The Gem Store: It has contaminated GW2

I think I understand where the OP is coming from actually, though I am not certain it is as simple as just blaming it on the gem store. I do feel that the reward structure for actually playing the game is lacking since there currently isn’t a single item in the game that can be gotten for completing some kind of challenging content. Everything is earned through rote repetition by farming for various currencies and very very rarely do you actually have something of immediate value drop for you from killing a particular monster, it makes for a shallow experience in my opinion. Think of how much better it would be if obtaining something like a legendary were tied to some sort of epic chain of quests that had a story or reason behind obtaining the item. As it stands now the only thing legendary about obtaining a legendary is your patience for farming or opening up your wallet. There are so many missed story telling opportunities that Anet could tie to some of the itemization they have put into the game. So while I recognize that Anet needs the gemstore to keep the lights on, I do think they need to have a serious look at how they are handling some of these things. Obviously these are just my opinions and I am sure for every person that agrees there will be at least that many that don’t.

What to level up next?

Well since you already have the masterclass to 80 (engi) you might as well just delete all your other toons and reroll more engies. I keed I keed, or do I? Seriously though, just play what you like… if you like having lots of skills to choose from then definitely roll an ele. If you want to be able to faceroll pve content while leveling, thief with sword pistol will get you to level 80 without ever having to dodge.

Commanders R Us

I just wished more people realized that having a commander tag does not make you a commander. I like the idea of having them be earned through some sort of task system as opposed to just being able to be bought. There are people who have tons of gold in this game but do not have the slightest clue on how to actually play since they spend all their time doing nothing but farming in a zerg. Then again, since GW2 is 90% farming related maybe it’s me that doesn’t know how to play since I refuse to farm…hmmm.

Your reflects are also rng based. But it’s like asking why is 4war1mes suboptimal since you have banners, timewarp, vuln, might, and fury. Engineer on paper dps and burst are cool, but it relies on bunker down, and in a speedrun you just don’t take something with good dps, you take the absolute best possible (=eles for now). That’s for speedruns though, not “casual” daily tours. For tours I still like having a guard for aegis when i don’t feel like dodging, and eles for dem pretty conjures. So, engi has a lot of things, but since they are not the best in it, taking more than 1 or 2 hinder their potential. 2 engis is already 25 vuln, about max. might depending on your utilities, 30-40% reflect uptime, and far enough stealth for any run section. Even 1 engi is already 25 vuln, 9-12 might, 20% reflect uptime, and stealth. So the problem is that 5 engis are only a bit more useful than a single one.

Pretty sure the OP is not trying to make a claim that this is going to break any speed run records, I get the feeling it’s more for just funzies and experimentation. There is plenty enough variety in engi builds and traits to make this worthwhile just to have something to tinker with.

RNG reflects, but with 5 engis the odds of not getting reflect wall is 3%. So it’s pretty close to being OK. I wouldn’t take bunker down at all because of the massive DPS loss. Ele FGS seems to be getting the nerf bat, so their dps will only be marginally better after the patch. The traditional engi vuln relies on grenades which are lower dps than bombs, so with 5 engis you can still cap vuln but with bombs, so you can utilize the engis “best” dps potential.

How many unique conditions will be applied with a 5x bomb setup to take advantage of modified ammo? In a normal rotation it’s really only going to be some bleed, vuln, and perhaps burning depending on how you decide to rotate the fire fields for blast finishes. Don’t get me wrong a 6% damage boost is nothing to sneeze at, I just think it’s going to take some maths to figure out if it’s worthwhile having at least one engi running nades to boost the amount of unique conditions that are on the target. Their personal dps is lowered some from bombs in this scenario, but it may be worth the party dps increase from having better access to more types of conditions.
Edit: It would probably be most effective to have one or two engis replace mine with gk, they can switch to gk just for applying the extra few conditions then switch right back into bombs and it wouldn’t require them to take grenadier since in this case the nades would only be used for applying the extra conditions.

Ready Up: Unrelenting AI-Love needs to end

Pets have been an integral part of MMOs for a very long time. Many players, including myself enjoy them greatly. They have been in the game and promoted since before release. It is not like they magically added them in out of no where after 2 years.

