Why are WvW and PvE servers linked?

I believe the original point was to have PvPers benefitting PvEers. That’s what those bonuses are when you’re earning points each week. It’s a way to have some synergy between the two types of game play which rarely happens in an MMO.

I’ve played 1200+ hours of GW2 and never once have I witnessed evidence of this synergy actually existing, i.e. a PvE player thanking a WvW player for the bonuses.

I mean WvW is run on entirely separate servers right? Just because there are 24 NA PvE servers doesn’t mean there has to be 24 WvW as well…. does it?

I think 15 or 18 servers would be more competitive than what we have now, and it would be an entirely separate type of transfer from PvE transfers.

Ratings are pretty pointless to discuss because 9 times out of 10 its simply a product of:

1. low server goes up, middle goes down, top server can go either way but not a lot
2. if #1 is not true its because of recent population changes (inaccurate ratings)

and every once in awhile a difference in coverage ex: IoJ

Even more pointless to discuss since the leagues will be starting.

Apparently Thursday there will be an announcement about changes to the league system that will be coming.

GTFO… We don’t need to understand that or we won’t be fighting over in the thread and keep it fun.

I honestly don’t care troll me if u want, I was just stat fact you had more then us people outside the keep with acs, people on the walls with even more acs and to top it off you had even more people on acs behind the wall, you think your good your wrong fight us straight up or you just have no skill, in a keep defense I understand acs are needed and apart of the game, I don’t know how many times y’all tried to push us to get whipped so shut ur mouths, see you tonight and praying for better fights with people that don’t run and play with tactics/skill!

D/D ele has a high skill ceiling as well as a high floor.

its not the easiest class/build to play. you have to constantly chain through 25 skills at all times. not recommended if you dont like pushing a kitten-load of buttons.

ET is winning because they had a better turnout at reset taking all 3 of our keeps with a ~50 man zerg and DR joined in taking advantage of that opportunity.

We definitely underestimated ET this match and paid for it over the weekend. But don’t expect a rematch to repeat this pattern

..the game is maturing and players are reaching end-game. they’ve found the class(es) they like and got their gear and appearance they are happy with and aren’t broke anymore, etc. Now they move on to PvP and WvW which is really the end-game for GW2.

The #s going up has nothing to do with WvW changes and has everything to do with the increasing average tenure of your player base.

GW2 WvW is a friggin awesome idea at its core. Just look at how much we all care, even pleading and begging on the forums to fix broken mechanics a YEAR LATER, and yet we are still playing the game despite how neglected we feel.

But why are we still playing? Because we know what WvW can and should be, and we are in love with THAT idea and it’s all of us collectively hoping it someday comes to exist that has kept us around so far.

In the meantime we have even attempted to create our own fun and competition to get us by; take fight nights and GvGs for example. Why did we? Because sPvP is boring and WvW is not competitive. Now those too are bordering extinction due to recent changes.

We are being forced to choose between either skill lag and queues or complete blowouts.

I feel that you’re making decisions based on WvW population #s that would have gone up anyway, and that if you could see a graph of what COULD HAVE been and compared it to reality, you’d realize how big of an opportunity continues to be missed here. Other games like ESO are watching you closely and learning from your mistakes. Lucky for you, there is still time to secure your game’s lasting place in the market. But I’m afraid that at this rate by the time you have enough “data” to realize what you need to do to fulfill the awesomesauce that GW2 WvW could and should be, everyone will have already moved on with prejudice.

screw that I built 5 omegas and then get a message that WvW is shutting down for an update. 5 minutes later I am kicked from WvW and when I re-enter they are gone.

Can we get more than 5 kitten minutes notice Anet? every game I’ve EVER played online SCHEDULES their maintenance.

Whenever I see that a build will be available “in the next hour or two” I know that means about 5-10 minutes.

D/D ele is still very survivable and in group fights provides great CC’s and buffs.

But I’m built a lil more tanky – dolyak runes with all sentinel’s gear and some celestial ascended trinkets. sigils of energy and life, swap out life for force when 25 stacks reached.

I can solo a camp without pulling guards, but it definitely takes too long – sometimes the first guards to die respawn before I have it capped.

Making sure you land your churning earth is absolutely a must – if you’re not using armor of earth (for stability) and teleporting during cast to make sure you land it, you really need to start doing so

Also make sure you triple-blast your fire fields (fire 3 or 4 + dodge-roll earth into field + earthquake + churning earth) to keep stacks of might up for you and your friends.

And try to always use fire grab on burning targets. When you’re earth 4/5 are cooling down use magnetic leap in fire fields for the fire shield combo.

