I’m currently crafting my first ascended gear set for Rev (I loved Herald/Shiro gameplay in the beta) and I have no idea which stat-combo I should go for. Playing WvW mostly, zerg and roaming.

Berserker gear… arrowcarts will probably bring me down quite fast
Knight’s gear… I heard the Rev is vulnerable to condis, so toughness would be second choice, better vitality
Valkyrie gear… Rev already has perma ferocity uptime, do I need more from stats?
Soldier’s gear… too tanky and too little damage?
Celestial gear… too little power to be effective? Are berserker trinkets a good choice additionally?

I’m torn, as you see. Crafting ascended gear is probably a one-time thing for me since it’s hard to come by enough gold via playing WvW mostly.

any advise?

You’re gonna need two different armor sets for that.
Alternatively you can go and craft knights armor, use trinkets + weapons to get the stats you need for zerging. and get another set of trinkets + weapons to get the stats for roaming.

I personally would never go much higher than 16k health on thief or 20k health on engi for example.
Too much vitality won’t be good, some vitality yes (don’t know what rev’s base health is) but generally toughness > vita

engis already got some support potential with HT, Blast Finishers and almost every Combo Field in the game.
Atm RR is almost like a free Backpack Regenerator that has potential to be worth 5x as much healing/sec

Or they could simply change offensive (applied by enemy) revealed to “spotted” debuff like in WoW. You are still in stealth and profit from all stealth buffs but enemies can see your half visible silhuette.

Poison for example doesn’t completely prevent eles or guards from using their heals, why the hell should revealed applied by enemies deny thieves most of their mechanics? Most stupid design idea i saw since first season Cata/MoP in wow.

I heard this idea a couple of times now and I think this would be the best solution for the problem.
Stealth not fulfilling it’s tactical use for a few seconds would be good enough i think.

Thieves basically only have one weapon slot available because currently, Shortbow is the only viable option for your second slot.
Range, AoE, Blast Finisher, Evade+Cripple for Kiting and awesome vertical Mobility (good horizontal Mobility) make it our best weapon and the least nerfed one as well iirc

Does anybody else want this AA to be a normal Auto Attack rather than an AoE?

I can understand that sometimes (especially on stealthed targets) the AoE part may be more useful, but for that #2-#4 are good as well, or the Grenade Kit.
A non-AoE AA on Mortar Kit could be pretty good in order to have some ability to reliably get some ranged dmg off while wielding Hammer on Scrapper

Anyone with me on this one?

Nice suggestions, agree with pretty much each one.
The 240 Radius on a lot of the Firearms and Invention traits… like really?
I can kind of understand the offensive Firearms traits when you use Hammer, but the support ones are just bad.

Does Adrenal Implant not stack with vigor? kitten, I gotta change my traits ._.

They then should probably be made stronger by giving them other effects as well… and a profession (Engineer in this case) shouldn’t have access to 2 different skills and 1 trait that currently reveal…

I think most of these revealed skills are meant as a counter to Mesmer’s OPness… Anet just seems to forget that Thief exists and is not as OP as a Mesmer…

Also, all this reveal is the worst counterplay idea I’ve ever seen. I mean yeah, make it let us pop out of stealth to reduce the stealth spamming, but reduce the amount of skills in total.
With changes to all the Stealth traits to On First Second in Stealth or On First Second in Reveal, to target Stealth camping (= more aggressive gameplay is rewarded), that would be enough counterplay.

Make the out-of-stealth-skills have a cast time that you can dodge though, to encourage more skillful play (or tactical use by stealthing before using the skill).

But like this I’m just thankful that as soon as HoT hits, I’m gonna try Daredevil on a S/D Build which only got access to stealth via C&D… and if that is unviable Herald (Revenant Elite Spec), Shatter or Interrupt Mesmer and Meditation Guard seem nice

As things stand now, the Block and Knockdown portions of Bandit’s Defense have so many limitations that they’re of questionable usefulness:

-Block lasts for one second
-Block only blocks a single attack, in a game drowning in multihit spam
-Knockdown only happens if triggering attack is melee range
-Knockdown happens automatically (have fun hitting pets/phantasms)

Why, exactly, would it be “overpowered” to leave the skill with its current functionality on a 10s cooldown, or improved functionality on a 15s cooldown?

That’s where I see the problem.
I don’t mind the 15s CD, but if you block a melee attack you should be evading while knocking the opponent down.

