The chain where You defeat Ulgoth in Harathi Hinterlands gives 2 or three group events (I forget). If you do that once a day you can satisfy the group event and get a daily chest. There’s a ton of people there for the chest so its Doable.
You are right on the population thing. Its been brought up repeatedly. Perhaps anet is working on it. Perhaps not. Hard to tell with them. They usually remain silent until they change something. (like adding the jugs of liquid karma)
I think your logic is out of whack. In the beginning, Orr was the most rewarding place in the game and people were there. Anet is now making other places more rewarding, by making it so the reward is more spread out.
[/quote]
Not to interject myself into your argument but I feel that their effort to uncluster people on the map has not worked as planned . It seems they just moved the clusters around a bit. The maps are 98% empty with clusters at certain events.
Ex- you mentioned Hairathi Hinterlands. I’m there a lot too. You know why? There’s people there for the chest. After I’ve done the event chain a 100+ times, I’d like to do something else. There’s a ton of empty events.
If their aim was to get people out of Orr then they were sucessful. The events are virtually undoable now. The problem still exists, they’ve just shifted it a little. I love the chests and loot, but I think it may be part of the problem now.
So now that I have eight level eighty characters (one of each class), what is there to do?
I’ve been playing since beta — done map completion, dungeons, master crafter, events, been a guild leader, done guild events, special events, other pve, spvp, tpvp, and a million hours of wvw (yes, a slight exaggeration), etc…
WvW was obviously my favorite, but now that they’ve added wxp and made it so that it’s per character, that pretty much kills the idea of having multiple toons, since working on your ranks would have to be done per character — unlike spvp, where you can get titles and the benefits of using all of your toons, you have to work on each toon separately. Horrid idea.
Anyway, I’m looking for recommendations and ideas on new things to do in GW2 to keep it fresh and keep me playing.
Can anyone throw any good ideas at me?
Thanks!
I think your done…… LOL
I can’t even bein to imagine how long it took you to do all that.
I have 4 level 80s now and I don’t know if I can do it anymore. The process of leveling characters just stopped being fun after my first 80. I slogged on and got 3 more characters to 80 but it gets worse every character. I even tried crafting. Sorting through what mats I need and going back and forth between the trader and the stations is just as bad as doing hearts or doing the personal story. Dungeons are too difficult on pre-80s, both to find groups for and to be effective in.
How about an experience boost for each level 80 character?
How about a daily per character experience reward for jumping puzzles?
How about buying commander tag = instant level 80?
Any other ideas?
Amazing to me that it took you this long to burn out. After leveling through the betas and my primary, I was burned out. I got 3 toons to 80 with exotic armor. the first 2 were painful with no karma jugs and Diminishing rewards.
Commander tag = pure genius. Forget Gems, If they offered it i would have paid cassh for it. I think they should put a restriction on it that you have to have at least leveled one toon to 80 on your account before using it. Fantastic suggestion.
Thanks for the link. Anet does address event scaling. They also concede that you need about 10 people for group events. Many events are not soloable. (Assuming that I wanted to, I really don’t)
However, none of this addresses being alone on a map. Ok, so no group events in that scenario. Plus regular events are a crapshoot.. Do you see how this doesn’t work for me?
People are just not compelled to go to certain areas because of various of reasons.
One of the reasons is that the events repeat quite often and whatever you do hasn’t that much of an impact on the world and people feel and recognize that. It doesn’t feel as if it is your world, as if it is your story. They may affect things around them but it’s in a dismissible way. The boss you just killed respawns 10 minutes later, it just doesn’t care you’re there.
Yup, but that is why I like to keep going and roaming the zones to the next event. The problem = the maps are empty. The next event/chain will be near impossible alone. In Orr, all you can do is try to open the map slowly a lot of the time.
Not fun
Want more people while you run around? Guest on TC or JQ
Bored with a Zone? Do a different one.
Want to do dungeons? Use gw2lfg.com
Want to WvW? Join a T3-T6 Server
Want to have fun? DO WHAT YOU ENJOY.
I’m on Tarnished Coast and I don’t see enough people. If a zone has a lot of people in it, it means a world boss spawned, and I’ve been dumped into overflow because I refuse to camp them.
I frequently guest TC, but like you said, the problem exists there too. I waited a week or two to buy my exotic armor because none of the waypoints were open (balth, grenth, etc) I was finally able to get it on TC.
Well, I will say this.
So for your leveling sake, and for the sake of seeing another neat milestone in technology come to life, I hope they are thinking about or working on the underflow concept, as it’s been discussed plenty of times before.
Thanks for your thoughtful reply. Yes, underflow has been mentioned before. I’ve even mentioned it myself. perhaps servers could auto-merge when they get beneath a certain population?
Also, I like the idea of world bosses but its not functioning. What you wind up with is people popping around from one to the next with al their characters and the maps being empty. (I get it, I love loot too.)
I almost want to say they should remove the chests entirely. While part of me hates the idea. I’d rather see the loot spread out to ordinary enemies. Leave the chests for dungeons.
People will always find a way to maximize loot though.
Thank you SHM for the straight answer, I did see something about free transfers to the medium populated servers maybe their more active per say?
I don’t have the answer to that. I am on a full server and experiencing what you are. You can try guesting. Tarnished coast and Sea of sorrows seem to be more populated servers. However, I see the exact same problem there too.
