Keep getting hacked! WHY?

in Account & Technical Support

Smooth Penguin.5294

So what you’re saying is that you want Anet to take additional measures, beyond a player’s valid e-mail address, to request changes? You seem to have missed the simple fact that if a player’s e-mail is compromised, there’s nothing else Anet can do that the hacker wouldn’t have access to. You could have 10 extra steps involved, and the account would still be stolen. Why? Because if the e-mail account isn’t secure enough to prevent someone from taking it over, nothing is secure.

Each of us is responsible for protecting our personal information. Be it e-mail access, or account access. There’s no point in putting up more barriers, when the key barrier (the e-mail account) is already breached.

I’ve made this suggestion in the past (and been ignored) and always get this response from some other player. WHY do other players NOT want the system to be improved? I KNOW and have repeatedly acknowledged that this is NOT Anet’s fault, but improving a system does not always have to be about who’s responsibility it is to prevent the failure. I would pay RL money if I could tell ANet to Support to NEVER CHANGE MY PASSWORD WITH A SIMPLE EMAIL. Bottom line THAT would stop a significant number of hacked accounts.

My suggestion is simply that. If Anet REALLY wants to stop the obviously main source of account hacks these days AND reduce their overall Support resource demands, they would consider it. That is all I am saying.

I see NO reason why what I am suggesting would cause ANY additional work for Customer Service. There is ALREADY an automated email sent out from the ticket system and I have personally used Zendesk (what Anet is using for Support) and it has very easy tools to set up automated responses to include a link to the on-line web ticket submission page. The ticket would then be handled like every other ticket submitted via that AND would have info that could be verified rather easily (I’m hoping they have some automated system to throw up red flags if the info is missing or not even close to correct) by Support Agents.

I challenge anyone to prove that if 50% of hacks NEVER happen (I think this change would stop more than that), Anet Support would have MORE work to do. I think this makes sense and is a win-win for both players and the Support team. THAT is why I have been aggressive in making this suggestion when it seems appropriate.

If I am missing an actual down side to this proposed policy change, please enlighten me (and note, “Anet shouldn’t have to change it’s policy because your personal security sucks.”, is NOT an actual downside). Also note that I don’t argue that statement is false….it is certainly true, but what they shouldn’t have to do and what they COULD do to improve the system is my point.

I’m not saying I’m against protections (technically). Protections are always good. But in this case, not so much. I’m advocating that players stop getting their e-mails hacked in the first place. A majority of the time, it’s the player’s fault. Lack of PC security, poor pw choices, going to naughty websites, buying gold from an RMT, etc.

If a player makes poor choices, having their GW2 account get hacked can actually be a blessing in disguise. It would make them be more aware of their lack of security, and then they’ll take steps to protect themselves better. Think of it like a life lesson. It’s better to be sad that your GW2 account was hacked, than to be ruined if your identity was stolen. For this, I say no to additional protections.

Please Boost Dragonite Ore Drops

I’m not sure why a smart person like yourself is unable to understand that for some other people’s play dragonite is not easy while empyreal is in abundance. I mean… just because it’s fine for you it is actually possible it isn’t okay for everyone. You get that right? You’re very smart. I know that. So… yeah

Let’s sum up this discussion. Anet made it possible to get all Ascended mats as drops. Dragonite, Empyreal, and Bloodstone. So if I’m able to get tons of Dragonites, and someone else is able to get tons of Empyreals and Bloodstones, then everything is working as intended. Bottom line, I’m playing the wrong content, since I’m getting way too much Dragonite, and the other players are playing the wrong content, and getting too much Empyreals. If we switched off, and played each other’s content, then there’d be no problems.

Seems we just solved everyone’s problems.

Gaile,

Unless the policy has changed recently, I have to take exception to your comment about taking “lots of means of identifying the person”. Currently (as far as I know), if an email comes into Support from a valid email address that says, “Forgot my password.”, Support initiates a password change with NO information requested.

