edit: Ohhhhhhhhhhhh, BOUND! I didn’t even think of this. What equipment you using too? I have one more achievement to get there and would like to try solo to improve my game.
I gotta go to work so I’ll make it quick, but full marauder, except for the trinkets (2 valk + zerk, the rest zerk). See the post above for the traits / skills. Grandmaster 3 in Critical Strikes may help surviving as well (steal life on crit), but that’s a small DPS loss.
Well there are like 2 or 3 Vets, they’re not an issue… As for the harpies, if you see they’re evading, pick up the pustule while they’re dancing in the air.
And for more survivability, I’ve used Withdraw traited to remove conditions (for the poison), and Omnomberry Ghost. As always when I don’t need to steal boons, I’ve also used the trait that triggers Haste on steal, plus the trait that reduces the recharge for Tricks, for more spiking (Weakening Charge is better when you have Quickness).
Again, it takes 2 Vaults…
I did it several times (for the achievements) on my Staff Daredevil too and that was a piece of cake. Only the Destroyer of Hope is a bit of a pain. For the rest, make sure the mobs are grouped, and Bound+Vault onto them: they die in 2 hits and you have perma-evade… Only 2 things did put me in danger: the AoE at the end if I’m out of endurance (or more accurately if I’m not reactive enough when I must use Signet of Agility to refill it) and picking the pustules when there’s a bad spawn and the trash mobs attack me (maybe I should kill them first since it literally takes 1 second and a half).
Long story short: if you play a thief, use a weapon with a better AoE (staff), don’t go full berserker if you’re not a pro player (use marauder) and learn to dodge.
About Nevermore ans some undocumented changes :https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Nevermore-Bug-so-dangerous/first#post6337599
It’s not a bug.
Nevermore now summons ghostly ravens on crit (just like the sharks with the legendary spear – don’t make me spell its name
).
It’s funny because I was just about to post about it in the feedback thread. People had been complaining about the lack of special effects with the new legendaries (starting with Nevermore), including, but not limited to, the short ghostly trail left behind when running. I, among others, had objected that was the very reason I had crafted this weapon (I find most of the other legendaries too flashy). IMHO, Anet has found the perfect middle ground between the particles-lovers and the particles-haters: they’ve added something for the eyes, but not too flashy as the 1st gen footpaths.
Now, of course, if you play as I do a DD with 90% crit chance and easy access to quickness, that’s A LOT of ravens, but it’s nothing compared to some of the 1st gen legendaries effects.
PS: while we’re talking about undocumented changes: is the fractal 3-like piranha effect new when you make a target bleed (not sure if that’s the reason) with the legendary spear? I don’t use it that often, and it’s the first time I notice.
This is a bigger issue in pvp modes. I die several times a day to invalid path sw2, infArrow, shadow return, obstructed steal or no line of sight shadow step etc…
Well I also kill several people a day, because they think I will get the error message if I try to steal (in my case) them where they are (hello rangers at refuge in WvW
).
Wishing we could pay for a DLC that makes all the actual gem store items (or at least most) available in game…
Amen. Or a campaign / expac based game like GW1.
Thieves: very enjoyable and satisfying in pvp, you will suffer hell in pve. Perfect if you want to pvp. Very high single target dps, requires brain input.
They have one of the highest DPS in PVE (and possibly the highest against moving targets).
That being said, don’t try to go full zerk unless you’re a super pro player: use marauder armour instead (if you’ve specced in CS, it’s just a 4% DPS loss). The lack of AoE till you can use a staff can be a bit annoying against trash mobs, but Dagger / x and Pistol / Pistol can be pretty cool, even when leveling. And if you still have trouble surviving, you can take life stealing skills / trait / food (Signet of Malice / Invigorating Precision / Omnomberry Ghosts) that will pretty much provide all the healing you may ever need.
But as said earlier, everyone has a playstyle that suits him best. In my case, I find every class but thieves boring (except maybe elementalists and mesmers, despite the very low DPS in PvE).
anet removing good things
will this help the game??This will help WvW but will hurt all the PvE players who used WvW for quick crafting so we could return to PvE in the same place we left it.
Exactly……WVW is for WVW players, not a “quick crafting” stop for PVE players.
So basically, not having the 2 or 3 players we used to see around the crafting stations is gonna fix the queue issue? How exactly?