Giving you a choice when exactly to knock them down or increasing the block duration would probably need it to be changed to a 20s CD

I forsee s/d onlychoice after hot. Fist reason s/d has better utilities: teleport, condie removal, stealth from dagger. Secondly shawdow trait line will be garbage due to the fact, that enemy will always reveal you (revenant dragon or gyro reveal). Stealth rezer no longer will be viable. New meta will be daredevil s/d.

It’s extremely unlikely that any scrappers will be running the gyro elite. The rev’s skill might be a problem, although if they choose to use that skill a lot, they won’t be able to use other skills as frequently (remember, revenants have to keep track of energy as well as cooldowns).

to activate the reveal, revenant only have to sacrifice
a) 2 energy (5 energy/s recharge rate, thats nothing)
b) if it’s active already, perma fury
given that most revenants will probably have other ways of getting some fury as well, it actually isn’t much of a deal for them to reveal us thieves… they don’t have to take any specific trait/skill like engi/ranger, most will run herald anyway (and that’s not because of the reveal)

Could be viable yeah, thinking about DA/TR/DD and Shadow Step, Fist Flurry, Bandit’s Defense… based on the BWE’s that seemed pretty nice for 1v1s and with Bounding Dodger you got some more Damage, which I always missed a bit on S/D compared to Dagger MH builds

Hey guys
As a Thief Main I’ve been solo roaming in wvw quite a bit lately on my guard and I used two builds

I am currently trying out how the Meditation heal is, as in theory it’s Healing Per Second is way higher than Shelter, also offering higher Fury and higher Retaliation uptime while being a bit better against condi builds as well (Smite’s Boon on 24s CD instead of 30s)

While I found the Sinister Build to be quite unique and it’s damage output to be really high, in fights against profession with a lot of condi removes it’s damage lacked quite a bit.
Also, I found the Berserker Build to have better Condi Remove (due to Absolute Resolution), slightly better Mobility (Speed Runes instead of Balthazar) and better Burst… if the enemy would’ve cleansed the Burns quickly, that is.

Which one of these two Builds would you reccomend more?
I do have quite some experience of playing PvP, and while I learned to miss shelter when a zerg decides to go hunting I think some WvW Guards could lend me a hand when it comes to Build viability/counterability by other WvW Meta Builds.

10 sec CD -> Knockdown
10 sec CD -> more adrenaline

It seems as Knockdown is much much better than adrenaline, but they both lead to a set up where the thief starts dishing damage immediately and the Warrior start dishing damage after a few seconds. If anything, Outrage is less predictable.

Also, given the extreme squishyness of the Thief we are all aware of, we should be better of with 10 secs.

That is true, but you shouldn’t make one skill too strong to better Thief’s squishyness. That will only lead to the necessity of Daredevil in order to take a very strong skill that just outbalances the weakness of the core profession (if you take it to an extreme).

Quite similar in playstyle to a build I used to run last winter to summer, for a whole whopping 5 months! (in WvW though)
I would take DA/SA/TR though and use Improvisation or Executioner. Usually I’m using Improvisation on ever single one of my Thief Builds, but as I remember pre patch this build used to lack some finisher Dmg so Executioner would probably be the better choice for this.
Also, in Trickery I’d go for the Haste when attacking from behind, as that is on a 36s CD when combined with Trickster (as opposed to 48s on the actual Haste).
I don’t like Haste as a utility, so I’d then think about using Infiltrator’s Signet or SR… even though I don’t like Roll for Intiative, I see it’s use in such a Trickster Build.
Also, I’d go for Pack Runes over Melandru to get some better Precision + more Swiftness & Fury… I like having perma swiftness and fury in a fight though, which is why I never end up being okay with having Haste over TotC or Trickster over Bountiful Theft (against Guardians it’s sooo good!)

There is a reason why this is not the meta, but you can make it work… as long as you accept not having perma swiftness/Fury

you should increase Outrage’s CD by 5s.

Although I’d still prefer Bandit’s Defense on a 10s CD of course… I just think it would be too strong.

