the rewards are only cosmetic
This is the absolute BEST thing about GW2 PvP. Gear grind in PvP is one of the dumbest things ever.
I agree. It doesn’t bother me at all. But the OP was discussing why people aren’t as into it. That’s one of the reasons I’ve heard often. That and, along the same vein, the fact that it has very little impact on PvE outside of titles. (Again, this doesn’t really bother me either.)
Lots of things deter people for playing SPvP. The format is repetitive, the rewards are only cosmetic, the community is not always pleasant, the new players tend to be overwhelmed fast by poor matchmaking, very little variety in maps.
Just a few of the reasons.
Complete data…. I guess you mean mostly complete or more complete than in reality. Unless you guys keep up with off market trading, which I suppose you can. But how do you sort legitimate trades from gold sellers moving gold or players shifting funds. I’d be interested to hear more about your process. Seems like it’d be very cool to explore. Anyway, economics has rigor behind it. It’s not just magic.
The question of whether to undercut or not is basically the prisoner’s dilemma. It’s very well know.
Yeah, but it was a high value/ low traffic item. Their risk was minimal. This tactic would never work on something that had a lot of movement like, say, mithril.
Also, it costs a potential buyer nothing to play a buy order. You get all of your cash back. All the taxes are on the seller. (Granted, if they had any sense you’d be paying for the taxes indirectly as an increase in the buy price.)
A general convention would be better. No reason to limit it to guild leaders the dev happens to be aware of.
When you place a buy order, you are stating that you are willing to pay X money for Y item(s). The buy order is a contract of demand for that item.
Academically; from your perspective it shouldn’t be relative, you stated you were willing to pay X for Y and were successful. There is no such thing as false demand, because at any point while those orders exist they can be filled.
So it’s a contract that you have the option to pull your money out of at any time before the transfer occurs. That leaves it open to manipulation, does it not? These orders could be used to make it seem as if there are more potential buyers than there really are. It could be used to present the player, like our topic creator, with an unrealistic view of demand for that good. It gives him imperfect information about the demand of the product. This creates inefficiency, does it not?
It’s basically like having a planted buyer in an auction to shore up bids. The demand isn’t really there, because these planted bidders are employed by the auction house. If they do happen to win the bid, they just don’t get a sale. No money changes hands. But they can make it seem as if the item is more valued by the buying population. They give the illusion of demand in that sense.
All that being said, this isn’t really my field, so I’m reluctant to comment at all. I could be totally wrong.
Multiplication is a distributive operation over addition. So go for it.
This could easily be fixed. Just put a daily limit on the number of sell and buy orders you can place for a single item. Or just make it so you can’t put a buy order in for an item you own. Or make it so you can view who placed the buy orders and who placed the item for sale at least.

IMHO time warp either needs to:
- Apply to friends an foes in it
- Apply the +50% damage taken debuff
- Only work for the mesmer
Two of those points contradict.
There are way more new people than veterans. If you run a dungeon pug a lot, you end up with a lot of newbies. I don’t mind teaching, but some days I just want a quick run and to get in and out. The day teaching newbies starts giving me gold for my legendary , you can all queue up and I’ll teach every last one of you.
It has been demonstrated that mesmer has more LoS issues than most classes. None of our attacks can hit anything on the top of a wall accept for Chaos Storm (Meh damage, mainly a defensive tool), mind stab (lol, pitiful), and mirror blade (occasionally). But nothing is done about it because, well, we’re mesmers. Everyone is too busy crying to have us nerfed into the ground to acknowledge our problems.
I don’t even siege anymore. I just roam and take camps. Do I get less XP, karma, and cash? Yeah. Should I? Of course, I’ve got portal.
(edited by SteepledHat.1345)
Two side notes to the remarks of an above poster. Mes isn’t the only class with a pull. Thieves can’t infiltrate keeps. Just some glaring points I felt should be addressed.
Next you’ll hear call for mesmer clones to be removed. This is just getting silly.
A mesmer nerf thread on the SPvP forum? Wow, nice to see something new for a change.
Why dont we just delete the whole mesmer class you scrubs.
I fail to see a downside to this suggestion.
Add thieves and you have the greatest, bravest patch in mmo history.
^What most of the SPvP forums wants. All this whining is nothing but an attempt to unmake the mesmer.
Lmao, you make a lot of assumptions. I’m saying they aren’t what Anet said they would be. Your real world situation should have now bearing on in game achievements. This game isn’t buy to win and getting a legendary is part of winning.
what i want:
1. pvp arenas
2. open world pvp. i don’t know how this would work, but i really love the concept of questing whilst being able to be attacked at any time.
i think if they created a map with open pvp minus the structure of wvwvw would be amazing. for example, they could create a map where players fight each other and there could be spawns of chests that contain loot or something. i think that would be really fun. it wouldn’t have the zerg of wvwvw as much i don’t think.
Yeah, we really need an area where a guild can set up to farm solo players while they quest. I feel like everyone involved will enjoy this.
right cuz wut we REALLY want is to run in a circle killing npc’s and random zerg vs zerg events
Break from the zerg sometime in WvW, it’s way more fun that way. There are many other potential PvP modes that aren’t as fail as the current SPvP format. None of them should be a ganker’s paradise.

