Because junior employees don’t get to say how the game is made. Basic common sense should be enought to understand that.
Really?
You know for a fact that every decision about where a pet is placed is made (or overseen) by a senior employee?
If so, how do you know that?
Do you have inside information?
BTW, FYI, “common sense” doesn’t mean what you seem to think it means.
I’m seriously questioning your common sense.
Are you, really?
Well what a surprise!
That is exactly the kind of thing people like you seem to say to anyone who disagrees with them and presents facts, rather than just their own selfish opinions (like you do).
How about you answer the question honestly and cut the nonsense?
Oh, that’s right, because you can’t.
Did you even take one step into the new maps?
Yes I did, as you would already know, if you had bothered to read my other comments on this subforum.
Play the game and you will understand that HoT is tailored towards players who value engaging mechanics more than a sightseeing tour with every reward being thrown at them. Do you need a qoute from a dev developing Dark Souls to understand that it’s challenging?
No, I do not.
What on earth has that got to do with Ranger pet gating, in GW2 HoT?
Nothing.
…and now, unless you can return to the subject at hand (which I highly doubt) and the facts about this xpac/game, this discussion is over.
Getting pets behind this map event is a little ridiculous. However, I do not agree with making the map event easier. The map is incredibly fun as it is. Instead, either move the pets to other maps or provide more options for obtaining the pets.
I agree.
They shouldn’t change the map event.
(Unless the devs and/or the majority of players, who care, decide they want that, obviously.)
The map event itself is not the issue, here.
It is the gating of the pets behind it (and then kicking people out, after a few mins) that is the issue.
(edited by Tigaseye.2047)
wow.. you guys really crying about everything
this is too hard, this needs to be easier, the new legendary needs to be free for everyone. oh no i have no idea what to do in the gam,e. it has no content.
jees. i love that those 2 pets are super hard to get. and i dont care not to use them since as i have more than enough other pets to chose from and it will feel so awesome if i finally get them. like a real achievment.
the game is not even out for a week! and you allready call something rare that you have by now. wtf is wrong with you guys
This is the generation nowadays. sadly. Too much entitlement.
I think everyone (reasonable) can see that we aren’t the ones racing around this sub-forum yelling at people and talking like a petulant child.
Also, think of who makes up the “older” generation, now.
In the UK, it’s a bunch of 1960s swingers and punk rockers.
Many of whom behave in a more child-like way than their own grandchildren.
…and at the same time, some of them still have the temerity to try to criticise younger people.
Normally, just to try to get their own way.
Selfish hypocrisy, that no one with a brain should ever fall for.
This isn’t the selfless, older generation who fought bravely in the war, anymore.
They got a kind of “free pass” based on what their generation sacrificed for us.
All older people should be shown respect, but in the case of the ones who don’t show any respect for others, that is unlikely to happen for long.
(edited by Tigaseye.2047)
Again, why did they remove map completion from WvW? Because it wasn’t “fair” to you PvE types to make you run around a PvP map. Remember? This situation is sort of similar…except that instead of map completion, this is having all the tools available to your profession in order to play it the way you want.
I know and I publicly supported that decision, as I know there are people who are almost phobic about any PVP and I had empathy for that.
Shame, when the tables are turned and we complain about this, this is what we get.
Isn’t that, so often, the case?
“No good deed goes unpunished.”.
Not that we get it from every PVEer; just a certain type…
So, I’m not going to blame them all, or change my position on anything, but still.
Disappointing, frankly.
(edited by Tigaseye.2047)
In guild wars 1 there was a pet that was only available after you completed the story of one of the expansions. There are other pets in this game that require you to be a high level in hall of monuments.
For Christ’s sake, some things are supposed to be hard. You are supposed to have to put in effort to get them. That’s what makes showing them off worth it. What’s next, are you going to ask for free legendary weapons? This desicion is unaceptable,
i am a wvw player i dont want to waste my time in pve watching ppl failing the event again and again and beeing forced to wait and search for a map where an organized party is killing the boss so i can go and get my pet.