@Thief mains: Playing your alt vs. thieves

If I’m playing my alt Ele (Cele D/D, Champion Magus though) its a great achievement for Thieves to survive… usually my burn even kills them if they decide to run away

When I’m playing on S/F Fresh Air, D/P thieves are pretty hard actually, as I can’t land any skills apart from phoenix, I am usually able to burst them down but if they are decent they have it pretty easy beating me as I can’t do much

When I’m playing Berserker Engi (Champion Genius), Thieves better run, my burst is too much to deal with for them…

On Warrior (Champion Legionnaire), they don’t stand a chance either due to high damage/high toughness/high healing

On my Ranger it’s simply a matter of spotting them, Pewpew, Taunt when they come close and use GS if they are stealthed for a longer time… easy, unless they get a big burst off before i notice them

On my Guard? I won’t even start, it’s sad and I only got 50 hours…

On my Necromancer they actually stand a chance… if I happen to have less than 30% DS, otherwise you can forget the chance again

If you’re standing still, and they’re standing still waiting for you to become unrooted, they’re a sitting duck as well, no?

Or they can heal up or stack might. An Ele can even do both in 4 seconds.

Or use unblockable attacks on a sitting duck.

That’s IF they have those abilities off cooldown to actually do that.

If they use unblockable attacks, you got outplayed, cancel the ability and do something else.

Being able to move while channeling the block won’t prevent unblockable attacks from hitting you, nor will it prevent people from ‘healing up or stacking might’

As it is now, this is by far the strongest block in the game. It’s on a shorter cooldown than the warriors, but on a slightly longer cooldown than the engineers, and both those classes need to trait their shield to get it to a more effective level, Revenants do not.

Engineers Shield – 20 second cooldown un-traited, just blocks.
Warriors Shield – 30 second cooldown un-traited, just blocks.
Revenants Shield – 20 Second cooldown un-traited, blocks & heals for about 4k with no modifiers or healing power, while rooting you.

The Revenants shield is literally a block with an incredibly effective heal comparable to an actual healing utility.

The ability is fine, it does not need any more changes.

I’m actually starting to imagine the things this shield will be able to pull off with some of the traits from Ventari.

Generally I agree with you here, but 2 things need to be considered as well:

  • usually its easier to stack might if you target is not running away from you (eg Elementalist or Guard Staff #4)
  • the Revenant shield also costs 10 energy… #5 is still great though for 1v1s or 1vXs, while running from a zerg i’d probably rather have the Engineer’s shield

  • D/P idk yet but it feels that DD (luckily) doesn’t seem to be too much about D/P, as it doesn’t allow you to dodge in SA
  • P/P should become more viable
  • hopefully gonna work well with S/D and D/D as well

so DD seems like a great line for every weapon set apart from D/P, where it will still have TBD

    Yes indeed.
    If the profession you are comparing with didn’t kill you before, that is.
  • Who is Thief best against?
    Afk players.
    We simply obliterate them.
    They don’t stand a stance. (Y’know, because afk players only stand around? Such pun, much good)
    Worst case scenario, your opponent got some retaliation and it will end in a downstate battle.
  • Can Thief beat anyone in a downstate battle?
    Yes!
    As long as they are afk.
  • Is it worth to try out a Thief?
    Definitely.
    Only when you have experienced real suffering you can enjoy playing a profession. No more qq after that, because you know it could be worse.
  • Which professions do Thieves fear?
    Any class with an A inside.
    - WArrior
    - RevenAnt
    - GuArdian
    - RAnger
    - Angineer
    - NecromAncer

  • Is Mesmer a better Thief?
    Yes. But backstab gets you higher single number! OP!

  • How do I kill a D/D Cele Elementalist?
    You can’t kill an Elementalist, you can only beat them.
  • How do I beat a D/D Cele Elementalist?
    You beat Elementalists by not dying, because for Thief thats the same achievement as winning for other classes. You also have the moral high ground for not having to win against someone in order to beat them.
  • Is Revenants or Thiefs dodge effect better?
    Until BWE3, it’s the Thief’s dodge effect! So hurry and be happy until it may be too late!
  • Can I be useful for a team as a Thief?
    Yes you can! (-Barack Obama)
    How? TBD Try to not rallybot, thats as useful as a Thief can get.
  • What should I learn first as a Thief?
    Because I’m a nice person I’m gonna give you a whole list.
    1. First you should learn the down skills. You will likely spend 50% of your time down or waiting to respawn, so you should get comfortable with them.
    2. Then you should learn to accept when you lost a fight. That is usually as soon as opponents start noticing you.
    3. Next you should learn your most used rotation, named GTFO: SB #5 -> SB #5 -> Heal -> Shadowstep, continue with SB #5
    4. The last thing on this list is to learn to deal with your rage and disappointment towards the Thief profession. The easiest way to deal with this is to roll an Elementalist or Guardian and stomp other Thieves while watching a series or cutting your finger nails.