Correct me if I am wrong, but THAT (I believe) is the source of 90% of hacked accounts right now. A simple policy change could prevent ALL of those account hacks (even tho, it is NOT Anet’s fault to hacks are happening). Simply pointing all password change emails to the link to submit a ticket via the website (where validating information MUST be put in to submit a ticket) would close this (in my opinion) loophole in the system.

Not trying to be combative or contradictory, but just trying to point out that despite what you claim, more COULD be done to prevent MANY of these hacks. I get this would end up being more work on players and Support for legit password changes, but it would HAVE to cut down on Support being required to fix a multitude of hacks that would not happen in the first place.

Again, just my 2 cents.

So what you’re saying is that you want Anet to take additional measures, beyond a player’s valid e-mail address, to request changes? You seem to have missed the simple fact that if a player’s e-mail is compromised, there’s nothing else Anet can do that the hacker wouldn’t have access to. Dragonite drop need to be nerfed. I get so many of these things, it’s unreal. The drops exceed even the Bloodstones.

This is so false. What are you on about?

We’ve got people in this thread who talk about being swimming in dust, saying how the fragments are easy enough through dungeons, but are struggling with dragonite. I know a person in my guild who has been running out of it as well, yet has no issues with the other two mats.

I’ve a lot of Dragonite as well and have deleted my fair share of it, but that is only because I’ve chosen to not make lots of ascended armor because I hate the cloth money sink. But I’m still able to recognise the disproportional rate you gain it compared to the other two mats, largely because of megaservers and the issues they’ve caused with Orr Temples.

Most of us who’ve been playing since the start of ascended gear have a lot of it saved up from before the megaserver change. So this “lol, I have so much, nerf it plx” is being completely dense to the rate of acquisition post-megaserver.

I must be playing this game right, because I can get one stack to upwards of 2 stacks of Dragonite (on a really good day) per day. That would be triple the amount of Empyreals and Bloodstones that I could get. I’ll put it in actual numbers so you can understand more clearly:

Typical day
Dragonite – ~250
Empyreal – ~100
Bloodstone – ~100

So as you can see, Dragonites are too common.

I have too much dragonite. I’d rather it not get boosted. Teq is about the only place I get them (due to new megaserver schedule), and I have too much.
I’d rather Emp fragments be boosted back up. I seem to never get that many of those.

I’m in the same boat. I do world bosses daily and a good amount of WvW. Dragonite has now overtaken bloodstone as my most abundant ascended material by a considerable amount.

I just emptied my bank of two tabs of dragonite and bloodstone again…

I had to do another run to Balth Temple to buy more Obi Shards. The sheer amount of Dragonites I get force me to stock up on at least 4 stacks of Obi Shards per visit.

Note – I could spam 100,000 “no” votes to your 5 “yes” votes, and it would hold the same weight as 100,000 “yes” votes to 5 “no” votes. Why? Because meaningless poll is meaningless. The only accurate way to get data is to work for Anet, and have access to their metrics.

If the rewards for the side missions weren’t skills or too different stat wise than what is “free”, then I don’t think many will have a huge issue with it. Or too much loot (either quality or quantity).

The moment that there is a new skill or a super neat item that’s better stat wise, then it turns into pay to win. Or a higher percentage of loot or better quality loot

Unless you want those new skills to be just as useful as racial skills or the Mistfire Wolf Elite.

Which of course then turns into: why even bother paying for it if it isn’t going to be rewarding?

When I first got the Bonus Mission Pack for GW1, I didn’t do it for the rewards. I wanted to experience part of the Guild Wars lore.

There’ve only been 12 votes on the poll but 5 out of 12 are willing to spend 500 gems towards an item that doesn’t really give them anything because it goes towards a new class. I think that alone says something

It worked well in GW1. The content they sold for $10 was just mini missions. In these missions, you played as someone from history and relived their tales. My favorite was when Gwen had to escape from the charr, and in the process, learned her Mesmer skills.

