WvW Invitational Statement from John Corpening, game director for World vs. World

Who was the person behind WvW at launch? Did he leave the company, or is he still in charge and just pulled a George Lucas?
The story goes that WvW was made by freelancers (who were DAoC fans) in their lunch hours during the development of the original game. [edited for tact] That’s the story as I tell it, anyway.
(edited by Svarty.8019)
This was experimental content which has long since led us to certain conclusions.
Overall, I can see how he could be correct, but oftentimes, I get very little reward. It’s only when there’s a PUG blob that we actually can destroy enough enemies to feel like I’m accumulating significant loot.
And yet, not only has PvE “events” of various types been jammed into the new BLs all over the place, but the thing that has the most power to influence events in the BLs is a PvE event that happens every three hours. The big crescendo, the big “feature” of WvW BLs is now a PvE gather quest.
1. The “PvE” event in the middle of the map is only boring if nobody turns up to contest it. The content is intended to be BUSY. If you want fights, which is the mantra of many WvW players, the “PvE” event is where to get them.
2. It’s not every 3 hours, it is every 1 hour. If you ever left the home map you might notice this. I think a lot of players need to realise that there is such a thing as attacking.
With this proposed system EVERYONE will enjoy WvW because he/she will be fighting with balanced team numbers most of the time.[..]
Thanks for reading.
All feedback welcome.
- I like that you’re proposing something to give us all a full map to play on.
- I don’t like that you’re proposing something that would give us zero community feels and prevent us playing with the same people all the time (i.e. one server could conceivably have people spread across multiple instances of the same map).
- If you want to make a system like this, Anet could just bin the server concept entirely.

We tried to get them from Silverwastes story but no loot drops there, ironically for fear of farm.
OP couldn’t be more wrong. Please ignore.
Great news! Faith restoring …
My (albeit brief) experience of adventures is that they need to be easier to learn and difficult to master, whereas at the moment they seem difficult to learn and thus not fun enough to want to master.
Example: Ley Line Run. This could be great if it were simple at the start, but it’s awkward, people die instantly and it’s not encouraging. You can have the end be tricky if you want to go that route, but easy to learn and difficult to master is the golden ideal of games, everybody knows this!

But whatever happened to John Corpening’s list of promises?
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/wuv/WvW-Invitational-Statement-from-John-Corpening-game-director-for-World-vs-World/first
Specifically:
As work on Heart of Thorns wraps up, we’ll be treating resolving the remaining core areas in WvW as our #1 live development feature priority
&
you will be hearing more from us about the work in progress.
I know they like bullet points, so here are some:
- I, for one, am beginning to feel somewhat betrayed.
- When everybody else was saying “they’ll never fix anything”, I said, “we have to wait and see”.
- What an idiot I am.

Here is a message today from Colin: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/the-road-ahead-for-2015/
This bodes ill for WvW. I wonder if John Corpening is still working at Arenanet or whether he has been sacked or moved? These promises are looking increasingly empty.
Bumpington Fitzsimmons-Smythe III
True, this should have been a full takeable objectif, like a mini shadowmist, instead of this dinohunt PvE event …
So this event would be much better received if the following changes were made?
- Remove mobs and power cores
- Add ring and guards
If you think NO, don’t bump the thread by saying so, just continue to enjoy the game and leave the forum full of crybabies and whiners.
Heavy Supply Bags are required item in Guild Hall upgrades (it says 50 – Scribing: Minor Supply Drop).
Here is the Wiki for Heavy Supply Bag: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Heavy_Supply_Bag
It states the (now inaccessible) Alpine WvW map as the only source of heavy supply bags.
Here is GW2 Spidy graph showing volatility (see the small graph at the bottom) – it indicates that there are no bags selling since the map was unavailable, in addition to an escalation in price way beyond anything reasonable.
http://www.gw2spidy.com/item/9285
TL;DR Please can we have a way to acquire these now inaccessible, yet necessary, items?