Stay positive and wait for the next buff/fix to Thief (and for a random precurser drop while you’re at it).

Thats game balance wise.
Weapon swap was needed yes, but a game balance decision.
All the “I want a fluffy dodge” “Work on this animation please” is what makes you spoiled.

Not sure, to be honest. I’ve had a lot of my stealths randomly fail lately, especially the one from Hidden Thief (2s stealth on steal).

Ranger or Engineer hav skills called Sic ’Em and Analyze, Engineer also got a trait called Lock On. These skills/this trait automatically reveal you for 6 seconds without any counterplay (apart from spamming blind or running)/animation.
Lock On actually reveals you when the Engi hits you while in stealth.

Maybe your problem was due to this?

I know that, but I think given that the Reaper AA is pretty fast (could even be 15% faster by traiting for it) and cleaves, I think that trait will be really good for Condi/Cele Reapers…
Even though I hate condition builds, I hope that gives me some reason to play Cele on my necro as well

Daredevil / Trickery/ X?

For PvP, i’m thinking of DA, or Acro. with the introduction of Bounding dodger i’m keen on trying to make an interruption build With S/P, Staff and the trait Impacting Disruption.

DA for more panic strike strike , dmg ,or improvisation.

Acro is for the Pain Response and HtC just in case I get into a tight spot.

Though I have a question: is the skill Fist Flurry the same as FS where if you land it you only get a few seconds to use LS before it reverts back?

About Fist Flurry: yes. All kittens need to hit the target in order for it to turn into a Palm Strike. So just like Flanking Strike, it has a subskill on the condition that it hits.

I got a question for you too, this time about Pain Reponse.

If all 3 of those conditions are on me; Bleed, Poison & Torment. Will Pain Response clean them all at the same time? or just one of them?

Pain Response will clear Burning, Poison and Bleeding when you’re hit below 75% on a 30s ICD…
problem with Pain Response is, it also triggers if you got no conditions at all and get hit while below 75% health

I strongly believe the Initiative increase and Steal CDR decrease should both be made baseline, as they contribute in a vital way both to every other trait line and the general modus operandi of the Thief.

Definitely agree. I feel like I can’t leave out Trickery because what it brings is literally too good to pass up.

Don’t agree on the Steal CDR as every other profession also gets that only via that trait line… difference is though, that every other profession usually has a low CD on their class mechanic, which makes 30% CDR actually 3 seconds. As Steal has a high CD, that one should be reduced by a bit and the Trickery CDR should also be reduced.

Can’t argue with the 3 Ini baseline though, I’d like that as well.

I assume SOM is the name of the physical heal skill? (looked at it, didn’t like it, forgot it’s name)
If so, I’d be interested in your reasons for choosing it over Withdraw

SoM = Signet of Malice, our heal skill that gives a small heal on hit while the signet is not on CD. It’s pretty popular for sustain in PvE, but obviously a non-starter in SPvP.

Hard to catch also restores FULL endurance if stunned. Thats 150. Thats the equal of three steals endurance return and you will get stunned. This makes that skill on the Acro line much more powerful.

Just as Signet of agility becomes much more powerful. (assuming of course regain all endurance means just that)

DD/Acro trickery can be very powerful with loads of damage coming from all those dodges.

This is simply wrong.
If you ever looked at Hard To Catch or SoA, they both clearly state:

  • Endurance Gain: 100

So nope, nothing new there.
The 2nd minor restoring 50 endurance on successful steal will make trickery even better and therefore even more mandatory, and DA just got so many good traits.
DA/Trickery/DD is gonna be the PvP Meta, in WvW you could see a lot of other play styles though…

My apologies. I read endiurance gained 100 as 100 percent. That said these skills still get a boost since if I am at 50eaxisting endurance I can now get it up to 150. (gaining 100 endurance rather then 50)

Now superior sigil of stamina still reads restore all endurance.

No problem. That said I have been weighing Acro against trickery for some time in MY own build and think acro will edge out trickery. The reason for this Is I am going to switch up to SOM as the heal and will lose an Immob break from withdraw. Don’t stop is a beautiful trait. Low cooldown and has saved me so many times. I just prefer to minimize the immobs and stuns that can be thrown my way and the intent is to have 2 immob breaks (rfi the other) along with the three stun breaks.

I assume SOM is the name of the physical heal skill? (looked at it, didn’t like it, forgot it’s name)
If so, I’d be interested in your reasons for choosing it over Withdraw
