To worship (idolize) the Sylvari for their physical form without regard for their spirituality would be shallow. Sylvani spirituality and morality are tied into the ventari tablet, the pale tree, and the dream of dreams, all of which are alien concepts to a follower of Melandru.

Spell effects obscuring bosses

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Stooperdale.3560

I’ve always found the burning effects obscured most of the boss and made it difficult to watch for boss animations. The difficulty was firstly that the graphics were obscured and was secondly that it was kitten the eyes. After the last patch I’ve found that the spell affects are even greater and there are many blue flares as well as flame effects. These have resulted in poorer graphics performance and bosses being entirely obscured in a haze of spell effects. Human model bosses such as the statue of dwayna can entirely obscured for 75% of the fight and not only is it painful to watch, it is impossible to spot any combat animations.

Please tone down the spell effects or give graphics options to remove them. This could be a game breaker for me. My graphics setting are already mostly low and I have good performance in game until I come to spell effects.

Ok, lets suppose she wants bigger weapons. Why? What is she going to do with future weapons that she can’t do with all her existing weapon expertise? Unbalanced Heal Skill

Stooperdale.3560

If there’s a new skill coming from this then the tower is probably permanent content. It might also suggest that this skill can be acquired solo or that the skill would never be needed by solo players.

If this skill is unique at removing a new toxin condition, as suggested elsewhere, then this skill might become a gate for new content. You wouldn’t be able to enter some new dungeons without this heal. It would be a bad sign to see that sort of gating in GW2.

Southsun is pretty chancy. If you go there daily to gather resources then you might see a guild going for the Karka sometime if you’re lucky. The orrian temples will depend upon how active your server is. On Gandara you can go malchor’s/cursed shore when the temples are contested you’ll probably see a temple event running or the pre-quest. If nobody is around you can start the pre-quest on your own and call for more people when it gets going.

Otherwise, join a guild and ask them about events. You could also guest to another server for a day to see if the problem is entirely due to your server.

Has the sticky post from this forum with this thief bugs been removed? I’m sure thieves would like to post new bugs but now we can’t see what has already been reported over the last 12 months.

The previous few posters are talking about movement glitches I think. This is a very important topic for thieves as we are meant to be a high mobility class that dodges, evades, and shadowsteps away from danger. We are very susceptible to movement failures. Dodge, evade, shadowstep, and shadow return can fatally fail to move the user at all over uneven ground, sometimes on pan flat surfaces too. These are not necessarily thief bugs but they are certainly poor game mechanics that cause a lot of bugs for thieves.

Ascended Gear Acquisition Needs Improvement!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Stooperdale.3560

It’s not the answer the original poster wants to hear, but ascended weapons are for the people who put a lot of time into the game. They are not meant to be there for everyone. The fact that some people say they are easy to get only shows the big disparity in currency collection between casual and hardcore players.

I suppose the argument still goes that casual players can do everything in the game. If you want to run dungeons, do events, WvW, or anything else then you can do it fine in exotic gear. The top end rewards are out of reach but that is probably true in other MMOs as well. At least in GW2 you can do everything even if you can’t get everything.

Aether Tech, what is it and how does it work?

in Lore

Stooperdale.3560

Scarlet is supposed to have studied every race’s weaponry so can make anything, which is unfortunate from a lore perspective. She studied every branch of asura technology so she can presumably make anything the asura can. She seems to have four separate forces that are equipped separately – aetherblades, molten alliance, steam creatures, clockworks.

The aetherblades are electricity based but don’t have the wind powers of an elementalist. The strikers and taskmasters look like trained magic users. We don’t know if Scarlet has trained these people, given them electric gadgets, or whether the aetherblades existed with a casting tradition before Scarlet (unlikely). The rest of the aetherblade soldiers are similar to thieves, guardians, warriors, engineers. The airships can carry cannons but we haven’t seen them used much. Scarlet has some new portal tech that can (conveniently) teleport the pirates anywhere the story needs them. We don’t know where the massive aetherblade army was recruited from as it seems implausible that fire and frost refuges or pirates generally could be recruited so successfully in secret.

