Mystic Forge Recipes?

in API Development

Posted by: Sariel V.7024

Sariel V.7024

I opposed earlier. I’m still opposing.

Unlike crafting recipes, which are often bought as sheets and remain forever documented in your UI after you learn them, the combinations of the forge are intended to be a puzzle. They are a secret, and their revelation to the world at large remains at the discretion of the players that discover them. Or, in a single case, at the discretion of John Smith ;D

Like dungeon exotic recipes, the products of forge combinations can be real money makers. But that only works while the combination remains a secret. If one person can work out something at the forge, there’s a very good chance that someone else will be able to replicate the discovery. But that doesn’t mean that the first person shouldn’t get to benefit in the interim.

At least, that’s the purpose I assume you are concerned with making an API for – to ensure that all discoveries immediately go public. In real terms, it would be functionally impossible to document every combination that could go in to and come out from the forge. The reason for this is because of the possibility to input random combinations of gear or upgrades in and get a random one back out. There’s about 30000^5 combinations to cover here just from weapons and armor alone.

Why does almost noone use the Unspoken Curse sword skin (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Unspoken_Curse)?
I feel like it looks pretty good while not being outrageously expensive.

Ah, the old-fashioned Flamberge. I had one back in GW1.

The real reason no one uses it…. look at it what it costs to make. 300 Ori ingots + 100 Destroyer Lodestones + 50 skill points for a sword with no visual bling. I’ve got multiple better uses for those kind of resources.

If they move to dynamic event rewards, that would be pretty close to what we have already with champ bags and scrolls. That would be a good-enough alternative, but I figured they would award only a few per story chapter.

[Question]Hello Mastery, good-bye Forging?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Sariel V.7024

Sariel V.7024

One of the bigger changes regarding Mastery is the acquisition of skill points. From what I have read, Skill Points will move from the current system (where you gain one for every level after level 80) to a new system where the supply of Skill Points is set in stone – only obtainable as predetermined rewards, at skill point challenges, and a few at a time at particular levels before 80. This supply will be updated from time to time with the introduction of new challenges, but the number available will now effectively be capped.

The immediate effect is that you have less to spend on skills and traits. This isn’t too big of a concern for long-time players, who probably have everything they want already unlocked. It might make new players pick and choose, but there should be enough points to go around for these purposes.

The problem I am worried about is, what happens in regards to skins only available through the Mystic Forge? Each one of these costs a minimum of 50 skill points thanks to Miyani’s Eldritch Scroll; each Legendary costs 250 SP because of the Bloodstone Shard, and The Anomaly tips the scale at 300 for both. Are there going to be enough skill points to go around? Will we still get free Scrolls of Knowledge from champ bags?

More of a concern to most players is a lack of Skill Points to get Crystals and Philosopher Stones. This will impact the availability of mid-range crafting materials and hit a lot of players who rely on selling upgraded materials in the pocketbook.

What’s going to happen here?

Legendary Weapons - an appeal to ArenaNet

Sariel V.7024

I want legendaries to be actual legends. Items of lore meaning and value. Right now they are just shiny skins with lots of particle effects and a few convenience features. There is no lore to them.

IMO Sohothin and Magdaer are more legendary than the current crop. I want legendary weapons that were wielded by legendary heroes with legendary powers. Artifacts of power that were crafted from powerful beings like Caladbolg was crafted from the Pale Tree, or the blade wielded by Balthazar himself, Urgoz’s bow that has grown more powerful over the last 250 years, the Scepter of Orr, a shield made from Jormag’s scale or a staff fashioned from Zhaitan’s rib.

Send us on legendary journeys, learning tales of lore which root these powerful items in Tyria’s past or present. Make them feel like epic adventures and not just epic grinds.

To me, this should ensure legendaries avoid the novelty problems of the Dreamer, Moot or Quip. Items like the Flameseeker Prophecies are far cooler than generic flashy weapon skins.

If you make them lore-centric, do you also make them unique? I mean truly unique, as in only one player ever gets it?

