P/D Condition - Help me learn this?

Hm, I’ve decided to (once more) give P/D condition a try as well. Now today I’ve fought that S/F-ele, and while he couldn’t really kill me because I usually could go and hide in stealth, I also couldn’t kill him. Somehow he almost always managed to run in a way that my CnD wouldn’t hit, and if he didn’t, he surely blinded me. He also seemed to dodge or go invulnerable on my sneak-attack most of the time. Whenever I got him a bit lower, he would hide inside his Swirling Winds and heal up. Not to mention he often had 20+ stacks of might, although some of those might have been from me shooting at him with Fire Aura on. Meh… I just couldn’t really harm him. Eventually, a Thief from his server showed up and CnD’d-steal-ed on me for like 5,5k followed by a 9,5k Backstab… the fight was over quickly after this.

Now I wonder… how do you fight such an opponent?

We know ‘no update during ’leagues’, but we also know anet likes to bundle updates rather then do them one by one.

It’s gonna be really sad if we don’t get it in the feature update. As for the whole “no changes” thing, they reneged on that when they added the toxic stuff to the WvW maps mid-season. The pessimist in me is conflicted; do they lie about no changes, or do they delay it so long that the season is over by the time we finally get it?

You do realize that the whole feature patch already is a bunch of HUGE changes mid-season, right? Like, adding new traits, changing crit-dmg, etc. Making wxp accountbound would be a minor change in comparison. Thus, the “no changes thing” doesn’t have any influence on this at all.

This thread is from an other age.

The current thief fotm revolves around S/P, crit/trick, 2 > 3333 > 4 > whichever shadowtep > 33333 and 3333, and in some other cases 3333.

Also, if you need to play defensively, don’t forget 3333.

Please teach me how to have enough initiative to use Pistol Whip multiple times (more than three times) in a row; especially without hitting anyone with it, because all they need to do is to not stand next to you while you’re spamming 3. The only thing you’ll land while spamming 3 is the first half of your first Pistol Whip. Unless the player you’re attacking is afk, of course.

Do i really need to explain this to you ?

a/ It cleaves, and even better, it actually has a bit of reach BEHIND the thief
b/ 2 : Immob
c/ Devourer venom
d/ Haste / Critical Haste
e/ Enemy moves > steal / infiltrator signet
f/ 15ini + 1/s + 1/10s + 1/5s + 3/steal (21s)
g/ Use your last living brain cell to wait one or two second before the next 3
h/ You foe is actually here to fight you, strangely enough many of them need to be next to you to do that
i/ 3 times in a row without a single pause (nor a thought) is already A LOT
j/ I dont care, first comes the l2p, then comes the nerf.

This may work in PvP, but I doubt it would be really viable in WvW. That build you’re describing is most likely 10/30/0/0/30, with the utilities being Infiltrator’s Signet, Devourer Venom and Haste. If you want to avoid having no condition-removal aside from sword 2 and your heal, you’ll have to take Lyssa runes and Basilisk Venom, which means you will rely on Swiftness on Steal to move anywhere in a decent amount of time (or to run away faster when needed). Oh, and of course the only stunbreak you have teleports you right next to your target, which is kinda bad if you want to get out of a dangerous situation. Hm, now that I’m writing about it, I guess it would make more sense to go 0/30/0/10/30 for swiftness on dodge and vigor on heal, while using Withdraw of course. Still looks like everything has to go right, though… one mistake or one thing happening that wasn’t expected, and you’ll decorate the floor with your corpse. Now you could go 0/20/0/20/30 of course to get an additional dodge and Pain Response, but then your damage-output would be a fair bit lower. And I’d still say it’s a bit risky overall. Well, whatever.

I read the terms and asked what if I time it so the macro presses at the average rate of a person, around 10 clicks a second max.

Lol; I really want to see how you click 10 times a second manually. If I click like a madman, I get like 5 and a half clicks at most in a second.

Make that one doubleclick each second, and I would agree that it wouldn’t be an unfair advantage. It would allow you to save your finger and your mouse, while being a little bit slower than doing it manually.

in WvW

Saturn.6591

We assume that they won’t put that in it until season 2 is over because making account bound WXP implies a trait reset (What would happen if a char has different/same traits than another one… how do they merge? The easiest thing is just to reset them)

I don’t see how that would be a problem. If the total earned wxp on all of my characters together makes for lvl 70, promote all my chars to WvW-lvl 70. No need to reset any spent points for that. You would just get a bunch of additional points on every character. So I really don’t see how you’d get the idea that resetting WvW-perks is needed or makes things easier for implementing accountbound wxp.

and the mail that you get just after logging in tells you that we won’t get any more trait resets until the season is over.