I would never expect them to replace items lost from guild banks. GW2 has a very hands off policy for these matters. They generally let players sort out their own problems.

Other games can have a lot support contact and replace items ‘no questions asked’ even if you are just stupid enough to delete the things by accident. Those services tend to be available for monthly subscribers, something GW2 doesn’t have. Those games also tend to have a lot of idiots filing complaints to the support team all the time because they know they’ll get attention and it doesn’t necessarily make a game.

I don’t think you need greatsword and sword/dagger. Swap one of them out for something like axe/horn to give some variety and a ranged option. You’re putting a lot of pressure on yourself to run full melee with zerker gear in dungeons.

The spirits will either be safe or dead depending upon the enemies. If you need traits for spirits to last longer then they will probably die regardless. I’d suggest using other utilities and then swapping the spirits in when the time is right (which might be often but you can’t rely on that).

To the OP: going on a personal crusade to stop path selling is only going to cause yourself trouble. A number of your personal perceptions of the game are exactly that, personal, and are not shared by the wider community. This means you’ve picked the wrong battle at the wrong time. For the time being you’re probably better making good groups to complete dungeons with friendly people rather than worrying about exploiters, path sellers, or people who do both.

“I still don’t understand that Stooperdale. Ambush gives you a NPC thief who is very powerful, and Caltrops can be used WHILE in stealth and doesn’t take you out of it even when the enemies run into them. Leveling up my thief, I don’t see why they haven’t been using traps, they’re too good.”

Caltrops is not a trap but is a genuinely good utility without trait support. It is better than muddy ground. Shadow Trap, Ambush Trap, and Tripwire are all situationally useful, ambush trap can be used to level up, shadow trap is a stun breaker, but there is still absolutely nothing to be gained from a traps build. As you’ve spotted, very few thieves use traps and it isn’t because thieves are stupid, it’s because traps are just not good enough for general play. Both rangers and thieves don’t need four traps plus other trap-like skills as well, all competing for utility slots.

Criticism on a huge ranger issue

in Ranger

Posted by: Stooperdale.3560

Stooperdale.3560

I think a lot of the points right. There are a variety of problems in the design of traps and trait lines. It isn’t just rangers who suffer from this. Thieves are even less likely to run with two traps than a ranger. Other classes also have utilities that are generally not worth a slot because they are only balanced when used with supporting traits.

My personal opinion is that these issues should be fixed but would be overlooked if the ranger utilities had better overall design. These are well known issues. Too many utilities are static and defensive. Spirits really need to work faster and more reliably. Shouts and signets are tied into pet problems. Etc.

Once we finally see a jungle dragon storyline, it seems unlikely that the nightmare court will be entirely unrelated to the dragon. However the court do not need to be dragon minions. There could be many other explanations, such as the dragon being connected to the dream of dreams in a similar way to the Sylvari and subconsciously poisoning it with nightmare. Amongst the ‘what ifs’ you have some interesting concepts such as the jungle dragon fabricating nightmarish wyld hunts for the nightmare court in order to control them.

Destroy Shadow Trap Problem

Shadow Trap just seems to be a badly designed skill that is staggering from one broken state to another. If it ever becomes fit for purpose it would become abusive at the same time so I’ve no idea why the designers are persisting with it. The shadowstep design is too similar and simply better.

Thieves would be better suited with the stun breaker put onto a signet instead, allowing a rework of traps to make them good utilities in their own right.

I was very hopeful for this targeting change but it is still hopeless. I cannot fathom some of the targeting at all. You can seemingly have a melee weapon in your hands and auto-target a champion over 1500m away, which you could say is working as intended but is actually completely useless. You can also still have auto targeting pick up a mob off to the side of you at some distance instead of an enemy right in front of your nose (that you do hit as soon as you activate a frontal attack). The targeting of turret-like enemies still seems to go wrong as well. It seems incredible that this still goes wrong so often.

