Question:
Will we finally get a build system that I can clicka button and it instantly puts on my traits/skills where I have programmed them to be? Build Rememberer… I forget what it’s commonly called.
That’d be spiffy.
Happy for you, OG, that you’ve never wanted/needed to stow your pet or not have it out during combat or during a jump puzzle or just in general. I have quite often wanted to stow or perma-stow my pet depending on the situation… Just give me the option to do it, Anet! But, I digress.. I doubt they’ll make the F5 that perma-stow although anything is possible… but it is arguably reasonable for them to give us another open keybind like they did for active/passive. I think that route is much much more likely and quite possible when HoT goes live.
I wouldn’t bank on that Fluff, unless they have bought some new super AI code…. and it’s actually SEPARATE from the normal mob AI. Which… I highly doubt. Although, I must admit with the new information I am really curious as to what will happenwith a 6/6/0/0/6 build.. I think it might be more DPS than the current 6/6/2/0/0 or 6/6/0/2/0 builds. I think, though, that depending on what they do with spirits, 6/6/0/6/0 might be the way to go for party buffs and still putting out the DPS. As stated in the Jon Peters interview since Specializations are going to center on CC/Support it may be better to go into the 6/6/0/0/6 with the last six being the Druid trait line. I suspect, and again just taking a wild guess here, that Druid support is going to be stronger than what Spirits can/will provide. If such is the case I’ll be running zerker gear, and 6/6/0/0/6. I’ll pick all the traits that increase damage and buff the party through boons. I have a feeling the BM trait bonus will be built into the trait line as a base stat increase.
Well, the trailer doesn’t specifically point out what the Druid profession mechanic is. Yes, there is a pet, but it doesn’t show HOW the pet is used. I think it was put there to illustrate that it is a Ranger—>now—>Druid, but that’s just me. Not to mention since it has not been spelled out the pet could now, when Specialized as a Druid, be tied to Utility Skills or Weapon Skills or Elite Skills and not as a profession mechanic. I mean, until they state specifically what the Druid prof mechanic is, we can speculate anything.
Not likely that we get a new F2 skill. If you look in the Control Options you’ll see there’s a blank F5 now. It’s likely that it’ll get use with the Druid profession mechanic and/or as the F5=Stow/Unstow keybind that we need. Personally, after much thought (about five minutes total), I think they’re going to go the Auroa route with pets and using the F5 button to initiate it. I don’t think it’s going to be a “Transform & Merge with Pet” I think the pet will disappear and you’ll get a buff for a limited amount of time. I would love, however, just the ability to perma-stow on my Druid as my F5 if we are indeed keeping the forced AI companion… I’m still holding hope that in a future Elite Specialization they’ll remove the pet completely. I’m guessing for the next expansion.

Indeed. I think it might be a toss up between Power+Spirit build and Power+Beastmaster build to which one is going to output more DPS… Without knowing anymore than we do I’m leaning towards Power+BM be more DPS and Power+Spirit be more support.

Think about this, currently the go to build for pretty much every class is DPS. The reason for this is it’s too easy for a pure DPS build to get enough survivability while spreading out their points. If in the new system you have to sacrifice more of that survivability in order to get the best possible DPS then it will create incentive for other people to actually run a support build. As they will be needed in the team in order to make up the difference on the survivability of the DPS in the group.
This will actually make other builds viable in the system. Will this new system destroy some of the current builds? Most likely yes, and that is the beauty of it. People will be forced to come up with new builds in order to be relevant. This new system should allow more builds to be viable, rather than everyone just going straight DPS all the time.
So see, you’re just kind of looking at this all wrong my friend.
I think you are incorrect. All builds are currently viable, but only one build is optimal. That won’t change with this new system either. You’ll still have tons of viable builds, but you will still only have one optimal build. Until the goal is no longer to kill something to win, then DPS will always be king. Now, what it has the potential of doing is widening the gap between those that can play the DPS build and those that can’t. Those that can’t will be forced out of the DPS builds because they’ll be constantly dieing. Those who can will continue to do so. As I see it, the DPS herd will be thinning by forcing bads to play non-zerker builds…
I still want a gear/trait check function to know if those that are running zerker gear/builds really are. I mean, it’s obvious in fights if the entire team is running zerker or not, but harder to tell by individual.

