WvW Phantasm Build with full Celestial

- Low power compared to regular phantasm builds, this may result in lower damage output but I don’t know the exact result since the condi damage is good and this will reflect on bleeds.

From my experiments, there is a good deal of parity between condition and power sets provided you are stacking for bleeds; ie. rabid via condition deals similar damage to knights (2 offensive, 1 defensive). Zerkers deals damage comparable to Rampagers (3 offensive*)

Celestial splits it’s stats equally between offence/defence and utility (Magic find is no use at all offensively or defensively), based on the values pulled from rampagers then, it’s a given that celestial will deal significantly inferior DPS to rampagers (Specialised Power/Condi hybrid gear), and pack less survivability, than mixed rampagers/rabid, because you’re trading off some portion of your stats for Magic Find.

Simple fact is, PvE celestial exists for only two things:

  • Giving you a “better” source of magic find than traditional magic find gear
  • Confusing newbies by providing a long grind for demonstrably inferior items.

*The reason you don’t see everyone using rampagers, only zerkers is because conditions are limited by the stack cap

Levitas, thanks for totally understood my point.
You simply just can’t compare these two weapons in any way. It’s like comparing apple to orange.

By that logic no weapon can legitimately be compared to any other weapon.

Yet at the end of the day, a mesmer running Sword/Focus/Greatsword, will do infinitely more damage (The main currency of importance in PvE) than Sceptre/Torch/Staff – so clearly there must be something here we can compare. And yes, it turns out there is, it’s DPS

I am guessing that by noob-stick you are meaning the Staff, well as you said the Staff shouldnt be considered, its very low damage and more of a defensive weapon. Try it against a GREATWORD user.

In PvP “the noob-stick” is the derogatory term for mesmer greatsword

Funnily enough not more than a few hours before my posting that message that very thing happened; caught a mesmer with a noob-stick heading towards the guild lord in sPvP.

I’m not sure ritualist as we know them could make a return. They’ve rather chopped up and sold off the components that made rits what they were to other classes.

The idea of static turrets and support dispensers got handed to the engineers.

Weapon spells got an overhaul and given to the elementalists

Generating then sacrificing minions to proc secondary effects represents the mesmer’s core class mechanic now.

Which kind’ve just leaves the channeling stuff where your attack skills interplay with your minions (ie. the attack behaviour changes depending on proximity to a spirit). Of course they could bring them back by giving them a completely new core mechanic, but would people be happy about that?

If you’re looking purely at numbers, yes, the sword has higher DPS. If you’re putting both weapons into real combat situations, however, it’s going to put out inferior damage to the greatsword due to the fact that it requires you be in melee range.

How’s that logic work?

In PvE warrior’s put out the highest DPS in the entire game and melee combat is their modus operandi, and sword has a blink/root built into it that allows us to catch and close instantly into melee range from a distance. Swords are frequently fielded in PvP as well (Including the major tPvP metas), to brutal effect

Furthermore, dungeons parties frequently use stacking strategies where the entire team is forced into melee range; in which circumstances greatswords are at an even greater disadvantage.

whats the sword auto attack combo? i know the first strike gives Vul, but does it have any more part of a chain like the Scepter does?

Yes, the first two strikes apply 1 stack of vuln each. The 3rd strike strips a boon from the target, if the target has no boons, it instead strikes for 50% more damage

You taking into account the conditions and boons from Mirror Blade?

No because the mechanics get a bit muddy at that level. How many times the weapon bounces, whether it bounces to allies or onto enemies, whether the same target gets hit multiple times – sword clones stack vulnerability too. So it’s swings and roundabouts, the difference we’re looking at is 1-3% at most and this is more likely to go in swords favour since sword clones can stack vuln quite quickly across multiple targets and do so without a cooldown.

I should also stress that my assertion has never been that sword renders greatsword irrelevant, rather that sword is optimum and very few builds should eschew it.

The last i checked iWarden wasnt on the sword….you statement

“Saying the sword is our most powerful and versatile weapon is not a “blanket statement” it’s a simple fact; the sword is our best DPS weapon and argueably best defensive weapon. Period.”

Why exactly are you mentioning skills that are not part of the sword for?

Now you’re just trolling…

Firstly – If I had omitted the fact that Greatsword has a phantasm and only compared their attack skills you’d have quite rightly said “Oh but most of the greatsword’s DPS comes from it’s phantasm”

Secondly – You don’t however use a sword in isolation, you mix and match and offhand in order to obtain a phantasm to go with your sword (Which is part of it’s versatility, you are not locked in to use just one phantasm), so if you’re going to factor in the Zerker, you need to consider the DPS added from offhand phantasms

Finally – If you look at the numbers, sword out-DPS’s greatsword no matter what angle you look at it, nitpicking this doesn’t change the conclusion one bit.

