in the style of EVE. It has more meaning. The only reason why I did not continue there is because I looked at the training list and it showed me something over 2 real years to train my character. That is their design decision. I will give it some more time to decide for myself what I think the design decision is here.

Anyways, this is starting to affect my enjoyment of the game, I will try to stop thinking about it.

Have fun in the game whichever way you like.

Just roll that on your tongue – a tiny minority who make enourmous amounts of money. And they make it on the backs of the large majority who makes a pittance. Delicious.

Of course that doesn’t affect anyone, nothing to see here. Yummy.

But I am sure you would not have anything against leveling the playing field, because you are telling me that it’s just about playing, right? It would not affect you if all over sudden all the ingredients where reliably farmeable so that there is no need for the TP for those who don’t like to participate there? You see, it would affect you, same as it affects me right now.

Nah, with enough money you don’t even have to be savvy, because your offers don’t expire, there is not enough punishment for abuse. And please stop your talk about free market, this market doesn’t mimic even half of what a real market has, there are no interests and no credits to consider, no seasons (other than the odd “I got all my eggs for christmas” thread), there is no time or distance bridged. It’s artificial.

No I am not an economist – and I don’t have to be. As interesting as many things are they don’t really apply here. The only question you have to ask yourself is if it’s fun for your customers – and maybe ask yourself if you want it to be fun for a tiny minority, or fun for the others. Perception is the key.

If a player finds an epic economic adventure to be fun, who are you to judge them? What does their effort have to do with your experience in the game?

If they go out and cash-shop their way to a legendary, does that matter to you?

I am not judging and quite frankly I do not personally care how ever you aquired what ever you may have. If you check my posting history you may find that stated a few times.

There are only two main ways of “gold” into the “economy”.

Buying gems and converting them – limited by the amount people are willing to spend.
Looting something in game and selling it.

The “third” way that we are talking about here is other players through the TP.

Usually – I am repeating myself – this is none of my business and does not concern me – but here it is the center of everything and as a result it has to concern me in the long run. I am absolutely happy to buy something from the TP from another player who went out there and “farmed” the mithril or whatever. Here, this is no longer the case – because of the nature of the marketplace – you may find a few threads about different main ingredients that you cannot simply farm per se – I am most likely to pay someone who will turn around and will try to sell me something else even more expensive.

See, other games you have to go out and slay mobs for a tiny per cent chance, here you have to throw items (goods you buy for gold) into a big slot machine.

So traditionally you have your raids and stuff and you would have to participate there or do your daily quests etc etc. Anet said we want to break away those traditions and let you play like you want – respect the player and so on. Then it turns out – oh, that’s actually not really the case. Instead replace raids with BLTC. To quote other player comments here on the forums “the real pvp”.

Just because I refuse to play the TP – and as a result of the current state no longer sell my items on the TP either – I am basically punished. Ok, here is an example that I just checked right now for you. About two weeks ago I looked into legendary weapons and made myself a roadmap, the most expensive item: the precursor. Not farmable (unless you tell me where hammers drop on a regular basis) – 160G (the colossus)
Two weeks later, today – 320G.
I made a note for the silver doubloons as well, 75G – now 120G.
Everything farmeable (non NPC) I did not look at the price.

I am not really talking to you personally either, I want Arena Net to start thinking about this. About their maxime, their core values. Not what you and I think is right or wrong – but: Is it fun?

I don’t mean that everyone should have 9500g+, but I do mean one should be rewarded with better loot for killing enemies then we are now. I do not want everyone to be rich, but I do not want those people going out and farming for hours only making the amount of gold someone at the Black Lion could make in minutes.

Wouldn’t work. You are just raising the bar even higher. Inflation. Postings have to expire at the TP, there needs to be more risk at a lower income at the TP, not at the base. The base is designed around NPC prices (well, I would think).

This is the only premise at which I would buy gems and trade them for gold, to pay NPC’s, not other players who in turn make everything even more expensive for others.

