What you suggest is not a gold sink, it is a income nerf – a minor technicality.
Inflation is not why you have to pay 1000g for your Dust, supply and demand is.
“inflation” is the raise in price of /all/ items, not just luxury items.
Champ trains aren’t even in the top-5 non-TP ways to make gold in-game. To list a few better ways: daily dungeon runs (there are about 10 paths that give more gold/hour than champ train), guild commendations, world bosses & guesting. champ train is just the easiest.
If you want cheaper Dusts, just go make them, which will increase supply and decrease their price.

Champ Trains drop Champ Chests, which have a small chance to drop a Precursor. If you farm a stack of these per day, that’s 250 chances at a Precursor. That doesn’t include any Rares or Exotics that you also could have gotten.

I got a Rodgort’s Flame as a drop over the weekend, and the price didn’t go up by 200 Gold. Where’s the inflation for my item???

Technically Rodgort’s is also up 30% which is same percentage as with Legend and Dusk. Your problem is it’s 30% on 60g.

But it’s not 800+ Gold like the others. That’s not fair.

This is a discussion of inflation, not fairness — sorry u didn’t win the RNG lottery.

What an inconvenient truth to throw around. Guess he should see it coming.

Actually, the discussion was of the OP’s misunderstanding of the difference between what is Inflation, and what is Speculation.

Rich players can’t sell items for high prices if no one buys them. Same with low end mats. Supply and Demand only works when the demand part can be met by the consumer. If not, then the supply part will increase, thus bringing more prices down.

This is the thing you don’t understand. I can buy a precursor every 10 days just because all I do is farming all day. One of my guildmate can buy a precursor every couple weeks playing 3 hours a day, just because he can solo arah path 3 in 30 minutes. So does the flippers who can probably buy a precursor just because all he does is make a video about superior sigil of water.

But most people are poor either because they aren’t playing a specific way, or they just don’t play that enough. That dont’ mean people are rich. I’m not sure if there is even more gold in circulation.

Take for example. People in my country are “poor”. Our wage is 3$ US an hour. But the price of house is so expensive it’ll take a person working 50 years not spending any money to afford one.

The reason is the extreme wealthy people buying house, and we have “very low” tax on holding real estate. So in practical you really need to tax the “rich people only who hoard all the house”. That is not saying I suggest that happen in GW2.

In this situation, taxing the rich is the correct thing to do, because the government created such imbalances. However, in GW2, this isn’t about rich people not paying enough taxes. The issue here is that there might be too much wealth circulating in the economy.

Too much wealth would cause hyperinflation, which is bad for the economy.
But GW2 doesnt have hyperinflation, only a little inflation, which is no problem at all.

And a loot tax would be a preemptive strike against hyperinflation. That was part of the initial idea for this thread.

Look, I’m not sure why people are saying this is in any way trolling. I’m trying to find a way to balance the complaints that there’s too much wealth in this game. With the idea of loot tax, this affects all players across the board. It’s a way to control the wealth that the game generates by focusing on the point players receive it. It’s also a good way to keep rare items rare. If you don’t have enough money to pay for the tax on a particular item, you can’t pick it up. Prices would inevitably drop because there’s less total wealth in the world.

I dont think there are complaints that there is too much wealth in the game, its the perceived wealth disparity people seem to have a problem with.
Its also not very constructive to counter complaints with complaints.

It’s not so much an answer to a complaint with a complaint. It’s merely an observation that with a correctly placed tax, it could help to combat long term imbalances with wealth.

Lower prices are relative, if there is less gold coming into the game.

Which is why a loot tax would work, since it targets both the coin and items generated by faucets.

How do you gift a digital copy to a friend?

Digital copy is just a code. Get a copy and give your friend the code to use. Whoever registered that number owns the account.

Okay, so purchasing won’t automatically redeem the code like buying games on front digital storefronts (eg Steam, GOG, etc.) will?

Yeah, you shouldn’t compare Anet to Steam. When you make a digital purchase, the key is e-mailed to you, and you can then give it to someone else.

Keep in mind that should there be a dispute with the account (i.e. hacked), your friend will need to work with you, since you’d be the one who paid for the key in the first place. As long as you’re willing to provide him information at that point, there’s no problem.

or I don’t know… sell some item people will buy at fix price at merchant like the other 1000 mmorpg is doing.