Ironicly, I sometimes found myself going back to the low level areas because the events were more managable with less players when you are decently equipped.
I really don’t know what else to say. Do your personal story and level any way you can for now. Just realize this problem does not go away.
Good luck
GO AWAY. The new event is simply amazing. If you want the perfect game with no problems your going to be looking for the rest of your life. Every thing will just be a disappointment if you cant deal with things not being perfect.
That’s a bit extreme. Especially since I like the content/events and overall mechanics.. They need to do something about this population problem and/or make events and areas scale better.
Ok it may of been a bit much to say “go away” but your asking for the game to be less popular so you can have a better playing for your self. If things are harder more ppl will run them beyond having mechanics that just kick ppl out of the zones your not going to see a drop in pop for big events unless they make the events worst.
Actually, All I want to see is more people on the maps. The game synergizes better when the maps are full. More events spawn, champion bosses become doable. It’s just overall more fun.
What I meant by events should scale better = If there are 2 people on a map, then the event shgould be doable by 2 people.
I just came back and I’m sad to see no one in starting zones anymore as I re-rolled a new character so I could get back into the game.
I’m currently on Maguuma and I was on Darkhaven before using some gold to Transfer to what I thought was a more populated server.
Anyone know which servers are actually populated? Kinda sucks not being able to do group events and such since no one is in these areas anymore, :’(.
P.S I came back like a week ago before this event started
Don’t listen to the trolls on here. There is a population problem. The maps are empty and they were before the event started. It’s not just the starter areas either. You will find yourself fully leveled, repeating the same couple of events because no one is on the map.
You’re right. It’s a real problem. I hope the devs are taking is seriously. Its making the game way less fun to play.
GO AWAY. The new event is simply amazing. If you want the perfect game with no problems your going to be looking for the rest of your life. Every thing will just be a disappointment if you cant deal with things not being perfect.

I admit that anet has fixed a lot of problems with the game. The over all experience still is just flat. The bottom line is (for me anyway) I don’t find this game fun when I am alone on the map. Besides a hand full of events the maps are empty.
Its really disapointing. There’s this great big map with a ton of events and I find myself limited to the same few events or mindlessly farming. I don’t see the point in playing anywmore.
I personally was more interested in the viability of a p/p in pve only, not sure what the OP wanted to know.
It seems the whole theif catagory everyone is mainly interested in PVP. I don’t PVP I do use p/p in PVE. Here are my observations as someone who likes p/p pve..
Stealth is pretty much non existant with the build. Running and dodging are key. Even when i use mug, the stealth often times misses.
The key to p/p is to have high percision, power and condition damage. (pistols rely on both to do damage) If you max one of the traits let it be trickery. some well placed traps (and high condition damage) will often take half of the monsters health. plus the cripple prolongs your life as they can’t reach you as fast. 2 unloads after a trap = death. Against magic users forget unload and daze/ confuse them every few shots.
Using scorpion wire to pull an enemy (especially into your traps) is a great way to get it dead fast, while not over aggroing.
My complaints with p/p:
A) you are weak against condition damage.
B) You can’t really max the traits. None of my traits are higher than 25. As I mentioned before, you need power, percision and condition damage to be effective. However, in truth, I think all classes struggle with the traits a little.
C) I don’t think you are tanky enough to switch between daggers and p/p lacking the toughness trait so its all or nothing as far as going ranged. I like a shortbow as it gives you even more range for boss fights.
*edited for grammar and some content.
(edited by SHM.7628)
The camera angle isn’t likely to improve on older content and newer content is being written around it (such as the new jumping puzzles). Part of the problem with the camera was that several changes were made to it after jumping puzzles were designed and redesigning them isn’t cost/time effective. That’s why the new jumping puzzles work better for norn and charr, rather than the older ones.
As time goes on, of course, there’ll be more and more newer ones, and the older ones will eventually be in a minority. But I doubt they’ll fix them.
The map situation depends on what server you’re on, but you can’t expect people to be everywhere, because people are only going to group where the rewards are best. Try guesting to different servers if you find the one you’re on to be not so busy.
Waypoints are pretty pricey, but since the money you get as a high level character is also pretty high, they cease to be a problem after a while…at least for most people I talk to. I mean 1 dynamic event at level 80 pays for a waypoint charge to most places. And since you can get closer to places going through the mists to Lion’s Arch, which is free, it’s hardly a problem.
I do agree that they loot scaling still has some issues and needs to be looked at, but it’s a whole lot better than it was.
We pretty much agree. (Aint it nice when that happens ?
)
As for the map situation, The events with the better rewards are more populated like you said. I just don’t want to be limited to a hand ful of zerg events. they get old after a while when you do the same ones without switching it up.
It seems to me that I am either at empty events or Zerg events so full that I can’t fit foes fast enough becuase they dead before my skills activate.
Guesting is nice, but I’m finding that its pretty much the same all over. Thanks for the reply though.
When used in the negative sense, grind used to mean doing something repetitive for a specific reward. In Aion, when it launched, if you wanted to level, you ran out of quests and you had to grind mobs to level, at least until you were high enough to PvP. People would grind the same mobs over and over again, just to level. This is the traditional definition of grinding.
