You can also save yourself some scratch by not buying the cultural armour. Cultural armour is little better than stock gear for that level, the primary reason you’d buy it is for the skin.

But if you’re hard up for cash, buying vanity gear is a no-no.

Things are more complex than just “rez meeee”, indeed this attitude can result in failure.

Positioning
How many people look behind themselves during combat? – Frequently, a ranger or similar newbie needling the enemy from extreme range will cop a hit and go down. But being outside everyone’s field of view they don’t get noticed for quite some time, possibly til it’s too late.

Rally opportunities
In a fight against many foes or if a boss is almost dead anyway, it may be faster to kill the adds then to try healing the downed player – which people will do. However, frequently a downed newbie will focus entirely on healing himself instead of hitting the adds or enemy so when the enemy dies, the newbie is still downed and subsequently dies.

Threat
If the guy has just been downed by a large boss with a powerful melee AoE attack, trying to rally you may get you killed too; I’ve frequently seen 5 or 6 newbies die trying to rez a single downed person because they stood in the enemies forward arc.

Other times, like in WvW – if your zerg is routed and fleeing, and you’re rearguard is being chewed up, staying to help the fallen will likely get you killed too. It’d be less detrimental to the force to leave the fallen to their fate

Being objective
In some battles like Subject Alpha (If you’re not stacking), or the temple of Grentyh, stopping to heal – or worse, completely revive – a downed player is a death sentence for both of you; there are times where respawning will be better for everyone than waitting on a rez

Other times where time is crucial, losing 1 person’s DPS permenantly may be less detrimental, than losing 2 peoples DPS for 10-20 seconds.

All that said, there’s plenty of occasions I’ve seen where a rez would’ve turned the tide of battle. But I’ve also seen it go the other way and people making rezes at inappropriate times has cost the battle

Looking for this Mesmer Build

It sounds like he was running a condition bunker build based around Prismatic Understanding and Restorative Mantras. i use a build like this sometimes in PvP to troll control points or roamers in WvW

Rabid gear and chaos armours lets you tank while doing solid condition damage – then when you need a top up, you pop an invisibility and cycle through your mantras while cloaked so they don’t get interuppted (Yielding ~11k heals, 6k immediatly, 5k when you need it on a 10 second cooldown), then when you it ends PU has stacked up a decent amount of regen/protection/aegis so you get additional defence for a short period after.

Really hard build to take down and will slowly wear away at you (But not a fast killer and easily escaped)

The Condition Mesmer Question: DE or not?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Ryuujin.8236

Ryuujin.8236

Duelling is anything but a useless line for condi builds.

Bleed stacking through sharper images is by far the single most important trait for a condi build, the extra precision from dueling is a boon to that goal, while DE will ensure you can keep up lots of clones at all times. With bleed stacking, clones become a major source of DPS, and the phantasmal fury trait can benefit certain phantasms immensely (ie. duellist)

3 GS clones with a decent crit rate can easily sustain 10-12 stacks of bleeding by themselves, making condition mesmers unique in that your normally harmless clones are a major source of DPS. Now, if you are managing to sustain 3 illusions without DE, then yeah – ditch it. But you’ll want to get sharper images at the very least and that’s right next to DE so… you’re only really investing 5 extra points

Theorycrafting Celestial Gear (Min/Max)

in Mesmer

Posted by: Ryuujin.8236

Ryuujin.8236

Since sharper images +illusions and/or the staff is rather common in mesmer builds, a 9% loss of power but 16% increase in bleeds is potentially comparable if not more damage than full zerker gear.

Context is important here.

In WvW and solo play this may be true. But in Dungeon/Team PvE condition stacking is a serious headache; rangers, mesmers and engineers for example can stack a lot of bleeds by accident – all those “dud bleeds” will block a large portion of your own bleeds thus lowering your effective DPS. On the flipside, your own bleeds will be weaker than a condition specialist like a necro – you filling the condition cap with weaksauce bleeds may actually result in a net decrease in party DPS as you’re blocking the condition user from landing proper, high DPS bleeds.

It’s also interesting to note that celestial stats have been available since launch in PvP, and mesmer’s using celestial is nearly unheard of

However, while phantasm builds may solve your shatter concerns; GW2 is still very much a twitchy game. Dodging and kiting (Or, more frequently skirmishing in and out of melee) is very much central to GW2’s mechanics. You can’t just stand in melee, or stand in one spot with a ranged weapon. You will die, every, single, time.

