Some of the server pairings are incredibly dubious. My experiences so far;

  • Gunnar’s Hold+Fissure of Woe is numerically abysmal -GH never had good numbers and FoW has nearly no WvW players on it,
  • Far ShiverPeaks don’t need to be paired with anybody and they’ve got a very active UnderWorld on their side,
  • Augury Rock+Fort Ranik seem to be the equal of BB, so I guess that’s the bar we’re all trying to reach.

All offensive siege tactics need to go. The defensive minded ones like supply and radar are great additions that in some cases encourage fights. The offensive ones that basically OPs an entire maps fighting force needs to be eliminated.

I always said that it’s bad to give buffs to already dominant sides.

Maybe all the abilities need to have a limit – they can only work in an area around objectives you own? (perhaps the already existing area for keep buffs?)

Scoring option for "Night cappers"

A system like this might prevent run away matches and might be able to give the losing server a chance to recover after the weekend rush[..]

Thoughts?

WHile I do like the original idea a lot, the only way to make matches closer (IMO) would be to have the tick/score increase over the course of the matchup, so ticks/ppk or whatever is worth more the nearer we get to reset.

THIS way, you could recover from weekend rush and runaway matches. It also gives more meaning to the final few days and adds drama to the end of the matchup!

(in fairness, it was not my idea, I saw it on these forums years ago, too)

It’s even more depressing when good PvP players go to play WvW and think they’re clever killing clueless PvE players with godlike knowledge of the mechanics combined with fast fingers (or “skill” as they like to call it).

As a new player who has been trying to find his way into GW2 PvP (just opened a thread on this same subject), I fully agree with the OP and with Grimreaper.

Because I like the PvP maps and many of the aspects of the game, I am still here, but trying to learn the basics of sPvP while being punched around is a horrible experience. Imho, the complexity and reaction speed involved make it almost impossible to have any kind of fun or learning beyond the stress and the ignorance on what may be happening.

This is a great post and I believe it expresses the typical PvP experience.

Great games are fun to play and difficult to master, but mastery should NOT mean roflstomping everybody with little-to-no reaction needed. This is why I believe it’s important that spike damage be reduced and thus fights last longer, giving new players time to react (not easy when enemies spike from a stealthed position) and making fights more satisfying when a victory does come.

One of the things the developers got wrong:

  • Traits which allow abilities to do more damage when enemies are lower on health – this is the opposite of what should be happening. When enemies have high health you should do more damage, then as they get worn down, it becomes more difficult to finish them off.

Whenever I log onto to play PvP these days, it’s just a blowout.

Welcome to Esports, where “skilled play” is rewarded.
My opinion is that we have;

  • insane CC because of PvE breakbars
    combining with
  • unfettered damage spikes
    thus
  • no chance for counterplay

It’s a whopping mess.

In my opinion we need

  • shorter CCs
    and
  • lower damage across the board.
    HALVE it if necessary, we need longer fights
    Also
  • shadowsteps and stealth need to get intimate with the nerfbat – these are way, way, WAYHEYHEY too good at the moment!

It was implemented in order to provide strategic opportunities, but Arenanet clearly (judging by Mesmers and Thieves as well) don’t understand just how powerful invisibility is.

Why do you think trap-rune guardians are a thing?

There are ways they can be fair and fix the unbalanced passive scoring problems. They simply need to ditch the tick.

Then where is the incentive to recap anything when you are massively outnumbered? But of course, you have now moved on and never read this rebuttal, despite people typing it every time you make your suggestion ><

Because it’s a 24/7 game mode. One person’s time should not be more or less valuable than any others. It’s called standing for equality.

I’m calling bull on this. Even the most hardcore of MMOs has a mechanic for this.

And this is suppose to improve WvW? Sorry, I just don’t see it. If people don’t like losing their towers and keeps when they are not playing…they can stay up all night and fight it. Punishing people because their normal game time isn’t “primetime” would be poor game management. I think you’ll lose a lot of night people as players.

I think the MMO community would agree that Eve Online is the most hardcore of hardcore games. Even they have vulnerability windows on their structures.

The sides are actually even, Stephen Wilson* replied to a question I asked in a thread once to a question I asked regarding this same issue, because I too found it hard to believe sometimes that all sides were actually equal. But it has been confirmed, I will try to do some digging and find it.

Here was my question-

Many of us have been wondering for a very long time, are the map caps for each server actually equal for each map, dont have to give the actual number, but are they actually equal because sometimes….

