I would suggest Executioner over Potent Poison. Executioner practically gives you a solid +10% on all damage. This build deals hybrid damage. If it dealt damage, exclusively, with poison, then potent poison would be most effective. I assume you will get a higher return from the additional 10% of all your non-poison damage than you would from the +33% poison duration.

Also, the stats on gear have been increased by 30%, but the bonus to condition duration on Giver’s weapons remains at +10%. The build might be more effective if you use Sinister weapons instead of Giver’s. This is especially true if bosses are dying in a matter of seconds.

You’d think that, but you’d be wrong. Because spider venom uses the enhanced version even on allies, and your auto attacks poison, and all your attacks have a chance to poison, the enhanced poison trait DOES come out a lot higher.

When I originally made this build I had sinister weapons, but after testing sinister weapons and giver weapons with every sigil combination that matters, this one was the highest damage.

DnT: The most important brick of the least important wall. You’d think they’d pick a game with actual PvE content that doesn’t seem like it came right out of 1998 to try and be snob about. But you’d be wrong.

As for OP, you seem to mistake DPS and Damage per Cast. Death Blossom isn’t 16k dps because it deals 16k per cast. It’s initial damage + (16k/bleed duration) = dps.

You are correct, but over a 32 second burst, all the of the conditions from the first burst of venoms, calitropes, and death blossoms have run their course. So they apply all of their damage. The only DPS your losing is a few bleeds and poisons still ticking at the end of the boss fight.

there are other classes and builds that are higher than 16k.

I mean lets be honest here though, Icebow is the meta, it’s always been the meta, and it will be the meta till it gets nerfed. These builds are just for us plebs that like playing classes other then the elementalist :P

Also I edited my claim so yall wouldn’t get all butthut about me saying my build was the best in the game, that honor solely lies with all of the DnT builds.’

Best way(s) to restore initiative?

I used a signet build where I got a point of initiative back every time I used a signet, but the trait that used to allow that called “Signet Use” has been removed from the game.

So what are my options now for restoring initiative besides “roll for initiative”?

Is a signet build even viable anymore?

1)Dagger training is horrible trait – apply max 4 stack poison with 100% condi duration
2)Potent poison – funny trait to
3) Giver’s weapons ? Waste tons of conditions DMG -> you have all ready 100% bleeding duration and 93% poison duration when you use Sigil of Venom (sigil of bursting is waste money for nothing)

Much better is Trickery witch caltrops, Deadly arts with trap traits and Improvisation
Utility skills needle trap + caltrops.

BTW I have no idea where you make 16k sustain DPS Me record is 55x bleed stack on target. I must use on this 2x needle traps 2x caltrops and 2x F1 + caltrops on dodges = 9k DPS with 2450 condition DMG You make maybe 40x stack poison and 20 stack bleeding when you use venom share on five targets = 3300 bleeding dps and 7220 poison DMG with 2450 condition dmg. 32 sec CD on venoms and max 12 sec duration.

I bet you dont even have a spreadsheet.

What do you think about Resourceful Trapper instead of Panic Strike and using Needle Trap instead of Caltrops? Wouldn’t that be even more damage (more condition damage, might and vulnerability)?

I didn’t even think to run the numbers on the new needle trap! Good catch, after doing the numbers needle trap did come out on top.

It runs smooth, it’s easy to use, has great survivability. It has a sustained dps of ~12k and a burst of 16kdps/30sec

You actually have way more damage that got rolled in and from traits you can pick now, and because your not locked into picking initiative traits you get to pick up a TON of utility from other traits.

The only thing p/p lost was a tiny bit of range, and ricochet.

I can’t to get my head around the fact that thieves are one of the squishes classes which would mean it would have to have a lot of evades or knockbacks’ just to survive. Any thoughts on how how a thief will survive with another horn cause I just don’t see it working…

After they change it so conditions stack past 25, a thief with 2 sets of daggers, haste, caltropes, and shelk venom with a newtrait venomshare/sigil of geomancy/quickpockets/condition build. Will be putting out close to 15k TICKS from his conditions (30+ bleed, 25 poison, 15 torment) and that’s all laid on in the first 5 seconds of the fight.

