- Guardians are probably the most balanced, they have good offense and great defense, but suffer in the range and mobility department. The have a lot of boons/support and condition removal, but very few applications of conditions or boon removal. (not like the last part matters) They don’t really have any dead skills or trait, nor too many bugs, their just about right all round.
.
- Condition removal is limited and on long cooldowns. A condi spammer such as a necro will annihilate a guardian, as will a condi-warrior (of course).
- Dead Traits: I’ve seen some of the garbage traits on other classes and can confirm that while most Guardian traits are … okay (if not desirable), there’s only two or three builds that any serious guardian will go with (in PvP, WvW or PvE).
- Dead Traits: Take a look at the downed traits: [Revenge of the Fallen] “+50% damage while downed”. Nobody in their right mind would take this trait. Likewise [Strength of the Fallen] “Lose health slower when downed”.
- Dead Traits: Then there is the myriad of wasted Spirit Weapon oriented traits and the skills to go with them : [Wrathful Spirits], [Eternal Spirit], [A Fire Inside], [Improved Spirit-Weapon Duration]
^So thrown-together was this last one that they didn’t even think of a fancy name for it.
Dead Skills: [Bow of Truth] [Hammer of Wisdom] [Sword of Justice] [Shield of the Avenger]. They were crappy before they got nerfed, now they are obsolete.
Is it any wonder that the most popular trait line is the one with no spirit weapon traits on it?
- Dead Skill: Merciful Intervention: This is horribly bugged – you just teleport to the nearest piece of furniture or hillside. If it were a desirable skill, this would be a sad thing but it’s not.
- Dead Skills: Signets: Aside from Signet of Resolve, they’re simply not good enough.
I’ll leave it at that, but as you can see, there’s plenty to work on and Guardians aren’t quite the perfect class Arenanet made them out to be.

- Forget any buffs, the devs just did Ready Up 15 where they tried to justify the guardian’s current position, stating that they are happy with it where it is – any requests for buffs will therefore be in vain.
- Devs said Guardian is just for groups.
- Extrapolating on this, Guardians who spec away from shouts and boon-oriented traits, such as Meditation builds, are not playing as intended. Perhaps the traits need to be reworked?
… I can’t see that happening because Guardians are in a good place, right?
- Reroll OP warrior like everybody else, the only thing devs see as wrong with them is their movement.
- Why does Guardian have cone abilities (shield #4 & torch #5 condi removal & Healing Breeze) when he is supposed to be in front of his allies?
(edited by Svarty.8019)
According to the Ready Up #15, it seems to me that the reason you are bad is that :
- Warriors have your Kill Shot.
Bullet pointed for the devs.
Here’s another idea (been mentioned many times before):
- Tick every 30 mins or 45 mins, or hourly, instead of 15 mins.
Advantage: Punishes mindless blobbing of objectives without taking PPT into account.
I enjoyed the Ready Up and would like to say thanks for doing it.
Arenanet obviously have to be very careful what they say and I think they did a good job of conveying the myriad of factors that makes balance such a nightmare, and sometimes often seemingly unfair.
[edit] (because it is, by design).

The short answer is No.
The long answer is Nooooooooooooooooooooo.
Go AH (tanky) or go meditations (spike – something like this, though I prefer 2h weapon). The other options seem to be extremely poor in comparison.
We’ve been trying Virtues builds in my guild WvW and in my opinion they’re significantly weaker than AH.
Well, those are your options. Welcome to the Guardian’s, “Good Place”.
See.. everybody loves Kraitkin!
I disagree with all of the suggestions on the OP’s post. Every single one.
- I believe there should be an allegiance system.
- I think there should be better and more interesting upgrades available at a keep, things that make you want to keep it. This way servers can say “we concentrate on keeping this keep, and the others can be wooden” etc.
Perhaps make it so that only certain keeps can get certain upgrades to encourage this “choice” aspect[edit: on second thoughts, this is an awful idea]. One example: Golem repair/upgrade workshop.
- It’s my opinion that there should be a set number of guards for each realm and that number should get recalculated at tick depending on the following rule: The number of guards you have should be spread across your currently held objectives. This will make it less likely that one side will be focused down to nothing, and much more difficult for the enemy to do so.
