Hey guys,

I’m not the typical “spokesdev” around the forums, so I won’t be able to give you all the answers you are looking for about what’s next, but I’ll clarify a couple of points:

  • The “usual suspects” who you would typically get answers from on this front have unquestionably been super busy getting the game out in China. A number of our devs were in China for the launch this past week, so I imagine that in addition to the hard work they put in over there to get the game launched, they’ll be returning home, getting over jet lag and catching their breath. I hope you can all understand that, and we appreciate your continued patience. We’re all as excited to share with you what’s coming next, as you are to hear it.
  • There has been, and continues to be ongoing development on projects outside of China, with the team hard at work on Living World Season 2. I can’t say anything more than that yet, other than to reiterate that we’re excited to be able to share more info on it when the time comes.
  • Come and check out the Festival of the Four Winds on Tuesday! Even if you experienced it back in July, we had a small-ish team revitalizing it to celebrate the China release, and there will be new things to do and see. :-)

But… where is Cantha?

The Trading Post is a tool. In that respect it makes the game better (it’s like asking if using a nailgun is a blessing over using a big rock to hammer things together).

But.. but…, the nailgun is killing the real fun of hammering nails. And since I’m working so much more efficiently, I have too much time on my hands. The main appeal of hammering nails was the experience of pounding them into wooden boards. The nailgun creates an imbalance in fun when it negatively affects the use of the big rock to hit nails. This becomes a P2W issue, since not everyone can afford the nailgun.

If you were truly hardcore, you’d use your forehead.

Why can’t I just Casually enjoy hammering nails?

I want to Pass EXP gain to my alts

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Smooth Penguin.5294

Smooth Penguin.5294

I would so like a way to level up my alts by playing the characters I enjoy the most.

I want to get my Ele to level 80 and play it at full effect.

But I simply enjoy playing on my already established 80s, more than I do leveling my Ele.

Some classes and play styles I simple enjoy more. I enjoy the look and feel of playing my heavy armored Warrior/Guardian

and I enjoy the playstyle of my Engineer

And I enjoy the Weapon + Healing Magic hybrid nature of my Ranger.

But the other classes I simply havnt been able to get into like that.

My Ele is in the 50s, but I can never seen to make time for him, because I rather have some fun on my 80s and do some Meta Events, and WvW type stuff, or simply roleplay and chill out in the 80s zones with the scary monsters everywhere.

I cant justify enough to give up that time, to play the boring leveling game just so I can unlock the fun of yet another alt class once it each higher levels.

I wouldnt mind giving my alt all the exp I gain on my 80s, that I gain from continued play. Because the Skill Points gained on my 80s dont mean much to me now. I rather my alt get all that exp to level with.

I simply want to play the characters and classes that I want to play, in order to level my alts.

Does anybody else see my view of this issue?

I see that your account only has 838 hours across all characters. The problem here is that you’re a Casual player. If you focused more time into the game, then you’d have more time to have fun.

That said, there already exists a way for you to level your Alts without ever having to touch them. If you play SPvP, one of the rewards you get is a Tome of Knowledge, which lets you instantly level up any character. I think I have over 80 of these in my Bank, so I could make a new toon, and be at end game within seconds.

Bloodtide map bugged in Megaserver

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Smooth Penguin.5294

Smooth Penguin.5294

The maximum amount of players per map seems to vary greatly with different instances of the Megaserver map in Bloodtide. On one run last week, we counted about 170 players in our group for the Great Wurm. On a run the other day, we could barely get 115 to 120 players in. I assumed that there could be AFKers or other people/guilds on the same map, so before the event started, some of us went to different areas on the map to scout. We ran into the occasional AFKer here and there (maybe 6 total), but nowhere near the 50 player difference from past runs.

In addition to that, the Crimson Wurm bugged out, and one of our groups was able to burn the final 25% of his HP in Phase 1 in a few seconds. This resulted in a failed event, as the other two groups weren’t ready to decap their Wurms. Not sure if this scaling bug is related to the map cap bug we encountered, or if this is a result of the Mesmer Feedback bug.