You can grind faction points in games by doing the same dailies every single day, because that’s the only way to get the faction you need. The question of course, is whether you need stuff or not.
As in Aion, you needed to be a certain level to PvP. If you couldn’t get there with quests, grinding was the only answer. That was it.
If you need certain gear to get further in a game, you have to grind dungeons over and over again, waiting for an RNG drop in order to get geared high enough to get to the next raid.
By the standard definition, the only real grind in Guild Wars 2 can be found in FotM. Because if you want to go further, you need to grind that dungeon over and over. That’s been alleviated a bit by the laurals.
Dailies in Guild Wars 2 are less grindy than most people claim because most of them can be done quickly and easily and these days, you can even choose which ones you want. People call it a grind but in reality you’re not doing it long enough to make it a grind, unless you’re just not thinking about it. There are many times I get them without even trying.
People call it a grind because it takes a long time, but it doesn’t take a lot of work on your part. If the dailies take you an hour a day, which is a long time for dailies these days, then to get something it’ll take you 30 hours of play. But it’s not quite repetitive, because you can change it up. Do different things on different days. Calling it a grind is misleading because there’s variety. And you don’t have to do them because you don’t really need ascended gear anyway. None of the content is gated, except higher levels of FoTM. You can do the first ten levels without any ascended gear at all. I know because I did it myself.
Then you’ve basically experienced that content and you can decide if you want to continue. Some people do, some people don’t.
Compare this with a game like Rift, where you’re not even allowed to queue for a dungeon unless you meet certain criteria. The game won’t let you play a dungeon without certain minimum stats. Stats you need gear for, for which you have to grind. Specific stats on specific gear to get into specific dungeons or raids.
That’s my definition of grind.
Good point. The Optional grind was what GW1 stand out from the crowd. If you wanted to work on GWAMM, or skin items, it was there for you you to do. However it was not madatory, nor did it effect your stats or ability in game.
I left the game in november and recently received an email about the game being 30% off. I came back and gave you guys another try. Here’s what I found.
On the plus side It would appear to me that diminishing rewards has been removed Also, the rewards are much closer to scale (XP, Karma, drops) Very good move, These were deal breakers for me.
The level scaling system works now. If the rewards are right, It makes sense for me to play all over the map. As a matter of fact, I just went from level 77 -80 in Metrica. (Starter Asura area.) It was fun too. Kudos.
I also like the new dailys and the jugs of liquid karma.
Here’s a few things that still need work.
The camera. Its dizzying. Especially in indoor locals, jumping puzzles, or tight places. (enough said)
Empty maps. Besides the few hot spots of activity, Overall the maps are often very empty places. This is not good for events.
waypoints are too pricey at higher levels. There’s no getting around it. The maps are huge. It takes too long to treck and costs too much to warp at level 80. Its prohibitive.
Loot could still scale better. I am getting level 70 drops at level 80. While that is much better than it was, they are pretty much unusable.
All that said, Is it a perfect game? No way. However at least now I feel there’s enough for me to justify playing. Keep improving guys.
There’s a cap on condition stacks of 25. In a scenario where you have two thieves attacking a boss and one of them can achieve a stack of 25 by themselves, the other one essentially becomes useless because they’ve got nothing to stack on. Is anything being done to address that to make them less redundant?
So we can derive at least 2 things from this:
*Colin himself doesn’t actually understand his own game and doesn’t realize that 5 condition builds in a party without a condition cap would be outputting equivalent damage as 5 direct damage builds because on an individual level they are equal
*He seems to think it’s perfectly okay to leave it as terrible as it is because fixing it would make hosting more expensive. I.E., it’s okay to leave things completely unbalanced.
To your first point:
I don’t know where you derive that Colin doesn’t understand his own game at all… no where in there does he say anything at all about class performance as far as condition builds versus anything else.To your second point:
There is such a thing as business overhead. And this game has been running with overhead for 5 years before it was even released… and continues to rack up overhead in costs. There is no monthly sub. So box sales and what gems are bought have to both bring the game out of the red from what was spent in 5 years of development, but also must cover salaries, server maintenance and costs… so on and so forth. It is a pretty well known fact that one of the greatest limiting factors as far as cost goes is server bandwitdth… which is the amount of information your servers can transmit and recieve during a given period of time. The vast majority of his response talks about the technical limitations they are facing in this department and admits that the cost of bandwidth is WHY they chose to place a cap.The second part of his response is in answer to the original question… I bolded it for you, but I will copy and paste it here, again…
Is anything being done to address that to make them (conditions) less redundant?
And before you respond telling him to pay for more bandwidth… how much have you spent in the gem store lately? If you want them to be able to overcome limitations derived from the income of the game… support it by spending a small amount of money. 5 or 10 dollars a month isn’t much to you, but it would add up for them and allow them to do more with the resources they have. If it isn’t worth that cost to you… then continue to enjoy the game and hope they continue to release new content, pay their people, maintain their servers, and turn enough of a profit to both keep it online and improve it… I’m certain you have already gotten your moneys worth and then some…
I really think your last paragraph needs to be addressed, so here goes. The devs chased a great many people away from this game and from the gem store. The implementation of new stat gear, diminishing rewarards and the haloween fiasco are examples.
People were dropping big money in the gem store. I too would have supported them with the occasional purchase, but it was not to be. I just think that chasing away your player base and then crying broke is a bit odd.
