The potential for high slow up-time is probably the biggest issue.

Slow just makes it harder for people to do anything; heal/cleanse/ even just return fire. Its a powerful effect so it shouldn’t be something that can be maintained. You can play around it, but in team fights its almost certainly a death sentence unless you have access to only the best escape tools.

But to get that uptime you have to maintain squishness. So it makes you easy to kill.

So I thank you for this build to start me off. I have since evolved what you started with to the following:

Traits
Dueling: Duelist’s Discipline, Blinding Dissipation, Deceptive Evasion
Inspiration: Feedback, Restorative illusions, Illusionary Inspiration
Chrono: Time Catches Up, Illusionary Reversion, Chronophantasm

Weapons
Sword/Pistol
Sceptre/Shield

Utilities
Signet of the Ether, Blink or Decoy or Well of Calamity, Well of Action, Signet of Inspiration, Gravity Well or Time Warp

My openings are generally Full Blocks (shield 4*2, scepter 2) Continuum Split followed Immediately by Distortion, or on a less aggressive opponent Pistol 4, Pistol 5, Signet of the Ether, Pistol 4, Sword 3, then double shatters.

This generates tons of shatters, which means tons of shatter goodness.

Tons of defense, and good damage. Having decent matches in WvW and Unranked. I generally save my Elite and wells for Continuum Split.

I feel SUPER squishy as a Chronomancer, way less survival than with Staff/Sceptre/Torch Mesmer.

You can see there are a couple of cases where scepter auto-attack adds a useful clone for shattering.

That’s similar to what I’ve been doing as well. Using the Sceptre 1 clone with a double dodge to generate 3 for a shatter. Or summoning my phantasm and then waiting till the third clone to shatter.

I get great uses out of my phantasms, but can’t seem to find a great reason to let scepter 1 generate illusions.

I love the 2 and 3 on scepter, but does anyone have any situation where scepter 1 doesn’t suck?

I feel like ANET just doesn’t want new players to go into dungeons, getting turned off by dungeon running community. Once more and more level-80-only expacs come out everything pre-80 will basically be a tutorial.

While that may be true, I just can’t believe it. Has Anet ever explained why they feel dungeons need to be as hard as they are on a fresh level 35? (first explorable)

I would love to know the % of the population who have never ran a dungeon, or only done dungeons a few times and then never went back to do them because of the dungeon community/dungeon difficulty.

and you´d make a better part of that community? Do you actually read what you write? You dislike “running with noobs”, slowing you down. Not to mention how that is rather ironic regarding your lamenting of the 80s only axiom, it pretty much shows what kind of dungeon player you yourself would be if you were in a position of power/competence.

To answer your question: probably a large percentage because of difficulty, though in my opinion that speaks rather against average player skill in GW2 than dungeon difficulty. Even in dungeons the game is a snoozefest for any player of modest gaming skill.

I actually take the time to explain to people and ensure the dungeon goes through to completion. Your assumption is wrong. But as veteran mmo player I can recognize barrier the dungeons represent. If Anet plans on lowering the barrier to entry with the expansion, with the current dungeon community that wants Max level characters (I’m often the only one with patience to run noobs) how are new players going to do dungeons? Do they need to be so difficult?

Sometimes getting my dailies done while leveling can be impossible, because all the groups in the LFG tool are only looking for 80s, or you’re running with noobs so the entire dungeon takes very long.

Why is this a thing? Do dungeons need to be as difficult as they are?

This is brilliant game design! Let the people who want to throw a kitten load (yes I typed the word kitten) of money at the game to have whatever they want do so. Their willing sacrifice just funnels money at a company that I want to succeed so that company can keep building more content in a game I don’t have to pay a sub fee for.

Actually people that are going to buy gold are generally going to do so from a gold selling site. This doesn’t promote the game at all. Most gold selling sites are cheaper than Gem Conversion (significantly).

Buying gold, and 4 hours later you’ve got a max level toon, with full exotic gear… You can then go into WvW.