So either:
-> We really won’t get account bound WXP at least until june
-> The mail text it’s a copy-paste from Season 1, and they will reset the traits again before the next season starts.

Hm, I’ve never gotten such a mail. Not before season 1, and not this time. All I got when I logged in after patching was a note in the chatwindow which said something like “Your spent wxp-points have been reset.” No mail at all. The only mail I got was from Kasmeer, inviting me to celebrate with her and the others.

Can be used for both. Not sure I’d credit it to Caed though, think somebody else may have created the build. Not sure though.

Anyhow, my analysis on different thief builds (based on weapon sets and trait distribution)…

Weaponsets

D/P and S/P- both ridiculously overpowered for what incredibly little skill their builds require. Easily the two best thief weapon sets the class has. Great for bursters.

S/D- far more difficult to play than D/P or S/P, though certainly no more difficult than any other “difficult” build in the game (and all of the most “difficult” builds in the game that aren’t completely UP are pretty easy to play anyways). Good for bruisers.

P/D- just a terrible weapon set (though not as bad as P/P). This weapon set will never be good in any game mode. Won’t even grace this abomination with any more of a description.

P/P- won’t even grace this disgusting nonsense with any description whatsoever.

Trait setups

25 30 0 0 15- the build that nobody uses any more. It’s still pretty good, but its damage focuses more on stats than trait allocation, as is the case with 10 30 0 0 30.

X X 30 X X- just a completely unskilled build that’s only good for noobs in WvW that have ascended gear and would otherwise wimp out with any other build.

X X (Anything other than 30 or 0) X X- see above. Slightly less wimpy, but still pretty unskillful.

10 30 0 30 0- an S/D setup. Pretty easy to play IMO.

0 30 0 30 10- another S/D setup. Also pretty easy to play, though not as much as
10 30 0 30 0.

10 30 0 0 30- a setup that can be used with S/D, S/P, D/D, or D/P. Probably the more skillful than 10 30 0 30 0 and 0 30 0 30 10 (assuming you’re running S/D), though S/P and D/P builds with this setup are just… Ridiculous. Any D/P or S/P build running these traits is probably going to be the best thief build the profession has at the moment.

10 0 0 30 30- another S/D setup. Roughly as skillful as 10 30 0 0 30, maybe slightly less (but more so than 0 30 0 30 10). These S/D builds are fun and solid but ultimately worse than 10 30 0 0 30 D/P or S/P.

tl;dr of Arganthium’s post: Thieves are either overpowered or underpowered. There’s only one main weapon-set that’s okay, and even that one doesn’t require a lot of skill to play. If you build for anything that has decent survival, you’re a noob. Also, playing a Thief doesn’t really require any skill at all (except maybe if you try to win with P/P), even without Shadow Arts. With Shadow Arts, they play themself, since you are invincible.

And now excuse me; I have to decide if I should laugh, cry, facepalm or all of them.

Yeah I know, I was making a point of how for once it did its job and not got you killed

??

What he means is, that often (especially as a D/D-Thief) this trait will put you into stealth while you’re attacking someone (usually with autoattacks). Because you are attacking, it will give you the revealed-debuff and thus you can’t stealth when you actually would have wanted to stealth… depending on the situation, this can get you killed. This time (in the video) however, it worked as intended and did save a life instead of taking it.

Thieves used to be the same about a year ago, but after all nerfs and minor buffs thrown around, we are now stuck with 10/30/0/x/x, there are other builds out there that are fun to play and personal, but often they are underperforming and doesn’t feel competitive enough, and I don’t have this feeling when trying builds alternate to the meta builds on the classes I mentioned.

I haven’t seen a 10/30/30/0/0 build in quite a while honestly.(N.b. you don’t have to type x since with that setup, you don’t have room for more trait points). Most people run alternatives now since shadow arts is crap in pvp …

You do realize that his example has 0 in Shadow Arts and thus typing x makes perfect sense, right? ^^

I’ve had the “pleasure” of fighting you guys a couple times this week. So annoying. ;P

Basically, it’s hard to focus you guys down because you’ll just run out of sight in stealth if you get low. And if we get one of you downed, there will surely one or two of you to get him up in Shadow Refugee. Makes for some looong fights. I remember when we were once fighting over a camp and I eventually died, I was like “screw that” and went to Hills instead, which was being attacked. It’s very hard to get rid of you guys, even when outnumbered. But I guess that means you’re doing your job well. ^^

Stun with pistol whip.

If you can land it. That’s actually not as easy as it seems, because targets tend to move.