Start fights with lightning aura+RTL+updraft then into the combo above, using teleport to land the churning earth, and you can really start a fight off with the upper hand.

plus you should have more healing and condi removals than anything that isn’t a guardian.

personally I never played D/D ele when it was “godly” before the patches, so I learned under the current meta, and I don’t think it’s underpowered. It did however kitten me off when cleansing fire was no longer a stun breaker.

For season 1 I think I’m going to play the way Anet wants me to. If season 1 “winners” are BG, SoR, YB and KN, then I’m going to show my displeasure in the league setup by doing PvE for season 2.

I’d love to see Anet’s reaction of a BG/FA/BP matchup where FA and BP just don’t play, and BG wins 300,000/0/0, but I don’t think they’re listening.

some pesky nub would flip a camp and make it 299,995/5/0 and ruin everything.

Every NA tier is a BLOWOUT.

Then at the start of every season wipe the slate clean and force every player to pick the server they want for that season. Pick the same one or not, up to you. Make a new group of friends every 7 weeks. Get to go up with and against all the guilds across GW2.

This is a very interesting idea. I think that splitting WvW from PvE could really make a huge difference in populations. Anet could basically make less worlds, becuase obviously there are less people in WvW than PvE. Each world would have a higher population and better battles over all.

With that being said, I think it should be implemented in the same way it is now with only one server. Once you pick you server. You stay there or transfer from gems (Or just locked in) I don’t like the idea of people being forced to repick servers each season only due to the fact that the people who would like to play with each other every season may not be able to due to the fact that the server could possibly fill and be forced to chose another.

Yea kind of rethinking that part myself – original idea was since WvW server would no longer be tied to PvE server, a WvW-only transfer option would be available and would cost less than a full transfer. WvW-only transfers would take effect upon next weekly reset (can’t transfer during a matchup). WvW-only transfers would not be available to T1 you’d have to do a full transfer at full cost to get to T1. WvW-only transfers would be free to T8.

Every NA tier is a BLOWOUT.

With the shifting that’s happening where would you guess FC will be sitting around the beginning of league play? I know to try to pin that down is close to impossible, im not looking for anything more than an educated guess from someone who seems like they have their finger on the WvW population pulse.

While trying to bring more life into FC, what is the goal? Are you pushing for Upper Silver, Gold? Just to get more people to survive some of the upper crust beatings that are headed towards the low pop servers?

I’m playing Ferg now, down in the dregs and I believe all three of our servers are in for some hurt. What I Like about FC is you not only have some talented players, groups and guilds, but I like the attitude I pick up from your server.

do you have a server site for communication? TS?

As of right this moment we would be roughly 7th / 8th place in silver league. We can comfortably come in ahead of DR/AR/ET/GoM, but SF is a mystery since it’s been quite awhile since we’ve fought against them (and would partly depend who else is in the match).

Our goal is to get a couple more guilds and hop up into that competitive bubble between HoD, NSP, DH, and Kaineng, which are all fairly equal now considering the guilds that left DH and continue to leave Kaineng. Only IoJ and YB would be lopsided matches and we can work on 2v1’ing them.

I suppose to quantify our goal it would be initially to reach top 5 in silver league. Gold league is not something I am even considering in the near future. If that ever looks like a possibility we’ll revisit

and yes we use a server TS3 that is nicely organized including cross-channel commander chat. I hope that answers your questions

besides TS3 we have a server website and forums, but most of our com’s are through TS3 such as weekly commander meetings and server meetings etc.

one possible idea to fix this would be what I’d like to coin – a balance of powers mechanism – the total dps and health of the server you are fighting – gets spread out to the opposing server ….. so if server A has 500 people that can do, 1 million dps total – and server B only has 10 people ….the game balances the power by giving those 10 people – 100k dps each along with the the equivalent health – then it would be fun to fight the odds and be underdog. I’d love nothing more than to get swarmed and zap out 10 people at a time with 1 shot. THAT would be FUN and Justice.

the 2 guilds can both send members to ensure they hold their own BL buffs, so each has +50.

the 3rd server without a guild in the match just needs to hold their own buff so tell your guilds to leave that buff alone or at least have a scout there to warn the GvG teams if the buff is about to flip to one of their sides.

Large groups are part of the game

Dear players who are anti-zerg – hate to say it but large groups are here to stay.

The “vision” of WvW includes epic sieges not smatterings of little skirmishes across the map. Reality will always include both.

I personally enjoy both myself. I don’t enjoy PvD facerolling in the least, but I do love a good Zerg vs Zerg open field fight (in lower tiers so I’m talking about 20v20, 30v30, 40v40 max anything more than that is just a skill lag fest).

We don’t need to discourage playing as a large group, but rather discourage them stacking as a ball on top of each other and look at changing the way in which large groups function.