Why are u forcing me to play an event over and over again, just to get my pet, this is not nice to your Rangers, and sorry but i am raging right now.
today from 6 am until 2 pm i was trying to get my tiger and e v, but nope no one no map no organisation could do it.
II want to go and play wvw not camp a pve map for an event i dont like to get acces to my class proffesion skills.
No other klass has to do that kind of thing.
Pooor design and a good reason to give a bad review on metacritics
agree 100% some things are supposed to be hard to get. One of the greatest things I remember when playing WoW as a hunter where the epic hunts for rare pets that had unique abilities and skins.
There isn’t a single pet in this game that we can’t do without, there’s always an easier “version” of the same pet. If you don’t want to put in the time to get the hard to find ones then don’t.
That’s simply not true.
These pets have unique abilities.
Now, I’m sure we could all argue, all day long, about what people can and can’t “do without” in games, but it is totally irrelevant.
Because no other class is being faced with the choice of having to do something like this, or “do without”.
That is the point.
Also, the rare pets in WoW (apart from the SBs) don’t have unique abilities; just unique skins/colours (and sometimes, not even that…).
Plus, all you have to do is wait at their (easily accessible) spawn location.
They did try adding invisible rares, with some sort of footprint hunt, in MoP and virtually nobody bothered.
I’m sure the pets will be moved, just a matter of time. This whole expac exuded the feeling of rushed and dev panic. The pets being where they are was probably the result of a panicked dev dragging and dropping objects into the map with the world builder while the final code was being compiled and boxed at 2 am the day before release.
He’s probably reading this going, God I wish I had more time
I hope you’re right.
(edited by Tigaseye.2047)
And HoT is supposed to be not-so-casual.
Says who?
Also, if you’re calling 3 hours “totally hardcore” you’re making a fool out of yourself.
And please look up the definition of grind. Many people like you are confusing this term a lot nowadays.
As others have said, it’s probably not just 3 hours.
It’s potentially many, many, 3 hour periods end-to-end, plus a frustrating, limited time jumping puzzle (which you have to get right quickly, or be kicked out of), plus the distinct possibility that there are not even any juvenile tigers there, when you have done all that, as you are competing for each one, with other Rangers.
Not that any of that makes much difference.
The point is, they are gating our class mechanics behind content that may well have nothing to do with what we enjoy doing, in-game and they are NOT doing that to any other class.
We can keep arguing, here, but it changes nothing.
Thought we were all dependant on the chains finishing. There is a hp right in the first map that you have to take the pact chopper to the canopy to get. There is one in the south of the city in the 2nd map that you need to wait out the event for/or is locked behind a mastery gate.
To the victors go the spoils. Our pets are no different.
They ARE different.
That is the entire point.
They are part of our class mechanics.
If these were just unique-skinned pets that shared their F2 abilities with existing pets, then you might (and I stress might) have some sort of point.
But, they are not.
The problem is not 1 time for 3 hours, it’s multiple times for 3 hours, only to more than likely fail in the end. Even after you succeed, you have a VERY limited amount of time to find 2 pets before you’re booted back to the beginning.
Exactly.
Thank God I switched mains to Mesmer.
No one is making me do locked-out, timed jumping puzzles, for new mechanics, on that, please note.
Not to mention that it’s just far less stressful, in general.
This is the map where the difficulty should be at its highest, just because you want to make a proud animal a slave doesn’t mean it should be easier to do so.
Go tigers!
Firstly, I doubt you’re even a Ranger, talking like that.
Secondly, most Rangers do not consider their pets to be slaves.
They consider them to be companions.
We Charm them – we don’t beat them into submission.
I think you must be thinking of minions?
Rangers don’t have minions.
(edited by Tigaseye.2047)
I totally do not agree. if you can’t even put in 3 hours, then maybe a MMO is the wrong game for you.
