You made the game more enjoyable and amazing , but you forgot to update/fix our minions AL and other issues.
Many necros have chosen this class for their undead armies , however they get disappointed from minion bugs.

Busting the Myth of Useless Pets

Pet Roles

Now here’s where most people encounter problems. There are people that use pets for the wrong purposes and complain that they are useless. The way I see it, choosing pets is just like choosing which set of gear your going for. We have several pets that great for certain roles and absolutely horrible in others. They can be categorized into offensive, defensive and support, while some are a mix of 2 categories.

Offensive pets would include the Feline, Drake, Shark and Bird Families. Felines and Birds, in particular, can be likened to glass cannons as they have the highest precision of all pets, but they also have the worst toughness and vitality. Seeing 2k crits from these guys are pretty common and account for a LOT of Ranger DPS.

Defensive pets would include Ursine, Canine and Boar Families. They have respectable defensive stats, average Power and Precision and their abilities are mostly designed to negate damage or to disable enemies. Special mention goes to the hyena because it can summon more knockdown machines for you!

Support pets would be pets that are designed to either assist you, or hinder enemies. These would be the Moa Family, which is basically a walking buff station, the Spider family with a plethora of immobilizes and conditions, and the tanky Devourer family with their racial knockdown abilities and condition based activated skills.

Picking the appropriate pet for the situation is something a lot of players lack, thus they cry that “pets are useless.” One of these scenarios is when defending or attacking a tower or castle in WvW, melee pets that attack defended doors die. Of course it will, not even players can survive 2-3 Elementalists spamming spells on that. In this situation, opting for a ranged pet would be better as it is away from the AoE damage that is intended to destroy rams. Sometimes it can even hit defenders up on the walls!

So now you’ve captured the tower and you’re defending it. You then find that Ranged pets cannot hit enemies below walls because their range is too short and have now become useless. Melee pets sent to the zerg will die in an instant and are now useless as well. The appropriate pet to switch to here would be Moas as they can buff your fellow defenders on the wall and still be safe.

Basically, I’m saying appropriate pets should be used whenever needed. Pets should be swapped around as necessary. We’ve got over 10 pet families and over 30 pets to choose from, so we have a LOT of options! (Barring the Drake family as they’re bugged to only use one attack atm).

Closing:

If this little guide still didn’t make you like pets, I strongly suggest trying it anyway. Nothing like test driving a car to get a feel for it yourself. Just keep in mind all the problems and the workarounds I’ve listed here while doing it. If you still don’t like pets, but still prefer ranged combat, maybe a Rifle Warrior would be a better profession for you. Pets are here to stay for Rangers and they won’t go away (even if you stow them!)

I have played 400+ hours on my ranger and I’ve tried several builds on the Ranger. I dabbled a bit in sPvP and spent a modest amount of time in dungeons and WvW so I experienced pretty much everything the game has to offer on my Ranger. Everything I listed here is from personal experience and influenced by the posts I’ve read on the GW2 main forums and on r/Guildwars2.

Honestly , I got 3 devourers and a fern hound( for healing ).
They are the best defensive pets as they got the hugest amount of Toughness.

Though I used to run much higher Healing Power, I agree that tons of Healing Power does help the symbol shine, even if just at a minor rate. Every bit counts, especially if you add that healing with Regen and Virtue of Resolve (+Altruistic Healing in some builds, and very possibly, Writ of the Merciful, which works well with the mace symbol.)

I have tested and calculated the healing from both Writ of Merciful and Writ of Persistence , I found that Writ of Persistence gives more healing ( if u are using faithful strike ) than Writ of Merciful does.

Yeah, the formula is 15+((Level^2) x 0.05)+(Healing x 0.18)

So for example a Level 80 guardian with 1000 points in healing would heal for:
15+320+180=515

@ 1533 healing is what i runned in the past wich heal 610, not worth IMO.

honestly though, it is best to remember you don’t have to go to a trainer to re-slot skills, and switch between the three you have based on the situation. small roaming? hide in shadows, large group or supply camp? malice up. everything has it’s place.