You are free to search out and move to a MMO that has no AI what so ever. Good luck.

Um….this is kind of a cop out. From a pvp perspective, no one likes being killed by 4-5 “robots.” Most people can accept being outplayed by a human, however, most people don’t like being killed by the human’s computerized henchmen.

It’s been my experience that people don’t like losing no matter what the reason is. If you take out AI then you need to take out, any kind of passives. Guardian regen? Yep gone. Signets? Yep gone. Traits that automatically do anything? Yep gone, and the list goes on and on. In fact I can’t think of a single game that does not have some form of passive play. Good luck finding one though, let me know how that turns out for you.

So I have to wonder what the logic is in hidding the buttons from new players… Either they can or can’t pvp until a certain level. it makes no sense to hide the shortcut buttons but still be able to enter via portals.

smh.

Just guessing, but the assumption is that without prior knowledge of these game modes most new players won’t poke around for them. It allows Anet the ability to offer a sense of “progression” for new players without actually locking anything away.

Rune of Strength vs Rune of Aristocracy

Seems like a lot of the runes and sigils were poorly thought out imo.

~snip~
In the case of strength vs. aristocracy though, there’s really no sensible reason I can’t think of as to why they don’t also have the on-struck ability for the 4-piece bonus. I think you can definitely chalk that one up to design oversight.

It’s because aristocracy has might on heal instead of might on being struck. It’s not a design oversight, it was intentionally done this way. Obviously that doesn’t balance the two different runesets in terms of might generation but I don’t think they are meant to be balanced that way. These two runesets are always the most effective if you have some other way to generate might ie strength sigil, blasts, traits etc etc. The bonus might generation the runes provide is meant to be just that, a bonus not the standalone method for generating might.

Can lvl2 enter PvP Lobby after patch?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

ShadowPuppet.3746

Yes, they can.

For example, WvW and PvP will be messaged to players via the level-up notification system at levels 18 and 22, and the buttons in the top left will be hidden until then, but experienced users can use the portals in Lion’s Arch or use hot keys to access those game modes immediately. Once the buttons are unlocked for one character on your account, they’ll be visible to all future characters as well.

So the buttons doesnt have to be unlocked for the new player to still be able to join PvP?
Is that how it works?

Yes, that is how I am reading it. It’s only the icons that are locked not the actual game mode.

That particular on-struck ability is not that powerful, but it is odd that it isn’t on the aristocracy runes when it’s on the strength runes. In fact, I can’t think of any reason why it’s not.

One could potentially make the argument that the on-heal might stacks given by the aristocracy runes is so powerful that the runes of strength need both the on-struck might stacks as well as the +5% damage boost (which was previously +7%). However, I find that to be a weak argument as the +5% damage boost is exceptionally strong already, and most players will not simply waste their heal skill to get some extra might if they’re not hurt. Most heal skills can’t take full advantage of the 10s ICD anyways.

I guess the next time they do a rune/sigil balance pass they might add this onto them.

Yeah, it’s super effective on an engi that uses medkit and takes enhanced performance though.

that there would be an engi who gimps himself by not taking incendiary powder instead >.>

You can still get incendiary powder if you run 6 in explosives and are not using nades, then you are stuck with the choice of reducing the firearms line or the tools line. But it still works well even without enhanced performance if you are not willing to short yourself in one of those lines.

They just need to offer up ways to get skins that are not related to the tp and all would be well. I can’t think of a more mind numbing and boring task than repetitively farming to get the things I want. It creates a disconnect as to why you have the items and wastes a lot of potential “story telling” opportunities. How much better would it be if getting a legendary was tied to something more than a persons legendary patience for farming? I realize that game devs need to have some easily repeatable tasks in a game to get things since they can’t possibly create enough actual content to keep people occupied indefinitely, but it really should never be the bulk of what a game is about.