I could already name you one german speaking guild who will run these meta events regularely, as they do with the triple wurm.
I’m pretty sure that there are other guilds out there who do the same. And I really don’t thin that anyone of you doesn’t hve the time to play for 3 hours on weekends or so.
This is supposed to be a casual MMO, though.
If you’re saying all MMOs should be totally hardcore and grindy/challenging and none should be casual, that is your opinion.
But it doesn’t alter the fact that this particular MMO was marketed on the basis of being non-grindy.
Or the fact that no other class is being asked to do anything like this for their class mechanics.
I pretty much agree, TBH.
Not sure that it’s false advertising, as such, but still.
I don’t like the idea of gambling, especially with what might have originally been real money, in games.
Especially, as it could be a kid gambling…
Seems wrong.
(edited by Tigaseye.2047)
I like both outfits and armour skins, for different reasons, but I have a feeling that by condoning outfits, I may be reducing the number of future armour skins available?
Which is, obviously, not good.
We do need as many options as possible, though.
It’s amazing how quickly you get sick of things, when you’re watching your character run.
Far quicker than you would ever get sick of your own, or your partner’s clothes, for example.
(edited by Tigaseye.2047)
I certainly think they could do it with some of the stuff.
For example, a pair of cloth boots look pretty much indiscernible from a pair of leather ones, material-wise, ingame.
If you think of a game like WoW, there are certain skins that span armour weight classes and they look fine.
Also, I don’t see why you couldn’t mix the Profane light armour top with the Sneakthief medium armour legs (or vice versa)?
They might not look that great together, but they wouldn’t clip.
Whereas, the Phoenix Vest and the Profane Pants do clip, despite both being light armour, gemstore purchases…
They should get someone onto it, quite frankly – someone who loves playing dress-up and has a critical eye.
They could soon work out what did and didn’t work.
Whether they ever do this, or not, though, I think we just need more very plain stuff added (i.e. very plain, simple tops and pants), to mix and match with all our more ornate stuff.
If they made them new, they could make sure they worked for each armour class and didn’t clip with anything.
…and just by virtue of them being very plain and simple, with no bulk, or sticky-out bits, or skirts, that would presumably be pretty easy to do.
(edited by Tigaseye.2047)
I totally agree.
Also about the HoM pets (you’re talking about the black widow right?), those are identical game-play wise to other existing pets. The electric wyvern and tiger have f2 skills that are completely unique to them.
Exactly.
This is a completely different situation and it’s like it was designed by someone who is completely clueless about Ranger, frankly.
In WoW, you have the Spirit Beasts, for BM Hunters, which are rare (and have unique abilities), but it’s still only a matter of having patience.
Also, there are lots of them, at this point, so even on the busiest of realms you should be able to find at least one fairly quickly.
Whereas, in this, they have gated two exclusive F2 ability pets behind a huge wall of obstacles.
So, you can’t even “just” be patient – you have to be patient and jump through hoops, quite possibly for days.
Just to get your class mechanics.
(edited by Tigaseye.2047)
I think it’s fine. Gives people something to shoot for. It reminds me of the UW spider. Also, I completed Dragon Stand the other night when I fell into a guild run map and I can see the event being completed on a regular basis soon enough.
It’s a nice special reward for rangers I think.
Saying it gives people something “to shoot for” assumes we all love this kind of content and will enjoy “shooting” for it.
A bit like saying that everyone should shoot to be a top footballer.
Not everyone even wants to be a footballer, let alone a top one.
At the end of the day, pets are Ranger’s class mechanic, so gating them behind these type of hurdles is not OK.
If they wanted to put a special, rare, rainbow tiger behind a limited time, event success related, jumping puzzle nightmare, then that would be different, I guess.
Although, I still wouldn’t recommend it, as people who don’t enjoy that kind of stuff would still be frustrated.