Isn’t this only slightly ridiculous. Giving people who buy the gold this advantage?

static discharge glass cannon build is the best burst build ive played out of the 5 geared 80’s i have…imo better then thief/war/mes

using goggles/battering ram/wrench with it

tip: use goggles right after overcharged shot and it breaks the self kb instantly

My engineer is my full exotic power, crit and crit damage character…warrior is not even full glass cannon and he crits with a rifle a LOT harder than engineer with a explosive, firearms, tool build. I am using goggles, battering ram and wrench and I dont hit anywhere NEAR what a rifle, axe, GS warrior does….and my mesmer who is a toughness vit gear and build can do more damage and last a lot longer and brings a lot more utility to the group.

Your warrior might crit harder, but then has almost nothing in the way of defence like an engineer.

Your rifle warrior lines up kill shot, last minute I have the choice of reflecting it back in his/her face, simply blocking it with shield #5, or Tool Kit #4. Warriors catch me off guard, sure they tear me up, but mostly they don’t.

If a class is hard to play then mastering it should let you do things others can’t or give a slight edge so all the effort pays off. The issue is that the easy to play face roll classes still outperform you as an engi whereas an engineer that is played perfectly and the person knows what they are doing still only manages to do alright and not even close to as good as a warrior spamming hundred blades/kill shots.

The thing is, the class can do all those things. Well played Engineers are nigh unbeatable. Have you seen the Tankcat videos or are people all pretending they don’t exist?

The engineer is awesome, but you have to admit that 30% is a huge nerf to an auto attack for grenades.

The BIGGEST problem we have with engineers right now, is that a lot of traits and skills are broken and aren’t functioning together as they’re supposed to, so we are performing at a much lower capacity. Instead of modifying what Engineers are capable of, how about we get what they were originally intended to do, to work.

Grenades haven’t been my main attack, in forever. So the nerf is meaningless to me. I use EG/TK/FT ankittenraited for it ( build ) The fact that we aren’t even at full capacity, well we’ll be OP when they “fix” us.

Right now, engineers are like the Death Star, even at partial power pretty freaking amazing.

Just because you’re not good at the class, doesn’t mean the class is bad.

The developers have known for over a year the problems that WvW would have, and is having. Over a year. The Commander issues, maybe 6-8 monts, but they’ve known about it all for a very long time.

It just doesn’t seem like they are taking WvW Seriously, at all. Lack of Commander tools is a huge issue. I mean really it’s just horrible implementation. They wanted the game to be casual friendly, but are expecting people to scoop ice cream with a knife.

Also, the cost to WvW is unreasonable compared to PvE. There is no cost associated with doing events. In Orr you can do temple events, do mass zone events, and spend nothing other than repair bills and get massive rewards.

In WvW this is not the case, and they’ve known about it for a very long time. They just aren’t respecting the player base. This is why it’s important to have experienced gamers working for your company. I know Izzy is good, and experienced, but I’m not so sure about Habib. He needs to actually dedicate some serious personal time to WvW.

I’ve learned the enigeer class inside and out. I also play with a razer nostromo game pad, razer naga mouse, and razer deathstalker keyboard. I have every single key mapped out which allows me to never have to lift my hand from wasd (which is at my thumb) to hit any keybinding and have every single keybinding memorized from muscle memory. I control F1-F4 with my right hand on the mouse, and 1-0 with my left fingers (wasd jump and tab are all with my thunb).

With that said, if I take a day off playing the engineer I can visibly see my performance decrease.

I can take 2 months off playing a thief/warrior and it is as if I never left the class.

So yes, the engineer is exponentially more complicated, and it requires perfect execution to be 80% of what can be done on the top tier classes.

I still play the engineer (almost 700 hours played), but please don’t come to these boards and tell people that balance is hard so it is ok that the engineer player has too do WAY more to get significantly less.

Just because you do something a lot, doesn’t mean you do it well. (the following is an example, not an insult) Just because you flip burgers all day, doesn’t make you a Chef.

I play engineer well. I have just as much success with engineer as I do with my mesmer and thief. Sure if I take a break there’s a learning curve, but it’s quickly back up to 100%.

Because you can only play at 80% doesn’t mean the engineer class is bad, you’re just not as good with engineer as you are with the other classes.

It’s not the professions fault. Honestly it’s not. The engineer is just as capable as playing at top level, it just requires more skill. When you get that skill you’ll rock face.