And don’t call this social justice. It’s a game. You are completely capable of making vast amounts of money. The fact that you don’t shouldn’t impact another player.
(…)
To hate another player’s preferences because you don’t share them makes no sense to me. How does another person’s success harm you?

The fact that you do shouldn’t impact another player.

I don’t hate anyone, but I do think the system is flawed. The question that Arena Net has to ask themselves again is … is it fun?

Another aspect would be the blog for legendary weapons, quote from here

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/my-legend-grows-forging-your-first-legendary-weapon/

“Legendary Weapons are the end result of an epic adventure in Guild Wars 2. You’ll travel all over, collecting items and amassing materials to build your Legendary Weapon.”

Legendary Weapons are the end result of epic transactions on the BLTC. You’ll flip items all over, collecting your tab and amassing gold to buy your Legendary Weapon.

Exaggeration? Yes. But perhaps there is a grain in there.

What would I pay for 1G? Depends on what I can buy for 1G.
Right now, nothing – plus I’m not paying another player with this considering the current market model.
I bought gems and converted them to gold for a Mad King outfit. Just because I wanted it then and there and the acquisition however much based on luck required the person to participate in the events.

Based on the fixed costs on other current NPC sold items I would say $10 for 100G, so 10 cents per one gold.

But really I would rather have more variety to buy from the store directly for gems.

Why Power Traders Help the Average Player

(…)

Not my fault for taking advantage of the swings and playing the market. I am not ashamed for doing it as a secondary money maker in the background while farming, doing other stuff in the game, or while I am at work.

I just don’t understand the hate against the power trader. Never will.

Ok, I will try to convey some of the notions I have – again, this is nothing against the trader personally.

My premise first and foremost is – play this game for fun, play it your way.

So keep in mind, this is my point of view as a non-economist that anyone may certainly be welcome to make fun off!

I don’t think it’s the trader himself but the concept in an environment in which he does not provide a significant “service” in addition to artificially raising the bar for the long-term goals that exist here combined with the fact that the TP is almost the single viable way of generating income.

Let’s look at this in detail and I will try not to be too long.

It was said that one benefit (the power trader provides) is to get items on the market, people selling products they are sitting on. Ask yourself now why and try to obtain a perspective of people who’s main purpose is not the gold itself, but what it represents. They very likely now sell those products because they need more other items – the prices of those where increased also – no net gain here for Joe Schmoe.

The one things that bugs me personally the most for a while is this official comment

Playing the market is not the only viable way to make gold. Not even close.
(…)

While essential true, it leaves out an important point – other than being forced into one particular style of play, let me call it the flavour of the month – the only viable way is the TP itself. Without selling your items on the TP – take this number with a grain of salt – your average “income” is likely around 0.25G/h.

Not only is the TP the most viable route for income, which is the only real gate for anything is this game – it is also to a very high degree the only source to reliably acquire certain items. Money should most definitely buy you time (not farming yourself etc) – buy you a convenience if you so will – but combined with the mystic forge it borders on being cynical.

This is all very, very new for me btw. Not once in any game have I thought this way, it does not phase me what other people do or have in general. Here it’s a mockery. Mainly because there is no alternative.

I will happily also buy gems with real money to convert them into gold – which is likely the reason for why this economy is the way it is – but I will most definitely not pay other players with it in this current state.

There you go – the reasons are wide and not isolated to just the buy and sell factor – it boils down to the TP being a too central component in itself. Which of course some people don’t see the problem with in the first place – because it is their central focus point as well. Same as I don’t understand some PvP problems – but then I don’t go into PvP threads and tell them off or try to tell them why that is the cats meow.

If this vision, that I perceived looking into this game – the grand idea of adventure and just play your way – is to come true, this has to be addressed and has to be looked at from various angles and not from the economist pov only.

