So I updated my PC to an i5 4460 with 16gigs of ram. I have a Samsung 830ssd. It takes roughly 30-40 seconds to reach the character select screen from windows. (longer than with my old Amd ponies) During this time my PC appears to be idle. Once I reach character select I can load LA & Mists etc very quickly & the game runs nice ..

What could it be?

Ok, mixing a little hearsay, some datamining, the initial HoT video, and some patterns we’ve seen in skills already in the game here’s my bets for Druid. 90% of which will be wrong .

Staff

  • 900 range auto attack. Probably not a 1-2-3 chain skill.
  • One defense-for-self button. Maybe a wall of vines that absorbs projectiles for 3-4 seconds.
  • One PBAoE group buff. Probably vigor, possibly fury
  • One ground targets “burst of growth” attack, likely with cripple, possibly bleed (thorns)
  • One vine attack using the same wide-line attack shape as the Revenant’s ‘road’ cast, likely with a cripple effect. Possibly knockdown.

Glyphs
Variable effects based on the family of the pet you have out. Probably some overlap so each glyph has 3-4 modes total (much like Elementalist Glyphs key to current attunement)

  • Obligatory healing glyph with pet family-themed secondary buff. Bear-heal!! (bear adds protection, birds add swiftness, pigs add a condition cleanse, etc.)
  • Glyph adding additional effect to your next 5 attacks. Effect set by current pet’s family (spiders poison, birds blind, felines bleed, drakes burn, etc.)
  • Glyph for rezing downed-but-not-dead allies. Ally recovers with added bnefit based on pet family.
  • Glyph applying a large buff to your pet and a small buff to you depending on pet family.
  • Condi-cleanse glyph with small AoE buff to you and allies based on pet family.
  • Elite glyph summoning “Primal Pet” matching the family of your current pet. The One True Bear!

Traits

  • A glyph trait that adds the effects of both your pets (out and stored) to your glyphs + 20% cooldown.

Pretty grim, I sincerely hope you are wrong.

For the beta? Not a chance. I highly doubt druid will be close to being ready in time for release, but that won’t stop them from tossing it in the game in whatever sorry state it is in.

Are you sure? What if they just say “sorry guys it’s not ready, keep playing regular ranger for a few more weeks”.

It is to my knowledge that traps may not be as good for pvp, since u can no longer throw them, meaning u need target to move at your feet.
After the june revamp patch the traditional longbow ranger has more variants and is quite a strong contender. Both LB/GS and LB/sword&dagger are viable options on a marauder amu (SPvP) or full zerker in WvW or with mix of either Knights/valk.
Traits makes much more sense now and it is harder to go with something that is “wrong”. Just read through em. Personally I love Beastly Warden which works great on bird pets and open up a new mechanic you havent seen before.

Trap ranger is one of the strongest, if not the strongest pvp ranger spec right now. You may not throw them anymore, but at least they do real dmg now.

Do frost spirit buffs still stack if one person is using a traited spirit and the other isn’t?

This did work at one time and allow both rangers to run spirits but I haven’t checked since the patch and trait changes. 9/10 i’m the only ranger in a party anyway.

If you play zerker I wouldn’t take sun spirit, it’s just not worth it, the cooldown on the effect is just too long and rangers should always take frost spirit unless there is more than one of them in a group.

Great SB PvE build?

SB is not a PvE weapon period.

Literally worse than your pet as a weapon.

Would not recommend using it… Its just a bad weapon in general… extremely rare cases to even see one in sPvP..

Yeah it’s super bad in spvp too, since the nerf to spirits.

Hi!

It’s not consistent but if I’m in combat for long enough while frequently swapping weapons (often already after the 1st swap) legendary auras no longer appear.

One example: slot 1: sunrise slot2: Bolt+Frostfang. After a few -in combat-weaponswaps neither of the legendaries will display their default auras.

Great SB PvE build?

Since the buffs to Longbow SB is just useless in any form of pve. (you can not even justify ranging something with it in fractals)

I mostly use the shortbow on condition builds – it’s not awesome for that but seemed the most appropriate swap for axe/torch as a main weapon set. Has a good cripple on it and the bleeds stack up a fair bit if someone else has the target distracted (don’t try forcing this in dungeons, your party may not be happy).

I’m not sure it synergizes well with berserker gear though. Longbow deals enough DPS that it’s hard to top.

Having A/T as both weapons sets is just superior dps. I would love to use my dreamer too, but it’s just not viable.

I’m not saying that Icebow makes a Huge difference while you are actually killing things in a dungeon, but it does when you are trying to use the lfg tool as a non meta class. If eles did not have icebow perhaps that would introduce a little bit more class diversity there ..