A serious concern about PS changes

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ShadowPuppet.3746

ShadowPuppet.3746

After reading the recent blog post I have some serious concerns about your wording about the changes to the personal story, below is the paragraph in question and i have bolded the section I am concerned about:

As another addition with the level-up guide, we’re updating the personal story steps using our new Story Journal so they come in story chunks that unlock all at once per chapter. When a story chapter is unlocked as a level-up reward, you’ll be able to play straight through the entire chapter from start to finish and not have any awkward starts and stops that throw off the storyline. In this way, story chapters become another big moment to look forward to earning and unlocking as your character levels up.

Now my question to you is such, how exactly will unlocking the personal story in chunks remove all the “awkward starts and stops that throw off the storyline” that apparently exist now? Will this system not just move all these starts and stops together and make them an EVEN MORE glaring problem? It seems more like this is just your excuse you are using to close up the hole that is key farming…

Obviously I am just guessing, but I read that to mean that they will adjust the experience gain so that you can get enough experience to play through a chunk at a time without having to do anything else. As it currently stands you can not level enough to just follow the story from say 1-10 without having to stop the story line to go do something else like hearts or events (as a solo player at least).

I wasn’t justifying failing the event. We completed the event 98% of the time all day yesterday. Those that complained were free to leave. If you complete the event you have 20 minutes until respawn. In that time there was 100% farming uptime with trio, quaggan and regular champtrain.

So then I am not sure what the issue here is, if you were successfully completing the event and the timer for successfully completing the event is not changed then it really does not impact you.

It does affect me because an ANET employee said in this very thread that they’re looking to “fix” the event. Basically, they are trying to “fix” an event that is being completed legitimately. WUT?

Obviously I don’t know for sure what they meant by fix, but if I had to guess and if they follow the pattern they did with Blix it will only be fixing the failure timer. You have to understand that while you may be in groups that are completing the event not all maps are functioning this way.

Never did the blix farm but was wondering why was it nerfed? was it blocking progess for peoples story line? or because the event failing was more rewarding to farmers then succeeding and they was giving grief to players for completing the event?

If it was the second then surely they need to take a look at respawn timers for failing on all events and adjust them otherwise the problem is just going to continue to move from event to event until they are all adjusted

I think they just need to change event rewards to be like in dry top (reward chest upon completion), but that would contain the champ boxes for the amount of champions you have killed (or a set amount).
I’d rather see event rewards than champ farming rewards because it actually rewards you for playing the game.

Yep, and it is probably the “easiest” solution available.

I cannot stress this enough. There are tons of us that are organized and dedicated to running this daily for several hours a day and doing it right. We run the event, stack up, gets tons of loot and have tons of fun. We complete the event if even one person needs the achievement. If you’re there for LS, you’ll get that too whether it fails or succeeds.

The difference here is this:
If you fail the event the respawn timer is 5 minutes.
If you complete the event the respawn timer is 20 minutes.

When you complete the event you have 20 minutes. So what happens is is that someone tags up and runs champtrain on Drake, Wurm and Troll. We wait for Quaggan Queen and Trio to pop. We do those while we wait for Coil to respawn. Once it respawns, we head there, complete it and repeat.

I absolutely do not see the issue here, other than ANET using the complaints of toxicity in those few maps as an excuse to justify them fixing the event so that we aren’t too lucrative because, again, they want you to struggle for loot so you eventually cave and buy gems.

If all they do is make the failure timer equal to or more than the success timer then you don’t lose out on anything if you are completing the event successfully beyond the ability to intentionally fail and farm the event. I am not trying to start an argument but I am not sure how you can try to justify that failing an event should ever be more profitable than succeeding an event. Does Anet really need to look at the way they are handling the loot system? Of that there can be no doubt, so why not try to spend the time pushing for positive changes to come into the game instead of arguing to try and keep a system that is obviously horribly flawed in it’s current form.

Yeah, intentionally failing an event is entirely different from failing an event because you didn’t have enough people or were not able to fulfill the requirements of the event unintentionally. Of course events have failure outcomes because it is supposed to be a possibility to fail, but it was never intended for people to intentionally fail. Anet does need a serious overhaul to the way people go about getting their shinies or else this type of skritt for brains behavior will continue (this is meant to be humorous so don’t rage).