Remember, this content would be all optional side missions, with no impact on the current game. DLC if you will. But I wouldn’t mind if they gave bonuses to paying customers like me.

Looking back to my time with Guild Wars 1, I really enjoyed the stories in the Bonus Mission Pack. These were missions that had no impact on the original game or story, but did give some nice lore background, along with unique rewards. It only cost $10 to add to your account, so it was affordable.

Anet should consider doing more of these optional paid content for GW2. With the current storylines in place, there could be options to play as one of the characters in the Destiny’s Edge history. Play in Snaff’s past, or perhaps Caithe’s backstory. See Rytlock’s rise, or Logan’s fight to save the Queen. With Gems, all players could get access to bonus missions without having to pay real money. Taking this idea to the next level, players who do buy Gems with real money should get bonus, exclusive content! Something like a consumable that grants the ability to wear two full rune sets on armor.

Anyway, this could be a way to start a CDI on future paid content ideas. How do people feel about this?

Smooth Penguin.5294

Any gem salvage kit that would give you a chance at a rare item is a very bad idea. You know their is a salvage market right? Where a dozen players salvage ten of thousands of items a hour to give you cloth/leather. Since that is one of the few ways to get cloth/leather.

Even a 20% chance of watchwork sprockets would cripple that market and drive the prices of it down. Since it could increase the supply of sprockets by up to 20% of all cloth/leather on the market. That would making sprockets worthless. You can buy salvage unlike mining node which you have to look for.

Thing is, Watchwork Sprockets aren’t a rare item. They’re pretty common, because you can farm them in your home instance once per day.

How it would work:

Each time you salvage an item, you have a 20% chance to get a Watchwork Sprocket and a Blade Shard. Instead of 3 Copper per use, it should be 4 Copper. The 33% increase would justify the additional chance to get bonuses.

Paying for past content?

Smooth Penguin.5294

As a brand new player I would LOVE to be able to play LS1 first to “catch up” with what is going on, as LA before it was destroyed looks great and would love to be able to play up to current, so I am then up to date…

Would love as a new player to be able to jump in for Free and play LS1 so we can catch up, would suck if I had to pay for content that was Free and in my mind, should be included to build the story

If you’re a new player, then it’s your lucky day. You don’t need to spend any money outside of the box price you paid for this game! Just convert Gold to Gems, and you can get all the extra you want, for zero (0) dollars!

This message is brought you to today by #TeamGnashblade.

Also, be sure to keep playing that BLTC “Flip my Item” for big rewards if you’re lucky enough to be the first dozen or so to get it to drop.

. . . seriously, people cleaned up on that so hard it’s amazing.

One more aside – stop chopping up analogies by picking out semantics and such, that’s getting annoying. Any analogy is by nature imperfect, and I really wish it had stopped the instant I hit fractions in grade school and had the pie analogy used. “But I don’t like cherry pies…” came from the back of the room, derailing the topic for days. Don’t let this happen to you.

Time to return to topic.

Honestly, there are only two downsides I can see to this:

- Players who cannot, for whatever reason, purchase Gems to purchase the unlocks. Let’s face it, there is a considerable chance people will not be willing/able to put the grind time in to earn Gold enough to buy 200 Gems. There are also people who are without access to a credit card for buying them via the store. This can foster a feeling of dissatisfaction over the apparently insurmountable fence between them and content they missed.

- New players when we hit Season 6 could look back, see the huge pile of price tags for the previous seasons, and decide to just opt out of the game entirely as a “naked and blatant cash grab” is seen. Assuming we actually get new players six years from now . . .

There are a few things to consider that solves the issues you brought up.

1) Log in and play the content, and you get access to all of it for free

2) If you can’t afford to convert enough Gold to 200 Gems, that means you don’t have enough time to play all the current content, and go back to play the previous ones. That’s when we have a new problem with “too much content”, which no one ever complains about.

3) You don’t need a creditcard to buy Gems. You can use PayPal, or you can get Gem Cards from your favorite local retailer. See list here: https://www.facebook.com/GuildWars2/posts/10151161572874209

4) It can’t be a “blatant cash grab” when it doesn’t cost a single penny to get. It’s an optional purchase that can be bought using virtual currency you get in game.

