There is a bit of discussion about EotM not being “real” WvW, and for me, I would like say to say that in some cases they are both the same. It’s Open Team based PvP, It’s Point Capture, and it’s the same idea of Three Teams. Red, Green, Blue. I can play “real” I run around flipping points and capping objectives in both environments without a single clash with other players, equally so, I can get bombarded by endless blob wars in both environments So it’s not the Mechanics that are real;y a dividing issue.
However, I can see why EotM is not considered “Real” WvW, because there is no “World Loyalty” in EotM.
EotM is like this one big huge Pug of people that are there for loot, karma, and exp. They don’t care what server they are running with or against. Leave EotM to sell/buy/trade, come back and even if it is the same “match” you can end up on a different map, running with new people, under a new commander, and facing opponents you never saw before. There is no Unity or Loyalty in EotM
Unlike WvW, where the people you see out there Today, are the same people that were there Yesterday, and will be there Tomorrow, there is a sense of My World. I will defend My Borderlands. WvW is like being in this one huge Guild. We may not all get along, but we are all part of the same team.
I think that really is where the division is between the two.
Just wanted to put that out.
I think this pretty much sums it up. EotM is a soulless void populated by automatons <cough>bots<cough> and people who are nigh-automatons.
Yes.
That said, we’ll be increasing the cooldowns on all tactics by 5-10 minutes. Also, once the scribing costs come down, as part of the april build, we can start looking at rebalancing their actual effects as well.
OMG! Actual specifics! Screenshotted.
The legendary discussion made me start thinking about this question – Why are there two different types of bows in this game? There is only one profession that uses both types – the Ranger, and even it only uses the SB for utility. And with all the weapon skins – the only difference I see between most of them is the scale.
Honestly – I think they should try merging the bow types, and giving Rangers a new weapon in exchange for the loss of the Shortbow, while letting the skins be shared. I’m certain there are lots of Thieves, especially of Sylvari disposition, who’d love to needle their foes with Kudzu, and warriors and Dragonhunters who’d love to let the Dreamer’s pink unicorns soar across the battlefield… and now that the new legendary is going to apparently be some sort of awesome Tiger-themed shortbow… what warrior wouldn’t love unleashing it’s power in furious fire?
Good call imo. The devs clearly struggle to keep things balanced. They should definitely look to consolidate into smaller sets of skills. It was done when they moved from GW to GW2 with great popularity. It should be done again, I think.
Mentioned some variations in a few other threads, if you’re interested I’ll sum them up here:
-Alliance-
Servers -> Factions
X servers -> Alliance
3 Alliances = Match-upBy combining multiple “Factions” into one alliance, this can shift every week, so population has dynamic adjustment each week, prevents band-wagon.
Pro
- Negates band-wagon and server stacking
- Keeps some server identity
- Dynamically adjust number of tiers to population
Con
- Removes low pop play style
- Reduces server identity
- Cross faction communication and cooperation might be problem
More Cons
- Too complicated
- Faction pride evaporates overnight
- Gameplay seems vapid and unsubstantial
- People will quit
- Gametype will die
Doesn’t seem such a hot idea. UNLESS, the alliances are somehow permanent.
You have to start WvW redesign from even further away – from the very basics of scoring and points and match system. Basically deciding if WvW is place for players to fight each other as mass-PvP or not.
-If you scrap the silly 24 h PPT system you can design much better WvW.
-Points per Capture for example creates completely different gamemode where effects of timezones are greatly reduced.
-You can even avoid all objectives-based points and just increase score from kills.
-Or you can reduce the time WvW is available, for example if WvW will be open for 1 hour only every 6 hours and scores are increased once after the open-hour ends.
-Or you could scrap the static 4-maps system which is horrible for finding an enemy and replace it with dynamic maps based on number players currently logging into WvW.
-Or you could change the number of servers fighting in the matchup, so there wont be only 3 servers but 6 or 9.
These suggestions have been circulating the boards for a very long time. Sadly, many have been countered, such as the problem with Points Per Capture being that players would (when the enemy have active capping teams) leave objectives in enemy hands to prevent them from capturing them.