For the short burst fights in dungeons that last less then 30 seconds, it will no doubt become the meta build (assuming they dont nerf venoms)

Ikr I mean since they took of infusion of shadows we need something that will replenish our initiative gain.

They are trying to remove Perma-stealth. It’s just a shame they don’t realize you have to kitten yourself to the point of only being useful in WvWuplevelganking to achieve “perma stealth”

And it’s a shame they are killing the standard/easy/newscrub theif PvE D/D rotation of CnD-BS-Chain-Repeat

I’ve only heard two things:
1. SR is so strong it makes the other 2 grandmaster traits pointless, you may as well just spec a different line.
2. SR does not replace infusion of shadow for certain builds.

Wether it’s worth changing is up to AN to decide, but these changes were PREVIEWED early so AN could get FEEDBACK.

Stop telling people not to give feedback…

Deadly Arts – Going to be used in almost every single build, that might be a problem. LOVE the focus on traps. Improvisation still feels a bit underwhelming with the “random skill recharged” when compared to it’s other grandmaster traits.

Improvisation hinges on the changes they will make on the stolen items. As far as those items are concern, all they’ve mention is that those items will lose the ability to deal damage. So far, the only plus is having to use 2 Mesmer stolen items — if it stays as is.

It also hinges on how heal and elite skills will now all belong to existing skill categories. So that means that no matter what your build, each usage of steal now has a 20% chance of recharging your heal or elite. Previously you could only do that with venoms or Signet of Malice, and I think SoM was taken more for its passive than its active.

1D5 roll of a dice is not really that exciting because you can’t really build around RNG. It’s nice when it resets your Elite but that doesn’t make this trait more appealing because it already balances itself in this regard.

As it currently stands, improv is still worthless BUT Anet is rebalancing all the stolen items SO there’s not much point arguing about it until the stolen items are rebalanced.

Pretty good suggestions.

I’d rather have a set % amount of cooldown cut from equipped utilities on Improvisation than fully recharging a random one. Also, considering the rework they said they’ll do on the bundles, using them twice might turn to be a good/bad idea.

The merging of SP and HD sounds good for a GM.
And of course, the ToC buff on might stacks is something we’ve all been waiting for some time.

On another note, I also liked the Shadowstep on Hard to Catch, but seems like some people didn’t. I’m ok with that either way.

For Hard to Catch, if they added 1 or 2 seconds of stealth it would give the thief time to reorient or fire off a shortbow attack. That might be too OP for PvP though :P

^nothing is really changing unless you ran SA traitline. its mainly the blind on stealth trait that everyone is annoyed about. I mean you can live without it, but it def made life alot easier.

It was one of the single best traits for leveling your character, it made you practically invincible with infusion of shadow.

CnD → BS → mob misses you → Auto Chain → Repeat

Critical Strikes – It’s too PvE focused, the only trait worth getting in PvP is Hidden Killer and most builds won’t waste the time. I would merge pistol range increase into Ankle Shots and move the 10% damage up to Ricochet so there are more options for pistolplay. Combo Critical Chance is very underwhelming; kick it up to 10%.

Shadow Arts – Desperately needs some kind of damage bonus or might generation. I would suggest merging Shadow Protector and Hidden Assassin so stealthing yourself and allies gives 10 seconds of regain and 15 seconds of mightx2. Also it’s hard to tell but Shadow’s Rejuvenation should let a thief run CnD -> BS -> Autochain -> Repeat without running out of initiative.

Acrobatics – Looks great, lot’s of endurance play. Assassin’s Reward is pretty bad still, would reccomend buffing it or replacing it all together. I’d like to see something in this traitline that increases condition damage in some way, maybe replace assassin’s reward with a trait that increases the evade on deathblossom up to .75 seconds?

Trickery – Thrill of the Crime needs to be kicked up to 2 or 3 might stacks, or have the duration of the buffs increased. Flanking Strikes will get a lot of people killed but otherwise is pretty strong.