This is true whatever build or class you play, you will need to kite and dodge; even warriors and guardians must learn to time their dodges and know when to step off

Theorycrafting Celestial Gear (Min/Max)

in Mesmer

Posted by: Ryuujin.8236

Ryuujin.8236

Crit damage isn’t especially useful if your crit rate and base damage is low to begin with.

What Celestial does offer, is superior damage output compared to knights (Assuming you take sharper images and decent precision bonuses from food and runes) without losing too much of your EHP. In otherwords it’s a bridging set between rampagers/zerkers, and knights – slightly less survivability, for marginally more DPS.

The fact it also boosts healing might justify it’s use in WvW/dedicated support role, since you’re boosting the mantra heals and regen not insignificantly without sacrificing your DPS and survival significantly compared to knights… but my personal opinion is those uses are too fringe and too gimmicky.

Gimme a set of zerkers any day.

I run Shelter for PvP
I run Dwayna for PvE only if Im already satisfied with my condi removal and depending on area of game.
I run Signet if I want the extra condi removal or if I for some reason have signet mastery.

I mean to be honest, PVE is so kitten easy I almost never have the need to pop my heal on cooldown.

In PvP, I agree, I’m really satisfied of Shelter. However Signet and/or Shelter for PvE are too limited and in general, for a good player, Dwayna is better.

You also can’t use racial skills in PvP so it’s a non-issue

Your character’s inventory pane has slots down the left hand side into which you can place bags. Larger bags can be obtained a variety of ways – crafted, bought or traded for fractal tokens (20 slot is max at present). You can also buy additional bag slots for gems (400 per slot?) by clicking the locked icon below the bag slots.

Bank space can also be expanded, at the bottom of the bank pane is a little “locked” icon which allows you to buy additional bank slots for gems (600 per slot?)

For someone who has never done the OS JP before, getting through is a difficult enough task. For them to do it with dozens of other players trying to kill them is virtually impossible. By asking PvE players who would have otherwise never set foot in WvW to enter this jumping puzzle to complete PvE content, Anet is essentially leading lambs to slaughter..

And this is why those PvE players should ask people to come with them.

I’d never done the OS JP before (even though I’m a frequent PvP’r, to me the OS JP was a diversion from the real goal of WvW so I never bothered), so I asked about in guild and found a good friend of mine who knew the JP and needed the achievement too. We set off as a pair, and kicked plenty of Dragonbrand kitten on our way to our destination.

The only “problem” here is that people with no knowledge of the JP, and frequently zero PvP experience, are trying to do the JP by themselves and then getting shocked when… dun dun DUN! – They get attacked by someone way more experienced in the art of face-stabbing – find a friend who knows the route, bring more friends if you still don’t feel comfortable… hell bring the whole guild and make an event of it – if you out-number the other players grossly theres no way you can fail.

Remember, this is an MMORPG not a single player game, bring friends!

And yet 55 monks were never nerfed

That’s because Anet in GW1 took a more sensible approach. if a particular combination of skills was proving OP, instead of nerfing those skills (and breaking all associated builds regardless of OPness), they instead introduced counters.

This actually increased build diversity, by introducing paper-rock scissors mechanisms, instead of just reducing build diversity into a narrow straightjacket of “allowed builds”.

In the case the the 55 monks, they introduced new enemies that could strip enchantments in all the popular farming zones of the time (For example those popup critters in UW, jade scarabs in the crystal desert – these were added as a DIRECT response to the 55 monk farmers)

Are Ranges really in THAT BAD a place?

in Ranger

Posted by: Ryuujin.8236

Ryuujin.8236

The key thing to take to heart here is that rangers are not “ranged-ers”. They’re more akin to tolkien’s rangers, like Aragorn – protectors of the land, at home in the wilds. They fight with dexterity and skill, and their pet is a second pair of hands – a tank, a source of DPS, whatever you need.

Every class in GW2 has both melee and ranged weapons options., and universally melee always does more damage than ranged (due to the risk Vs reward) – there is no “designated ranged class” – some classes do better at ranged than others (guardian is especially poor at ranged), but it’s universally preferable to fight in melee if it’s safe to do so

So unfortunately, if you dream of being a master marksman, GW2 isn’t going to be able to deliver… well, not if you want to do high level dungeon content, master your class or be taken seriously by the hardcore players.

Are Ranges really in THAT BAD a place?

in Ranger

Ryuujin.8236

Another black mark against ranger is they have very limited team utility skills compared to other classes.

Engy’s can stack debilitating conditions that benefit the team like vulnerability, weakness, poison. Elementalists can provide near permanent fury and might to the team while they DPS. Mesmers and guardians can render a party nigh immune to projectiles, while healing them as they fight.