How can I re-slot skills ? which trainer ?

Signet of Malice -
*Generally for soloing mobs
*Or when you’re not the holding aggro and there’s DoT conditions

Withdraw -
*Really useful in PvP
*a 3rd (or 4th) roll that’s a giant one
*removes crippling and some other conditions, but I really only care for crippling

Hide in Shadows -
*Also useful in PvP
*Allows for a follow-up backstab
*Allows for escape
*Good for exploration

I don’t think I’m missing anything. But these are just overviews.

But Signet of Malice active skill gives more than hide in the shadows does >>
signet of malice heals for 3,275 ( x2 as its recharge is half hide in the shadows ones ) , while hide in the shadows heals for 5,240 + 520 ( from Regeneration ).
So the total healing from each of them is >>
signet of malice > 6550
hide in the shadows > 5760

Things Necro pets do…

1.)pulling mobs as i try to run through a zone, putting me in combat.
2.)killing quest mobs that I am not supposed to kill, such as owls for a certain task.

What i suggest is you give Necros an f2 skill that just explodes all active pets, i don’t even care if it deals damage, i just want them to go away. the fact that the only way to get rid of my pets is log out and back in is literally ruining my experience with this game.

You can hide all your minions by clicking on the arrow that appears on the top of their icons , then click on the minion icon again.

1) Power coefficients on most skills need to go up. So many skills do less damage than dagger autoattack it creates a situation where you don’t want to use skills except for defensive purposes.
2) Tweaks to major and minor traits. An overhaul to the Death Magic line minors to not force minions on us.
3) Slight changes/buffs to Axe.
4) Lifesteal buffs.
5) Minion AI fixes.

It means that its heal ticks 5 times over ~two seconds as oppose to a burst heal like Signet of Resolve.

Do you mean that it will heal me 1305(x5) within 2 seconds (3262.5 per second ) ?
If you mean that so it’s useless for soloing and Signet of resolve is much better.

Forceful Explosives increases the radius of all bombs and mines EXCEPT for the two traited bombs, which it renders nearly useless.

Wow – that totally explains it. Thank you very much for that research, I didn’t think once to test the radius.

Sucks though, because I really want that increased bomb radius in the build I do. I’m going to have to untrait it and see how it plays, maybe I can concentrate on being more accurate with my placement.

Necromancer’s Minions being destroyed when changing forms is something that will eventually be fixed.
I remember somebody from Arenanet commenting on it before.

With that said it’s annoying how Flesh Golem won’t work Underwater.
It’d be pretty neat if the Fleshie got automatically replaced by an Undead Kraken or something while underwater…

It can be replaced by kraken , but making flesh golem amphibian is much better( like all minions ). They can also replace the wurm with snake( underwater ).

I’m talking about my high-level characters as I forgot what choices I have picked for them.
I finished their personal stories long time ago and I don’t want to repeat their choices in my other characters.
Is there any way to see my high-level story log again ?

It doesn’t matter what level you are. You can always see your story log by opening the Hero panel (pressing H) and pressing the third icon down in the shape of a star.

Click on the first step (“I’m [whatever you named your character]”) and it will tell you all the character creation choices you made.

To see what missions you chose later, you can just look through your other story steps.

Evasive Powder Keg - no damage

The bug you are experiencing comes from the trait Forceful Explosives, number III in the explosives traitline, which causes the two traited bombs to almost never deal damage.

What happens when you equip this trait is that it reduces the range of the Evasive Powder Keg to roughly ~30 radius. In other words, the bomb must explode directly INSIDE of your enemy for it to do any damage.

This trait also causes the bomb created by Kit Refinement and equipping the bomb kit to suffer from the same issue.

The issue is nonexistent with the trait Forceful Explosives unequipped. In that case, the Kit Refinement bomb and the Evasive Powder Keg bomb both have about a radius of ~150 units.

It’s a rather large problem because almost every bomb-based build should be taking this trait.

If you want to test radius, go to the Heart of the Mists in PvP and test out Evasive Powder Keg radius on the dummy golems. I can get my traited bombs to deal damage only if the bomb is placed directly inside of them, which is a near impossibility in both PvE and PvP.