I like the time-window idea, where you score fewer points overnight. Do I know it’ll work? Nope, I just think it’s better than nightcaps.
What a peculiar situation.
The Legendaries aren’t done six months after HoT.
I wonder what the deal is here. Are the models done, or is it taking ages to set up all the quests to acquire them? Either way, it seems there’s too much effort going in – judging by the SXSW panel, the developers spend FAR too much time thinking. Just my humble opinion. I like that they are pouring love into their work, I just think the balance is off.
This is interesting, though it would mean an AC built on the inside of a wall could hit the outside with ease. I’m ok with that as long as they don’t gain any additional range as a result of this change.
It’s certainly easier to make and use than the current Line of Sight lottery.
I concur with this person.
Used to strictly solo roam in WvW. Took a year break, came back very excited to play wvw. Not so much anymore, these maps are not the fond maps I remember, but large, vast, confusing, and very drawn out maps that offer nobody to fight in sight. Anet, what have you done? BL maps should be smaller, allows for more action. Leave the large maps to EOTM/EB.
All is Vain.
Ye and when you go away for another year break, we will be stuck with the maps you forced them to implement. Great forum-work from the people who won’t play the maps anyway.
Defending is for idiots. Attack or die! Or both!
I prefer the new maps. I sadface at the prospect of the old borders with none of the people who cried and cried and cried in this forum actually playing on them.
Question #1
Is this ok? 33g to make a column decoration.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/index.php?title=Special:RunQuery/Base_ingredients_query&Base_ingredients%5Bitem%5D=Sandstone%20Pillar&Base_ingredients%5Bid%5D=9983&wpRunQuery=trueIs this working as intended? Will/should we see prices/recipes/component droprates reviewed?
The game currently has many wonderful decorations, but my mostly-WvW guild doesn’t have many of them at all.
Yes, it’s intended that a guild hall intended for use of 100s of players for long periods of time has decorations that have a one-time cost of tens of silver per player. (Is that a good thing for the game? That’s a different question and more a matter of perspective rather than of fact.)
Question #2
Why candles? We can place a very small number of items considering the enormous size of the guild hall maps. I read that a dev thought it was a technical limitation and was going to investigate, did they ever return with an answer? The 1,000-item limit is due to the enormous graphic processing requirements of adding so many items.
What the dev said they were going to investigate was what the exact number was and whether it was something hard-coded or whether it could be tweaked. Short story: without massive changes to the current game engine, it’s never going to be much different from 1000 decorations.
So we’re looking at veeeery long-term solutions to my problems, if ever. Thank you for these answers.

Back in the day, people could put (with considerable time and effort) waypoints in keeps they held in enemy areas. This was great in terms of fun but once established, it was very difficult to get rid of these footholds. Doing so gave a sense of achievement.
The downside to Old Style Waypoints was that they were often placed by servers who were dominant and during nightcaps. You could wake up and find your map has 3 enemy waypoints on it. This could discourage some people from playing WvW altogether.
So my question is: how do we get
- the sense of achievement back,
- the convenience of an emergency waypoint (which I’ve only ever seen 1 built)
- without giving an advantage to servers who would already dominate?
So, good news!
- You (collectively) spoke.
- The team listened.
- Things are changed for the better, judging from the large number of votes in favor of this switch.
- Obviously, this is not all that’s coming, but it was a matter of importance to the WvW community, and it’s a good start, eh?
Thanks for listening.
Please do this
goes to the TP to buy lots of them
Donald Trump.
+1 for you.
Thread of positivity! (Is it ironic that the spell checker doesn’t know that word?)
Here are a couple to start us off;
1) Freedom to be creative. Devs know this feeling, they do it when they are making the PvE content – it’s FUN to be creative, the players want that feeling!
Examples of creativity in WvW:
- choosing what kind of assault to make on an objective,
- whether to charge the enemies,
- whether to sneakily build a catapult around the back of a tower while the main group is keeping the enemy distracted,
- choosing where to place a siege weapon,
- choosing which upgrades to place on an objective.