This change rexts my Ranger build I have been using for awhile. I won’t be able to use my 6/5/1/2/0 build anymore… Such shame
I’m surprised by how little people value the idea of taking a third grandmaster trait.
That’s because ANet did a terrible job at balancing them. Many are greatly outclassed by Adept traits.
Yup… That’s why I’m not excited about it. Most of the grandmaster traits of Ranger are terribad. What makes them terribad? Well, IMO, if they aren’t about increasing damage they’re bad because in PVE its about either increasing your own DPS or increasing your parties DPS. I’m also referring specifically to PVE, not WVW or PVP.
(edited by TheFantasticGman.9451)
Again, they can’t grandfather you in. The best they can do is give you all the points you would have earned under the new system and let you spend them just like anyone else.
Well, to me that’s pretty much grandfathered in if they are going to give me all the points I would have earned under the new system. I’d be ok with that. Besides, I only use 1-2 builds on each of my toons since the only things I do in GW2 is WBT and Fractals/Dungeons… So… Nevermind, I just run DPS build and that’s it so as long as I have enough points to do that, I’m good.
Is there a meta build for ranger? As i understood our class is so broken that was impossible to get a build to work properly..
You must be reading just Darkness’s posts and none others lol
Did you read the Jon Peters MMOgamers interview?
He said that the Specializations are going to be aimed at CC and Support builds. I suspected as much for the Ranger at least and I’m sure I’m not the only one that suspected the Druid will be CC/Support. That being said if the Druid elite Specialization gets rid of or substationally changes the pet (and from the sounds of the interview it will get rid of the pet or change it substantionally) I’ll be rolling two DPS increasing trait lines and the Druid trait line… but… I really can’t say until I see all the traits and which ones will specifically change damage.
From what I read of the blogs and the interview, if you want to go Druid Elite Specialzation you will lose access to another trait line. In the end we will still only have access to 3 trait lines regardless if you chose the specialzation or not. This was not entirely unexpected. So, now it’ll be 6//6/0/6/0 for me once the expansion drops…. might finally be able to put spirits into my power build… or … Just too many unknowns to hardcore speculate right now.
Hey Sarahfull. I actually ran a 50 with you the other day when I was on my ranger, Zeddicus Zenzedi.
Standard Operating Procedure in Fractals (especially the high levels) is to keep the pet on passive until needed, then use F1 and F3. I also keybound my active/passive button as well to use on my Naga to make it easier not having to use the F1 and F3 as much.
During Mai cannon phase the pet is guaranteed dead. Nothing we can do about this until the give the pet AOE resistance. Don’t forget pets can body block her teleport skill if they aren’t dead.
On the Grawl fractal your elite, Entangle, will hold ol’ demon grawl in place during phase as well.
Snowblind the pet needs to be kept on passive 100% of the time for the stealth trick to work… and no matter the pet on the high levels they will die during bonfire phase if done without stealth.

I hope they’re fixing shouts on ranger to be instant cast like on my guard and warrior.
….and we are still BEASTmasters… not RANGErs.
You are not a beastMASTER unless you specialise with it. Rangers also have melee weapons, Ranging is not about attacking from RANGE.
As long as the Ranger is forced with the Pet AI as it’s Profession mechanic it is a BeastMaster regardless if you trait into the Beast Mastery line…
Either way I’m waiting to see what the CC/Support Druid line (because given Jon Peter’s interview that’s what it is going to be) has in it, but I can guarantee you that my Ranger will still be a DPS Ranger. If the Druid trait line gets rid of the pet though I’ll go DPS traits and get some CC/Support traits as well from the Druid line.
What’s most interesting to me about it is how the consolidation of the traits is going to play out for all the classes, since I have all of the toons and do spend quite a bit of time now on my guard, warrior, ele, and engie.

Pugs usually take the easiest/failsafe route, not the fastest.
Agreed as this has been my experience for the most part. Every now-and-then somebody will get the wild hair.
So much for having maxed out Revenants within minutes of the expansion going live.
Maxed out everything? No. Maxed LvL 80? Yes.
I will flip the kitten table if they don’t grandfather existing characters into the new system.
Same here. I ain’t doing that again.
(edited by TheFantasticGman.9451)
So, the way I read the blogs was that to get the Specialization trait line you have to give up another trait line so that at any one time you only have 3 trait lines you have access to. Is my understanding correct?
I also read into the Jon Peters interview that the Specializations are more geared towards Control and Support. Is that true of all Specializations? Because if so I’ll just stick to my DPS builds on everything (except my support guardian).
As long as entangle works on the grawl shaman … whatevs.