Having a greatsword that isn’t some bad reject from a miniatures game where everything has to weigh nine-hundred pounds makes it better than every other greatsword IN THE GAME (the Ebonhawk one is decent and a couple of the very plainest low level ones aren’t completely stupid). Now, if I could get that model leaving trails of light like Dawn, I’d go for it, but right now the whole class of weapons is in pretty bad shape.

DCing clears your event credit, so if you are dropped, you need to do something to get it back before the event ends; in about 99% of cases, this means get a kill credit on an event-connected enemy (others in the area will mix freely and can confuse the issue). Are you helping out your lane after you return? If you are, then you’ll need to get credit on a boss, which may not be possible. ;(

The lightning pull skill in sanctum sprint is totally broken now. I can no longer complete the course. The problem is when you reach the spots where you get an automatic lightning pull – one where you don’t have to select the target location.

It affects the manually-placed jumps too, in a different way. You will often land and continue rolling along. It’s not a problem in Sprint because places you need to land are either long enough to accommodate the roll or have a backstop.

I’ve given up on the sanctum sprint for now. I sincerely hope this bug can be fixed and does not propagate into other areas like dry top or bazaar and festival of the four winds if they ever come back.

This does bleed over into Dry Top and the Bazaar. The third crest collection achievement has one located on a short ledge reachable only by Lightning jump. It took me a good hour and several deaths to finally stick the landing. Bazaar is mostly safe. but there are a few places where you’re better off trying to use the Wind jump rather than the suggested Lightning.

Purple Ghostly skin: collection?

I guess this hasn’t been asked yet, so I’ll ask.

Why no SAB collection?

Collections should not involve skins/items that are not able to be collected through effort. There is currently no way to get these outside the trade post.

Are you saying sab weapons aren’t effort? also the trading post only has the blue weapons.

You can expend all the effort you want; you’ll never earn another SAB skin except by buying it off the TP. ;D

What I am saying is, until SAB returns and the skins can be gained through play again, they should not make a collection based on it. They are effectively unobtainable now. Hopefully the future will be kinder

Give it time. I imagine every themed set will get one eventually. Right now we have two collections that use crates of Charged Lodestones; they might be giving us time to get caught up with them.

There are always circumstances that can come up that cause someone to leave their machine. The phone rings. The doorbell rings. Nature calls and you absolutely could not tear yourself away before now. Dinner’s ready. The oven catches fire. The curtains catch on fire. Whatever. Emergencies happen. It’s in the word – emergent.

This happening once or twice is forgivable. But when a player establishes a pattern of sitting idle after tagging, then they’ve become a nuisance. Unfortunately, you can’t trust a player to be able to tell when someone is leeching versus them taking care of something IRL, unless they’ve been able to observe the leecher over several events. But the GMs should be able to check logs and at least get a good opinion if the idler is trying to exploit the events at the expense of other players.

Why exactly are you unable to use TS?

I’m not OP, but it took me 2 months of nagging my ISP for them to actually deliver close to their advertised bandwidth the last time I went toe-to-toe with them. That was the 3rd time I’d had to do it, too. I still lag out and dc, usually at critical moments that will determine if I get a reward.

Connection stability is far from a guarantee, particularly now that ANet seems to be having connection issues of its own, and I seriously don’t need anything else clogging my interwebz. That said, I’ll risk TS for this situation and this one alone, but I’ve only done it successfully once.

I can see why you want the API involved. The information you want is available, in pieces, across many sites and none of them (not even the wiki) has all of it. It’s difficult to put all of it together and still make it presentable. Worse still is keeping it updated, as some sources for items get removed from the game periodically, and others are added with almost every update.

Sariel V.7024

This is actually my favorite style of games, after RPGs. The merging with 3-D that the Castlevania series took post-PS1 did it no favors, IMO – exploration and discovery took a back seat to a poor-man’s fighting game; the Gameboy iterations remained strong, however.