But, this is just a regular tiger and the only one available, so it should be available fairly easily.
Either that, or the pet mechanic should be usable on any other pet, at the very least.
(edited by Tigaseye.2047)
Yeah, it’s an awful design decision.
Same with the tiger.
Make them rare – fine.
But, don’t make it into a frustrating race.
Is this how crappy our class is that we cheer when an unannouced change is reverted?
I know.
I recommend Mesmer.
It’s very therapeutic and therapy is exactly what you need, after playing Ranger in this game.
So both the tiger & electric wyvern are gated behind that 2 hour event chain.
Lovely.
I know.
Back to Mes, again.
I don’t even mind waiting for rare pets, because I’m happy to be patient.
But, a timed jumping puzzle, where you get kicked out after a few mins?
That is just sadistic, frankly.
I’m a happy, chilled out, positive person on Mes.
But, almost as soon as I log onto my Ranger, I turn into a bad tempered, suicidal lunatic.
That is how badly Rangers are (consistently) treated, in this game.
I am not amused.
(edited by Tigaseye.2047)
Went to the area shown for the tiger and still nothing.
Sadly, no and it was the one I really wanted.
a lot of vision went into the druid and I feel ashamed the ranger community doesn’t recognize this. the smokescale f2 nerf was needed, everyone rational knows it.
At least partly, because they’re Rangers, not Druids.
Druids are cool too, but they have nothing at all to do with Rangers.
I don’t want to sound totally ungrateful, but it’s almost like a comedy sketch to give one familiar, well-established class a spec that, essentially, turns it into another, again familiar, well established class (although, admittedly, not in this game).
Just bizarre, really.
Almost like that person doesn’t really understand what Rangers, or Druids, are (or were).
Like they didn’t even read up on their history…
…and no, everyone “rational” does not know that.
When I was complaining, on here, about Ranger being sub-par to pretty much everything else, in WvW and was saying I thought it needed far more sustained, untargeted stealth (because, if any class should have an ability to blend into its surroundings, it’s Ranger), I was told “Don’t worry, you will have that from Smokescale, in HoT.”.
Well, I’m very glad I took that with a HUGE pinch of salt, didn’t “count my chickens” (to mix my metaphors) and went back to my Mesmer; because, otherwise I would be extremely disappointed.
Not that I think it would be enough to save Ranger, anyway.
We need proper stealth in our own utility choices; not just tied to some poor AI pet with, quite possibly, too small a range to make it practical.
Not only that, but the Smokescale is not a “pretty” pet – it will not appeal to everyone.
So, even if they revert it and it (amazingly) works as intended, it will still not be ideal, as people will feel obliged to use it.
But, it would at least be a start.
(edited by Tigaseye.2047)
Forum bug, bug, buggety bug…
I only really wanted the tiger.
It’s just Pokémon, ATM, as I don’t do anything on Ranger that requires decent pets and if I did, I would be severely disappointed, as the one truly useful pet has been nerfed.
But, whatever, I’m not going to kill myself to try to find a pet I won’t even get to use much.
So, now I see that the best looking longbow in the game, with the possible exception of Kudzu (if you’re into super-girly stuff and spending a small fortune) is given to Guardian.
I’m seriously getting annoyed, now.
Even though I’m not maining Ranger anymore, I still can’t help but feel aggrieved.
This is just not OK.
You shouldn’t have to roll a Guardian, to play a decent Ranger class, when there is already supposed to be a Ranger class, in the game.
…and what about all the people who like their pets?
Not to mention that, while the Druid staff is OK looking, it’s not a patch on the Guardian longbow.
This really isn’t good enough, Anet.
Forum bug.
Q: Why can’t a multi-million dollar company afford a new forum, if they can’t fix this one?
For 3 years pets haven’t been able to keep their names… It’s par for the course.
True.
All this is such a shame – it’s a beautiful looking game and with the proper care and attention (and lack of obvious class bias), it could be amazing.