This is what we call in science “Oh snap”

Fancy sharing the proof on this?
To me Greatsword best offensive and staff best defensive and i would like to see your “proof” that the sword is better

Staff I can discount entirely in the DPS stakes. it’s strictly single target, the projectiles do low damage, as does Chaos Storm, iMage is good but again it’s single target and comparable to Duellist if you really must use a single target ranged phantasm so I won’t waste space here analysis staff DPS. As for the other two

Firstly – the quantitative, looking at the weapon’s primary attacks using the basic values.

Sword
#1 Sword Chain
Damage: (202 + 202 + 336/504) = 740 to 908 over ~2 seconds
DPS: |412| DPS

#2 Blurred Frenzy
Damage: 808 over 2 seconds
DPS: 404 DPS
DPS/CD: ~67 DPS

Greatsword
#1 Spatial Surge
Damage: 348 over 1.5 seconds (at 900 range)
DPS: 232 DPS

#2 Mirror Blade
Damage: 259 per bounce.
DPS: 345 DPS
DPS/CD: ~32 DPS

Now, as for phantasms, iZerker is a great phantasm for DPS, it’s powerful, it’s AoE – hence I personally use greatsword as my ranged swap weapon. However, Warden does considerably more damage when you’re in your sword swap – DPS counting is largely irrelevant on phantasms since they do not occupy the mesmer, once cast the phantasm does it’s own thing so total damage dealt and it’s cooldown is the only factor.

Warden
Damage: 3,816
DPS/CD: ~152 DPS

Zerker
Damage: 784
DPS/CD: ~39 DPS

…yeahhh. (I suspect the tooltip for zerker is broken, it does far more damage than this in practice. Dealing ~1/2 to 2/3 the damage of warden)

However you would be right in pointing out zerker is more likely to land it’s full chain of hits than warden. But I’m not contesting that warden and zerker both have their time and place. As I’ve said i use GS/Sword/Focus – because there are occasions where a sword doesn’t cut it (pun intended).

So, onto the qualitative.

GS1 only hits a single target at a time unless they kindly stand in a neat line, you might say “hey! – GS2 can bounce and hit multiple targets, why have you omitted that in your calculation” the answer is simply “Because sword can hit multiple targets too on every single attack” – not only is sword doing more straight DPS, it’s able to hit multiple targets as an inherent feature.

Additionally, Sword #2 can evade every attack thrown at you for 2 seconds every 9-12, seconds on demand so it boasts some serious defence in there whereas GS5 has a long cooldown and can scatter enemies making it inadvisable in teamplay. Both GS and Sword can strip boons (skill 1 and 3 respectively). Stakitten also has a long cooldown and only reliably blocks 1 hit through aegis, and since the nerf to chaos armour… it’s really just… bad. (before you say "but staff is better for party defence! – I should add i never claimed sword was better if you need to protect you party, staff is the way to go.)

As for phantasms, Zerker is good but it’s not the best – it’s still a GREAT choice, but it still doesn’t invalidate the analysis of sword because sword has even better phantasms to choose from.

In conclusion:

Sword exceeds the DPS of GS and Staff in every situation, boasts robust self defence options and provides a great deal of versatility.

This is kind of a blanket statement. It largely depends on your builds/playstyle.

Saying the sword is our most powerful and versatile weapon is not a “blanket statement” it’s a simple fact; the sword is our best DPS weapon and argueably best defensive weapon. Period.

The numbers do not lie.

I guess if you have a thing for running sub-optimal builds you might not have a sword/offhand somewhere in your build in PvE/WvW – but that’s their prerogative, in the same way that at the end of the day the legend they enjoy looking at is theirs to decide. I’m just giving my analysis based on the functionality and usefulness of the weapon so they get both good use, and get to show off it off plenty in the field.

Greatsword and staff arn’t used in all builds, while sword is ubiquitous in all game mode and builds. It’s our highest DPS weapon, it’s also our best defence, it allow the use of offhand weapons and it can strike multiple targets.

In terms of getting air time, sword/offhand is the most common set when running around (so you can access your focus for swiftness), and in most situations it’s favourable to sit in sword for the DPS when you don’t need to swap for your off-set skills.

Situations where you won’t be using a sword are few and far between (Like, the lupicus battle using standard strategy)

HoM 500 Achievement Points summed up

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ryuujin.8236

Can i just help put something in perspective for people.

It’s not 500 achievement points – for a tiny minority, it’s 500 AP, yes. But the vast majority of GW1 players barely get half that total – i personally played GW1 on and off for 5 years, spent over 3000 hours in it, and I “only” got 300 AP – most my friends who played for years didn’t do even as much as I did, and they only got 100-200 for their years of gaming.