sorry but trash talk comes with competition. if you cant stand the heat get out of the kitchen
Look at the arrogance and ego embodied in this post. Why should I respect the “top” players who hold such a conceited and impolite view of things?
Also, if “attacking an opponent’s theory” is a form of trash talking, Socrates must have been the biggest “trash talker” that ever lived.
He was, and you see how he ended up. Watch out all you “pros.” :P
Lol, most of this trash talk comes from people who are compensating for an failing aspect of their life with gaming. That’s what I think anyway, I mean why rip into someone like they do? If you’re confident you wouldn’t feel the need.

Most common misconception:
A legendary is supposed to be the capstone of guild wars 2. A player with a legendary is supposed to have demonstrated experience in WvW and PvE by completing the entire world map, diving into one of the games dungeons, and fighting it out in WvW for 500 badges of honor.
^None of the above is true now. So glad that you can just up and buy one.
“When it’s ready.”
That’s what they normally say about most things.
Well, if you wanted to slow the rate at which precursors entered the market you could put some pre-reqs on the quest to obtain them. Perhaps world completion and the possession of all other required materials. That would help to maintain their exclusivity. The price would still fall, and it should, but it would be more gradual and much less than if everyone playing could just walk into the quest for a precursor with little previous effort. It would work to limit it to those already working on a legendary. (The people that actually want the precursors, rather than marketeers.)
Lol, you mean zerglets? Running with the horde is overrated. You don’t realize it, but you need those solo/small group folks.
From reading the responses we get from the Devs, I get the impression something isn’t a ban able exploit unless it’s done hundreds of times. I strongly suspect the green karma items to rare to ectos is an exploit but until people are doing it in quantity ANet won’t react. I wish they would put down rules after a ban episode as to what exactly is forbidden rather than just restating general guidelines.
It’s a highly inefficent process due to the nature of the forge. I thought about it in the past, at the time, you’d be luck to get a gold off of 100K karma.
You done? That caps was unnecessary. Mesmer burst is meh when you compare it to a warrior, guardian, and thief. I don’t see how my auto attack vs the auto attack of a guardian in knight’s rares would be a poor basis. If anything, it shows that the damage is probably higher in SPvP. I used it as an example because it’s the only person I’ve had the chance to stare at the screen while they play. She doesn’t SPvP because of people that yell in all caps and act silly. Can’t say I blame her.
Look, you are in the Structured PvP forum, you are then using your knowledge from PvE to take part in a discussion on balance in PvP. You obviously are not aware of the many other considerations that come into play during PvP which affects the potential DPS output of other classes. For example, you mention warrior burst, warrior burst in PvP is considered strong but extremely situational. While some teams run warriors, many do not because good players are able to respond to warrior burst fairly well. Mesmers can put together very strong combos that allow them to easily burst their opponent on relatively short cooldowns.
Comparing auto attack damage as a basis for damage output between a guardian and a mesmer is even more laughable. You really don’t have the depth of knowledge to be contributing to a balance thread for PvP.
I appreciate your dismissive and condescending tone! My point was that the GS auto attack on and under geared guard can match the damage of mes “burst”. That’s the point of my remark. Have fun feeling superior.
(edited by SteepledHat.1345)
What? Who tries to duel at spawn. I don’t even arrange them. I just do my supply runs and look for those few who aren’t afraid to fight alone. Forgive me for not wanting to auto attack in a zerg.
I’ve said it many times. Every WvW player should be able to flip a camp by his or her self. A camp with 1 to no invades in it. That’s the bare minimum of ability that needs to be developed. That way, one or two players can go around and flip camps. Something that is massively important to all those zerglets trying to take forts and keeps. It distracts the enemy and it dampens their supply rate.

Mod didn’t close this thread? Should at least closed it if they knew it was a bannable offense. Freaking Anet.
I’m inclined to agree. What the heck happened there?
I’m sorry. What could possibly have driven you to not conduct yourself with dignity and kindness? There’s never a reason to be rude.
This is a game, and no one should have to deal with someone spewing obscenity at them censored or not.
I bought this game, I have the right to talk about BBC’s.
I’m gonna guess the devs say no. Anyway, take care.