Hello everyone,
Many of you have been inquiring as to why we made the decision to remove the crafting stations in WvW. We made this decision because we have been seeing an increase in queue times with world linking. Upon observation we found there have been players taking up space in the maps who are only crafting and not participating with their teams. However, we’ve been listening to your feedback today and we wanted to let you know that we will be adding a banker to each team starting area in EB, Alpine and Desert. Thank you for the continued feedback!
Since there were no more than 2 or 3 players at a time around the crafting stations, how punishing the majority of the players is gonna fix the queue issue?
So wait… after all WvW has been through… you quit over crafting stations? ok.
Also that list makes it look like you use to go to wvw for crafting and spent the rest of your time in wvw doing that, while in scenario two since they weren’t there you logged.
You realize on your daily routine which required you to move around maps anyways, you could just go to rata sum and do your craft dailies(also rata sum home instance is pretty good), then hop into wvw?
It’s not about WvW. It’s about how everything in this game is made deliberately frustrating in order to sell gemstore items. This is just the straw that broke the camels back.
And just a few more things:
- I have never said I was quitting the game, just that I am kittened (and logged out for today).
- Yes, there are crafting stations in cities. There are also 25 uses salvage kits, or limited uses gathering tools, yet no one uses them.
- Yes there were PvEers going to WvW to craft, but how many people did you use to see around the crafting stations? 2? 3?
- Don’t assume things you don’t know: yes, I’m spending 80% of my time in WvW – where did I say I was spending it sitting at the WP?
This was actually a QoL nerf for me – I used the banks a lot and actually crafted stuff. Last time I tried to create 200 feasts and couldn’t get the ingredients on the TP, so I asked my server if they would help me and they did.
I do get the argument that “PvE players could just afk there” but honestly; there were maybe 3 at the crafting stations at any time. And I often jumped into a fight when I switched stuff between my characters because someone called it out on map chat.
I totally agree.
My typical GW2 day:
- Grab the daily stuff in my home instance
- Do the skritt queen / quartz farm
- Harvest passion flowers
- Go to WvW
- Do my daily crafts
- Spend the rest of the time in WvW
Today:
- I logged in
- I grabbed the daily stuff in my home
- I farmed quartz
- I harvested passion flowers
- I went to WvW
- Titan was under attack, I went to defend it
- I ran back to the crafting stations – they weren’t there anymore
- I logged out
Oh let me guess – crafting stations will be available in the Gem store soon.
That was my first thought as well: they wanna sell airship passes.
It’s stupid but it made me lose the little faith I had left in the company. I so miss the good ole GW1 days…
EDIT – I REALLY hope it’s a bug.
Who bets there will be a discount on airship passes next week?
The biggest thing would be overhead names. I want larger health bars colored to aggression and more options to alter the bars. I don’t really need to see everyone’s guild and mastery level. Even no names with aggression health bars would be nice.
Finding some way to move the quest and party areas down to the bottom of the screen would be nice too.
I kinda agree, and especially for allies. I would love an option to have their health bar only showing up when they’re wounded (without the name / completion star / etc). Of course, you could still pop the stuff we have now by holding the alt key.
Purchasable DLC would go against a core design of their business model, B2P. Buy once, own forever (unless you are a jerk and get yourself banned, of course). There was plenty of furor over their even daring to make a paid expansion, and a super long thread of people complaining that “I bought this game three years ago so I shouldn’t have to pay for the expansion.”
Well… There are also many players coming from GW1 who loved the business model (extension / campaign based) and who have really mixed feelings (to be polite) about the gemstore… And in the meantime, the forum is swarmed with people begging for more items to buy for real money who would refuse to pay $30 for an expac (at least that’s what they say, because we all know they will buy the next one
).
The bottom line is… You can’t please everyone. And I’m not sure trying to find some sort of middle ground as Anet does can work. At the end of the day, it’s their choice, not mine or anyone’s on the forum.
To be fair, time-gating charged crystals wasn’t necessary at all since you can barely harvest enough each day to make one (you get 10 crystals from the queen, 6 to 9 from regular nodes, and an extra 3 with a rare chance of getting 5 more from your home instance).
Zoom in, you’ll feel like you’re running faster…
Now, Anet, can we please have that -1 button? :P
hi im a new player returning, my playstyle consists entirely of obsidian sanctum camping/dueling and roaming. after being away for 2 years, i cant find any action nor guilds in this playstyle. so is there any place/guild/server i can still find people who duel and roam? thanks
Well, it’s tough with the current blobish state of WvW. I also focus on roaming / dueling, but the numerical advantage (or disadvantage) makes it hard during the prime hours. It’s ok on the afternoon though, and great late at night (at least on EU servers).