Any content so challenging that skilled organized groups have to switch to tanky gear would be so challenging pugs or bad players would have no chance of completing it.
Quoted for the unadulterated truth of the statement.
@ fantastic, : Ive been long around enough in this game, do your homework and look at the leaderboards, then you should know that I’m surely no newbie here …
Leaderboards? PVP? I don’t check that worthless crap. So, there’s no homework to do since those junk “leaderboards” are meaningless to me. Patch notes, on the other hand, are important to all games modes and where they said the vigor nerf. If you have been around (or done YOUR homework) as long as you say you’d know that.
99.9998% of suggestion threads are bad. This one is no exception.
And how long have you been around?
“2) Increase for everyone the Endurance Regeneration Speed by 20%
Dodging should be possible a bit more frequently to be able to actively mitigate damage.”
Uh, I guess you don’t know, but they nerfed everybody’s vigor by 25% awhile back or something like that. I use to have constant (read: near infinite when I needed them) dodges on my Ranger with the endurance regen trait…. Not anymore.
RNG is RNG is RNG
Sometimes it gives, most of the time it doesn’t.
Dang. Thought this thread would be dead by now.
What you’re dealing with is cast time on the F2… Horrid things those cast times on the F2s are.
If you are going to say it’s possible, well anything is possible. Like, sometimes between the video and HoT release, they just delete ranger altogether and put it in the too-hard basket. It’s possible.
I doubt they will change the class mechanic at all. Specialisation most likely has nothing to do with class mechanics. You’ll equip a staff and druid utility skills and the trait line will change to suit, you’ll equip the traits to suit them. Most likely it.
Why would they change the class mechanic of every class too?
Uh, have you read any interviews since PaX? They’ve said they’re changing or replacing the class mechanic for every class for the Specializations. That’s confirmed 100%. Ranger class mechanic will remain as it currently is. What’s not 100% confirmed is what the Druid class mechanic is going to be… or any of the other classes.. and in the interview Colin gave he confirmed that the Ranger mechanic is changing for the Druid.
From the “Ranger Pet” thread under the HoT subsection
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/hot/Ranger-Pets/first
Just look at the wiki for it: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Specialization
“Specializing keeps base profession skills and traits in addition to the new ones provided by that specialization, while offering new profession mechanics or changing existing ones2”
From the interview:
PCG: Another thing you announced was profession specialisations. The one you revealed was the Druid. That the Ranger was getting a staff weapon. Beyond having a different weapon, how different will the druid specialisation be from a ‘standard’ Ranger?
Colin: We’re really trying to make it feel like it’s almost a sub-profession or a secondary profession if you will, and not just a new set of a couple of skills. It’s not just opening up the capacity to use a staff. When a ranger becomes a druid, they have an entire new set of skills and traits that come available to them. And their profession mechanic changes as well. That’s true with all the specialisations. You actually play the profession differently, not just in skills and traits, but in the core mechanics of those professions. Some of them will change an existing profession, some of them might give them entirely new profession abilities and remove other ones. It really varies specialisation to specialisation, but it really should feel like you are playing a new version of your old profession. And players can actually mix and match a little bit. If you are playing as a Druid you will be able to use a lot of the Ranger’s skills, and you can actually slot them in to make a lot of creative builds. But a Ranger can not use any of the stuff a Druid has unless they become a Druid.
So, going by what Colin said… It’s going to change, but he doesn’t spell out specifically how. He was speaking in generalizations across all professions, not just Ranger. I also think the Druid is going to be, unfortunately, tied to a pet. I’m expecting a future Specialization that does away with the pet.
(edited by TheFantasticGman.9451)
Frankly having turrets auto destruct when an engineer moves to far away is plenty.
As long as that’s a PVP only change so that my PVE play is unaffected I could live with that.
I doubt it’s going the pet will completely go away in any way until there’s new blood at Anet that thinks differently about the Ranger. Even then if it happens it’ll happen to a future Specialization, that much I’d bet on. Too much QQ if it were to change on the Ranger.
If they really just wanted to listen to the playerbase they could send ingame surveys.

Well, given how reluctant they have been to touch pets at all since launch (unless it affected PVP) is why I’m saying they are highly unlikely to add any pets at all.
Why would they change the class mechanics at all? Can’t see it happening. It’s not speculation, there is a druid in the video and he is using a pet. Fact.
Right. And that’s the only fact that can be gained from the video. Nothing else. As Sebrent (who understands what I am saying) points out, that we know nothing beyond this ONE single fact that the Druid was shown with a pet. Anything past that is speculation, such as, how that pet is used by the Druid. For example: I can speculate that the Druid mechanic is changed to a F1-F4 buff based on pet you have out and the pet is instead tied to your weapon attack skills instead of the F1-F4.
Missing a few skins: torch, war horn, spear gun, and great sword… I want the GS the most.
Spirits are an easy fix: make them exactly like warrior banners. Party Buff giving tools with 100% chance and none of this 35% or 70% BS. None of this kill able crap either. Honestly, I don’t see much difference in using FS and not using FS in real world experiences.
And no shout should have a cast time. That’s just silly.
Yeah, in the same video you can see land spears being used too.
Point being it hasn’t been verbally confirmed by Colin or anyone else at Anet what the Druid class profession will be. You are free to speculate from what you saw in the video but no where have I seen it has been stated for 100% certain Druids will have the exact same class profession mechanic as the Ranger or how closely the Druid profession mechanic will be to the Rangers’. Until specifics are released/confirmed (For example: it’s confirmed Druid’s will be getting staff) then it’s just speculation, even if you are interpreting from the HoT release video.