The number of people getting a full 500 AP are tiny, even amongst GW1 players, these are people who completed virtually every single achievement in the game, PvE and PvP alike and played single virtually the start of the game to the end. The sour-puss crowd are acting as if everyone who so much as created a GW1 character is instantly getting 500 AP which is simply not true.

I personally had 300 AP from GW1, out of a total of 5,900 AP – take away 300 and it makes absolutely no difference whatsoever, I still have exactly 11 chests – just like you if you’ve done the same amount of GW2 achievements as me. in a years time, 300AP headstart means even less.

The cost is 2 utilities and a major adept trait. You take condition removal mantra, mantra heal, and pDisenchanter, along with mender’s purity. You are now very heavily specced towards condition removal. However, against strong condition classes, you don’t need those slots for anything more important than strong condition removal.

and with all that cost, can you beat said Conditionmancer?

Yes.

At least, I’ve done it in sPvP.

Now, whether an equally skilled mesmer, fighting an equally skilled condinecro could is another question. I think they probably could, restomantras combined with stealths are the ultimate clutch/heal combo.

Pop a cloak, rotate mantras – bam, health is back up and you have 2 condition removals to play with.

Trying to max damage with support tips Pve

in Mesmer

Posted by: Ryuujin.8236

Ryuujin.8236

The +3% damage per clone trait only applies to your own personal attacks (Not phantasms), and if you’re using a staff for a large portion of your rotation that will be quite low.

Since any kind’ve support mesmer will be investing quite deeply into inspiration, it makes sense to take at least 25 for the +15% phantasm damage (Which is quite a large portion of your total DPS), with the option of taking 10 in domination for another 15% (and 100 power) if desired.

I’m a little unsure why you’ve built for runes of hoelbrak since might is a rather rare proc on your staff clones/winds of chaos (Oh I see, you’re using sigils, interesting idea) – but overall you’ve nailed that there’s no reason not to run full zerker. With full zerker exotics and +30% phanty damage on a good day you’ll see your warden hitting 10k AoE (Of course taking 30% will mean eschewing the staff cooldowns, but iWarlock has the potential to really hit like a truck during long boss fights)

I personally prefer to not spec into either GS or Staff, which leaves it open for me to switch between them depending on whether my team will need the extra protection this fight, or if we just need ranged DPS – sword/focus is your bread and butter source of DPS (Exceeding even greatsword), and should be your primary choice when helping DPS, switching to staff only to pop it’s boons or when sitting in melee is not an option.

The first 40 levels on mesmer are worst. By around 40 you have enough traits to get the big gamer-changer traits. Few other classes have such a long “larval” stage where they can do little more than wriggle vigorously at their foes.

This has only been made worse by the recent patch that shunted Illusionist’s Celerity from Adept to Grandmaster, effectively increasing mesmer’s cooldowns almost universally by 20%, further slowing down the gameplay

Condition builds in party PvE are usually a bad idea.

Condition stacking remains a roadblock to their proper utilisation – between 5 players it’s easy to stack bleeds to cap after which further damage is shrugged off. Much of that cap is frequently taken up by incidental bleeds from power mesmers, engys, warriors, rangers etc. leaving very little room for your boosted bleed damage (The real bread and butter of most condition classes) to actually stick and deal damage.

I’d love to recommend a condition build – they have a great synergy with support builds since they leave your hands free for healing and buffing; but they punch far far FAR below their weight as long as condition cap is a thing.

We had a discussion on this topic here not long ago:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/Berzerkers-vs-Rampagers-on-Phantasm-builds/

The conclusion was that almost all phantasm builds would benefit from using rampagers in solo play. BUT, and it’s a very big but – in teamplay, the condition cap, and the fact you’d be consuming that cap with sub-par condition damage would result in a net decrease in party DPS if you had any condition specialists with you like necros.

Given how easy solo play is, it’s generally inadvisable to waste the gold obtaining a rampager’s set in the first place and stick to full zerkers for PvE

Begging for Mesmer Portals in JP's

I’m actually starting to get a little peevy at the entitledness of the player base towards mesmers.

Every patch, people cry mesmers are OP. Every patch, mesmers get nerfed and we’re told “Hey you guys have time warp and portal to buff us, you should be grateful to sacrifice your utilities for our benefit”. Then along comes a jump puzzle and suddenly it’s all “OMG i need a mesmer stat!

Now hold on guys… if you want us to carry on carrying you through content you have got to stop treating us like your personal utility-bot and getting us nerfed, otherwise we’re just gonna reroll another class.

wtf racial skills doing in this game?

Mesmers use them a fair bit, our class elites kind’ve suck for solo play – sure people whine about Moa morph, and everyone loves Time Warp or mass invisibility; but ask yourself “How useful are these skills to the actual mesmer sacrificing their elite slot to field one” and you’ll find the answer is “Not much”.