I strongly recommend the BL for that.
Roaming: go to your opponents’ BL and start doing a camp run (including Titan). Try not to be too obvious when you cap though or a mini-blob with wait for you in the next camp. If the BL is kinda empty (late at night), you can even solo towers.
Dueling: I generally stay in my server’s BL. Late at night, I defend the southern camps on my own. I wait at Briar so I can quickly reach Refuge and Lodge when they’re contested (there are always solo or duo roamers trying to cap them) – of course, I can also cap camps or towers if needed.
During the day, before the prime time, there are too many people on the map to do that efficiently so I wait at Bay and fight anyone who comes around (or try to take refuge). The southern area around Bay is probably the most active place.
I do use dual pistol in WvW as well, but not as my main weapon set – I would really feel like a one trick pony. It works wonderfully against certain classes such as other thieves or elementalists (depending on their build), but it’s completely useless against others: any class that can stack reflect, or anything that comes with tons of minions (some necros, illusion / clone spam mesmers) since the minions are going to take the hits.
Keep also in mind P/P is much more than Unload spam: #5 is a good defensive skill and an easy access to stealth if you use Bound, and #2 and #4 can change the course of a fight.
I wouldn’t recommend going full berserker either, but that’s another topic.
Maybe you’re just trying too hard…
I mean… You know, it’s like the last time I was showing someone how to Withdraw forward (by turning the camera backwards – I don’t use extra shortkeys): I’m so used to that trick my fingers move on their own and I perform it without thinking about it. But that time, I was trying to do it knowingly, and failed repetitively (that was pathetic
).
Elections all over the world? Isn’t normal that every year there are elections across the world? What makes this year different?
America?
Upcoming elections:
Argentina: 2019
Bolivia: 2019
Bermuda: 2017
Brazil: 2018
Canada: 2019
Chile: 2017
Colombia: 2018
Costa Rica: 2018
Dominican Republic: 2016 <- look, here’s one!
Ecuador: 2017

Uruguay: 2019
Venezuela: 2018
Nope, I guess “America” isn’t what makes it special…
I haven’t tried with daggers, but Weakening Charge + Steal works just fine.
Are guild missions still supported?
You can still do those missions, if there are bugs, they will be fixed, therefore yes they are still supported.
Now if you’re asking for new missions, it’s another story…
The good news is the Monkey King stance is already implemented IG: you can see it for a short time when you start walking crippled. The bad news is we’ve been begging for this change since the launch of HoT, and we’re still waiting for it to happen.
Well karma will hit you back if you send salty PMs anyways. The last 2 guys I had really trouble with both sent me angry PMs at some point (the fights were unusually long, and they did reset them several times), and both died 10 sec later. Go figure.
I would like to see PPK changed to points-per-finisher. That would force a choice between a safe kill vs a risky stomp with points on top.
I would also like to see Borderlands Bloodlust increased to upto 3 points. Currently the Bloodlust is largely ignored on enemy borderlands.
I don’t get it. Why do you care? Does it matter if you’re killed by a stomp or by regular damage?
I use whatever seems to be the fastest way to finish my opponent. If I’m up against a bunker, I’m likely to stomp him. If I’ve downed a thief or a necro, I’m likely to use regular damage, since it’s fast and they can cancel your stomp with fear or teleportation. Why should it matter?
Maybe or they could just show actual character names like a regular PvP game.
Generic anonymous names :
- Do not prevent salt whispers (we can see names in sPvP, the Esport mode of all things)
- Do not prevent players from being focused or otherwise hunted
- Stifle community building (enemy players are fellow gamers too)
I love grudges but… I think I would do the opposite. Indeed, the current system doesn’t prevent angry PMs, but I would remove the ability to add an enemy to his friend list for that purpose.
You get tons of negativity when you roam solo and are not too bad at what you’re doing (killing, namely) – salty PMs are the most common form. I would do something about it.
Aye, please, change it, especially for the Charr.
Despite being a day 1 GW1 player, I only joined GW2 when it became FTP. I have never had any issue with what the OP is describing (the hero challenge must have been a bug, and having to wait till level 10 and 35 I believe to enter DR and LA respectively doesn’t bother me that much), yet I found several other aspects of the game really frustrating for FTP accounts. Nothing big, it’s just a series of small limitations that, put together, start getting really annoying (the list is on the wiki). And I must confess I bought the game out of frustration, rather than enjoyment, which is kinda sad. I don’t regret it though: unlike many people on the forum, I’ve really enjoyed the expansion.