I think the laser event is really interesting in concept.
The idea seems to be to pull all of the servers to the map with the event on it, and to some extent it works. The problems occur when sides give up, and this happens a LOT.
Let’s propose a scenario: We don’t bother turning up to the event because we know the enemy have more players/more people at the event/our few there got wiped and told us.
Result:
The enemy who did the event say that the event is boring and PvE because there was no fight. They take the map with little-to-no resistance because the other side has given up.
Conclusion:
How is this different than the Alpine maps which were often karma-trained by a dominant side?
There’s an interesting event in the middle which would be received with far more positivity if the old problems of uneven matchups and/or one world/server having greater numerical advantages/disadvantages at specific times of day.
I agree with this. The mass of CC that’s been injected for PvE break-bars has led to a need for better counters in WvW.
With reference to DAoC, which had something akin to this, everybody congregated on one map and the others were a waste of space.
A thief can solo a grp? Is this a condi thief with plex runes?
Do pay attention, Bond! I said, “group-specced”, as in specced for fighting in a group, as opposed to being specced to solo a thief (if such a thing is possible).
I think the #1 thing should be the thing they promised would be their #1 thing:
we’ll be treating resolving the remaining core areas in WvW as our #1 live development feature
Contrary to public opinion, I don’t think you’re going to see a WvW resurgence.
What I believe you’ll see is players start to cycle back into WvW only to find no enemies to fight. Between the 4 maps, there’s just not enough players to defend and attack even with a peak population. Players will attack undefended structures and avoid defended ones.
I’m skeptical, to be frank. It all depends what the #1 development priority comes up with. Hopefully it’s not megaserver or eotm pseudo-megaserver. Those both feel soulless and lack community – PvE just feels like it’s about individualism, there’s no point joining a group there. This is why I’m not confident of a solution for WvW’s issues.
Solo players can be extremely effective. A single PvP specced thief or mesmer, for example, can quickly kill well intentioned but group-specced blob people who split off to solo a camp or sentry.

The most important thing to notice is this: I certainly would NOT like to see, for example, megaserver systems for WvW to ‘fix’ the population imbalance and would much rather like to see changes to the scoring systems.
Indeed, the server system has proven to be questionable, but in the absence of more robust community tools I fear that a megaserver-for-WvW would cause huge problems.

I totally agree with you! with HoT came nothing for dedicated wvw players!
Im not talking about the maps. We will get used to them and they are refreshing!
Automated upgrades however take away a lot of the fun I had before!
But the worst is the fact that my xp points, which still show up, just to disappear into nothing, dont give me any progress on masteries!
Also I have a couple of hundred ability points after maxing everything. I cant do anything with them!
Thats just a joke!
I so hate pve in this game! This will never change. But if I dont get a sense of character progress in wvw, why bother?
If anyone from Anet should read this: many people love this game solely for the wvw mode! Please let us convert wvw ability points into hero points!
Tyler said in another thread that Anet want to make a distinction between WvW Masteries (now called WvW Abilities) and the new PvE Masteries. For this reason, I think it’s reasonable that Masteries don’t level in WvW, even though it’s a bit of a bore for people who like to spread their play-types out.
Lots of us have huge piles of unspent points (I have mine arranged into a giant “Peace” sign) and for us it would be no big deal if autoloot were a WvW Ability*.
*Predicts that Anet do another “be careful what you wish for” switcheroo.
The sides aren’t reasonably even most of the time.
They say they are doing something about it as a #1 priority: See the thread on this page entitled, “WvW Invitational Statement from John Corpening, game director for World vs World”.

As work on Heart of Thorns wraps up, we’ll be treating resolving the remaining core areas in WvW as our #1 live development feature priority for the game to ensure we deliver on making World vs. World not just the great experience it is today – but the incredible experience we know it can be. As this effort ramps up you will be hearing more from us about the work in progress.

Has “Daily Master of Ruins” Daily been changed?
- If so, what are the new Ruins?
- If not, shouldn’t this Daily (one of today’s Dailies) be removed from the game?
Sitting on your own border waiting for enemies to arrive never made them appear. You have to attack enemy stuff if you want a fight. Also, if they don’t show up to defend their stuff, that’s their problem, not yours.
I’ve yet to see a claimed objective. Is it really this difficult to upgrade a guild to be able to +5 a camp?
How much does it cost in materials?
100g for a guild hall, for a start… then what?
When I saw the change I felt free! Finally I am able to use some other food!
Ye, saffron bread.
L2Repair. If one side is too weak to win the laser battle, they had better organise their defences instead. There are now T3 gates and upgrades happen quickly. While the laser gives powerful sides an additional advantage, it’s not the end of the game, I think there’s plenty of scope for small teams to thwart larger ones at the remains of their keeps.
The laser is very important in the current setup. It really adds a dramatic and exciting moment to the game, leading to a chain of interesting repercussions!

Like. I like it. I can see a few problems – I am, on the whole, positive about it.