Anyone who says the TP is a curse is either jealous of people who are successful because of it, or is upset that they don’t know how to use it properly. I’m certain that 100% of the player base has touched the TP, and benefited from it during the life of their account.

It’s good it’s just mismanaged a bit.

Don’t blame me when people are willing to pay outrageous prices for my items. Although Evon could make it better by giving tax breaks to the players who use it the most.

This conversation was over before it began. Because you did not understand the terms of the User Agreement, does not justify you the right to use a copyrighted name in game. You even posted the exact part of the rules you broke (which I highlighted in the previous post).

I’m sorry you suffered due to your lack of understanding. Please realize that rules are rules, and any type of misspelling or alternate spelling of a copyrighted name will result in a rename and/or suspension (if multiple infractions happen). and they dont really have higher risk/reward.
if someone manufactured, or bought the precursors at 500-700 gold and sell to buy order for 1050, they make 392-192 gold per sale or 78% -27% profit. even spending some money to raise the price, if they got 10-20 precursors to sell you are still looking at 50-15% profits per transaction. That is on par with many other TP profits.

thats comparable to many peoples best hustles.

You could spin your data even more by saying that if someone purchased Dusk for 25 Gold two years ago, and sold it recently for 1200 Gold, they just made 4,700% profit (not including TP tax). But if I used more current data, I could show you that a little while ago, I could buy Spark for 1100 Gold, but now no one is willing to pay over 1k for it.

Luxury item speculating will always have higher risk.

Smooth Penguin.5294

Because Teq and THW are not “meta” bosses. They are World bosses meant to purposely be difficult to beat with an inexperienced group, and impossible to beat with a lack of numbers. Scaling down the event will not be done. Nor should it be done.

Being a challenge for experienced players is a must in this game. Dumb it down too much and it becomes boring. If they removed the predictability of Teq’s attacks, it would still be challenging. If you want a low-count boss to fight, there are plenty available. Teq and THW should remain untouched aside from bug fixes, like Teq chain burning glitch (which Anet claimed to fix, it’s not), and the spontaneous and random descaling of THW (which Anet claimed to fix, it’s not).

I agree with you completely on the first portion (difficult, if not impossible, to beat with an inexperienced group), but I disagree on the second portion (you must have X players to participate). The fundamental challenges of the Teq/Wurm encounter lie in the coordination and everybody performing their roles correctly. Beyond that, it’s just a matter of the Megaboss having insanely scaled up health and overleveled adds.

I think it’s frankly quite telling that the difference between “skin of your teeth” kills and “we killed Teq/Wurm with minutes to spare!” is always down to “did we spam Embers/Whistles/Mortars/Turrets?” That tells me that it’s basically just down to extra DPS, not out of any particular skill or effort from players. What’s the challenge in an encounter that’s made much easier just because lots of players spammed potions/summons?

A challenging boss fight should fail because the players screwed up somewhere (didn’t defend Turrets properly, did not properly coordinate the decapitations at the same time), not because you had X less people than the map cap or because people didn’t bring enough potions.

I’m guessing you don’t kill the Wurm often. You can have all the Fire Eles Powers and Ogre Whistles you want, but if one person isn’t in the correct position, it can ruin the whole run. So if 149+ players in the map all know what to do, all it takes is a single pug not following directions to pull the Wurm Head the wrong way, and you get an epic fail.

To sum it up, you need to DPS properly. Big difference from just having DPS.

