I’ve seen said videos. It’s just wrong. And I’ve a feeling that it will get ‘fixed’ by banners paying attention to ranger class damage scaling rather than letting us rangers do more damage.

I do agree with Dailies/Monthlies not being counted for this. Now I don’t think that the points should be removed. Far from it. Just that they should not count for the achievement point unlocks. And this comes from someone in the top 10%.

Now hear me out before responding.

Dailies and Monthlies already grant laurels which are one type of currency. Allowing the achievement points from gaining them to count towards the rewards would have these points grant double rewards.

Also, if these points did count then one could conceivably unlock everything with nothing but the dailies and monthlies. If the point of the rewards is to reward us with more than titles for experiencing the content, allowing dailies and monthlies would undermine that purpose.

Ok the main reason isn’t damage in sPvP. Even if the Longbow does more damage, most would use a longbow. It has the more mobile skillset. It provides poison which is huge with slowing heals, a free evade, cripple, and daze/stun. Longbow has a slower attack speed, slower animations, just not as good in close range combat. Most of your fighting is going to be on a point, you’re either not on the point attacking them in which case they can typically tank/avoid the damage, or both are on the point fighting which means you’re doing less damage. Your knockback is a nice interrupt but Barrage isn’t as great in sPvP, dodging/avoiding he qucikshot ins’t hard either if your opponent isn’t terrible it’s easy to dodge a majority, stealth or get something between you and the longbow user.

Basically that the SB is a superior weapon for mobility, and in sPvP mobility is king. Unless you’re on point defense. Then bunkering is. And then you’d use melee over any of the ranged options.

Why add the vuln spike to the rapid fire? How about adding a long-lasting vuln to the auto attack? Possibly speeding up the rapid fire as it, at the moment, does no more damage than the auto. That still frees up a slot for a new skill while making both #1 and #2 more useful.

Because LB1 needs a chance cripple and not vulnerability. If 1k+ range is the optimal killzone, you need to give the shooter a meaningful chance to actually take a 2nd shot. Because there’s nothing to CC the target there currently. That, or the range penalty has to go. I’m waiting for Anet to figure out which one.

Rapid fire’s anemic damage could be easily remedied by decreasing the channel’s completion time, and/or firing less arrows for the same damage.

Or increase arrow speed so the arrows have a much higher chance of hitting. It is a longbow, after all, which are known for their very, very high power. LB should not be about CCing them so you and others can hit them. That should be the SB. LB should be about powerful hits that make the enemy reel.

… if you want charge shot to replace rapid fire, you’ve obviously never used LB before.

This sounds a lot like that suggestion to let pets dodge when the ranger dodges, which was really a nerf when you think about it.

Consolidate LB3’s vulnerability with LB2 and put charge shot on LB3 instead. It’s pointless to separate them. In fact I have a macro that’ll do LB3 before LB2 because of how fast LB3 fires. Leave my rapid fire alone; I like to keep hunting thieves with it, thanks.

1 – Pet AI improvements or attack speed increase and AoE resistance.
2 – Make the LB worth using on it’s own merits.
3 – Complete spirit rework. Remove the internal CD for effects and at least double the effect range. Don’t need to make them invincible. They were not in GW1. They survived in GW1 due to being intelligently placed at max range. The current range in GW2 is just too short to allow them to survive.

Also, please please change up opening strike, it has so much potential but atm is really not that good. Add 150% damage to it, allow it to give might to pet, whatever it is I think it needs to be worked on. For people traiting in marksmanship it is really important, but 30 trait points for pew and then nothing is a little disappointing.

I’d almost say remove Opening Strike. It may be somewhat useful/viable in PvP and WvW, but for late-game PvE players (read: those that do dungeons) this trait is nigh-useless. An entire traitline that helps spike once per extended fight then is 100% useless for the rest of it. Even with resetting on enemy kill it is still quite useless as things in dungeons don’t tend to die that fast so you still spend a majority of all fights with a useless set of traits.

Fair enough point, but the toggle is a great idea that one of the pros brought up that Jonathan just seemed to brush aside. Here is my issue with the logic behind what Jonathan was saying: He said they didn’t want to “…raise the floor of the class too much” by adding full pet control. I get that. Totally valid point. My issue is that they still stand by wanting the pet to be a necessity. For good players that can multi-task, the pet becomes a burden while still being such a big part of the damage that the Ranger does. The trade off doesn’t seem fair. Give us one or the other please. Let us either have a toggle to have full control of our pets or give us the ability to go without a pet and a damage boost without it. Telling us we HAVE to have pets all the time and yet we CAN’T get full control of our pets is more than a little frustrating.