Forum bug.
Q: Why can’t a multi-million dollar company afford a new forum, if they can’t fix this one?
I heal, my Guardian shoots with Bow. We beat the best team in the game.

#RangerRangingRanger heals
Pally uses bow….the kitten is wrong with this game???
Apparently, they’re trying so hard to be original (and not WoW), that they don’t care if the game seems like Bizarro World.
I’m pro the idea of Ranger healing, actually, but it should have been in a Ranger-ish kind of way; with healing arrows, or something.
As for Guardian having a longbow – you’re absolutely right, that just seems utterly bizarre and makes Ranger more-or-less redundant.
So, it should only have happened (IF it happened, at all) after Ranger had been improved and all its issues resolved.
Otherwise, it’s just a further kick in the teeth, frankly.
Nope I love my Druid, yes it is different. But come on guys give them alittle time to get things adjusted. I made my Ranger and leveled him up just for HoT.
Yes, I can tell you’re new around here.
You still have that charming thing…..now, what do they call it, again?
Ah yes, “hope”, that’s it… xD
Welcome to Ranger, where hope comes to die.
Still soldiering with my ranger for now. I don’t really want to play my other characters much. Ranger is what I have fun with, despite our issues.
It IS a fun class and that is, precisely, why Anet are so short-sighted in treating it so woefully.
I get that it may well be because they enjoy playing their own game, on other classes and so, want it to be all their own way…
However, if they are only making this game, at this point, primarily for their own entertainment, then they shouldn’t be a publicly traded company, with shareholders.
As, they are not even trying to maximise other people’s enjoyment (and therefore, their own profit).
(edited by Tigaseye.2047)
I think the only up side to all this, is that all the people who normally play other classes, but have recently rolled a Ranger, for Druid, will now see how Ranger is treated, firsthand.
Because, prior to this, we have been like the poor kid, who is bullied at school, because he/she is neglected at home.
“Home” being Anet, in this analogy.
It will be good for people, who didn’t care about the Ranger neglect, as they didn’t play one, to experience it first hand, on their Druids.
I expect they will just abandon Druid and go back to a more favoured class, but still.
Re. Irenio: sadly, it doesn’t really matter how much he is in our corner, if certain other devs (who have the final say) still want to keep Ranger down.

But… It’s not grindy!
You have to do hero challenge once per character.
Many can be done without fighting. In grindy MMO, unlocking a point would be like “kill 10 000 kittenty weak foes”.
It’s grindy for a casual MMO, though.
I don’t know which godforsaken, hellhole of an MMO would require you to kill 10,000 weak foes, for 1 point; but, thankfully, it isn’t (or wasn’t) anything like this one.
You have to compare like with like.

Everything about this expansion has been done very well. Every difficulty and gate seems tastefully done in good context.
I’m very disappointed with the criticism. I’m sorry, but to be brutally honest, it sounds like a bunch of millennial whining. They’re not getting their trophy after playing a whole weekend…
I’ve mostly played map events and the story. I’ve really enjoyed the story, except for the final which I haven’t completed. I don’t know whether it’s buggy or I’m just not understanding mechanics.
The density of explorable space is fantastic. I’ve never seen anything like it.
In short, I can see myself enjoying this content for a long time. Please, please, please don’t make drastic changes to the gates or difficulty. I can see that you’re already adapting some parts of the game to accommodate short-term, almost arcade style MOBA play. I don’t want instant gratification.
If the short attention span crowd kicks and whines and gets their way with GW2, I’ll need to find a different game. And I want to stick with GW2 for a long time.
Thank you for all you do. Your work is greatly appreciated.
I’m trying not to take sides, here, as I don’t really care about the elite specs, personally.
However, GW2 is supposed to be a casual MMO.
It’s not supposed to be grindy, or feel like a second job.
Also, accusing other people of being “whining”, “millennial” and of having a “short attention span”, just because they don’t happen to think like you, about a game, is very prejudiced and rude.