But Forceful explosives trait increases the area-of-effect by 50% and you are saying that it reduces its radius instead !!
So why do engineers get this trait ?

In addition to that, if you view the very first part of your story log (“This is my story.”) it flat out shows what you picked including the icons of what they looked like during character creation.

Guys !!!
I’m talking about my high-level characters as I forgot what choices I have picked for them.
I finished their personal stories long time ago and I don’t want to repeat their choices in my other characters.
Is there any way to see my high-level story log again ?

The kit refinement bomb that drops when you equip your bomb kit is also finicky. I tested it for a while in the mists—it seems to count as a melee attack, and only works if you are facing your enemy. Could be the same thing here?

Damage is so low anyways I don’t think it matters whether it works or not.

But when you trait your build as a bomber ( explosion line ) , it will make a difference.

I’ve done a lot of research here on the forums and elsewhere before posting this. I’ve seen one other person report this, and he was essentially told “no, you’re wrong, mine works”.

On evade while IN COMBAT, my Asura Engineer with Evasive Powder Keg does indeed drop a bomb, and the bomb does explode…but it does no damage. I’ve tested it as thoroughly as I know how…I spent two hours yesterday engaging mobs (single, multiple, big groups, etc), do nothing but evade multiple times for 30 seconds or so (with a little running around). I have managed to drop kegs that have exploded directly in the middle of a large pack of mobs that did absolutely nothing but make a nice little flash, some smoke and the explosion sound bite.

Not a single time in two hours did I get a powder keg to do damage.

Any ideas?

Nope mate , it’s working perfectly , however its damage isn’t as strong as http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Bomb .( I never let my endurance reach more than 50%)

I have heard that it will be a big updating during December , we may get our chance there.

If they fixed minions AL we will be super !

Nope, nope, let’s take it back to Guild Wars 1. When you have a pet skill equipped, you get a F2 ability, Blood of the Master. Take some damage, maybe even a short self-bleed, heal all minions and give them regen for a short time.

You have forgotten the main healing source to our minions which was http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Blood_Bond ( heal them with each hit , heals more if the foe died during the curse )

I am curious what the community thinks of this idea.

Instead of giving minion regen, make it so the Blood Fiend also heals minions. This supports the MM build while keeping the game play mostly similar for power/condi builds (while giving them a hybrid MM option).

Anet can make different option as allowing us to use mark of blood any time on our minions ( without the existence of foes ).

I’ve made suggestions for Banners before, like having an Adrenaline skill but I like this as well, not necessarily the call thing but getting another skill once it’s used. Something like:

Banner of Strength: Grant allies in range 5 stacks of might for 30 seconds. Cooldown: 60 seconds

Banner of Discipline: Grant allies in range 15 seconds of Fury. Cooldown: 60 seconds

Banner of Defense: Grant allies in range 10 seconds of protection. Cooldown: 60-Banner recharge not sure.

Banner of Tactics: Heal allies in range for 2000 (gains 1 point per point in healing power). Cooldown 60 seconds

Battle Standard: Grant allies in range 10 seconds of Stability. Cooldown: Banner recharge.

Made these on the spot, I’m sure they can be improved

These can be their burst skills , however if we get the ability to call them , we will be able to use 4 banners at once which is awesome.

Banners shouldn’t scoot across the battlefield like walking Disney broomsticks. Im fine with having to carry them but I agree I wish they looked better. Also give us an F1 ability for them! Better stats to offset losing weapon stats would be nice also and would make it worth carrying and using as an actual viable weapon choice.

I didn’t say that they should be mobile !!!
Just give us the ability to call them to come closer ( teleport to us ).

As necros got a secondary skill for each minions utilities , I suggest that our banners should have a secondary skill which allow us to order them to come closer to us.
It’s Cons:
- We won’t be forced to carry them all the time just to stay in their range.
- The thieves that steal our banners won’t be a problem as we can call the banner to come next to us instead of them.
- It will be good in dungeons to spread their effects/buffs .