I’m very much looking forward to what they come up with.
Unless you mean just speak to a non repped guild? You can do that already. You can’t link waypoints?
That’s right.
This is getting ridiculous… and toxic. People who haven’t even tried the map are … not even trying the map. This is a bad start, but it could be salvaged.
Hardly anybody has claimed an objective yet. I’ve never seen a shield generator deployed in anger (!). Hopefully some of those upgrades will help when attacking enemy things.
We need time to adjust to this new map, I think when people start to give it a bit more time they’ll find it to be slightly better than they first imagined.
But the map needs more players (in our matchup at least).
Please can we be able to link things (like waypoints) in guilds which we aren’t representing?
If you’re into WvW, you’re really into PvE.
Now.
IMO The one thing you can’t say about the map is that it is sloppily done. It’s very pretty and far far more complex than necessary.
No wonder it takes so long to make a map! We want sloppy, we want simple, we haven’t got it.
Did someone get the scaling wrong? It feels like I’m Jack in Jack and the Beanstalk!
With Heart of Thorns, guilds will be able to communicate while repping other guilds.
I’m in a now-dormant mining guild which was used for porting people to a daily mining run in Orr on the Gunnar’s Hold server when the Megaserver arrived. It ended because there was nobody willing to lead the run.
I wonder if anybody is considering setting up, leading or joining a mining guild? This could be for any resource and runs could be at any time, I suppose, though perhaps a schedule would be useful, depending on how active the guild was. Considering that it can now be across all servers, this could be very active.
(I am on the EU cluster, but maybe the americans would like to make one of these, too?)
Thoughts?
If this is part of a series of changes that would synergise to make the reset make sense (i.e. points for objectives increase as the week goes on, making gameplay later in the week more important and ultimately thus providing more dramatic finishes), then the Saturday evening reset makes sense, but Saturday morning seems… mindbogglingly crap for people who already spend most of the time trying to mitigate nightcaps.
My simple question to ANET, why are you trying to create a grindfest in a game that simply does not need one?
Non-Grind Repeatable Content is the holy grail of gaming development. Parts of GW2 that fit into this:
- WvW
- PvP
- Fracdulls (with their increasing difficulty)
- New competitive league-table adventures, or whatever that stuff is (still not sure)
All of these things are being given a fresh lick of paint in HoT.
So Anet are addressing grind concerns, I think it’s wrong to suggest otherwise.
It would be nice to know if you guys at arenanet have read this thread/are going to talk about it, it’s really not a hard thing to make and would solve a lot of problems. [..]
It’s a simple thing but such a big deal, i wish it would be taken a bit more serious.
Or at least let me and others know it’s going to be looked into.
We definitely could use a way to get PvE players into WvW, but how do you get them to try it at a time where their experience will make them want to come back for more? Many try it, die and never return. Sadly, there’s not a heavyweight streamer/podcaster that promotes WvW (except maybe Doc).
I remember at EGX in London we met some PvE guys from an enemy server and when asked if they were WvWers they shrieked like girls and hid behind their programmes. Sad.
(edited by Svarty.8019)
If the reset-time alteration is part of the promised upcoming changes:
and is also a change which means that reset time will be exciting and decisive even when being trounced:
then this could be a good change.
If the matches are already decided days before reset, it’s definitely a bad thing because people will be sitting around on Friday evening in huge numbers waiting for a crap match to end.

Please keep this thread high lest we forget!
Do you remember when Arenanet made promises in the first year of the game and then said they were working on nothing when we reminded them a year and a half later?
WvW desperately requires pop balance, scoring and matchmaking changes!
We need this list of promises to be in their faces whenever the devs visit the WvW forum, we need them to be reminded of this commitment to the players and not have this float down to page infinity and be forgotten!
(edited by Svarty.8019)
As someone who does play off-peak, I think the score should be roughly proportionate to the number of players online.
I don’t play necro. However, I do play ranger, and as a ranger I feel like Astral Form steps all over necros tankyness while having good dps and group support. How do you guys feel about it?
I have a hard time believing you play ranger at all. Necro can eat rangers alive (literally).
I want to know how. I got destroyed by a ranger 5 times tonight.
It’s just a kitten class. Everybody makes mistakes. Arenanet all made one big mistake in necro.
annnnnd this is why I’m a norn necro… snow Leopard for dash and stealth lol .. I don’t use my elites much on necro anyway…..
kitten … I insta-leveled a human necro recently because I wanted to play Reaper, but completely forgot about the norn racial. LOL… makes me want to delete it and raise another one. Four minute cool down is a bit much though.
4 minutes is pretty harsh, but then again, it’s basically a guaranteed disengage, and WvW is a game played out over days rather than minutes. You can run back to a friendly tower and go take a bathroom break or something.
Ya… I’m actually seriously considering it. In addition to stealth, a 1600 range dash on a 10 sec cd is pretty insane.
Recommended – you won’t notice the cooldown unless you constantly throw yourself into danger. I’m using this on my ranger and it’s just fantastic – and that’s a class with plenty of escapes!
Sadly, my necro is teh salad-of-doooom … reroll is a distant possibility if Reaper doesn’t redeem it, though.