The way these two bosses are right now have no place in the game imo. Asking a lot of times random people in the zone (not all of which are fighting the bosses mind you) to be able to cooperate and all know the strategy perfectly is a bit too much. It’s almost impossible for people who play solo or in a small group to defeat these bosses unless they get super lucky and land on a great overflow. The way things are right now is not fair at all. What I suggest is that there would be some kind of queue for these bosses and you get a daily try (or can just earn the reward once a day as it is now). Of course, level 80s only and possibly some kind of weapon/armor requirement. Finally, before you all jump at me and say that I’m just a casual, I want to remind you that you can only contribute so much to these bossfights on your own or with a 5-man party. Also, I’m not asking for any kind of nerfs to them, I just want the boss fights to be more organised since they do require a significant amount of organisation themselves. A lot of people, including myself, have long since stopped trying to defeat them as it has little to no point.
Of course, you can think of other ways to fix them but please take some measures!

TTS kills Teq and the Wurm multiple times daily. If you really want to get a feel for the action, you’re free to join in with us. With over 300 TTS guildies in TS and countless Pugs each time we go, we usually run multiple maps. I think we had 5 Teq maps running the other day. The most Wurm maps I’ve seen is 3.

Otherwise, I’m sorry to say, these events aren’t for you Casual players. This is only for the highly organized groups. You need strategy and coordination to win. Random pugs getting together without a plan or voice coms is a guaranteed fail.

With the rewards that players can get from actually playing the game, having all that extra would be too much. Even if 5 Silver per AP seems like a small amount, that adds up quick. Then the people who are Casual and can’t keep up will be left further behind as inflation picks up speed.

Quite honestly, there are probably people with larger bank account than number of people with 20k AP * 1000 gold.

There are probably too few people with 20k ap to make a difference. I think reward such as a gift of people’s choice or precursor for legendary won’t be a terrible idea.

I wonder how long it’ll take to get even 1k people with 20k ap.

But I’m not sure if Anet even want those people to play that much. Those people are wasting all the bandwidth.

I wonder how much it cost for Anet to upkeep the bandwidth etc.

Well the point of my argument was not just having that much free Gold given out would be bad for the game. It was more along the lines of how it would affect the playing style of certain people. There would be too much negative impact on the game. Imagine how many complaints about not getting enough AP would fill the forums.

So people are now complaining to anet why they cant afford a luxury item.

Why not complain to your government why you can’t afford to buy a helicopter?

When it comes to “Entitlement”, anything can turn into a legitimate complaint.

Except when you buy a game there is some legitimate entitlement to actually experience the entire game. MMOs break that mold a bit, but it’s not entirely unexpected.

Real cash has traded hands, and although the EULA gives no guarantees of any sort, it should not be surprising that Customers perceive a diminished sense of fairness when aspects of the game are out of reach.

Using lame RL “entitlement” arguments just shows your lack of understanding of the situation. But if it makes you happy tossing out catchy slogans and sharp comments, knock yourself out — don’t expect a pat on the back tho.

Real cash transactions after the initial purchase of the game are not required. One can enjoy this game without ever having to spend a cent beyond that. I choose to support Anet by spending money beyond the box. Where is the sense of “fairness” to players like me who spend lots of money on microtransactions, and players who want everything for free or easy don’t spend anything?

That is where the “Entitlement” comes in. I fully understand the situation. Perhaps the lack of understanding comes from your end?

dont get how you are connecting money spent in the gem store to any of these issues, their are plenty of people who spent money in the gem store and have no precursors, and plenty of people who may be upset with large inflation.

not to mention as people said, everyone here bought the game, every one feels entitled to get some enjoyment. I mean you could say people who go to six flags and complain about crappy food, or long lines are entitled, but they payed for it, i think they have a right to complain. One could say they earned it.

That post was purely in response to the quoted player.

I do agree that everyone is entitled to some enjoyment, and that everyone is entitled to complaining as well. I can understand if someone complains if their personal preferences aren’t met. To that end, I’ll argue against making game wide changes due to same personal preferences that the complainers pass as fictitious game wide problems.

so you think rewarding 5 silver per ap is too much reward?