Eles as a whole are ridiculously OP right now in all game modes. Icebow is only part of the problem, but it’s really annoying.

Dagger is mainly useful if you play spvp with a condi build. Other than that I have a dagger with energy sigil that I use on Mai Trin, SE path1 end boss & that’s pretty much it.

I believe the Royal Terrace Pass is only available during Wintersday event in December. I remember waiting and waiting to get mine last year since it is only available once a year (so far).

90% of the rangers are bothered by it. There is some vocal minority that loves it and there are lots of others that dropped the ranger because of it.

About 50% love it and 50% hate it.

See? I can pull percentages out of dark smelly places too.

Besides your hyperbole, there are other much better reasons to drop the Ranger… IMO, #1 being that other classes do everything it can a lot better, which is why I dropped it in favor of Ele and Thief. Maybe one day Anet will woo me back, but I doubt any time soon, even with the Druid elite.

50/50 sounds equally hyperbolic. :-) , perhaps it’s true for pvp, oh wait the majority of ppl writing into this sub are also pvpers… :O
Random numbers aside, the moment arena net makes genuinely difficult content where you have to reflex dodge 1 shotting attacks frequently the sword will stop seeing play altogether (in pve). I’m not quite as concerned about this as before, seeing as now we have lots of options, including but not limited to the sinister build in fractals, or the S/A+GS remorseless build. (which relies on the sword much less & you have the option to time your weapon swaps to match certain boss patterns)

The DPS given for condition builds is usually the steady state damage after it’s completely ramped up. For most (short) fights you’ll never get to that point, so is not really an accurate measure for comparison.

This is untrue for the most part. People will often look at the prettiest number and repeat it, like you see people quoting Engi’s 21k dps which is only achievable at like 45-60s, at 30s you’re at like 19.4k if I’m remembering the people who did the math correctly.

Most of the regular maths people for GW2 have a standard of “30s fights”, you go to the Heart of the Mists and record a 30s fight, then you write down all the abilities used (video used to prove it’s possible and not just theoretical, so aftercasts don’t screw up what you thought would work and all). Then you do the math. This is why again for the case of Engi it’s quoted as “Condi Engi will outdps a Power Engi after 14seconds”, because it takes 14s to have that slower ramp up balance out.

So people aren’t looking at the max rolling dps, but they are factoring that ramp up into a 30s fight, or at least the regular math people are (all the DnT people using the magnificent Dekeyz’ spreadsheet for example).

You’d still only be getting 5% additional duration to your burn, +20% to your splitblade/sharpened edges bleeds is far better.

You can’t compare percentages of different things like that. You need to apply it to the base durations before comparing. In other words, how many seconds does it increase the burn, vs. how many seconds does it increase the bleed. (Then you need to multiply that by the burn DPS or bleed DPS.)

I think you have it wrong, he’s not talking about damage or dps or duration of individual abilities, he’s simply talking about your condition duration “stat”. With Balth runes you’re at 55% burning. You add 40% food you’re at 95%, add a toxic tuning crystal and you’re at 105% and 5% over the cap. Drop to normal tuning crystal and 36% food you’re sitting at 91% and you’d not want to grab a 20% burning wasting 11% of it.

However go with the Nightmare rune combo or 4X + 2X trapper you’re going to be at 25% to everything. With 40% food that’s 65% to everything, with 10% tuning, 75% to everything, leaving you 25% to work with and I’d think either smoldering or agony (or malice) would be solid (unless I’m missing something).

So if you go Balth you grab Agony for sure. If you go with the nightmare combos, then you should be able to go either way.

And I do want to say I totally agree with the rest of your post, there is value in damage over duration even if it doesn’t win out in the long run, many fights aren’t anything you could call long and having a bit more oomph to start isn’t bad even if it’s not huge, which is why I prefer the 5 Nightmare + Antitoxen/Chrysblahblah Jewel over the 4X Nightmare + 2X Trapper option.