Because without RNG, rewards would all become common as dirt. No prestige. No desire to have. So once you take away the desire to have the reward, you take away the desire to do the content that gives the reward.

Why do you assume that the prestige must be attached to the item/reward? Can’t the prestige come from doing the event in and of itself?

Just look at Super Adventure Box. There’s always threads asking for it to come back. The skins and rewards aren’t difficult to get and many loved it. Tribulation mode didn’t offer any reward you couldn’t get from normal mode, and again many loved just doing Tribulation mode for the prestige.

Realize that SAB is “rare”. It’s not permanent content. It’s something that comes along once in a while, and people love doing it while it’s here. Should SAB be here permanently, I guarantee you people will get tired of it, same as with anything else. It’ll be just another piece of content.

As for the other responses. MMOs always have to have a carrot, or people will not want to play. Carrots can be anything. Rare items, epic quests, hard mode gameplay, etc. Doing an epic quest just for the fun of it is a legitimate statement. There are those who play just for fun. But a larger percentage of the population wants rewards. If a majority of the population got their rewards, there won’t be a need to do it again. At the same time, the reward in question won’t mean as much, as more people get them. Just like a rare weapon. When Infinite Light came out, players who had it were godly. People flocked to see who spend all that money on a non-Legendary weapon. Now, as more people get it, it’s “ho-hum, nice sword”. It lost it’s appeal, because it became more common to see. Then people who have it, stopped showing it off.

Anyway it was also completely off-topic. You know I am against the cash-shop for very valid reasons, you apparently never bothered to think about what I was saying meaning I would basically be asking for a way to pay and now you see my comment here, only read the first line and leave a complete off-topic reaction that makes no sense whatsoever.

There aren’t many valid reasons against having a microtransaction shop. The company has a responsibility to make money. If you present players with optional content for real money, key word optional, then it’s the players who decide if they want to pay or not. This becomes a different story when you sell “cash shop” items that grant overpowered advantages over non-paying players. This is call P2W, and it’s a good thing GW2 isn’t like this.

People point at GW1 as having an expansion only model. However, this is entirely incorrect. GW1 also had a cash shop, and by many standards was not successful until they introduced the cash shop.

Keep in mind that this was back when Anet was TINY compared to today even when they’re still considered a small studio.

There are no MMOs that subsist on an expansion-only model.

Also, while GW1 had an expansion model and a small cash shop one, GW2 is making NCSoft a heck of a lot more money now, than in all the years GW1 is in existence.

I have a similar problem. After sitting at the local coffee shop sipping ice water and making use of their free wi-fi for half an hour, they tell me I have to buy something or leave! Why should I have to pay money just to use their services, I bought a coffee there once a couple years ago. Isn’t that enough?

Don’t worry mate, the next coffee is on me!

Or you can you know, login one time during the two weeks that event is available and have it unlocked for free.

It is unlock forever, for the account.

I just told my kids.. we cant go on holiday this year or maybe even next cos otherwise I gotta pay out another 200gems to catch up with LS season 2 …

EDIT – Problem solved, I just dug a big hole in the garden, filled it with sand then made another hole next to it.. just waiting for it to rain some more to fill the second hole up and create the perfect beach in my own back garden – they will never notice!

Well I guess this is their way around developing expansions and hiding the criticism of temporary content…

Really…?The 5 extra bucks you will have to spend or the 3 extra days of gaming to raise the in-game money is enough to make you feel you should not go on holiday…Really?

Pretty sure he was being sarcastic…apparently it went right over your head. You must be sheldon cooper….

As long as you explain to your kids why GW2 is more important than going to the beach, they’ll understand. And a good parent would bond with their kids by forming a family only Guild! Get them all their own accounts, and you can slay dragons together.

