I feel that the SB (being the most popular weapon) is also the most boring. When I first unlocked QZ + SB i was giddy. Now it’s flavorless. I’ve since switched to anything-but-SB. Mostly melee because even LB is a little flavorless (and weak).
I’d like to see more synergy with the pets (as someone above mentioned). The shouts are…ok…but I never use them. Wish I could ride my black bear into battle. That’d be a great elite: Hop on your pet’s back and charge into battle like a medieval jouster, gaining swiftness, fury, & a big kitten lance.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I was heartbroken that I wasn’t allowed to name my river drake Dopey.
Me too! Well, my blue moa. He is now “Dopie”
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
stop smoking weed man! j/k – that is weird. you sure the pet belonged to the guy you say was a ranger? pets have a mind of their own sometimes and can wander quite far. it’s possible it was a ranger’s spider but the player nearby was a mesmer.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I think people forget about how much damage the pet does. If you don’t want a pet, roll a warrior. It’s the core mechanic of a Ranger. And if my bow doesn’t deal as much damage as a warrior’s it’s because I have a wolf gnawing on my target’s kitten Pick the right pet and you’re dealing extra bleeds or fear or poison or chill or…you get the idea. I agree with the OP, fix the core mechanic so its responsiveness makes things like Pink Moa’s F2 daze useful as an interupt.
Also, our spirits suck.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Plus, the little boons we get from traits for things like dodging, weapon swapping, pet swapping, etc are great. When I 1st started this game I was like “ok, who cares about 2s of protection with a dodge roll or 4s of swiftness with weapon swap?” Now I realize how great it is.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
The developers have already said there will be a Halloween event. Be patient…it’s the 9th
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I play Ranger and I swap a lot. Each set brings a different set of utilities and skills and it’s quite handy to be able to swap from say, a ranged attack (longbow) to something more helpful when getting mobbed up close (sword/axe). I find that swapping weapons is huge strength for all professions and, until you understand that, you’ll never unlock your full potential.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I didn’t rush to the end. My main is 50 and I have a ton of alts I just goof around with. I have fun. I’m anxious for 80 but don’t need it to feel fulfilled. In GW1, even after I’d done everything 100x, I still came back for holiday events and every expansion. I’d beat the game, level bring all 8 of my characters to the new content, unlock new skills (hint, hint), and just enjoy myself till I got bored. Then I’d wait till the next new content. No pressure with no fee.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I don’t think we need dedicated healers. We’re all given a dedicated healing skill + loads of other ways to evade, mitigate dmg, or boon ourselves/party. I think if Anet added just a little more to most professions’ ability to truly craft support builds, more people would be happy. But just like every class in other MMOs couldn’t do every role (mage can’t heal, shaman can’t tank), some professions are just better at support types . Warriors are great team buffers, Guardians are great protectors, Necros are great at combo fields, Eles can heal, etc. If the support aspects of some professions are improved upon, the whole “holy trinity” argument might vanish.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
It’s mostly because we aren’t forced to play together.
I’d have to say this. In GW1 we weren’t forced to play with other people, but we did need a full group of henchmen to survive. But henchmen were stupid so we opted for real people as often as possible. And forget doing most story missions with hench. Now however, we can quest completely alone and be ok.
I do like DEs though, because they are generally too hard for one person to complete on their own. It forces players to cooperate. I’ve gotten in the middle of DEs alone and have had to run away 1/2way thur until others come to help. I like that.
One down side of playing together but not in groups is that we don’t actually meet anyone. Sure, we kill things along side one another, but I don’t get to know you or add you to friends. Guilds or dungeon groups are the only way to do that.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I would say that this game favors movement not range or melee. If you learn to kite & gap-close, any class is effective. Ranged attacks seem easier to dodge than melee in PvP. Every melee profession has plenty of cripples & leaps to stay stuck to your target. Just like every range profession has slows & kiting skills to stay away.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Happened to me too, tho on a much lower scale. I was buying up super-cheap dye (60c and lower) and I realized I was spending 1s50c on dye that were listed as 39c on the search page. I was buying a lot so I was just clicking & going, but once I noticed it kitten off) I surfed the TP much more slowly.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Remember chest runs in FOW and the like? Yea, those chests needed keys which cost in-game money. And we bought them. Hundreds of them. Because chests had items of value in them.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I just unlocked Druid Spirit (Sylvari racial elite) and I love how it follows me around as a baseline function. This is how all Ranger spirits should act as baseline. In the place of the tier 3 trait, it should be something like “procs more often & has a wider range” cuz as it is, even traited spirits are really lacking. I was thinking up a full-support build yesterday & wished so hard I could go 3 spirits. But they’re just so weak.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Not exactly the same but..