I’m with you on this OP. I recently remade my engineer from charr to asura just because I couldn’t stand doing jumping puzzles on the charr, I was at least able to recoup my runes/sigils and reuse my trinkets and rifle since they are ascended. Also needed to spend a few hours farming transmute charges to make sure I had enough to get the looks I wanted. All in all it wasn’t terrible, but I certainly would be in favor of being able to purchase a race change. As a side note the story is only tied to your characters race for part of it, at a certain point everyone has the same exact story so I am sure they could figure out a way to make it happen.

Like dungeon armor is tied to doing dungeons, ascended armor is tied to crafting, and so on. None of these are wrong. Saying that cultural armor just not be tied to just purchasing with gold would be no different than me saying that dungeon armor should not be tied to do just dungeons (pvp rewards excluded).

Getting 120 gold is fairly easy if you’re willing to put the effort and time to do so. If you don’t have the time then all that means is that it will take a little longer. Tier 3 cultural is supposed to be a gold sink and something for people to work towards if that’s the look that they want. Not everything in the game should be made easy to get which would be the case if you tied it to map completion.

Not sure if this directly addressed to me or not but I am going to assume it is since I mentioned something about map completion. So it’s clear, I don’t think it needs to be changed… I am just pointing out that there is really only one way to get money reliably and that is to farm for it. As an aside, there is literally not much easier to do than farming in this game, it simply requires patience for repetition and time invested (which for some people time to be able to play is very limited). If it were up to me, I would lock all of the “cool” looking skins behind challenging content versus easily repeatable tasks or at the very least have them tied to a set of heroic “quests” to obtain them. If you can’t tell I am very anti-farming, not because it’s too hard but because it’s quite literally the most mind numbing task I can think of to spend my time in a video game (obviously this is just my opinion and I do not expect others to feel similarly).

You can make 10 gold in a matter of hours. Spread that across 12 days and how much gold do you have? How about 5 gold per day over 24 days?

Only by farming, either through dungeons or open world pve. Just running through doing some map completion or the occasional dungeon you won’t get near that amount. I did not say you can’t make money, it’s just tied into a specific aspect of game play.

This is a quit-worthy disaster if it’s not limited to pre-80s.

over-dramatize much? According to these forums, everything is a quit-worthy disaster. If they DIDN’T make this change someone would call it a quit-worthy disaster.

It’s really not that big of a deal.

Look at it this way, A guardian has less of a chance of getting silk…but you have MORE of a chance of getting DUSK!

Plus, if this is like any of their other drop changes (remember the patch that stated “significantly increased drop rates of ascended armor boxes in FOTM”)…then you won’t notice the change at all.

People panic and threaten to quit if an ANET employee stubs their toe around here.

“The said “Ouch.” you know what that means….their killing off all the warriors in the game and converting them to necros."
"no, you fool, everyone knows that “OUCH” stands for “Operates Under Cattle Hooves” so everyone is going to be turned into a cow."
“If that happens I’m going to quit.”
“I’m quitting also until a dev comes on here and explains what exactly they meant by “Ouch.”

Problem is, the most content that they’ve released fills no purpose. EotM is 24/7 karmatrain at best and Southsun Cove is as redundant as any other PvE map.

And thats the reason why an expansion with 20 maps will also change nothing.
People consume them in 20 hours .. and then say : Give us something new ..

The problem is that many players including me don’t want a level cap with a
new gear grind .. however exactly that is what makes people play all the new maps
in other MMOs with every single character .. because the NEED to do all the quests
there to get to the next level cap .. and then to gear up again.

Here we can say : oh .. those maps are boring and redundant .. because there is no
need to play them .. and even with a new level cap we can still level to 90 or whatever
in Queensdale thanks to the mentoring system.

you ever play guild wars 1? ffxi? both maintained one level cap throughout at least 3 expansions/campaigns.

What makes people do the content? interesting new things to do in interetsing areas, with interesting rewards.

It has been done, it can be done again. If anet is wondering how, they can PM me, i will give them free ideas.

GW1 was NO MMO. FFXwhatever .. asian grinder ?

Played Lineage 2, EQ2, AoC, RoM, Aion, LotRO, RIFT, Champions Online.
EQ2 the longest for over 4,5 years and through 4 expansions.