As for things I liked in the stream: Streamlining longbow is awesome. Loved the idea. Just my two cents. Hope it made sense.

Yeah. The direction they’re still taking pets in is worrying. I don’t mind having it be the core class mechanic, but no other class is as directly hobbled by an openly broken class mechanic that seems to have no fix.

As for the longbow? I think all rangers are looking forward to a longbow that is worth taking for a reason other than ’it’s the only 1200 range weapon’. Because that reason is hard to swallow.

In SOTG they said 1500 breaks the game, so it wont be default, let alone 1600. I think the bow does good damage already and that 25% more would be pretty OP (i have regular 10k+ rapid fire as it is now).

LB1- No more damage tiers. Lower damage by 25%, lower cast time to 1/2. Applies Vulnerability (1 stack).

The LB still has low damage compared to the SB, even at max range. It should do significantly more damage as it is the ‘power’ weapon for rangers. Or at least it should be.

I agree with the removal of the damage tiers on the LB. That forces us to remain at max range at all times or take a massive DPS hit. And that is very hard to do. But I don’t agree with the damage lowering. The damage at all ranges should be equal or greater to it’s current ‘max range’ damage.

Here’s an idea, how about the ability to change our “arrow heads” on longbow.

Remove the 3 ability, and place that Debuff on our number auto attack

Have the 3 ability be a Cycle Ability that Changes our Arrow Heads, or Adds to them.

For example…

Poison Arrow – Adds Poison to all our Shots
Barbed Arrow – Adds Bleeds to our Shots
Ignited Arrow – Adds a Burn to our Shots.

Ect ect..That’d be somewhat interesting..

That would be interesting, but that mechanic would make far more sense for the SB as that seems more like a skirmishing weapon mechanic. Also SB is the condition-based weapon, not the LB.

sPvP is the only place that the ranger is not lacking in. And that is the problem. They keep only balancing the class around sPvP. Around a point control gametype. A gametype that does not translate at all to either WvW or PvE.

As to why the community hates it? Because we bring less to the table than any other class. Because in order to be useful we need to be much better as players. And players would rather take other classes over us as they are more likely to have less trouble with them.

Guardian is my main alt class, but I still love the ranger over it. Guardian is a more balanced class with fewer issues, but I prefer the much more mobile ranger and how it plays better.

Maybe make Eagle Eye boost the damage of both bows and then say Increase Longbow Range, and maybe increase condi durations on the SB skills or increase precision while using SB or something along those lines so both bows actually do get buffed. Or maybe just merge Quick Draw and Piercing Arrows to make it easier shrugs (i’m more concerned about merging piercing arrows just because of how freaking strong that trait is for our prof)

Perhaps it could be combined with SB range and/or cooldown as it doesn’t typically get used with LB due to the incredibly slow rate of fire. So the LB trait would be cooldown, range and damage and the SB trait would be cooldown, range, and piercing. Maybe make the SB one a Grandmaster due to it. Would definitely be worthy of a Grandmaster with that utility.

Yes, but that’s just CD and some damage boost, what you’re suggesting is a damage boost, range boost, and all your attacks are now a narrow limitless target cone, do you not see how that is significantly stronger than that warrior trait?

Personally i’d like to see them all combined into one trait called"Bow Mastery" and slapped into the Grand Master spot of Marksmanship, and drop Remorseless down to a Master trait, maybe merge it with something else, but i can see a ton of people disliking that.

Oh! No! Don’t combine all three. That would be too broken. Combining just range extension and cooldown per weapon would not be too broken. Some would complain that it doesn’t affect both weapons anymore but it would also make us choose to specialize in one bow over the other, which isn’t a bad thing.

Because that’d make it an EXTREMELY powerful trait, not to mention that they’d need to make another trait to fill the void.

Not that powerful. Look at Burning Arrows for warriors. Range extension, recharge reduction, and increased damage against burning foes in one trait. We should not need more traits to do the same work as the warrior.

EDIT: Apparently I misread and it doesn’t have the range extension. Still. I don’t think it would be to broken.

Yes. Yes it would. But if they put in those two pet skills you’d see a lot less rangers complaining about their pets.

Rangers really need more traits to affect their bows. Combining the LB cooldown reduction with Eagle Eye and make Quick Draw for SB only, adding in, perhaps, range extension and possibly a small damage buff. Leave Piercing Arrows intact as it effects both. Or perhaps make it SB only and add it to Quick Draw as it honestly does make more sense, gameplay wise, for the SB.

I will do some more testing too, I just did this quickly with such results. I actually tested some more now but the lb still wins, very slightly but still.