Mesmer doesn’t deal incredible burst damage anymore. We’re just about meh when it comes to damage. (For those of us that didn’t use the “exploit” we were always meh.) I fight in dungeons with my wife who plays a guard and watch as her auto attack nearly equals my mw at 9 might stacks. Just saying.
Anyway, game is super unbalanced. Either adapt or go play one of the classes that everyone feels are uber.
No, but cause context is half of what makes offensive language offensive. Saying something negative about or at another player is much worse than saying something in general. So even if you’re seeing **** you could still be offending someone.
Essentialy, Iduelist is a weaker version of 100 blades that the target can dodge to prevent all hits from happening. If that fails, dodge again to prevent damage. If that fails, they at least don’t have to worry about a sigil triggering.
GW2 balance when you let SPvP whiners dictate your decisions.
Course not, too many zerglets in WvW.
Sorry Lordyux, you want it all and not give up anything for it.. You want passive run speed, swiftness, our invis, our clones, our blink etc etc etc..
Basically you want to be op’ed , FOTM and EZmode… We are not..
Sorry man, but we are 100% fine in our mobility choices..
You want to have a run buff for no reason. You ignore all the other things we have..
Lol, you want Necro minions for their run buff?? You want rangers pet for their run buffs?
Lordryux, you are at the point of complaining to just complain… You want the old cake and eat it too.
Thief has everything you listed but the clones….
Anet says mesmer phantasams and clones are just regular attacks it follows…
Please provide the source of this quote. I have a nagging feeling that you’ve taken a quote out of context.
Regardless, you’re comparing a Warrior’s direct attack to – what is essentially – a pet’s attack. Apples and Omnomberries.
I believe it was taken from this statement:
“Illusionary Duelist, Phantasmal Swordsman, Phantasmal Mage, Phantasmal Defender, Phantasmal Disenchanter, Phantasmal Rogue, Phantasmal Warlock, Illusionary Mariner, Illusionary Whaler, Phantasmal Berserker, and Phantasmal Warden: These skills must now be cast in line-of-sight of the target. These skills now behave as normal attacks that the mesmer must connect in order to summon the phantasm, and they will fail if the mesmer is blind or the ability is cast on an invulnerable target.”
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/info/news/Game-Update-Notes-November-15-2012/744278
Yep, that’s one of the things that lead me to this conclusion. Plus assorted other things devs have done and said. But this is more than enough.
Mesmer phantasam summons are blocked by blind/dodge/etc because they’re normal attacks. That’s why my duelist’s unload attack can trigger a flame sigil…. oh wait.
Epic? What’s an epic? Anyway, this game is grindy enough as it is. Too much randomness in the process, the scavenger hunt shouldn’t be easy. It should be hard and that separates the playerbase. I want to work hard for my legendary, I just don’t want to toss a bunch of crap into a forge in LA. I want a legendary journey that lives up to it’s name. That’s why I want the change.
Whatever, not even I care anymore. I’m going to embrace every despicable part of this game. Flip some items, sell some dungeon slots, then use all the gold to buy my legendary. This is an epic journey!
Anet says mesmer phantasams and clones are just regular attacks it follows…
An attack by a phantasam is just an attack by a mesmer.
When a phantasam critical hits a mesmer critical hits.
So, sigils like the sigil of fire should trigger on phantasam criticals.
Does that make sense? I mean, a warrior can crit of 100 blades and trigger the sigil. So should a mesmer be able to crit off his duelist’s unload skill.
If you have an issue with this thought pattern, please don’t bash me. Help me improve it. Demonstrate why I’m wrong or how to make the argument more sound.
(edited by SteepledHat.1345)
I’ve been meaning to ask, where do you get all this awesome music?
Lots of people leaving SPvP. That’s why it’s empty except at peak hours. This mes nerf hasn’t turned me away, it’s just going to cause me to lose when I normally wouldn’t. GCD is ridiculous. But if it helps the bads feel better, that’s all that’s important. /sarcasm
Mirror blade is mainly about stacking vulnerability. The might you “might” get is a plus. :P
That is the one upside to this, they no longer have an excuse for when they lose. I was over in the SPvP forum and they were already talking about another mesmer “exploit”.
Well you know they have to come up for a reason they’re still losing to mesmers. It can’t just be that they’re a bad player. Mes has to have an exploit….
Everyone that keeps saying the GCD is temporary, have you seen anything said to that accord? I haven’t and I have no reason to think it will be changed. Please, realize this is the case and push for it to be changed back soon!
For the record, the .25s cooldown is a nerf. No more shatter 1, followed by shatter 4 to prevent damage from spamming thieves.