I can think of 2 very interesting (fantasy) ways to accomplish this:

One would be to have actual clipping, i.e. you cannot occupy the same space as another (allied) player. a group of 40 would not be able to stack in a super-tight ball, nor would they want to because then they can’t MOVE! melee would have to make sure they are in the front lines and not caught in the back, and so on. zergs would become less of a ball and more closely resemble a medieval army formation. Thus they would much more susceptible to small groups picking off the peripheral players, flanks, etc. Blinks, portals, stealth, and certain other skills would bypass clipping. Clipping should most definitely also apply to golems!!! No more 12 golems on a gate (unless they’re omegas all ranging it – hey if you want to spend 25 gold on one keep you deserve it imo!!)

Another awesome idea would be to add a limit of 5 attacks per second per WORLD on a given player. This means that no more than 5 enemy players per second can hit you with an offensive skill. This more applies to ranged classes if there was clipping because with clipping it would be difficult to have more than 5 melee players even be in range to hit the same target. The easiest way I think to accomplish this is every time you are struck by an enemy you get a stack of “under fire” – each stack lasts 1 second and when you have 5 stacks you are invulnerable. The invulnerability would naturally last less than 1 second (until the first stack fell off) but if you were being mass targeted by a large zerg it would keep kicking in, preventing you from just insta-melting (not that it’s going to let you win 1vX.

Combine both of these and I can see small skilled groups picking off and widdling away large groups piece by piece, hurrying to weaken them enough that by the time the gate/wall is down their #s are now manageable with the lord+guards+siege helping you.

Last night we had a group of about 15. We had all 3 buffs on. We were at a camp and about 15 of the enemy stacked up and charged towards us.

I’ve never seen a group wipe so fast – I don’t think any of them even reached us. I didn’t even see their health going down just one second they’re running towards us the next second they’re all downed.

Apparently they have plans to upgrade the C&S system. No idea what changes or if it’s things the players have been asking for.

We’ve been using a broken group UI in WvW for 13 months. If we still can even form a 5 person group properly, I don’t expect changes to C&S anytime soon.

Idk allowing color change has to be the easiest thing they could possibly do to appease us while they work on a “permanent solution”

This is the type of upgrade to the system we will likely be making, but it is not a short-term project. We feel commanders aren’t getting enough mileage out of the system as it is now and we’d like to make it much, much more robust.

I stand by my point. Leagues are coming. AR, DR, GoM, ET, and us at FC as well are going to start facing insurmountable odds week-in and week-out.

We can all do our best to find niches of enjoyment within the game, or we can combine our collective strategies and numbers into a viable, competitive force capable of fighting for a respectable finish in the silver league.

Sure you can have your own fun for awhile ignoring PPT etc, but when there’s an actual competition going on the satisfaction and rewards are immeasurably greater.

If we were able to land 4-5 total guild transfers I am confident we could rise to 4th place in the league. If Kaineng is bleeding like it sounds we could knock them out of the top 3 where it would then be YB, IoJ, and us.

From there it’s a mystery how it would play out, but that would be a few awesome months!!! After that who cares if the game isn’t fundamentally fixed by then a lot of us will be quitting anyway. If it is fixed then who cares its fixed!!

i disagree. each side of EB has 2 places they can treb SMC from. north side just happens to be the outer keep wall instead of ogrewatch. the outer wall were trebs can be placed are not inside the gate they are actually EASIER to kill than trebs inside a tower. an elementalist can ride the lightning off the nearby cliff and land right on the wall where the trebs are – they aren’t safe. I’d rather treb from Anz lord’s room personally.

Greatly reduced lag caused by the stat calculation

A place for 1v1, XvX, etc if you enjoy that sort of thing

Harder to attack enemy territory because they’re buffed and to take the buff away you have to split up your forces

Anet – as far as maximum WvW benefit with minimum effort, a commander system upgrade is hands down what you should be looking at. Let me suggest some fresh ideas to hopefully spark renewed interest in the subject:

1. Let people buy colors for their tag with badges (similar to buying dye for your armor).

2. Sell a “General” tag for 50g.

Just think of the strategic coordination options if a commander has an appointed general!!!

3. Everyone with a commander tag or who purchases one gets two 1-time consumables. If you use this consumable while in a squad, 1 “vote” goes to the squad commander (cannot use it for yourself). As commanders accumulate more votes they can get cooler icons, fancier titles, etc. I imagine someone eventually reaching 100 votes (5,000 gold worth of commander tags) and becoming the first Legendary Commander with a really awesome icon!!

The amount of resources to make this happen pales in comparison to creating a whole new map and mechanic system, yet the benefits are great, universal and risk-free.

Any chance we can move this up on the priority list since we’ve been asking for something since launch?

IF THE BL BUFF WAS NOT ACROSS ALL MAPS

A) it would hugely reduce lag issues its causing

B) it would make infinitely more sense. You get bloodlust for the map you hold. Nobody gets bloodlust in EB. That would make it more difficult to enter enemy territory and cap their stuff because they’d be fighting with the buff, and to take the buff away and hold it you’d have to split up forces.

also, those people who enjoy “fair” 1v1 or XvX fights in open map could still find un-buffed (EB) places to do so.