This is where the psychology of marketing comes into play. 5 Silver per AP doesn’t seem like much, but when you multiple it up with a large amount, the end result appears to be more desirable. What sounds better to you:

1) Free 5 Silver per AP
2) Free 1,000 Gold when you reach 20,000 AP

Majority of players will automatically focus on the large number, because of the desire to have it. Just as how consumers focus on the lower number when it comes to sales (i.e. $19.99 sounds a lot better than $20, or three payments of $19.99 sounds a lot better than $60).

Back to your question (sorry for a long post for a short question). Yes, 5 Silver per AP is too much of a reward. Current trend is about 91 Copper per AP when you hit 20k (182 Gold). That doesn’t include the 1,600 free Gems bonus. That alone is enough as a reward. Adding an extra 1k Gold to that is overkill.

Who in the right mind will farm 20,000 AP just for 1000 gold. Those people farm AP because they like farming AP, or they just happened to get AP because they do their daily.

There are many. The same amount would come to the forums to complain that there isn’t enough opportunities to get AP should that happen. Of course there’s no way to prove this hypothetical situation, since Anet would never implement it. I’m basing this on my first hand understandings of how a lot of people view and react to high end rewards.

Yes you have said this before but you still haven’t told me why they would feel so or how it is like putting blinders on a race horse.
I never talked about advertising gold?
Earning gold is not the only way to succeed in guild wars 2, playing the game and having fun are more important in my opinion. And nobody forces you to get Arenanet points, that’s just your decision.

I’ll try to explain By listing a reward of 1k Gold for hitting the 20k AP tier, that is a way of “advertising” free Gold from the game. In the minds of players, they will have tunnel vision on this wealth. These players will only focus on that single goal as a way of getting money in this game. The psychology of this is that their behaviors will be dictated by the need to obtain wealth. The game turns from being fun and entertaining, to becoming a chore (although it has for some).

-Gotta log in everyday to get AP. If you miss one day, that will have a negative impact on your play style
-Can’t waste time farming, unless it’s somehow tied to getting AP (i.e. 1k monster kill achievements
-Can’t deviate from AP hunting, so players won’t have time to help others… unless it’s in line with getting AP for themselves. This leads to a less social MMO game, and turns into a single player mindset.
-Game goes down due to maintenance is like the world ending. Forums will be filled with complaints that the “Casual” players’ time is being lost because they can’t log in.

Granted, not all players think like this. But Anet knows well that if you put a highly desirable carrot on a far away stick, players will focus on it to try and get it as fast as possible. A mild example of this are the Legendary weapons. These were supposed to take upwards of a year to craft, but people managed to get it in a fraction of the time (largely thanks to the TP). Anet underestimated how hardcore and dedicated their players were when there’s something you really want.

Part of designing and marketing a game is to understand how your customers think. Every decision can have a consequence. Make the game too easy, the game dies faster. Make the game too hard, frustrated players will quit. Offer too many wealth faucets in a game that has a global economy, you break the economy. And offer a reward that outshines all other rewards, people will only care about that one reward.

Chris is no mere admin. He’s in charge of the security of the game.

I’m glad the rumors of a hack are false.

So people are now complaining to anet why they cant afford a luxury item.

Why not complain to your government why you can’t afford to buy a helicopter?

When it comes to “Entitlement”, anything can turn into a legitimate complaint.

But why would you want to punish a Seller who decides to offer the same item for cheaper? You can’t reward a person just because they posted first. The reward (the sale) should go to whomever has the cheapest priced item, be it 1 Copper or 1 Gold undercuts.

We reward the first to post by making the system a FIFO queue; but underbids by 1c for high priced items are essentially at the same price — at 0.0001%, you’re giving a reward for posting later rather than one for offering a better price. We shouldn’t be giving a reward for posting your sell offer last, unless it’s at a better price.

So — that’s why it would be OK to make changes here. The other arguments — which I made earlier — are why I believe it would improve the market place; this is why it would be OK to prevent another seller from undercutting by 1c. You didn’t find it convincing previous, so I don’t expect to convince you now, but you asked why I think this is OK.