Since nothing vanishes on the TP I am not getting any goods cheaper and faster then I would otherwise. I’m still getting them at the same speed and I’m paying a higher price.

Sure, someone might have sold a bit faster, but at others expense. Let the offers expire so people have to re-list their products and then you can tell me the trader is providing a service.

The consequence that I finally decided to take is not to participate in the TP at all anymore. My goods sell straight to the vendor if I don’t need them. If I am not able to obtain everything I need on my own in the long run (not now, in due time), which I can actually see happening due to the fabulous design of destroying random items to receive another random item – and the fact that fortuna rarely shines on my in this regard – well, then I will have to decide for myself.

It’s sad that there seems to be the need to explain the notion of trading – perhaps think of why that really is – here, in this game – not real world economics.

Just for the record so it doesn’t get lost I will repeat myself again, I have nothing against the person trading, but the system as it works here as a whole. (First game that I have this issue btw.)

How can you pit absolute different games against each other? Doesn’t make sense to me.

This is only about exposure and internet traffic.

Really? Sigh…

There are somethings shared between games that can be judged regardless of their genre; like art direction, story telling, (voice) acting, gameplay, innovation, “fun factor”, etc… People put various weights/emphasis on different categories, there’s no “unified system of judging a game”.

By these metrics, a individual judges which is overall better.

Like seriously…. are you saying that if I handed you Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Duke Nuke Em’ Forever (assuming you had the ability to play both of them), you couldn’t come back to me and say which one was better?

Thank you for anticipating that I do not understand this and for explaining it in detail.

All of the above is certainly true, which is incidentally why I actually read reviews, in particular by people who do that for a living. I compare that with my own experiences and over time I can trust certain sources for myself.

Zelda and Duke eh. Notice your little “if” there? If I handed you. Notice above already a comment “what is dishonoured?”?

Not only are the voters not even required to know the games, they are also forced to chose between genres.

Unless there are categories, perhaps I missed those – the optical design led my simple mind to believe it was more like a tournament. Sort of eliminationish like. Maybe it was the word deathmatch.

Zelda is the best game because of the story.
Scratch that, the Duke has the best lines.

Popularity contest – maybe. Exposure, definitely. Great way to get internet traffic.

Judging art or innovation is not what this is about.

The customers that Anet should be worried about aren’t those who post vocally on the forums, it’s the ones that just shrug and stop playing without ever looking back.

What kind of action would you take based on that? Where would you draw your inspiration on what may or may not have been the reason for those ones to just leave?

High demand, low supply items like lodestones and silver doubloons can be easily manipulated by the rich at everyone else’s expense. DR makes farming these items completely unviable as they are mostly available in 1 or 2 spots, and in the case of lodestones, I might get enough cores to make 1 lodestone in 3 dungeon runs if I’m lucky.

This is exactly the part I’m beginning to have an increasing problem with. Make no mistake, I have nothing against the person behind the screen playing the system – it’s the system itself that is flawed.

A trader here, someone who only buys items off the TP to sell them back later, does not supply any service. There is no time or distance to be bridged for the goods, there is no expiration for items on the TP and the overall risk is rather minimal (of course this part is up for discussion). The farmer is the one who supplies a service to us – and I can’t be sure that I would be paying him either, transactions are anonymous.

Now usually in other games I don’t have a problem with that at all. Either I am able to acquire what I need myself or I know I can’t at all (raid-gate or the like).

Here there are certain extra factors

- you cannot really farm for some products and it is designed that way – the pre-cursor being the most expensive single part (single item) of it, enter the mystic forge
- I don’t envy other people their wealth, it usually does not affect me, here it does, it drives the price for gems up especially before events
- the gold reward ratio for different playstyles seems skewed, other games usually reward you enough to buy a few things and with time you can afford one or two higher priced items. (Here something costs one Gold I think twice about spending it.)

De-facto I feel driven to either succumb to the “run FotM, run FotM” idea, open up excel and consult gw2spidy more frequent or map the best event routes, place my characters at daily farm spots and so on and so on.