After 4 months of not playing they sent me an email advertising 30% on the game. The whole thing just seems backwards to me. I mean, I went to the mat for them, I prepurchased, played through the betas and gave my feedback. At this point, crying broke is not going to get a lot of sympathy out of me.
Odd though that you respect my opinion and call me a troll at the same time.
Well there is a difference between respecting your opinion and liking it. I totally respect your opinion and you have the right to it. In certain parts of the world, you completely have the privilege to shout that opinion until your voice gives out.
However, I don’t think you should be surprised that someone calls you out over it. You deleted your characters, uninstalled your game, and if this had ended with “and then I moved on” . . . nobody’d be caring. However, if you consistently keep showing up in a place where you admittedly have no interest in improving anything just to say how bad it is?
Why would you be surprised someone called you a troll? Even if what you are instead is just a protester?
I’ve come to the conclusion that the game is pointless.
Also, every video game is (in essence) pointless. They’re meant to entertain, for the most part, and from a purely objective standpoint . . . mere entertainment is pointless, worthless, and not worthy of time spent. You gain nothing tangible through entertainment, except you will lose precious time.
It’s pointless because its not fun. To me trolling means being abusive. I was not.
Things change because people dissent. Bad press makes a company more likely to change. Why do you think jugs of liquid karma were added?
I am a displeased customer. (there are many) I have a few options here that I excersised. I stopped playing, which empties the servers and prompts chnges. I am giving my feedback here and to anyone who asks my opinion. (word of mouth) I also have the power of the wallet. no cash shop support. plus no more anet purchases until I feel satisfied. In the end the bottom line is all that matters anyway.
Don’t like it? too bad for you. This is the American way.
In the latest patch, steeltide got stealth nerf. I have to say good job….you don’t want us to farm, and you keep nerfing every single money/material source. What’s the point for this? t6 materials for a legendary is just insane if you want to buy it from TP. If you continue to do this, I’ll realy consider buying further expansions…..also fix your game don’t do content patches in every month, no point in it.
They dont want you to farm your legendary in 2 months. It is supposed to by long term goal =1 year for instance.
If you want to buy it from TP its your fault so no reason to complain. Go farm material instead using TP as shortcuts …
Someone already said this. But it looks like whoever is complaining about HIGH TP prices is just mad because he cant use this shortcut to craft his Legendary. You are not supposed to buy everything from TP you know?
Please just dont create another topic like this, we already have plenty of them.
In a no grind game getting the max weapon is a year? Yeah, that makes no sense at all. “There are enough of these posts” because many people are greatly displeased.
@SHM, I respect your opinion though I can’t understand why you have deleted your characters, and uninstalled the game.
You clearly feel strongly enough about this game to troll it’s forums.
I am not a troll. I payed my money for this game. I deserve to have my voice heard. We were duped. Three weeks in they changed the game to something else enirely different than the game I payed for. They also duped us with the manifesto.
I’d be more than happy with a refund. Since they won’t do that. they have to live with the bad press. However, If you like the game then kudos. Odd though that you respect my opinion and call me a troll at the same time.
(edited by SHM.7628)
@SHM My goal is a legendary weapon, but now with this genius stealth nerf I have to grind even harder.
I do understand. I just think its easier to walk away at this point. Who is to say they won’t add another infusion or some other nonsense to legendaries in the future? Three months in and they did it to exotics. What makes you think you’re safe? When asked about these things they are vague in their answers anyway.
Seriously, stop punishing yourself. It’s just not worth it.
Yes I have to say you are right. But things are getting worse since the lost shores patch.
As far as I was concerned, lost shores was the final nail in their coffin. After they made my level 80 exotics obsolete, there was no turning back. I deleted the characters and uninstalled the game.
Since lost shores (or the final insult as I like to call it) I haven’t even been mildly tempted to play again.
If you love grind ( I do not) there’s lots of Korean grinders out there that are way more fun anyway. The joke’s on them, because they’ll get no cash shop purchases from me now.
The whole point of these nerfs, which are intentional without a doubt, is that you spend more rl money on their piece of crap gem store. No subs so they have to sucker you in some how.
Very transparent, but not very smart. People don’t spend money on a game they don’t enjoy.
I’ve come to the conclusion that the game is pointless. Grind is not my thing. (I know some people just adore it) I stopped playing GW2, and was toying around with an old console type game. I immediately remembered why I liked RPGs. There was a sense of achievement & progression if you used some strategy.
I just don’t have the will or desire (or time) to do things endlessly. Like you mentioned farming. I like farming actually. (sometimes) What is the point if you feel you never get anywhere though?
Gear is a moving target in this game anyway. Not only do you quickly outlevel it, but then comes the next flavor of the month gear, and yours in now useless.
I think the devs have to learn that busy does not = fun. Same with the maps and personal stories. Your doing the same shared maps and PS with all your characters and not having any fun. (because of the deja vous)
Perhaps I am the odd man out on this one, but this is how I feel.
The man spent 8 hours answering questions. I honestly don’t know what he could have said to appease you.
Well, he could have said “Everything we say is a lie.”
