No traits? You’re missing steady focus (10% dmg while endurance is full), spotter (5% dmg roughly), vigorous spirits (7% dmg flat), as well hunter’s tactics (10% dmg while flanking) or our free scholar rune Peak Strength (+10% dmg while health is above 90%); you’re missing potention companion’s might + fortifying bond + sigil of strength (25 stack might on pet), or Furious grip (fury on swap).
That’s how ranger brings the DPS.
Few professions are so weak without traits. Consider that in your DPS tests.
When do you have full endurance or above 90% health after the fight has been going on for more than a few seconds? As soon as you take damage or dodge, you lose your % bonus for the rest of the encounter unless you are literally standing off to the side and using a longbow, while also being completely ignored. You must also be flanking for your flanking trait to do anything, which is not difficult for people to avoid in small-group fights. That’s 3 damage increases that are exceedingly unreliable when compared to their counterparts on other professions, which is the compounded upon by the fact that our pets have bad ai, which ties into your example of stacking 25 might on your pet.
Flanking is stupidly easy with ranged weapon, it’s enough to strafe. Bonus from dodges or full hp is much harder to keep, but it depends what we talk about. In PvP total dmg output doesn’t matter that much (burst ftw… but we lack it lol) and in PvE there is no problem to stay at full endurance (esp. with sword) and above 90% hp.
No. This is from a WvW perspective:

:P
I’m afraid this 1 counter to stealth won’t be enough…
lol @ stubbornness
You need to learn to play. I’m trying to help you. But go ahead and keep using cats and birds on moving targets without any crowd control or cripple. You must like not hitting things. Go ahead and pick useless pets for your build, I really don’t care if you lose in battles.
You ever heard of the Yin and the Yang? That’s the ranger and the pet. They should compliment each other. If you’re going to build Yin and the Yin, I can’t really feel sorry for you.
lol @ not knowing who you are replying to.
First off, how do you know I need to learn to play? Do you know me? Second, I don’t need your “help” as I did not ask for it.
Maybe you are trying to “school” someone else in this thread. Take it to them, not me.
Secondly, I don’t use birds or cats. If someone would like to use them, good for them. The point I am making is….a person should not have to use a certain pet in order to be effective. ALL pets should be. Anet dropped the ball on moving targets and pets ability to hit them.
Fanboisim statements like yours confirms there are plenty of dolts that just take mediocre mechanics and deal with them, and use the tired old statement of “l2p” to compensate.
The only thing your post is missing is calling someone “son”. But keep it up, I am sure you can get there.
Pet has to fit build. It’s like saying “I don’t care I traited my warrior for GS, I want to have top results with hammer”.
And just because someone doesn’t agree with you, doesn’t make him fanboy. Unless you are hater lol
And why is HS change a nerf? For me it’s huge buff. I never saw my allies stand in it for more than 5 sec, so why would I need 15? Not to mention when I throw it when we restack, and we have to move away to start stacking might, because HS stays too long lol.
After this change at least I’ll be able to use it better as condi removal.