Things like thermocatalytic reagent, which I’m sure Anet thought about already. Just have to decide if there’s a need to add more.

With this idea, it doesn’t touch the merchant values of the items in question, so people can sell all their goods for set prices to NPCs.

But inflation is still creeping up. By putting gates on the faucets in game, you slow the pace of inflation. And one of the results for less wealth generated is less overall wealth game wide. This would cause a recession, and lower the cost of goods.

And note – not everyone uses the Trading Post, so it’s not like they’ll be hit with a 15% tax twice.

Unfortunately, once your account is blacklisted, I have never heard of a case where Anet reversed it. This is because it costs real money for Anet to have to deal with chargebacks. They take a loss on the amount disputed, and also take a loss on merchant creditcard fees for such a reversal. This isn’t a case of a simple “oops”. There are consequences for all the businesses involved, from Anet, to the merchant, as well as your bank that disputed your claim.

After some debate about TP taxes, it just dawned on me that this game is missing a Gold Sink. Right now, it’s too easy to make money from doing Champ Train and other “loot stick” events in Orr. The rate of income that people generate from constant farming for loot bags could lead to inflation if not kept in check. There needs to be some balance in the rewards, as people doing Champ Trains in Orr make more money per hour than a new player starting in Queensdale or Plains of Ashford.

With inflation in mind, how does a 15% tax on all coin and item drops sound as a new Gold Sink? Couple this with the upcoming Champ Bag changes, and we have a good way to keep inflation down, and the value of the in game currency steady.

How does this work?

As you open loot bags across Tyria, or with the completion of events for rewards, a 15% tax could be levied on all coinage earned. The calculations would be pretty straight forward. But what of item drops? Well, here’s a crazy idea that could be implemented. What we could do is take the average value of any particular item found on the Trading Post in the last 24 hours, and a 15% tax based on that value could be deducted from your bank when you opt to collect on the item. If you’re unable to pay the tax, you can’t pick up the item from the bag/chest.

Why is this a good idea?

As time goes on, players in GW2 gain more and more wealth. With more wealth gained, the value of the in game currency starts to fall. With inflation, it takes more and more money in order to procure the basic goods, or even when buying items on the TP. Remember when the Precursor Dusk was 25 Gold? Now it’s 1,000 Gold. That’s inflation for you. Supply and Demand is a byproduct of people with more money to spend. But what if we’re able to curb the rate of inflation with more Gold Sinks? With more money taken out of the economy, the rate of inflation is slowed, thus making purchases of higher end goods more reasonable. As a side effect, prices of luxury items would decline as well. Because less people could afford to pay those prices, values of high end items like Precursors would fall substantially. A new equilibrium will be found, and item values would all remain affordable.

I’ve attached a graph as proof of what happens without Gold Sinks.

JS’s view on the subject is myopic at best. Yes, it is an element of the game, and it’s fine if that’s what you like to do, but it shouldn’t make that element above the rules that the rest of the game has to live by, namely that methods of gaining excessive profit over a period of time get slammed with a nerf bat as quickly as they can implement it. I would have no problem with people making money over the TP so long as it is within the range of similar ingame activities, and no, spending a few minutes working the TP does not equate to event farming for hours straight, so don’t argue that it’s possible to make comparable profits through regular activities.

If you want to continue working the TP, that’s fine, go right ahead, nothing I’ve suggested would involve preventing people from playing the TP. My only goal here is to balance out the profit potential, so that you would have to work as hard as anyone else to make the same level of profits.

Again with this “balance” thing. You cannot balance something without having anything to balance it with. The TP stands alone. Rewards from drops are “created” by loot tables. This items and coin did not exist in the game before the drop generated them. Profits gained from the TP are not generated. They are shared from existing coins. In fact, as you don’t seem to fully understand, the TP deletes 15% of coinage from the game. It’s called a Gold Sink.

So if you insist on balance, then I demand that a 15% tax be levied on all items and coin gained from world rewards. Fair is fair. Heck, this sounds like a new thread altogether!

Simply this: its a game. And a game should not mess up with real world economy rules. Players just want to have fun. No taxes or other negative real world features…

And it’s John’s job to make sure that players DO have fun by balancing the value of Gold and individual items. I’m sure you wouldn’t be having much fun if a single Vial of Powerful Blood or Vicious Claw cost 25 Gold each.