So you want to reward people who post items with prices that might be too high? If I undercut someone by 1 Copper, that means I’m offering my goods for cheaper. Then it isn’t a matter of FIFO, or LIFO. It’s a matter of me presenting the consumers with an opportunity to buy an item for cheaper than the previously posted price.

If the other seller wants to have their items sold quicker, then they should have gave more thought into the prices they ask for. For example:

Price is reasonable enough – Their item will still sell quickly after my undercut. Undercuts in this case don’t matter.

Price is too high – If my undercut item is sold, and the other seller has to wait a long time to sell theirs, that means the demand for the item at that price is near non-existent. Then it’s the seller’s fault for asking too much.

Karka Queen success failure

I’ve never seen the Karka Queen melt like butter. She has two phases, and each phase has quite a bit of HP. This isn’t a design failure, but rather a possible bug. That, or it’s the player’s fault for not knowing the proper order to take settlements.

TP killing real mmo fun

you close it between a poor person with ap and a rich person without who plays the tp instead. not in general but in relation to tp players with little ap it does. it does less so for people with less ap, maybe linear who knows.

the monetary rewards within the ap progression have been there for a while, like sigils that have been adjusted or pvp rewards with which you were able to make quite some money.
you can only grind that much for ap, lots of it comes from playing the living story and getting achievments ingame.
Im not sure where you get that psychological standpoint that a majority of players would then assume that’s the only way to get rich . I mean, it’s a strong incentive to get all the achievments and follow the story, sure, even grind parts if you want to get there “faster” – lets say 1 year instead of 2 . Still nowhere even close to regular content and how much you could earn there. People aren’t stupid after all and almost everybody who does grind content knows basic math.

A poor person wouldn’t have 20k AP, or be remotely close to it.

As for incentive… just no. Advertising free 1k Gold if you hit 20k AP just makes players feel forced to race to the top. It’s because they’ll feel that it’s the only way to succeed. Like putting blinders on a race horse.

There’s rumors that there’s an exploit that allows you to skin an item, and not have it Account/Soul Bound. If this is true, the security team’s gonna be busy banning a lot of accounts.

It would make it more impractical, since then I’d have no control over what prices I’d like to post my items for. Sometimes I’ll undercut by 1 Copper. Sometimes I’ll undercut by 50 Gold, just so I can sell my item quicker. It depends on my mood. I don’t want artificial limits placed, since that does nothing but make Sellers mad.

Suggestions to improve quality of play in WvW

in WvW

Smooth Penguin.5294

None of these suggestions are viable. What we need is to have Anet double the CPU and RAM power of the servers, thus being able to handle more players per map. I’m tired of 80 man BL caps. We need at least 150 players per side.

An Idea to tone down 2v1 and slow down KTrain

in WvW

Smooth Penguin.5294

The issue isn’t about 2v1, which is an intentional side effect of 3 sides fighting each other. The issue lies with two servers cheating via win trading. I imagine Arena Net is keeping track of the cheaters, and will ban them en masse once the tournament is done. This would result in Black Gate becoming the dominant NA server again, though.

Do not mention he who shall not be named… This will then turn into a matchup thread.

There’s nothing to spend gold on other than luxuries.

People are therefore hoarding gold. It’s value therefore goes down and prices of said luxuries increase.

Actually… if everyone is hoarding Gold and not spending, that would mean prices of goods would fall in order to entice spending. When the US had our recession in the past few years, a lot of people started saving money, thus having a negative impact on the overall economic recovery. There were a lot of deals popping up all over in retail to get people to start spending.

But why fix something that isn’t broken? If adding a minimum % undercut won’t matter much, then why bother? If you want the market to reach that equilibrium faster, then just post your item for cheaper.

What it comes down to is that it’s the Seller’s fault for trying to sell their goods for a higher price. If my 1 Copper undercut prevents someone’s item from being sold for a long time, then that means the price is too high with such low demand.