My pet wasn’t on passive but I blew my horn for CotW. Nothing targeted, just the self boons….and my pet attacks the Moa standing nearby. As if my horn was sounding the war charge against a helpless, dopey looking 6ft bird.
So instead of my speed boost for travel, I got all buffed up to drop a Moa. (Woof…he was a scary Moa master..woof) Ugh, idiot.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Could we please have the ability to search for armor types in the TP? I hate picking ‘chest armor’ and having to wade thru the light & heavy armor when shopping for my Ranger. Thx
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Also, the dyes you get from the Green & Orange Dye kits are exclusive to those kits. You can’t get those particular shades/hues from in-game.
Could you source this please? Like screenshots or dye names or something?

[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Hey great tip. I’ve been wondering this myself. Thanks.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I think a lot of the complainers are comparing their experience to launch day, when all the starter zones were mobbed with players rolling fresh toons.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Iron looks like a dark blue on medium armor.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I just bought Druid Spirit and I’m not displeased with it, though I’m not sure its worth 30pts. I like that it follows me around (unlike Ranger spirits). Still, I think I prefer Entangle and Rampage As One.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
There’s a YouTube video showing what each race’s dance is. Sylvari is an Indian bali (sp?) dance.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Also, the dyes you get from the Green & Orange Dye kits are exclusive to those kits. You can’t get those particular shades/hues from in-game.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Is there a decent (& cheaper) alternative to Abyss or Black dye that looks better than the starter Ebony dye?
TIP: Tarnished Silver Dye is a nice cheaper alternative to White dye
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I’m still very interested in this game. My main is only 50, I’m having fun, and haven’t even dipped into WvW or dungeons yet. Every day I feel like I’m learning something new. And with Halloween right around the corner there should be more fun stuff on its way.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I realized a little late but thankfully not too late just how much of a gold sink crafting is. I’ve got like 30 levels in a few crafting professions on various characters and it got me nowhere. Now I sell all my mats and only use crafting for 8-slot bags for new toons. Currently at lvl 50 & have just over 3g. I have a stockpile of mats I’ll be offloading tonight that should net me a tidy sum.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I understand their explanation as they want Retaliation to be a situational counter (like blind) rather than a 100% uptime boon. I’m wondering if they’ll make Retaliation stronger (deal more dmg) if they reduce our ability to keep it up.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
It’s not that the GS is better. It’s that Anet just nerfed the SB into dust so the GS seems better.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I was wondering why I was dying more last night than I ever do. My SB+QZ has been my lifesaver, dropping mobs before they can drop me. But last night I was getting smoked and was forced to actually use sword/torch for better damage. Yes, my ranger was more effective at melee.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
yea, it’s def slower. It’s really noticeable during QZ…used to be a machine gun now…it’s just not. I’m using LB now.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
[quote=376068;Vince.7291
What i do know is that my only viable options for my Ranger is to go glass cannon, if i actually want to kill anyone in wvwvw, and also another thing i do know is the only viable weapons for the rangers are shortbow / longbow, the other are absolutely crap.
And also i do know that while it takes me a LOT of time to kill a player in wvwvw (impossible to kill thieves btw, they just vanish and run away…), a thief, or warrior absolutely destroy me when the second i fail kiting them.
So please don’t tell me that every profession feels under powered, because that is bullcrap![/quote]
So you melee classes kill you if you (in your words) fail at kiting. Sounds about right for every ranged class ever. And LB & SB are the only viable weapons? I guess you’re only talking about WvW huh? Cuz most of the other weapons are completely viable in PvE and dungeons.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Which Race & Gender look best with kits on their backs?
(From my limited observation, dainty female characters look awkward and so do all Sylvari)
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I think if one item is bound to you, so is the resultant item.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Used to buy salvage kit and mining pick… now they are worthless… except if you want a legendary…
Game will probably be dead before that…
WvWvW have instant queue…. no more overflow in LA… and im on one of the highest populated server…
Wait…you want a queue for WvW? You want overflow servers? I always though those things sucked. Huh…imagine my surprise.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
What GW1 did with dual-class makes comparing that game to GW2 very difficult. A lot of players are saying that GW2 is limited because you can’t do something that you could in GW1 as a dual-class. W/R that used pets were not rangers. Neither were touch rangers. They were in essence, necros with reduced casting costs.
I think this is one reason we feel limited when compared to GW1.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
That woulda been sick!