when you’ve run the same content 100 times – you’re probably want to get it done reasonably quickly so you can go do something else later.
That’s where I am at. If it is going to take longer than 45-60 minutes count me out… So, everybody in my party better be running zerk and know the content or I’ll find another party…. I say that but sometimes I like increasing my personal difficulty with Wild Turkey 101 lol
OP, where did you read Druids will be getting a companion? Link please because I missed where they mentioned specifics on what the Druid profession mechanic is specifically going to be.
In terms of what needs help on Rangers shouts need way more help than spirits. I doubt they’ll tackle both at the same time so I would like to see shouts addressed (Hello instant cast like other professions!) before spirits.

Their frog fetish pales in compairison to their Plant People fetish.
Yeah, like I said, depends on one’s own experience that colors what a Ranger should be to them. And to that end I don’t care what the “original” RPG said about their Rangers or not as it has no bearing on what I consider a Ranger or Beastmaster… but to give you an idea I consider the GW1 Ranger a Ranger and I consider the GW2 Ranger a Beastmaster.
It’s more like 98.5% of medium armor are coats and dresses
Questionable:
Why stray from original GW1 Ranger so much? And by stray I mean making pets mandatory instead of optional?
And that’s why she doesn’t work for Anet anymore was the running joke with some in my guild for awhile after she got the boot.
That CDI is 67 pages long, so, good luck. At the time is was rated the class that needed the most help from Devs.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/cdi/Collaborative-Development-Ranger-Profession
We don’t know until numbers are crunched which Specialization or base class is better DPS. We probably won’t know that for a couple of months until after HoT is released.
I’m betting on rifle… How much so? Already made an ascended rifle for it lol
I guess it’s your previous experience what you think of first when you hear Ranger or Beastmaster. To me they are two different archetypes.
Because of what Colin said is what I said its up in the air what the Druid’s profession is actually going to look like. It’s just too vague to make definitive statement to what the Druid profession mechanic is going to look like.
Personally, I’d like the option out of pets. Been saying that for over two years. Love the weapon play style of the ranger, just hate the forced AI shared DPS. The best way out for people like me is Specializations. Yes, some people would be upset if the Ranger lost the pet, or even just had the option (which baffles me why the mere option would upset people), but with a Specialzation it wouldn’t be the Ranger that would be loosing the pet, it’d be the Druid or Marksman or whatever incarnation they dream up. So, those that want it the pet still can and those that don’t want the pet can FINALLY have an option out.
Were you here for the Ranger CDI, Elendur? If not, I suggest you go read through it because it outlines Anet’s reasoning for doing what they have done with the pet and what they, more specifically, refuse to do.
I always laugh at the people that say “Go play thief or warrior if you don’t like pets!” Because they’ve obviously, and painfully I might add, had very little to no experience on either the thief or warrior, Because if they did they wouldn’t be saying such silly things.
(edited by TheFantasticGman.9451)
I would like to see mounts in gw2.
Who is against mounts can always choose to not to use them.
I cant understand people complaining about this post.
Funny, just like I can’t understand people complaining about others want the option not to use Pets on the Ranger. It’d just be an option, you won’t be forced into it.
Yeah, those two specifically. The “animation fix” and the range nerf… which were pretty much done to make the long bow look better as admitted by, I think, John Sharp.
Y’all must be talking about changes needed for PVP… Cause in PVE it really just needs the previous nerfs reversed and it’s good to go.
Well, they should have never called it a Ranger in the first place. It should have been called Beastmaster, cause that is what it is… It’s our base class, so Anet Devs making a Specialization that replaces the mechanic completely (not just changing it) would be the easiest route to go. If they did that with a 2nd expansion pack, I’d preorder four within the first 10 minutes they are available.
*I noticed that when I was on the mortar at Shatterer my keybind for pet active/passive did not work. F1-F4 still work.
Can y’all take a look at that?