2) WvW is the OPPOSITE of raids. Raids, where you must switch off your brain and obey the instructions written by the nerd who worked out the mechanics who is in another guild on another server – nothing to do with you at all. It’s totally impersonal and punishes mistakes – it’s elitist. In WvW, mistakes are covered up by the mass – because so many people are doing things, an individual error is (usually) negligible in the grand scheme. WvW welcomes all!
Over to you.
+1 for thread title.
We lost a huge number of players when this change came. Fun was happening then suddenly it wasn’t
For many, it confirmed where WvW was on the list of developer priorities. It didn’t seem to be on the list AT ALL!
This was hands down the worst thing to happen to this game in it’s entire lifespan.

I will put a sampling of the forumwarriors on my friend list and see just how much you even play the border maps.
Everybody EXCEPT 709 didn’t vote for this.
Over seven BILLION people didn’t vote for this!
I fought for server transfer fees because I thought they would be high enough to make people think twice before moving. It didn’t work. The experiment was a failure.
Maybe they should have been more expensive, maybe transfers should not have been an option in the first place.
I think it’s time to just drop the fees entirely now. I think we’ve got to a stage where nearly all of the people who want to go to the top servers have already done so.
CC overall needs a nerf, but they can’t do it because PvE needs it for breakbar play.
The current state is horrible when you add CC to the stability nerf, which by itself seemed to reduce the playerbase by 20%.
Thanks for considering this. Everybody was curious as to why this was changed in the first place. Friday was always the better day
I previously stated this;
“the new maps DO NOT require flattening or being made simpler.”
I think I was right, but I would add the caveat that simplicity is the key with WvW. Let the players create the situations, the devs don’t have to put as much effort into this as I think they are trying to. Be selective with what you create – I don’t think it should be the gargantuan workload it seems to be turning it into.
Read the follow up post. Here’s the best part of it:
Rather than making many players suffer longer under the performance issues while we continue to look for a fix that works, the decision was made as a team to disable the event. And as the guild mission was tied to this event and had been experiencing issues, we took it out of the rotations till both our teams (WvW and Guilds) can see to it being fixed. I cannot offer an eta for a fix at this time.
So they disabled it and are working on fixing the lag and bugged guild mission. Right now, they’re planning on bringing it back once they’ve fixed those problems…
Oh, that’s good news! It gives everybody a chance to kitten how better/worse the game is now whilst giving Arenanet the option of re-implementing it should the players prefer the game that way. I think it would be prudent to look at metrics rather than forumwarrior feedback, though.
WoodSpuds did an assessment of the whole game in a recent video. His review of WvW begins at 7mins, 23seconds…
I’ll save you some time:
“One of the three core ways to play Guild Wars 2 is kind of dead here in early 2016”
WoodSpuds did an assessment of the whole game in a recent video. His review of WvW begins at 7mins, 23seconds…
Frankly, I’m disappointed that such a draconian measure was implemented rather than something more subtle.
Because it’s so low down the list of priorities. Currently it’s just below ‘fix Julie Nobrow’s left ear, it’s a micron off from left to right’.
There have been other threads about this: was going to be enabled for wvw, but then they decided they couldn’t be bothered so a horse rider or two were brought in to justify this.
No. They’ve stated they want it to be a reward for doing something in WvW, rather than PvE. I guess we’re getting a reworked Mastery system. I wonder what will happen to the current ranks.
Well done, OP, I disagree with ALL of your suggestions
WvW player culling took 1 year of our most senior engineer to fix.
Just read that again.
Took one year
Our most senior engineer. That’s 1 year for one guy to fix.
As in they only assigned one person to deal with it!
What happened to the team we’ve been hearing about for 4 years?!
I guess we’re supposed to understand that in terms of cost per man-year.
I know this dead horse has been beaten through the Earth to my guild mates in Australia, but there is no way I would make more than 70-80g over 4 days in wvw with these same hours i’m putting in.
Now I get wanting players to explore other parts of the game over just staying in one…. but there are some players that would rather earn equal amounts in the game type they enjoy. I know many people that would rather be in a large scale pvp setting to earn their gear/guild perks to use in a large scale pvp setting.
Personally i’m going for the super pistol pewpew. Just wanted to say something while I have the chance before the wvw changes. Have a great day everyone.