I imagine the reaction here would be something like this:
Actually, that’s probably pretty accurate…
I have perhaps grown cynical in my old age, but I tend to take anything and everything a game developer says (even the ones I like) with a cargo freighter (or two) of salt, so there’s not much he could have said beyond something like “Yeah, we intentionally mislead the horizontal GW1 type guys with our manifesto video and stuff so they’d buy the game, and now that we have their money we’re switching gears in an attempt to grab some quick cash from the folks out there who prefer the grindy vertical stuff and when that’s played out we’ll switch gears again and go for yet another crowd. Maybe even… your crowd! So stick around. Lots and lots of fun stuff yet to come!” that would have impressed me. Heck, if he’d said that I’d be tempted to spend moar $$$ on the game!
The only thing that stops me from laughing at this post is the realization people seriously expected malice where stupidity (even momentary stupidity) can explain it just as well. They had what they thought was a neat idea, developed it, and didn’t stop to think about the ramifications.
And it was after they proudly put it forth that it started to sink in . . . “oh no…”
Could they have known better? Probably, very much so. Unfortunately, this has happened, and it’s time to deal with it and move on. We can’t roll it back and pretend it never happened, we can’t not acknowledge it, because it did happen. And they made it clear they’re going forward with Ascended existing in the future, there’s not much changing that.
So it’s time to move on from it. Harsh, perhaps, but it’s okay if you want to leave over this. The game isn’t what you thought it would be, that’s fine. Go back to waiting for the one you want, just know this game is still here if you feel like coming back to kill time.
And you know what, if you are on my server or see me on an Overflow and don’t violently object to grouping up, I’ll happily go do some stuff with your group. All right? Fair enough?
Maybe it was stupidity on their part like you suggested. Perhaps it was just office politics. Like you said, its over. It’s time to either accept it or leave. However, Tachenon was right. Claiming that they didn’t stray from their manifesto and break their promises is another slap in the face. It happened. (a two year old could figure that out.)
No.
The strayed from YOUR interpretation of THEIR manifesto.
That is a big difference people don’t seem quite to be getting.
It wasn’t just his interpretation. It was the interpretation of many people. The evidence of that is on display here on the forums and by the questions asked in the AMA. What is worse, Anet was apparently aware of this (mis?)interpretation and let it propagate. Why else would they have anticipated a backlash?
I saw no reason to reply to his post. I am not going to sit here and argue that the sky is blue with someone who thinks its red. perhaps he was reading a different document? I have a hard time believing anyone could read the manifesto and draw his conclusion.
Let’s summerize: Ascended gear is here to stay. More infusions/gear will be rolled out over the course of next year. When players are finally done with all that nonsense they will raise the level cap, with that = new gear.
Last but not least, We imagined that this would be a low grind game. We must have misinterpreted the manifesto because they clearly think they did nothing wrong. Have fun in your game guys, I won’t be there to join you. I have something called a life. I refuse to endlessly grind gear that wil become obsolete.
What a let down. If they wanted to make this kind of game they just should have been up front about it.
True, but lets be real here, would they have gotten so much money at the start if they were upfront about going vertical progression ala wow? Mmm maybe not.
Just a thought..
That is a very short sighted way of thinking. I’ve bought a lot of games from them in the past. I’ve spent plenty of money. At least in the past, my decision to buy was informed. Did i always love what they delivered? No, but I knew what i was getting.
Now with these lies and deceptions they can no longer be trusted. Maybe they gained more in the short term by being deceptive, In the long run they lost though. The damage they did to their reputation will cost them way more than they gained.
What a let down. If they wanted to make this kind of game they just should have been up front about it. I’m sure there’s a market for it. It’s just not GW1 fans. Just because there’s some lore thrown in there doesn’t make it Guild wars.
I like the fact that this was a different game. I like the new mechanics. I think that there are some design flaws that they need to work out, but that I was willing to wait for.
Sorry to have to say this, but the devs have been systematicly destroying this game after the first three weeks. I really wanted to love this game. My only recourse is to not play/support the cash shop. (since a reund is not an option now) I also won’t be buying games in the future from you, certainly not at release..
The man spent 8 hours answering questions. I honestly don’t know what he could have said to appease you.

Will ascended by the last new gear level we see? Your statement on the forum said you aren’t interested in adding a new gear tier every three months, but a lot of people were unsatisfied with that answer.

Hi Soc,
Thanks for taking the time to send in some questions. We do not believe we have gone against any of our principals, but we do understand the concern regarding potential grind. We absolutely design everything we do with minimal grind and will continue with this principal moving forward.
1: I would prefer that we never say never but our intention is that in terms of ‘Named Tier (Rarity) of Loot’ Ascended will be with us for a long time and we will not introduce a higher tier of loot for the foreseeable future. There will be loot with different stats and new infusions within the current tier that will be spread over long periods of time (for example Ascended gear will be deployed over the whole of next year). 2: Ascended gear will be obtainable throughout the whole of the game aside from sPvP and in retrospect it would have been better to have rolled different acquisition methods out at the smae time os the FotM.
Chris

Only thing worth noting at this point, and what a lot of us have been waiting for… I guess…
This really should be stickied.
While I appreciate Chris’ candor. This answer is disapointing for sure. I really want no part of new stats/ new infusions, etc. He can’t even say with 100% certainty that this is the end of this power creep. I worked hard on my armor, a new teir is simply unnaceptable to me.