For the “interesting” things .. yeah didn’t they tried that in Dry Top with the insects ?
I’m still unsure if it makes more people happy or unhappy to implement more of these
RNG type things to force people to play specific content (aka making it “interesting”)

Mostly in the end you look if there is a better farming area in the new zones of the
expansion, and if there is one people change their prefered location to that map.

Oh .. or what also has been done a lot is implement faction grind in every new zone
so you can grind 20 dailies for different factions each day.

ffxwhatever as you call it, would probably not fall into the asian grinder category. it had one level cap, and most gear was obtained with less repetion than gw2 currently has, more focused on actually doing specific events/content.

regardless, point is, its not really leveling or statistically more powerful gear that has to drive people to go into new areas.

you dont have to use intense rng to make people play an area.

lets say you made a canthan expansion, with new canthan weapons, new canthan armors, and expanded home instance/guildhall system, new skills/new traits, new weapon skill animations, dungeons, special events. All of these things being in that area is what would drive people to go there. you dont need low drop rate items, or higher level stuff, you just need new interesting things. People who like a game are looking for new reasons to keep playing it, and experience a different flavor.

and, did you play gw1? the only thing not mmo like about it, was that you didnt have a persistent world. The quest systems, item distribution/skills aquisistion/progression would have fit perfectly into a persistent world had they chosen that path.

Oh how I do miss the rare monster camping from ffxi… I absolutely hated it at the time , but now find myself wishing for it in other games I played. For all it’s faults, ffxi was actually a pretty fantastic game in terms of complexity and how you went about actually getting certain items of prestige through the use of long epic quest chains that often could not be completed solo. A bit on the fence about the xp grinding parties though since I don’t have nearly the time to devote to games that I used to and the idea of having to wait for a party to level up makes me cringe now, though I will say it truly felt like a mmorpg since kitten near everything you could do in that game required having a party to do it.

~snip~

Usually when I’m doing group pve content like that I just opt for modified amunition just to be safe.

Same for me, that is part of my criticism of the trait. To be fair it’s mostly just because I want it to be more reliable to use in all situations because I really like having all the booms going off heh. If they just increased the trigger detection radius even a tiny bit I would find myself using it more since I don’t do much WvW these days.

Now we just need Mesmers to start dressing like Agents in the Matrix, at least then you can play out a movie scene in your head while you flee for your life. /endsarcasm

Is anything being done about conditions?

The problem isn’t even limited to the stacking problem.

Even solo, a condition player can do a maximum of ~8500dps. This is assuming 100% uptime of all conditions and 100% uptime of might and 25 sigil stacks.

A power build (Warrior, ele, guard, thief, ranger) can reach 11k dps with a standard rotation. (engineer mesmer and power necros top out at around 9500dps).

Just curious how you arrived at the dps numbers for the classes.

Are you saying that low level players in WvW SHOULD have all their stats set to 3000 and be able to kill an entire lvl 80 zerg?

Just to be clear it wasn’t 3000, it was 2500 and if one upleveled player even with those stats can wipe an entire zerg then that zerg is doing it wrong. Having said this, yeah it was a needed fix, but please let’s try to avoid the hype train.

That isn’t what I’m saying at all. The point is that it should adjust based on the toon’s REAL level, not ADJUSTED level. So my level 80 should always get the +40 the same as if he used equivelent lvl 80 food. If a toon is upleveled (such as in WvW) they should only get the stat boosts appropriate to their REAL level (for example, lvl 42 toon’s upleveled should still only get the +24 to stats).

I agree that this is how it should work, the only reason I can see them being standoffish about that is to try and prevent people who are already 80 becoming even more powerful for things like lower level dungeons. Not saying that is a particularly good reason or that it is their reason, but it is a possibility.

Mob stunning players ruin all MMORPGs

Personally for me I don’t mind having to sometimes actually pay attention to the path I take through a zone, so much of this game allows you to sleepwalk through it already. As an aside the zones are simply not big enough to support a mount that allows you to skip past mobs without fear of being attacked. The only reason the game world feels as large as it does is because of the relative speed in which you can move through them. If you truly are having such a difficult time figuring out how to get around being stunned or cc’d in some way I would suggest the issue is more with you than with the game design. I don’t mean that to be snarky, it’s just that every class has ways of dealing with that issue, it just simply requires you to be at your keyboard.