Let’s make a deal and rather talk about other weapons to be weak instead of sb being superior. I just fear the nature of anet’s sence for balance and feel sb nerf just cause ppl saying it’s superior :-).

Oh. We’re all pretty open in saying that LB is weaker than it should be. The signature power ranged damage weapon should show significantly more damage than the skirmishing ranged weapon.

I will not, though, deny the power that the SB does provide. I have faith that they won’t nerf the weapon further.

I totally agree on the range decrease of sb.

Nerfing one weapon to force use of another is not acceptable, period. Make it appealing due to it’s own merits. Don’t force us to use it because we have no other choice. That is just bad design decision. Sorry.

Increased range master trait probably won’t happen for a number of reasons

I will hope that it does come. If we wish to specialize in the weapon, there is no reason we should not have that range. LB is not a condition weapon like the SB is. We should, if we choose to run condition, have a suitable weapon for that range. LB is not.

Again, agreed. But pet AI does need to be improved as currently we need to micro the kitten out of the pet and hope that it uses the right moves. No other class has to hope the AI does the right thing to maximize their DPS.

Not really. He agreed that with companions might our pet can do more damage than before.

We should not receive a blanket nerf to pet damage unless we trait in Skirmishing and don’t take the direct damage traits that may benefit our individual build better. For my pet to do as much damage as before I would need to weaken my conditions and lower my own damage. And I don’t think I have the only ranger build that was nerfed by it. If we receive a blanket across the board pet damage buff, it should be transferred to rangers across the board. As a class, the pets are not so powerful as to have needed that nerf across the board.

They could have done a lot more splitting of skills in GW1 than what they did. There was a tonne of underpowered skills in the ranger trees that could have easily received buffs in PvE. Unsurprisingly, a lot of them were in the Beast Mastery line.

Really? Beast Mastery had some insanely OP skills in GW1. Insanely. Pet shouts Otyugh’s Cry, Heal as One, and the nature spirit Edge of Extinction among them.

I just tested on heavy golem and idk what you are talking about. With longbow I needed aprox 11sec to get golem down (from 1200 range). With shorbow from side I needed aprox 15secs.

I don’t know how it took you that long. My testing never took more than 13 seconds from the side with zerker stats and SB. Less with rampager. And LB took longer than 15 seconds. I, of course, am counting bow damage only. No utilities. No pet.

Also I don’t like you speaking about shortbow as superior weapon. It sounds like you want it to be nerfed in dmg. The bow is just fine, even the range nerf was not necessary. Go try this, make full berserker build and go try kill with shortbow full tanky guardian holding a point. You probably won’t kill him and if, then it will take ages. Then make a tanky/condi build and go try to kill him again, this time use torch and axe. You would be surprised that while you being much more tanky you are able to get him down as fast or even faster then with full berserker build.

Shortbow simply wins, cause it’s weapon for every situation. It has decent dmg, it can be used from range as well as in close combat. It has control skills, conditions. Nerfing shortbow just cause other weapons are used less, simply cause they are luckluster is not the way to go.

I’m not speaking of it as I want it to be nerfed. SB does not need nerfs. LB simply needs buffs. And if you watched any of the SotG, even Jonathan Sharp noted that the LB needs streamlining and updating for power.

I still do hold, though, that the SB is a superior weapon. I will do a full testing with multiple builds and stats and post the results tomorrow to end this silly argument of LB vs SB for pure damage.

If they would do in GW2 what they did in GW1 then I wouldn’t care about STOG. Only because they HAVE NOT split them 100% do I care whats going on in the PvP side of things. I watch to know what nerfs are coming the ranger way more than anything.

Even GW1 didn’t split all skills. They only split some skills as needed. Most skills are the same in PvP and PvE in GW1. That will most likely remain the same in GW2 as they start splitting skills.

We’re not saying the LB is weak, just that it isn’t as powerful as the SB. People don’t all use the SB because they’re lazy. Most do because it’s still the superior weapon.

It’s an sPvP podcast. The whole reason for it is to have a discussion with sPvP players about game balance and what’s going on with sPvP. They only discuss PvE stuff because it does impact on skill balance (because they haven’t been aggressive with splitting between the formats so far). I think GW2Guru expressed a desire to have another podcast where they discuss other formats (like WvW, PvE and dungeons) but they didn’t have the appropriate volunteers willing to organise it.

I think we, as a community, really need to get people together willing to help with a PvE/WvW SotG. The recent balance patches have shown a near total emphasis on sPvP, and without input from the community I really don’t see that changing.