I’m sure others wil be relieved that there will alternate methods to obtain ascended gear. (I’m not) They are going to be rolling out ascended gear over the course of a year? Really? (not good)
Just the fact that they don’t believe that they strayed from their manifesto is troubling beyond words. In a strange way I am relieved to hear this, because now I know that they are the problem. There’s no turning back now. Characters are deleted and the software uninstalled.
Hope everyone had a happy thanksgiving,
I’m new to the guild wars world and I’ve enjoyed playing with my Asura engineer over the last couple of days. However I am seeing quite a bit of negative feedback towards the game on the forum.
In all honesty, is this a game worth sticking with or is it one already in a state of decline?
(snip)
There are serious concerns but I’m sure Anet will address them in time. They are most likely gathering their statements and bug teams together after the holidays to get the work completely that will return the current state of the game to it’s former glory (which was only 1 month ago btw).
The game started unravelling at 3 weeks in with the addition of DR. There’s been some major issues since then like the rare drop rates, MF, and the halloween fiasco. (I won’t bother brining up bugs. We know they are there and they are working on them.)
I am not as opimistic as you are about them fixing things. This new gear tier seems to be evidence that they are going in a new (undesirable) direction. I thought the jugs of liquid karma were as sign that they got it about gear grind, but I guess they didn’t.
The new gear treadmill is forcing people into dungeons, making the maps even emptier than ever. This makes the PVE pretty useless to play at the higher levels. DE’s don’t work. Many left the game already. I think they need to act swiftly if they are going to stem the bleeding. It may well already be too late.
It is worth sticking with.
Most of the negativity is overreacting and most of it comes from the same group of people.
Also keep in mind that happy customers tend to play the game and such instead of shouting about things on the forums. You know Every game that has failed people have said this. Do you know that you are doing Anet no favors by you falling into typical human reaction of thinking you are in the majority. Same thing happened to GoP during last election and is still happening. People think their views are only right ones and thus everyone must have them. So from now on state your opinion and leave it at that. Don’t make up fantasy situations that you can have no idea if true or not.
Of course every game that has failed has had people say this. Because, well, everything ends eventually. So, since everything ends eventually all you have to do to ensure “every game that has failed has had people say that” is pop on all the forums which exist and say this. Eventually the game will fail and you’ll be completely correct.
About the only game which hasn’t failed, yet, is Nethack.
I’d hardly call GW1 a failure. Sure it declined because of its age, but it didn’t fail, It had longevity. Failing and ending are two different things. I do think GW2 is failing ATM. It’s certainly not meeting its potential. Perhaps they can salvage it.
I guess the only real measure of success or failure would be the cash shop. Only they know how that is doing. Happy players spend money. I never spent a dime there. However, I would have gladly supported them if I was happy (and they offered something i wanted.)
Maybe this is a tangent, but they just offered junk imo. Perhaps someguild housing that offered free waypoint travel. Perhaps a golem banker that was permanent. I’d even buy account bound exotics/ legendaries. Sadly, none of that was offered and I was dissatisfied with the game anyway.
They sure as heck weren’t going to offer free waypoint use or Exotics for cash :P I think you expected way too much out of the cash shop.
And Guild Wars 1 is still going. For now. But it will get shut down eventually, that’s a solid prediction. Eventually. Not tomorrow, not next month but one day in the distant future it will end.
(And watch, Nethack will still be here. There’s no justice.)
The probably won’t do exotics for cash. Though, who knows the way things are going as of late? The waypoints would come with guild hosuing if they made it, because how else would you get in and out of your guild without travel? Nonetheless, I was just giving some examples of what I’d pay for.
As crazy as these things sound to sell, They will likely have to shore up the cash shop because they won’t have expansions like GW1. They are going to have to cross this bridge at some point. Probably sooner rather than later if the player drop off continues.
It is worth sticking with.

I think being new to GW may play to your advantage. May people who played GW1 for years had certain expectations of this game. It was supposed to be low grind. There was not supposed to be an emphasis on gear stat grind. (The manifesto said as much too) A series of blunders and changes which no one signed on for irked the player base. That is why you are seeing such volume of negativity here.
I have an opinion: I don’t think the game is fun anymore. It’s also not what I was promised. Changes implemented seemed to make things worse and worse. That said, If you are having fun = that is all that counts.
(edited by SHM.7628)
Protip: Ignore those talking about how the game is “in trouble” or the game “is dying” – at 9:45 a.m., PST, all servers were high or full. They enjoy being melodramatic.
Full or high servers mean that there’s a lot of accounts tied to the server. Doesn’t mean there area lot of people on them. You can be on such a server and it be empty.
Here’s a protip for you: Ignoring problems does not make them go away. This game has problems. However, if you like the game then I hope you have fun in it. Same goes for OP.
If its possible for you to get a refund, I’d get it and not look back. While you may not understand why people are posting such complaints while you are in a starter zone, You will understand soon enough. The game was kinda fun in the beginning, but once that new game smell wears off you realize there’s not much new here.
Of course, you can just play until you are no longer having fun anymore. Who knows? you may be one of those people who love the game. I hope you are, I wasn’t.
OP: let me explain what happened to cause the “inflammatory posts” you so loathe.
Example 1: Anet promises to do X, but never to do Y. Anet lays down this promise in a very important document. To stress its importance, it calls it a “manifesto”.
Anet does Y.