They wouldnt. Human nature would force people to farm those items to capitalize on their price (much like some TP “barons” already do), and do so in such quantity that the price of items would drop to a point where the supply outweighs the demand and suppresses the price.

As much as people complaining would hate to admit, and probably ignore, is the fact that anything that can impact the “barons” would have a far more immediate and greater impact on everyone else.

That true. But consider that if someone like John wasn’t there to manage the inflation of in game currencies. That 25 Gold that I referred to could be the equivalent to the 45 Silver that the T6 items are hovering at now. In that case, the rich are still rich, and the rest would still struggle.

People don’t know how good we have it in GW2. Our in game economist prevents this game from collapsing like D3.

Welcome to Fallacy Wars 2.

19 pages and counting, and the focus of this thread has bounced around greatly. It went from asking for a punishment for rich players, to wealth spreading, to improving Precursor drops. Most all the complainers keep using fallacies as their arguments, so it’s hard to get to the core of what they’re advocating for.

I’ll point out the following as simple as possible. Hopefully the complainers will understand:

1) No problem has been shown to exist.
1a) Personal preferences are not proof a problem exists.
2) You cannot compare quest rewards to TP profits. One is a loot from a predetermined table upon completion of a task. The other is movement on an open market with prices determined by Supply and Demand.
2b) In addition, the purpose for rewards are the completion of a task, while the purpose of the TP is part market, part Gold Sink.
3) Tax targeting rich players is unfair, and harms the economy
4) Jealousy is not a valid reason to punish players who have more than you.

Maybe because I’m not saying people have a problem with the TP?

You know what. Screw it. I’m done. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if I prove the problem or not. We disagree at such a fundamental level that it cannot be resolved or worked around. There is no point in me ever finishing that other post, because it will amount to nothing and just be another waste of time, like with my suggestion post.

We aren’t going to ever agree, so I may as well just stop and save myself a second headache.

Again, the points that we’re trying to make you understand is that there is no problem. Only you believe there’s a problem where one doesn’t exist. So in the grand scheme of things, the only true problem is yourself. Personal preferences do not equal a game wide problem.

Let’s make an assumption here, purely as an example to explain your situation:

You hate cabbage. So now you go to a restaurant that sells cabbage dishes and say “We have a problem, because cabbage tastes bad.” The patrons at the restaurant disagree. You come up with hypothetical solutions to make cabbage taste better. “Let’s add some flavor balance” you proclaim. “Make cabbage taste more like bacon, then I’ll be satisfied.” Then the manager comes out and asks you to prove a problem exists. You then say “Well, because people will leave this restaurant if cabbage continues to taste bad.” We come in and tell you that this restaurant is almost always full of people ordering cabbage. Some order more cabbage than they can handle. Finally you come out and say “It’s not fair for you to enjoy cabbage when I don’t. We have to find a balance where we both agree”.

I’m hoping this will help you to understand your inherent uphill battle in this debate.

For your suggestion to work, we would need to get rid of gold altogether

How so? Literally the only thing my suggestion did was bring other currencies to be on par with gold. That’s all. People will then just choose what currency they want to use based on the kinds of activities they gravitate towards.

That would destabilize Gold, since now all other currencies are just like it. Why use Gold, when I have 10 million Karma to spend on everything I need?

Edit – and if this were to happen, the next logical step would be to put a tax on Karma.

haha i like People like Mr Smith xD

Little question
Could we see the really rich People ingame, probably all Traders, as an important tool to take Money out of community? i mean the most just Play the TP to Play the TP, its their endgame. They Need to have so much Gold, that they cant even use all of them, just when they Change the Gold to gems for Special gem store items.
Just imagine what would happen if all rich People throw all Gold they have to the market. i think that could be a bigger problem

Anytime a TP player uses the TP to make a transaction, 15% of the coin used is destroyed. So yes, they’re very important to the health of the value of Gold. As for throwing all their money to the market, that does two things. 1) The game still loses 15% of all transactions due to the Gold Sink functions of the taxes, and 2) the money is just spread around to other players (depending on the items sold).

So if one rich TP player, or a dozen buy everything they want with the massive amount of Gold they have, they’re just making other players rich. The wealth in game just moved around, minus 15%.