Scales, bottom is w/ 36% food and normal tuning crystal, top is 40% food with 10% tuning crystal

  • Balth+Agony: 91-100% burning, 56-70% bleeding
  • Balth + Smolder: 100% burning, 36-50% bleeding
  • 4X Night 2X Trap + Agony: 61-75% Burning, 81-95% bleeding
  • 4X night 2X Trap + Smolder: 81-95% burning, 61-75% bleeding
  • 4X night 2X Trap + Malice: 71-85% burning, 71-85% bleeding
  • 5X Night 1X Antitox + Agony: 51-65% burning, 71-85% bleeding
  • 5X Night 1X Antitox +Smolder: 71-85% burning, 51-65% bleeding
  • 5X Night 1X Antitox +Malice: 61-75% burning, 61-75% bleeding

“With Balth runes you’re at 55% burning” My Balth runes must be some budget versions, because I only get 45% burning with the full set. With the 36% food & no tryhard crystal (dungeon potion, or skale venom) I’m at 81% & because of that I very strongly feel that the extra 19% from smoldering is worth it. I had 9800+ burn ticks in fractals yesterday..

Condi duration caps at 100%. Certain traits can bypass the condi cap. Trapper’s expertise is actually one of them, but sharpened edges is far more damage which is why it gets taken in this build.

So let’s assume that I’m using the 36% duration budget pizza & don’t use the tryhard crystal with balthazar runes, then agony + smoldering is the best combo, because that way only 1% burning duration is wasted, yes?

The burning is already +95% duration without a sigil, so you may as well have sigils to buff the bleeding and apply more.

I’m referring to the one with Agony/Earth or Geo/Balthazar runes.

Okay but why? The majority of the dps comes from burning, why not buff that any more? Wouldn’t this be the best way to max sustained dps, or is there a hardcap on duration?

The remorseless build that is using S/A+GS is a good build. It does identical damage to LB+S/A predators build. If you don’t believe me, because of things that Pernix said/calculated just install the Janx(legit) dps meter & test it yourself. (in solo testing it will do a bit more dmg, but you gotta calc in the additional vuln stacks)

In the zerk condi comparison why wouldn’t you start with path of scar then weapon swap. While Rapid fire does have better dps trigger quick draw for rf is better than triggering it for path of scar or am I missing something.

You need to give time for your ele(s) to freeze your boss target. (otherwise they’ll get mad and “kitten ranger be gone xxx voted to kick yyy”)

Druid will be a shape shifter. There will be no pet. It has been foretold!

Bull. The druid in the announcement trailer had an alpine wolf with him, and “shapeshifter” is too WoW for Anet to go for. Besides, Tyrian druids are plant mages, not animal mages.

That means nothing! If they wanted to resolve this: Druid starts in normal humanoid(charroid) form with a pet & then uses a druid f[x] skill & they will fuse with each other, the pet out before the transformation determines the form & the skills on staff are all supporty things that can be cast pre fight. Also about the pet related traits they could just add a line to every single one of them starting with “while shapeshifted”. One can only hope, probably the posters above me are right & I’ll be disappointed :-P

I really hate facing mesmers in spvp, because targeting is kind okittenward in gw2 to begin with & the there is this class that keeps going into stealth while spawns two dozen clones, it’s just not fun to play against.

In GW1, our PvP builds had certain things and the trends were quite common, these are the ones I used all the time there.

We have nothing like these builds here and those traits would help us get back to a good place imo, toolbox and utility, pressure etc. All with good evasion and mobility. Sigh.

The Magebane build would be better off going R/Mo like most/every other build, and you don’t have the GvG version of Melandru’s Shot, only the HA version

I agree with the point of your thread by the way.

The people that disagree with the thread seem to only evaluate ranger at the level of damage dealing. Their brain goes. “Ranger… Does damage. They do damage well enough. Don’t really know what the pet does but it has to help, and the damage is fine. No changes needed.”

They never stop to think that pure damage with inferior mobility and inferior in every way team utiility is a poor place for a class to be in, because they never get passed the damage part of the thought process and don’t care to educate themselves to form an unbiased opinion.

I don’t think the players that commented on ranger being fine are actual ranger players, rather mesmers or eles that farm us in spvp. Let’s be serious here since the patch a full zerker power ranger cannot even kill a full zerker anything before it blows up, or at least very rarely. Rapid fire seems to do way less damage than before. Mobility is fine on power rangers, double swoop is yummy & you can even go all the way & play marauder melee ranger with sword/x + GS, it doesn’t get any more mobile than that. Conditions ranger is an other story, it’s bad in team fights as expected & it should be really good in 1v1s, but unfortunately it has so many bad 1v1 matchups now & combine that with limited mobility that I just don’t think it’s viable at all. Maybe I’m not skilled enough, but when I lose to rampage warriors (let’s not even talk about elementalists) on S/A+A/T ranger I die a little inside :-)

In Pve we need some serious changes to bring the class in line with warriors, eles & I suspect the OP is a pve player just like me and I really like his suggestions for that reason..