(edited by Svarty.8019)
Guardian = Strength: Damage Mitigation and Burst heals with virtues. Weakness: condition damage application, poor long-range effectiveness, extreme cooldowns.
Fixed it for you.
HOW TO CHANGE WVWVW? (THIS IS A WIP)
- New way of distributing score: multiply score based on how long structure A has been held: this will encourage defending for more score
- I think this one is a good idea
- Give weekly rewards for match-ups to all players.
- Please expand on this. Do you mean ALL players? Or people who did enough in WvW to earn these rewards? Are these rewards the same as the chest(s) we all get every week?
- Give empty buildings (to counter PvDoor) npcs that scale with the amount of players inside: nobody inside? Add more npcs and give them the option to use siege weapons, supply and blueprints. This will promote the feel of a vibrant world, and will counter PvDoor.
- This one makes no sense. This idea promotes people vacating buildings.
- A better idea would be to have a certain number of NPC guards and spread that number across the number of objectives you own. Thus, if you own fewer buildings, you have more guards at each building. Conversely, as you gain more objectives, each has fewer NPC guards, allowing smaller groups of enemies to attack them more easily.
- Add in risk vs. reward (small scale and guild groups > blobbing)
- I have two points about this:
- There is no point in rewarding smaller groups (virtually) materially for attacking larger ones. There are already many groups who run small groups and try to take on the skill-less blob. The motivation is already there. FUN.
- It will require a skills rebalance to allow small groups to take on huge blobs and win. At the moment there is an approximate threshold above which a smaller group simply can’t beat a blob, regardless of how much skill they have. I think this is probably working as intended and I’m OK with it.
- Make the amount of objectives x10, and capturing a structure require capping different locations at the same time.
- I’m not keen on there being more objectives, but I think the structure capping requiring different locations is a great idea from TESO.
- Make defending rewards similar to the reward for a dungeon run, based on how long you in particular were active in the defense.
- I don’t see why.
- This could be a massive gold-inflatory problem. While I can see that your counter being that it would be dependent on how long the defence was, I think this could be exploited far too easily. “Defend-Bots” would definitely be a problem for a number of reasons.
It has come to the point that as WvW has not received real updates since launch that we ourselves would not mind doing the testing.
I can appreciate that many people don’t like EotM, but don’t conflate a lack of updates that you personally like with a lack of updates. WvW has added a great deal of content and rewards over just the last calendar year.
Hopefully you will find more you like in future updates and we’ll continue to add to the game.
From my perspective, EotM was more than any of us wanted. There’s far too much content in EotM. Too much time and effort was put into it.
It’s my perception that we don’t want that much stuff, we want less complex (non-floating) maps with very few if any of the crazy new mechanics you threw in as experiments.
I think we just want a slightly different landscape (perhaps a map rotation) – it’s as simple as that. And it shouldn’t matter if you kitten-it-up balance-wise because there would be 3 versions of it.
Still, it’s awfully nice to see a red post, giving some clear answers.
Indeed it is, thanks for the feedback Devon, it’s good to know you’re still alive.

Is there somewhere I can see one of those infographics for the final week of the league? Our server put in a lot of extra effort and I’d be interested in seeing what happened in numerical form.
Drinking game: Every time they say, “Guardians are in a good place”.
I agree that WvW is a shadow of what it should be. The really disgusting thing is that it’s the best the games developer community has to offer.
“Disgusting”….. really… disgusting? Exaggerate much?
Appropos – looking at some “past” games being much better in some ways – yes, it’s becoming a bit disgusting.
One person said it best:
If the errors in WvW were gem store based, WvW would be taken offline and it would be fixed that day.
To expand on my previous statement, I am of the firm belief that many of the important decisions regarding games of this genre (realm-based battle MMOs, not just GW2) are made by people who have little passion for it and few qualifications/little experience or competence in it.
I could even go further and state that gross mismanagement on a truly massive scale is probably more the norm than not – as evidenced by CCP: http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/jun/05/world-of-darkness-the-inside-story-mmo-ccp-white-wolf

Noob guardian? That could be me!
Don’t give them the attention they crave by responding and bumping this thread…
… doh!