It serves no real purpose, here, apart from allowing you to vent, at the cost of upsetting everyone else further.
ive been telling you guys for 3 years
Ranger will never be good
It’s much more fun to win with a class that everyone says is bad.
While that may be true, it is totally unfair that some classes are significantly inferior and far harder to do well on than others.
Especially in the case of a class like Ranger, which is a class (with its bow[s] and cute pets) that typically appeals to newer players.
It does not give a good first impression of the game and will likely lead to an unnecessarily poor retention of those newer players.
It’s just really poor judgement, on Anet’s part.
is it only me or Guardian’s Longbow is better than actual Ranger’s? xD
Cause for me it’s really like DH is actually what Ranger should be.
Well, it will be.
They’re a heavy armour class with a longbow and no constantly dying, bad AI, pet.
Whereas, Ranger is only a medium armour class with a constantly dying, bad AI, pet.
They could level the playing field by making Rangers (passively) tougher and/or giving them better, more sustained, non-targeted stealth.
After all, if you think about WoW, Hunters there wear mail armour (i.e. somewhere between leather and plate), which they can choose to make more like plate with a talent, have camouflage (a weaker form of stealth, with 100% uptime) and have a good disengage (which is far more useful, when used defensively, than a knockback).
…and even then, with all that, they are (at best) mid-pack in PVP.
Without better defence, far better stealth and/or a good disengage, Rangers will never be on an even vaguely equal footing with other classes, in this game.
…and yet, what do they do to Rangers?
Nerf, nerf, nerf, paste an ill-fitting Druid spec/class on top, nerf, nerf…
They’re just coming across as totally clueless and/or horribly biased.
(edited by Tigaseye.2047)
Tiger is going to be pretty annoying.
I didn’t even have a problem getting rares in WoW, as it generally just required a little research and patience.
But this whole contested waypoint, time limited thing is just soul sucking.
I don’t like the contested waypoint thing, at the best of times, but gating a pet behind it is going too far.
I don’t want to race for pets.
Traps (not Ranger’s, obviously!) seemed extremely OP in the Beta.
If they still are, they should nerf them, rather than buffing Ranger’s to be equally OP.
Traps alone shouldn’t be able to kill a fully PVP geared (i.e. Soldier’s), level 80 player, in a couple of secs and that is exactly what they were doing.
There was terrible skill lag at the time, so people weren’t able to do a lot of mitigation; but, still, it was ridiculous.
Of course, it could have been an exploit, IDK?
Oh no they’re still OP. I’ve 1 shot many classes with my trap bombs
That aspect is not what I’m talking about however and their damage should be lowered. I just mean our traps need at least a stun breaker on them, and they should grant a little more utility. (boons, control, or bit of both)
Oh, I see.
Well, that’s obviously a fair enough request, then.
Seriously guys, save yourself from further distress/nervous breakdown/heart failure and either switch classes, or switch games.
I say this with love, BTW, as a former Ranger player and someone who mained a Hunter in WoW.
I’m not trying to remove the class, or anything.
It’s just not worth the stress, here.
TBH, I would far rather find out that it’s because the devs hate hunters IRL, because I can relate to that, because I would never kill an animal for fun.
But, while it just looks suspiciously like they want a permanent whipping boy type class and easy kills, while they presumably play their sustained stealthing/heavy armour classes, I struggle to have any respect for them, at all.

Yep.
Anet devs don’t play Rangers, or like Rangers, or want to lose Rangers as everyone’s “free bags” in WvW.
This is the only logical conclusion I can come to for their constant bad treatment of them.
Sorry to sound a little melodramatic, here, but it simply doesn’t make sense, if looked at from any other (less cynical) perspective.
(edited by Tigaseye.2047)
Quit it well before HoT.
I only bang my head against brick walls for so long.
By “quit” I mean stopped doing anything, even vaguely, serious on it.