I have a fully geared out level 80 thief. A fully geared out level 80 mesmer. Both are faceroll easy in wvw. I love my engineer, because it requires more thought. I actually have to think intstead of just stack up 25 bleeds on a person, or 15 confusion stacks and watch them die.

This is exactly my point. You like engineer because it is inferior to other classes, which is a completely valid reason to like the profession.

If you want a challenge by playing an inferior class, look no further than engineer.

If you want a class that is on par with the other elite classes, do not roll an engineer.

You’re misinterrpretting my post. I’m not saying Engineer is inferior. I still get the same results, I just have more options to get those results. On my thief I basically just spam a few moves. My engineer gives me way more options to do the same thing.

It takes way more swapping, but I am still wrecking people. The effort is greater, but engineer is in no way an inferior class.

In my opinion the only real difference between thief and engineer as far as results go, is my thief is superior at running away. (Honestly my thief rarely ever dies once I decide to run)

Engineer will always have the potential to be the most OP class because it brings SO much. The developers have to be careful with the class because of this. They will never be able to account for all the combos players will come up with.

I am glad they are taking their time. Do you really want Engineer to be flooded with bad players because it’s OP?

Personally I don’t. I’m 100% awesome with how engineers are playing right now, and the developers should take their time with tweaking engineers. (honestly fix the bugs, then work on the tweaks).

On my engineer, it’s like playing speed chess. Attacking/defending, where there is actually an ebb and flow in each 1v1 or 1v2.

The thing is, I still win most of my fights. Sure if a mesmer specifically built for a moa burst jumps me, i’m going to die, just like anyone else, most players I am killing, chasing off, or tanking till more peopel show up.

Engineer is fine as is and is getting better with patches. If you want easy, obviously engineer is not the class for you. I honestly hope I don’t ever have to go through what I do on my thief on my engineer. Playing a thief is boring if you’re good. Engineer, is always exciting.

If light field removed conditions on blast and leap attacks, it would be alright. Retaliation isn’t a particularly great boon anymore, especially in PvE where mobs hit relatively slowly. Unless you’re running with classes who are shooting ranged projectiles, IMO light fields aren’t that great.

Now, if this was a water field, it would be great as-is.

The great thing about a light field is that its blast finisher is Area Retaliation. And Engineers have plentiful blast finishers.

3s AoE retaliation versus 1.2k AoE healing per blast.

I’m not sure there’s a debate here, merely pointing out how one dwarfs the other.

Given how retaliation scales and stacks duration and engineers can trivially drop 2-4 blast finishers in rapid succession, I’m actually in favor of the retaliation. It’s pretty rare to both need to suddenly heal 5k and have the capacity to coordinate it with all cooldowns up. Whereas big retaliation is something that is always useful for the group unless you’re totally braindead.

I’m not saying a water field in our arsenal woudn’t be nice, but a light field shouldn’t be underestimated.

How many blast finishers does the average Engineer actually run with?

A huge problem with turrets is that their strength does not match the cool down. They should be much stronger for the cool down they are given.

This is why I am suggesting controlling them with cast times. Immediate redeployment with a cast time, at least helps increase their mobility.

If they added a cast time then they could also add a function to the tool kit that if you have the tool kit equipped it reduces turret deployment by a certain %

Yeah turret engineer = free kill, how’s that good game design?
I actually know the answer to this though. The turrets are the way they are because of spvp. If they make turrets too strong, then engineers would have the advantage defending points. So engineers in the rest of the game have to suffer, because of spvp.

Fix for Turrets:
Cooldowns only when destroyed. If you pick it up, then you can put it right back down again… HOWEVER… you can control them with cast times. Rifle turret can have a 1.5sec cast time, Rocket turret could have a 5 second cast time. (think mantra for mesmers).

With WvW obviously taking a back seat to most of the rest of the game with the player migration between servers and to other games do you still care if your server wins?

I love logging into wvw, and just running around with a group murdering all the things, taking whatever targets of opportunity present themselves, camping the jumping puzzles, or just generally playing for personal fun, rather than server victory.

Do you still care if your server wins? Why or why not?