Here was the reply-

The number of players allowed in per team all follow the same rules on all instances of each WvW map.
The numbers you see on the World Transfer screen are based on the number of players who have signed up for that world: what we call the membership count – which is not the same thing as the number of players active at any one time for that world.

Seems like population is pretty balanced now.

Yea but if you look at other EU matches this week, we are not even doing that badly against FSP.

Tier 1 is pretty close, and in Tier 6 both Viz and Drakkar can win it. But our match is next. The matches with Deso, Piken and Abaddon are all much more skewed.

But sure, let’s hope we get actually winnable opponets next match. Based on current standings, we should face Viz and Dz.

I think Dz are a decent match for us, but they need a lot more coverage if we get FoW as well.
I can’t remember Viz – I only remember the horrible time we faced them after we went up because we had Xaoc’s night crew -who capped and upgraded everything and in the day we got obliterated. Like FSP are doing right this minute, actually!

The problem is the on-demand stuff like fog and airships. If those on-demand things are too strong (like now) then they really make the game annoying to play.

I disagree that they are currently too strong. Alone, they aren’t good enough to prevent a group (of any outnumbering size) from capping a structure, but they may delay capture until reinforcements arrive. On their own they don’t swing the balance – it’s only with a significant number of defenders that they do.

This is why I think they are fine as-is.

I’m disappointed that the defensive buffs are being reduced.
Chilling Fog and Airship were supposed to help defend the objectives, and they do. It’s not as if they are cheap to make!
I think Arenanet are making an error here: making their own content obsolete.

I believe it would be best if the players get weekly rewards as follows:
1st – 3 Chests as now
2nd – 2 Chests as now and 1 materials chest containing something for scribing upgrades
3rd – 1 Chest as now and 2 materials chests containing something for scribing upgrades

The worse you do, the more you are empowered to do better next time. With World-Linking, Arenanet have begun to put some emphasis even matchups and hopefully the above gesture would indicate a willingness to do so even more in future!

Alpine Borderlands needs to be prio #1

All Anet has to do is bring back Alpine then see how many players in all tiers play the BL’s 24/7 for 1 week. then everybody know the answer.

The answer will be the same as now. 1 scout will sit in each keep (if you’re lucky) and then when a blob attacks, they will call EB for the zerg. That’s all Alpine was ever about.

During prime time, a few guilds will roam about on the south of the map looking for a fight, and will attack a keep when there’s no enemies. Just like on Desert maps now.

Alpine is not some magical map where everything is wonderful and sparkly. I think a lot of these forumwarriors are looking at things through rose-tinted specs.

Siege Troll Discussion

Put the character’s name on it.

If you see X’s Trebuchet Build Site when everyone’s putting down Flame Rams, you’ll know exactly who’s responsible.

Have a report function specifically for this issue, get X reports in Y amount of time, and you get a cooldown period where you can’t deploy siege. You can still build and operate siege normally. You just can’t deploy it.

THIS! Put the name of who deployed the siege weapon on the siege weapon, no matter how long it lives their name should be on it.
Get a bunch of reports and bam, they cannot deploy siege (the entire account) for x amount of time… preferably in the 24h per infraction level. Anything less and frankly you aren’t actually going to cause any effect.

A new catch with the base game being free? Free accounts cannot deploy siege. Gotta buy the box. You solve another problem here.

Seems reasonable. I also don’t understand why an in-game poll couldn’t get someone banned from deploying siege for a few hours.

World pride could be boosted by having a World Emblem competition.

World Emblems could be the default flag for towers where the majority of participants were from that world (or if someone from a specific world claims the objective for the world, rather than a guild).

Population-wise it seems somewhat imbalanced at the moment.

We’ll have to see at the end of the week though, since Friday evenings are usually a bad indicator of the match over the rest of the week.

One word:

Elitism.

And this is why the game, which prospered so much at launch, didn’t feature any kind of “elite” or arbitrarily “difficult” content. And also part of why, HoT, an expansion featured as pleasing the “hardcore” crowd has failed in the eyes of a bulk majority of players when looking at sheer numbers.

Strictly speaking, not many people care. And those that do are likely too exclusive to not care about anyone not involved in their personal affairs.

Why learn to do raids in GW2 when WoW does it better and has a wealth of willing participants?

Personally, I did my raiding 10 years ago. It felt a lot like work and I’m no longer interested in doing a job when I get home.

Yea, I keep hearing this but nobody has said it’s been confirmed which leads me to believe it’s just speculation.

Merged servers is frankly be the worst possible way to handle the WvW population issue as it only solves symptoms and not the actual underlying problems.