Hornet Sting/Monarch's Leap Change

Dunno if this has been suggested before, but here it goes:

I propose axing the stabbing animation on Hornet Sting (renaming the skill to Hornet’s Defense or something appropriate) and merging the associated damage into Monarch’s Leap.

Why: If I want that evade, I want it NOW, not .5s later. I can’t really count on Serpent’s Strike due to the length of CD.

Other benefits: It also improves sword mobility. I mean, I find that people with swiftness can still outrun you even if you use HS+turn around+ML, assuming you don’t have swiftness yourself. This also gives sword some burst aside from pairing it with offhand axe. I think this will also offer some counter-play and even improve skill ceiling. The evade serves as a tell for ML, but you can HS, then attempt to bait out your target’s dodge, and finally hit ’em hard with the improved ML.

Potential downside: The improved ML will probably make GS look worse, but that’s a separate topic altogether.

Thoughts?

I agree that the delay on the evade is annoying, but taking away the backward leap would be a mistake, this is where ranger mobility comes from in multiple game modes.

Given the model’s scaling, it would be a tiny blaster. But pretty much all tonics that don’t root your movement can equip the blaster….. but most won’t allow you to use it due to skill locking.

I don’t care about how the blaster looks on it, I just want to know if it works. (it does on most tonics, but not all)

Under the perfect circumstances, Remorseless is able to compete with Predator’s Onslaught with a difference of .7% damage. However, this circumstance isn’t able to be achieved causing the amount of damage to be a difference of 10-15% damage difference, making Remorseless roughly 46,500-48,500 total damage in 60 seconds. Until Remorseless is reworked, the trait is only viable if there is constant fury being given from outside sources.

You seem to be disregarding the party wide dps boost gained from the extra vuln stacks. Also the “perfect situation” is not that hard to come by. One ele blasting his lava font & either no deep freeze, or a fast deep freeze pretty much does it. (assuming you are in a somewhat organized group) If your ele knows ranger mechanics he can just blast fury whenever vuln drops below 22-23 to make things even more effective.

I’m aware of the amount of vulnerbility we can apply, although that shouldn’t really be worried about due so how much vulnerbility can be sustained from other classes through traitlines. If you have an Engi in the group, they themself can maintain max vulnerbility by just spamming grenade kit. In an organized group, yes, this trait can be more worthwhile because of the fury being given from outside sources. Although, I don’t expect much players to know Ranger mechanics due to lack of experience or ignorance. Not calling it out for the entire Ele community, but most I have pugged with just stay in fire for staff and place icebow down. Definitely seeing more Eles learning the benefit of stacking might, but a Warrior with Phalanx Strength will tend to make the Ele not worry about might stacking so no source of fury from them. :/

Usually having engi+ranger is a no go, but ranger too can do 25 stacks of vuln if the eles are helping. Also there is something else too, usually eles use glyph of storms to achive high amount of vuln stacks at the start of the fight, but if you have a remorseless ranger, they can use the glyph in fire attunement for some substantial extra burn dmg.(assuming 0 +condi dmg gear ofc)

Personally I think both builds deserve to be considered meta ranger builds. (the remorseless build still needs 2 upvotes on metabattle: http://metabattle.com/wiki/Special:Rating?name=Build:Ranger_-_S/A_GS_Quick_Draw)

What is your test mob? I am assuming unbreakable golem?

You do realize remorseless is burst oriented vs extended dps right?
(meaning it will be better towards shorter encounters)

Lastly, what weapon and skills are you using? the only time Opening strike should be consumed is for maul, path of scars and swoop.

If it is a target golem(industructable)your testing on, I can upload a sloppy 60.31k in 30 seconds of remorseless build damage with Valkyrie/scholar . If not please let know which mob your doing your trails on and i’ll match your tests with my own gear setups for science.

I am kinda skeptical of your numbers… its very easy to do a single maul for half your total dps rotation(30sec).

change those now crappy ranger runes for rage runes with remorseless and done not just burst anymore pop rapid fire and watch the fireshow

Rune of rage is pretty weak. " 25% chance when struck to gain fury for 15 seconds. (Cooldown: 30s)" This is the only thing on it that affects opening strikes, but not only does it have a 30s icd, it also only has a 25% change to trigger while struck, you gotta ask yourself how often do you get struck in a bossfight?

Rangers that take the game & their class seriously & have not yet moved on to an other class (ele, warrior)? Not that many. I mean, to take the kind of abuse we take requires a special kind of stubborn person.

I’d like ranger spec that gets banners & has similar bonuses like current warriors banners (str & disc) I wouldn’t mind if we needed to actually fight with one picked up.