But the thing is… I think it’s just a matter of phrasing. If Anet had called it a Demo instead of a FTP game, my experience would have been completely different. I wouldn’t have expected much from it, and would have been pleased to see what may be the most complete demo ever released. But since it was called a FTP game, I was expecting much more, and was disappointed.
Words matter, and I’m not sure Anet has picked the right ones to describe Core Tyria. At least they haven’t for me.
Just a few word to say if I haven’t replied since the OP, I’m still reading this topic with interest. Changing the weapon sets I use is out of question though: I’m not gonna go D/P just because I have an issue with one guy .
@ saerni: yep, good advice. I have misused the stolen skill, and that’s something I should have done better, definitively. I often use Pistol #2 as well, but I expect that second guy to have been really experienced as a thief: he could recognize every skill animation and react accordingly, which made him a real pita to fight (again, to beat him, I had to start faking attacks to caught him off-guard at some point with a simple AA + basilisk venom, followed by a burst).
Yep, Monkey King. People have been asking for a change since the launch of HoT, but I doubt it will ever happen.
Probably what they’re gonna do with the new elite specs:
- Will they let us equip a new type of weapon again? I somehow don’t want every profession to be able to use everything…
- (Biggest fear) Will they nerf the current elites, since they’re so good, to force us to play the new ones?
- (Minor but real) Will they use new elite icons again on the players’ nameplates? Whilst it shouldn’t be an issue for the vets, it’s gonna confuse the new players even more (they would have to learn to identify 27 icons – sic – just to know their opponent’s class in PvP/WvW).
- Probably more…
My engineer is useless now, 100% useless in pvp and wvw. Why is this ok?
Because it’s YOUR engineer.
Ah, that must be it, thanks for clarifying.
I can’t post a screen right now, but there is definitely a bug with the racial collections (I don’t know about the Emperor’s). I generally go and buy some medium cultural armor in WvW when the Big Spender daily is up, and even though I have the skin unlocked, some (but not all) T1 medium chests do not count for the achievement.
We’re talking about DPS, not just Power
Right, which is why I used “effective power” which takes into account crit (try changing the crit values in the effective power calculator I linked). Since damage is based linearly on effective power, a percentage increase/decrease in effective power equates to the same percentage change in DPS.
Don’t misunderstand me though, I’d love to be proved wrong
OK, my bad.
I guess the difference in therms of DPS then comes from your build, and from how many Marauder pieces you were talking about (I wasn’t counting the trinkets).
I’ve done the same with another build similar to what I run, and here are the results:
Build:
4921 vs 4737 = + 3.8% in therms of DPS.
The DPS to survivability trade-off you get is fantastic – you can increase your health by over 50% for roughly a 3% DPS loss.
This sounds fantastic so I tried to qualify it and I was unable to do so. I’m no theorycrafting expert, but I took the the build from dulfy and modified it to use some Marauder and compared the stats. According to this comparison the effective power went from 4891 to 4587 for a 6% decrease while the effective health went from 13,361 to 19,270 for a 44% increase. While that’s still not a terrible tradeoff IMO, it’s not quite the 3% decrease for 50% increase you mentioned. Is there something I’m doing wrong in these calculations? Thanks!
We’re talking about DPS, not just Power. I did the math a while back and in terms of DPS, the difference was about 4% between full zerk equipment, and marauder armor + weapon and zerk trinkets (I guess Ensign was only talking about the armor when he was saying 3%).
DPS = ( crit % * base damage * crit damage % ) + ( ( 1- crit % ) * base damage )
Marauder equipment has indeed less Power (and Ferocity), but it has more Precision, which partially makes it up for the loss. In terms of burst damage (which doesn’t matter in PvE), zerk equipment is much better though.
(edited by Sir Mad.1092)
I very much prefer Marauder gear due to the fact that you actually get very solid Precision -> Critical Hit Chance of it. Besides, if you play your Thief right, you shouldn’t need much more than 17K Health. Even 14K is enough for most of what you’ll face in WvW.
My goal in WvW is to have enough HP to survive Basilisk Venom followed by a burst from another thief. My base HP is a bit under 16k, and it’s perfectly fine, except the very first day after the reset (aka before you get WvW HP buffs), unless I go full Vitality food and oil (which I do). A thief with full berserker / food / omni-infusion could probably still kill me in 2 seconds, but that’s pretty much it. 14k sounds too low for me, at least the first few days after the reset.