I still wander around on it, from time to time, in open world.
…and in fact, more so now, as I’m trying to find pets.
Once I’ve found them, that will probably be more or less it, though.
Just tamed a Smokescale.
Kind of disappointed – or, I would have been, if I had actually believed everything I had heard.
I heard it was supposed to provide actual stealth, on demand, which is what I want a lot more of, on Ranger.
Oh well, fortunately I didn’t really hold out much hope for Ranger, anyway.
For some reason, Anet just seem to dislike the class and want to keep it down.
Maybe because the devs play other classes and/or because they mistakenly misread people rolling lots of Rangers, for innocent reasons (because they just love pets and/or the romantic notion of running through a wood with a bow, or whatever), as a sign that it must be OP.
If they want to lose a ton of potential Hunter/Ranger business to Blizzard, for the rest of eternity, I guess that is up to them.
Not that Hunters are even a great class (relatively speaking) in PVP, in WoW.
Just less bad than they are in this game.
(edited by Tigaseye.2047)
Personally, I would prefer a stealthy spec and/or for Ranger to be made more of a stealth class, in general and for the new weapon to be another bow (crossbow?); or even just improvements of the two bows we already have.
(edited by Tigaseye.2047)
Visually, I love it.
The visual aspect of this game almost always makes me smile.
The jungle flowers, the Hylek and their treetop home are great.
So, I would give it a 5/10 overall, just for that alone.
I can’t really add any more points for anything else, yet.
It’s not completely devoid of fun, but some of it is unfortunately in negative territory, so that pretty much cancels out any fun you might have had, previously.
I’m still only on the first map, though.
Hopefully, once I have got used to it and/or moved on to other maps, I will be happier.
less fun than WoD. yeah i said it. and thats saying a lot.
I wouldn’t quite go that far…
For one thing, they added gliding, rather than taking away flying.
Also, they are giving no one anything much, in terms of gear.
As opposed to Blizz, who are only giving “real” raiders anything decent, this time around.
Anet may have wandered off the path slightly, but Blizz have well and truly thrown themselves in front of the truck.
(edited by Tigaseye.2047)
The new maps look fantastic, but yes, I wanted a fun journey, this, this is so far very difficult to like.
The whole “train” to use mushrooms and updrafts etc, hard to believe the team accepted the concept at the design table.
This XPAC looks like a photocopy of NCSoft’s AION. I suspected the game would be grindy because of the whole mastery concept being bulldozed in. Grinding is ok to some extent as the player is working towards a goal. But, this game design has a fundamental flaw. It does not take into consideration that most of these maps will become empty as majority of the players will drift towards “easier” grindy content within a few weeks. Good luck finding people to do challenging content that will hold up a significant portion of the map.
The secondary flaws are in the assumption that majority of the people who play this game like jumping puzzles. Combining them in regular gameplay is plain blunder. Out of 5 people in a group, 1 will surely fail at it. For example, COE Laser corridor — and that was a simple one.
Reworking the content will be impossible right now. So, advice to the wise, try to get things done now when maps are full.
Worst thing is, it’s not even about being good, or bad, at jumping.
Some of us have a lot of lag to deal with.
So, you can’t even rely on people “getting good”.
Even if they improve slightly, they will still “fail” when the lag really kicks in.
Much as I used to really enjoy (offline) platform games, I just don’t think online games and hardcore platforming really work together.
(seriously, a mastery to jump on a mushroom, what the hell were they smoking lol).
Or maybe eating…?

Yeah, “toughen up” peeps, play that game you paid for and whatever you do, never, ever complain.
There’s good sheeple…
I’m just glad I don’t really care about “elite” specs, otherwise I really wouldn’t be a happy bunny, either.
Even as it is, it feels kind of grindy and annoying just trying to traverse the first map!
I just wanted to tame some pets and explore…
Not feel permanently lost, hit lots of dead ends and fall into ravines.