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Everyone forgets about pets. They deal a significant amount of damage once you have a few points traited into them. I have 15 pts in BM and when I deal 250-500dmg per shot from my LB, my cat is hitting for 700-800 per strike. I shoot faster than my pet strikes, but you can’t negate that huge chunk of dmg. Use your pets right and imo you’re deadlier than warriors.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Hounds of Balthazar are a human racial elite. Actually, all of the “summon an ally” elites are racial elites. So yuocan technically have a 2nd “pet” out if you use the racial elite. Also, hyena pet’s F2 skill is to howl to summon another hyena, so you can do that. Also, the collectors ed of the game unlocks a summon wolf elite.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Yea, spirits have ridiculously low HP and are succeptabile to AOE damage all the time since their range is dismal. Not to mention their effects are so random that they’re unreliable.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Yea man, I’d say Rangers can kite better than any profession.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
If you fully spec into them and stac +boon/healing/toughness gear they seem ok in spvp, but a little underwhelming.
So to make a spirit worth it (and we have a few) we have to fully spec for them? 30 points…and they’re still underwhelming? Yea that’s not gonna fly for me.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I’d like to see a save/load system for trait/skill builds. Of course, I’d also like to see the removal of re-trait costs.
I would love to revisit FOW and UW 250yrs later and see what’s happened. Even if the trip to FOW is me alone walking thru a field of daisies listening to a loving diety tell me how she reformed the land. I don’t care…I just wanna go back.
And are the Mursaat still around? I can’t remember.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Because Stealth only lasts a couple seconds and is the crux of a Thief. But, unlike WoW, they can’t drop into stealth and stay there, planning out an attack, etc. They use it mid-battle to drop threat (PvE) or for movement/dodging (PvP). There are counters to thieves: block/dodge/daze/heal thru their initial burst & then kill ‘em when they’re out of initiative (simplified).
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Well, you’re playing the easiest class (warrior) and are bored. But don’t want to micromanage or just don’t want to F1-F4 dance? Pretty much every other class is more exciting to play from what I hear. Warriors put up the big numbers but get boing eventually. Playing from 1-10 will give you an idea of how each class plays, but I’d also recommend taking any new character to the Heart of the Mists (PvP staging area). There, you’ll be auto-scaled to 80 and all of your skills are unlocked, giving you the opportunity to test out the playstyle against target dummies. It’s not the be-all-end-all for making a decision, but it certainly helps.
As for recommendations, try out Guardian. Another heavy armor melee class (no longbow/rifle sry) with some interesting boons/heals and the F1-F3 virtues generally aren’t used all that often. I also love Ranger: pets give you utility but you aren’t forced to F1-F4 dance.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Not to mention that at early stages your personal storyline has you constantly going back to your home city. And when you’re 2 zones away that’s forcing me to drop money or else run thru the Mist/LA/Grove-Portal game.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Holding CTRL will display all enemy nameplates. Then you can click on the one you want. Personally, I usually just tab thru targets till I hit the one I want if it’s too busy in the scrum.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Bear pet with Guard will draw aggro from allies
Horn’s CotW obviously
Pet howls (fern hound, jungle stalker, crimson moa)
Healing Spring + bow means range classes in the spring heal and all the melee allies next to your target gain regen too on your bow shot
Spirits are kinda lame atm, eventually we’re all hoping they’ll improve
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
This is what I’ve been doing lately to jazz up my ranger play while leveling.
1h Sword/Axe – Shortbow or GS, whichever you find to be a better 2ndary set. I rarely swap.
Healing Spring
Flame Trap
QZ
SoW or SoS
Entangle
Warthog (main) + Murrelow
Use flame trap early, your hog will charge in (leap) for a combo finisher fire aura. Whirling Def works great with Flame Trap too. Since you’re both melee, use your hog’s F2 (forage) skill. You’ll get a lot of sweet items that create combo fields. Remember, sword #2 is a leap finisher, axe #4 is a projectile, and axe #5 is a whirl finisher. These + Flame Trap, Healing Spring, Warthog’s foraged items, and Murrelow’s F2 poison field make group melee fighting a blast.
I took on endless respawning Ettins in a confined area using pet swap & QZ quickness to burn single targets when my combos were on CD.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I use a lot of them.
Melee only – Warthog/Pig + Jungle Stalker
Bows – Jungle Stalker + Crimson Moa (for groups), Cave Spider + Murrelow (solo)
Underwater – Shark + Armor Fish
That’s generally what I use. I love the Jungle Stalker. Its howl is awesome.