PvE is what you do to prepare for WvW. It’s the crap you HAVE to endure before you can have fun.
I suppose the choice is how much gold you want over how much fun you want.
Gold vs Fun.
ANET is dying. They aren’t the same company that use to honor the player, now they are all about selling outfits, wings and other useless junk for gems.
WvW will never be good again because ANET has lost their soul. You can thank Mike O’Brien for that.
I suspect someone has one eye on retirement.
ps – in the future, you may want an off site forum dedicated to wvwrs …..
They had a WvW matchup forum here once. It was shut down. Not going to happen again.
It’s here: http://www.gw2wvw.net/forum
NO. No more “Alpine was amazing” lies! It wasn’t amazing. It was, frankly, boring.
I implore Arenanet devs to ignore these miserable few forum warriors.
I believe there is some kind of internal wrangling. I’m think they’re unhappy with how it’s going. They’ve been saying we will get more details for six months …
[6 months ago]
As this effort ramps up you will be hearing more from us about the work in progress.
I’m very discouraged by this delay.
I got it when I left the Charr Mini Car (Drone Race) adventure transform.
This sort of thing happens a lot. I think it’s people like Wanze. It’s more likely to be a bot tho. You know there’s all manner of weird algorithms at work trying to fathom prices.
Masterwork (green) Berserker’s Cabalist Gloves went up to 30s 40s today. Mine sold at 9s each, I thought that was a lot!
(edited by Svarty.8019)
Well it’s not a bug so no will never be fixed
Actually, Arenanet’s track record is one of “fixing” creative uses of game mechanics. THERE WILL BE NO FUN!
Second, Anet has proven to have an extremely poor ability or desire to promote and grow our Worlds. The only reason the communities we have had exist is due to the sheer amount of work and effort by the player base. Pretty much in spite of developer actions since the Mega Server.
It’s not for want of trying, watching the first video, it’s clear they want WvW to work!
WvW is pretty much dying.. the populations are low and it is not incentivized…
PvE Legendary Armor
Fractals Legendary Back-piece
PvP Legendary Back-piece
WvW sod all…Are there any plans to bring something cool as a reward for playing WvW?
I’m really happy with the guild upgrades. I do think the costs are wrong and the way banners function should be as when they were shown on the reveal video.
You certainly can’t say “sod all”! Here is where the devs told us about a bunch of guild WvW stuff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mf6mSq2MKAA&t=27m56s
… and this one is about guild claiming and upgrades: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhNniaeirq4
Thanks for sharing. Can you, or others, give some examples of items that formerly were offered that you’d like to see again? I’m happy to take your ideas to the dev team!
Thanks.
Scarlet’s Spaulders and Scarlet’s Gloves were briefly available during an aborted “event” late last year. I have some tokens towards them saved up, but never got enough to purchase.
Green (Masterwork) Amulets are going up in price. I wonder if there will be a reason in tomorrow’s patch (which means there’s a leak) or whether it’s just random speculation? Have there been any hints about this anywhere?
“no thanks” – why not?
the new BL map is unplayable. Most players hate it and refuse to play it.
HoT and Deserted Borderland in particular has destroyed entire guilds, entire communities.
WvW population has collapsed… and you want to keep this?!
- I play the new map and it’s fine.
- If the enemy refuse to turn up, it’s their loss.
- WvW population collapsed because of stability nerf. IMO, you should make a thread called, “Do you want the old stability back [sign]”, instead.
I’m 100% certain it will be in 2016.
Are you sure you’re sure?
However, while waiting patiently works for a while, it would be nice to see a post that says something like: “Still working on WvW overhaul. We’re having to rewrite a lot of code to separate the game mode properly but it will allow us to respond quicker in the future.”
I’d far rather see that than: Silence, followed by more PvE content.
I concur. It’s nearly a month since we had the “we will be able to talk about it sooner than expected” comment.

use chill as much as possible as they hate it
if you condi you shouldnt have much problem
if you power than use the above
Thanks for this. I think the main point is to calm down and watch what they are doing instead of trying to dump a spike on them.
This would be great. WvWers need to easier access to this information, otherwise they won’t fight one another as often, making it boring for all involved (or in this case – not).