Should it take me time, a long time? Absolutely. Please sprinkle that with some substance – I don’t know, some sort of story. Not just “I swung a pick-axe and I swung a pick-axe again” – unless that is the sole dedication we are going for.

Being at the mercy of other players? Unacceptable.

Offer more transparency on the TP, don’t have the highest offer as your default selling option, show the buy options at the same time. Have offers expire. Let me know who I am buying from.

Why? Because I did not put effort into someting that is going to be dumped down only because of some whiny players.

You want it? Work for it like everyone does.

Different play styles? You make karma and gold always at the same time but different ratios. You want to buy Cultural armor for karma? Okey but make it cost 700-900k karma for full set.

You want to buy Cultural armor only because you think it will be easyer to farm that required karma, you want shortcut. You want it easyer so you dont need to put such an effort for something so rare and unique like is cultural armor tier 3.

Thats all what it is.

Sigh

No one wants to take away your precious. The irony is though that you exactly confirmed what I am talking about. You use terms like “effort” and “work”.

This is exactly not what I am talking about. You’ve spent four times more time in this game that I’ve already have – that is ok.

What I am talking about is that I don’t want to be driven into any particular activity if I don’t want to. Now bare with me a second here, I am not talking about earning 500 honour badges or running a particular dungeon nine times. I am solely talking about regular activities the way I like to spend my time in general.

What does that mean – in short:
- don’t tell me I have to make an excel spreadsheet about the most lucrative venues
- don’t tell me to set my dragon timer
- don’t tell me to run FotM now because it will have the best items
- don’t tell me to stand at the TP
(Disclaimer: I am truly happy for anyone who is having fun that way or another, this is not about discrediting anyone.)

I also have an allergy to “daily’s”. The named daily achievement here at least is divided into different aspects and pretty much done in a universal way that does not force me into a particular gameplay. Not so much the monthly achievement anymore – which I’m not complaining about, but I’m not participating either because of my allergy. But I digress.

There is absolutely no problem with making certain aspects more lucrative relative to the difficulty. Making it more then 10 times more lucrative though – well according to some of the reports here – that borders on pushing someone into a particular direction.

You are right that karma does not equal gold – again that is exactly my point as well. This would take a bit too long though, suffice to say that I don’t want to be a part of this “economy” – I think it’s flawed and that has nothing to do with other players.

Let me try it another way to explain this:

PvP specific outfits – keep them (as is).
Dungeon specific outfits – keep them.
PvE I can afford them specific outfits – keep them.
Crafted specific outfits – of course, keep them.

Anyone wants to point a finger at the “omg he can’t afford rich stuff” outfit – go ahead.

Add a bit more flavour and don’t be so tight (not you, the game). Krytan armour, bought it, love it. Some pirate weapons for karma – bought them, love them.

One final thing to think about is, this game is designed to have the precious available for real cash. I could buy them today but that’s not the point. I will buy gladly items that show I bought them – so as to not undervalue anyone’s hard, honest work in this game.

Maybe one really, last, final, point – I love to have a long term goal. A legendary is a great thing to look forward too, I would not want to have it yet – but there need to be intermediate goals as well. (Plus the way towards it should feel … legendary, but that’s another story). I am very much enjoying the “adventure” I am personally having. That is first and foremost why I am playing. Once it becomes a chore and I am opening and thinking too much about excel spreadsheets the magic will be lost.

“Whose Kitten is this?” – “It’s a Charr baby.”
“Whose Charr is this?”- “Ted’s.”
“Who’s Ted?”- “Ted’s dead, baby. Ted’s dead.”

karma =/= gold … they are two difference currencies and I dont want to see Cultural armor for karma.

If they make cultural armor cheaper or buyable by karma I will demand full refund.

I can make topics where I complain and rage too you know

Why would you, according to you you make enough to buy yourself a piece every day?