Players want security. They bought the game, invested time in the game, because they wanted X, not Y.
Anet says nothing.
Players, with nuance, say to Anet: hey, what’s happening? What are you doing to the game.
Anet says nothing.
Players become anxious. They want an answer. With more vigor, they want to know what’s coming. Speaking for myself, I convinced an entire guild to come to this game, because of promise X.
Anet says nothing.
Players become desperate. What do they have to say to get an answer? They now become rude, because they are angry. They feel they have been lied to, because the decision to do Y is not reversed. Even worse: Anet STILL says nothing.
This is just one scenario that is happening right now. Another example promise upon promise upon promise to the ranger community that things would be fixed for their class. Instead, they get severe nerfs to their class due to the introduction of “bug fixes” which introduce more bugs, lowering their overall damage by about 15 to 20 percent.
You have to understand that silence, as well as repeated broken promises, lead to anger. And rightfully so. I followed many posts on this forum from its very introduction until now. I read very quickly, so I’m able to read a LOT. I could see the shift. Heck, I could feel it! The players are, in my opinion, in no way to blame for the turn-around on this forum that you detected. It was a gradual process which, at many different points, could have easily been stopped by Anet had it decided to answer the core questions of its playerbase.
It’s been like a week. Clearly something big is going on over there. Give them time to figure out what’s going on. It’s completely unreasonable to expect them to have some sort of miracle statement when YOU want it.
The give them time argument has worn thin for me. They began major overhauls just three weeks into the games release. (starting with DR). Now less than 3 months in and there’s a new gear stat level?
They’ve had time and have used it poorly. It’s been one fiasco after another. Their fixes broke a lot of what was actually working. Rather than adding new content 3 months in, wouldn’t they have been better served fixing bugs like the atrocious camera?
We are three months in. does anyone have 5 -8 maxed characters in legendaries and exotics yet? Why are we even at the point of new stat levels? Not that we shouyld ever be, but its especially ridiculous so soon.
(edited by SHM.7628)
The biggest haters of the game are those who loved it most a week ago. There is no greater enemy to a game than a fanboi betrayed. I’ve gone from supporting this game with my heart and soul to wanting to see it burn miserably to the ground, and I’ll be neither quiet nor apologetic about it.
I am impressed. I’ve never seen anybody refer to themselves as a fanboi. The fact that the devs can chase away a player like you means they have real problems.
While I am not a fanboi, I feel I hd a lot invested. I anticipated GW2 for years. I prepurchased it. I played through the betas. I also tried to give consturctive feedback. I submitted bug reports/ Reported botters. I just feel there has been insult after insult.
I think you are going to get your wish. The game is crashing and burning. The servers are barren. The cash shop must have taken an enormous hit. In the end, that is really what is going to tell the tale. They at least implied that there would be no expansions like GW1, so the cash shop is their only means of sustaining themselves.
Inferior to most of the players.
Inferior to some. Again, overexageration and hyperbole are exactly what this topic is about avoiding.
. If only some, then why the huge uproar? Why the 12k thread?
Why? Because you are right.
One way or the other, The whole thing was more grind than I wated or had time for. I wanted to play the game they promised me. Remember the one where grind weasn’t present? where you could just enjoy the contenet?
That never happened! I wa always grinding karma,. Ok I didn’t craft and you did. You grinded materials or gold for them. who cares? It was grind all the same. Now there are fractals to grind.
You know when I had fun? When I wasn’t grinding but enjoying the content. There were some fun areas and DE’s but that all got lost in the shuffle.
(snip)
Also, take note. Nowhere in here did I say you were an idiot, or that you were wrong. to not like that stuff. Please don’t take it that way, it’s what you feel and it’s what you think. It’s valuable to hear this laid out in detail rather than “it’s all a grind!!!!!” with no details. Maybe it’ll help developers for other games reading these forums? I dunno.
I will tell you “you are wrong” for telling me I must hate that stuff I mentioned above.
I would never call you stupid or wrong for your opinion. Opinions are subjective. You are as entitled to yours as I am to mine. However, on these boards there seems to be an overwhelming consensus on the points I made. What’s more, there have been empty servers to back up the fact that people are highly upset and disapointed. Many people left the game.
It’s hard to look at what has transpired and not draw the conclusion that there are major problems here. Anet caused a good many of them with fixes to a system that was not initially broken.
I think there’s a tendency to demonize people with complaints on the forums. I think for the most part they’ve been reasonable. I don’t see people ranting about bugs. (there are still lots) People are annoyed at misteps, broken promises, and a deviation from the manifesto. Rightfully so!
Nice to hear some news/plans. However, I’m not buying a word that comes from ANet until I see it in action. The Ascended gear fiasco was enough for me. Not to mention the epic fail that was Lost Shores.
+1
You basically said it all.
When I was karma grinding I was doing events in areas that gave the most karma. It wasn’t fun. It was a chore.
You were grinding for Karma for your Exotics? I was working my crafting up and going on Black Lion for Ectoplasm (my luck is terrible) to make my own armor rather than chasing the Karma cost.
The benefit to my approach is that once I get to 400 Leatherworking, I can do the same for anyone else who wants it done and can fork over the materials.
The detriment is I was almost constantly going: “. . . okay now where the heck do I go to get Fine materials . . . they want HOW much on the trading post?”