Thief's bad for dungeons?

in Thief

Posted by: Stooperdale.3560

Stooperdale.3560

It’s all a bunch of half truths. Yes you can get through dungeons unscathed with decent play when poor warriors are hitting the dirt. Yes warriors can get more out of the class with less effort. PuG tactics tend to be designed by heavy classes for heavy classes and everyone else suffers. And so on.

Yes you can do all the dungeons with a thief but you need to play a bit smarter than other classes. For the trash you can harness all your class defenses like blind and generally fight smart to keep yourself out of the crossfire. For bosses just time your dodges, use your weapon evades, and pick smart positions.

I’ll just point out that the Krait tend to build things from salvaged wreckage. They’ve had opportunity to cut down trees elsewhere but instead they make ugly towers of junk. As an undersea race they generally conquer the ocean and raid the land for slaves, so have no mechanical ability to construct siege engines.

The race that is well known for Krytan deforestation is the centaurs, although they are the most unlikely group to store their wood underwater. Perhaps the Scarlet connection is there again.

The best way to implement Ascended armor?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Stooperdale.3560

Stooperdale.3560

I would say no to ascended armor immediately.

If it does happen what would be the least damaging implementation? My guess
- same armor value as exotics
- a base +5 agony resistance
- no infusion slot
- normal rune slots
- no stats but a slot with a new token that would assign stats at exotic level
- jewelry crafting can make new tokens at an affordable cost (to change armor stats)
- armor can be acquired through ascended crafting or a fractal reward barter currency

The next question is whether it would be good to have a purpose to all this agony resistance. Should there be new content that is only accessible with high ar? Should there be new rewards available only to players with high ar? No. That breaks the game philosophy of open access for all players. It becomes a gear based gate on player achievement. The conclusion however is that all this agony resistance from armor is either (a) ultimately going to be unnecessary or (b) will provide a gear gate that excludes players without ascended gear.

I hope this helps."

The purpose of the stack is keep the mobs in a kill zone for maximum dps. It is not the purpose of the stack to group all the characters within the high damage aoe attacks from enemies. It is perfectly good play for squishy classes to break off from the stack as long the mobs remain in the kill zone.

Stacking isn’t an exploit. Moving so that dumb AI monsters follow you into a kill zone is not an exploit. Even moving into an area where some monsters reset, letting you kill the rest easily, is not an exploit. Fighting mobs in your chosen position is a basic tactic going back even to text based MMOs, if anyone remembers them.

Monsters and dungeons can however be designed so that players can’t easily abuse stacking, splitting, and skipping. It’s up to the designers to do that.

Ok, lets go back and rewrite a few things. Let’s say that the agitator in Southsun isn’t just some mysterious Sylvari and was instead someone connected to one of the characters, lets say he’s Ellen Kiel’s brother. Ellen follows orders to capture him and bring him back to Lion’s Arch. The consortium presses for his execution and Captain Magnus has to agree. At the Dragon Bash the aetherblade attack still takes place but the Kiels escape together to the hidden base. There can still be an investigation but this time players have to do something to uncover Mai Lin and find the hidden base. We go through the base with Jory or Kasmeer and at the end of the dungeon one of the Kiels is killed but Mai Lin and the other Kiel get away. This leaves two well known and fully motivated aetherblade captains as villains in Scarlet’s organization. Scarlet herself can then be introduced over the next couple of months.

Open world – Any class works since very few events (Tequatl maybe) have a high enough difficulty to make a difference. Thief is probably not the class to take for champ farming.
Dungeons – Fine. Can get everything done. Can use a variety of builds. Most groups won’t turn down one thief.
Fractals – Same as dungeons. More skill needed to hide thief weaknesses in high level fractals.

Heavy classes seem to deliver more for less and you need more in high end fractals. Speed runners like getting more reward for less work too.