Different playstyles should be viable, the only one here seems to be to either play the TP or run certain other efficient ways again and again.
Not the “adventure” and “fun” I perceived from the manifesto.

Anyways, I’m not here to argue with you and please go ahead with making any topic you desire

considering you could simply earn gold in-game

goodluck with that

Are you kidding? Prices are inflated, it’s a seller’s market out there.

If you are going to farm, now is the time.

Nah. Resellers are just going to scoop the majority up and sell it for a higher price later. I’m happy for them that they found something they like to do and have nothing against it, but they are not doing anyone a service either.

This game revolves a bit too much around the TP, I for one are becoming increasingly irked by it and will refrain from using it.

I’m all for different options, opening up cultural armour for karma sounds fair, it’s not taking anything away from people who make their money by standing at the TP most of the time.

I swung a sword, then I swung a sword again. Now I’m swinging a colourful sword.

We all play differently and that is ok, we all have different tolerance levels to “pain”, if you so will.

I just looked at everything involved in getting a legendary this saturday and honestly I am not impressed.

It consists of only a few bullet points:

- acquire large amounts of different materials, note that you can’t actively farm all of them
- acquire large amounts of different currencies, karma/skill points/honor badges/dungeon tokens/“world exploration token”

So far so good, it basically says play the game and please play all aspects of it. One could argue why do I have to pvp/explore the world – but heh, different pain levels, right?

The last bullet point is

- throw stuff into the mystic forge and cross your fingers

This is the one part that I can look at and say – ok, I know this is not going to be fun at all.

Is there actually any mention in the game about legendary weapons? Does the game point me at all into getting one? If so I missed all of that.

The pre-cursor should be some sort of story – an adventure. I compare that with the “quest” system. No more kill 10 rats and collect 5 rat tails – hide that part. We all know it’s still there but some of us might not perceive it as such anymore.

The sword does almost the same for all classes (talking main-hand).

There is a “damage” skill – let’s call it your auto attack.
There is a “mobile” skill – teleport/leap (I like the sword for this).
There is a “defensive” skill – block/evade/control the enemy.

That’s how I look at it anyways. Maybe this can help you:

Waypoint Costs are a Problem!

Honestly, I never cared about money in any game. But here it’s different, money is almost everything. Thus yes, I find myself with higher characters thinking twice about using a waypoint, any waypoint.

I have never been in the position of not having any money at all, but I also don’t feel like I’m getting anywhere.

So my feedback … take the level out of the calculation, make it a flat fee across the zones depending on distance. My perception would be under 1s in any zone, then I would hop around some more and potentially even spend more on waypoints then I do atm.

Rouven, does Monk’s focus actually heal you completely or is it just a percentage? Looking over your build has me thinking that I may make a few changes.

Just to avoid confusion – I’m not taking credit for the build, the OP in that thread came up with that.

No, it’s just a percentage – but I’m using the mediations now all the time anyways whereas before I used them more situational. Sorry, I’m not a number crunsher – if I had to guess I would say the heals are within 10-15% which keeps me topped up pretty good.

Good luck and have fun.

Butter on the rise?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Butter
Chocolate
Cinnamon
Walnuts
Cinnamon+Sugar (because it’s likely no recipe would use cinnamon without sugar, so the mix would be used instead)
Mint Leaves (debatable, as it’s likely we’ll have Candy Cane nodes, so I figure you’d make candy canes using those, not mint leaves)

Apparently a lot of people are going to be doing some baking this Wintersday. Maybe we’ll get the speedboost food that candy corn was promising to be, but failed at. All that sugar has to do something to us!

Now I come here as a total non-investor. Cinnamon, Walnuts and Butter are three ingredients that I have more then the regular stack of 250 off, just because they drop like candy.
But I’m not going to put it on the TP for 2c while there is a six digit number sitting there anyways. So I hang on to it or sometimes even vendor it, maybe one day I’ll bake some cookies.