Other then that there’s not much to comment on. With the changes to poison (stacking intensity instead of duration) you can almost bet there will be a re-work to Spider Venom. Some initiative regaining traits have been removed so we might also see a buff in the base recharge.

tl;dr
-Merge Shadow Protector and Hidden Assassin so stealthing yourself and allies gives 10 seconds of regain and 15 seconds of mightx2.
-I’m worried Deadly Arts tree has too many required traits and will be in almost every thief build which will limit diversity.
-Spider Venom + Venomshare is the new Icebow

Just a percentage counter would be nice I guess, but since most of the bosses don’t have phases like in some other games it’s not really a huge issue, at least not with anything that I’ve run into yet.

So for longer fights I came up with a slightly improved rotation for D/D thieves. The general concept is your using the initiative you gain from Infusion of shadow (instead of taking Flanking Strikes) to replace Lotus Strike (7866dps) with a Heartseeker. (8977, 13467dps)

Old Rotation 6/6/0/0/2 (Flanking Strikes)
The current D/D Rotation

New Rotation 6/6/2/0/0 (Infusion of Shadow)
(Boss health 50%+)
(Boss health 25%-%50%)

(Not this method ALSO makes Infusion of Shadow builds have more burst damage in short fights, by replacing every, or every other lotus with a Heartseeker instead of every third lotus)
FS Burst Rotation
IoS Burst Rotation
*FS burst does get 5% more damage for the end of fight HS spam, but the IoS rotation is comparable if not better.

Right now me being a thief or not being a thief sort of depends on this. I tried it at low levels and hated having to tab target just to tag and having to run away from anything that looked remotely threatening.

Some people have told me it gets better later and that it gets some sort of AOE. Others have told me to stay clear and just go SB (which is okay…but clunky as hell).

Any thoughts?

Gw2 Content doesn’t require you to top DPS charts, or have 100% Dodge.
It’s a game where you play what you like. If you like the look of Dual Pistols then go for it, it’s fun.

Just expect to get kicked out of a lot of dungeon groups if you pug.

Dual pistols with unload skill (#3) is the highest single target ranged damage for a thief.

If you mean burst damage yes, technically to spam detonation on the shortbow you have to be at close range so unload is the ONLY ranged burst damage the thief has.

If your talking about rotations using unload/vitalshot then shortbow still does more DPS.

Spamming unload with actual trait investment will do fairly well in terms of DPS numbers. Only D/D and S/P can beat it as long as you don’t waste your time on ricochet or trait into SA :P

By trait investment if you mean initiative, your actually wrong, traiting for damage will give P/P better damage then traiting for initiative.

And your wrong about how much DPS it does, Shortbow still does more dps against single targets.

I did some testing last night. Best I could get with P/P was about ~80% ‘dps’ of what S/P could do.

Closer to 71%

First of all, if your running P/P, you still get more dps out of a 6/6/x/x/x build, initiative regain for more unloads is NOT more dps then the massive bonuses and base stats you get from the other trees.

At level 80, full ascended berzerker, no group buffs, all 3 sigils
For a Unload-Vital-Unload-Vital-Vital rotation, P/P comes out to 2636 DPS
For Shortbow, ClusterBomb-Trickshot rotation takes you up to 2785 DPS

S/P
Pistol Whip (Sword/Pistol)-Slice-Slash-Pistol Whip (Sword/Pistol)-Sword #1
3712 DPS

D/D
Cloak and Dagger-Backstab (Back)-Dagger #1
4718 DPS

Haters are going to say “well I can spam unload and do more burst damage” but they fail to realize that spamming Unload would only net you 3413 DPS for about 6 seconds. Spamming Clusterbomb at short range with detonate cluster will net you 4228 DPS for 5 seconds

So you see, shortbow does more AoE dps (since trickshot is only counted as hitting once in my calculations it actually has even more dps when hitting 2+ targets) and it does more single target dps. P/P sucks in sPvP, it sucks in PvE, and WvW its pretty bad compared to the shortbow.

If you check out the dulfy guide, 90% of the build applies to P/P there is so much misinformation in this forum post its rediculous