The vulnerablity plus barrage and or the rapid fire more than makes up for the attack speed. Because Lb scales in range you need to test at all 3 ranges.

I tested max range with the vuln spikes and rapid fire. I tested with maximum damage potential on the LB at max range. I didn’t just auto-attack. I wanted a true test. And that test proved that SB is a superior weapon.

Again, try it yourself. I did my work as I want to be as effective as possible. Not just to prove a point.

I don’t think longbow does lower dmg then shortbow. But longbow is rather static weapon and as some aspects of the game require mobility, then shortbow is much better choice.

Test it out, Miyu. Test out the two with identical stats. We need to spend more time actually testing out this stuff instead of speaking from conjecture. You will find that the SB is more powerful.

Represented it well for sPvP. Us PvEers still have too many unanswered questions as we are a lot less viable in PvE than PvP.

Now yes, I understand that this is a sPvP State of the Game. But why is sPvP the only one that gets this kind of attention? Are not all classes affected in all game modes each month? Why does only sPvP get the dialogue?

SOTG is hosted by GW2 Guru. Guru has asked multiple times for hosts who are interested in producing a show that covers WvW and another that covers PvE, and that show would get to interview the devs semi monthly.

No one stepped up to host any of the shows, except for sPvP. The PvE and WvW community is huge, but its not at all competitive in GW2 like it is in say, WoW, so no one who is in the business of podcasting/blogging is going to cover it because there is no known guilds to talk about competing for “firsts.” there are no names or deathspam in wvw, hell keeps dont even show the guild tag of the owner, just some ambiguous emblem, so again, no notoriety = no interest in shows

If it took some of us to speak up and take the helm, I’m sure that many of us would be very willing to step forward and assist. I don’t frequent GW2 Guru, so I know very little of what goes on there. I prefer to keep my attentions to the official forums.

So no, I disagree that the LB is more powerful. It has gotten more powerful, but not yet as powerful as the SB.

I tested as I want more reason to use my longbow, but it’s still not the weapon du jour for rangers until it receives more positive attention.

Or until the shortbow receives more negative attention. Cause that’s how you balance a game, right?

That was a mistake on their part and I am sure that they realize that by now. But I don’t think we’ll see any changes until the next monthly patch.

People keep saying that the SB has more damge its not true even with the bleed attack that you won’t get most of the time.

People just like the feel of the sb more they feel like they are doing more. Also at one time it was very easy to just strafe long bow arrows. People havent retested or seriouly reconsidered The long bow.

The axe is only better vs two or more targets. People really need to test things for themselves.

Sb does do better in a condition build which alot of rangers run.

I tested both bow and came out with the long bow being better. I didnt run a berseker build I tested with the build I run. You should do the same and see for yourself.

After the nerf I decided to do a bit of testing. Same stats (20/30/20/0/0), rampager and zerker amulets, and SB, LB, and axe. You know what I found? At any range that the SB could hit, it did as much damage as the LB at max range. And that was only attacking directly head on, meaning no bleeds. Attacking from the side? SB was far superior. Both did more damage than the axe over the same time period.

No, that’s NOT fine. I don’t care if you deal 90% less damage if you can do it without any concern of any of the boss’s mechanics. That’s breaking the encounter.

So yes, they’d have to completely redesign every boss mechanic just because you want LB to have more than 1500 range. And that’s not reasonable. Try again.

Another problem with over 1500 range: I don’t know how many of you try routinely attacking from 1200+ range in PvE, but most of the time you try you encounter the lovely ‘invulnerable’ message. That will only become more prominent. For the most part, in PvE at least, that additional range will be completely useless.

A little confused at your response. First, I never said I don’t care for PvE players, I just don’t care for PvE.

My apologies. I misunderstood your wording.

Second, I was under the impression you were referring to Battosai as not representing the ranger community well, but you say his answers were evasive meaning that you are talking about Jon, correct? If that is so (not saying I don’t agree with you), understand that it would be hard to come up with all the answers right there on the spot. I know whenever I do something like that I always mentally kick myself afterwards because I could/should have said something but didn’t remember it when I was on the spot.

I’m speaking strictly of his body language. He exhibited evasive body language that led me to believe that he was highly uncomfortable even saying what little he did. And the fact that the ranger discussion was half as long, with far fewer people participating, than any other class discussion was also disheartening.

That said, we can all agree that ranger needs work everywhere, so any changes that aren’t nerfs are good for us regardless of how we play.

True. I am looking forward to what little was said, especially the potential of more survivable pets in PvE and a longbow worth using.

That being said? I’m still a bit worried about the direction of the class. Seeing more positive changes will make me less worried and I know that all we can do now is wait and see.