I’d much rather stick Elixir U or Quickening Zepher in my elite slot than timewarp; we pay for these skills party-buff capabilities, by having cooldowns 3 or 4 times longer than their single-target-utility counterparts (In many ways it’s the mesmer’s lot in life to act as a utility-bot for other people – other people who will invariably scream ‘nerf mesmer’ and get you trashed even more come next patch)

As an Asura my D-series golem also has a few situational uses, providing an additional set of barriers for projectile heavy fights like the lava shaman or SE triple golem pull.

GUILD WARS 1

GUILD WARS 2

I am quite aware that they are 2 completely different and isolated games, thank you very much.

Isolated?

It’s the same world, the same characters the same races. Today we play in a living story environment, where you are watching the game’s history unfold.

Guild Wars 1 is nothing less than the living story of Tyria 250 years ago. If people who didn’t get to play tyria’s past shouldn’t be allowed to keep the AP they earned back there, then it seems unfair to let you keep your AP from previous living story events, because anyone who comes after you will never get to earn them

  • Make warden ground targeted, or able to re-position itself between attack cycles.

How many times have you set warden it does one attack successfully… but now it’s worthless but you don’t want to shatter as it’ll kill the other two good phantasms you have running? – If the warden could reposition itself between attacks it’d still be easily avoided, but would be good for more than one attack

  • Buff DPS across the board in PvE (This is a wish should be applied to every class except warrior, not exclusively to mesmers)

The disparity between Warrior DPS and every other class as it presently stands is ridiculous. Mesmer’s cannot spec for DPS because even full specced DPS they are barely a shadow of Warrior DPS – as long as warriors are so much more powerful, classes like ranger stand little hope of finding parties. When a class specs pure DPS, IMO it should have parity with other classes running pure DPS, and the reason classes spec anything BUT DPS would be in order to provide support, not because they literally can’t run any other useful build

PVE dungeon build for 80?

I see on the build that signet of inspiration is used. Not really sure why. It isn’t a mantra so doesn’t contribute to healing.

In a good team (ie. a guardian and/or warrior with banners) you’ll hopefully be getting quite a few boons onto yourself, particularly might and protection. Signet of inspiration can then be popped to reflect the boons back onto the rest of your team.

Take for instance you’re in a team with a warrior and guardian, AoE boons from the rest of the team has provided everyone (including you) with:

  • 8 seconds protection
  • 12 seconds of regen
  • 12 stacks of might.

You then pop signet of inspiration, and now everyone else in the team has:

  • 16 seconds protection
  • 24 seconds of regen
  • 24 stacks of might

This’d also be a great time to pop time warp, so everyone attacks 50% faster while their tanked up on might. Of course if you’re in a team with a lack of boons then it’d be wise to switch it out, as I say in my original overview signet of inspiration represents an optional skill (Which is where the beauty of taking 10 in chaos comes in, because chaos has many traits that benefit your alternatives like 20% faster manipulation cooldowns)

Prior to the nerf chaos armour could provide quite a dearth of boons to share too but this is no longer the case with it’s 1 second ICD

High latency due to backbone network

in Players Helping Players

Me and a german guildmate have been experiencing very bad latency playing on Tarnished Coast (NA) for the last few weeks.

After tracing it it seems there is a hop at Paris (preceeding the big hop to Washington) that is adding a full 150ms to our ping rate by itself. The connection is part of the backbone network as far as I can tell, and not something my ISp is responsible for.

In situations like this what can you do about it? – I can’t play GW2 properly under these circumstances, but phoning my ISP won’t change anything either

I don’t think you guys appreciate how hard it is to earn achievements in GW1.

Take example legendary vanquisher – comprises 3 components (vanquisher of tyria/cantha/elona). To get one of those titles you must “vanquish” every zone in that map (In hard mode. Which would have some of the GW2 casuals screaming in horror as enemies use elite skills, advanced strategies and teamwork to kick your kitten

In GW1 mobs didn’t respawn in a given zone until you left it, most maps had around 200-400 enemies. In order to vanquish it you had to kill every single enemy in the zone, an exercise that’d typically take an hour or more. if you logged out, or died too many times you’d have to start over.

If you could kill every single enemy in every single zone in every single map – you’d get the legendary vanquisher title which amounts to 4 achievements; not even enough to get to the first milestone (5 achievements) in GW2 worth a “mere” 50 points

When you see a guy with 350… 400 GW1 HoM earned achievement points, he no doubt spent thousands of hours over many years earing that

Skill points are easily obtained from fractals. 1 skill point = 35 fractal relics.

level 30+ runs net easily over 100 relics a run, not withstanding the XP (and thus levels) gained by running the fractals