One way or the other, The whole thing was more grind than I wated or had time for. I wanted to play the game they promised me. Remember the one where grind weasn’t present? where you could just enjoy the contenet?

The OP is right, certainly. Any cursory glance at the amount of flaming, exaggerated negativity should tell you that.
BUT: Don’t imagine that these constantly-furious forumgoers represent the average GW2 player. They believe they do, but they don’t. The average GW2 player cares a lot less, plays the game for fun, and probably only occasionally comes to the forums, if at all. I guarantee you.
And this is why the madding crowd does such a disservice to the game and the community: they create a very convincing, but very innaccurate, image of the playerbase and it’s opinions.
Balony! Many of the people who voice complaints cared deeply for the game. They anticipated it for years. They even pre-purchased it. What’s more these same players were ignored and constatly told to leave if they didn’t like it. Well, they did. Now the maps are empty.
If you see tons of complaints about the same thing then chances are they are not made up. Because you disagree with them you call them a minority. Then why are the servers empty? No, You are the minority They voted, they left. I for one heard them loud and clearly!
Furthermore, Anet did deviate from their manifesto. They had a player base from GW1 that was locked in too. They bought the game on good faith. The Devs betrayed them.
last but not least, they gave one game through the betas and the first 3 weeks, and trhen basically took that game back and replaced it with an inferior substitute. Yet some how you think those players are to blame?
They are spending time in the fractals a lot, because they can’t spend it anywhere else since nothing else will improve their character.
Yes. It’s because it’s human nature to constantly keep ourselves improve all the time. If it isn’t human nature to not improve themselves, they wouldn’t naturally chose to do fractals. In reality, people sub-consciously wants to keep improving and progress too.
Here’s the thing – they aren’t improving themselves by grinding.
The idea that people constantly want to improve themselves runs completely counter to the idea that people should be willing to spend an excessive amount of time grinding for gear in a MMO.
They really aren’t improving their characters either, since content is being adjusted to meet the new tier. Hamster meet wheel…
Agree. Perhaps I am the odd one out, but do you know when I really started to enjoy GW1? When i was done with the grind of getting my characters and their heroes done, and I could simply enjoy the content. Same with GW2 really. when I was done with the karma grind for exotics, I started to enjoy the content again.
When I was karma grinding I was doing events in areas that gave the most karma. It wasn’t fun. It was a chore. Now I have to do it fractals? No, Not gonna happen. I am done.
Was this all necessary? I mean we are three months in. Exept for the hardocre, I dobt everyone has all their characters in exotics. I don’t even think the elite are in all legendary weapons yet.
Hey..uh..does anybody every consider that the world is huge and full of stuff to do in your free time and that lingering on but one of those things screaming about how it should be changed to your liking is kind of insane? Realistically, if this game changed direction or you don’t like it anymore why not just go play a different game, or do something else entirely?
Ironicly enough, the did just that. They left. Now the maps are empty. Happy now? The few that doing fractals to grind out the new armor. Now the maps are emptier than ever.
Your “love it or lrave it attitude” is not good for the health of the game. It Behooves everyone for the game to be healthy. you can say, well there’s no sub. That is true, but if it doesn’t work out they can close the game down. Look at city of heroes.
(edited by SHM.7628)
I suppose it never occurred to the OP that there may in fact be legitimate things wrong with this game. While there’s been some very poorly expressed negative feedback at times, the proof is in the pudding. Meaning, I am not sitting alone on my server all the time because they got it right. 99% of the complaints are valid ones. Complaints about the camera, the grind, DR, the new stat gear tredmill are some examples of legit complaints.
There has been a mass exodus from GW2. You can deny it if you want, but its sadly true. They complained until they were hoarse, then they gave up and left. Everyone lost on this one.
This is a recreational activity. First and foremost it is supposed to be fun. I don’t think a stat armor treadmill is fun. Max armor/ weapons should be like buying a car. Maybe you’ll buy a Lexus or maybe you’ll buy a little compact. However, no matter what you buy you shouldn’t worry about whether the car is going to be capable of doing the speed limit. The car needs to be able to do that to be functional.
I am conservative in real life. I believe in working for what you get. I think by the time you put in the time to get your toon to level 80 that you have put in enough work to get a full max set of armor.
for the grinders and hardcore. There’s titles, elite skins, dungeons, etc that they can shoot for. I think that is how it should be. However,The idea that I have to have no life at all to enjoy the game and preform well in it is absurd.
We are three months after release and there’s a new stat tier? I worked hard on my exotics. I am tired of the grind already. Now my armor is obsolete? Plus I have to do dungeons now like it or not for the new armor? Unacceptable! especially so, since they promised no grind.
GW2 needs to and likely will soon do server mergers. Those people who say the servers are fine are likely on one of the VERY few servers that may have some people. But overall most servers are dead because the game isn’t all that and not getting any better.
Now those who are staying are all grinding out the ascended armor. It’ll only get more desolate from here. I can’t be bothered anymore. 2 sets of exotic were enough of a grind for me. I know there’s people who love his sort of grind, I am just not one of them.
I really don’t know what happened to Anet. I know they are ending city of heroes. Aion became a mess. Now GW2 has run amuck. I loved Gw1, maybe I’ll revisit it at some point, but the way things are going, they probably ruined that too..