Rangers… don’t really have much to offer to a team besides their sword… or bow, or whatever. In fact they’re probably the single least supportive class in the game along with thieves.

Nonetheless, I find ranger a blast to play and do take them along on dungeons with guildies to great effect; however, it’s unlikely i could find a high level PUG that’d take a gamble on me, I only get to as my guild knows me and they know I’m not a longbow afk’r and will punch my full weight; perhaps ranger’s greatest problem isn’t the class, so much as the reputation it’s players have earned it – the home of WoW hunter washouts, casuals who want a pretty pet but care nothing for game mechanics, and people who think “ranger” means “ranged” and never use their melee weapons

Engy and ele can both pull extreme DPS and even throw in useful boons and conditions specced properly. Hell, a good ranger can deal decent DPS will bringing damage boosting spirits to the game.

But here’s the catch

90% of people who play those classes won’t leverage it. How rarely do eles run lightning hammer for it’s crazy DPS? – How many times do you dismay at an engy spamming flamethrower, or ranger sitting on longbow? – I can almost count on one hand the number of rangers I’ve seen using their one handed sword or spirits properly.

Guardians, mesmers and warriors have well established cookie cutters that are good for a party (ie. mesmer traitted focus and feedback, guardian hammer for protection and party boons), when you pick up an ele, engy, thief or ranger it’s a gamble to whether they’re bringing anything useful to the table short of having them ping gear and tell you their build (And then you look like a huge elitist when they blurt out “flamethrower spec” or “longbow spec” and boot their kitten

The classic mainstays everyone loves mesmer for – Signet of Inspiration, Time Warp, Portal, Mass Invis etc all cost the mesmer a utility slot/elite slot, yet are of virtually no benefit to themselves (“Portal bot go!”). While those delicious ethereal fields, null field and feedback; have selfish counterparts on shorter cooldowns. So, next time a mesmer is healing you, or sacrifices all their clones to distort though an AoE to rez you, or timewarps you, or gives you their boons or mends your conditions…. just remember they’re giving up some of their best utility slots and traits for your benefit

GW2-killers

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ryuujin.8236

I think that GW2 is moving forward, just not in the direction we thought. Even though I don’t really like it, Living story is moving forward. Even though I don’t think its a good idea, 2 week updates is moving forward.

I dunno if you can really call it movement.

Take for example Star Trek Online

Every so often you get a new story arc added, fleshing out the growing core story of the universe – frequently new worlds, maps, ships, features and even entirely new game modes and environments. As well as the standard patches and balance tweaks, new cash shop goodies etc

Nearly all of these these additions are permanent and expand the game as a whole (recently they added an entirely new playable faction to the game). The living story adds similar if not more content than these updates… but they only exist for a couple of weeks. Once the content is gone, it’s gone and subsequently GW2 doesn’t feel like it’s really grown – and we’ve had no new features or game modes of note since they introduced Fractals almost half a year ago.

It also doesn’t help that the updates could more or less write themselves by this stage

I’d love to see even one F2P game with a “better” cash shop, that “many F2P games” needs a bit of explaining because in my experience no F2P game has a “better” cash shop than GW2.

I’d point you to STO again then.

For the price of a designer hoodie in GW2, you could buy an entire wardrobe of new outfits in STO. And you wouldn’t get a single item for a single character, but the items would be re-usable, re-obtainable, available across your entire account, forever. They have RNG chests, but in addition to the RNG items you also get tokens so if you get a bad streak of luck from the RNG chests and don’t get what you wanted, you can take the tokens and buy something equally unique and awesome with them as a consolation prize.

It also has a similar gold-to-gems market as GW2 for trading in-game currency for cash shop currency (but the system is much more transparent, you can see the buyers and sellers offers instead of GW2’s blind “this is the price” model. Also the conversion rates arn’t taxed)

WoW succeeded because it continued to add features and fix bugs. GW2 seems more interested in farming players pockets.

Care to explain what changed? The same innovation is there, the game is still solid so what changed?

It’s what didn’t change.

The rest of the MMO market is moving forward, absorbing many of GW2’s innovations into the standard MMO framework while GW2 has stayed more or less in stasis – many of the features people come to expect of a modern MMO (Such as LFG tools, varied PvP modes, PvE custom dungeon creation etc) are simply absent in GW2.

While the level of RNG and viciousness of the cash shop exceed that of many F2P games, despite the fact GW2 is a B2P game. Overall, it means that GW2 languishes in amongst a horde of similar games instead of standing out form the crowd.

TP buying and selling

There’s many factors behind when to sell.