EDIT: Also, I will main a ranger until the class is removed from the game or the game ends.

Well … without sounding like too much of an kitten, I give zero kittens about PvE in GW2. I want to see changes for WvW and sPvP because fighting players is what I enjoy. With that said, the points he made (if implemented) could bring the profession up to par where build diversity can prosper for not just PvP but PvE as well.

I don’t play PvP at all but I still care about the classes balance in PvP as well. It’s great that you enjoy PvP. But please don’t ‘not care’ about us PvE players. We are playing the same class as you and want all of our fellow rangers to enjoy the class.

The points that he did make could help the class greatly in all game modes, yes. But his evasiveness on answers, and even how he answered makes me worry.

We are already forced to micro-manage to be effective. And we are forced to predict how the pet will operate. Were we given direct controls we could micro-manage much more easily.

And if the argument is that we shouldn’t need to micro-manage … well … we do, at least if we want to be halfway useful.

Elementalists seem to do just fine with one weapon/weapon set. Warriors are OP with just an axe. They don’t even need an off hand weapon or a weapon swap.

I’ve yet to find any situation in which, as a ranger, I did not swap weapons at least once for maximum effectiveness. Yes, some classes don’t need it due to class mechanics (eles; their ‘one weapon set’ is 20 skills, not 5) or due to their weapons just being that powerful (warrior, I’m looking at you). Rangers, however, need to do a lot more work just to try to do as much damage. And that usually always necessitates weapon swapping.

To be fair, your ranged pet should be able to survive a boss fight without slotting a utility skill to do so. All pets should survive boss fights as part of the basic function of the class.

Very true. No other class has their main mechanic, and 30-40% of their DPS, linked to an AI that tends to die in most boss battles. That is why ranger is so disliked in dungeons.

Did you forget the time Robert Hrouda actually said they did try this and it made pets too tanky? It’s not a technical limition from what I understand, they don’t want pets to have damage reduction against bosses. They’d rather they die than tank.

And the problem is that pet AI can’t do anything but attack/tank. It just isn’t smart enough to do anything else. So they are saying pet against boss = dead pet. And invalidating our pet, our core class mechanic, in the most difficult part of dungeons is just not right.

Covered some points, but avoided many important ones, especially points that are very important for PvE players.

It’s an sPvP podcast. They aren’t supposed to talk about PvE. It’s an unfortunate consequence that there is no platform for discussion about PvE issues (but going off of their actions and comments in this video, the devs don’t know the first thing about the class in a format other than sPvP).

That may be true, but there is only so much longer people will stand for being repeatedly ignored and nerfed in PvE with absolutely no recourse, voice, or dialogue to improve it.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s great that they are pushing the eSports bent. But to destroy game balance everywhere else to do it is not the way to expand your game. This isn’t a game like LoL or SC2 that is PvP only. There are three distinct game modes. Focusing so kitten one to the detriment of both others is very dangerous and risks losing a large portion of your customer base.

I wonder why they can’t increase the longbow range? It wouldn’t be OP because damage is still tied to our pets and people still can avoid arrows. They cant pull the technical card as ballistas carry a 3000 range, so 1800 or 2000 shouldn’t be an issue.

Ballistas only really exist in a few places. Most places in the game may not be designed for that range amount. And rangers would have that range everywhere.

I personally ran a cursory test in the Mists with a SB, a LB, and axes, and with both a rampager amulet and a zerker one. I found that in any range a SB can hit, the SB is the highest DPS weapon, regardless of if you can get the bleeds. In fact the SB did more damage in it’s range than the LB does at max range.

So to all rangers: don’t attack in the 900-1000 range. You will do less than a SB closer or a LB further away.

I’ve had my ele and mes a while, just never really played em, trying em out a but more to see if I like em more than ranger atm, but that LB buff is making me want to slow down on those other profs and see what happens!

crosses fingers c’mon sniper shot! I wanna 2 shot a thief!

I also want the LB to actually become viable. I want reason to wield Kudzu, the only bow legendary worth wielding!

I will still remain a diehard ranger player in PvE until the remove the class from the game. I already have geared 80s of every class but engy (but I’m getting there). I still prefer playing my ranger over them.

But does your team prefer you take ranger? Or will they grumble? Because I hear a lot of grumbling even though I’m very accomplished.

My guild usually prefers me on my ranger, and I’ve had many PUGs surprised by how effective I am with it at well. Especially when I soloed about a quarter of the first stage of the Molten Facility boss.

Not in spvp, this would only be in wvw and pve afaik.

No. That is for sPvP/WvW. They are already tanky as kitten in PvE.