Large aoe damage with Pistol whip.

IF you did hit with the stun, about half of it will hit the target, assuming no stunbreak is used.

Evade with Pistol Whip.

Well, yeah. You can’t get hit during the flurry. However, using it defensively often will get you killed, because it does the stun-part first which doesn’t evade… an during that time, whatever was coming at you, will have hit you already.

Interrupts with Pistol (and Blind if used in field).

Other classes have interrupts too. Also, if you use Blinding Powder and Headhshot right after, you will have burnt all your initiative without doing any damage.

Aoe blind with Pistol.

Almost completely useless for defense outside of PvE.

Whirling Axes Blind spam with Pistol Offhand. Reflect with Whirling Axes. Whirling Axes doing large aoe damage.

It’s a stolen skill from Warriors and can only be used once. And if you’re using it while standing in Black Powder, you’re stupid. Because if you do, you will hit nobody with it at all, unless that someone is even more stupid and autoattacks you with a melee-weapon during the cast. And the reflect is easy to avoid as well… don’t shoot at the Thief. Especially not with Killshot.

Large kitten teleport. Clears 3 condis. Can be used to decap and still rubberband back in time.

You forget that this skill has a cooldown of 50 seconds.

Can teleport in, spam EVADING pistolwhip that STUNS and teleport out. Rinse and repeat.

Can’t do that very often, due to initiative-cost. Also, a staff Ele standing at range and casting AoE’s on you would be much more dangerous in this case.

STEALTH – The concept of getting the first hit (that blinds -_-) is kittening OP.

Dodge or use any skill that lets you avoid an attack. Also, there are no stealth-attacks that blind you, so the “kittening OP” thing doesn’t even exist.

Poison field from shortbow, doesnt break stealth either (wtf?).

It doesn’t do any direct damage; that’s why. It’s not really relevant for anything either. Unless you get killed by Thieves who shoot poison fields at you while in stealth.

Sorry, I wasn’t aware that you and Liza are the same person.

So okay; you’re now saying that spamming stealth is OP then and there’s no counter to that. Well, hint: There are plenty of counters. You can find them explained in countless threads all over the class-forums.

And since you’re so focused on sPvP: Most (good) Thieves there do not spam stealth. It’s bad, because you can’t contest points while being stealthed.

Also, give the people a break. You said Backstab is OP and you said other classes can’t do such damage on such a low cooldown. You were proven wrong, and then you said “PvP or WvW” and the answer was “it’s possible there as well” and your reply “you lie it’s not possible in PvP”… uff. You know… Backstab also does less damage in PvP than it does in PvE or WvW.

So first you claim that you were not talking to me, when you actually quoted my post and wrote your reply below that quote. Now that this didn’t work, you claim that I could have been the guy attacking the Thief in my example. Again wrong, and I’ll explain you why:

“Believe me when I say that whenever I’ve tried to facetank someone who’s not an NPC while standing in Black Powder, I’ve not done so for very long before I had to dodge out and heal up.”

1. I’m mentioning that I could attempt to facetank NPCs while standing in Black Powder. However, the only NPC I know of who uses this skill is the Thief NPC in the mists. You need a big amount of fantasy to even assume that I’m refering to that NPC.

2. If I would not be the Thief in this example, Black Powder would have no effect whatsoever on my ability to facetank someone. On my ability to do damage, yes. But not on my ability to facetank, since that’s about receiving damage and not about dealing it. Thus, it’s obvious that I’m the Thief in this example.

I get all excited when opening bags from events and hear that only to find out it was some stupid crafting material I will never use. I be all like “Sweet an exotic!” Nope just more worthless Bloodstone dust let me add it to the 15 other stacks I have collecting dust on an Alt. Its like Christmas morning. Get all excited then BAM! dreams dashed.

The less you expect, the less you will get disappointed. Seriously.

Here, gifts are given on holy eve. However, I don’t expect to get any, and thus I’m not disappointed at all if I don’t get any. Last christmas, I’ve actually gotten a small one, and it was awesome (because I didn’t expect it at all). First christmas gift in like 12 years!

Also, it doesn’t matter WHAT it is. The gesture is what counts.

However, for the events this time I didn’t need to, because when I’ve actually noticed that achievement, I remembered which of those events I’ve not done yet; simply because I knew “Hm, I’ve not even seen Lawson Marriner even once since I’m playing this game, so I know I did not escort him yet”. Or “I’ve done children and Dolyaks multiple times, but I know that I didn’t escort any Moas yet”.

Is there any 1vx build left?

Easy. If those two people are elite, you have to be Chuck Norris. Otherwise, you won’t win. This rule applies to all classes; not just Mesmer.