I wasn’t expecting to post such a topic one since I’m doing pretty well against every other classes (or at least I know my and their weaknesses) and because rangers are generally really bad in WvW and often mean “free kill”, but I came across 2 specific guys last few days I could hardly handle.
I play a Bound dodger Staff / double Pistols thief. The 2 guys had one thing in common: I could have ignored them – they wouldn’t have been able to kill me. Unfortunately, I couldn’t let them cap all our camps either, and since the BL update, the level on our server (and probably every server) has dropped drastically so I had to do the job myself (most of the players rather follow the zerg).
Guy 1: trap ranger wit trapper runes. His traps were easily avoided, and really, he couldn’t kill me. But I couldn’t kill him either. Too much stealth (yea, I know… it’s coming from a thief…), and a bunker build.
Guy 2: power longbow build with traps. That guy was different. He was pretty good. Going melee was hard due to the traps, and LB #3 + timed dodges made him almost impossible to kill. Since I couldn’t let him raid our camps, I decided to go P/P and hassle him, and the fight lasted 10 mins or so. He knew how to dodge my telegraphed attacks (Unload, Vault), so I had to outsmart him at some point and fake attacks till I could finally hit him with Basilisk Venom and finish him (I’m skipping the part where he sent me rude / racist PMs right before that
). Still, that was probably the longest fight I’ve ever had, and I can’t help but thinking I could have made it easier.
Any advices from fellow thieves? How do you deal with that kind of guys? I have no issue with stealth classes in general and win the majority of my fights against other thieves (D/D or D/P). But stealth + long range + bunkerish build (at least for the 1st guy) – I’m not sure how to handle it.
You type them… Sorry if the answer is dumb, but that’s how it is.
If you use an English keyboard and don’t have accent marks, you can 1) paste and copy the character from the internet (or from a font viewer) or 2) install a keyboard layout for a foreign language that uses the accent marks you’re looking for.
EDIT – To make it easy…

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying the AP system is working as intended.
If we agree that AP should reflect what you have achieved, then dailies should have never counted in the first place.
You’re right about the retired achievements, but how many AP would that be (honest question)? Can it even compare to the 15k (almost 5 years) from the dailies?
But really, I’m not trying to argue as I also believe the system is flawed to begin with. I just think none of the “fixes” I could imagine (remove the cap / take away the AP from the dailies / whatever) would do more good than bad.
It’s not my fault that other folks haven’t been playing as long as I have. I’m still going to do the dailies because it’s something to do with my husband and it’s an extra 2g, but I’d like to get the AP from that too.
I think you’ve nailed it here. However, it’s not their fault either.
When you make a MMO, you want to reward old players, but you also don’t want to make it impossible for new players to reach the oldies level. Without that cap, it would be impossible. Also, keep in mind a new player will have to do his dailies for the next 5 years to reach the limit…
That being said, I understand the cap may seem frustrating, and I agree it may be a poor or lazy way of fixing a potential gap between newbies and oldies due to otherwise infinite AP, but heck, if you have a better idea, shout.
Check Aether, and we’ll talk…
The sad thing is yes, people are very ignorant of how the thief is to be played (hence why we still get rage pm’s for ganking and running out of fights) but we can’t really change that view. What we CAN do is limit the powercreep from HoT by nerfing everything from it that is overperforming. But even if all that is done people will still complain about thief because #blamethethief is still a thing.
Ragers gonna rage… I run a Bound Staff / Double Pistol build (so stealth is really costly and I can hardly reset fights without Dash / SB) and I also get angry PM sometimes… The average level in WvW has sunk since the last updates (alpine BL and server merges) and half of the people don’t even know how to counter Vault (dudes, just move!) or Unload (sic). But they sure know how to complain about it.
I was wondering why this was not in the “Thief” section. Note to myself: this is NOT about the guild called “Teef”.
since i can’t even complete an adventure on silver, what makes anet devs think a kittenty casual like me that barely knows how to play will get raid mastery points.
They don’t. It may be shocking, but I have to tell you the truth: you, sir, are not a master.
Seriously, some of those adventures are so easy (Salvage Pit and motorcycle-thingy above the P.A.C.T. camp, I’m looking at you) it’s almost impossible not to get silver for those… But I guess only getting bronze should be some sort of mastery. I mean… you have to try really hard not to score higher.
Bunny Killer, for my staff thief.