Anet has said in the past that pets account for roughly 40% of our damage this was before the pet damage nerf.
Add to it some of our weapon (LB, GS, OH axe) got dmg boost.
Ranger has crit dmg in prec tree, so going GC he has 30% more crit dmg than warr.
Also, tooltips lie :p
Not true.
People already proved, that our dps with sword WITHOUT pet is comparable to other classes. Actually, it’s even good.
Btw. what does cancel this skills effect on pet? I know it disappears if I give him any other command (F1, F2 or F3), or ofc when it dies or gets swapped.
But… I was sure it also had some problems with skills that applied buffs to pets (GS 5., LB 3., SG 3. etc), but after I checked it today, it seems this part works ok: I can give swiftness with my LB or fury with speargun to my pet AFTER using Sic’em, and it doesn’t disappear. Is it my memory failing, or it got “ninja fixed”?
Play what you like. Every single patch can turn everything upside down.
It’s already proved, that ranger sword dps WITHOUT pet is very good compared to other classes. Just because it’s harder, doesn’t mean it’s less viable. Not like PvE is hard anyway lol
Is it good time to be ranger? Well, surely the best since headstart
For me it was always good time, but for some it never will be, and sooner they accept it, the better.
Today I discovered I can clear Kolvan lords room siege from hill nearby with my LB
Siege was in middle and on closer side, I guess I wouldn’t hit it if it was on the other side of lord.
Just try strafing while shooting. After all the projectile speed boosts, it’s really easy (compared to few months ago) to hit targets at 1000+
FB sometimes can hit things we can’t, because it’s aoe.
Ranger changes look cool, but I still miss 1 very important thing: Longbow users have to choose 2 of 3 Marksman traits (Piercing Arrows, Eagle EyE, Remorseless). No other weapon has such problem – when you want to spec fully into weapon, you always can pick all related traits. I think it’s REALLY needed to either merge 2 of those traits, or move one of them to 1 tier so we can pick them all.
I’d gladly try remorseless, but I simply can’t use LB without piercing and eagle eye
I can’t understand how they could give us more traits than we can slot for a single weapon…
In WvW you can add taking down some sieges others can’t, like inner cannon on garri WG when you are still raming outer.
lol
I actually like all the ideas. Maul buff surely would be nice, but it’s still just numbers play, and it won’t out-dps warrior GS or our sword anyway, so it’s not exactly change I’d want.
What about pets? Boosting their hp in PvE maps sounds good too, but it’s hard to say how it’d work in WvW. I think they’d still be too weak for zergs, and this boost isn’t that much needed in other parts of it. The only place it sounds good are dungs – but would 70% boost be enough for all this hard hitting aoe?
And, sadly, none of this points makes ranger any more wanted in organized WvW zergs.
And another problem my idea would fix: they should gives us a group of unkillable, not attacking pets, that only support.
I play mostly WvW and when and now I’m making 2nd legendary lol
So no.
I’m no skill noob and I like killing underleveled and undergeared asuras. Go sPvP if you want equal fights.
I also think it can’t crit, but that doesn’t change fact it’s great sigil. I use it in PvE and WvW on LB.
So in short now: what @up said + personally I’d just ignore them (can easily run as ranger), as they are poor loosers abusing broken mechanic. Also, if they aren’t hidding in tower or sth, they are harmless.
+ GS 4. when you expect back stab, followed with 3 -> 5 -> 2..
First and foremost, you can’t run from a thief. They can shadowstep great distance.
Against a thief who do the cheap C&D BS combo, their steal is 1500FT. Good luckSecond, Block is useless again backstab, You can block from your back but your reflect is to the FRONT. Basically you will just eat his backstab since he can stab you again after you block.
First: nope. They nearly always open with steal. I use swoop. They waste ini to get close, I turn, use LB 4. -> LB 3. If it’s not enough I can also use LR as gap maker. Trust me, not many thieves can catch me, and surely not perma stealth built ones (of which we speak here).
2nd: nope again. I will block backstab, and if you know how to use it (in other words, don’t hold RMB), your char will turn around and hit enemy – it even works against stealthed ones. Confirmed by experience of 1000s (to be exact over 2k) hours of playing my ranger.
About 6 vs 2 thieves: I said I understand they didn’t kill them, but I can’t understand how they could die. If they only tried to rez eachother as soon as they get downed, they could have bunkered like that for hours.

About SB as condi weapon: notice the attack speed also helps a lot. With trait and sigil of earth, you can proc both those bleeds every ICD. SB can make great bleeds if you don’t flank
Meh, I wrote long post and forum threw error in my face when I clicked to reply -.-

Also, 6 guys finished by 2 thieves means those 6 were bad. It’s normal they couldn’t kill thieves, but dying to them is fail. You always rez faster than someone is finishing – and I don’t think they used quickness.