Undercutting shifts the item faster, but with a little research you can find an “optimum” price that may take longer to shift but gets a slightly better price. If your item_ never_ shifts then it’s due to supply outstripping demand in which case you’re taking a gamble even trying to sell.

Your personal needs and trading strategy dictates whether you shoot for a fast sale, or a strong sale (Typically if you’re on a small budget you want to turn over a profit fast so you can reinvest it. If you’re already relatively wealthy, you can probably afford to let the stock sit and fetch a better price.)

All is fair in the world of trading, the problem isn’t with the system, but your strategy – but like all things, you’ll get better at that over time.

[Junk] How Phantasms are made

in Mesmer

Story/gameplay segregation.

In GW1, phantasm spells exclusively dealt degeneration (Think bleeding), and were implied to be psychosomatic, even going so far that one similar skill actually restored a portion of the characters health when the effect ends (Implying they got over the shock of it. The idea of the skill being to use it in such a way as to kill them or end the effect before the heal kicked in).

Another skill, illusory weapon – dealt chaos damage, but the description and weapon behaviour clearly implied that it was psychosomatic. It was like a weapon from a nightmare – you could not block it, evade it, counter it, blind it – the mesmer would swing his weapon and you’d take damage… the sting was, the weapon never actually connects, and thus don’t proc on-hit effects

However, imagine how gimpy phantasms would be if they only dealt degeneration in GW2?

If people put as much effort into grinding achievement points as they did complaining, they’d probably have 500 by now

WvW Phantasm Build with full Celestial

I get what you’re going for here, but by that logic – Valkyrie’s is less than all the other sets?

Valkyrie’s is less.

Valkyrie’s and Cavalier’s have crit damage bonuses, but no perception to actually land any crits. You would never use a full valkyrie or full cavalier set on a mesmer because the crit damage bonus is almost worthless with the base crit chance; you can however use them to introduce additional vit/tough on a zerker build without hurting your crit damage bonus.

The reason you might see other classes use a full set are the likes of thieves and warriors, who have combos and signets that allow them to guarantee critical hits, or drastically buff their crit chance without needing to dump points into perception.

Yeah on paper it seems like a better defensive option. But the usefulness of healing can’t be compared 1 to 1 with toughness or vitality (Different builds and strategies yield different results. ie regen and mantra of restoration is more strongly affected than ether feast)

So that’s a different analysis for a different time.

Edit That said – even if we discount healing entirely, that still leaves 90 defensive, vs knight’s 101 (i also just realised, knights is toughness primary isn’t it, not power,* so my earlier numbers are off, and in fact celestial is quite a lot better than knights. offensively _and_defensively* (As well as infinitely better than Explorer’s)

Some classes rely on target dropping.

Mesmer’s have a defensive skill called “decoy”, which causes the real mesmer to become cloaked, and leaves a clone at their original location.

Obviously if you didn’t drop the original target, then the decoy is absolutely meaningless.

Ryuujin – I would agree with you, except look at the stats on celestial – it gives MORE total points than other sets (excluding magic find). So you get more survivability (tough/vit/healing).

A “typical” coat gives:
1 × 101 primary attribute
2 × 72 secondary attributes

For a net total of 245 stat points. In the case of knights, then you’ll have 173 in offence, 72 in defence. In case of rampagers, all 245 are put towards offence.

Zerker gear gives:
1 × 101 power
1 × 72 precision
_1 x 5% crit damage _

Giving 173 stats points, and 5% crit damage bonus (All of which are offence, and we know from my condition damage tests gives approximate parity – so we could call this ‘equivalent’ to 72 offensive points when the crit rate is around 50-60%)

Celestial gives:
6 × 45 attributes
1 × 6% crit damage
1 × 3% MF

If 5% crit at 50-60% crit chances hold parity with 72 stats in condition, then 6% crit at 33% is equivalent to ~40-45 stats in offence. Adding in power/condi/precision we could then say celestial has “equivalent” to ~175 points in offence.

This is of course a fairly big fudge, but it suggests that the offensive capabilities of celestial is similar to knights or rabid gear (172 offence); and is certainly without a doubt, inferior to rampagers or berzerkers. (245 in offence).

what's happened to Queensdale?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

It’s anet’s own fault for making Queensdale the easymode zone :p

Go to any of the other starter zones (especially Ashford) and you find the enemies way tougher, events more remote, demanding and longer. When you’re given a daily to kill a mix of champs, veterans, quests or krytan stuff – queensdale is the fastest place to cross off your list by a huge margin.

(Personally I just do a few rounds of sPvP for my daily, but, many if not most are allergic to getting stabbed in the face :p)