I think almost everyone would be happy.

Regarding the changes

In the positive

  1. Roaming has become way more fun
  2. Adding stat bonus as a reward is a good step forward
  3. Added incentive to WvWvW
  4. Use of heights as strategy was factored in during the map design
  5. Greatly increased the need for everyone on that particular map to work in unison
  6. Surprise tactics by rushing on said occupied point creates anticipatory jitters
  7. Some use of water combat is still in-play
  8. Felt like I was playing in an entirely new map. It was a good feeling for the stalemate feeling we had in the BL.

In the negative

  1. Roaming has become harder for duos or singles
  2. Stat Bonus is too much. 25 would be better than 50.
  3. Increased Lag reported by all players
  4. falling off the map into unintended areas ,i.e. map glitch
  5. 3 out of 5 cap points should be increased to 4 out of 5 to balance reward and sacrifice

Overall, I think the WvWvW team are heading in the right direction.

kitten your overflow BS I wait for an HOUR for him to spawn coordinating with everyone, get kicked from the kitten fight, queue back up, FIGHTING him in overflow, get the message I can travel back (to the one we’re doing well in) immediately click on it and put BACK into another overflow where there is no Tequatl.

So I fought him twice and still didn’t even get the kittening daily for trying. kitten you Anet I have more important kitten to do with my time. Peace.

I dont know whats been talked about here but I wanna clarify something to myself. Help me understand this are the leagues not being divided into 2 US and 3 EU pools? Does that not mean that each pool has its own winner (gold, sivler and bronze winners)?

If the above is correct does it not mean again that many high tier server guilds which are also high pop will consider moving to low tier servers e.g. like in Eu servers best coverage is brought by Vizunah Square and SFR, Desolation, Elona Reach, Piken Square who are the competitors may consider going to lower tier servers and take a chance at getting gold position rather than going to compete vizunah where they already know they will loose?

I have seen WSR (White Side ridge) population go from medium to high just after the announcement of leagues. this how I see it is a smart move from Anet as populations will be more balanced out after these league matches. Or else I have not understood the question here at all and am blabbing about something I dont get. hehe

It will shift the same imbalance. Some gold league servers will tank and lose players as they move to tier 1 and players from all around the tiers will move to rank 12 server (top of silver league). anyone outside of ranks 1-2 (maybe 3) and 12’ish will lose more than they gain. Then 12 will move to gold league after season 1 and more transfers will commence.

—> Your Home/PvE server is no longer connected to your WvW server
—> A WvW-only transfer is now available for 50% gem cost of a full transfer
—> WvW-only transfers are not available to tier 1 servers and are free to tier 8 servers.
—> WvW-only transfers will take effect upon the first time you log into WvW after weekly reset (any transfers made after 5pm PST Friday will not take effect until the following Friday reset).
—> Full server transfers at full gem cost are still immediate – this has not changed.
—> Your world bonuses (crafting, magic find, etc) are still tied to your Home/PvE server and not your WvW server.
—> Those with separate WvW and home servers can only guest on 1 other server per week instead of 2. In other words, you can still only enter 3 total servers per week.
—> WvW season rewards are still determined by the first WvW server you log into after the season begins.

Now you can try out other servers for 50% the cost AND you don’t have to leave your PvE friends / Guildies!!

Expected result:

—> Anet wins as their transfer revenue goes up
—> We win as our matches become far more interesting
—> I’m a hero for suggesting it (lol)

If you believe the reason that guilds and WvW players are stacking T1 instead of lower servers is because of cost….you are definitely mistaken…it has nothing to do with cost.

Fact of the matter is there is ZERO incentive to go to a less populated server. The only reason I could see would be to try and avoid queue times during NA prime or whatever time slot you play in for roaming purposes…as far as roaming goes..it can be done on any server anyway so more than likely they will stay where their friends are…

As for WvW guilds and large groups….they want to fight other large groups…they also don’t want to bear the burden of carrying the server themselves….so where is the best place to go, where coverage is balanced and guild fights and large groups are abundant….T1…a lot of people have left so there have been coverage openings in T1 (which i suspect will be filled by the time the leagues come around)…the main point is…WvW population is declining due to stagnation, boredom and burnout…as this continues to happen and servers become more ghost towns…any organized groups remaining will look elsewhere to find competitive play…

right, so the people in dying servers who are only still there because their friends and guilds are there will now be able to abandon their WvW server and stay part of their community.

the imbalance will get much worse and instead of waiting 6 months for this to happen it will come quickly and force a resolution instead of Anet continuously saying they “need more time to look at the numbers”