I’m on Mag, facing DB and SoS. Fighting a big zerg in SM doesn’t give me lag disconnects, but rather your typical slowdown when fighting zerg vs zerg in a small area. Could this problem be server or player specific?

Looking over the LS season 2 blurb I spotted this “Past episodes will be available for purchase for 200 gems”

Does this mean if we want to reply any LS content we need to pay for it in gems? Is it an unlock a chapter forever fee for every account or is it character bound? If we pay for a chapter can we team with people who haven’t?

Personally, not sure how I feel about this move. To me it seems to step over the ‘morality line’ and move GW2 to a payment model I don’t really like..

Hmm

If you log in during the release window of an episode (e.g. two weeks) you unlock the episode for your account. You can replay it as many times as you want for free. If you miss the release window and you want to play an episode that you didn’t unlock, you can purchase it.

It’s a lot like watching television in that you can watch (and record) an episode for free when it airs. If you miss it, you can buy the episode off iTunes later. Does that make sense?

No it doesn’t make sense. You are talking about having to go to a completely different company in order to access a TV episode you missed when it aired. In GW2’s case, we wouldn’t be going anywhere else to purchase the living story content we missed.

It’s pretty common for cable and satellite boxes to have DVR capabilities so you can set it to record TV shows and watch them at your convenience if you’re not going to be able to watch it when it airs, or if you want to rewatch a favorite episode. You may pay an extra little bit on your monthly bill to be able to do that, but you aren’t charged (as far as I know) each time you use the feature.

You do in fact pay for the DVR service as a subscription. You pay a higher cable rate to have it included in most cases than you would with base cable which typically does not include such services.

In this case, you could pay a subscription of fifteen bucks a month and have it included, or you pay two fifty for an episode you missed since there’s no subscription associated.

You have a good point. I didn’t realize this, because I don’t have a DVR or Digital cable. I’d rather play GW2 than to watch TV anyways.

My experience trying boss blitz

My experience.

70+ of us all donate to Hobotron, and fill the bar in under a second.

We split into even groups for all bosses.

Each group get their boss down to critical health by the 3 minute mark.

Blitz leader calls for the kill on TeamSpeak.

All bosses die within seconds of each other.

Gold BB chest.

Repeat 20 times.

Your analogy doesn’t work here, because you need to actually play the content first before you can access it later for free. It would be akin to having to watch the TV episode first, record it, and then you can rewatch it later on. That’s oldschool, before automatic DVR technology. On the other hand, if you completely missed the LS content/TV show, you can pay to have a chance to watch it for the first time.

This new direction is brilliant. It creates permanent content. It allows for new players to experienced previous missed content. And (business wise) provides a new potential revenue stream. I’ve spend hundreds of dollars on Gems, and will keep doing so for years to come.

Each season is ~$60…

Each season is free. If you miss previous seasons, and wish to access it, it doesn’t cost money. Just exchange Gold for Gems, and you get it for zero (0) dollars.

You’re welcome.

Free? hardly.

How does a new player get $60 worth of gold? That’s what I thought. Don’t be facetious.

The new player can play the game, earn Gold normally, and go back and enjoy content they missed. Again, it costs zero (0) dollars.

I’m glad I’m able to help you understand this concept.

Go look up the conversion costs of gold to gems. Yea, a new player can EASILY get 400g to get ONE season…lol. Keep on trolling bro.

Please show me where Anet has a policy that a new player needs to farm and collect enough Gold in a single day. If a player does the normal available content, they can collect enough Gold to exchange for Gems. Remember, this is a convenience to them, because they joined the game late. New content is being developed each month.

If the new player is a Casual, the current LS content and open world content will be more than enough for them. If they want to access past events, that option is available if they choose to get it.

If the new player is more Hardcore, they’ll be able to eat up the current LS content, all the open world content, and have more than enough Gold to get past content. 400 Gold isn’t hard to get when a player plays a lot.

PS – I’ve played the Gem Exchange market, so I know exactly how it works, and how much it costs both ways: Gems -> Gold and Gold -> Gems.