If you’re just going to continue to ignore that I made a suggestion outside of the argument with you about effort, then I am done responding to you from this point forward, because you’re either being purposefully ignorant, or trolling.

Given your little “Dark Side” snark, I’m going with the latter. In which case, meaningful discourse is completely impossible with you and further words would only be wasted.

You offered solutions to problems that don’t exist. You then justify your position by saying that everyone should be making the same money, as long as the effort is the same. Furthermore, you then try to explain that effort is effort, so there’s no difference to spending 5 minutes on the TP to make 100 Gold and harvesting a node or killing the Shadow Behemoth.

I’m merely trying to explain to you that your entire argument is flawed, and any implementation would lead to a catastrophic disaster for the economy.

NOTICE: THIS REQUEST WILL BE CONSIDERED WHEN BL KEYS ARE NO LONGER BOUGHT BY PLAYERS IN THE GEM STORE….

…THAT IS ALL.

I bought 75 BL Keys from the previous sale. My apologies for cancelling that request.

You told me that if I can make 100 Gold doing “A”, then everyone should make 100 Gold doing “B”, C", or “D”. You want the wealth to be distributed equally, thus eliminating the different class of players. Anet (the State) would provide for and represent the interests of the Players (working class).

Yes, based on effort.

But people kept saying: “Can’t do that because inflation in gold value and such”

So I suggested something completely different. Something incapable of hurting TP Players potential profits, something that doesn’t take anybody’s wealth away, something that doesn’t cause inflation. Something that would have no meaningful impact on ANet profits. Something that does all those things and yet allows everyone to “win”, whatever their given value of “win” is.

But everyone ignored it, so I said “kitten it” and went back to arguing extremes, because that’s all any of you actually care about or focus on.

You’re not taking my wealth away, you’re devaluing it by sharing the payouts I make with everyone else in this game. Assuming equal effort, your idea is that with my 100 Gold made within 5 minutes, the person who spent the same effort and time harvesting Omnom nodes should get 100 Gold too.

This leads to inflation. Inflation leads to anger of the free market. Anger leads to hate of the free market. And hate of the free market leads to the Socialist side.

first of all, communism has yet to exist it is an ideal that has never actually been implimented.

second of all communism is not an just an economic policy. Capitalism is an economic policy.

btw Pure capitialism fails, this is known, the most successful economies right now, including america are mixed economies.

Now, im not saying everyone needs to have even wealth, just pointing out that the whole capitilism vs communism idea is mostly theoretical and has no real analogs

I was trying to point out that when one person feels Entitled to the same things as others, and rewarded based on the idea that everyone should share the wealth, that’s never a good thing IRL or in game.

Example – One person puts in effort to make 100 Gold on the Trading Post, so another person putting effort into harvesting Omnomnoms should get the same 100 Gold. This breaks the economy.

Which is why I haven’t suggested spreading the wealth. Jesus Christ, Schizo is literally the only one that read my kittening suggestion.

On a personal level, having a sense of Entitlement isn’t bad or wrong. But I did say that you can’t use that an excuse to spread the wealth. Communism failed because of the same ideas you’re pushing. So if we already know it’s a bad idea, and proven through the collapse of countries, why are you still pushing this to happen in the GW2 economy?

That’s actually not why those countries failed. Not even remotely. As a rule of thumb, if Reagan said something, the opposite was probably true.

But boy, oh boy, I do NOT have the energy for a poli sci 101 argument on the gw2 forums tonight. I’m saving it for wvw reset.

If you compare a country based on Capitalism, and one that’s based on Communism, you’ll notice that one is prosperous and one isn’t. It would be similar to what some are advocating for here.

If you impose a mandate that all players must have equal wealth, then you eliminate the need for any type of reward structure. GW2 then turns into a single player console game, where the end game is just starting over with a new character.

You want to make everyone lose money and wait longer why exactly?

It strikes me as a protectionist position. Some people want to post their item for price X and then have government regulation (the ArenaNet enforced 1% undercut rule) protect their price point from competition by making undercuts more expensive.

Like I said before, it’s a solution looking for a problem.

So you’re saying that the people pushing for these 1% minimums, are really just pursuing anti-competition policies?

Fairness = what I deserve=entitlement.

Entitlement is not inherently bad or wrong.