I agree that WvW is a shadow of what it should be. The really disgusting thing is that it’s the best the games developer community has to offer.

Yes. I’m especially disgusted that the only way to get a realm-play game made, after many previous games have proved that this game-mode is popular, is to get it Kickstartered. It’s hard to believe that in an industry that prides itself on it’s supposed creativity and passion they wouldn’t be able to cater to this want.
The lack of content for WvW has been shocking. One rather terrible map since release is just not enough. They changed a few parts and removed the water which i think was the right move. They could really shake up the maps each season, changing them up.
Actually, I found EotM to be a fascinating insight into what Arenanet are capable of. Ironically, we don’t need a map so intricate, complex and packed with features and content. We simply don’t want or need a lot of what EotM contained. Keep it simple! Arenanet don’t have to spend that many resources on WvW, especially if they are then going to ignore WvW for months and months on end.
(edited by Svarty.8019)
Don’t worry guys, Arenanet have been keeping their big WvW update quiet all this time…
… What?
Send these to Josh Grouch (Manager), he’s doing a Ready Up next Friday and would love all the WvW material he can get his hands on!
I agree that WvW is a shadow of what it should be. The really disgusting thing is that it’s the best the games developer community has to offer.
I would also conduct a comprehensive analysis to ascertain which colour has waypoints over each week. If it’s green, then green’s map could perhaps be changed to make capturing things easier. Alternatively, Arenanet could offer incentives to the other teams to take green’s objectives.
I (and others) suggested incentivising teaming-up on the currently-leading-server-at-any-one-time in the original round of CDIs.
Guess what: nothing happened.
I agree with Joe. My version of WvW would be a tabula rasa.
Having said this, I realise it’s not going to happen. I would therefore start with …
Megaserver. That’s right, I’d megaserver WvW. I feel this is inevitable anyway. I’d create allegiances to NPC Generals/Lords (whatever you want to call them) instead. It’d work exactly as it does now, but in the initialisation phase, you select an NPC faction. Suddenly the factions can have individual character such as permanent banners and graphics unique to each (unlike worlds). I’m sure you can think of more ways this is superior to the current system.
Changing allegiance should be very tricky. I suggest ONE free transfer AFTER each “league/tournament” during a very short window – let’s get rid of this “buying guilds” nonsense.
(edited by Svarty.8019)
I think it would help the forum goers a great deal to have an idea of what the team is currently munching on, so to speak. We all know how many things were in previous CDIs that are not yet real, but we don’t know how many are perhaps being considered. To prevent a new CDI from being flooded with ‘REMEMBER THOSE COMMANDER TAG CHANGES???", let us know what is on the table and what isn’t.
“New maps aren’t in the budget this year” – imaginary red post
Ok, good! Now I know not to type up a bunch of junk about what I would like to see in a new map. Instead, I can focus my energies on suggestions about things you are actually considering. This is only an example.
If a CDI drops before the forum goers have any idea of what is on the horizon or totally not considered, it will be hundreds of posts about irrelevant things. I am not expecting a road map, just some gentle direction. Save yourselves a migraine later, throw us a bone now.
I agree 100% with this, but we know it will be based on “Tournaments”, rather than other aspects of WvW, so… that really narrows it down a lot.
The sarcasm is strong in this one
It baffles me every time when people fail to see what’s right there oO
Indeed. We just had an enormous PvP update with wardrobe and all the trait and trinket flipping JUST (well, mainly) for the PvP guys!
To quote the wise old Groucheroo, “You give someone $100 and they’re gonna want $101”.
http://www.twitch.tv/guildwars2/c/4362362&t=9m11s
(9m11s)
WHERE IS MY WVW WEAPON.
Where is your reward for walking into WvW and leaving again? They’re doling those things out to any Tom, kitten or Harry.
Anyway, back on topic, where’s my PvE? Oh, 1st July. There it is… right there. See?
Precursors keep people playing. It’s important that something in the game be very difficult to accomplish. I’ve seen people quit once they’ve achieved their goals.
Then one day I ran into a flipper, which I think is just a slur for “investor”.