Suggestion to hide costume shoulders

Not a perfect solution obviously but you could always look for a shoulder piece from another armor set that will look good with your armor and is not so bulky. I think hiding the shoulders wouldn’t be a bad thing but it’s not likely to be a top priority so it’s the best near term solution I can think of to offer.

Unfortunately, this is for a complete costume so you can’t change anything out.

Oh, my mistake I did not realize they made it that way. That is way not cool on Anet’s part.

It is very effective in PvP and WvW. I remember dueling a number of people and having them comment how much my mines hurt!

Certainly not disputing that they hit incredibly hard, especially when paired with throw mine on a zerker sd burst build (this one never ceases to be fun to play as a ganker in WvW). The reason I am surprised that they work as well as they do in a pvp scenario is that I can’t believe more people don’t try to actively avoid them lol. The problem I run into is mostly pve related and even then it’s more so when doing group stuff like in dungeons or in certain open world events where it’s difficult to tell at times your exact distance from a boss because of all the effects on the ground ( not to mention it could move in an entirely different direction than you want it to because the aggro tables are so wonky). If you can get something to chase you in a straight line/can predict it’s movement or can manage to find the sweet spot on stationary targets they are great, otherwise they can be a real pita to use.

I actually use bunker down with my build and it works pretty well (for me, at least).

Here’s a link to my build:

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fdAQFAUlUUpWr9dx6KseNydBNqmA6DEgML6C+jcA-TxRBABdcBAKT5Hi6AIa/hGVCOq6PA8AACAgAczbGAG6QH6QH6Q7m38mDdoDtMA5bB-e

It works really well with berserker armor, too, and I know flamethrower isn’t the most amazing kit to most players, but I’ve been using this for a while now and have had a lot of fun in wvw, tpvp, and pve with it.

(Although when I go in dungeons I tend to switch out rocket boots for either elixir U, elixir S, or throw mine.)

With the gear I have now the mines hit about 1k damage, and I’m pretty sure that’s on crits, but it’s still pretty nice. ^^

I have had better luck with it in pvp settings than pve surprisingly. It seems that in pve unless you can really get something to chase you the detonation trigger radius makes it incredibly difficult to use in many situations. That’s not to say that it is a worthless trait or anything, it’s just that in most situations I have found, modified ammo is the more reliable trait to take in that slot (at least if you are doing any kind of grouping). I would really like to see some math posted about how many of the bunker down bombs you would need to have land to surpass the damage bonus of modified ammo in a group setting. The problem of course being actually testing it in practical scenarios since it’s easy to test on a training dummy or like what the op’s video showed.

Which Has to Move Less?

Although that really only applies if you are fighting one thing at a time, for most open world pve a drake would probably be a better choice since it’s “tanky” enough and has a cleave attack that will possibly keep multiple mobs off of you. You can always build for condition damage build that allows you to stack toughness to help soak some damage, it won’t be optimal if there is a group of players around during an event but you will definitely be more difficult to kill. There are a few events though as I said in your last post that pretty much require you to move no matter how much toughness you are rocking, they are by no means required to do them so you can always just figure out which those are and avoid them if you like.

I really want to like this trait, I just find it far too finicky in most situations unfortunately. In a scenario like this obviously it works well but for general play it just doesn’t seem to hold up well in my opinion.

major trait events delayed indefinitely?

It’s a poor choice for Anet to lock a trait behind, most people will prefer the defense of Arah because the loot gain is much better (10 minutes of waves of enemies) than the capture event. That said, you could always do the defense event and gain enough stuff to sell to simply outright purchase the trait from the class trainer.

Maybe try asking for money up front? I know it may be a hard sell, since most people are not in a habit of handing over cash for services before the service is rendered (real or virtual currency), but I really can’t think of any other solution to the problem that is currently available. Unfortunately some people just behave poorly when they are behind the anonymity of their computer screens and no game designer can possibly forsee all the ways people can and will choose to be donkies.

Step 4: Recruit more lowbies to come join in on the gank train.