This may seem contradictory, so read carefully:
Honestly, I don’t believe platforming works well in a 3D environment. You lose the ability to judge distances, and often you can’t see obstacles in your way or safe places to land. Most of the time, you don’t even get to see your feet or the lip of the pit you’re about to jump over. Platforming and 3D are generally a bad a mix. I say this as an avid fan of the JPs in GW2, because in most cases the devs have already considered and negated the pitfalls (pardon the pun) of the 3D approach (locked camera, 1st-person perspective, etc.).

Why am I going on about platforming? Because in the metroidvania style of games, exploration’s main hinderence is getting between point A and point B, which is often a matter of combining jump height and jump distance, or using key-type items/abilities to open locks, or maybe finding that hidden opening/wall you can break open.

We kinda have a lot of these already. The best examples are in Metrica, with the sidequests to get to the Steam Ogre, or into Oola’s Lab, or Goemm’s Lab. And I think the devs are doing a pretty good job so far. But if you didn’t like what you’ve seen so far, I’m not sure that you’ll enjoy anything new that might be coming :/

RNG as a concept: Discuss

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Sariel V.7024

There is no effective difference between the system you describe and GW2’s as it currently stands.

You’re out of your mind. If I took a week off and no-lifed GW1 FoWSC, I’d walk away with at minimum, Chaos Gloves with it being more likely that you could afford a Tormented Shield, a high req. Voltaic Spear and a nice Black finish to all of your crap.

Whaaaaaaatever. I no-lifed GW for several years, and I’ll be kitten ed if I ever came close to having enough to afford even one of those things. I still can’t get my obsidian armor. Which puts me in the same spot you claim to be in GW2 right now.

So then your argument probably becomes I didn’t waste my time doing the right things. Which again applies to you in your position in GW2.

[

Run specific content for skins? Maybe if you’re counting Tormented weapons, or throwing yourself at a boss over and over again in the hopes of getting its green. Just try to get a max rare Storm Bow, or Chaos Axe, or Golden Phoenix Sword, or even a max Katana or Tetsubo. Even Elemental Swords were hyperrare until someone figured out a boss you could farm for them. And Guild Wars Guru auction prices for dungeon skins were just as bad as Legendaries are today.

Uh, Underworld, FoW, Urgoz, Bogroots, Slavers…All ( and many more ) had specific drops that could only be got there, the Zaishen Chest, or from Hall of Heroes chest. Keeping these items locked behind content kept the demand high.

[/quote]

And you utterly missed the point of that paragraph. Try reading it again. Certain skins couldn’t be farmed by ‘traditional’ means.

My main point still stands. NO. EFFECTIVE. DIFFERENCE.

RNG as a concept: Discuss

Sariel V.7024

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Rare skins are just as farmable in this game as they were in its predecessor. It ranges the whole gamut of can’t-give-it-away common all the way up to consign-your-life-away impossible to find.

Uhmm yeah…gonna have to call you out on this. I had over 16k hours in gw1 and was a moderator for gwguru ventari’s corner (the buy/sell section).
The reason the super expensive r7s in gw1 were so pricy is b/c they were no longer available as drops in the game. There were only a few of them floating around after being patched out. Those weapons/minis/etc…mainly got traded back and forth between the same players. In other words the high end traders basically traded them amongst themselves. The farmable skins aka mid ranged were very much directly farmable and it showed. UWsc for eternals, SoOsc for bds, FoWsc+vssc for vs, Frostmawsc for silverwings, etc etc…In gw1 there were very specific farms for certain items that had relatively expected returns.

What do we have in gw2? A few world boss skins (final rest, jormag’s breath, etc) that are time gated and are pure crapshoots?

I wasn’t talking about r7s. I’m talking about r9s with inscription slots and damage range at max – what people generally considered as perfect. Anything else was trash, unless it was something like the BDS.

As for GW2, all exotic skins (approximately 200 weapons) that aren’t precursors or forge-exclusive are tied to specific regions, enemies, or types of enemies. Just like in its predecessor. You don’t feel like researching what drops from who/where? Not my problem and beside the point You don’t think those items are ‘farmable’? Not my problem and beside the point The essence here is that they are acquired in the same manner as they were in GW1. The problem is players don’t have patience.