It’s a little more complicated than that. A flipper is someone who accumulates gold quickly by buying items priced below the market average (buying from players who either don’t know the value of the items or aren’t interested in waiting for a buyer who will offer market value) and “flipping” them by immediately offering them for sale at market value to someone else. The risk to this is that if he misjudges the market price, he may not sell the items quickly enough, tying up a lot of gold in unsold inventory and costing more in TP fees when he cancels and relists.
This is great in theory, but most flippers will have enough cash to just sit on stuff at the new price. I see it all the time, loads of items way higher than market price that will not sell unless Arenanet change the game in some way. And they (we) can sit on those sell orders forever, paying no fee.
the statement soon was almost a year ago..
The statement “soon” is now a legend in and of itself.
I won’t lie. My inspiration for this topic is that I want the legendary Kraitkin as a staff.
SO, as you may have guessed, the idea is to recycle some of the old tridents to be used as staves. This is not a new idea, Arenanet, you did it yourselves with some of the existing sets.
Another reason for requesting this is that some tridents look WAY better than the spears in the same set. For example:
- The new Hero’s Trident: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/File:Hero%27s_Trident.jpg
… would make a much nicer staff than - The new Hero’s Staff:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Hero%27s_Staff
Then there’s Kraitkin. A majestic work of art that is doomed to be completely forgotten for the simple reasons that
- you can’t see as well underwater
- not much of the game is set underwater
- under water is not a very sociable place to hang out
[img]http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/File:Kraitkin_preview.jpg[/img]
So please, if not for me, for the trident artists in your squad! Make staff skins from the great old tridents!
Warrior is unquestionably OP atm. Just learn it.
For WvW the bog standard (for Guardians in groups) is the AH trait build.
Something like 1,0,6,6,1
Zeal (First Minor)
Valor IV, VI, XI
Honor II, IX, XI
Virtues (First Minor)
Make sure to run 2-handed weapons. Use Staff #4 as much as you can for heals and more heals.
I usually run 2 shouts and something else.
For PvP, the standard is Meditations
Valor I, X, XII
Use 3 meditation skills.
I can’t remember the rest. :/
(edited by Svarty.8019)
I’ve put about 1000 hours into my DPS Guard and the only real flaw I can think of is mobility.
While it is true that Anet hasn’t done jack kitten in the past months, I do recall them buffing Necromancers by giving them #5 in DS – perhaps they will finally admit that Guards need some love in the mobility department and they will come up with something along the lines of a 4th virtue. Unfortunately, this would require a re-work of the last trait line which is something I doubt they would get into.
Please remember that not all of us are PvP players. Mobility is not a problem for WvW (staff) Guardians.
Hi guys , if its possible to add the /resign ????
Why do this to yourself? Other games are that way →
None of this is even remotely likely.
Arenanet seem to be done changing classes. This crappy situation is IT
I’m also going to roll a guardian now
Good luck
If you’ve got any nice WvW plays, stick them on this too. I’m certain that the Competitive Team would love to see this for next week’s Twitch TV show.
I think the 20s Chill from Necro is more broken than anything on Engi.
I know the devs only read this forum, but the balance forum is over there —→ along with the ranger forum.
Guardian has to have special set of gear and traits for each task. There is no one-size-fits-all, so you have to say what you want to do; PvE? PvP? WvW?
theres one warr build i seem to just cant stand up against and thats condi snip
Go condi or go home.
Elona’s Reach came…
The fact that some classes can just spam out Conditions without having to decide which conditions they are is testament to the ill-thought out nature of said classes and this type of gameplay.
I question the competence of it’s creators.
Fireworks still don’t work in WvW
Looks like this Jessica “Wuv Doctor” Boettiger is the latest in a long line of people to have been lumbered with Arenanet’s least desirable position. Good luck Jessica!
All the best threads are in the trashcan.
To maintain the current system of “Servers” when the rest of the game left them behind years ago is a special kind of neglect.
The devs don’t have an answer for this yet. They were debating it this afternoon with no conclusion reached.
The one who programmed it left the company in the meantime, so they are as curious as we are what will happen
Edit: Lol this was only a joke, stop making a rumor out of a joke
Ye but it’s probably true. The others put pins on the WvW programmer’s chairs and call him/her “stinky” behind his/her back. Or they would if he/she existed.