Even if our GS dealt as much dmg as warrior’s one, that wouldn’t make us wanted in zergs. What we need is some addional utility, not just bigger numbers. Adding blast finisher would make it interesting option for raid composition.
+1 Durz
kitten 15letters
Maul + Blast Finisher = more love for ranger in melee trains
Good post, but don’t get your hopes up. I’m playing ranger since betas (or since GW1 if it matters) and most important thing I learned from it, is to kitten forums. Ppl can only moan here. Trying to change it is just bad for your brain :P
But +1 about sharing builds. I’m visiting this forum only to check if someone found something I missed after balance (and I belive I’m not only one). Stopping sharing will leave only one kind of topics on this forum…
If you are so casual, then why do you need it now? The minimal increase in stats matter only in hardcore runs and addional AR would be needed only on 50+ fotm lvls.
Also, prices are sick now, because many ppl jumped on it. Just use your brain and sell mats, wait month then buy them again for 1/4 of current price.
Also, when I see someone comparing GW2 to any “grindy” MMOs, I strongly doubt if such person even played them or if is serious.
I mostly use LB. My DPS has been buffed by 20%. I also run with GS, which also was buffed, but for some reason people can only remember how it was nerfed in beta.
That’s the reason I avoid this forum and visit it only to check if someone discovered something new. Most of the time it’s just lying (yes, I intended to use this word) how pets got 50% nerf (50% was only 1 skill on medium CD), how we never get any buffs (LB and GS were strongly buffed) or how every viable build gets nerfed (and I still run good old trapper that was never touched by devs).
No idea about your pets, but mine got 27% dmg nerf, not 50%.
And tbh, as much as I don’t like being nerfed, I’m happy with anything that lowers pet share in my total dmg. If we get nerfed too much, sooner or later we will get buff, and there is hope it will be ranger dmg, not pet.
And before talking kitten about how our dmg is weak, look at sword dps WITHOUT pet.
Do you know whether or not your pet gets the speed buff from the runes as well?
I’d love to know it too. But if I had to guess, I’d say no. On the other hand I use LB, so if I wanted I can keep perma swiftness on pet ^^
Still, waiting for someone to test it.
I’d gladly go for it, but no chance. Totally op. Imagine dancing naked while pet solo anything you want.
I think more realistic option would be a pet that is immune to everything, but also doesn’t deal dmg or run away – a kind of hamster sitting on your arm popping buffs, heals or w/e on CD.
Meh, what about something with less legs?
You should be happy he focused you. As ranger you had biggest chances to survive, thanks to big amount of dodges.
About skills, imo RaO is nice if you get closed in his bubble. GS 4. is also imba, coz you can block all hits and wait for bubble to open.
I always use piercing. There is nothing more annoying than critter blocking your arrow, especially considering LB RoF.
I’m not really into traps, but GS? Hell yeah! Evade every 3rd attack is imba. I’m always opening with LB and then join melee train with GS, and the only thing I miss in this playstyle is something more than spamming 1., muddy isn’t enough. Running in and dropping traps isn’t exactly what I expected when I started ranger 12 months ago lol
About skins, get Infinite Light
Imo best sword ever.
Hopefully you just gave them idea how to fix pets
Wait, what? When I shoot from tower I hit targetets that I couldn’t hit from ground – best place to see it is lake tower during breakout.
Hitting moving targets isn’t that big problem, it can be partially fixed by strafing in right way. The biggest weakness of LB is lack of real burst. I guess it’d be OP to burst like thief, but with 1500 range, but if rapid fire dealt 50% more dmg…
I made Kudzu (no lodes needed) in ~5 months since beginning of game. I had luck to make prec in MF (used rares I made myself from t5 mats I found – no buying), but I didn’t farm ANYTHING. I just played. I bought and dropped mats, but everything was from normal play – WvW, fractal lvl progression (it was new back then) and some casual dung running. Doable? Doable.
I was away for most part of this LS, so I thought I’ll just skip gauntlet, then I decided to give it a try…
It all took me ~4h (Liadri alone 2h), but that was great
I did it on ranger. I was too lazy to change build, so I ran with my 30/25/15/0/0, only replaced LB with SB and changed utilities to have sig of stone, LR and 25% run sig. Also, equiped zerk trinkets, but left PTV armor.
Biggest problem for me was time limit. In this fight my pet simply didn’t exist, so I was kitten since beginning and worried I won’t be able to do it, but in the end, thanks to SB (epic weapon for this fight), I made it pretty quickly.
I’ll admit I was happy after it, but it still lacks to feeling after some WoW raid bosses. Tho it’s on the good way
I don’t know what I expected from this topic. I, for one, respect AM numbers. Would any of GH or Dzag players just stop playing if we outmanned enemy? Or what, maybe when we saw smaller group during any of matchup, we delegated some forces to stand back to give them fair fight? Stop this BS. Power is power, and if anything, they can only be proud of their numbers.
Shame I didn’t see this topic 2 days earlier
I forced my way through all bosses with my standard LB build (only swapped to SB for Liadri).
Hi.
Today when we took bay I:
- attacked gate
- attacked guards (got wxp and loot from them)
- attacked lord (got wxp and loot)
- stood in circle whole time
And I didn’t get reward.
It’s not first time (tho, today whole game is very laggy, so this one could be blamed on it). It often happens in hills – 2 times in this matchup already.
Are there any ‘tricks’ to make sure I’ll get it? I always (nearly always lol) fully participate in siege, kitten gate if ordered, build siege, kill players, guards and lord (and get rewards from them).
If it’s known bug, then it’d be nice to have confirmation that devs know about it
For WvW I use drake (used swamp, now testing ice) and wolf on swap. Drake is best pet I can think of for soloing camps and wolf saved me several times when I got downed (sometimes by fearing enemy off cliff lol). I don’t bother to change them when I join zerg, they will be dead anyway >.>
In PvE I change every fight. Mostly drakes and cats, sometimes ranged ones.
s/tPvP? Canines all the way! Hyiena and wolf.
Don’t touch my barrage! ;<
as an LB ranger i go 30 in marksmanship for piercing arrows and eagle eye (because theyre both master tier major traits)
Same here. If I could have both those traits in 1 slot, I’d be happy. I can’t live without 1500 range or piercing.