There again, even though I play quite a lot, I don’t play games as substitute jobs.
Sometimes I wonder whether we should just leave the guys, who do, to it?
Maybe we were never meant to play MMOs?
It’s highly possible, in my case, as I have never classed myself as that kind of person.
Someone I met in-game, in WoW, said something about me being a nerd and I said “I’m not a nerd.”.
…and I’m not.
I like fun.
WoW did a free promotion, 4 years ago, BF told me about it (he’s more of a nerd than I am, TBH), I gave it ago, it was quite fun, so I stayed for while.
But, it always kind of felt like a misquote of that line from Withnail and I:
“I’m playing an MMO by mistake…”.
So, perhaps the OP is right, in a way and we should either “toughen up”, or stop banging our heads against endless brick walls and just go and do something else, instead?

+1 Why didnt the advertise this nonsense before is what i ask, during the beta events and whatnot so people woould not feel this disapointing about wasting money. I am pretty sure they will nerf this nonsense at some point alongside with offrening cheaper vesion of the game, so we could just have waited for that to happen.
Because then far fewer people would have bought it? ;D
Most companies don’t advertise the less popular side of their products.
The few that do get less business, sadly.
There probably should be full disclosure laws put in place, so they all have to.
Then people could make informed decisions.
I think Anet u guys should increase The amount of players in eternal battleground.
I understand how you feel, but that wouldn’t work – it’s a lagfest, as it is.
I know you suggested they could fix the lag issues first, but they never seem to.
They just seem to up the numbers, when someone like you asks them to and then (hopefully) lower them again, when someone like me complains that the game is unplayable that way.
It’s a neverending cycle that needs to end, ASAP, frankly.
If anything, they need to lower the numbers and provide more maps (if they can’t/won’t do something to significantly reduce the lag, any other way).
Are these specializations really elite?? For example, are all the ele players clamoring to be Tempests? I mean they are elite…. right?? Calling these specializations elites is just semantics to justify all the running through hoops to get them.
Let’s hope they’re not, otherwise all semblance of balance will fly out of the window.
What does MMO mean?
Massively Multiplayer Online game.
The “Massively Multiplayer” simply refers to the sheer number of people able to play the game, simultaneously.
It doesn’t suggest how they should play it.
As opposed to a single-player (or a small group) game only being capable of allowing one player (or a small group of players) to play the same game, at the same time.
It isn’t intended to imply that all, or even some, of those players have to play together, on the same side, as a group.
…and in fact, in older multiplayer games, the two, or four, people who played them together were very often playing against (not with) each other.
Of course, people can play MMOs together, on the same team and that can be great.
However, it shouldn’t be obligatory, just to experience the content and that was never what the term was invented to imply.
If it has become that way, in some games, that is mostly due to logistics and/or player requests.
It is not due to the developers trying to adhere to some made-up definition of “MMO”.

Yes!
I don’t want enormous great bat wings, TYVM and we have only just bought the butterfly wings, so it would be more than fair.
Way to Small
Butterfly wings need to be larger and dye-able before I’d ever think of making them glider wings,
Yes, heaven forfend that things aren’t realistic.
Like you could really glide on a pair of oversized bat wings…
…and after all, there is no other magic in this game; so, yeah, clearly ridiculous.
(edited by Tigaseye.2047)
This whole thread is ridiculous just buy the expansion, clearly you enjoy the game so support it and gain access to a bunch of new content at the same time it’s a win win, don’t complain that your not getting for free what a majority of us paid for
No one should have to do that, just to have access to what they already had.
As I say, I personally bought HoT, but that doesn’t mean I think it’s OK to take stuff away from those who didn’t (or didn’t yet).
Just add stuff in xpacs, please, games companies – don’t try to take stuff away, or make purchases compulsory.
That never ends well…
Streamlining is sometimes necessary, of course; but just taking stuff away for arbitrary reasons? No.
Just ask Blizzard…