Mesmer as a class is ...

All classes I’ve lost against are clearly overpowered. All classes I’ve lost with are clearly underpowered. Therefore, all classes are overpowered and underpowered at the same time.

(Okay, I admit I did not play all the classes vs other players yet, but that doesn’t change my point.)

And to also provide the answer to the seemingly absurd statement I’ve made above: Skill. That, and the situation.

But yeah, crying overpowered or underpowered is so much easier than thinking about what went wrong and how to become more skilled.

Stealth and clones bug?

in Thief

No need to feel sorry; otherwise you also need to feel sorry for them that they can still be hit by attacks while in stealth.

You cast the clone before the Thief enters stealth —> the clone leaps to their position --> Thief enters stealth during the leap and doesn’t dodge away from the clone that runs to the last known position of the Thief —> you swap with the clone and the Thief gets immobilized and then killed --> the Thief obviously made a mistake and thus died.

Mistakes happen in most fights, because if two players play 100% perfect (and on that skill-level I just assume they also have decent builds) and also do not get interrupted, it will end up being a veeeeeeeeeeeeeery long fight. One that only ends once one of them really needs to go pee and goes afk. Or gets distracted by that pressure so much that he makes a mistake… oh wait. ^^

Believe me when I say that whenever I’ve tried to facetank someone who’s not an NPC while standing in Black Powder, I’ve not done so for very long before I had to dodge out and heal up. And I’m NOT full glass. So I guess you must be trolling.

who me? bet 25g or something nominal in the range and ill make a video showing you how silly you sound.

If you would have taken the time to actually READ my post, you would have noticed that I don’t feel like blackpowder is overpowered at all. Thus, my post is obviously directed at those who say it is… which is not what you are saying. But judging from the fact that you instantly start to challenge people for no reason and want to bet for gold, I shouldn’t be surprised that you’ve missed the point of my post.

i was talking to all whom think BP is OP. if that includes you then yeah,….if it doesnt then i wasnt talkuing to you….if u read other’s comments….

Now that’s a lame excuse. You actually QUOTED ME. And if you quote me, I take it that you’re talking about what I’ve written in that quote. I mean… that’s the purpose of quoting, right? To make clear to what you are responding to. So my point still stands.

Just for evidence:

$12.50 Charge for Convenience of Lions Arch

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

All the services in the game are available between Vigil Keep and Rata Sum for free. For someone whose computer meets the recommended specs the travel time from the mystic forge in Vigil Keep to the crafting tables in Rata Sum is barely any longer than the time it took to run between the two points in Lion’s Arch.

This. So much this.

You now have to pay waypoint costs, whereas you didn’t before (openworld -> WvW = free, Asura gate from WvW -> LA = free).

Vigil’s keep -> mystic forge -> asura gate to Rata Sum. You can repeat the process in reverse too. No costs for anything. Also Vigil’s keep -> WvW free and WvW -> character select -> vigil’s keep free

yes cause i totally want to spend most of my time in the loading screen rather then doing stuff in the game ;-)

Loading screens for waypointing inside LA often were longer than the ones you have between Vigil Keep and Rata Sum. And there’s no loading screen at all for waypointing inside Rata Sum. Add to this that everything is much closer together in those two places than it was in LA (which saves a lot of running time), we now actually have MORE convenience than before.

1200 Citizens Change - THANK YOU!

I was surprised that we actually went for citizens when I joined LA this evening and got into the main map. We’ve gotten around 1300 or so saved, which was really nice. I’m very glad that I was at least once present when this number is reached. Makes me feel like we’ve really done our best and that we’ve successfully saved all (or most) of the people that were still alive.

I DONT want to see them!

Saturn… I dont want to join any squad! I just wanna do my thing, see MY party members and not a thousands of commanders… If I’d join any squad, it would be anyone from my Guild most likely, not just some random to get rid of most of the tags…

Toggle off commander tags! Easy, dont have to type things every single time u enter a map…

You don’t lose anything by joining a squad. You don’t need to run with that commander. He also (as far as I know) will not even know that you’re in his squad, unless he uses a command that he probably doesn’t even know.

Stealth and clones bug?

in Thief

It’s not hard to tell what happened. You used skill 3 while the Thief was still visible and created the clone. The clone leaped to the Thief, crippling him. In the meanwhile (right after the clone was casted), the Thief went into stealth. Then you swapped positions with the clone, which triggered a small AoE-immobilize that hit the Thief because he didn’t move far yet (because you swapped positions so fast). Then you’ve hit Sword 2, which downed him. Working as intended.
